T

his was supposed to be our third annual “Glorious Green” issue, celebrating the beauty of ecofriendly products and services offered in the Airpark. Alas, I couldn’t find anything new about green providers to write about, unless it was closures. A quick Google check revealed that the previously featured organic babyclothes shop, and the fabulous green furniture and accessory store (where I bought the purse made of pop-tabs that I am constantly complimented on) are no longer around, and I’m sure they aren’t the only casualties of an economy where pennies often outweigh a commitment to renewable resources. Sure, Scottsdale Unified School District is investing in solar energy—and already seeing savings—but the schools didn’t use a local contractor. And we already published a story on Airpark-based Green Choice’s Solar ’s project at the Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus. A few new building projects, including the Cactus Acres Fire Station in North Scottsdale, have won LEED honors this year, but I was on the hunt for providers vs. projects. I welcome the emails that are (hopefully) coming my way to educate me on the green offerings I overlooked. In the meantime, I had a conversation about my impressions with the man on our cover, Charles Sidi. Originally I’d contacted Chuck for a story because he’d marketed his newest invention, BizBox, as a green product with solar panels. As BizBox evolved as a business this year, though, Chuck realized that clients weren’t too interested in the green aspect of his mobile-marketing tool. I asked him if he thought the fervor for green technology has slowed. “I personally don’t think it’s much further on that it was five years ago. That’s my opinion that’s based on the economic environment we’ve been in,” responded Chuck, who has an extensive background in green building. That’s just one aspect of our cover story, by the way. Read on and see if you agree with Chuck’s position that there is no business that can’t benefit from a BizBox—including yours.

‘NYT’ Spotlights Scottsdale Quarter ‘Experience’

The New York Times spotlighted the Scottsdale Quarter in a July article examining how centers compete with online shopping. The trend is to offer dining and other experiences that can’t be duplicated on the web. Examples at the Scottsdale Quarter include Make Meaning, the Drybar, iPic and Blissful Yoga. (Tanya Gagnon, creative director of Tempo Creative and resident of the Airpark, is quoted about her experience with the Quarter.) More: http://nyti.ms/PqOKYS. continued on page 9

Is New Police Building in Airpark?

The Arizona Republic recently reported that Scottsdale taxpayers have a new $1.87 million Scottsdale Police Department’s Investigative Service Bureau building, the location of which the city has refused to disclose, citing concerns about officer safety. Based on appraisal data, however, The Republic said the building “appears” to be one in the Scottsdale Airpark near Greenway-Hayden Loop and Scottsdale Road. The newspaper also asked Jim Keeley, a Scottsdale Airpark broker with Colliers International, to review the likely structure, and he confirmed that the city got a fair price on the building in question, which is being purchased with funds from a federal program known as RICO.

CJR Holdings purchased the warehouse building at 7722 E. Gray Road in the Scottsdale Airpark for $1.6 million, or about $40 per square foot, according to CoStar.com. The 39,853-square-foot building was constructed in 1984 on 1.62 acres. Randy Shell, John Quatrini, and Suzanne Enright of Shell Commercial represented the seller, Denali National Trust. The buyer is a real estate agent with Realty USA Southwest Inc.

:: Tasty Bites :: In September, the Old Town Group will add a breakfast-oriented restaurant to its roster, replacing Jimmy Woo’s in Old Town with
The Morning Squeeze. The company’s fleet of locales includes two Airpark restaurants: Stingray Sushi (at the Scottsdale Quarter), and El Santo Restaurant + Patio Bar (in the former Jillian’s space). “Morning Squeeze was a breakfast/lunch concept we developed several years ago but put on the shelf to develop others first. It’s time. We’re going to invest a substantial amount of money to reinvent the space and open it as a fresh, vibrant, high-profile breakfast and lunch stop with terrific food, coffee bar, smoothies and brunch on the weekends,” said Old Town Group Founder and CEO Greg Donnally.

BizBox takes brands directly to the people

18 | Scottsdale Airpark News August 2012

harles Sidi’s goal is nothing short of changing the way people do business. He describes his invention, a mobile building called BizBox, as the place between the brick and the click. “The whole concept is to create mobile showrooms. Brick-and-mortar locations are fine, but that’s not what everybody wants right now,” he says. “The world has changed—we have become a very mobile world in every sense.” Since BizBox debuted in October 2011 on Scottsdale’s GreenwayHayden Loop, several high-profile brands have signed on for their own traveling “branded box.” Outfitted with glass walls, LED lighting, solarpower options, skylights, and a popout wraparound deck, the BizBox is akin to a trailer on steroids. A single person with a truck can tote the cube anywhere and transform it within 15 minutes into an office, showroom, retail store or display center. The BizBox gives businesses an opportunity to connect directly with their target audiences and give them an experience. “I think customers today want to be more interactive. They don’t want to just interact with a website. It’s boring,” says Sidi. “I look at my kids, who are teenagers, and they want to be connected to companies. They can’t just be connected by Facebook or Instagram.”

