orldwide heartache over Ukraine and COVID-19 continues. Meanwhile, “Consider This” is here to amuse and occasionally generate some indignation. “Hi, Jim? I’m calling because I haven’t been put on the director’s schedule to go out with a crew for a couple of weeks… Is everything OK?” “You better come in.” Uh-oh. I wonder if that feeling of being called to the principal’s office will ever leave me. (Nope.) Let me back up and give you some context for my directing career. I have had, and continue to have, a career full of both amazements and WTF moments. On camera, I was a quick-on-my-feet star of a short-lived hidden camera show called “Anything for Money.” I had the opportunity to turn my naughty, prankster nature into gold by being an on-the-street actor, setting unsuspecting people up with actions that ranged from having them floss my teeth to taking care of my pet tarantula while I went to an interview. Hilarity ensued. I was adept at subtly turning people toward the hidden camera and having them speak clearly into my hidden microphone. I was also slick about shutting my mouth and ensuring that what they said was more important than anything I said. The show was a lot of fun and was canceled too soon. When I hit 35, my sell-by date as an on-camera person, I transitioned to behind the camera. There were few female directors in the late ’80s-early ’90s, but I became one of them, and I was good at it. I walk into the Fox Network’s “Totally Hidden Video” production office, and Jim tells me to close the door. I sit. I have a massive lump in my throat. I’m internally running the Kentucky Derby in my head. Some horses in the “I’d done something wrong” race are: I’d blown a shoot; a male crew member was friendly to my face but complained about me behind my back; someone was rankled about working for a female director. “What’s up, Jim?” “Stephen upstairs doesn’t like you.” “I have never met Stephen. Why doesn’t he like me?” “You don’t get enough jiggle.” “Huh?” “You know, tits and ass.” “Now I really don’t know what you’re talking about.” “Between shots, you don’t record women’s butts and chests, so we can use them for interstitials between bits.” “The other directors do that?” “Yes.” “Did I miss a memo? Were they told to?” “No, we don’t have to tell them. They just do it.” I’m never invited to have a beer or golf with the other directors, who are — no surprise — all white and probably heterosexual men. Now I start to understand why. I am speechless. I had no idea there was an unspoken agreement to surreptitiously record unconsenting and unsuspecting women’s orchestra and balconies. If I’d been directed to do that, I would have refused. Or at least, I like to think I would have refused. I probably would have done something smart-ass instead, like shooting dogs’ butts and chests. I liked my supervising producer and intuited that he was uncomfortable, but apparently not enough to stand up for me, even though I was highly competent. I had directed theater. I had hours of experience as a performer in the genre they hired me for. I was so proud. So excited. So well compensated. And it was a significant step forward for me. I had, and still have, a strong ethic of bringing other women up. I made a point of getting female production assistants when I picked the PAs that would go with me on shoots. I had them look through the cam-

