editor’s note
Reimagining Yourself
T
he start of a New Year seemed like a fine time to profile Airpark professionals engaged in some kind of reinvention. After all, the turning of the annual clock traditionally commands us to reflect on where we are, where we’re going to, and hereby resolve to make great things happen. In truth, the vast majority of the businesspeople we feature all year long are also examples of reinvention and renewal. That’s the world we live in these days, and constant change has its rutfree benefits.
When it’s time to strike out in a direction that tempts like a siren’s song, well, you either plug up the ears of your intuition or you take off anew. Regrets could lie in either direction … as could elation.

WM Phoenix Open Cleans Up with PGA Awards The Waste Management Phoenix Open was honored with four awards last month by the PGA TOUR: “Best Title Sponsor Integration,” “Best Special Event,” “Best Promotional Idea” and “Most Engaged Community” for the 2013 event at TPC Scottsdale. The “integration” nod stemmed from success in utilizing Waste Management’s expertise to completely power the event by renewable sources: solar, wind and biomass. A key to garnering “community” kudos was setting a single-day PGA TOUR attendance record of 179,022, with a total of more than half a million for the week. The 2014 Waste Management Phoenix Open, won last year by Phil Mickelson, will be Jan. 27-Feb. 2 at TPC Scottsdale.

STORIES OF 5 Re INVENTION The New Year is a time for renewal, and in this issue we feature Airpark business people reinventing their careers or refreshing their brand, whether through necessity, a consuming passion, or a desire to help others. Nearly everyone who shared their story is more than 50 years of age—and that’s likely no coincidence, as baby boomers resist the notion of retirement in favor of seeking out new and meaningful chapters of their lives. A Concept in Home Healthcare Luxury perks, great food, service with respect

he founder of Scottsdale’s new home-healthcare company knows it sounds disingenuous for a business to proclaim, “We really care!” In fact, she’s more likely than most to bristle at the hackneyed marketing claim. But there’s no getting around it. Polly Morris launched Hyde Park Home Healthcare Professionals because she cares. “People shouldn’t have to choose between quality in-home healthcare and luxury services,” says Morris, who researched the sector for two years before developing an extensive training program, and finally opening for business last summer. Make no mistake. A recent empty nester, Morris, 51, could be indulging in a leisurely “Scottsdale ladies who lunch” lifestyle. Her husband is Randy Nussbaum, managing partner of the Airpark-based law firm Nussbaum Gills & Dinner, P.C., and the couple reside in luxurious McCormick Ranch. But Morris is the kind of person who thrives on doing something that matters, and doing it as perfectly as humanly possible. “I don’t need the money. I don’t need any more clothes. I like my house,” she says of her decision to not only helm a new business, but to introduce a new concept within the industry. “I can’t just sit around. It sounds so trite, but I have to have stress in my life. I literally can’t do Polly Morris anything halfway.” hosts gourmet Morris’ zeal cooking classes brings unprecedentfor Hyde Park’s “Personal Care ed perks to home Attendants” at her healthcare clients, McCormick whether they’re lookRanch home.
ing for long- or short-term services. In addition to standard caregiver duties, staff members are trained to cook and serve great meals, perform manicures and pedicures, style hair, and be attentive to each client’s personal interests—all for only a few extra dollars per hour than what most chain providers charge, according to Morris.
Early Inspiration The seed for Hyde Park was planted when Morris studied as a social worker specializing in gerontology. (“I’ve always had an affinity for elderly people. I’m kind of old-fashioned myself,” she confesses.) Back when her kids were in grade school, Morris interned at senior-housing facilities and Hospice of the Valley while earning a master’s degree. She came away with valuable perspectives on end-of-life issues, as well as the challenges that the elderly face living on their own. “I was sent to many [high-end] assisted living homes and private homes,” she says. “In both instances, I would see substandard care, and it was for different reasons.” One of the chief observations she made, however, was inconsistency between caregiver shifts. Three assistants would be attentive and industrious, while the next might lock herself into an office to watch TV, leaving her wards to fend for themselves for hours. “Any company is only as good as its worst person,” notes Morris. As owner of Hyde Park, she resolved to hire the crème de la crème to assure her clients receive high-quality, consistent and respectful services.
Elite, Handpicked Staff It’s only three times harder to get into Harvard University than for candidates to qualify as Hyde Park “personal care assistants/PCAs,” an aboveand-beyond term Morris coined. “About 15 percent of people who interview with me make it through to being my employees,” says Morris. Although she’s a perfectionist with high expectations, Morris admits she’s been surprised by how few applicants make the cut, especially since all January 2014 Scottsdale Airpark News | 19

The next step is Hyde Park’s training in five-star services and techniques to enhance the emotional and physical wellbeing of clients. By the time Hyde Park PCAs earn their distinctive, yellow-and-navy uniform and apron, Morris feels like she knows them. “It would have been much easier if I’d opened up a home-health company like all the others, which are usually franchises,” Morris says. “Generally what they do is they have hundreds of clients and they have a pool of workers—who they may or may not know—and then they see who can go to this house or to that one.” Hyde Park, on the other hand, strives to match a client’s needs and preferences to each caregiver. The company also has incorporated a policy for PCAs needed for back-to-back shifts: caregivers’ schedules will slightly overlap so the new person can be introduced and oriented by his predecessor, someone the client already knows. As part of Hyde Park’s culinary training, Morris and her sister, a chef who hosts cooking parties in the Valley, developed a recipe book of 175 dishes. “The idea is when they come out, they will have a really good knowledge of different cooking styles and will be able to make what the person wants,” Morris explains. If a PCA gets a request for a dish and isn’t yet fully comfortable with preparation, the Hyde Park culinary instructor will go to the client’s home and supervise the caregiver in the kitchen—at no extra charge. The same goes for Hyde Park’s hair-styling services. The nonmedical home-health industry is not regulated by any government entity, and Morris cautions people to be vigilant about whom they select to provide care for their family members and to keep close tabs on performance. Hyde Park has completed all the groundwork for medical licensing and will begin providing medical care as well this month, she adds. Because the service won’t be Medicare accredited until it’s been surveyed for 12 months, patients would have to pay in full until next year. Nonmedical home care isn’t covered by regular health insurance, though long-term health insurance will pay for approved visits. Hyde Park’s rate is $28 an hour.