Hoops Hub

Sidi doesn’t think a business exists that couldn’t benefit from taking its services or products directly to customers with a BizBox. So far, though, clients have been limited to large companies, likely because of the concept’s newness and its substantial price tag. Units start at $80,000, with

various leasing options, such as $2,500 monthly for four years. BizBox takers include BarrettJackson, Skullcandy, and most recently, the Phoenix Suns. The NBA franchise customized its box with a replica locker room, team history wall, trophy case, and TVs for videos and gaming. Dubbed “Hoops Hub,” the Suns mobile unit is used to interact

brand, explains Jay Parry, senior vice president of brand business development. “Our goal is always to bring the excitement of Suns basketball to wherever we are, so it’s given us a new way to bring that to fans all over the community,” says Parry. “What we like about Hoops Hub is it’s a comprehensive way we can present our rich history in the Valley, and also tell the story of our exciting future as we get back to elite status on the court.” The Hoops Hub debuted on the US Airways Center pavilion June 29, with a special appearance by the team’s first-round draft pick, Kendall Marshall, who walked out to the unit after wrapping up his press conference. To create a game-like atmosphere, music and videos played from the air-conditioned Hoops Hub as fans lined up for autographs. The event was a “much more robust experience” than simply having Marshall do the signings at a table inside the center, says Parry. The Hoops Hub engine had barely cooled before its next appearance, at Tempe Town Lake on the Fourth of July. Hundreds of fans lined up throughout the night to go inside and play Xbox, as well as shoot basketballs into the NBA regulation hoop attached to the side of the unit.

Phoenix Suns

Fans gather around the “Hoops Hub” at US Airways Center for an interactive experience that included an appearance by Suns’ first-round draft pick, Kendall Marshall, who signed autographs.

“It’s just allowing us to build upon our Suns brand in a new and different way. I can’t wait to see what we’ll be doing when we’ve got 12 months under our belt,” Parry says of Hoops Hub, adding that many of the team’s sponsors/ marketing partners have shown interest in leveraging the mobile unit to elevate their own brands. Hoops Hub’s next stop is the Maricopa County Home and Garden Show, Aug. 3-5, at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Mobile World

In today’s mobile world of pop-up shops and event marketing, promoters have few choices between a tent and a semi-truck. It’s BizBox’s ability to add value to a brand that’s attracting the attention of top-notch companies looking to interact with customers, says Sidi, adding that he’s noticed an interesting cross-relationship between the mobile units and social media. “When our product goes into the marketplace, companies post photos of it on social media,” he says. “They understand that social media is part of doing business, but they still have to be interactive with their customers. That is what building a brand is all about.” BizBox’s first client, Scottsdale-based Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, purchased a unit specifically to build upon its social media efforts. The “Social

Media Hot Spot” was unveiled at the annual Scottsdale event in January and has traveled to other Barrett-Jackson auctions around the country. “Technology is the chassis of the auction business,” Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson said in a statement. “We’ve long been at the forefront of new technology, and we’re proud to add this new hot-spot for our guests.” Skullcandy, a publicly traded audio company that caters to the action-sports crowd, is touring its speaker-laden BizBox, called “Crusher,” to dozens of music and sporting events throughout the nation. The company is so pleased with the results thus far, it ordered another BizBox for Skullcandy distributors in Australia and is talking about a European model in 2013, Sidi says. In July, Cricket Wireless signed on for a BizBox to promote its new music service. The unit has speakers, and customers can plug their phones into jacks to hear tunes. “They are talking to us about more units if the test phase goes well,” says Sidi. BizBox is also meeting with outdoor equipment manufacturer Oakley and shoemaker Vans. VF Corp, owner of Vans and about 30 other brands, is particularly interested in Sidi’s next concept: BizBox villages, a 1,000-square-foot showroom environment created from three or four of the mobile units.

Once more people get to see and touch BizBox, Sidi anticipates sales will really take off. “The really great thing is it’s applicable for any business—health care, education, sports, wine tastings—it’s just endless,” says Sidi, predicting that the golf industry will be next to embrace BizBox. “Golf is all about innovation ... and [the manufacturers] do so much promotional work out in the field, they can turn it into stores, do analysis, so many things.”

Birth of BizBox

The idea for BizBox sprang from two unlikely sources: Sidi’s background developing “green” buildings and his frustration with the stalled real estate market. A native of England, Sidi moved his family to Scottsdale six years ago. “I came to Arizona to be a developer. I didn’t see any growth. I saw a retraction,” he says. “So I thought to myself, I’m not going to be a dinosaur, or moan or complain about my life. I’m going to do something about it. And I created a new industry.” Over two decades, Sidi had built more than $100 million worth of projects in Europe and the United States, and he wasn’t used to sitting still. During his “down time,” he looked for a way to explain the green-building system he’d developed to potential clients in the Valley. Touch and feel had always been the best way for him to learn, and he decided it would be “cool” to create a building with green elements that he could take to customers. “Literally as I drew the sketch back in October 2010, I thought to myself, ‘Whoa, this is interesting. This could be a showroom, an office, whatever for anybody.’ I started to think in much bigger terms of what this product was.” After obsessing and refining his mobile product for months, Sidi looked for a business partner, and found one in Rick Sikorski. “I’m more brand vision and the creative side; he brings a huge amount of business skills,” Sidi says of continues on page 24

Moosavi Design Group Architects, Inc.

