To Everyone Who Lives Here,

Ahwatukee Means Home By Alison Stanton

W

elcome to Ahwatukee! To help newcomers to this beautiful community, let’s start off with a quick lesson in how to pronounce the name: It’s Ah-WahTOO-Key. Next, to answer a question that you will probably get over and over from your friends and relatives in other states, the word “Ahwatukee” doesn’t seem to mean anything specific. Granted, there has been a rumor circulating around for years that the name apparently was a Crow Nation translation for the Spanish phrase “Casa de Sueños” or “House of Dreams.” However, historians who have researched this claim have decided that this is not the case. But no worries—even if you cannot share a specific meaning of Ahwatukee’s name, you can definitely let others know what you love about living here. And, as it turns out, there are plenty of reasons. According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, almost 86,000 people live in Ahwatukee. Although it is technically part of Phoenix, it does not have that big-city vibe. In fact, residents often say Ahwatukee resembles Mayberry much more than Manhattan. In Ahwatukee, which was once referred to as the “World’s Largest Culde-Sac,” neighbors get to know each other. Quick trips to the grocery store to grab bread and milk often turn into marathon chat sessions with friends who are shopping there. Head to a local coffee shop for a cup of inspiration or to a family-owned restaurant for lunch and plenty of familiar faces will probably be there, too. This small-town feel means Ahwatukee residents have the best of both worlds: life in a family-friendly and welcoming community that feels more relaxed than rat race—all with easy access to everything the Valley 6

AHWATUKEE FOOTHILLS NEWS NEWCOMERS’ GUIDE

has to offer. Having said this, please do not think that Ahwatukee is lacking in things to do or places to go. If you enjoy eating out, the community boasts a wide selection of top-notch restaurants that cater to every whim. In the mood for Mexican, Italian, sushi or just an amazing sandwich? Residents won’t have to venture far to find these choices. For shopaholics, Ahwatukee offers a variety of stores including nationally known retailers and smaller boutiques. The shopping centers at 48th Street and Ray Road are always busy as are plenty of other stores throughout the community. It also takes a few minutes to go south on 40th Street to Phoenix Premium Outlets, to head east on Ray Road over the I-10 freeway to Casa Paloma or to visit Chandler Fashion Center, off the Loop 202 freeway. Speaking of the Loop 202, the expansion project for the freeway is well underway and when it’s finished, it is anticipated to help make commuting out of Ahwatukee even easier. In other words, that largest cul-de-sac nickname is quickly becoming outdated. In better times, Ahwatukee is home to community events that take place during the year. The annual Easter Parade is a classic example, with high school bands and floats aplenty. Dance Studio 111 puts on amazing performances of “The Nutcracker” every year, and students and parents cheer on their fave high school football team during the yearly meeting of Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe High Schools in the “Tukee Bowl.” Annually—when there’s not a pandemic—the Festival of Lights kicks off the holiday season with a huge party in Desert Foothills Park. It culminates in the lighting of the cactus and trees along Chandler Boulevard with thousands of beautiful white lights. Speaking of parks, Ahwatukee has plenty of them, many of which feature walking/biking/jogging trails and

colorful playground equipment for the kids. It’s extremely easy to take advantage of the gorgeous sunny weather and head out for some exercise, whether it’s at a park, a local neighborhood greenbelt or at a nearby hiking trail. As you speak with your new neighbors and ask them what they enjoy about living here, you might also hear “the outstanding school system.” If you share your home with kiddos, you can rest assured that what your new friends are telling you is true. As part of the Kyrene and Tempe Union High school districts, Ahwatukee has plenty of outstanding facilities serving its youngest residents. There are charter schools with great reputations, too. Of course, no discussion about what makes Ahwatukee special would be complete without mentioning its many lovely homes and neighborhoods. Like the restaurants, shops and schools, there is truly something for everyone here in terms of housing—from wellmaintained apartments and condos to family homes and large and luxurious mansions. In fact, some of the spendiest real estate in the Valley of the Sun can be found in Ahwatukee. Singles, couples and families of all sizes can easily find their dream home in Ahwatukee. Many of the homes are located in specific neighborhoods like Lakewood, Mountain Park Ranch, Tapestry Canyon and Ahwatukee Equestrian Estates. All of this brings us back to one of the original questions: the meaning of Ahwatukee. While the word may not officially mean some variation on the phrase “House of Dreams,” you will probably understand why this urban legend stuck around for so long. Ahwatukee is a friendly, scenic and outstanding place to live. The quality of life is high, and the neighbors are friendly and welcoming. For you, and the tens of thousands of others who are proud to live here, Ahwatukee truly does mean “home.”