Morris says the hardest part of getting her business going is the misconception that home healthcare is the same no matter where you go, and that her luxury service doesn’t have the power to radically change the quality of a person’s life. “I …continues on page 22

have to redefine it, but people aren’t listening,” she says. “It’s so difficult for me to explain to people.” Prospective clients will call Hyde Park and complain about worrisome scenarios with their current home-health providers. Morris recalls a recent conversation about a woman’s mother being treated like a naughty child at a rehabilitation facility

because she wanted an extra couple of minutes to finish her ice cream bar before attending a physical therapy session. The staff made her throw the food away, then told the daughter her mother was “being difficult” when she talked of the incident. “I don’t get it,” says Morris. “These people aren’t prisoners. If it had been my staff, we would have said, ‘Of course, we’ll
be back in five minutes.’ Our job is to care and to serve. We’re not in charge of them. They are in charge of us.” Undignified treatment—plus addressing clients as “honey” or “sweetie” rather than the more formal “Mr.” and “Mrs.”— is too often the case among providers, and family members are likewise too quick to accept substandard care as a necessary evil, she adds. On a bright note, Morris has been pleasantly surprised by the generosity and encouragement of “baby boomer children” looking out for their parents. Many elderly home-care clients with considerable means balk at the extra $3 to $5 per hour for the extras that Hyde Park furnishes, possibly because they’re concerned about draining their children’s inheritance. But the kids, says Morris, see how dramatically better the service can make parents’ lives, and they often end up paying for it themselves. “I have to charge what I’m charging or I’d be losing money,” Morris says. “This isn’t the most profitable way to run this business, but my goodness, it is the best way to run this business. And I am lucky I can afford to do this and not worry about paying for rent or food. I have the luxury of being able to realize my ideal business.”

hen Donn Frye took his anniversary store decoration ideas to the city of Scottsdale, the buttons made it, but the giant zipper didn’t fly. Frye’s chain of eight Scottsdale Prestige Cleaners stores is celebrating 50 years in the Valley—the first Prestige Cleaners opened in 1964—and he wanted to decorate the buildings to mark the occasion as well as the journey into the next era. “About 18 months ago, we began working with the city on our anniversary designs featuring some new looks,” Frye says. “We came up with some out-of-sight
designs, including ‘buttons’ on pillars outside the stores to make them resemble shirt cuffs, and a big zipper on our Airpark store. They took one look at that zipper and threw up their hands.” Although Scottsdale’s strict signage regulations presented creative challenges, the city was willing to work with Frye and his vision. “It took five or six passes with changing designs, and in the end we were happy

Don Frye, Donn’s father, opened his first store after moving to Arizona from the Midwest, where he had worked in the cleaning business. The elder Frye was a fixture in the Scottsdale business scene until his death in 2012 at the age of 95. In fact, we think we were the first cleaners to offer drive-through services in our area.” The stores originally also offered home and office delivery. “We did that in the ’60s and stopped, then started it up again about three years ago because so many customers asked for it,” says Frye. The company’s focus sharpened over the years. “In the 1980s, we had stores in Tempe, Mesa and throughout the Valley,” Frye says. “We decided to concentrate on our main market—Scottsdale—which has developed ‘mini-markets’ along its northsouth corridor.”

“We have turnover in the customerservice area, but the back of our store has many long-time employees,” Frye says. For many years, the company has offered benefits including health insurance. “We also have coolers to try to make the conditions as comfortable as possible, as it can get pretty
hot with all the machinery in the summer. And we always have Popsicles and Gatorade handy,” he adds. Prestige also prides itself on providing advancement opportunities for employees. “Most of our managers started as something else,” says Frye. For example, 32 years ago, Denise Testori joined the company as an accountant, and today she is the company president. Through the years, the Frye family worked to maintain the company as a family-owned business where each store has its own personality and culture. “It’s been a challenge to maintain that culture,” Frye says. “The game has changed. If my daughters come in, there may be more differences. But one thing remains the same when it comes to the people and the practices in our stores. The cream still comes to the top.” One change his stores have seen is in the products used in cleaning clothes.

Donn Frye says eac h store has its own personality and culture.
“In about 1996, 100 percent of the industry was using the same dry cleaning product,” Frye says. “A new product came out that was better for the environment. ‘Green’ wasn’t big then, but we started it in one store and eventually transitioned to using it in all our stores. We’ve used it for 15 years now. It’s better for the clothes, the environment and for our workers. In a few years, something better may come along, and we’ll be open to that.”

Over 32 years, he’s gone from boom to bust and back again. “I started in 1980 as a real estate developer and built up a successful business,” he says. “It was wiped out in the S&L collapse at the end of the decade, and I ended up being a janitor and landscaper for buildings that I used to own.” Farnam gradually rebuilt his financial foundation, then he had to make a choice. “I had to decide whether to take a safe route and work for someone else, or to be my own boss and struggle as a contractor for residential and commercial projects,” he says. Farnam chose the struggle. “It took persistence and determination, and I finally got an opportunity to take on a big job in 2003. That allowed me to start building up my business again.” That same year, Farnam brought Michael “Dino” Miserendino into the company as senior project manager. The two had met when Miserendino was a facilities manager for one of Farnam’s customers. “We built a great relationship,” Farnam says. “Dino’s company had layoffs in 2003, and he called to give me a new

contact at the firm. On the spur of the moment I asked him to come with me.” Miserendino laughs at the memory. “I was unemployed about one hour.” Farnam points to the moment as an example of someone grabbing an opportunity when presented. “You have to seize the moment—and you have to trust,” he says. “I taught Dino the construction business, including bidding and dealing with clients. Some business owners won’t do that because they’re afraid their employee will take that knowledge and start his own company. But it turned out to be a great decision for me, because Dino helped us build the business from a half-million dollars a year in revenue to nearly $5 million.” While both men share similar roles in the company, they take advantage of each other’s expertise. “Dino’s stronger in marketing, and his contacts and networking helped us to survive,” Farnam says. The economic recession slowed their progress, but didn’t put Imagine Builders out of business. “We went through hard times, but we didn’t lay down,” Farnam says. “By then we had a good reputation with a core group of real estate brokers, architects and former customers, and that helped us get through the difficult years. cent of our business is from referrals.” A strong commitment to meeting customers’ needs has been key to their success, Farnam adds. “We genuinely care about our clients, their needs and their budgets.”
Reducing Costs for Clients Part of Imagine Builders job is educating clients. “Many customers come to us with a set of plans and specifications already drawn up for their space, and they find we can significantly reduce costs through ‘value engineering’ the project,” says Miserendino. That includes specifying materials and finishes such as flooring, plumbing and lighting fixtures that provide a great look at a reasonable cost. “Nobody says ‘The sky’s the limit’ these days,” he adds. “Our clients always look for value engineering, and the earlier we’re brought in on a project, the more we can do to control the bottom line.” Today, Imagine Builders performs tenant improveImagine Builders ments for existing buildings 8010 E. Customers include restaurants, medical offices, fitness centers, spas and salons and retail and office spaces. With just eight or nine full-time employees and a no-frills headquarters, the company focuses on productivity. That approach has paid off, Farnam says, and allows Imagine Builders to provide services at competitive prices. This year, the company is beginning another transition. “We’ve stabilized the business, and now we’re looking for opportunities for larger developments including commercial construction at the Airpark and a residential subdivision in Goodyear,” says Farnam. “We want to hold our volume at $5 million to $10 million a year in revenue while diversifying into other investments where we construct and own the buildings.”