R

auf Moosavi and Tara Moosavi, professional registered architects and cofounders of Moosavi Design Group Inc., a diversified architectural firm, are not only business partners, but also a happily married couple for 25 years. The two met during the fall of 1983 while they were architectural students in Tehran, Iran. They were selected randomly to be part of a design group for a project, and the rest is history! Tara and Rauf married in the summer of 1987. Since then, life has taken them to different places from Iran to Finland, to California, and finally to Arizona, where they settled almost 19 years ago. While living in California, Tara and Rauf were with large firms such as Kennard Design Group, West Pacific Architects, Naim & Associates and the Albert Group Architects. Tara was dedicated to the Metro Rails Transportation Projects, while Rauf concentrated on large commercial projects and land development. The California recession of 1991 made the future of the construction industry unknown and gave them no choice but to move to a different state with hope for a brighter future. The name Arizona came up in every conversation they had with professionals in the industry, so they decided to take a risk with a state they knew very little about. When Rauf and Tara first arrived in Scottsdale on September 1993, they fell in love with the city. Rauf was working with Kubicek Architects and Associates when he decided to realize to his dream and establish his own firm. Moosavi Design Group became a registered architectural firm in October 2001 and started working with many well-known developers in the Valley, including E.T. Wright, John Largay of Wespac, Craig Willett of UTAZ, Steven Beck of Cobe Development, Jeffery Kost of Glenwood Development and Robert Carter of Builders Guild. Moosavi Design Group relies on the success of its business on returning customers. They are confident that new clients find them through referrals. Rauf and Tara have always been committed to meeting and exceeding their clients’ expectations, and it is this dedication to quality that has made their services stand out in the architectural industry—even without any formal advertisement. Moosavi Design Group Architects Inc. is an embracing architectural practice, offering quality design and engineering consulting services that reflect a variety of projects, such as:

That’s where you can lose your momentum sometimes.” Since the age of 5, Sidi has delighted in creating and building things, his lifelong passion. While sitting around the breakfast table in 2003, for example, he and his wife invented a device that would make it easier to pour cereal, and they eventually sold the idea to Kellogg’s UK division. Sidi believes this latest endeavor is a culmination of everything he’s done in his life—design, patenting, raising capital, business development. “I think I’ve taken all that experience from 24 years and put it in BizBox. And partnering with Rick, I think it will be very successful. I saw it the first day I drew the sketch.” To other entrepreneurs and wouldbe inventors, Sidi offers the following observation: “You’ve got to have faith, not fear. If I didn’t have faith, I would have kept that drawing of BizBox in my drawer. And it would still be there now, wouldn’t it?” 

Print Is Alive Sustainability more than buzzword for Airpark printing business By Emily Soccorsy

A

irpark business owner Jackie Wszalek uses a revolutionary idea to educate her customers about her business. Print is sustainable. Print is green—and clean. “I want to dispel the rumor not to print things,” Wszalek says. “It’s pretty incredible, the idea [people] have to feel guilt and shame over printing something. It’s not true.” The friendly and enthusiastic owner and president of Despins Printing and Graphics points to the fact that printed materials are recyclable as well as created with soy-based inks and printed using recyclable components. Compare that to the large and complicated toll of computers and their ilk, says Wszalek. “The footprint of electronics is a huge drain of resources, whereas print’s footprint is minimal and renewable.” She points to the changes the printing industry has made over the last decade, since the rise of electronic communication. “Print,” she says, “is still a viable, effective way to communicate.”

The Despins Printing and Graphics team members are Angela Matos, graphic designer; Jackie Wszalek, owner and president; Susan Despins, manager; and Teri Strehlow, graphic designer.

Wszalek should know. The former construction executive purchased the longstanding, family-owned Despins Printing and Graphics in April 2009, at the height of the economic recession. “The economy just tanked. I had no clue it would go as low as it did,” she says. During that time, there was a nearly palpable sense of panic that Wszalek saw in the eyes of so many Airpark entrepreneurs. “I saw businesses dropping by the wayside,” she recalls. So Wszalek threw herself into her enterprise, building on its healthy base of business, acting as a community ambassador and continues on page 27

focusing on being a supportive owner to the employees. “I believe in just going out and meeting everyone I can possibly meet,” she says. “I consider it making new friends.” She visited a whirlwind of networking groups, outreach events and chamber get-togethers. For her, connecting with people was the goal. If she ended up doing business with them, that was a bonus. At the same time, Wszalek eliminated some of the more outdated and toxic machines. She upped the investment in digital printing and bought new equipment. She focused on recycling efforts as well. Today, everything that comes in is recycled, as is about 90 percent of the paper that leaves Despins’ doors. Wszalek brought her positive teamcentered attitude to each customer and encouraged her team to do the same. “We have a great staff, and they work well with people,” she says. The staff includes graphic designers Angela Matos and Teri Strehlow, as well as manager Susan Despins, daughter of the original owners. “Susan’s help and experience has been invaluable,” says Wszalek, who credits Despins with much of the store’s success. All the work over the last four years has paid off. Despins has a healthy ledger, working mainly with business-to-business clients, such as homeowners associations, doctor’s offices and accountants. “We’re still doing things like stationary, but most of what we do now is marketing materials,” she says. Postcards bearing QR codes have been popular as of late. Mailings are also on the rise—possibly due to the larger number of emails people receive. “Print is a great way to drive people to your website and other electronic media,” Wszalek explains. “Even if you get a mail piece, you have to touch it once to put it in the trash.” Since her initial community outreach push, Wszalek has focused on several key organizations: the National Association of Women Business Owners, the Women’s Enterprise Foundation, the Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce, and Local First Arizona. While her outreach work has no doubt helped Despins Printing and Graphics weather the storm of the recession, it also provided a way to give back to the community.