era; shadow me, if you will. If the “boys” wouldn’t invite me to socialize with them, I would pass on what I knew to the young women on set. I was determined to use my opportunity and privilege to bring other marginalized people with me. I wish I’d had the guts to go “upstairs” to the Suit Suite and confront the executive. However, then as today, the drive to keep one’s head down, be a “team player,” and not be branded as a bitch was extremely strong. Once a woman gets painted with the broad bitch brush, she’s doomed. As it was, I psychologically limped home and wept, then went into a deep depression. I wish I’d gotten angry. I wish I’d made a scene. I wish I’d done something more, shall we say, “directorial”? And now, it is with a mixture of joy, grief and pride that I see women insisting on female crew members and that there are more and more women directing. I know what the phrase “I could have been a contender” means at a deep level. As it stood, my dream job and a breakthrough for all women was nipped prematurely in the bud because I didn’t understand the Boys’ Club. I didn’t participate in a practice that I found repugnant and still do. Jiggle, my ass! Which they could kiss. ignitaries and philanthropists raised money for the 120-year-old Sycamores during its 12th annual Celebrating Children Spring Gala on March 26 at Vibiana in Downtown Los Angeles. The 310 guests sipped cocktails in Vibiana’s Garden Courtyard, before enjoying dinner in the main hall, and a musical performance by Davis Gaines, Broadway actor and Los Angeles’ longest-running “Phantom of the Opera.” After a two-year hiatus, the gala — hosted by multi-Emmy Award-winning journalist Peter Daut — allowed friends and supporters of Sycamores to gather and celebrate in person again. The program was filled with inspiring stories and testimonials, including heartfelt videos of current and former clients. Board Chair John Drinker introduced the heart of the event — the presentation of the Celebrating Children Award to Sen. Anthony J. Portantino and Capital Group. “Both Sen. Anthony Portantino and Capital Group have gone above and beyond in their service to Sycamores and exemplify the ideals and values of integrity, leadership and commitment to improving the lives of children, young adults and families,” Drinker said. Former Sycamores board Chair Renée LaBran introduced and presented the award to Portantino. A longtime friend of Sycamores, Portantino prioritizes public education, mental health and gun control. He has authored legislation that pushed back school start time for middle and high schools, banned the open carry of handguns on Main Street California, raised the purchase age of firearms to 21, and placed the suicide hotline number on student identification cards. Capital Group has supported Sycamores as a philanthropic partner for more than a decade. In addition to providing annual grants, in 2020, Capital also supported Sycamores with a special grant to fund unmet financial needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the past few years, Capital associates have established a mental health community within the company and worked closely with Sycamores for education and training sessions. Sycamores President and CEO Debra Manners presented the award to Sycamores board Member Brad Freer on behalf of Capital Group. “Both Sen. Portantino and Capital Group truly embody the spirit of the Celebrating Children Award,” Manners said. “We were delighted to be able to demonstrate our gratitude for all they do to support children and families in Southern California and beyond, with the presentation of the awards.” The event raised approximately $520,000 to support the work Sycamores is doing to address the mental health needs of low-income children, young adults and families — including those who are in foster care or are experiencing homelessness, which have escalated dramatically over the last two years.

he Pasadena community is mourning the loss of ArtCenter alumna and former staff member Sally Kubly. Raised in Pasadena and Playa Del Rey, Sally attended ArtCenter when the school was on Seventh Street in the MacArthur Park neighborhood of Downtown Los Angeles. She graduated from the advertising program in 1948. During her time at the college, she met and married fellow student Don Kubly. The two moved to Philadelphia, where she worked as the assistant art editor of Ladies Home Journal, Kubly returned to California in the early 1960s with her husband and joined the Pasadena Art Alliance, a philanthropic organization that supports ArtCenter. Don, who died in 2011, served as ArtCenter president from 1969 to 1985. Sally served as art director for numerous ArtCenter publications between 1975 and 1981, including a catalog that won a New York Art Directors’ Award. The ArtCenter catalogs, now called viewbooks, are made for prospective students and showcase the work of ArtCenter students as well as provide key information about the college. The couple had a profound impact on ArtCenter’s physical presence as they orchestrated the construction of the school’s Hillside Campus, according to Robert Dirig, the ArtCenter director of archives and special collections. “At that point, ArtCenter was still on Third Street in Los Angeles and was quickly outgrowing its space,” Dirig said. “We were admitting more students, so the idea was that we needed to move to a new campus.” After scouting locations in and around Pasadena, the Kublys purchased the land now known as the Hillside Campus and commissioned Craig Ellwood Associates, the firm that designed their Pasadena home in the ’60s, to design ArtCenter. The Hillside Campus opened in 1976 and was named a local historic landmark in 2005. “It was a big project, and it was within budget, which was something Don was adamant about,” Dirig explained. “It became a big part of Pasadena and a part of their legacy. It’s what people think of ArtCenter today, this iconic bridge and the way it was made for ArtCenter and ArtCenter students. We have architecture students from other schools that contact us to find out more information about that building and the construction of it, so it goes beyond just our own little ArtCenter community.” Sally was also known for the Kubly Family Endowed Scholarship, which has supported at least one student each year from any discipline since 2009. “She was just incredibly gracious, kind, humble and down to earth,” Dirig said. “She was really one of the nicest people I’ve ever met and was clearly proud of her work.”