A brief history of

Ahwatukee Foothills By Martin Gibson

D

riving through the busy streets of Ahwatukee, picking up a few groceries at one of the many supermarkets, taking a relaxing stroll through a scenic park or enjoying takeout from one of dozens of delicious restaurants, it may be hard for current residents of Ahwatukee Foothills as a stretch of empty desert. Actually, old-timers were convinced that the land close to South Mountain would never amount to much. William Ames, a prominent midwestern dentist, purchased 8,000 acres of state land just south of the mountain. He and his wife moved into their 12,000-square-foot winter residence, just off today’s Warner Road, on Thanksgiving Day 1921. The Ames’ luxurious, 17-room ranch house stood for over 50 years, and Mrs. Ames’ land donation helped to make South Mountain Park the country’s largest municipal park. Byron Slawson, the ranch’s caretaker, rose at 4 a.m. to light the house’s water heaters and cart 300-pound blocks of ice from Chandler. Except for early homesteader Arthur Hunter, Slawson lived longer in the future village than anyone has before or since. Today it’s called Mountain Park Ranch, but in 1929 Dr. Alexander Chandler foresaw it as San Marcos in the Desert. Chandler commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design a resort hotel on 600 acres just north of today’s Desert Vista High School. Chandler’s spectacular resort awaited a Fall groundbreaking but was never built due to that October’s stock market crash. Near Mountain Park Ranch’s eastern border, New Yorker William Belden planned his own winter retreat. Three outbuildings were constructed in preparation for Belden’s grand 8

William Ames’ 12,000-square-foot residence built in the 1920s is believed to be Ahwatukee’s first home.

house, but his 1930 death resulted in abandonment of the plans. His family maintained the pristine desert beauty of their eventual 2,670 acres for much of the 20th century. Helen Brinton of Dixon, Illinois, purchased the Ames residence in 1935, and her effort to translate the Ames’ “Casa de Sueños” (Spanish for House of Dreams) into the Crow Indian language resulted in the house and its surrounding acreage being christened “Ahwatukee.” Brinton spent 25 winters at the Ahwatukee ranch before her death in 1960. Bill Collier transformed a square mile of desert into rich, irrigated farmland beginning in 1939. Farming the Collier-Evans Ranch for 45 years, the land epitomized the quaint agricultural charm of the village’s predevelopment. Today, two signature lakes on the land distinguish it as the master-planned community of Lakewood. About 4,140 acres to the west— combining stunning topography with battle-scarred terrain—market International Harvester’s proving grounds. Its steep, winding dirt roads carved high up into the hillsides were perfect for trucks and heavy

equipment testing. Today, Chandler Boulevard’s million white lights, which traditionally begin in late November, provide a gateway to The Foothills and Club West, offering one-of-a-kind vistas. It took the early 1970s vision of Bakersfield, California, homebuilder Randall Presley to transform Ahwatukee from a single ranch house into a thriving community. Before him, the land west of Interstate 10 and south of the mountain was considered remote and unpromising. But Presley’s development of the first master-planned community south of South Mountain stands today as a visionary achievement. In recognition of its prominent place within the city of Phoenix, Ahwatukee, Mountain Park Ranch, Lakewood, The Foothills and Club West were officially designated the Village of Ahwatukee Foothills in 1991. Martin Gibson is an Ahwatukee resident and author of Phoenix’s Ahwatukee Foothills and Historic Tales from Ahwatukee Foothills. Both are available on amazon.com.

Whether you seek friends or volunteer opportunities,

Ahwatukee has you covered By Alison Stanton

f you have ever wanted to spend time volunteering and giving back to the community, you are in luck. There are dozens of organizations, charities and social clubs in Ahwatukee that would be grateful for your time and help. From scouting to American Legion Post 64—Ahwatukee’s only military service organization—to women’s and faith-based groups to service and mentoring entities, residents have almost unlimited choices when it comes to finding like-minded people who live in their community. Many of these organizations post their meetings and activities in the Ahwatukee Foothills News as well as on various community-centric social media sites. Chances are, as well, that people who connect with one community organization likely will find leads to others. Among the oldest, most established organizations are the Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber of Commerce, the Festival of Lights Committee, the American Legion Post 64 and the Kiwanis Club of Ahwatukee, which puts on the annual Easter Parade, one of Ahwatukee’s signature events.