Trademark Moves Luther Law protects intellectual propertyÂ

hen Michael Spreeman started his business building custom pianos, he thought about protecting the company’s name with a trademark. But so many other things took precedence, like designing, building and marketing his pianos, not to mention all of the other things tied to launching a business. Now, eight years later, Ravenscroft Pianos is becoming widely known and protecting the brand has taken on a sense of urgency. “Now was the time to do it as we’re actually getting national and international recognition,” says Spreeman, whose business is located in the Scottsdale Airpark. “The name’s out there.” Like many business owners, Spreeman went about obtaining a trademark himself. Once he started, though, he realized the process was far more difficult than he had expected. He turned to intellectual property attorney Barb Luther for help. “It was very clear to me that this was something more complicated than just an average Joe could handle,” Spreeman says. “I was happy to have her on board. It’s one of those things that you really need an attorney for. It’s almost like a different language.” Luther happens to be fluent in intellectual property law, having practiced it for 23 years, the last seven of them in private practice in the Airpark. She helps clients with patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrecy

and strongly suggests people protect their ideas, products or services early on. “To introduce a new product, for example, you might be spending, 20, 30, $100,000 on marketing, and in that you will splash your new name,” Luther says. “Now, would it make sense to first spend about $2,000 to make sure the name is free and clear to use?” While anyone can file for protections themselves, and many do, Luther doesn’t advise it. It often winds up being a long and frustrating process for them, she says. “A lot of times they’ll come to me because the patent or trademark office kicks it back with questions,” she says. “Those offices will say you should go to an attorney. That’s important on trademarks because … you have to answer about 30 or 40 questions, many of which have a legal basis. People can easily step in it, and we have to start over for them.” For Spreeman, the important thing is having his trademark in hand. He’s worked hard to build his business and he doesn’t want anyone interfering with it. “All the logo branding that I’ve done, if they steal it from me, I won’t be able to market my piano under that specific name,” he says. “That’s why having a trademark is important.”

Kinds of Protection

Patent: An exclusive right that prevents others from making, importing, using and selling your invention. Patents protect products, methods and manufactures that someone has created. Copyright: Gives full right of ownership to the creator of an artistic work, which can be a web page, book, illustration, computer program or movie. Trademark: Protects a word, phrase, symbol or design, or a combination of words, phrases, symbols or designs, that identifies and distinguishes the source of the goods of one party from those of others. comes to me with a new method for treating patients, I learn about it from them and literature sources, and I synthesize it in my legal expertise into a patent application.” Patents are far more complicated than trademarks and take years to be approved. One reason, Luther says, is because there’s a backlog of applications. It can take a year or two before a patent examiner even looks at an application. Most of the time, patent applications are rejected because the examiner either doesn’t understand the application or isn’t clear how the invention is original. Attorneys must then rewrite and resubmit the application, which costs a client time and money. continues on page 33

Patent pending

Luther enjoys trademark cases, but her real passion is patents, specifically in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical device industries. “I love learning about and interpreting science,” she says. “When somebody

Luther Law Firm Barbara J. Luther, partner and founder 10575 N. 114th Street, Scottsdale 480-344-7745; thelutherlawfirm.com

Cost of Protection

Copyrights: The least expensive of protections. Luther charges $335 to file for a copyright certificate, which usually takes a few months to receive. Trademarks: A typical trademark costs less than $2,000. The process from filing to approval often takes less than a year. Patents: These are the most expensive and take the longest to receive. Big firms can charge $20,000 to get an application started. Luther’s firm has begun offering a low-cost way to protect property called BareBones, which she has trademarked. Fees for a provisional patent application start at $2,500. Costs can rise depending on the complexity of the invention, however.

“We have a process to get complete information from the inventor or the company in the first place,” Luther says. “We don’t have to go back and forth with multiple iterations.” She ensures that the patent office knows what is new and special about the invention she is writing about. “It’s very clear, and you don’t have to tease it out of the dry prose that many attorneys like to do,” she says. A strong application means a strong patent that is less likely to be challenged in court. Of all the patents Luther has worked on, she’s aware of only two that have been challenged. “They were both successful,” she says.

Scientific edge

Luther’s background in science gives her an edge when it comes to writing technical patent applications that are often 30 pages long. Before she went into law, Luther studied medicine and was on track to becoming a doctor. She earned a bachelor’s in medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago and completed a six-year honors program at the university’s medical school. With a young daughter, she wasn’t able to keep the round-the-clock schedule required during the last two years of med school, so she stopped. She later went back to school, this time earning an MBA at Keller Graduate School of Management and a law degree from Loyola University. “I really enjoy patent law and working with people who have a new idea and are excited about it. I’m excited too,” she says. “It’s just a lot of fun to help protect their ideas and products and companies the best I can.” And it’s exciting to watch her clients succeed, she adds. One of her former clients is a psychiatrist who invented a new way to treat patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Luther helped him

