If you’re like me, you’ve probably returned to the gym by now—or not, and that’s fine, too.

For me, it was an ACL surgery a year ago that pushed me back to the gym to build up leg strength after physical therapy ended. And it was just the nudge I needed because it’s hard to get back in those workout routines after so much time away.

Sometimes a traditional fitness center can feel boring, slogging away on the treadmill or elliptical machine. Luckily, in the Newport Beach area, there are plenty of exercise options that put the fun back into fitness. From rock climbing gyms to boxing and Zumba classes or barre and yoga studios, there’s something for everyone. In our article, “Fitness Fun” (page 60), read about all the possibilities that feel more like playtime than working out.

In our Health & Wellness special section, we also feature local libations with less sugar or that are filled with fresh fruits and veggies for added nutritional value. Learn more about these better-foryou beverages in our story on page 52. And, when the holidays get hectic, you might be looking for a moment to relax and recharge. Look no further than the spa treatments we’ve rounded up (page 64), from seasonal body scrubs to a sound healing facial, sea shell massage and time in an infrared sauna. After one of these serenity sessions, you’ll be ready to finish your holiday shopping. Speaking of which, turn to page 44 for a list of gift ideas for everyone on your list so you’ll be done with plenty of time to book another spa appointment.

WHY CELEBRITY CRUISES IS THE NATURAL CHOICE IN THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Celebrity Cruises® invites you to discover a corner of the world so awe-inspiring, it’s like you’ve left the planet completely. An archipelago time forgot—the breathtaking Galapagos Islands.

These islands rose from the ocean floor through volcanic activity and have never been connected to the mainland. As a result, many of the creatures you’ll meet here can’t be found anywhere else, like marine iguanas, Galapagos giant tortoises, and blue-footed boobies. These colorful locals have no fear of humans, so you’ll be surprised how up close and personal you can get.

Few places in the world remain this pristine, and Celebrity doesn’t want you to miss a thing. So they have a team of certified naturalists to guide you on your journey and give you authentic guided experiences. Every day, you’ll have your choice of excursions, and of course, they’re all included.

A visit to the Galapagos Islands is nothing short of life-changing, so it deserves the choice of three equally extraordinary ships. Celebrity Flora® is the first luxury yacht designed specifically for the Galapagos, with an outward-facing design that creates a closer connection with the natural wonders around you, along with stunning, all-suites accommodations. Celebrity Xpedition® is the ship that set the standard for all-inclusive Galapagos vacations. For the most intimate way to explore the Galapagos, the 16-guest Celebrity Xploration® will make you feel like you have the islands all to yourselves. Whichever ship you choose, everything you’ll need is included—shore excursions, drinks, locally sourced cuisine from menus crafted by a Michelin-starred chef, and more.

Celebrity is also committed to preserving the Galapagos Islands for future generations. Its fleet marks an evolutionary leap in sustainability, with state-of-the-art advancements, and Celebrity’s guests have planted more than 50,000 scalesia trees in partnership with Galapagos National Park. These are just a couple ways Celebrity makes its mark by leaving less of a footprint.

To discover why a Galapagos vacation with Celebrity Cruises is a must for every world traveler, call 1-888-283-6879, contact your travel advisor, or visit celebrity.com.

GETZLAF GOLF SHOOTOUT

More than $800,000 was raised during the 10th annual Getzlaf Golf Shootout on Sept. 11 at Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point for CureDuchenne, a nonprofit that helps fund research to find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy and improve the lives of boys and young men living with the condition. The charity golf tournament is hosted by Ryan Getzlaf, captain of the Anaheim Ducks hockey team, along with his wife, Paige, who have long been champions of the Newport Beach-based nonprofit. The tournament brings together athletes, celebrities and community leaders for a golf competition, awards reception and dinner, all in support of bringing an end to Duchenne, which affects approximately one in 3,500 males born worldwide. Boys are typically diagnosed around age 5 and lose the ability to walk by their mid-teens; most don’t survive past their mid-20s. There are nearly 15,000 boys living with Duchenne in the U.S. and more than 300,000 around the world. (cureduchenne.org) —Sharon Stello

LAURA’S HOUSE GALA

More than $700,000 was raised for services to aid domestic violence victims, such as sheltering, counseling and legal help, as well as prevention and community outreach efforts, at the annual Laura’s House Gala on Oct. 2 at Newport Beach Country Club. Funds also went toward the capital campaign for a new Laura’s House Domestic Violence Resource Center, which would be OC’s first collaborative, multiservice center focused on holistic domestic violencerelated services. Over 300 supporters attended the event with the theme “Never Rock Alone.” During the evening, a Laura’s House graduate shared her moving story about how the organization helped her break the cycle of domestic violence, and the Crystal Heart Award was presented to Marla Merhab Robinson of Merhab Robinson & Clarkson law firm for her longtime pro bono legal counsel. Also during the event, swing dancers and the Sensation Show Band performed. Silent and live auctions raised funds for the nonprofit with items such as a private box for a concert at Honda Center, a trip to Maui and a SWAT training experience with OC Sheriff Don Barnes. Over the past 27 years, Laura’s House has provided shelter and services to approximately 6,200 abused men, women and children plus nonresidential services including 24-hour crisis intervention, legal assistance, counseling and life skills education to nearly 68,000 people. FESTIVAL OF OC CHEFS

Twenty-five chefs from local restaurants participated in the Festival of OC Chefs on Oct. 3 at Newport Beach Country Club, raising more than $640,000 in net proceeds for the nonprofit KidWorks, which provides leadership development and academic enrichment for students from prekindergarten through college as well as parent support in the at-risk neighborhoods of Santa Ana. During the outdoor event, 425 guests mingled and sampled the food and wine before a seated dessert sampling and presentation. KidWorks’ board member and event co-chair Cory Alder spoke about the nonprofit’s work, noting that all of the program’s high school graduates go on to attend a college or university. The event’s presenting sponsors, the Kay Family Foundation and the David A. Pyle Family, were honored for their ongoing support. Among the Newport restaurants and resorts represented at the event were The Mayor’s Table Pacific Pub & Kitchen, CdM Restaurant, Cannery Seafood of the Pacific, A Restaurant, Balboa Bay Resort, The Resort at Pelican Hill, Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa and Newport Beach Country Club; event chef chair was Pascal Olhats. In addition to local cuisine, the evening included a Heads or Tails game that left one guest standing: Newport resident John Cornuke, guest of Todd and Natalie Pickup, received $500, which he donated back to KidWorks. Another Newport resident, Bob Parsons, won a 50-bottle premium wine tree raffle. Those in attendance were also treated to live music by the Flashback Heart Attack band. (kidworksoc.org) —S.S.

POSTPARTUM HEALING HELP

Motivated by her own struggles to heal after giving birth, Newport Beach mom Nancy Anderson—who is also a certified personal trainer and nutrition specialist—has developed a new app, Birth Recovery Center, to aid women in postpartum recovery. Available on Apple’s App Store and Google Play, this virtual platform and community offers one-on-one support from certified postpartum experts to assist with post-pregnancy abdominal rehabilitation for moms and sleep training for babies up to 36 months, as well as access to lactation consultants and mental health experts. Anderson previously created the Move Your Bump app and a website, nancyandersonfit.com, helping thousands of women around the world to navigate their pregnancies and reach goals in a quick yet safe manner. Anderson was driven to create these tools after delivering her two boys and feeling frustrated by the lack of affordable and up-to-date options for helping her own body to heal. As she discovered, millions of new moms suffer from post-pregnancy issues ranging from ab separation and incontinence to the socalled “mommy pooch.” Anderson decided to step away from her corporate fitness career to improve the standard of care for these women from preconception to postpartum healing. REINVESTING IN HOPE

Thanks to $9 million in donations from various supporters, a significant renovation and expansion of the Patty & George Hoag Cancer Center is underway in Newport Beach. The state-of-the-art center, to be completed next summer, will include additional exam rooms, infusion center chairs and medical oncology offices, but, most importantly, a primary focus on the patient experience. These upgrades build on Hoag’s already nationally recognized programs. U.S. News & World Report ranks Hoag among the top 10% of cancer centers in the nation. Hoag is also conducting more than 100 clinical trials in cancer, including some focused on pancreatic cancer—one of the deadliest forms of the disease. Notably, Hoag has made many developments in pancreatic cancer treatment including the Anita Erickson Pancreatic Cancer Early Detection Program—one of the few early detection programs in the nation—and Natural Killer Cell Therapy, an immunotherapy drug being used in a clinical trial; Hoag is the only OC hospital and one of only three sites in the country to offer this therapy. DANCE PARTNERS

Segerstrom Center for the Arts has announced a three-year partnership with the American Ballet Theatre, making it the center’s official dance company. The partnership begins this December with the co-presentation of Alexei Ratmansky’s “The Nutcracker.” Other world and West Coast premieres and engagements will also be presented each spring through 2024. New York-based American Ballet Theatre—which includes local favorite Misty Copeland, a principal dancer who grew up nearby in San Pedro—has taken to the stage at Segerstrom Center since 1987 in the world premiere of Mikhail Baryshnikov’s “Swan Lake” in 1988 and the West Coast premiere of Artistic Director Kevin McKenzie’s production of “The Sleeping Beauty” in 2007. Coming up in March 2022, ABT and the center will present a world premiere by Alonzo King and West Coast premieres of Ratmansky’s “Bernstein in a Bubble” and Jessica Lang’s “ZigZag,” showcasing songs recorded by Tony Bennett. The following year, in March 2023, ABT will perform in the North American premiere of “Like Water for Chocolate”—a co-production with The Royal Ballet—inspired by Laura Esquivel’s bestselling novel of the same name. A third world premiere to debut in 2024 is to be announced. Segerstrom Center is also home to the ABT William J. Gillespie School, which offers training, visiting artist lectures, Master Classes and performance opportunities including ABT’s production of “The Nutcracker.” (714-556-2787; scfta.org) —S.S.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Victoria Collins, who founded WISE, which is the local philanthropic group that was honored this year