oug Cox and Larry Barna had decades of combined aviation experience behind them, but it wasn’t until last year—both gentlemen easing into their 50s—that they partnered up to establish their own flight school, Aerodyne Flight Center at Scottsdale Airport. Laughing a little now, Barna says his and Cox’s respective sprays of gray hair give students confidence their instructors know what they’re doing in the cockpit. The duo bonded while working at a simulator training company in the Airpark, and realized their combined and diversified business backgrounds would fill a niche in the Valley’s flight-training market. Factor in insurance sales (through Scottsdale-based
One hour of training in the Redbird simulator equates to about three hours in an aircraft, a substantial savings for students, who also tend to retain more information learned in the simulator. We’re enjoying the process, and meeting a lot of good people along the way.”
Redbird Landing First things first, though, and top of mind for Aerodyne’s founders was a Redbird full-motion flight simulator. “Avionics”
have become a huge part of pilot training, and Barna and Cox knew from first-hand experience that incorporating Scottsdale’s first Redbird would help clients learn quickly, efficiently and economically. The simulator, a substantial investment for Aerodyne, was installed last January in a suite across the hall from the company’s main offices in the Air Commerce Center. Pilots training in the Redbird enjoy a slew of perks. The simulator is fully enclosed and even physically moves to mimic the roll and pitch of an “aircraft” taking off and maneuvering through the skies, providing a more realistic experience. Not only can Aerodyne exchange and install instrument panels, yokes and throttle quadrants to match

F
ormer Navy doctor and ER physician Colleen Hunsaker, D.O., was ready for an encore career in the medical field after several years as a committed stay-at-home mom in Scottsdale. Three years ago—drawn to anti-aging medicine and bio-identical hormone therapy for men and women—she opened a practice in the Airpark. “I went through all the specialties and nothing moved me like this,” she says. “I have a passion for it because people really need to know that we can reprogram our system. We can do stuff about our genes. You don’t have to accept that aging is a slow, steady decline and things like loss of memory, libido and joy for life are settling in and there is nothing you can do about it.” Working in the emergency room in Los Angeles, Hunsaker had thrived on the adrenaline of saving lives in critical situations, but as she got older, she felt like she was headed toward chronic fatigue. Plus she missed having a relationship with her ER patients, who would move to an operating room once a crisis was managed, sometimes while still unconscious. “It was almost like taking care of an anonymous person,” she says. “Now I know how many kids my patients have and what is going on in their lives.” She also gets to see the ongoing dramatic improvements in people’s everyday lives due to the personalized hormonereplacement therapies she prescribes. Most of her clients are baby boomers concerned about symptoms related to slowing hormone production—usually estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. “You have to replace everything you lose as you get older,” Hunsaker says. “If you lose your insulin production, you start taking insulin shots, but when you

ER doc reborn as anti-aging specialist lose your hormones, people get all sorts of conflicting information.” Hunsaker relies on extensive blood testing as well as patient symptoms to determine a hormone baseline for a customized prescription that is adjusted according to periodically repeated tests. The approach sounds logical enough, yet Hunsaker says many doctors fail to run more than a rudimentary blood panel, let alone do follow-up testing to fine-tune their initial assessment and hormone dosage. “In four to six weeks, we check it again and see if what I put them on is too high or too low, and we adjust it,” she says. Hunsaker has seen cases where doctors prescribed estrogen-based hormones purely on reported symptoms and then continually adjusted the level up if the
women said they were still having hot flashes, resulting in huge estrogen levels. “You would think the money for the lab test were coming out of [the doctors’] own pocket or something,” Hunsaker says. “And for thyroid and adrenal issues, it’s the same thing. They’ll do one test. I’ll do three or four in one blood draw.”
Yams & Hormones As Hunsaker’s website page on hormone function prominently states, “All Hormones of the Endocrine System are Like Instruments That Must Each Be Finely Tuned to Play the Great Symphony.” For Hunsaker, the best tuning device is bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, or BHRT, a major part of her practice. Unlike synthetic female hormones made from horse urine—which a major clinical

trial linked to complications such as strokes and heart attacks—the bio-identical versions seem to be far safer, according to proponents. Hunsaker says a base is made from yams, then modified in a laboratory to mimic the molecular structure of hormones produced in the body. No substantial studies have yet been conducted, however, on the efficacy or risks of bio-identical hormones. “The reason there is no study,” says Hunsaker, “is because pharmaceutical companies often finance clinical trials, and bioidentical hormones are natural and can’t be patented. The companies hate them because they can’t patent them and make money off them.” Hunsaker’s patients of both sexes are reporting excellent results with BHRT, which is fortunately also cheaper than using pharmaceutical hormones (roughly $30 to $50 monthly without insurance at a compounding pharmacy). An increasing number of men are getting themselves checked for low-testosterone syndrome. The condition has gotten a lot of publicity recently from pharmaceutical companies—though Hunsaker prescribes bioidentical hormone cream for low-T as well. “They’ve lost their oomph, their joy. They’re not sick, but they are sick and tired,” she says. “I do blood tests, and if the testosterone is really low, it gets replaced and there is this drastic turnaround.” In the last couple of years, Hunsaker’s practice has been attracting younger patients, “which is a really good thing, especially for women, who you want to reach in perimenopause,” she says. Estrogen alone has 400 functions in the human body, and a drop in levels can have a host of consequences, including depression, fogginess and saggy skin.
Life-Changing Results
In addition to bio-identical hormone treatment, Dr. Hunsaker works on therapies for patients with high cholesterol, adrenal fatigue, vitamin D deficiencies, and food allergies. She also offers trigger-point injections for localized medical issues such as asthma.