turn his invention into a pair of patent applications in the United States and other countries. The psychiatrist was able to then sell the invention to another company for $125 million. “That company did additional work and was able to sell the whole package to a major pharmaceutical company for a billion dollars,” Luther says. Hans-Leo Teulings is hoping for similar success. Teulings owns NeuroScript, a Tempebased company that is developing a software system to automatically analyze and quantify human movement. He’s in the process of applying for a patent for his new invention. “Twenty-percent of schizophrenic patients contract irreversible brain damage from overmedication or the wrong medication,” says Teulings, who has a master’s degree in biophysicis and holds a doctorate in experimental psychology. “We think we can dramatically reduce this percentage by offering an automated, non-invasive method to detect side effects based on handwriting movements.” He started the patent application process himself in 2007. When it became clear he needed an attorney, he hired Luther. “They did an excellent job at getting it filed at the last minute,” he says. “She and her team are very active. I remember they worked very late.” It’s been five years and Teulings can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel. He hopes to hear soon whether his patent has been approved. “We have high expectations that the drug companies will be interested,” he says. “It might be worth a lot, but we don’t know how much.”

Lesson Learned

Spreeman, too, is waiting to hear about his application. Fortunately, for him, he’s only had to wait three months. Once his federal trademark application is approved, he’ll start looking into international trademarks. And this time, he won’t wait to call Luther. “If you’re going to have a kidney transplant, you’re not going to go to a general physician,” he says. “You’re going to go to a specialist.”  August 2012 Scottsdale Airpark News |

In 1909, voters approved a school bond to build the Scottsdale Grammar School, which was used for years as a voting site.

n Aug. 28, we head to the polls for Arizona’s primary election, then return Tuesday, Nov. 6, for the national, state and city elections. No matter what your political leanings, Scottsdale’s election history is full of colorful candidates, contentious issues and a forward-thinking electorate that put in place the funds for some of our most significant infrastructure. Here’s some delectable election food for thought:  In 1897, Scottsdale residents voted for prohibition and formed the first Anti-Saloon League in the Arizona Territory. Many Women’s Christian Temperance Union activities were held in Scottsdale. Prohibition was enacted in Arizona in 1914, lasting until the national repeal in 1933 (repeal passed by Arizona voters in 1932).  Scottsdale founder/namesake Winfield Scott was elected to the Arizona Territorial House of Representatives in 1898.  The Scottsdale School District, formed in 1896, held its first bond election May 1, 1909. Thirteen citizens voted “yes” and zero citizens voted “no.” The bond-approved $5,000 was used to build the Scottsdale Grammar School, nicknamed “Little Red Yavapai Nation filed a lawsuit; on appeal, the Arizona Supreme Schoolhouse” and now home to the Scottsdale Historical Museum. Court ruled in their favor.  Scottsdale residents voted in favor of a $75,000 school bond  Arizona women finally got the right to vote in 1912, not at the time of statehood, (Feb. 14), but through a vote by the men issue for expansion of Scottsdale Grammar School (later renamed the following November, amending the new state’s constitution. the Loloma School; now the Scottsdale Artists School at Marshall Throughout the country, women got the right to vote when the and Second Street) July 7, 1948.  Culminating nearly four years of study, 19th amendment to the U.S. artist Wes Segner and Phil Schneider, M.D., Constitution was ratified in 1920. led a Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce com In 1922, Maricopa County mittee in circulating incorporation petitions established a voting precinct and among Scottsdale property owners during the justice court in Scottsdale, giving winter of 1951. After years of coping with floods that cut Scottsdale in half, voters in 1973 approved a bond issue to fund construction of the Indian Bend Wash.

 Scottsdale’s Town Charter was adopted by voters in 1960; it became effective in 1961, the same year Scottsdale achieved city status.  During Sen. Barry Goldwater’s candidacy for U.S. president in 1964, he held many campaign events in Scottsdale/Paradise Valley, his home. Up to that time, very little land had been set aside for city parks; however, residents involved in the Scottsdale Town Enrichment Program considered this a priority for the city. El Dorado Park was the first to be dedicated.  In 1966 voters passed a Scottsdale Civic Center $2.4 million bond issue by a 2-1 margin, after defeating it the previous year. The bondfunded Scottsdale City Hall and Public Library opened in fall 1968.  Voting age in the United States was lowered from 21 to 18 with passage of the 26th Amendment in 1971, largely spurred by student activism against the Vietnam War. The Retirement Reality Check Little things to keep in mind for life after work

While the No. 1 retirement fear is someday running out of money, your income stream may actually prove more important than your retirement nest egg. How great will the income stream be from your accumulated wealth? There’s a longstanding belief that retirees should withdraw about 4 percent of their savings annually. This “4 percent rule” became popular back in the 1990s, thanks to an influential article written by a financial advisor named Bill Bengen in the Journal of Financial Planning. While the “4 percent rule” has its followers, the respected economist William Sharpe (one of the minds behind Modern Portfolio Theory) dismissed it as simplistic and