Two locals are involved in National Philanthropy Day, which honors those who give back to the community. Newport Beach resident Doug Freeman—now the founding executive chair and CEO of OC Music & Dance, a nonprofit performing arts school—is behind the establishment of National Philanthropy Day, campaigning over five years in the early 1980s for this official day of recognition. After making 40 trips to Washington, D.C., and writing 4,000 letters, Freeman was able to convince then-President Ronald Reagan to proclaim Nov. 15 as National Philanthropy Day. Now, more than 130 communities across the U.S., Canada and Mexico celebrate the occasion by presenting awards to individuals, families and businesses who embody the spirit of giving in their regions, according to the Association of Fundraising Professionals. In Orange County, this event is Nov. 17 at the City National Grove of Anaheim. This year, Women Investing in Security and Education is the local philanthropic group being honored. Founded in 1997 by Newport Beach resident Victoria Collins, what was then called Invest in Yourself is now WISE, which aims to facilitate the financial education of all girls and women so they can develop skills to improve their financial status, secure their personal financial freedom and network with other women who have similar needs and goals. Now, Collins is working as a pro bono coach for clients of Executive Coaches of Orange County, helping nonprofit leaders make a bigger impact, but WISE continues to make a difference for girls and women in the community. PIZZA FOR A CAUSE

Research and awareness are pivotal to the fight to end cancer, but they wouldn’t be possible without the fundraising efforts of various organizations. Each September, in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Newport Beach-based Sgt. Pepperoni’s Pizza Store and Julian’s Lego Corner, a project led by the Cherese Mari Laulhere Child Life Department at CHOC, partner up to raise money to donate Lego kits for children who are hospitalized with serious conditions. Now in its sixth year, the collaborative effort gathered donations and also gave proceeds from The Parma Pie, September’s pizza of the month. The project has a special place in the heart of Sgt. Pepperoni’s co-owners Erica and Jeff Roberts, whose daughter, Lauren, went to school with Julian Dunn, the patient for which the charity is named. When Dunn was diagnosed with brain cancer, Lauren sold lemonade and cookies to help his family. He passed away in 2013, but Lauren, who is now in high school, continues to show her support for her friend with Sweet Things For A Sweet Cause; this additional charity she started sells baked goods year-round at Sgt. Pepperoni’s with all proceeds benefiting CHOC. (Sgt. Pepperoni’s Pizza Store: 949-852-9500; sgtpepps.com) (Julian’s Lego Corner: 714-410-5947; choc.org) —Ashley Ryan

ARTISTIC ACCOLADE

Carolyn Johnson, an artist who lives in Laguna Niguel and crafts stunning paintings atop recycled surfboards, was honored Sept. 26 during the return of the Balboa Island Artwalk. Johnson, who shows her work at nearby Laguna Beach’s Artist Eye Gallery, was awarded the Mayor’s Choice Award for Best in Show from Newport Beach Mayor Brad Avery for her line of contemporary, upcycled surfboards. The eco-friendly surfboards are all one-of-a-kind mixed media pieces crafted using blue hues to resemble waves and neutrals for the sand. She also incorporates metallics, resin, ink blends and more for a special touch. Johnson is also passionate about the environment, using her work to raise awareness for climate change, ocean health, biodiversity and sustainability. MAKE A WISH

At every party, one of the best moments is gathering around the birthday boy or girl and singing them into a new year while they make a wish and blow out the candles. But, with COVID-19 still very much at the forefront of our minds, new traditions must be formed—ones that don’t include spreading germs all over the cake. With that in mind, a group of Newport Beach fathers launched the Wishsaver over the summer. The clear, ring-shaped piece of plastic has 21 holes in which to place cylindrical candles with two additional slots for the chunky number candles. Designed to fit over the top of storebought cake domes and boxes (which act as a shield while the candles are blown out), the Wishsaver is made of recyclable materials and is clear in color to allow the aesthetic of the cake itself to come through. Now, it’s easier than ever to make wishes and keep traditions intact without worrying about spreading sickness. (wish-saver.com) —A.R.

BELOVED BRUNCH

AS MORNING MEALS CONTINUE TO SURGE IN POPULARITY, NEWPORT BEACH RESTAURANTS ANSWER WITH UNIQUELY DELICIOUS DISHES.

It’s been years since the craze hit and it’s not showing any signs of slowing down—but why would it?

There’s something both thrilling and relaxing about a laid-back, boozy brunch on weekend mornings, gathered around a table laughing with family and friends. While it seems no city is left untouched, the brunch scene in Newport Beach is especially exciting, with a vast number of restaurants launching morning menus to whet locals’ appetites. The trick is trying to decide between the over-the-top experiments, health-conscious dishes and traditional classics. Here, we cover a little bit of everything and offer up some options for brunching by the coast.

LIGHTHOUSE CAFÉ

Eggs Benedict is definitely a classic that is constantly given new life with interesting ingredients, sauces and more. At Lighthouse Café, located right by the water of Newport Harbor, a classic Benedict is offered with Canadian bacon on an English muffin, but an elevated Lighthouse Benedict is also available. Like the traditional iteration, the eponymous variety is smothered in hollandaise sauce, but the grilled muffin is layered with a bed of fresh arugula, topped with prosciutto and a poached egg, then finished with the sauce and a balsamic glaze. “This Benedict stands apart from most as a result of the prosciutto and the combination of other flavors—the creaminess of the hollandaise and the sweetness of the balsamic,” says Tad Belshe, managing partner of the restaurant. The Lighthouse Benedict has been a favorite since it was added to the menu in 2019; Belshe shares that there is a secret, off-menu salmon variety available as well for those who prefer a seafood option. (949-933-1001; lighthousenb.com)

GREAT MAPLE

A combination of sweet and savory, the fried chicken and doughnuts are sure to impress. “When chicken and waffles … became a red-hot trend, we had already hit the ground running with our maple bacon doughnuts,” says Scott Floyd, Great Maple’s corporate chef. “So we elevated this with our own modern take. … To us, this was the epitome of American comfort food with whimsy and a twist, which is our philosophy.” The doughnuts serve as the base of the dish, crafted with the eatery’s signature maple bacon glaze and sprinkled with pieces of thick-cut, pecan wood-smoked bacon. They are then topped with chicken thighs that have been seasoned in a buttermilk bath for 72 hours, then dredged, fried when ordered and finished with fresh chives—and voila—the dish is complete and ready to be savored. BOSSCAT KITCHEN & LIBATIONS

Sometimes, you’ve just got to go for that over-the-top, sweet treat, and Bosscat Kitchen & Libations has just the thing. Enter the apple cheesecake waffle, which is studded with pearl sugar and topped with a caramel apple cheesecake mixture and whipped cream. “We were working on an apple pancake dish and we didn’t feel it was moving in the right direction,” notes Peter Petro, executive chef and partner at Bosscat. “After about 20 versions of the pancake, we landed on a waffle. Anyone can make an apple waffle, but we decided to go with a cheesecake element to really make it pop.” Finished off with graham cracker crumble, the cheesecake flavor shines through for a sweet and creamy dish that will have you feeling like you’re eating dessert for breakfast. TUPELO JUNCTION CAFE

Those looking to keep it healthy while still enjoying some pizazz should head to this Southern-style restaurant on the peninsula. The wild mushroom, asparagus and black truffle cheese scramble, served with a baby green salad, is the perfect blend of nutritious and luxurious. “I love this scramble,” says Amy Scott, the restaurant’s owner. “We use the best white truffle cheese with black truffles marbled through it—very expensive and high quality.” This unique cheese is scrambled with eggs, shiitake mushrooms and asparagus tips, then plated with a green salad with sliced cherry tomatoes and a house-made red wine vinaigrette. To top it all off, diners may choose from a buttermilk biscuit with jumbleberry jam, fresh cornbread with honey, or whole-wheat sourdough toast. Other unique brunch dishes at Tupelo Junction Cafe include huevos rancheros with pulled pork and chili-style black beans, cheddar-jalapeno grits with shrimp and lobster gumbo sauce and an eggs Benedict with honey-baked ham. BALBOA BAY RESORT

For a breakfast buffet to remember, visit Balboa Bay Resort, which recently launched its Sunday Seafood Brunch. Presented in the hotel’s new Lighthouse room, guests can pair views of the harbor with the finest seafood. Although there is a carving station for rosemary and garlic strip loin, a bakery display, eggs cooked to order and much more, the seafood display is sure to be the highlight of this meal. “It is low in calories, it pairs nicely with Champagne and wine, and it elevates the overall quality of the meal,” says Prabeen Prathapan, executive chef at Balboa Bay Resort. Enjoy fresh-shucked oysters served with a mignonette sauce and lemon wedges, as well as both snow crab claws and king crab legs, poached prawns accompanied by a house-made cocktail sauce, Mexican-style ceviche with marinated fish, and a selection of sushi rolls and sashimi with wasabi, ginger and soy sauce. POWERED UP

NUZUNA WELLNESS CENTERS ENHANCE THE IMPACT OF WORKING OUT WITH ELECTRO-MUSCLE STIMULATION SUITS.

