C

OVID-19 is impacting everything. Playa Vista has turned into a bit of a ghost town as people are trying to observe the Safer At Home order. Some of Runway’s restaurants are still open for take-out and delivery; please order from them and other local restaurants. The Resort & The CenterPointe Club are closed to visitors and all parks are closed to group and passive activities, but people can still walk or jog through them. Dogs are being walked, but there are few children in sight. Most kids are at home with their parents, engaging in a new adventure called distance learning. Playa Vista Mom’s Group President, Amanda Goldman, shared some of her concerns with me about keeping her children safe during all this. Over the phone she told me she’s scared to let her kids go outside because they are too young to understand social distancing. Homeschooling them has been a separate, daunting challenge. But like other local moms and dads, she’s trying her best to be parent, protector and school teacher 24/7. Playa Vista resident Patti Londre is working with her quilting group, Quilt from the Heart, to sew face masks and deliver them to local hospitals, Meals on Wheels, and the LAPD. Amin Amersi, owner of Hollyway Cleaners in Playa Vista, agreed to wash and press the large piles of fabric for free, to help the quilters get the masks out quickly. Thank you, Amin! Local restauranteur Gaby Maaloouf, owner of Baja Catch & Grill and Gaby’s Mediterranean restaurants, is trying hard not to lay off any workers. He’s interviewed in this issue and I hope everyone will take-out some of his amazing fish tacos. As we struggle to navigate this pandemic, I hope we can all stay home as much as possible, continue to wash our hands, wear our masks, and hug our loved ones tight. We are strong family units. We are scientific thinkers. We are kind to others. We will get through this.

PLAYA VISTA POKER PARTY @ SPRY SOCIETY

Playa Vista Events sponsored the Playa Vista Poker Party on Saturday, February 29, to benefit the Culver Palms chapter of Meals on Wheels, a free meal delivery service for anyone who’s homebound. The event was hosted by a Marylin Monroe impersonator, with wine, snacks and, of course, Texas Holdem poker. Meals on Wheels board member Bonnie Keady started as a driver for the organization and says she was surprised by how valuable the service is to the community. “We do a wellness check to make sure they’re okay when we deliver the meals, and if we did not exist, they could not stay in their home because they’re disabled. They can’t cook or shop. That’s what I didn’t get originally.” While some chapters around the country do get state funding, the Culver Palms Meals on Wheels is run entirely on donations, so I’m happy to report the event raised nearly $8k. — Shanee Edwards

FUNDRAISER TO BENEFIT FIREFIGHTER WITH ALS @ GULP On February 29, a chilly Saturday night, local watering hole Gulp offered drink specials to help raise money for Stevens Nation, a fund to help Eric Stevens, an L.A. City firefighter and former NFL player, who was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) at the age of 29. Though Stevens was unable to attend the event due to his illness, the local community of residents and firefighters from Playa Vista’s own Station 67 not only purchased drinks, but filled a fireman’s work boot with cash to help find a cure for the disease. Stevens, who played football for the Rams for a year before following in his brothers’ footsteps to become a firefighter, recently married his college sweetheart, Amanda. Eric and Amanda, their friends, family and fellow firefighters are all on a mission to fight ALS. Visit stevensnation.com to find out more or donate. Another fundraiser will be held at Gulp in the near future. — Shanee Edwards 12 PLAYA VISTA DIRECT | APRIL · MAY 2020

Owner Gaby Maalouf also owns the local chain of Gaby’s Mediterranean restaurants

A Fresh Take on Fresh Fish Baja Catch & Grill brings Mexican seafood fusion to Playa Vista STORY BY LAWRENCE YEE | PHOTOS BY ZSUSI STEINER

When restauranteur Gaby Maalouf wanted to branch out from his eponymous Mediterranean restaurants, he knew exactly what cuisine he wanted to tackle next. “I’ve always been a fan of Baja-style seafood,” Maalouf explained. “Baja-style seafood” is typically the street food you would find on the Mexican peninsula, from Tijuana all the way down to Cabo San Lucas. The cuisine’s mainstay is fish tacos with either deep-fried or sautéed white-fleshed fish, shredded cabbage, and a white sauce. No cheese. Maalouf ’s fascination with Baja cuisine began decades earlier when he was working as a filmmaker, often filming south of the border. “We did a lot of movies down there,” he reminisced. “We had to feed crews of 50, 60 people. I also learned about the fishing harbors.” Working with expert chefs, Maalouf relaunched Gaby’s Express as Baja Catch & Grill with a seafood-focused menu. The interior got a refresh too; 16 PLAYA VISTA DIRECT | APRIL · MAY 2020