an open door to retirement income shortfalls in a widely cited 2009 essay in the Journal of Investment Management. Volatility is pronounced in today’s financial markets, and the relative calm we knew prior to the last recession may take years to return. Because of this volatility, it is hard to imagine sticking to a hard-and-fast withdrawal rate in retirement—your annual withdrawal percentage may need to vary due to life and market factors. What will you begin doing in retirement? In the classic retirement dream, every day feels like a Saturday. Your reward for decades of work is 24/7 freedom. But might all that freedom leave you bored? Impossible, you say? It happens. Some people retire with only a vague idea of “what’s next.” After a few months or years, they find themselves in the doldrums. Shouldn’t they be doing something with all that time on their hands? A goal-oriented retirement has its virtues. Purpose leads to objectives, objectives lead to plans, and plans can impart some structure and order to your days and weeks—and that can help cure retirement listlessness. Will your spouse want to live the way that you live? Many couples retire with shared goals, but they find that their ambitions and day-to-day routines differ. Over time, this dissonance can be aggravating. A conversation or two may help you iron out potential conflicts. While your spouse’s “picture” of retirement will not simply be a mental photocopy of your own, the variance in retirement visions may surprise you.

Attention Small Business Owners! NOW is the time to BUY and REFINANCE Commercial Real Estate!

When should you (and your spouse) claim Social Security benefits? “As soon as possible” may not be the wisest answer. An analysis is needed. Talk with the financial professional you trust and run the numbers. If you can wait and apply for Social Security strategically, you might realize as much as hundreds of thousands of dollars more in benefits over your lifetimes. 

Valley TV Host Exits Lifestyle Show to Raise Money for Local Schools

A

irpark resident Andi Barness, co-host of ABC15’s Sonoran Living Live, exited the popular magazine show on June 12 to return to the labor of love she started two weeks prior to being hired in April 2010. Doozy of a Deal was the brainchild of Andi Barness and her husband, Dean, who came up with the idea after life threw them Andi Barness a curveball. Andi’s position as ABC15’s daybreak traffic reporter was eliminated, and she knew she had to find a way to save and make money in a tough economy. “I was a member of the ABC team for about four years, and then all of a sudden I was in the same boat as so many other people,” says Barness. “I knew this concept would not only help raise money for my kids’ school, but it would also help me save money while trying out and supporting local businesses with the daily deals.” Doozy of a Deal is a “deal of the day” website that prides itself on being different. Not only is it a local company,

but Doozy is a “boutique” deal site that sets itself apart by offering unique deals—the kinds of deals that subscribers won’t find on all the other sites. “Perhaps the biggest difference between Doozy and other larger national sites is our commitment to giving back to the community,” says Barness. To satisfy that desire to help their local community, Doozy's founders donate a whopping 7 ½ percent of each deal sold to a local school or nonprofit of the purchaser’s choice. To date, Doozy has given back more than $45,000 to the community.  Andi Barness started her broadcasting career in Los Angeles as a radio traffic reporter and moved to Phoenix in 1994. Her voice covered the airwaves as a radio traffic reporter for stations KEZ, KYOT, Mix 96-9, KIIS FM, and KNIX. She eventually made her way onto local TV sets as the morning traffic reporter for ABC15, and on to Sonoran Living Live. She has no immediate plans to return to local television but doesn’t rule it out.

How to Listen Your Way to Success

2

easy tips to be a better questioner

M

ost people speak at 100 to 175 words per minute, but the mind can process up to 300 words per minutes. Because of this gap, it is easy to lose attention; before you know it, you are thinking about other things. With this in mind, it is obvious the skill of active listening is crucial in both business and life. Interestingly, active listening requires effective questioning, especially open-ended By Ron J. questions, probing questions and the accomBonnstetter, Ph.D., panying skill of wait-time. Keep in mind that Target Training most people ask questions with the intent to International answer, not gain new insights—especially in a social setting. See if this sounds familiar: “What did you do this weekend?” “Oh, not much.” “Well, you won’t believe what we did!”

It is obvious one of the underlying components of active listening is focusing on others and not self. This might be the first hurdle to be tackled for some of us. Therefore the real key to active listening lies with your questioning ability, including the use of open-ended questions and probing questions.

Open-Ended Questions

A skilled questioner knows the difference between open-ended and closed questions and the massive difference in outcome. For example, “Do you enjoy watching golf on TV?” vs. “How do you feel about watching golf on TV?” In general, any question that can be answered with either a short statement or a yes or no is classified as a closed-ended question. If your goal is information and open communication, you need to learn the art of asking open-ended questions, allowing you to probe deeper into a person’s knowledge.

TOP 10 EXECUTIVE SUITES by RANKING ARIZONA!

EXECUTIVE OFFICE SUITES In a team meeting, asking “Do you agree?” does not allow team members to express their points of view. On the other hand, “Please tell us how you view this situation” does. Keep in mind an open-ended question requires more time to consider options, so allowing time for a response is necessary. This is called wait-time. Research has shown after posing a question, the average person waits less than three seconds before restating, redirecting or responding themselves. So allow think-time. Many times the more think-time, the more complex the response elicited.