NEWPORT BEACH MAGAZINE: CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE SERVICES YOU OFFER?

CHARLIE LAVERTY: Nuzuna is an electromuscle stimulation company and our services are concentrated on our revolutionary electro-muscle stimulation exercise bodysuit and pants, which can enhance exercise at home or in a Nuzuna health and wellness center. Our system can be used to enhance the fitness impact of virtually any type of exercise method or regimen. Nuzuna is unique as it is completely wireless and [people] may use [it in] both indoor and outdoor [settings]. No equipment is required except for yourself.

NBM: HOW DOES EMS WORK AND WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

CL: Our EMS technology … mimics the body’s nervous system and activates muscle tissue through low- and mid-frequency currents to significantly increase the body’s natural muscle contractions. These contractions act as resistance, making each exercise movement three times more intense. The Nuzuna system can be used in any athletic endeavor and, most importantly, facilitates muscle memory. Two

By incorporating electro-muscle stimulation technology in a bodysuit, Nuzuna Wellness Centers offer the opportunity to increase the impact of exercising. The suit uses low- and mid-level electric currents to make the muscles contract more than they would during a regular workout to boost the results from your fitness routine.

The company opened its Newport Beach location— which offers a Bootcamp, Ab Blast, Booty Blast, Total Body Workout and TRX suspension training classes plus an infrared sauna—in May 2020 and has been expanding ever since; a total of 12 centers are set to be open by the end of this year. While there are plans to eventually sell the suit for in-home use, it’s currently only available to try at Nuzuna Wellness Centers. Here, CEO Charlie Laverty discusses the benefits of embracing this technology and how the equipment works.

20-minute sessions per week is equivalent to four to six hours of traditional exercise.

The Nuzuna system works as you work. Every 12-350 milliseconds, the Nuzuna system measures muscle density, hydration, circulation, temperature and kinesthetic motion. The Nuzuna control box processes the adjustments for the type of impulse, appropriate waveforms [and] range of frequencies for each muscle group and transmits back to the electrodes, which deliver … the individual stimulation. As the client movement occurs, the cycle restarts. Nuzuna eliminates the limitations of training and is designed to be incorporated into any kind of training for any age regardless of type of body or physique.

NBM: IS EMS SOMETHING THAT CAN BE USED BY ANYONE?

CL: EMS can be used by anyone over the age of 14 years old. Certain health conditions may restrict an individual from training with EMS.

NBM: WHAT SHOULD A FIRST-TIMER KNOW ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE?

CL: [It’s] very important to consume a balanced meal and be hydrated prior to the

session. During the session, the client can expect to experience all muscle parts being engaged during each exercise movement. After the session, the client may feel more energized, alert and sleep quality may improve. Whether the client is a beginner or an advanced fitness enthusiast, the trainer will work closely with each individual to adjust the EMS intensity to each client.

NBM: CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE IRON NECK TRAINING OFFERED AT THE NEWPORT BEACH LOCATION?

CL: Iron neck is an excellent training device that can be used with or without EMS. Iron neck training can prevent and aid individuals from neck injuries pertaining to sports, car accidents or daily bad posture habits.

NBM: YOUR COSTA MESA CENTER OFFERS YOGA CLASSES WITH EMS. IN WHAT WAYS DOES EMS ENHANCE A YOGA WORKOUT?

CL: EMS can enhance a yoga workout by improving the client’s balance, coordination and flexibility in each pose. Long-term EMS users will notice back and joint pain has reduced and their posture has improved.

NOTHING NEUTRAL ABOUT IT

YEAR’S FALL/WINTER FASHION FEATURES BOLD COLORS, BRINGING HOPE FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE.

Embrace the winter blues with this cozy TERRI CASHMERE WRAP that is onesize-fits-most and can be worn multiple ways, making it a versatile and vibrant addition to any wardrobe, $228, at Lilly Pulitzer, Fashion Island. (949-717-7815; lillypulitzer.com)

After the pandemic kept us all inside for months at a time, the world slowly reopening has provided many new opportunities. This is especially true for fashionistas who can finally treat the streets like their personal runways once again.

Though comfort was certainly key while staying at home, we’re now exchanging cozy sweat sets and fuzzy slippers for spectacular statement pieces. Clothing construction aside, the focal point of these outfits are the colors they feature, with bright and bold hues taking center stage.

“Quarantine in 2020 meant that we were all safe at home, which meant a year of safe clothes,” says Anita Chugarnkar, a Newport Beach-based fashion stylist at Elyse Walker in Lido Marina Village. “Fashion is always evolving and after a year of cozy loungewear in very neutral tones, it feels natural to dress with more intention to reflect a brighter future with pops of color and patterns.”

These bright hues have been prominent throughout the year, but Chugarnkar has seen certain shades that work well for the fall and winter seasons—namely jewel tones. “Think of all the summer colors we’ve been wearing, but with a darker twist,” she says, noting that these rich hues pair well with the neutral brown and white colors traditionally worn during the colder months. If donning these bold hues is a bit out of your comfort zone, a more subtle approach is to focus on standout accessories. “The easiest way to liven up and elevate any outfit is to incorporate a ‘this-season handbag’ in a bright color,” Chugarnkar says. For this year’s fall-winter collections, some popular options include tote bags, chain or crystalline detailings and furry textures.

Chugarnkar suggests playing with the latter, as textures add a tactile dimension to any outfit. “Definitely invest in a shearling, leather and/or faux fur piece,” Chugarnkar says, pointing to wardrobe staples like coats, bags and shoes.

Even those who value ethical fashion can play into this aforementioned trend by shopping secondhand at high-end consignment stores, such as On Que Style in Corona del Mar. This boutique carries brands that have featured pieces at the intersection of texture and bright colors, including the likes of Tom Ford, Bottega Veneta, Hermes and more.

As for any fashion don’ts around this trend, the stylist says she is “not a fan of fashion rules,” so the key is to stay true to yourself. Individuality is what will ultimately make you shine.

SERENE SANCTUARY

DISCOVER HOW TO CREATE THE BEDROOM RETREAT YOU DESERVE.

Your bedroom is somewhere you should be able to rest, recenter and recharge—a calm place that allows you to let go of the stress of the day and get a good night’s rest. In essence, it should be your sanctuary.

Ashley Clark, owner and principal designer at Skout, says a bedroom should feel calm and inviting. She says it should be designed as a retreat, a place to rest and recover from the chaos of the day; a place that feels like a hug.

“I love adding personal photos and items to a bedroom,” Clark notes. “It’s a place to rest and reflect, to … think about the things and … [people] you love. If you want to hang family photos, wedding photos, your kids’ baby pictures, a bedroom is a great place for that. Not everyone visits your bedroom, so it should truly be a space that is for you with the things that you love.”

When designing your perfect bedroom space, Clark suggests starting with a piece you are drawn to and building around that. This could be a light fixture, bed frame, rug, comfy chair or piece of art— one item to pull through the rest of the room. “Things will fall into place when you start with something you love,” she says.

Clark recommends focusing on lighting, which can include window treatments and filtered lights in the space. She also says bedding and the layering of comforters, throws and pillows are important to set the tone of the room.

“[Consider] adding some lamps to your bedside, a chandelier over the bed or some wall sconces,” Clark suggests. “Lighting has a huge effect on how you feel in your space and it’s so important in your bedroom.

“Scale is really everything,” she adds. “I love when things seem a bit off or just unexpected—when you expect a small light fixture, but instead see a giant one or vice versa.”

Another element that Clark considers pivotal when designing a bedroom space is texture. “We love to keep things pretty neutral in a bedroom, but layer in lots of texture in bedding and pillows, and even wall treatments and furnishings.”

Overall, less is more in the bedroom. Neutral colors and textures should be employed over patterns and colors. While a television can be common in the bedroom, it should not overpower the rest of the space. A bedroom sanctuary is “all about the feels” and clutter should also be kept to a minimum.

“I honestly do not think people realize how much clutter affects them—a pile or box in the corner really makes the entire space feel different. A room free of clutter, a room where things have a place, will change your life,” Clark explains.

“You do not need a huge bedroom, but a space free of clutter is a game changer. No one needs 50 throw pillows on their bed; don’t get me wrong, we love pillows, but try not to get carried away.”

VINTAGE VEHICLES

SEGERSTROM SHELBY EVENT CENTER PREPARES TO OPEN THIS WINTER WITH THE FOURTHLARGEST COLLECTION OF SHELBY CARS IN THE NATION AND A PHILANTHROPIC MISSION.

Anyone who has seen the hit movie “Ford v Ferrari” is familiar with automaker and race car driver Carroll Shelby, portrayed by Matt Damon in the film. Now, an Irvine museum is getting ready to open with a display of more than 80 of Shelby’s vintage vehicles.

A January grand opening is planned for the Segerstrom Shelby Event Center, founded by Newport Beach philanthropists Ted and Rae Segerstrom. Several years in the making, the center will house the nation’s fourth-largest collection of Shelby cars and other items from the Segerstroms’ private collection. The space, which encompasses more than 41,000 square feet, will serve as both a museum and event venue for weddings, corporate parties, fundraisers and more. Notably, the center was designed by world-renowned architect Ulf Henriksson, whose firm, The Scenic Route, handled interior design of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.