swaths of blue give a cool, Baja vibe. The change has been embraced by the Playa Vista community. “They know food,” Maalouf said. “They come in to sample the ceviche and return for a full order.” Ceviche is one of the many fresh seafood options on the menu. It comes in fish, shrimp, crab and the special la tia (“The aunt”) version. Maalouf ’s personal favorite is the seafood cocktail. In addition to the traditional shrimp cocktail, patrons can order octopus, clam, abalone, trophon, scallops and campechana. One of the most luxe items on the menu is the piedra cocktail with generous amounts of oysters and shrimp, which Maalouf jokes will have you feeling like “a rock” (the translation of piedra). Baja Catch & Grill also features standard tacos and burritos (Maalouf recommends the fiesta vegetarian burrito made with grilled zucchini). But fresh caught and grilled fish is the name of the game — literally. Options for sea-

food — sourced from Mexico/Ensenada and Alaska — include salmon, mahi mahi, cod, swai, catfish, tilapia and snapper. The fish tacos are addictive, made with crispy fish that’s tender inside. Instead of rice and beans, opt for the grilled zucchini and sweet potato fries. Add a little sweetness with one of three colorful aguas frescas. Plans to offer beer are in the works. But it’s the freshness of the food that Maalouf wants to drive home. “Every cuisine has fish and meat and tomatoes,” he explained. “With this venture, we’re thinking about the freshness and the quality of the food.” Baja Catch & Grill is currently open for take-out. Baja Catch & Grill is located at 12219 West Jefferson next to Starbucks, just east of Centinela. Visit meetmeatbaja.com to order online or call (424) 253-8129.

PET SAFETY DURING CORONAVIRUS

Q&A with Veterinarian Dr. J.J. Rawlinson of Annenberg PetSpace BY SHANEE EDWARDS

M

aintaining our own health and that of our family during the COVID-19 pandemic (also known as the coronavirus) is of paramount importance. But what if you consider your dog as a family member? Here in Playa Vista many of us consider our four-legged friends our fur babies, and in this uncertain time, we want to keep them safe, too. We reached out to veterinarian, Dr. J.J. Rawlinson, Senior Manager, Community Partnerships and Welfare Initiatives at the Wallis Annenberg PetSpace, for her expert advice.

your recovery.

1. Is it possible for my dog to get COVID-19 virus?

You should call your veterinarian first so that the vet and their staff will triage your dog’s needs with you. There are many creative ways (e.g. mobile house-call veterinary teams, telemedicine) of getting your dog the care they need without you having to go to the hospital and can maintain the recommended distance from others.

At this time, there is no evidence that dogs or cats can get the COVID-19 virus. There is a type of coronavirus that dogs get that causes an intestinal disease, but the viruses are unrelated. 2. If I get COVID-19 from an infected person or the community, is my healthy dog okay to stay at home with me? If you are ill with COVID-19, it is recommended that someone else care for your pet. Though there is no evidence that pets can become ill with this virus, it is out of an abundance of caution to find an alternate person to care for your pet so that you can focus entirely on 18 PLAYA VISTA DIRECT | APRIL APRIL·- MAY MAY2020 2020

3. What precautions should I take for my dog in terms of food and supplies if I get COVID-19? There is no indication that there will be a shortage of human or dog food. Just like for yourself, the general recommendation for pets is you should have enough food and medication on hand for two weeks. 4. If I get COVID-19 and my dog needs to go to the veterinarian, what should I do?

5. Both my dog and I are currently healthy, is it safe to go to the dog park? If you’re healthy, continue going for on-leash walks with your dog. Try to take them in lightly occupied areas with plenty of space to practice social distancing. 6. Is it safe to have a dog-walking service walk my dog?

Two happy and healthy huskies at the Bluff Creek Dog Park last fall

Be sure to follow the latest guidelines of the Safer-At-Home order, but as long as it is permitted by local officials then yes. Those who provide commercial dog-walking services should make sure that both owner and dog are healthy, to maintain distance at the hand-off and wash their hands thoroughly between and after outings. The Annenberg PetSpace is temporarily closed to the public, but you can check their website for updates (annenbergpetspace.org). If you’d like to help animals in need in Los Angeles or foster a pet, contact LA Animal Services (laanimalservices. com) or Los Angeles County Animal Care & Control (animalcare. lacounty.gov) for more info.