Offices Available- 100 to 330 Sq. Ft. All-Inclusive Suites provide:

Probing Questions

Another type of open-ended question and a crucial component of active listening is the use of probing questions. Probing questions involve taking whatever is stated by a person and using this information to gain deeper understanding. For example: Initiating question: “Bill, how would you solve this issue?” Response: “I would get more information from the stakeholders.” Probe: “Who do you consider to be the primary stakeholders?” Notice the end of the probe sentence. Avoid the tendency to insert your agenda by tacking on a second comment, such as “Are the managers the key players?” In this case, you just inserted a yes/no question AND shut down open sharing with your personal bias. A great way to gain this skill is to practice it in a social setting. When you meet a person at the next networking or Airpark social gathering (the chamber events are a great place to practice), start with an open-ended question and then proceed to ask at least two probes (questions drawn directly from their answer) before changing the topic. Fight the urge to tell the great story that comes to mind or to share your own relevant experience. You will be surprised how much you learn. By the way, the other person will actually enjoy the conversation far more. (It’s funny how that works.) 

Four Seasons Culinary Class Teaches Kids Back-to-School Kitchen Basics

our Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North presents “Lunchbox Lessons” on Saturday of Labor Day weekend, teaching children secrets to preparing a healthy lunch and snacks just in time for the new school year. “Teaching kids kitchen fundamentals, and how to utilize fresh ingredients, builds the framework for a lifetime of healthy habits,” says Executive Chef Mel Mecinas, himself a father of two. “Plus, cultivating an interest in cooking helps inspire the next generation of young gourmets.” The class will involve hands-on instruction in the basics of kitchen safety, how to follow a recipe, and simple preparation of a variety of lunchbox favorites and healthy snacks. All participants will receive an apron, recipe book and a lunchbox, as well as lunch and snacks. Games and other “recess” activities will be available for kids during the class, including fun with rolling pins and dough, and kitchen utensil guessing games. The cost is $40 per participant. Class will be 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 1, and is geared toward children ages 5 to 12 years. Parents can extend the fun with a stay at Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale over the Labor Day weekend holiday. Scottsdale Healthcare Opens Urgent Care Center Convenient, cost-effective care for minor illnesses and injuries is backed by expertise of local hospitals

S

ometimes afterhours “owies” need urgent attention, and with the opening of Scottsdale Healthcare Urgent Care Plus, quick, convenient and cost-effective medical care is available for Northeast Valley residents. An urgent care center can be an ideal option for a minor injury or common, non-serious illness, such as upper respiratory infections, sinusitis, bronchitis, minor lacerations, earache, sore throat or sprained ankle.

Scottsdale Healthcare Urgent Care Plus is now open at 13843 N. Tatum Blvd.

Extended hours and care that is coordinated with the patient’s personal physician are two of the distinctive features of Scottsdale Healthcare Urgent Care Plus, on the northeast corner of Tatum Boulevard and Thunderbird Road. The center, which also handles workers’ compensation injuries, is supported with the same resources as Scottsdale Healthcare’s three hospitals and accepts most major insurance plans, according to Diane Legum, director of Ambulatory Services. “We’re providing convenience without compromise, and helping to better manage the cost of care. Studies show over half of visits to an emergency room are for non-emergencies, but to those patients, a minor illness or injury still requires care,” says Mufid Khoury, M.D., medical director at Scottsdale Healthcare Urgent Care Plus. Basic medical tests and radiology services are available on-site, and care is provided by board-certified physicians, licensed practical nurses, and certified radiology technologists. Because urgent care facilities are typically open during extended hours such as nights, weekends and holidays, they can be especially helpful for a family’s minor medical emergencies when their regular doctor’s office is closed. Located at 13843 N. Tatum Blvd., Scottsdale Healthcare Urgent

Solar Power: Crunching the Numbers

W

e believe that aside from the political hype, solar technology as an energy alternative is a fiscally healthy change for many businesses. Solar is a proven technology, and businesses should understand how to take advantage of the long-term energy solutions that solar can provide. When it comes to energy efficiency, reducing expenses or planning for the future, company solar is an option that should be investigated. Here are a few questions businesses should ask. R Is my building energy efficient? By Rich Endicott, Biltmore Bank R Is solar an economical solution? of Arizona R What are the advantages of becoming green? The cost of energy increases every year, and utility expenses we see on profit and loss statements are substantial. The average 2,300-square-foot household in Phoenix pays 11 cents a kilowatt for energy. Seems like pennies, but after a year, it amounts to $2,530 dollars. By comparison, a business with 25,000 to 100,000 square feet of combined office and warehouse space could be spending as much as $90,000 a year with the utility company. That’s a lot of pennies. The number of companies converting to green technology is fast becoming commonplace. In fact, the Arizona Corporation Commission requires regulated utilities to generate 15 percent of their energy from renewable resources by 2025.

An Intro

A solar cell is a device that directly converts the energy in light into electrical energy through the process of photovoltaic, or what’s commonly called solar PV. Federal, state, municipal, and city governments throughout the Southwest—as well as most of the Fortune 1,000—are converting to solar as a means to reduce utility costs. Commercial solar is most commonly installed on the roof, but more and more solar installations are being built as solar shaded parking structures. Businesses are benefiting from the energy production while providing the dual benefit of shaded parking for their clients and employees.