Jennifer Pearson of North Scottsdale visited Hunsaker to make sure her depression and fatigue weren’t hormone related. Because she was only 46, she doubted she January 2014 Scottsdale Airpark News | 33

Blood tests showed she was in full menopause. “I do estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. I am one of those people who can honestly say it changed my life,” says Pearson. “I walked in looking tired and worn out, and now I feel fabulous.’” Like everybody, Pearson still gets moody sometimes, but her attitude is better, even her skin and hair have regained their luster. “My husband says, ‘You will be on this until the day you go into the grave, honey,’” she laughs. Trishy Meary, 56, also went to Hunsaker when she was grappling with depression, hers stemming from a divorce. She discovered both her thyroid and menopauserelated hormone levels were off, and she had a vitamin D deficiency. Within a

month of therapy she began to feel better and now, two years into the medications, she believes she has dodged severe side effects of menopause, unlike some of her friends. Meary recalls one friend who lost a job because menopause made her so forgetful, and another who battled marital problems due to mood swings. “Last week, my college roommate emailed me that she had such a bad hot flash in the middle of the night, she went into the bathroom to get a cool cloth, fainted, hit her head on the toilet seat and had to get taken to the hospital for stitches,” Meary says. “I’ve avoided all those problems.”
New Frontiers The term “anti-aging” seems to be all over place these days, including in the cosmetic industry, and Hunsaker advises caution, even as she speaks with enthusiasm about the evolving medicine and discoveries in the field. “Everybody is putting ‘anti-aging’ on their shingle, so to speak, without the training,” she says. “I think we’re learning more and more, but those doctors who go
through the certification process are going to be the true anti-aging physicians.” Hunsaker herself is taking her orals in June and will be one of the few doctors in Scottsdale certified by the American Board of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine. One of the newest areas stirring excitement and controversy in the field is telomere biology. Studies have linked aging to the shortening of what is essentially the end caps—or telomeres—of chromosomes. The only way to lengthen telomeres appears to be through the activation of an enzyme called telomerase, and some doctors are advocating “cell rejuvenation” through injections of TA-65. Hunsaker is so convinced by the science, she’s working on telomere therapy with a few select patients and recently began taking the injections herself. TA-65 is just another tool in the fight to age as healthily as possible. Diet, exercise, stress management and spirituality are also part of the strategy.

riendly touch football games in the park, high school rivalries, college bowl games, Cardinals watch parties, and the big daddy of them all, the NFL Super Bowl—you can’t argue that Scottsdale has great gridiron history. Whether the game is played here or the city benefits from the proximity of play, Scottsdale always comes out a big winner during bowl season. We’ve also groomed numerous high school and community college players for the big leagues, and have welcomed former players as residents and business owners. This photo from the 1945 Scottsdale High School Camelback Yearbook shows the six-man team.

That year, Scottsdale High School fielded its first competitive team and made the first touchdown for the Scottsdale Beavers. With few high schools in the Valley at the time, the Beavers played as far away as Litchfield Park and Wickenburg. During the 1940s World War II years, Scottsdale High’s enrollment of young men was so low that the school played a six-man squad. Thanks to the post-war Baby Boom of the 1950s and 1960s, Scottsdale High’s team got back to a more robust 11 players, and Scottsdale residents turned out to cheer for additional high schools like Arcadia and Coronado.

Salad Bowl You often hear old-timers waxing poetic about their “salad years.” If they came to the Valley to play in a post-season college matchup after World War II, then they are remembering the Kiwanis Club of Phoenixsponsored Salad Bowl. Dubbed one of the top10 weirdest names for college bowl games, the Salad Bowl was held on New Year’s Day as a college football post-season game between 1948 and 1952. It continued for a few more years as a game between an assortment of teams, and benefited handicapped children in the metro Phoenix area. Since there were no professional sports teams and few major sports events in the Valley in the late 1940s/early 1950s, the Salad Bowl was a big deal. Scottsdale residents eagerly took part in the pageantry and as spectators. During its five-year run, the Salad Bowl hosted matchups like Nevada vs. North Texas State Teachers College, Drake vs. Arizona, Xavier vs. Arizona State College (ASC), Miami of Ohio vs. ASC, and Houston vs. Dayton. Legendary “Whizzer” White played his final game for Arizona State during the 1951 Salad Bowl in which Miami University beat ASC 34-21 (Whizzer died in Mesa on Aug. 1, 2013). …continues on page 38

rememberwhen ‌continued from page 36 After 1952, Salad Bowls pitted famed military teams, such as the contest between the Great Lakes Naval Training Center Bluejackets and Fort Ord Warriors on Jan. 1, 1954. There was much hype leading up to the big game, starting with a Salad Bowl queen contest. Scottsdale High School always nominated a princess, who, along with coeds from other high schools around the state, rode in convertibles along the downtown Phoenix parade route. The parade ended at Montgomery Stadium on the Phoenix Union High School campus, where the game was played. Quaintly, the Salad Bowl queen contestants and their chaperoning mothers were boarded at the nurses’ quarters at Good Samaritan Hospital, where a tea was held in their honor. Bands for the Salad Bowl Parade were quartered on the sleeping porches of dormitories at Arizona State College. Marching in the Salad Bowl Parade was an annual highlight for the SHS Beaver Band. One of the competing Salad Bowl teams always stayed at the Jokake Inn, now a historic site on the grounds of The Phoenician Resort. A Salad Bowl team used the Scottsdale High

Fighting Artichokes Too bad the Salad Bowl wasn’t around when Scottsdale Community College was established in 1969-1970. Its team, the Fighting Artichokes, would have been a natural in the Salad Bowl (groan). During 1972, and indicative of the student unrest that marked the era, SCC students expressed disapproval of the emphasis put on athletic funding, and the inadequacy of the school library and other academic programs. Students were asked to vote for a school mascot name. Although the artichoke was the overwhelming student choice, the Scottsdale Daily Progress reported in November 1972 that drovers, avengers, zebras, bikers and sunrisers also got votes. It took two and a half years for the students to prevail upon the Maricopa County Community College District governing board to approve Artichoke as the official mascot and athletic team name.
Artie Artichoke became a beloved mascot for the college’s teams; however, the school colors were changed to green and gold (from pink and white). Showing just how tough Artichokes are, SCC teams have won numerous National Junior College Athletic Association championships. The Artichoke football team recently won the Valley of the Sun Bowl, and was ranked No. 4 in the country. SCC Artichokes who have gone on to play professional football include: • Jeff Feagles, former Our Lady of Perpetual Help elementary school student and SCC football player, punted for the New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles, Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks and the New York Giants until retiring in 2010. Playing 22 seasons, he set an NFL record for most consecutive games played in a career (352). • Josh Miller played for two years as an SCC Fighting Artichoke before playing in the Canadian Football League, and in the NFL for Seattle, Pittsburgh, New England and Tennessee as a punter. The Super Bowl was first played in Arizona on Sunday, Jan. 28, 1996, at Tempe’s Sun Devil Stadium. Numerous events leading up to the game were held in Scottsdale, including the Super Bowl XXX Preview Party (at Scottsdale Fashion Square), and the Arizona Super Bowl XXX Celebrity Golf Gala (at Scottsdale Country Club, where some 180 golfers played for charity). The Pittsburgh Steelers team stayed at the Wyndham (now Doubletree) Paradise Valley Resort on Scottsdale Road, and fans stayed at resorts throughout Scottsdale. Existing January events took on a Super Bowl theme, from the Parada del Sol parade to the Art Walk. What made life truly interesting was the coinciding of the final round of the Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale with the kickoff of the game in Tempe. The Super Bowl returned to the Valley in 2008, and again, many parties and pre-game activities took place in Scottsdale—although the big game had moved to the University of Phoenix/Cardinals Stadium in Glendale. The Super Bowl returns to the Valley this time next year, playing on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015 … and Scottsdale will again reap the benefits of football frenzy. See http:// azsuperbowl.com for the play-by-play planning details.
Happy New Year!