Net proceeds from the center will go to the Carroll Shelby Foundation, which provides medical assistance for those in need as well as automotive and other training programs for young people, and to Shriners for Children Medical Center in Pasadena, which offers medical, surgical and rehabilitative care for children with burn scars, cleft lip and palate, and orthopedic conditions, regardless of the families’ ability to pay.

“The event center/museum has been a labor of love for both of us,” the Segerstroms said in a press release. “It has been a dream of ours since 2009 to create a place of celebration, education and preservation of Shelbys, and we are extremely excited to open the doors to the public and share the love and passion we have

for Carroll Shelby, his cars, antique neon signs and gas pumps.

“We first met Carroll in January 2004. We were fortunate to see Carroll at various events throughout the years and get to know this iconic man. We are thrilled to share our collection with his fans, performance car enthusiasts and younger generations who are yet to learn how Carroll shaped the history of the performance cars and automotive industries.”

The museum’s curated galleries will showcase an impressive display of Shelby cars including rare specimens—some that are believed to be the only one of their kind in existence. In fact, this will be one of the world’s largest exhibitions of rare Shelby models.

Among those on display will be the three Shelby Cobras with the lowest production serial numbers in history, including the No. 1002 Cobra purchased by the Segerstroms in 2004 and signed by Shelby himself on the nose and driver side door. “From then on, almost every time he saw us, he jokingly mentioned that he hurt his back getting down to sign the door,” the Segerstroms said in the press release.

The museum will also display the 1999 Shelby Series 1 CSX5000—the first one produced in the 5000 series. Only 249 were made of the original run of Series 1s. These came about when Shelby decided he wanted to design and produce a car from scratch after basing his past cars upon the beginnings of other carmakers.

Also in the collection: A 1969 Shelby GT500 in Jade Black, which is a rare color on any Shelby model, especially this one: Equipped with manual transmission as well as the Drag Pack option, it’s the only such example ever produced.

And these are just some of the rare and vintage vehicles to discover when the museum opens its doors early next year. The center will be offering self-guided visits and docent-led tours, while school groups will also be welcomed. NBM

JULIE LAUGHTON

Julie Laughton’s custom home construction projects are both stunning and timeless. She combines her architectural background and design expertise with her construction and general contractor experience to provide her client’s with a one-stop shop to bring their dream home to life.

When is one of the best times of year to begin a home construction project?

Right after the New Year is one of the best times to start a home construction project. During the holidays, make notes on what works and doesn’t work in your home. Also, when you entertain you will realize where you need to add on to your space or remove walls. Or, you may realize you need a brand new house built from scratch and it’s time to move.

Do most people live in their home while it’s being remodeled?

The big question about remodeling is, do you stay or do you go? Most people can’t stay in their home during a remodel. Whether you are moving out to remodel or building a custom home, you have a lot of homework to do before the project starts. That mainly entails who you are going to hire and work with.

How do you help your client’s through the custom home design process?

My work is one hundred percent custom, so I take the client through a detailed process regarding all of the layout, the design and the selections. It’s a detailed, organized and seamless process.

What separates you from the rest in your field?

WHAT CLIENTS SAY:

My dear Mina,

We want to thank you once more – actually a thousand times more –for the seemingly inexhaustible efforts you put into both listing and securing the buyer for our home in Newport Beach.

We appreciate that it was not a slam dunk task, yet you managed to pull it all off with grace and professional aplomb. Added to that was the warmth and the beautiful never-ending smile, which is a constant in your persona.

You did a fantastic job marketing our home including gorgeous brochures, endless open houses (even on holidays), numerous showings, and great follow-up with every single person who came through with or without an agent. That’s not to mention the frequent meetings Rod asked of you, dealing with his wanting everything-done-yesterday attitude, nor the times you managed to talk him off the ledge when I asked that of you. There was nothing you wouldn’t do.

You made us feel like we were your ONE AND ONLY CLIENT, though we knew that you also had numerous other listings and buyers to care for. We simply cannot figure out how you managed to do that yet seem to be available to us at the drop of a hat!

Your understanding, encouragement, patience, and sympathetic ear were always there anytime and any day. There was not even one time that we asked anything of you that you didn’t manage to make yourself immediately available. Meanwhile you were selling numerous houses and securing new listings daily. So much so that you continued (and still continue) to be a top agent in the country, California, Newport Beach, our neighborhood, and your office. You are sincerely amazing!

While keeping in mind that I was in real estate sales for thirty years and therefore naturally hyper critical of other agents, we feel as if we won the lottery in having had you represent us in this most emotional move and transaction for us. Your dedication and professionalism were exceptional. And your friendship is a treasure.

Thank you over and over again,

– Marie and Rod Deremiah

COCKTAILS WITH A HEALTH KICK

THESE BETTER-FOR-YOU ADULT BEVERAGES ALLOW FOR HOLIDAY INDULGENCE WITHOUT THE GUILT.

One of the biggest trends when it comes to enjoying some much-deserved libations this holiday season is a shift toward more healthful choices. People are turning to drinks with less sugar, less alcohol, natural mixers, fresh ingredients and organic options—for just as much flavor, but without the guilt.

Here are some of the ways local favorites like Lido Bottle Works, Fable & Spirit and Louie’s By the Bay are concocting beverages that are just as satisfying, but offer the opportunity to make good on those upcoming diet-related New Year’s resolutions.

DRINK YOUR FRUIT AND VEGETABLES

True Food Kitchen at Fashion Island understands that eating good-tasting, good-for-you food makes people feel better and serves as a foundation for a happy, balanced lifestyle. But making healthy choices doesn’t mean sacrificing all the fun of enjoying a tasty cocktail. True Food serves a selection of better-for-you drinks like its signature Citrus Skinny Margarita, a fan favorite that mixes organic tequila, orange, mint and cucumber. There’s also Prairie Royale which is a simple, flavorful combination of organic vodka, cassis and lemon.

Several juicy options are also served at Tupelo Junction Cafe—whose name was inspired by the song “Tupelo Honey” by Van Morrison, the favorite vocal artist of cafe founder and owner Amy Scott. Tupelo gives off vibes of a funky twist on southern comfort. Here, cocktails come in Mason jars and the walls are decorated with fruit crate label art pieces. Those who want to indulge in a sweet, but not too sinful treat should try Tupelo’s Pink Flamingo Paloma. “It’s my favorite drink on the menu,” Scott says. “It’s made with freshsqueezed pink grapefruit juice, fresh lime juice, Casamigos tequila blanco and a splash of simple syrup, shaken on ice and served in a martini glass.”

Not far away at Fable & Spirit, visitors can find a perfect mix of traditional drinks as well as lighter, brighter options such as the Pod Goals cocktail amid the eatery’s high ceilings, Georgian-style gold door and peacock blue walls that make for a warmer, cheerier version of an Irish pub. The Pod

Goals drink begins by infusing Roku Gin with sugar snap peas, which is then combined with yellow Chartreuse, Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur, fresh lemon juice, cucumber bitters and aquafaba— the leftover liquid from cooked chickpeas is an egg white substitute to create a frothy foam. The libation gets its spunky name after a word play on the term “squad goals” and the recent popularity of sticking together with your “pod” when going out.

“Pod Goals is my personal favorite cocktail on our menu—it’s actually my No. 1 favorite creation ever,” says Drew Coyle, Fable & Spirits’ director of spirits. “A lot of people only think about fresh fruit when it comes to cocktails. I’m always wanting to integrate herbs and vegetables and think outside the box for flavor.”

Helmsman Ale House offers not one, but two large bars crafting cocktails and pouring beer and wine as well as a curated selection from guest breweries in a casual and inviting atmosphere. And in addition to using fresh juices and ingredients in the drinks program, Helmsman also creates rotating beer varieties that are literally packed with fruit (during the brewing process, at least).

Head Brewer Greg Suchsland adds pounds upon pounds of fresh fruit, spices and herbs to his brews, infusing flavor and creating a fresh and less guilt-inducing limited-release selection of beers. Fan favorites in the past have included the Watermelon Basil and Lime Jalapeno sours; On the Rocks With Salt, a margarita-inspired gose (a German sour) with jalapenos and cucumbers; and a Peach Apricot IPA. This winter, Helmsman will release a Newport Blonde variant infused with black tea, agave, orange and lemon.

SIPS WITH LESS SUGAR

Nestled into a harborside spot in Lido Marina Village, Lido Bottle Works serves a tasty combination of new American cuisine prepared with local and sustainable ingredients, paired with craft beer, wine and cocktails. To turn up the flavor while turning down the added sugars of other too-sweet cocktails, try the Shore Break, which tastefully combines a delicious balance of kombucha, lavender and “bubbles” to create a fresh blend that won’t break any diets. For those who want a bit more of a “pick-me-up” drink, Dawn Patrol mixes fermented vodka, coconut and cold brew for a caffeinated combination sans guilt.

Louie’s By The Bay also offers drinks with less sugar added. The modern Italian steakhouse, at once elegant and comfortable, is perched on the water along Mariner’s Mile in Newport Beach. For a healthier sip while taking in the 180-degree view of Newport Bay, try the signature Gwen’s Garden cocktail, which thoughtfully combines Surf City

a zero-proof cocktail at Tommy

Still Works gin, cucumber, snap pea and lemon juice with celery bitters and tonic to create a fresh, light and zesty cocktail combo that’s got all of the good flavor with none of the bad feelings.