The Festival of Lights Committee for more than two decades is responsible for the brilliant display of one million lights on the median of Chandler Boulevard between 24th Street and Desert Foothills Parkway. To pay for those lights, it puts on two of the biggest community events of the year: the Kick-Off Party, a family-friendly all-day festival held the Saturday after Thanksgiving; and the Wine and Beer Tasting Festival, a springtime, adults-only evening of fun, food and games.

The chamber offers business owners an opportunity to meet other business owners with a stake in the community. There also are two BNI groups for business owners and professionals. The Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA’s Outreach Program for Ahwatukee Seniors, commonly called Y OPAS, offers help to seniors who can’t get around on their own and a wonderful opportunity for people who want to volunteer a few hours a week to help them. Its signature service is transporting seniors in the community to medical appointments, for grocery shopping and even small social occasions. Volunteers can devote as much time as they want to driving these seniors around—and making new friends. Broader charitable groups abound, such as the 100+ Women Who Care Valley of the Sun. Chances to make new friends are also plentiful, with groups like the Ahwatukee Republican Women and Ahwatukee Foothills Friends and Neighbors. You only have to reach out, and there’s someone in Ahwatukee ready to extend a hand in friendship and camaraderie. AHWATUKEE FOOTHILLS NEWS NEWCOMERS’ GUIDE

Great schools and activities make

Ahwatukee great for families

P

arents who are looking for outstanding schools as well as a choice for which elementary, middle school and/or high school their children attend will find exactly that in Ahwatukee. A multitude of options abound, from pre-K through the turning of the tassel at high school graduation. Start with public schools serving the village. The Kyrene School District, for pre-K-8, often wins bond and override elections and then puts the money to good use. The district continues to enjoy a strong academic reputation, with 16 of its schools holding A+ School of Excellence designation from the Arizona Educational Foundation. Parental involvement is welcome and strongly encouraged. The Tempe Union High School District has Mountain Pointe and Desert Vista within Ahwatukee. Mountain Pointe and Desert Vista traditionally produce senior classes that are awarded millions of dollars in scholarships. Their students win academic honors, such as National Merit Scholarships and Flinn Scholarships. The sports teams always are in the running for championships. Band and debate are the pride of Desert Vista and the drama groups in both schools are top-notch. The campuses bear a healthy, diverse mixture of socio-economic backgrounds. Some parents choose to send their kids to private Brophy Prep and Xavier Prep in downtown Phoenix, or to Seton Catholic in Chandler. Some go to Ahwatukee’s charter high school, Horizon Honors. Horizon Honors, a charter school on the southern edge of Ahwatukee, believes that all students deserve a gifted education, and it provides multiple opportunities for students to shine. St. John Bosco, a private Catholic school in Ahwatukee, serves pre-K-8. Ahwatukee has a plethora of other church-based and three Montessori schools for younger students. There is plenty for youngsters to do in “The Tuke,” as well. The Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA is state of the art and sponsors youth leagues in several sports. Phoenix Parks and Recreation provides classes and programs for kids. The Kyrene elementary schools offer Kids Club after school. Makutu’s Island and Main Event Entertainment are fun houses just across the freeway when the kids get a bit bigger. Are the kids into music? Music Makers and School of Rock call Ahwatukee home. Do they dance? Kimberly Lewis’ Dance Studio 111 in Ahwatukee not only has classes for all levels it also produces Ahwatukee’s annual holiday tradition, “The Nutcracker,” now nearly two decades strong. Do they act? Give Ahwatukee Children’s Theatre a visit. Can they hit? Ahwatukee Little League went to the Little League World Series several years back and continues to be competitive for state titles. Great schools and great activities for kids are prerequisites to great places to raise a family. Ahwatukee more than qualifies for that.

yrene School District is one of Arizona’s leading public school districts, providing excellence in education for more than 130 years. Be prepared when biking