Housing advocates hope to have rent control on midterm ballot By Andrew Crowley Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

Pasadena Tenants Union organizer and member Ryan Bell speaks at a press conference on Monday, March 26, at Pasadena City Hall held after the delivery of 15,352 signatures. Bell was one of many organizers who helped gather signatures to get a charter amendment on the ballot for the election this November. The amendment would control the cost of rent and offer tenants more robust protections.

Jane Panangden, an organizer and member of the Pasadena Tenants Union, speaks at a press conference held Monday, March 26. M

arch 26 was a historic moment for advocates of tenant justice and rent control. A group of local organizations, including the Pasadena Tenants Union, turned in 15,352 signatures in support of a charter amendment that would provide rent control and protection for tenants. The organizers are expected to receive official confirmation no later than May 10. Of the 15,352 signatures gathered, 13,366 will need to be validated by the Los Angeles County clerk in order for the amendment to qualify for the November 2022 election ballot. Rent control would limit rent increases to 75% of the annual increase of the Consumer Price Index. Landlords would only be able to evict for “just causes” such as breach of contract and nonpayment of rent. Tenants will also be protected should their landlord decide to no longer offer it for rent or reclaim it. The amendment would also prevent landlords from evicting tenants for the purpose of renovating a property and charging a higher rent. The charter would also establish a rental housing board to carry out the new requirements created by the amendment. Ryan Bell, a member and organizer with Pasadena Tenants Union, said the struggle for rent control goes back at least 20 years, but the process to get rent control as a ballot initiative goes back roughly five years. “The Tenants Union was founded in 2017, and it was sort of the first major project of the Tenants Union,” Bell said. The creation of the Pasadena Tenants Union came not long after the founding of the Los Angeles Tenants Union in 2017. “There was a rise of tenant unionism happening in the region, and we’ve seen it now across the country,” Bell said. Because it is a charter amendment, Bell said the campaign required the signatures of 15% of registered voters in Pasadena. Ordinances only require 10% of registered voters. Ordinances can be altered by the city council or repealed. A charter amendment would require another vote. “Once (rent control measures) are passed, you almost always have to immediately defend them against the landlord lobby — which has a large influence on most city councils — immediately watering it down or even eliminating it,” Bell said. That was something that Jane Panangaden said the policy committee debated. “At the end of the day, we decided we didn’t want to put in all this work and just it be eroded, so we decided to aim high and go for the charter amendment,” Panagaden said. Panangaden has been organizing with the Pasadena Tenants Union for the last four years. Panandaden, a Ph.D. candidate at Caltech studying mathematics, was surprised by the difference in renter protections between where she had previously resided and Pasadena. “When I arrived here and tried to find a place to live, it was kind of a shocker to see how difficult the situation was for tenants,” Panagaden said. She said that when crafting the charter amendment, they had to consider various state laws concerning rent, as these laws would supersede provisions they may have wished to have in the charter amendment. Panagaden said they looked at every city in California with rent control to help in crafting the amendment. “In general, we wanted to create the strongest possible protections for tenants while still being robust to legal challenges, so we wanted to make sure there was precedent for what we were doing,” Panangaden said. She said they spoke to residents of Pasadena about their needs and proposed possible solutions for that. In turn, those ideas were presented to legal experts who gave them feedback on what was feasible under existing laws. Initially, the plan was to have the charter amendment for consideration on the November 2020 ballot, but the pandemic complicated matters for the group. “COVID-19 really did limit us in that way. You might say that we waited this long because of COVID-19, but then COVID-19 also really amplified what was already true: the precarity of housing for working-class folks, not just in Pasadena,

On Monday, March 26, a coalition of advocates for rent control and tenant rights dropped off 13 boxes containing the signatures of 15,352 registered voters in Pasadena who support putting a rent control charter amendment on the ballot for the November 2022 election.