2012, the game was renamed the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in honor of its new lead sponsor. With the game and activities in neighboring Tempe, Scottsdale resorts and businesses benefit from the influx of fans.

teams have done well in state championship games. The Saguaro Sabercats are the reining 2013 Division III state champions, adding to their state championship honors in 1995, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011. The Chaparral Firebirds were state champs in their division in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2009, 2010 and 2011. The Firebirds and Sabercats both ranked in the top-15 high school football dynasties in Arizona for the 2013-2014 season, according to maxpreps.com. Notre Dame Prep in Scottsdale won the state championship in its division in 2007 and 2008; the Horizon Huskies in 1994; the Cactus Shadows Falcons in 2006; and the Coronado Dons in 1976 (all stats according to www.aiaonline.org). Among other local high school records posted by AIA: most consecutive wins, 37, Saguaro Sabercats (2006-2009); and most points in a single game, 113, scored in a 1940 game between Scottsdale High and the Salt River Indian School. • Saguaro High grad Mike Brown played nine seasons with the Chicago Bears and ended his 10-year NFL career as a Kansas City Chief in 2009. • Jack Bush, a Paradise Valley High graduate, played nine seasons in the NFL, for Cincinnati, Arizona and San Francisco. • The Scottsdale Charros hosted the 11th annual American Airlines Golf Classic at McCormick Ranch Golf Course January 27-30, 1977. According to Phoenix Magazine, pro football stars playing in the tourney included New York Jets’ Joe Namath (who called the Classic “the greatest athlete tournament going”); Oakland Raiders’ Fred Biletnikoff; Baltimore Colts’ Bert Jones; Kansas City Chiefs’ Ed Podolak; and Cincinnati Bengals’ Ken Anderson. The tournament returned to Scottsdale in 1978 with an equally impressive list of football golfers. • The Scottsdale Quarterback Club, established in 1963, is an active sponsor of ASU, local youth athletics and community activities. The club maintains the Scottsdale Sports Hall of Fame display on the Scottsdale Stadium concourse, and provides awards and scholarships to local athletes. • After the 2007 BCS Championship Game at the University of Phoenix Stadium in 2007, the hosting Fiesta Bowl donated turf from the playing field to Saguaro High School. Former Cardinals star Kurt Warner is a motivational speaker and sought-after guest at local charitable and civic events. • Pope John Paul II held mass at the Arizona State University football stadium during his visit to Arizona on Sept. 14, 1987. Many Scottsdale residents attended the historic event. • At least two Scottsdale-area medical research organizations are working to combat the effects of concussions and other brain injuries among football players. Scottsdale-based CACTIS Foundation (a community-based institution focused on advancing the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of brain injury and disease) has partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale for the Conquering
Concussions initiative. This innovative program raises awareness about minimal Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI), a particular concern of youth sports participants. Mayo Clinic Scottsdale began working with Northern Arizona University during the Fall 2013 football season to test the feasibility of using a telemedicine robot—located on the field sidelines—to assess players with possible concussions. • Anyone remember the Arizona Outlaws? They were a Western Conference Football League team that played its 1985 season at Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe; Frank Kush was head coach. So savor the action during this month of NFL playoffs and the Super Bowl, and look forward to next season’s excitement on the gridiron … from Pop Warner, to the Super Bowl. or more than 30 years, the Maggiore family has been plating up fine Italian cuisine coast-to-coast, and now Joey Maggiore, son of Tomaso Maggiore of Phoenix’s beloved Tomaso’s, is bringing the coast to Scottsdale. With environmentally conscious seafood flown in daily and a menu inspired by the marine animal whose ink is used in traditional Italian dishes (think squid-ink pasta), Cuttlefish Ocean Kitchen offers classic and contemporary dishes with Italian influences and an emphasis on sustainability. Helming the kitchen is Executive Chef Michael Dei Maggi, who has worked with French Master Chef Serge Backes in Connecticut; Bernardin in New York City; and ZuZu Spanish restaurant in Napa. As a steward of the sea, Dei Maggi prides himself on sourcing food from the world’s best seafood purveyors. “This is a concept that my whole family has always wanted to bring to life,” said Joey Maggiore, owner of Cuttlefish Ocean Kitchen. “The Maggiores are known for our classic and loved Italian cuisine, but now with Chef Dei Maggi on our team, we’re excited to open showcasing seafood dishes with modern Italian influences. We’ve crafted a menu that simply highlights and enhances the beautiful, fresh ingredients without overcomplicating them.” The menu of coastal Italian dishes introduces a playful and fresh approach to seafood, featuring starters under the Crude e Conzate, or “Raw Undressed” portion, including Shrimp with Sicilian Lemon ($12) and California Albacore Pine ($11) smoked with radicchio, golden raisins and pink peppercorn. True to the family-style tradition of Italian
dining, large plates feature specialty dishes such as Crispy Cuttlefish ($12) in garbanzo dusted flour and lemon aioli. Cuttlefish Ocean Kitchen also offers half-priced oysters and half-priced specials on champagne and sparkling wine every Wednesday. The dining room is outfitted with natural woods, stones and metals finished with clean coastal colors. Diners
may opt to cozy up at the stunning raw bar furnished with 11 Vespa-style scooter seats. Cuttlefish serves lunch (11 a.m.-3 p.m.), dinner (11 a.m.-11 p.m.) and happy hour (3 p.m.-6 p.m.) daily; and offers late-night reverse happy hour from Wednesday through Saturday (9 p.m.-11 p.m.). Market-Linked Interest Without the Market Risk Some of the gains in exchange for none of the losses By Thomas K. Brueckner, Strategic Asset Conservation
A
s we enter 2014, last year’s aging bull market faces a myriad of problems. It’s overvalued, unnaturally subsidized by a Keynesian Fed, and the artificial quality of its earnings is being driven less by booming sales than by labor force reductions, outsourcing, automation and efficient technology, the hiring of part-time workers, and wage stagnation. Companies have bought back their own stock with money raised by issuing their own bonds, leaving them rife with cash— as well as debt. The debt bubble we are in requires the Yellen Fed to keep the QE apparatus humming because if rates were allowed to rise to the historical mean, governments, corporations, banks and individuals would be subject to tremendous stress, littering the landscape with bankruptcies, business failures and fore-
closures. The Fed is simply trying to buy time, hoping the world economy improves soon enough to prevent the inevitable. It’s a colossal gamble on a massive scale with unthinkable consequences if it fails. Individual investors face some statistical challenges too, after The Year No One Expected in 2013. Conditions last seen in early 2000 and late 2007—irrational exuberance, record levels of margin debt, and fund managers with record equity exposure—all bode poorly for those trying to convince themselves that the coming “correction” will be shallow and short-lived. Recent history bears different testimony but, as an old mentor once told me, “The only thing we learn from market history, is that investors repeatedly refuse to learn from market history,” so don’t expect the scar tissue to deter the foolhardy.