Stag Bar & Kitchen—more commonly known as “The Stag” by regulars—is one of Southern California’s oldest continuously operating bars, having operated for more than a century. But this bar’s seasoned lifespan hasn’t impacted its ability to keep up with the trends of modern times. The historic establishment offers a refreshing sip called the Cucumber Cooler, which brings together gin, elderflower liqueur, fresh lemon juice, agave, basil leaves and sliced cucumber.

LIQUORLESS LIBATIONS

The Tommy Bahama Restaurant, Bar & Store in Corona del Mar creates numerous zero-proof beverages that are just as enjoyable, but with none of the extra calories that alcohol can add to mixed drinks. Try the Blue My Mind, which combines muddled blueberries, passion fruit and scratch-made lemonade for a refreshing blend, or the Pain Chiller drink, which brings together orange, pineapple, cream of coconut and nutmeg to create a fun twist on the well-known Painkiller drink—it’s still a trip to the Caribbean, but it’s truly pain-free. NUZUNA USES EMS TECHNOLOGY TO HELP YOU EXERCISE SMARTER, NOT LONGER

Nuzuna has always been at the forefront of fitness innovation. Now, using EMS technology, see how they can help you boost your training routine (and realize results) in a fraction of the time.

• EMS stands for Electro Muscle Stimulation. A cutting-edge technology that mimics the body’s nervous system and activates muscle tissue through low and mid-frequency currents to significantly increase the body’s natural muscle contractions. As a result, these contractions act as resistance, making each exercise movement 3x more intense.

• A 20-minute EMS Training session activates 60% more muscle fibers; equivalent to 3 hours of a traditional exercise. When muscle fibers are more activated, fat burning is stimulated and continues at full speed even after EMS Training, which leads to a higher basal metabolic rate and burning more excess fat.

• As technology maneuvers its way into the fitness industry, not having time to exercise is no longer an excuse. Thanks to Nuzuna’s wireless EMS technology, you can now achieve 3-hour of exercise results in just 20 minutes. Why trade your health for extra time when you can have BOTH when you exercise with EMS?

FITNESS FUN

THESE WORKOUT OPTIONS TAKE EXERCISE BEYOND THE TRADITIONAL TREADMILL OR STATIONARY BIKE.

During the lockdowns of the COVID19 pandemic, many gyms and fitness centers that had to close their doors went the extra mile to keep their members motivated and created online and Zoom versions of their usual in-house classes. Now that many of the restrictions have been lifted and life is slowly returning to normal, more and more fitness enthusiasts are looking for engaging in-person classes and activities to get their heartbeats racing, and local fitness centers are happy to oblige.

“When everything shut down, it left a lot of people scrambling to figure out how to stay fit and active. We all know it took a big toll on our physical and mental health,” says Rockreation General Manager Alan Aguirre.

Luckily, Newport Beach has many options—that feel more like play than exercise—to offer fitness newbies, experienced workout buffs and everyone in between.

OUTSIDE THE BOX

For those searching for a different kind of fullbody workout—and interested in trying rock climbing since it debuted at the Olympics over the summer—Rockreation in Costa Mesa offers a wide variety of classes ranging from introductory climbing and technique classes to personal coaching and even yoga classes for all abilities. The gym also hosts classes that cater to younger climbers, and offers activities such as birthday parties as well as kids climbing sessions and camps.

“Fitness and climbing, specifically, if I may be so bold, has such an amazing impact on our mental and physical well-being. So, of course, getting fitness centers open again is so incredibly important,” Aguirre explains.

“The thing about climbing is that you are having so much fun figuring out how to get to the top of these climbs that you forget you are working out. You forget until the next day when you feel

Alex Arreguin, founder and CEO of Boxing Lab, which modernizes the sport in a hip and fun gym environment that allows participants to focus on building strength and endurance

soreness in muscles you didn’t even know you had. But it’s that amazing feeling that you’re getting stronger that keeps you coming back for more.”

Other outside-of-the-box workout options in the Newport Beach area include classes at The Bar Method, a fitness studio that puts the focus on using a ballet barre and your own body weight; SoulCycle, which offers participants a high-energy, indoor cycling workout; or the Boxing Lab, dedicated to building strength and endurance.

“Boxing is such an empowering experience for most,” says Boxing Lab founder and CEO Alex Arreguin. “Boxing Lab modernizes traditional boxing in a more hip and fun gym environment. Even though we are known for having a more fast-paced boxing class, our members enjoy the challenge and, as they get better, you can see the personal growth each of them takes pride in.

“It really is a workout where you might be

intimidated at first, but once you take that first step, you are hooked and keep coming back for more.”

ON THE MAT

“During time away from the gym, many have missed their yoga mats and Pilates machines, but there is no shortage of these fitness options in Newport Beach either.

Keely Watson, owner of Club Pilates, says her establishment offers a variety of Reformer-based group Pilates classes complemented by TRX suspension bodyweight training, Springboard, EXO Chair and other equipment as well as TriggerPoint massage therapy tools for myofascial release.

“All of our classes are designed to build strength, mobility and stability, and are offered in a variety of levels,” Watson says. “Whether someone is brand new to Pilates or a seasoned practitioner, we have a class for them. Additionally, we offer private

training for those looking for that one-on-one experience and personally tailored workout.”

At Ra Yoga in Newport, instructor and marketing manager Shelby Nesheim credits the studio’s yoga community with helping each other to stay positive during the COVID-19 shutdowns and doing everything possible to keep Ra Yoga alive.

The studio quickly adapted in every way possible, including creating an online streaming platform and temporarily holding classes outside.

“We are now back—and stronger than ever— with a full schedule of classes in-studio and online. Our three open studio locations in Costa Mesa, Newport Beach and Long Beach each offer around nine classes per day, with styles including vinyasa, Yogalates, strength, hot, yin, prenatal, sound healing and meditation,” Nesheim explains. “Our online streaming platform, Ra Yoga Live, has multiple new classes added each day, and we are also

Kids classes are offered at Rockreation (above and opposite page), making rock climbing an activity the whole family can do.

excited to be reintroducing babysitting, [which is now available] at our Costa Mesa location.”

GET WITH THE GROUP

Cycling, barre and yoga classes offer a great group dynamic, but if you’re interested in moving your body in a different way while still in a group setting, dance and cardio classes or circuit training may pique your interest.

Shape-Up Health Club in Corona del Mar offers different levels of personal training programs and nutritional coaching, as well as a variety of group exercise classes including cardio dance, Zumba, yoga, barre, Pilates mat, TRX, low-impact strength and high-intensity interval training.

“Our morning classes are especially popular with the various dance classes taught by our very talented instructors,” says Group Exercise Director Denise Bartlett. “Additionally, we have a Sculpt low-impact class utilizing bands, balls and light weights that is highly attended each week.

“The men and women who attend our dancetype classes not only look forward to the cardio

workout they receive, but they also enjoy the upbeat, lively music and the creative and traditional moves taught by our professional, certified instructors. They also enjoy the social connection with other members and look forward to seeing and dancing with them throughout the week.”

Also in Newport Beach, CAZ Training Club

offers group circuit training classes, moving participants through strength and cardio stations, mixing it up on different days to keep gymgoers from getting bored. CAZ, which recently completed a remodel, also has launched a spin studio in Irvine with free access for the Newport gym members and also gives back a portion of revenue

to charity each month based on achieving class attendance goals. Meanwhile, F45 Training offers group sessions designed to provide a functional full-body workout—a mix of circuit and HIITstyle exercise—in a short 45-minute class.

No matter what you choose to be your next fitness endeavor, it’s important to remember to take things slowly and ease back into workouts as your body allows.

“Do a little bit every day. Start small and be consistent. Don’t jump in and think, ‘I’m going to work out as hard as I was before’ right off the bat—that will put you out a week to recover, and then you’ll have to start all over again,” Aguirre says.

“I know, personally, how difficult getting back into a routine can be. It can feel daunting and, oftentimes, we feel alone in this journey with little to no motivation. … Finding an awesome community and support system that you can reach out to, or that can reach out to you, to encourage you to keep going is also probably among the best things you can have to get back into an awesome routine.”

Arreguin adds that working out can also contribute to preserving a person’s mental and emotional well-being.

“Keeping your body healthy and staying active is not only going to help you physically, but also mentally,” he says. “Keeping active can help eliminate stress and depression, which is a common concern among many people during these times.” NBM

TRANQUIL TREATMENTS

GIFT YOURSELF A DAY OF REST, RELAXATION AND REJUVENATION WITH SOME PAMPERING TIME AT THE SPA THIS HOLIDAY SEASON.

It’s no secret that Newport Beach residents and visitors alike are highly health-conscious, often weaving fitness and wellness routines into their everyday lifestyles. But sometimes, the best way to improve well-being is to take some time off from the “go-go-go” mentality and opt in for a slower day of rest and relaxation.

Here are some of the latest and greatest treatments at spas around Newport Beach that are perfect to de-stress as well as feel and look your best at any holiday party this season—or to recover from all the yuletide celebrations.

THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Immediately upon entering the foyer of The Spa at Pelican Hill, guests can feel free to shed their troubles. A waterfall on one wall creates a calming presence— a soothing soundtrack that sets the stage for a tranquil sense of inner peace.