At least 13,366 of the signatures must be verified before the charter amendment is officially verfied by the LA County clerk’s office for inclusion on the ballot. Organizers expect to receive official word no later than May 10.

but all over the country,” Bell said. “That type of clarity really sunk in for a wider percentage of the population, people who had never thought of themselves as housing insecure lost jobs and so forth during the pandemic and were suddenly faced with not being able to pay their rent.” Bell said it was important for them to capitalize on this moment and that people had been asking for it, petitioning the city council for assistance. Bell said they anticipated a response from landlord advocate groups once the charter amendment is officially confirmed for the midterm ballot. He said they were familiar with the type of tactics used against other rent control campaigns. “We’re just going to stay in touch with our electorate, communicate the truth, a positive message about how this is going to impact people’s lives for the better and refute the misinformation that often comes from these opposition groups,” Bell said. One possible response may be a counter-ballot measure, something that Panangaden said was done in Santa Ana. “It’s possible their tactics are shifting in the last couple of years. In 2018, I was 100% sure we would face a legal challenge. Now I’m not sure what they’ll decide to do. They might try to get their own charter amendment on the ballot to strike it down. They might find that to be more efficient than a legal challenge. We’ll have to see,” Panangaden said. When reached for comment on the matter, the California Apartment Association responded via email, “This poorly drafted measure would do nothing to solve the affordable housing challenges facing Pasadena. Instead of helping build the affordable housing that Pasadena families need, this measure would create an unnecessary bureaucracy that costs Pasadena taxpayers millions of dollars each year. It also would give an unelected commission, with little accountability, significant control over our tax dollars. California already has renter protections that are more robust than the flawed proposal being floated for the Pasadena ballot. Voters in Burbank rejected a similar measure in 2020, and we’re confident that Pasadena voters will do likewise when they learn about the extreme costs.” For more information about the Pasadena Tenants Union, visit pasadenatenantjustice.org.

Live Love Create Events helps infuse Asian traditions into Western weddings. 10 PASADENA WEEKLY | 04.07.22

JoeKim Studio/Submitted

By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive Editor

A

s an Asian American, Christine Chang knows well the challenges of planning a wedding with an ethnic twist. “Growing up in the States, we teeter between Asian and American culture,” said Chang, of South Park. “We don’t know where to put our tradition — even for your special day like a wedding. “How do you honor both traditions? They already know their American culture. They live in it. With the Asian culture, we’re not familiar with it.” She founded Live Love Create Events to help infuse Asian traditions into Western weddings. Her team is all Asian American. “I have different team members with different backgrounds, and we help and service couples of color get married with unique cultures in mind,” she said. “We are a full planning service. Our specialty is bringing in that Asian tradition into Western ceremonies, if needed. Western ceremonies are beautiful in itself. But we’re learning as much as we can to bring Asian cultures to life on a wedding day.” Chang learned about her Korean heritage through friends and family, reading and visiting China and Korea. “It’s a learning process, but we’re confident about what we know so far,” she said. A popular way of adding family traditions to weddings is through the Paebaek Ceremony, a traditional tea ceremony held during the cocktail hour. “The tea ceremony is not about the bride and groom,” she said. “It’s the entire family. When the family comes together, it’s about the bride and groom, ‘Here we are as a couple. Please accept us into his or her family.’ “The elders accept the tea, give words of wisdom and gifts, usually in gold or money.”