y h t l a e South Mountain H Living By Andy Lenartz

F

rom newbies who want to give mountain biking a try to experienced riders who cannot wait to get out for their next adventure, South Mountain Park and Preserve offers superb opportunities for mountain bikers of all ages and skill levels. Granted, the area may seem intimidating at first, but it does not require bombing down an actual mountain—just that you are off the road with your tires touching dirt. GETTING STARTED 1. Access to a mountain bike. This one has a bit of a price barrier to getting started, so make sure it is something you will enjoy before investing in your own bike. Try renting a bike first or better yet, find a friend with an extra you can borrow. 2. A helmet is a must. Will come with the rental bike. 3. Water/snacks. Bring extra water, the trails here are open, dusty and hot. 4. Sunglasses will protect your eyes from sun, bugs and rocks. 5. Proper footwear. Sturdy, closed-toe athletic shoes, not flip-flops. If you enjoy the activity and want to engage on a regular basis you could spend up to $10,000 on a bike. If money doesn’t matter, by all means purchase one of those. But that is definitely not required for an enjoyable experience. Do your research on where you will likely ride on a regular basis and the type of equipment needed and share examples of the trails you are looking to ride with the bike store staff. You can get a decent new bike for $500 to $1,000, less for a used one. This will be a hard-tailed bike (will have shocks in the front, not the rear). Starting at about $1,000 you can get a full-suspension bike with rear shocks and some upgraded components, which are nice to have but not a necessity for riding the Desert Classic Trail at South Mountain and other trails of similar ability level in the Phoenix area. Avoid spending much less than $500 on a new mountain bike and make your purchase from a local bike shop or outdoor retailer. Several people that I know have purchased cheaper mountain bikes in an attempt to save money, and I’ve seen them literally fall apart the first time the bike hit a small hill and kicked a vibration through the cheap frame. The bikes sold at mass retailers are not high enough quality to withstand trail riding, so avoid wasting your money on these. You also will need to buy: • A helmet. You want to be spending at least $30-$50, considering what it’s protecting. • Floor bike tire pump. $50 will get you a solid one, could certainly spend more if you wish. • Additional tire tubes. $5-$10 each, get a couple. • Hand-held tire pump, repair kit, tire lever and bike tool. Can get for around $25 total. • Water. Consider a backpack with a water reservoir, can also hold snacks and repair items. Ahwatukee is home

to a variety of medical facilities By Alison Stanton

A

hwatukee gets so much well-deserved and positive attention for its lovely residential neighborhoods and schools, you might not immediately think of it as a place that boasts a number of outstanding medical facilities. But as newcomers to the area will soon realize, you can find just about any type of medical care that you need in Ahwatukee. If you pulled a muscle in your back while moving into your new place and it is after usual business hours, Ahwatukee has an urgent care that will be happy to see you. For more serious medical cases, Ahwatukee also is home to an emergency room. For general medical care, you can choose from a wide selection of primary care physicians, including MDs and DOs. Prefer an internist? You will find plenty of those right here. Time for your little pumpkin to get his or her shots and/or a checkup? Ahwatukee has a variety of pediatricians who can treat your little ones. For well-woman checks or if you are expecting a baby, there are a number of OB/GYNs. When it’s time for the yearly mammogram, you only need to make a short drive to an imaging center. If you need a teeth cleaning, you won’t have to drive far to find a dentist who can polish and shine those pearly whites. And if your teen’s chompers are getting a bit crooked, Ahwatukee is also home to orthodontists. The sun can be hard on the skin; fortunately, scheduling those important skin checks is easy, thanks to the many dermatologists who practice right here. And if any of the plants make you sneeze, you will find allergists to assist. For those who need help with their mental health, Ahwatukee has a number of psychologists and psychiatrists. To keep your peepers in tip top shape, schedule a checkup with a local optometrist or ophthalmologist. And if you are experiencing bad headaches or other issues, local neurologists will be able to treat you.

Ahwatukee doctor

revives old-fashioned house visits By Coty Dolores Miranda

I

n the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, a new business serving Ahwatukee has been born that couldn’t be timelier. Dr. Norbert Adame, a 20-year Ahwatukee resident, launched HouseCallsMD that does just what its name says. He makes house calls in Chandler and Ahwatukee. Adame, who graduated from Boston University School of Medicine after serving in the U.S. Army in the latter years of the Vietnam War, completed his residency in emergency medicine at Maricopa Medical Center. For the past six years, he has taught anatomy and physiology at Gateway Community College, then decided to start HouseCallsMD after determining the pandemic could have a debilitating effect on his community. “I decided to start my business after realizing that there was going to be a health care crisis as more people were losing their jobs and medical insurance coverage,” he explained. There is a need within our community to provide another venue to receive medical attention because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty that lies ahead,” Adame added. He said he was also concerned about the many seniors in Ahwatukee and Chandler and determined he could be of help to them. “As a result of the pandemic, more people, especially the elderly, are confining themselves to their homes because they cannot take the risk of getting infected—whether visiting their primary physician, clinic or emergency room,” he said. “While telemedicine and telephone calls have been a viable alternative to face-to-face time in an office, I feel that there is still a need to assess a person’s concern in person, and help them decide whether they need to seek further care