Logic, experience, and common sense should dictate that if “buy low, sell high” is the watch phrase of investing, now would be an opportune time to take some profits, and perhaps move to the sidelines. The older you are, the less tolerance you have for risk. As we often ask new prospects with both sufficient assets for a sustainable retirement and age-inappropriate risk exposure, “If you’ve already won the game, why are you still out on the field?” While most have never thought of it that way, some have a different reply, parroting the advisors who benefit from ongoing management (risk exposure) of those funds: “But we can’t afford not to be at risk, since only equities historically outpace inflation over time.” (Never mind the fact that inflation is currently at 1.2 percent and has averaged less than 2.3 percent for a decade.)
financialfundamentals Translation: No pain, no gain. Really? Guess again. A savings platform first developed by insurance companies in the mid nineties credits market-linked interest (like a CD) during years when the indices (S&P 500, DJIA, etc.) advance—while retaining such gains amid a sell-off or meltdown the following year. Fixed Index Annuities, or FIAs as they are now called, protected their owner’s account balances magnificently during both the -51 percent “tech wreck” sell-off in 2000-2002, and again during the -57 percent decline that followed the subprime mortgage and financial crisis on Wall Street. They have grown so much in popularity that even some of the brokerage firms that once maligned them have recently partnered with the companies that developed them, for the benefit of their more riskaverse clients, lest their advisors lose such clients to other firms. Employing the simplicity of timetested hedging via the use of options, FIA firms guarantee: a) their clients’ original principals, b) any bonus monies credited (in exchange for a longer enrollment), and c) each year’s market-linked interest gains against losses. Like an ever-rising tide leaving a new high-water mark, an FIA owner will only see their account value grow or hold—and only decline when they take a withdrawal. Although they’ll never again hit a market home run, they’ll hit a lot of singles, doubles and triples while never losing the retirement game. Regulators, CFPs and actuaries have long maintained that the older an investor gets, the less risk they should be taking. Getting market-linked interest of 3 percent to 9 percent—we’ve even seen credits of over 20 percent during banner years— knowing you’ll never lose those gains to another massive sell-off—makes for many a contented retiree sleeping very well at night. Whatever Janet Yellen or Europe’s central banking elite have up their economic sleeve in 2014, we all know that the reality of a stagnant world economy will eventually overtake the euphoric fantasy that was 2013. The only question is whether you’ll have protected yourself this time. Thomas K. Brueckner, CLTC, is president/CEO of Strategic Asset Conservation in Scottsdale, a conservative wealth management firm with clients in 18 states and six countries. He is a 2011 Advisor of the Year national finalist, a radio talk show host, and a mentor to other advisors nationally. He may be reached for comment at go2knight.com.

Scottsdale Healthcare Recognized for Heart Attack Treatment
T
“This is both impressive and important. It’s about saving lives and improving the quality of life for many people. I’m proud of the teamwork and dedication, and pleased to see it get this kind of recognition,” said Scottsdale Lincoln Health Network President Rhonda Forsyth. The award follows a recent site visit from Southwest Alliance for Excellence examiners who toured Scottsdale Healthcare hospitals to assess Door-toBalloon care for heart attack patients. “They learned about well-coordinated, efficient care that moves heart attack patients rapidly from the ambulance through the Emergency Department and into the cardiac cath lab to open the blocked artery,” said Cheralyn Beaudry, chief quality and patient safety officer for Scottsdale Healthcare.
he Southwest Alliance for Excellence (SWAE), formerly The Arizona Quality Alliance, has named Scottsdale Healthcare as a 2013 Showcase in Excellence Award winner for the hospitals’ heart attack care process, “Door to Balloon – 60 is the New 90.” Lowering Door to Balloon (DTB) times helps improve the timeliness of lifesaving therapy for patients with heart attacks who seek care at hospitals that perform emergency angioplasty. National guidelines target a time of 90 minutes or less from the time a patient enters the ER to receiving balloon angioplasty in a hospital’s cardiac catheterization lab. Scottsdale Healthcare was recognized for improving its performance above and beyond the national target for 100 percent of patients for the past 16 months.
Examiners heard from the entire team about how they implemented improvement methods and tools, including standard work, process mapping and process walks, key metrics of performance for each stage of patient care, and ongoing cycles of improvement, according to Beaudry. “Door-to-Balloon times of less than 90 minutes for 100 percent of patients have been sustained for 16 months now,” explained Beaudry. “This team also improved performance above and beyond the national target of less than 90 minutes to complete the DTB process in 60 minutes or less for 50 percent of cases in the past 12 months.” Awards will be presented Feb. 4 at the Chaparral Suites Resort in Scottsdale.