Free ceremonies Founded in 2009, Live Love Create Events has been Chang’s full-time job since mid-2017. Previously an event director for multiple LA venues, Chang also married and had a child during that time, so the company had a slow start. “I was ready to start working when the pandemic hit,” she said. “I think this, with conviction, it was a blessing in disguise. I got to see my son for the first year. I gave him my full attention, as I was out of a job. “It’s coming around now. I feel really lucky that events are starting to pick up again.” Chang had an office in Koreatown before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Forced to close due to wedding cancellations, Chang felt for those couples. She offered free weddings for those who had to reschedule. “I was open to those who needed advice and had conversations with a lot of them who didn’t know where to start or restart their planning,” Chang said. “I was taking any phone call to try to help as many people as I could. I’m still very open to it.” For Chang, Live Love Create Events is very much a family affair. Her mother, Grace Chang, painted the background for the tea ceremony. “My mom is a traditional Korean folk artist,” she said. “She helped me make the decorations on the table out of Korean paper clay. I didn’t know too much about the ceremony because I wasn’t born there. It was nice to learn from my mom. “She’s technically retired, but she’s willing to show her art. She inspired me. I wouldn’t have been interested in any of this if I hadn’t seen her work and dedication to bringing the Korean arts culture to the States 30-plus years ago. This has been a great journey.”

hen Ed and Margaret Tom were ready to start a family years ago, they were debating between buying a home in Beverly Hills, where Ed worked at the time, or San Marino. “I first came to San Marino when I was 12 years old, and our neighbor brought us to The Huntington Library,” Ed said. “I fell in love with San Marino and thought it would be great if one day I could live there. Margaret used to be a teacher, and when she and I were debating between Beverly Hills and San Marino, we decided to go with San Marino because it is ranked among the top public school districts in Southern California. Education is very important to us, and we wanted the best schools for our children.” During a vacation to Louisiana, Ed and Margaret spent time in New Orleans and Shreveport, where they admired the beautiful Southern Colonial homes. Knowing there were only a few of those types of homes in San Marino, they spent two years searching until they found the right house. “We didn’t want a cookie-cutter home,” Ed said. “When this house became available in 1996, we knew it was our house. We can walk to The Huntington Library from here, and it’s quite magical.” Built in 1928, the home’s entryway features a characteristic colonnade extending across the front with elegant Corinthian columns. It has an expansive front lawn with tall elm trees and a brick path that leads up to the red front door. Like traditional Colonial homes, the multipaned windows are symmetrically placed across the front of the home. “What’s interesting about this home is that the exterior is Southern Colonial, but in the back, where a previous owner added onto the house, it looks more like a Cape Cod-style house,” Ed pointed out. “The elm trees in front of our house change colors throughout the seasons, so even though we live in Southern California, it gives off that East Coast feeling.” The home, which is just under 3,200 square feet, has a spacious interior that includes a formal living room where the Toms love to entertain guests. Among the living room’s centerpieces are a piano that was a gift from Margaret’s father and a fireplace made from 17th century marble that was imported from France. The living room is a special place because it is decorated with items from various countries the couple has traveled to. “I caught the travel bug when I was 20,” Ed said. “I’ve traveled all over Europe and Asia. Margaret and I are avid travelers, and every time we go somewhere, we bring home a souvenir. My favorite part of the house is our living room. We have different items on display that remind us of our travels including a tapestry from