32

AHWATUKEE FOOTHILLS NEWS NEWCOMERS’ GUIDE

before their condition worsens.” Adame also said some health issues that might not require office visits can be addressed by utilizing HouseCallsMD, an independently owned business not affiliated with national companies with similar names. “There are those simple ailments that can be managed at home with the proper guidance,” he said. “Furthermore, I’ve always believed that being a member of the community means contributing in some small way that enhances the well-being of everyone.” Targeting Ahwatukee and Chandler, he said, “I’m not a company where profit drives the motivation” but rather one individual “taking small steps to hopefully make a large impact in a void created by the pandemic.” Becoming a medical doctor involved determination, years of intense study and hard work and, for Adame, a bit of serendipity as he’d entered college planning to become a teacher. He sees himself as part of “a continuum from learning medicine

to practicing medicine to teaching and now returning to the practice of medicine.” As he launches his new business, he was asked to describe his bedside manner. “In two words—compassion and empathy,” he said. “Without going into details, I’ve had first-hand experience in being a patient so I know how an apathetic expression can cause distress, and how a compassionate touch of the shoulder can provide comfort to the pain and fear.” At 65, Adame is a big believer in remaining physically active. “I started running 5Ks and half marathons at the age of 50 because I wanted to follow the same advice I was giving my patients,” he said. “And I ran my first marathon at the age of 60.” He’s also written a fiction eBook, “The Exit from My Dreams,” available on Amazon. Information: housecallsmd-ahwatukee.com. Doctor visits are $135, and payable in cash, by credit card or PayPal. He doesn’t accept Medicare or insurance plans at this time.

helps patients navigate health care By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski

A

master of traditional Chinese medicine and a licensed acupuncturist, Jamie Fitzgerald founded Desert Sage Wellness Center in 2016 with one goal in mind: to bring natural health care to the Desert Foothills community. To accomplish this, she brought together a collaborative team of wellness professionals who is able to offer patients a wide range of therapies including acupuncture, stretch therapy, nutrition, herbology moxibustion, thermography and cupping. The practitioners have faced their own health challenges and are using those experiences and education to help their patients navigate their health care. The wholistic health clinic is dedicated to the principles of treating the whole person, getting at the root

cause of illnesses, and facilitating an individual’s healing process. Patients leave feeling empowered and equipped with the information and resources necessary to take control of their health to live healthier lives. Most people know their health puzzles include diet, stress management and exercise, but they are missing out on larger pieces: inflammation, toxicities and hormone balance. The clinic’s goal is to help patients solve their own health puzzle, so they get back to enjoying their life and loved ones. Fitzgerald is the chairwoman of the Arizona State Acupuncture Board, a locally and nationally accredited practitioner of TCM and a continuing education provider for the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine and the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.

“I like to practice with the patient’s chief concerns at the forefront of their care. Often times I think it is easy as a clinician to fall into a habit of treating similar cases in similar manners, but certainly we understand that if each person is different, each case and plan of care should be different as well. I also like to have fun while I treat. This makes the experience more enjoyable for everyone involved and helps address the emotional implications associated with injury. Laughter is the best medicine!”

service with a smile

on just about anything you can imagine

W

hen you need a certain service or product, you could head to a big box retailer or national chain outside of Ahwatukee. Or you could find exactly what you need right here, at a locally owned business. Mom-and-pop businesses remain the lifeblood of the village, supported by a community that embraces the concept of “shop local.” The village now even has a funeral home and an addictiontreatment facility. It’s a community of entrepreneurs, both brick-and-mortar and home-based businesses. When your air conditioner goes on the fritz, for example, you could call one of the big companies that advertise on television and they will come out and take a look. Or you could instead call any number of familyowned, Ahwatukee-based firms that may just be able to get to you more quickly and possibly get your system back up and running for less. When you’re ready to sell your house, dozens of Ahwatukee Realtors are ready to help, and they specialize in the local market. If you find yourself in need of a skilled lawyer, Ahwatukee law firms are easy to find. Maybe you’re a romantic. You’re so overjoyed with your relationship that you want to express it with the gift of flowers. Or perhaps even an edible arrangement. You won’t have any problem finding florists in “The Tuke.” Whatever you do, don’t drive without insurance. And make sure your homeowners policy is up to date in case a monsoon takes a toll on your home. There is an agent in just about every strip center. Comprehensive medical, chiropractic and dental services are also available throughout Ahwatukee. Whether you need a dentist to do an extraction or a chiropractor to provide you some relief from back pain, you’ll find just the services you need. What happens when you are rushing out the door to have your nails done at one of the many fine nail salons in “The Tuke,” and your garage door won’t open? Electrical problem? Or have you popped a spring? Before you pop something else, call an Ahwatukee expert to repair the thing. Is it tires for your car? There are about a dozen places that can handle that for you. And what in the name of Randall Presley is up with that water that comes out of the faucet? It is so hard, but otherwise safe and fine for drinking. Maybe it’s time for a softener or reverse-osmosis system. There are guys in Ahwatukee that do that. Among home-based businesses, Ahwatukee has everything from dog walkers to bakeries. For those who truly are newcomers to the community, consider joining local Facebook pages that provide great information and sometimes even some humorous insight into our Ahwatukee community. Whatever it is, you’ll likely never be told it’s none of your business. In Ahwatukee, services that keep the community’s economy vibrant are everybody’s business.