The latest graduates of the Scottsdale Healthcare U.S. Air Force Nurse Transition Program represented 15 states and Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
Air Force Nurses Graduate from Training Program Twenty-one active-duty new grad U.S. Air Force nurses graduated Dec. 4 from an advanced clinical training course offered through Scottsdale Healthcare’s Military Training Program. The nine-week Nurse Transition Program provides hands-on patient care experience for novice U.S. Air Force Air Force nurses at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center and Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Medical Center. Supervised by Scottsdale Healthcare preceptors, the Air Force nurses work in a variety of areas within the hospitals such as intensive care, wound care, laboratory, and areas were patients receive dialysis or are prepared for surgery. The Nurse Transition Program is designed to enhance participants’ clinical skills before reporting for duty in military medical facilities. “As you move on to your next assignment, know that the Air Force is fortunate to have nurses like you who want to go the extra mile for their patients,” said Scottsdale Healthcare Senior VP & Chief Clinical Officer Joanne Clavelle, RN, in her commencement address. “We are confident that you are leaving this program with a strong foundation of nursing skills, clinical experiences and commitment to your profession and patient care.” The graduating nurses, who represented 15 states and Ramstein Air Base Germany, will report for duty at Air Force hospitals and clinics in several states. Scottsdale Healthcare is the largest of eight Nurse Transition Program sites across the country in terms of number of participants and the facilities available for use in training. The only other civilian hospitals offering the program are University Hospital in Cincinnati and Tampa General in Florida. The Nurse Transition Program is part of Scottsdale Healthcare’s partnership with the U.S. Armed Forces. Created in 2004, the military partnership made Scottsdale Healthcare one of the first community hospitals in the United States to welcome all branches of the military for medical training.

Fast-Growing Impact Church Expanding to Airpark Pastor believes in ‘God-sized party’
T
he Scottsdale Airpark is not only home to thriving businesses but to churches as well. Impact Church, the secondfastest growing church in America, is a thriving, multiethnic community of people in the heart of North Scottsdale. Impact Church began in 1998 when the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals drafted Andre Wadsworth. Who would have thought the NFL would have sparked a new church. Wadsworth was the No. 3 overall draft pick out of Florida State and the highest draft pick ever out of FSU. When he came to Arizona, he had a desire to do more than just play football: he wanted to start a Bible study for his teammates and see them impacted for Christ. Starting with just a few families in his home, that Bible study has now become Impact Church, averaging 1,500 in attendance and recognized by Outreach magazine as one of the Top 100 Fastest Growing Churches in the country. Travis Hearn is the senior pastor of Impact with Wadsworth serving as his executive pastor. Before Impact, Hearn and his wife, Natalie, helped start and establish a church in Arizona that grew from zero to 5,000 members in just eight years. Hearn also serves as team chaplain for the Phoenix Suns and for the Oakland A’s Major League Baseball Team during Spring Training. Impact Church is an exciting place to be on Sunday. The music is rockin’, the teaching is Bible-based, and the kids programs are so fun that kids ask their parents to come back week after week. Impact keeps serving up Krispy Kreme donuts, Butterfinger lattes and a friendly atmosphere. “This church is so warm and welcoming. You can’t make it through the lobby without several people saying hi to you,” says Erin Hall, a member of Impact since 2011. The energy at Impact is contagious. From cars parked all along 83rd Way to Hayden Road, golf carts rolling through the traffic, and people everywhere who are excited about being at church, you can’t help but feel the excitement. “We believe church should be fun. In fact, we think it should be a God-sized party!” says Pastor Hearn.
Otherworldly Music And speaking of music, Impact’s music is out of this world. “One major contributing factor to our growth is providing a unique music style that we call ‘soul rock,’” Hearn says. “I knew I needed to find a singer and musician that could cross cultural lines through the art of music, fusing together different flavors

like gospel, rock, soul, R&B and even some hip-hop.” After searching all over the United States, Hearn finally found Michael Land, a soulful singer who was working as a plumber in Alaska. “The minute we heard Michael sing, we knew he was working with the wrong pipes!” says Hearn. This exponential growth has not been without its challenges. Impact’s current building, with only 45 parking spots, can’t accommodate the 1,500 people who call Impact Church home. In an effort to expand and make room for more, Impact is purchasing the former car dealership known as Cardinally Way, next to Costco in the Airpark. The 62,000-square-foot architectural plans include a 1,200-seat auditorium, a coffee and smoothie bar, a gymnasium and a Christian bookstore. “This facility will allow us to maximize our impact in Scottsdale,” says Hearn. “With a food bank and other outreach opportunities included in our plans, we will be a place where people can find hope.” For more information and updated service times, visit ImpactChurch.com or call 480-926-6752.

M
obile marketing has taken the world by storm. As more people take to their cell phones, it opens your company up to a whole new opportunity for marketing. When considering a plan for mobile marketing, there are a few things a company needs to think about. First, you need to consider whether you’re going to create an alternative version of your desktop website, and if it will be a true mobile version or one that adjusts to phone, tablet or desktop, such as a responsive website. Also, a mobile application is an option. Applications allow your company to be more proactive in your marketing allowing you to use push technology. Each of these is viable, depending on the marketing strategy
you plan to implement. Visit www.fasturtle. com on your mobile phone to see the mobile version and to download our application. With this information, you’ll be able to create more targeted content that will better resonate with users. Without analytics from an SEO program, content for social media and other sites is not as strong and effective as it could be.

Scottsdale Sells City’s Fantastic Reality By Rachel Sacco, President & CEO, Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau
“T
he reality of vacationing in Scottsdale is like a fantasy, and that fantasy can become a reality,” said Caroline Stoeckel, vice president of marketing at the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, as she described the bureau’s new 30-second TV commercial. The new commercial airing in Chicago, New York, San Francisco and throughout Canada is aimed at Scottsdale’s sophisticated leisure visitors and highlights the beauty, bliss and elegance that can be found while vacationing in Scottsdale. As we enter the time when Scottsdale’s tourism industry is at its peak and prices are at a premium, it’s easy to take for granted the work that goes year-round into creating this demand. And even during
high season, the work continues to market and sell Scottsdale as a world-class vacation and meetings destination. Due to the competitive nature of the tourism industry, the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau’s efforts help keep Scottsdale top-of-mind for travelers. In addition to the new TV commercial, the bureau is leveraging new golf research to best target potential golf customers. Plus, we’re launching high-impact marketing campaigns in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Canada to reach our best customers. In the TV commercial, a surreal vacation comes to life with vibrant colors and rich designs that invigorate the senses. The dreamlike scenes encompass the essence of

the bureau’s “Richly Sonoran” brand campaign by using locations such as Pinnacle Peak, the pool at Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North, and a scenic view of the city from J&G Steakhouse at The Phoenician. To watch the commercial, visit YouTube.com/ScottsdaleCVB.
New Golf Research The bureau also promotes Scottsdale as “The World’s Finest Golf Destination” through the ILoveScottsdaleGolf.com campaign featuring Golf Channel’s Brandel Chamblee. Our research shows that Scottsdale is a well-received golf destination by both local and out-of-state visitors. In fact, the community outperformed competitor destinations across nearly every