“You feel it the minute you get out of your car—you’ll be taken care of,” says Lynne Hite, the resort’s director of spa. “I think people are emerging from this past year with the goals of caring for themselves, and reprioritizing and resisting going back to not being able to take time to dedicate time to themselves. It’s been really rewarding to see people surrender and say, ‘I’m going to be a priority for me.’ ”

A massage (above) and Colonnade (right) at The Spa at Pelican Hill

With that in mind, Hite shares some of this winter’s hottest upcoming treatments to consider for “me time.”

“When people come to the spa, they say they’d love to get a body treatment, but they also want to get a massage,” she says. “So, we’re coming out with a special 90-minute treatment that will give the best of both worlds: You’ll get the body scrub and the massage.”

The Aromatherapy Glow and Massage through November begins with a warm pumpkin spice sugar scrub with the scents of cinnamon, cardamom and ginger to smooth away dull skin and promote circulation. A relaxing full-body massage follows, and the treatment ends with a warm scalp oil ritual. Also offered, a seasonal tea mirrors the scents in the sugar scrub plus the flavors of cloves and nutmeg to enhance the moment.

In December, the treatment changes to a mint exfoliating sugar scrub with notes of both peppermint and ginger followed by a chocolate cream body butter and a choice of Nutcracker or organic Sugar Plum Fairy tea, which each feature peppermint to match the scent in the treatment.

STAYCATION RELAXATION

The Spa at Balboa Bay Resort offers a whole host of treatments for those seeking to indulge by mixing and matching more than one facial, massage or scrub during a staycation at the property, but this winter’s seasonal scrub is a must-try.

“We will be offering a delightful peppermint scrub for the month of December,” says Linnea Robertson,

the resort’s director of spa. “But my personal favorite treatment is the Sea Shell Massage.” For this option, tiger striped shells are massaged rhythmically along the body in combination with heat technology for both warmth and relaxation. “It’s a unique treatment not available at many spas and really celebrates our location and connection to the sea,” Robertson says.

Another coveted treatment is a CBD Remedy Massage with the therapeutic benefits of CBD oil, which can reduce inflammation and anxiety; the oil is available in three scents including eucalyptus, lavender or pomegranate as well as unscented.

The spa is only open to overnight resort guests

and Balboa Bay Club members, but this means the space feels less crowded and more tranquil. To complement the “locals only” feeling, the property is offering a Relax, Refresh, Renew package through March to help guests truly feel pampered. The package bundles together one guest room and a $100 spa credit—all visitors have to do is show up, book some treatments and tune out at the spa.

GOOD VIBRATIONS

at Kannabis Works (2106 S Susan St, Santa Ana, CA 92704)

staff worked with a sound guru, who has studied the practice of sound healing under a gong master for five years, to develop the treatment, which is believed to be the first of its kind in Orange County and truly brings facials to the next level.

“We really want to focus on people’s overall wellness—just making them feel confident and beautiful,” says Rebekah Zepfel, founder and owner of Lemon & Honey.

To begin, estheticians spark the sweetest of songs using tuning forks and Tibetan singing bowls; these tools are combined with a facial treatment that’s tailored to each guest’s skin type. The sound waves vibrating on and inside the body create a sensation of healing and leave spagoers feeling deeply rested and glowing from the inside out. According to the spa, sound therapy also causes the body’s cells to release nitric oxide, which rejuvenates through increased blood flow and allows for a higher level of mental clarity.

“You feel tingly and euphoric after the Ohm Facial Treatment,” Zepfel says. “It’s such a great reset for feeling calm and clear, and getting your balance and clarity back to be in the moment.”

A FESTIVE BOOST

The upbeat spirit felt within Lido House hotel’s Boost Spa sets the stage for both revitalization and tranquility. For the holiday season, the spa’s seasonal peppermint spice sugar scrub treatment brings together a delightful blend of brown sugar and a carefully crafted mix of peppermint, vanilla, cinnamon bark and clove oils to gently exfoliate the body and leave the skin feeling exceptionally soft.

This curated combination of essential oils promotes health benefits by boosting energy and cognitive health while also reducing stress. It’s the perfect way to prepare for the hectic holiday season or to take a breather in the middle of the hustle and bustle.

A HOT TREND

Perhaps the most notable treatment at Spa Gregorie’s is the infrared sauna. Even though it doesn’t get much colder than 60 degrees outside during Southern California winters, this infrared technology—one of the hottest trends in wellness—is sure to warm you up.

Infrared saunas host a number of healing advantages for the body, such as relieving muscle pain, removing toxins, improving the skin and boosting the immune system.

Pair some time in the sauna with another treatment for a day or even just an afternoon of relaxation. Upon walking into Spa Gregorie’s, visitors will immediately encounter a tranquil combination of soothing colors and music, flickering candles and scents paired perfectly to calm the nervous system and encourage a state of calm. Seasonal treatment favorites include the classic peppermint foot scrub, which is an ideal way to destress.

“Our peppermint foot scrub uses pure peppermint essential oils along with a sugar-based scrub that is massaged into the feet during either a facial or massage service,” says Angela Cortright, owner and founder of Spa Gregorie’s. “The feet are refreshed, exfoliated, revived and ready for holiday shopping.”

A YOUTHFUL GLOW

At Facial Lounge in Corona del Mar, all services offered are plant-based, organic, vegan, nut-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, nontoxic and pregnancy safe—a perfect fit for practically any lifestyle change inspired by a healthy New Year’s resolution. And the spa’s Forma Facial is an especially unique treatment known to seemingly turn back time for tired skin.

This noninvasive therapy is an “instant face-lift” that works by using radio-frequency energy to stimulate the creation of new collagen, improving skin elasticity. While no one can stop from growing older, this process can keep your appearance looking younger and fresher for longer. NBM

POWDER POWERHOUSES

HIT THE SLOPES ON FRESHLY GROOMED TRAILS WITH PLENTY OF AMENITIES AT SOME OF THE WEST’S BEST SKI RESORTS THIS SEASON.

Southern California is often a slice of paradise, with year-round sunshine and warm weather that makes Christmas on the coast feel more like springtime than winter. However, there is something magical about spending time in the snow during the holiday season. Covering the land in a fluffy white blanket, the views are breathtaking while activities like skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling and snowshoeing get your blood pumping while presenting unique ways to explore these winter wonderlands. Luckily, plenty of options abound once ski season hits. Whether it’s a weekend visit to Big Bear, a road trip to Mammoth or a quick flight to Park City, Utah, our practical locale offers a number of places—near and far—to enjoy the snow this year.

BIG BEAR

Roughly 100 miles away from Newport Beach, Big Bear is close as can be—a two-hour trip one way makes it the perfect place for a weekend getaway or even a day trip.

Big Bear Mountain Resort comprises two different mountains: Bear Mountain and Snow Summit. The former is a more vibrant, youthful iteration, filled with more than 200 features, from terrain parks and halfpipes to backcountry areas as well as the largest beginner area in the state of California; Snow Summit, on the other hand, offers more traditional ski and snowboard runs with over 240 acres, an advanced snowmaking system and a tubing park. There are 16 black diamond or double black diamond trails between the two properties, making it a great escape for expert-level skiers, while both have quite a few easy runs and a good number of moderate ones for those who are less experienced.

When it comes to apres ski, Laybacks at Bear Mountain features a 13,000-square-foot deck for basking in the sun. Just outside the main lodge, the all-day menu includes pre-mixed drinks, handcrafted cocktails, craft beers and more, and also offers passholder discounts. Over at Snow Summit,

Bighorn Smokehouse is a great place to dine, with plenty of barbecue classics as well as grab-and-go items. Snow Summit is also home to Slopeside Speakeasy, located at the bottom of chairlift 2, where no password is required to recline on the outdoor deck and sip cocktails.

New this year is a mobile app, which launched in early November, designed to make booking lift tickets, equipment rentals and lessons easier than ever; the app, along with the new Big Bear Mountain Resort website, also provides dynamic content related to the slopes. In addition, gates with RFID (radio frequency identification) technology have been installed at each lift to expedite the process of getting on the mountain, eliminating the need for lift attendants to scan each pass. Guests may also purchase lift tickets online in advance and grab them from recently established PUBs, or pickup boxes, at the mountain base areas.

Another addition this year is the dual season pass, which is valid for the 2021-2022 season, providing unlimited access to both mountains during the wintertime as well as Summit Bike Park during the summer. Opening dates for the ski season are currently set at Nov. 25 for Snow Summit and Nov. 26 for Bear Mountain.

Elsewhere in the region, a free trolley service launches this fall, offering a new way to traverse the Big Bear area. Stopping at the ski resorts as well as the downtown village, the local alpine zoo and Boulder Bay, three routes ensure you can get around with ease. The Big Bear Ropes Course that started just before the pandemic is back and better than ever, while a new Santa Land attraction educates visitors on Kris Kringle’s place in history and pop culture with various themed rooms.

While there are plenty of changes on the mountain itself, a number of fundamental and cultural alterations were announced this year as well. The local Care for Big Bear campaign, set in motion by Visit Big Bear, is a call to action to preserve and protect the natural playground by doing things like packing out trash, staying on trails, taking nothing but photographs and more.

Alterra Mountain Co., parent company of Big Bear Mountain Resort as well as Mammoth Mountain up north, has also partnered with a number of other companies in the ski industry (including Vail Resorts, which owns Park City Mountain Resort) on the the Climate Collaborative Charter. Announced in June, the companies have pledged to implement sustainable practices on the slopes.