Lasting Impressions’

interactive showroom is invaluable By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski

t Lasting Impressions, the staff knows customers have a choice when it comes to window and door companies. One thing to keep in mind: More than 80% of Lasting Impressions’ business comes from repeat or referral business. “We take great pride in taking care of our customers and treat them like family,” said owner Mark Jacobson. “During the past 20-plus years, we’ve completed over 8,500 customer projects. Our knowledgeable and customer service-oriented staff, as well as our interactive showroom, have proven to be invaluable to the homeowner, remodeling specialist and contractors.” Lasting Impressions carries quality products such as Andersen windows and doors, Milgard windows and doors, Velux skylights, Therma Tru fiberglass entry and patio door systems, TruStile interior doors and Emtek hardware. Its 5,000-square-foot showroom at 44th Street and Thomas Road is the real showpiece. It boasts built-in doors and windows that customers can operate, so they can feel how they work. “Each of the offices in the back hallway— we call it the ‘door hall of fame’—show a different type of door and hardware,” he said. “Customers can operate them and see them installed with different trim and hardware finish options, as opposed to just looking at a picture.” TRENDS Jacobson said the last five years customers have been leaning toward large doors. The showroom has five types on display as well as stacking, bifolding and a large pocket door. “Ahwatukee is one of the main areas that enjoys them,” Jacobson said. “But we’ve done it all over the Valley. They blow out the back of the house and put in a large stacking door. Bring the outside in! “What you’re doing is creating a living space for family and friends and entertaining. You are really increasing 42

the living space of the house but utilizing the outdoor patio and rear yard. The homeowner is looking for a more open floor concept and a modern style versus traditional.” As far as the new trends for interior doors, shaker style and barn doors have increased in popularity over the last few years. The store has many styles to choose from and a large selection of hardware on display. WIDE RANGE OF QUALITY PRODUCTS Lasting Impressions is a full-service millwork shop, from “hardware to skylights—and everything in between,” Jacobson said. Its products and services include: • Replacement windows and doors • New construction windows and doors • Large Multi-slide, Bi-folding, and Pocket doors • Entry, French and patio doors • Barn doors, tracks, and hardware • Interior doors, trim and baseboards • Velux skylights and sun tunnels • Security doors and retractable screens As a family-owned company with an outstanding reputation, clients can trust that Lasting Impressions will deliver the superior customer service they should expect. The company will be around long after the job is completed to ensure satisfaction. “We have established a window company with a difference, offering high-quality products with professional in-house installation at a competitive price,” he said. TWO DECADES Lasting Impressions is celebrating its 21st year in the family. Jacobson’s brother, Brian, and his partner purchased the company more than two decades ago from another local family. Brian Jacobson lost his battle with cancer four years ago. Brian and Mark were raised in Upstate New York in the baseball mecca of Cooperstown by parents who were

clothing shop owners. “Since 1907, our family’s been in retail,” he said. “My sister had a large coffee shop in Albany and Cooperstown. My brother and I had bars, restaurants, and we had an interior/exterior painting company. “We’ve been around business, clients and customers for a long time.” The Jacobsons’ 93-year-old father, Richard, still works daily in his real estate office in California. He rides his bike 7 miles up and down the coastline every Sunday. “He’s the last sole proprietor real estate office in San Diego County. He has a staff of three people and doesn’t plan to retire any time soon.” Back in the day, Richard owned The Smart Shop, a set of three ladies clothing stores, and his wife, Joan, provided fashion shows poolside at a hotel in the 1950 and ’60s. “My grandfather and grandmother started the stores in 1907 and ran them through the war back in those days,” Mark said. “They ran it from Easter until January 1, when they went to Florida. On the way back, they’d travel through New York City and pick up the new styles and trends for their customers.” They traveled with customer requests on 3x5 cards. When they swung through New York City, they tried to fulfill these requests. In the late 1960s, Richard founded The Village Squire, which sold jeans, jean jackets and other casual clothing. “He had tweed jackets for men, dingo boots, Levi jackets and the townspeople thought he was crazy,” he said. “He was told, ‘Who’s going to wear those blue jeans?’ Today, that is the trend. He built his business on casual wear, instead of formal wear. This was a small town. He didn’t want to compete with Clark’s Formal shop across the street.” Jacobson honed his customer service skills and experience at his family businesses and through his father. He learned how important each customer is to the success of their business.