France, a pewter tea set from Malaysia, and a cup and saucer from China that are from the Ming Dynasty. Whenever we invite friends over, I love to sit with them in the living room while enjoying a nice glass of wine and looking at the collection of souvenirs from all our travels. It’s a happy place for me.” Another interesting item on display is an autographed hat that was a gift from the late Michael Jackson. “This is his classic hat that he wore in his music videos for ‘Billie Jean’ and ‘Beat It,’” Ed said. “He had several of these hats made for his close friends. It’s very sentimental and special.” Ed and Margaret have kept the home’s exterior the same, but over the years they have remodeled rooms, including the kitchen and bathrooms. They were previously featured on Home & Garden Show’s “Designer’s Challenge,” where three designers pitched ideas to them to transform one of their bathrooms. When they hired a designer to decorate their house, they worked together to combine the traditional aspects of a Southern Colonial home with a modern look. Their home was also highlighted in Vivid Magazine, a luxury lifestyle publication in the United States for modern Chinese Americans. “Our designer wanted our input, so we were very involved in the decorating process,” Ed said. “Because we live in a Southern Colonial, we wanted to maintain the home’s traditional appearance while mixing in some modern design. In the living room we have a commissioned modern painting that blends in very well with the souvenirs from our travels. We have classic French Louis XIV chairs and a more modern couch, yet it all matches. I would describe our home as The Ritz-Carlton meets Four Seasons. It’s very contemporary but at the same time comfortable and matches the classic Southern Colonial style.” The kitchen was remodeled in 2003 and is one of the rooms in the home where Margaret enjoys spending a lot of her time. Upon walking into the kitchen, the first thing that guests always notice is the oversized island counter, which measures approximately 6 feet wide by 20 feet long. “The average kitchen island is typically 3 by 6 feet,” Ed said. “We didn’t originally want a big island, because we thought it would take over the kitchen. Our designer insisted on it and said that we would thank her later, and she was right. When our kids were growing up, they would do their homework there while Margaret was cooking. It’s great for entertaining, especially during the holidays, because there’s plenty of space for all of the food and drinks, and it’s a fun place where everyone can gather together.” Christmas is Ed and Margaret’s favorite time of the year, and they enjoy decorating their home to make it festive for their family and guests. “I love that I get to use my creative energy to decorate not just the inside of the house but the outside as well,” Ed said. “At the encouragement of my sister, last year we entered the local Christmas lighting contest and came in third place, which was a lot of fun. Christmas is a very magical time in our household. Some of my favorite memories in this home are spending hours decorating, then watching our kids open their presents on Christmas morning. That’s something we’ll always remember.” The backyard features the same Corinthian columns as the front of the house, and includes a swimming pool and spacious sitting area where the Toms often entertain guests during the warmer months. Ed and Margaret are also actively involved in the local community. Ed, who is senior vice president at UBS Financial Services in Pasadena, is the director of the San Marino City Club and has been involved with the San Marino Historical Society for the past 10 years. Margaret is a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway and was PTA vice president when their two sons were in school. Even after their sons graduated from USC, Margaret continues to be involved with the school district. “One thing that drew us to San Marino is that it’s a small community that is very involved,” Ed said. “There are only about 4,000 homes here and people always joke about how San Marino is like the Mayberry, and that’s how we feel about it. Los Angeles is a big cosmopolitan city, but we love how San Marino is tight-knit and everyone knows each other. We love being actively involved in the community. To us, that’s what life is all about.” Now married for almost 30 years, Ed and Margaret enjoy carving time out of their work and social schedules to relax and enjoy peaceful weekends at home with family. “Margaret and I are very busy people, so we appreciate the quietness of our neighborhood,” Ed said. “We can hear the birds sing in the privacy of our garden. When we’re at home on the weekends, we enjoy being in our private paradise that is our home.”

Since 1996, Margaret and Ed Tom have lived in their Southern Colonial home, which is walking distance to The Huntington Library.

The Toms’ living room reflects their travels to various countries by displaying items such as a tapestry from France and a cup and saucer from China’s Ming Dynasty.

The kitchen was remodeled in 2003 and is one of Margaret Tom’s favorite rooms in the whole house. 04.07.22 | PASADENA WEEKLY 13

Julie Christensen returns to support her Kevin Gordon album By Bliss Bowen Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

14 PASADENA WEEKLY | 04.07.22

Former Leonard Cohen backup singer Julie Christensen returns to Coffee Gallery Backstage with Rick Shea and a full band to celebrate her new Kevin Gordon tribute album, “11 From Kevin.” New Mexico, where she’s reunited with a swing band mate from her early-career jazz days. They’re working on a jazz album — “kind of a ‘Julie With Strings’ concept,” she said with a chuckle. “It’s a completely different left turn from what I’ve been doing. But I’ve been writing lyrics and we’re going to use a tune I wrote with Wendy Waldman when I had a record deal back in 1990.” But she worries about younger artists. “Musicians are still getting paid what I used to get paid in the late ’70s for a gig. It’s so sad. We’re going lose music if we don’t support musicians.”