Left and bottom right: Big Bear Mountain Resort comprises two different mountains: Bear Mountain, which is a youthful spot filled with terrain parks, and Snow Summit, which offers more traditional runs. Top right: There are a number of apres ski venues where visitors can eat, drink and warm up around a fire pit after a day on the slopes.

MAMMOTH LAKES

With unparalleled conditions and an extra long ski season, Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is easily one of the most prominent on the West Coast. Located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California, the resort enjoys, on average, 400 inches of snowfall and 300 sunny days per year alongside 3,500 skiable acres. And with a summit of 11,053 feet, it’s the highest mountain ski resort in all of California, ensuring a spirited trip with plenty of terrain to explore.

Ringing in at roughly 350 miles away, the sixhour drive is definitely doable. But there are other options as well, as new air services launch this fall. On Nov. 24, Los Angeles-based Advanced Airlines will fly 30-passenger jets from both the Burbank and Hawthorne airports to Mammoth Yosemite Airport. An additional route from United Airlines will launch in December as well, operating seasonal daily direct flights between Los Angeles and the Eastern Sierra Regional Airport in Bishop (roughly 50 miles from the ski resort).

The majority of the trails at Mammoth are difficult or very difficult, with only 15% listed as easy. But with 175 runs, 10 terrain parks and two halfpipes to explore, there is sure to be something for everyone. Small group lessons for children as

young as 3 are available while Adult Discovery lessons help build confidence and clinics ensure a mastery of technique.

For a unique apres ski experience, visit the CocaCola Lounge at McCoy Station between runs. The customizable freestyle machine ensures you can grab your favorite soda alongside a variety of food options; floats are also available. In addition to the new lounge, Tusks Bar offers on-mountain drinks, a sundeck and 15 high-definition televisions to keep up with current sports games. Or head to Broadway Marketplace to enjoy made-to-order ramen, brick-oven pizzas, grilled specials, rotating salads and more.

This year, a land swap was completed, securing the space the main lodge is located on for the ski resort (it was formerly owned by the U.S. Forest Service). Large-scale improvements of this base region may now take place, including on Mammoth Mountain Inn and the surrounding areas.

Accomodations in the region are also being updated, with guest rooms at The Westin Monache Resort, Mammoth, already live with new paint, carpet, furniture, artwork and more. A second phase is set to open this spring with renovations to the lobby, Whitebark Restaurant and more. This winter will also see the addition of new luxury rental homes for

large groups at the Obsidian Residences, Hillside Highlands and Snowcreek Resort.

Around town, a few new openings are in store as well. Already unveiled is Mammoth Coffee Roasting Co. Located in the heart of downtown Mammoth Lakes, this handmade coffee shop offers a variety of drinks and baked goods as well as a monthly coffee club with out-of-theregion delivery. Also under construction and expected to open around summer 2022 is the Mammoth Lakes Community Recreation Center at Mammoth Creek Park, complete with an Olympic-sized ice skating rink that will be covered in the summertime with tiles to create an alternative RecZone.

Night of Lights returns Dec. 18 this year as well, with a fireworks spectacular taking place over the snow-capped mountain. The free event features live music, activities for the kids and more before the show starts.

While the season typically runs from November to June, it has already started this year, opening Oct. 29 with a weekendlong kickoff party. Guests were treated to music, a beer toast, a hard rockthemed costume contest, a scavenger hunt and more, and the slopes are expected to stay open into late June 2022.

Mammoth Mountain Ski Area offers 3,500 skiable acres and an average of 300 sunny days per year, making it one of the most popular ski regions in California.

PARK CITY, UTAH

If you’re going to venture outside of California, you may as well head to Park City, Utah, where the local ski resort is the largest in the United States: We’re talking over 7,300 acres with more than 330 runs and over 40 different ski lifts. Only 30 minutes from the Salt Lake City airport (with nonstop flights from John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana clocking in an under two hours), half of the trails at Park City Mountain Resort are expert level while 42% are intermediate, making this locale a better place for experienced athletes than those just starting out. However, the resort does have some learning spaces dedicated to beginners. The Winter Olympics also took place here in 2002.

Special events are returning to the mountain this year after a COVID-induced break last season. Everything kicks off Nov. 19 with an opening day celebration followed by a tree lighting ceremony Nov. 26. In mid-December, the beloved Snowfest returns with carolers, ice sculptures, live music, special activities and more—as well as a visit from

Santa as he traditionally comes down the ski lift to say hello and take photos.

Early next year, Park City will also host the famed Sundance Film Festival once again in January 2022, an event founded by Robert Redford that showcases independent cinema.

Set in a historic mining town that was incorporated in the 1880s, there is much to experience in the surrounding area as well. A free bus system makes it easy to traverse the region while ski-inski-out access from Main Street via the Town Lift makes it easy to combine skiing or snowboarding with dining, shopping, spa treatments, entertainment and more.

When it comes to apres ski, the options truly are endless, with both on-mountain and off-mountain eateries. The High West Saloon is a ski-in gastrodistillery with sips like stirred and strong or light and refreshing cocktails, beers, wines and whiskey flights plus a menu of appetizers and entrees that pair well with the drinks. Another ski-in locale, Mid-Mountain Lodge, is housed in a historic

boarding house that was once home to local miners. With fire pit tables on the deck and signature dishes like flame-broiled chicken, a porchetta sandwich and a poke bowl, there is a wide array of flavors to choose from. And for fine dining with a view, Lookout Cabin is a must.

And when trying to figure out where to stay on your ski trip, consider Pendry Park City, a new luxury property from Montage International that opens in January 2022. As the first mountain resort from Pendry Hotels & Resorts, it will offer an elevated approach to the alpine setting, with sophisticated spaces, innovative dining and unparalleled service.

Pendry Park City will feature more than 150 guest rooms, suites and residences, with a design of warm woods, stone and metal. Dining and lounge spaces include a Japanese-American steakhouse, a vibrant pizza parlor, a rooftop pool/bar and more. The resort is also home to a fitness center, a kids club, meeting/event venues and a spot for ski and snowboard rentals. NBM

PARTY ON THE PENINSULA

NO MATTER WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING TO CELEBRATE, THIS VERSATILE VENUE HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE, FROM A NIGHTCLUB AND YACHT PARTIES TO FINE DINING.

There are few spots in Newport Beach that offer it all, but trust us when we say that The Peninsula Lounge does: It’s part restaurant, part nightclub, with added games, parties and experiences to be had.

Downstairs, the dining room surrounds an expansive bar, with some patio seating offering views of the boats venturing through Newport Harbor. Upstairs, another bar, large patio, a dance floor and space carved out for musicians or DJs come together with blue-hued lighting and roomy booths for relaxing and socializing.

But the fun doesn’t end inside. Out front, daytime guests can enjoy yard games like cornhole, bucket ball, giant Jenga and life-size billiards (played with soccer balls). Head to the harbor side to rent kayaks, stand-up paddleboards or Duffy boats for a day out on the water. The Peninsula Lounge also owns a yacht that diners can rent for parties.

First opened in early 2020, the concept and ownership changed in June 2020; several months of renovations started around the same time.

Upstairs, patrons typically order appetizers or desserts, but downstairs, anything on the menu is fair game—and an extensive wine list offers the perfect pairings. Chef Kosetsu Taguchi, who has worked locally at the Pelican Grill at The Resort at Pelican Hill as well as Hotel Joaquin in Laguna Beach, took the helm only a few months ago, but is already putting his touch on the menu.

Taguchi is replacing the previous ahi poke dish

with an elevated tuna tartare, combining shallots, avocado, cilantro, truffle oil and panca, a Peruvian chile. He’s also changing up the plant-based superfood salad, adding earthy beets and piquant tomatoes to the mixture that already features baby kale, spring mix, avocado, hemp seeds, flax meal, quinoa, MCT coconut oil (a concentrated form) and a pomegranate vinaigrette. The rich truffle and beet flavors are complemented by the crisp sweetness of Sakura rose wine by Domaine Chevrot.

Other starters include rosemary fries with garlic oil, barbecue chicken pizza topped with fried chicken, oysters accompanied by a mignonette made with hibiscus sabdariffa (often used to brew a tea), plus a charcuterie board with cured meats, cheeses, dried fruits, herb-roasted nuts and garlic crostini. When it comes to main entrees, the pan-seared pub steak—sometimes subbed for New York steak on special occasions—is drizzled with chimichurri sauce, peppery parsley and tangy red wine vinegar blending to pack the dish full of flavor. Cooked with butter, thyme, garlic and shallots, the slices of meat are layered atop crisp fingerling potatoes and charred broccolini. And for a sipping wine that enhances the taste of the herbs and meat, try the Jean Chartron

pinot noir from the Burgundy region of France.

Another popular option is the catch of the day, which features seasonal fish such as pan-roasted branzino. Taguchi places each portion on a bed of farro mixed with tomato and arugula, then slathers romesco sauce over the top. The menu also features a salmon dish. Domaine de L’Ermitage makes a surprisingly sweet sauvignon blanc that expertly complements the seafood dishes as well.

If it’s not steak or fish that you fancy, consider the mushroom risotto, mussels with chorizo, edamame pasta or a wagyu burger on a brioche bun.