AHWATUKEE FOOTHILLS NEWS NEWCOMERS’ GUIDE

on the Town By Alison Stanton

W

hen hunger strikes and you need a break from cooking, here is some great news: you don’t have to leave Ahwatukee and drive to Scottsdale, Tempe or even Chandler for some amazing food. Ahwatukee has grown from a place where a good dinner was at least a 15-minute drive away to a place where people across the Valley now come to eat, where even the prim and proper can’t help but join The Clean Plate Club. Its restaurant scene is diverse and exciting. Best of all, Ahwatukee residents will never experience a shortage of culinary choices. Long gone are the days when the best inTukee choice was McDonald’s or Taco Bell. So, what are you in the mood for? Well, let’s see. How about Italian? There’s Bell’ Italia Pizzeria, Va Bene, Trattoria D’Amico, Caffe Boa, Arrivederci Trattoria and now La Stalla, for starters. You won’t go wrong with any of them. Rather have sushi? Try Sakana, Sushi Ken, RA, Sakura, Gin Ban, or one of the newer places, Sushi Nakano, which is getting rave reviews. It’s small but it might be the best of them all, so if you want a table, get there before sundown. They’re all splendid practitioners of the art. Maybe it’s Thai that you’re hungry for. Taste of Thai and Thai Basil are sure to please. Feeling like Chinese? Come visit Mr. Chao’s Asian Bistro, Great Wok or Green Tea Bistro. The Valley has long been the envy of the nation with its authentic Mexican cuisine and Ahwatukee features some fabulous choices. The best Mexican places often are the small mom-and-pops, where ordering is done at the counter or over the phone. Los Taquitos and Burrito Company are just two of the familyowned gems that dot the village landscape. And fast-food spot Papa Chevos is right in that must-dine mix, too. Ahwatukee is not just a good place to enjoy dinner. The Nosh Cafe, Biscuits, Hillside Spot (also open for lunch and dinner) and the relative

newcomer, EarlyBaker, are fine places to start the day. For a fuller menu, try getting a table at Snooze. It’s worth the wait, especially when seasonal temperature now favor a spot on the patio. There are many other small, locally owned gems, including Pomegranate Café, with its vegan and gluten-free offerings; Star of India, where chicken tikka masala is the real star, and Ezekiel’s, a relaxed establishment where as good as the fried chicken, catfish and soul-food entrees are, the side dishes steal the show; and the Melting Pot, an upscale fondue chain restaurant with an impressive wine list (bring your wallet). Ahwatukee is also home to many fabulous pizza joints and to be fair, you should give them all a shot. Each pizza place has its own special pizza, crust or sauce, and they all deserve a taste. And if at the end of the day you still have a little energy left , wrap the evening on the patio of My Wine Cellar or The Living Room, or give the newbie, The Whining Pig, a try. By the time you get there after a fi ne dinner-night out in Ahwatukee, you might well be a whining pig yourself. Unsnap the drawers, order a bev and call it a day. As you can see, it might still be a bit south of Scottsdale in more ways than one, but “The Tuke” now holds its own against anyplace else in the Valley as a dining destination. Bon appetit and cheers, Ahwatukee.