Julie Christensen and Rick Shea WHEN: 7 p.m. Sunday, April 10 WHERE: Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N. Lake Avenue, Altadena COST: $25; reservations required INFO: 626-798-6236, stonecupid.com, rickshea.com, coffeegallery.com

y mid-April 2020, former Angeleno Julie Christensen could see that the pandemic was going to last for some time, keeping millions of people working from home and artists off the road. “I wanted to make something with my compadres,” the veteran singer-songwriter recalled, but she hadn’t been writing much. At the same time, she had been listening a lot to Nashville pal Kevin Gordon’s 2015 album “Long Gone Time,” and thinking that “somebody like Kacey Musgraves or Brandi Carlile, somebody who could bring attention to it,” should do a whole record of songs by Gordon, a critics’ favorite whose reverent reviews and staunchly loyal following have not translated into mainstream recognition. From such streams of consciousness are heartfelt albums made. In January, Christensen released “11 From Kevin: Songs of Kevin Gordon,” a collection of 12 Gordon songs she wanted to “get inside of.” (“Heart’s Not in It” and “Down to the Well” are joined in a steel-washed medley, thus the titular reference to 11 tracks). She’ll be performing a set of those songs in addition to a her own material with her band — local country-rock guitarist (and show opener) Rick Shea, bassist Greg Boaz, drummer Steve Mugalian and guitarist/accordionist Stephen Patt — Sunday night at the Coffee Gallery Backstage. While talking from her home in New Mexico about how she’s started making song videos with found pieces of film, Christensen has a sudden memory flash. “The Coffee Gallery was the first time I played my guitar and sang (at the same time) in public. Yeah. I’m just realizing that. And it was with (Linda Ronstadt sideman) Kenny Edwards. And it went OK,” she said. “He just said, ‘You just hold down the fort and I’ll do the fun stuff. If you wait till you’re ready, you’ll never do it.’” At that point in time, the Iowa native was best known as a singer with a powerfully expressive vocal instrument; she was still establishing herself as a singer-songwriter and hadn’t yet made friends with her guitar. She’d been a staple of the ’80s LA roots-punk scene that also produced X, the Blasters and the Gun Club. Back then, she shared lead vocals with then-husband Chris Desjardins as they fronted the Divine Horsemen (who played their first show in 34 years at Zebulon last Tuesday, a triumphant celebration of their 2021 album “Hot Rise of an Ice Cream Phoenix”). After that band imploded, she circled the globe singing backup with Leonard Cohen; in 1996, after settling in Ojai, she released her first solo album, “Love Is Driving.” Since then, she’s released half a dozen albums and become a stalwart champion of fellow independent artists and songwriters. Songs by the likes of Gordon, Darren Bradbury, Tim Easton, Dan Montgomery, Jeff Turmes and Amelia White remain staples of her live shows. She had already revved up Gordon’s “Saint on a Chain” for her 2016 release “The Cardinal” before she hatched the idea of making “11 From Kevin.” “I revere Bonnie Raitt and Joe Ely and people who have done that: brought their friends to the fore, friends whose voice may be an acquired taste or whose style is something that isn’t as accessible as some things,” she noted. Her world-weary reading of “Jimmy Reed Is the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” nods to musical influences shared with Gordon, while “Joey and Clara,” “Crowville” and “Gatling Gun” movingly nod to more personal connections. Gordon may have been writing about places he’d known in his native Louisiana, but Christensen felt like she recognized them, too. “I felt a kinship with being a small-town person,” she said. “People wave at you and they don’t even know who you are. … “I’ve never worked so hard on promoting a record because I believe in it so much. I felt like it would have an audience.” The maddening conundrum in the creative life is that promotion — that thing independent artists need to do to earn a living — costs money. So, while recording the songs in a Nashville barn and performing them onstage have brought real joy, it’s been challenging to make people aware of the music. “For independent artists, especially during the pandemic, when you can’t go on tour and sell T-shirts and stuff, and Spotify and every blessed platform has decimated any kind of income for musicians — the only way to get any money is touring and merch sales,” Christensen explained. “That’s just the facts.” She and actor/artist husband John Diehl recently relocated from Nashville to