Save room for dessert, too. The chef’s seasonal cobbler gives him the opportunity to find the best ingredients. An example is the bourbon peach cobbler, which Taguchi crafts using late-harvest fruit that is a little softer while also salvaging peaches that would otherwise go to waste. This boozy, adult dessert packs a punch with plenty of bourbon, while a crumble on top offers pops of crunch.

Aside from the evening menu, diners can stop by for weekend brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. From crabcake eggs Benedict to a frittata and lemon brioche French toast, the choices continue to impress.

Whether you come to dance the night away, unwind with a couple of glasses of wine and a good meal, sip cocktails while cruising the harbor or party out front with games on the weekend, The Peninsula Lounge continues to push the envelope with its unique offerings and versatility. NBM

BEACHY BRUNCH

Situated right on the water with views of the harbor, BILLY’S AT THE BEACH has launched weekend brunch on both Saturdays and Sundays with island-inspired fare like banana and macadamia nut pancakes and Loco Moco. The latter is this eatery’s take on the traditional Hawaiian dish with a pan-seared beef patty, two eggs and jasmine rice, all smothered in rich brown gravy. Plenty of pupus are also offered, from coconut shrimp with sweet-and-spicy Thai sauce to Cho Cho Beef Skewers covered in house-made teriyaki, as well as entrees like fish tacos, chilaquiles, barbecue baby back ribs and a Luau Omelet (with eggs, ham, cheese, Maui onion and bell peppers). Of course, brunch is not complete without a cocktail or two. Diners can’t go wrong with Billy’s World Famous Mai Tai, but the No Way Noe is also tasty with banana rum in a Tiki glass. Additionally, those looking for a different kind of holiday meal may want to check out Billy’s Thanksgiving Eve Late Night Luau with tropical bites from 9 p.m. to closing Nov. 24. Choose from ahi or crispy short rib tacos, kalua pork sliders, ribs and more so you don’t have to cook before spending many hours in the kitchen the next day. MIMOSA MORNINGS

GRACIAS MADRE has brought back its bottomless mimosa brunch complete with live music on Sundays. The restaurant’s vegan, plant-based Mexican cuisine uses ingredients like achiote-marinated tofu, blackened tempeh and mushroom al pastor in place of meat as well as “cheese” made from nut milk. For brunch, choose from starters like nachos with soy chorizo, black beans, pineapple salsa, pico de gallo and cashew nacho cheese, or esquites, which is roasted corn and other veggies with salsa verde, aioli, almond cotija and an herb called epazote. Next, dig into French toast with fresh figs, forest berries and cinnamon-coconut-cashew-coffee whipped cream; chilaquiles with scrambled Just Egg, salsa, black beans, avocado, cilantro and cashew crema; or the Tower of Spuds, which, like it sounds, is a spire of roasted potatoes piled with soy chorizo, cashew nacho cheese, pico de gallo and avocado. To wash it down, boost your bottomless mimosas with infusions like hibiscus, rosemary, lavender or raspberry. Notably, Gracias Madre’s Newport Beach location also recently appointed new Executive Chef Justin Haefler, who previously worked at Red O Restaurant in LA and as a private chef, and new Beverage Director Kacie Lambert. FABLE & SPIRIT in Newport Beach and KNIFE

PLEAT in Costa Mesa both received recognition recently from the Michelin Guide. Fable & Spirit, a modern Irish pub with menu inspirations from around the world, was honored with a Bib Gourmand award in September after last year being named to a list of 25 Michelin inspectors’ discoveries. The Bib Gourmand category includes restaurants of good quality and good value, offering diners the possibility of ordering two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for around $40 or less (without tax or tip). In awarding the Bib Gourmand, Michelin wrote,

“With its elegant design and backdrop of the sparkling sea, this ‘fabled’ spot doesn’t have to try that hard to win fans. And yet, it never rests solely on its good looks. The room is packed with an unmistakable hum of happy diners diving into delicious pub grub.” (949-409-9913; fableandspirit.com)

Later in September, Knife Pleat—located in South Coast Plaza’s penthouse and helmed by the husband-and-wife team of chef Tony Esnault and restaurateur Yassmin Sarmadi— received a coveted Michelin star. Previously, Esnault and Sarmadi earned a Bib Gourmand honor for their now-closed French restaurant, Church & State, in LA. And Esnault has earned a combined five Michelin stars as executive chef at Alain Ducasse at the Essex House and Adour at The St. Regis hotel in New York City. At Knife Pleat, an elegant menu embraces local, organic and seasonal produce, sustainable seafood and meat from farms with humane practices. Among the offerings are weekly six-course tasting dinners with wine pairings. According to Michelin, “The space is small, elegant and well-appointed. … Add on a gleaming open kitchen, chef’s counter, as well as a secluded patio—and you know you’ve struck gold. … The menu highlights imaginative dishes that weave technique with ingenuity.” (714-266-3388; knifepleat.com) —S.S.

SEASONAL

FAVORITES

Situated on Balboa Island, WILMA’S PATIO, a longtime favorite of locals and visitors alike, is once again serving up its pumpkin pancakes through the fall and winter until the first week of January. A tradition for more than 30 years during the holidays, they sell like, well, hotcakes. Filled with fall flavors, the secret ingredient is cloves, but it’s the mix of spices working together for a taste that pairs perfectly with the pumpkin in these fluffy flapjacks. Order a stack of just the pancakes or turn it into a combo with two eggs cooked any style and a choice of bacon, sausage or ham. Additionally, diners’ furry friends have something to look forward to: A menu for dogs is in the works. To be released in coming months, it will be available on the patio. A few of the dog menu items include scrambled eggs, grilled chicken or salmon and a grilled hamburger patty, as well as a side of avocado. A complimentary bowl of water will also be offered for all the doggos. (949-6755542; wilmaspatio.com) —S.S.

HMY 24 HOURS IN NEWPORT

HEIDI ZUCKERMAN, THE NEW DIRECTOR AND CEO OF THE ORANGE COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART, OFFERS A GLIMPSE OF UPCOMING EXHIBITS AND HER GO-TO SPOTS IN NEWPORT.

eidi Zuckerman, who was the longtime director of Aspen Art Museum in Colorado, realized during the pandemic that she wanted to return to the coast, having grown up in Palo Alto in Northern California. So, when the opportunity to lead the Orange County Museum of Art presented itself, she decided to go for it.

“I love California and have spent much of my life here,” Zuckerman says. “Like many people, COVID offered the opportunity to reevaluate what matters most to me, and living by the beach feels essential. I have also been a longtime fan of OCMA and I am incredibly honored to be the CEO and director here.”

She started the position in February and OCMA will move into a new building in late 2022 on the Segerstrom Center campus in Costa Mesa after formerly being located in Newport Beach. A temporary space, OCMAExpand-Santa Ana, closed during the pandemic. Like the Aspen museum she helmed from 2005 to 2019, OCMA’s new structure is also designed by a Pritzker Architecture Prize winner.

THE OM ZONE

When she wants to roll out the yoga mat for some fitness time, Zuckerman heads to EKAM YOGA & PILATES. “Linda Chen is my favorite teacher there,” she says.

During her tenure in Aspen, she worked with the board to reimagine the museum as a world-class institution. Over her career, she has curated more than 200 museum exhibitions and believes it’s important to make contemporary art both accessible and engaging for the public. Here in OC, she’s excited about the possibilities with the new building and a recent announcement that admission will be free for the first decade due to a $2.5 million donation by Newport-based Lugano Diamonds.

“The building is the opportunity to finish Henry Segerstrom’s dream for the Center—OCMA is the final piece of the cultural puzzle here,” she says. “… We are creating the museum for the 21st century. … I believe access to art is a basic human right, not a privilege. Our goal is to remove as many barriers of entry as possible and to connect as many people as we can to art and artists, and free admission is a critical step in that direction.”

Some of the upcoming exhibits include the “California Biennial 2022”; a Zuckerman-curated

FAVORITE FLAVORS

For breakfast, Zuckerman can often be found at CREW COFFEE & CREMERIE at Lido House hotel. “I am obsessed with the overnight oats with peanut butter,” she shares.

exhibition called “13 Women,” which refers to the female founders of the modern and contemporary art museum and will draw from the collection; and “Fred Eversley: Reflecting Back (the World),” his first museum retrospective on North America’s West Coast since the 1970s when he exhibited at OCMA— then known as Newport Harbor Art Museum.

In addition to her work with museums, Zuckerman has written a book series titled “Conversations with Artists”; the third volume is set to come out by year’s end. She also started a podcast, “Conversations About Art,” in 2019 and has since recorded more than 70 episodes.

“On the podcast, we talk about art and ideas around art and uncertainty, art and happiness, and art and spirituality,” she says. “I speak to all sorts of people in addition to visual artists, curators and collectors—I talk to athletes, actors, musicians, politicians and CEOs, people I admire and respect, about these topics. The hope always is to connect people to art, artists and ideas to make their lives better.”

OCEANFRONT DINING

For meals with a view, THE DOCK serves up an impressive menu right by the harbor. “The decor and location and ambiance is amazing,” Zuckerman says.

VEGAN-FRIENDLY FARE

With plenty of veggie-forward dishes, MALIBU FARM is a go-to for Zuckerman. “I’m vegan, so I love eating here because there are so many options for me,” she says.

COASTAL CRUISING

For Zuckerman, a boat ride through Newport Harbor is the perfect way to spend some time out on the water. “My family and I love to rent a Duffy [from DUFFY ELECTRIC BOAT CO.] and spend a few hours motoring around the islands,” she says. NBM