The communities

within the community make Ahwatukee great By Alison Stanton

A

s someone who is new to Ahwatukee, you might be wondering how you can get to know your new town. One great way to become familiar with Ahwatukee is to check out all that it has to offer—including meeting others who also live here and share some of your interests and hobbies. As it turns out, you don’t have to look far to find ways to connect with Ahwatukee and the many people who call it home. A good place to start is comedy. There are no brick-andmortar comedy clubs in “The Tuke,” but there are comedy clubs that give periodic performances in Ahwatukee venues. Find one and go yuk it up. Maybe boxing is a good escape after the week you just had. Put on the gloves and have at it. If you’re into it, there’s very likely a community of people in the village who also are into it. There are mom’s clubs and women’s clubs. Gays and singles have groups they can join. For writers and book readers, join the conversation. Maybe you just enjoy a good lunch. Other people in Ahwatukee do, too, and there are many places where groups meet to eat. Let’s say that politics is your thing. The donkeys and elephants both have Ahwatukee-based organizations where you can go commiserate about the opposite animal’s doings in various legislative bodies. Maybe that will even spur you to run for office. Before you do, it might be wise to join Toastmasters International in Ahwatukee to brush up on your public speaking. Ready to try to make change? Get involved with your HOA, the largest being Ahwatukee Board of Management and Mountain Park Ranch. Just be ready to referee whether a home’s paint color is correct for the neighborhood, if the owner needs to address weeds in the front yard, or whether it’s OK to leave a portable basketball hoop up in the driveway overnight. Being on an HOA gives you a chance to meet your neighbors and have a say so in what goes on right where you live. If your interest is business and you are adept at networking, or if you’d like to learn to be more adept at networking, join the Ahwatukee Chamber of Commerce. It’s likely to be a mutually beneficial experience. Arizona is such a beautiful state and at least half of the year there is no better place for outdoor activities. Ahwatukee is onboard, with running, hiking, camping and bicycling clubs. As you ponder your new home, draw a deep breath, look at the mountains and decide where you want to play golf or pickleball today. Groups in “The Tuke” make that easy. There are a wealth and variety of communities within the community that make Ahwatukee a place where people want to live.

Realtor Steve Werner

loves his job—and people By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski

S

teve Werner and his family live in the community of Mountain Park Ranch in Ahwatukee, where they have resided since 2012. “We love being close to South Mountain and enjoy everything Ahwatukee has to offer with a great central location, fantastic schools and wonderful dining and shopping conveniences all around,” Werner said. Ahwatukee has its own small-town feel with big-town conveniences and there is just something special about it, he said. Werner enjoys the Arizona sun with his wife, Abby, and children, Elliott, 6, and Wren, 3.

“I love to hit the trails of South Mountain by mountain biking or hiking a couple times a week,” he said. “My most favorite hobby is riding my dirt bike in the beautiful Arizona desert. My 6-year-old son, Elliott, even rides! “My daughter, Wren, I think is going to ride someday, too, as she hops on her big brother’s PW50 in the garage all the time. Until then, she is getting better on her balance bike and loves anything pink.” With Abby, he loves spending quality time on lunch dates, date nights or quick getaways to places like Sedona. Born and raised in Scottsdale, Werner has been a Realtor in the Valley since 2001. He’s part of a real estate family who has nearly 100 years

of combined experience. “It is a passion of mine to help people buy or sell their home with less stress and more excitement,” he said. “I enjoy helping people achieve their real estate goals.” Being an agent who is ranked in the top 7% in Arizona, Werner said that is a true testament to how he values his clients. He is dedicated to serving them. “This is how I provide opportunities for my family,” he said. “If I let you down, I let my family down, and that is just not an option for me. Life is about people. Real estate is about people. This is why I love to do what I do!”

Faith

A community

rich in faith By Alison Stanton

A

hwatukee’s reputation as a community that is rich in faith began back in 1980, when the late Rev. Don Schneider became pastor of the area’s first church, Mountain View Lutheran. He made it a launching pad of sorts for several other churches in the community, including Corpus Christi Catholic Church, by extending the use of its premises to their fledging congregations. As Ahwatukee historian Martin Gibson told the Ahwatukee Foothills News, “As other religions’ parishes sprang up, Mountain View’s doors were open to Baptists, Catholics, Episcopalians—all had a place of worship during their parishes’ infancies, thanks to the generosity of the church. Mountain View Lutheran Church was instrumental in fostering a sense of community in Ahwatukee.” Ahwatukee also is home to the Rev. Deborah Hutterer, who in September 2018 was installed as the sixth bishop of the Grand Canyon Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. She is responsible for overseeing 89 congregations serving 44,000 members spread across Arizona, southern Nevada and St. George, Utah. Another local notable is architect Steve Bardusan, who has designed more than 80 churches across the Phoenix metro area, including Mountain Park Community Church. Forced out of its first church by the South Mountain Freeway, the Mountain Park Community congregation in 2017 moved into its new church on 48th Street south of Chandler Boulevard. Just up the street from Mountain Park, the Parish of St. Benedict—one of Ahwatukee’s two Catholic Churches—has plans to build a new church on its campus.