positive metric, including high-quality golf, great weather, fine dining and luxury accommodations. In addition, the research validated the importance of attracting golf visitors, who spend 50 percent more than the average Scottsdale visitor. Large-scale marketing efforts in our target markets this winter also are helping to ensure that our affluent customers—with the means to go anywhere—are booking their next vacation in Scottsdale. Ads wrapping subway cars, covering oversized billboards and dominating high-traffic train stations will remind customers that they can escape to Scottsdale for sunshine, relaxation and the beauty of the Sonoran Desert. With the right tools based upon our customer research, the bureau can effectively reach new customers and bring incremental business to Scottsdale year-round. JANUARY Business Horoscope By Weiss Kelly, PMAFA Whether you’re a small-business owner or have other career aspirations, insights into how the planets influence your work month can help you plan for maximum performance and project success.
ARIES 3/21-4/20 As you step into 2014, it won’t be all about you, but about them. The first half of this year, break free from past restrictions and focus on interacting more with others. This will determine how the second half leads to new professional and personal terrain. January will be fast paced, and career goals replace family/home matters. Finances will definitely need an overhaul.
LEO 7/23-8/22 In 2014, you must be patient and work behind the scenes until the summer months. Although you start out slow, all the waiting and creative effort pays off the last week in July and well into 2015! As January progresses, your finances improve. The focus is more on others than yourself, and your ability to get along with people will be an essential asset.
TAURUS 4/21-5/20 Replace that “fixity” of yours with “flexibility” this coming year. Your everyday lifestyle and involvements will be redesigned, even as the same personal and business relationships continue to challenge you. January can prove successful, providing you follow through on your goals. Just talking about them won’t be effective but taking action will.
VIRGO 8/23-9/22 The New Year starts off with a rarity: two New Moons, meaning you have double chances to go in different directions in the year ahead. Communications and social interaction are emphasized. January is productive and finds you social and ready to launch a new project or idea toward the end of the month. Others will be important to your success.
GEMINI 5/21-6/20 The New Year can bring much-needed opportunities to earn money in many ways. It will require you to put your gift of communicating to good use and sharpen your mind even further. January is ideal for letting go of emotional angst or insecurities and focusing on your outer objectives. Consult with others who are more experienced.
LIBRA 9/23-10/22 The first half of the year relates to finances and earning potential. You’ll be signing new clients and going in unexpected directions. An early theme of 2014 is scalingback plans and reducing spending. January may be hectic, but all the running around has its rewards. Take action to demonstrate your unique worth.
CANCER 6/21-7/22 Lady Luck follows you into the New Year. You still have many opportunities to enhance your quality of life—including a marriage or proposal. Take advantage of Ms. Luck’s six-month stay. January starts the year off on a social note, so expect to be out and about. Your professional life will be demanding and competitive.
SCORPIO 10/23-11/21 January starts off with a New Moon and delivers another New Moon later in the month, ensuring a number of conditions will be in your favor. You are undergoing a muchneeded “renovation.” Stay with recent challenges that continue to test your abilities, and the effort will pay off later in 2014. January’s lean toward

personal independence vs. reliance on other people requires a bit of give and take on your part. SAGITTARIUS 11/22-12/21 The New Moon on Jan. 1 brings changes that could produce more money, contacts and savvy ideas. Find out which secrets you need to keep and what needs to be shared. You have a talent for knowing what people want, and you’ll use this frequently this year. If unsure how to approach a new challenge or career opportunity this month, trust your intuition. CAPRICORN 12/22-1/21 The New Moon in your own sign on the first day of the year guarantees major professional and personal changes ahead. New people and a new kind of career await. This powerful and romantic cycle continues until July, and you can have things your own way just by taking action. Don’t ignore your emotional needs and home matters. January is a good time to launch new products and services. AQUARIUS 1/22-2/18 Get ready for a new job or business offer this year. Your greatest interests will be in relationships and intellectual matters. You’ll enjoy an expanded love life and be involved in a major undertaking later in the year. This month, you enter a time of personal independence and can create your own conditions. Joining a group of like-minded professionals is to your advantage after the 14th. PISCES 2/19-3/20 A lucky cycle that began the last half of 2013 will continue until late spring. Concentrate all your efforts into working in cohesion with others and pooling your separate resources. You can safely deemphasize home or family matters for the time being. Put yourself out there by getting involved with groups and organizations.

I
t’s a New Year, so when it comes to your video content resolution I say, “It’s time to lube up!” That’s right! Video is the new social lubricant that is going to give you broader influence over your core demographic. Like any good escapade, you can develop a flawless plan, but if the timing is not just right, you will fail. Believe it or not, content marketing is the biggest threat to content marketing. So before you start roaring your engine, let's do a quick tuneup of your video content strategy.
CONTEXT IS QUEEN! If you’ve done your homework on content marketing, then you’ve come across the infamous “CONTENT IS KING” phrase. Forget that! If content is king then CONTEXT IS QUEEN and we all know women dominate (I like to, at least)! VIDEO VIXEN TIP: Yes, quality content is key but that’s not going to get you far if it’s not relevant to where your customer is in the sales funnel. Put your role-playing hat on and get a feel for your customer’s needs and wants at every phase. That’s the content you need to be producing.
CONFIDENCE Who wants to get in bed with a business that doesn’t have authority? (Not me!) There’s no one that understands your prospects better than you. So take charge and deploy content that will get your audience viewing you as an influencer. VIDEO VIXEN TIP: Video is ideal for eliciting the emotion you need to convert. Use your passion to get the rise you need from your audience. If you know they
should care about something and clearly display why, then they will.
THE ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL NO NO You can’t be a one-hit wonder when it comes to content marketing. You’ve got to be your prospect’s partner that consistently shows up in order to nurture a long-lasting relationship with them. This means building dynamic experiences across each of the platforms they consume content. VIDEO VIXEN TIP: Yes, how you tell your story is just as important as the story you choose to tell, but (listen closely!) you must also understand where your story is being told. We are now multiplatform viewers; consuming content across desktops, mobile devices and connected TVs. Those are important elements to factor into your content strategy.
LEARN MORE ABOUT MULTIPLATFORM STRATEGIES Successful influencers, who ultimately close deals, know how to use video as their social lubricant to increase available audience (prospects). Video can and will increase your blog readership, email lists and social following. So, what are you waiting for?