Fast Facts

R A typical silicon cell solar module will have a life in excess of 20 years. R Each hour of each day, more energy from the sun reaches our planet than is used by the global population in an entire year. R Historically, public utilities in Arizona have increased utility rates an average of 5 percent a year. R More than 3,500 square miles of federal land is now awaiting permits for solar power development. Tax Rebate Program Highlights

Business Energy Investment Tax Credit: This is a federal ITC of 30 percent, based on the cost of the system installed. There

R

is no cap to the amount of the ITC credit. In addition, solar qualifies for bonus depreciation as well as accelerated depreciation on 85 percent of the system cost. R Performance Based Incentive (PBI): This is a quarterly rebate paid by the public utility. The rebate is paid as a cash incentive for 20 years, based on the amount of solar energy produced. The PBI is used to help offset the cost of installing solar. R Arizona State Corporate Tax Credit: This is a state tax credit of 10 percent of the cost of the system not to exceed $25,000 per building/structure or $50,000 annually per business.

Questions to Ask

First, the business owner should meet with a qualified solar expert and have them complete comprehensive energy efficiency and cost analysis that includes: R Review of state, federal tax and cash incentives. R Utility incentives and cash rebates. R Cost-savings analysis. Second, thoroughly review the tax benefits associated with installing solar. The tax benefits, as you will see, can be significant, so take some time reviewing all the benefits of the tax and incentives offered through the public utilities. Keep in mind that SRP incentives are structured differently from APS and TEP. The utilities have very comprehensive websites to help you understand the options available. Alternatively, you can contact a solar integrator or installation company, as they have a good handle on all rebate and incentive options. Finally, evaluate financing the hard cost of installing solar. If the out-of-pocket costs to install solar combined with the cost to finance is less than the historical energy costs, then seriously consider going green. 

Rich Endicott is president of the Biltmore Bank of Arizona’s Scottsdale Airpark location, a community bank that serves Arizona businesses. More: www.biltmorebankaz.com. August 2012 Scottsdale Airpark News |

T

he forthcoming job fair in North Scottsdale on Tuesday, Aug. 21, at the Scottsdale Resort and Conference Center is primed for great success thanks to the early legwork of key national and Arizona based community groups, says Joe Galli, executive director of the North Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce.

The one-day event targets a need for the nation’s veterans, veterans’ spouses and currently enlisted military members to find employment. “This is an important event for both our employers and

veterans and their spouses in the region,” says Galli. “We are excited that many of the Valley’s employers, including a few in our backyard like Scottsdale Healthcare and JDA Software, have agreed to participate. Additionally, several state and national organizations including the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve the U.S. Department of Labor, Arizona’s Department of Economic Security, the Arizona Workforce Connection and others are organizing and promoting the event. “Our goal is to match over 100 employers with several hundred qualified job seekers,” says Galli. “Kudos to the U.S. Chamber’s Hiring Our Heroes and its partner Hero2Hired for bringing this event back to Arizona. This

veterans’ hiring event has seen great success across America since its creation over a year ago.” Interested employers must register at uschamber.com/ hiringourheroes/scottsdale-az to participate in the event, and jobseekers are encouraged to do the same. chool’s out for summer, and that spells summer vacation. While families are playing at the pool, they can still be supporting their favorite school or charity with the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess “Sleepover for a Better Tomorrow” program. In its third year, the resort’s fund raising program invites school Parent Teacher Organizations, churches and nonprofit groups to accrue income throughout the year. Each participating group receives 10 percent of every dollar that friends and families spend on a vacation at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess totaled from their overall room spend, including accommodations, dining and spa. To encourage participation in the “staycation” program, the Princess is providing an exclusive discounted rate of 20 percent off the best available room rates through December 31, 2012. Nonprofits and PTOs can register for the turnkey, no-obligation program, which disperses funds to their respective organization for books, computers, staffing and supplies. “Sleepover for a Better Tomorrow” is effortless to implement, does not require an outlay of funds from organizations and does not require tracking or detailed paperwork, as the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess handles all of the details, according to the resort. Once enrolled in the program, each organization is encouraged to communicate the offer to friends, family, parents and staff through letters, fliers and specially designed emails by Fairmont. The more people who take advantage of the program, the more money that is given back to the school or organization. Last year, the Sleepover program generated close to $10,000 for Valley schools and organizations. Any school, PTO or nonprofit organization interested in enrolling in Fairmont Scottsdale Princess’ “Sleepover for a Better Tomorrow” vacation program may contact David Scholefield at 480-585-2700 or david.scholefield@fairmont.com. The resort property is on Princess Drive between Hayden and Scottsdale roads in North Scottsdale.  More: www.fairmont.com/scp/sleepoverfortomorrow.com.

music-centric celebration will break out at the Music to My Ears Party on Saturday, Sept. 1, at The Venue of Scottsdale. The event is a concert-party combo focused on the discovery of local talent while benefiting a Valley nonprofit music organization. Yes, there will be live music (courtesy of Lea Cappelli and SCOTI*SLATE), a silent auction, food/cocktail specials and more, but perhaps the coolest part is that the event will benefit Tempe-based Ear Candy Charity, whose mission is providing youth access to music education. Advance tickets ($10) are on sale at www.ravenevents.com/musictomyears. Admission fee at the door will be $15. A percentage of the net proceeds will go to Ear Candy Charity, which will retain 100 percent of the silent auction bids and direct donations made at its exhibit. Music to My Ears signature cocktail purchases will directly benefit the charity also. The event is hosted by Raven Valdes, known for throwing networking mixers and social parties for couples and singles in Scottsdale and Phoenix. Lea Cappelli (www.leacappelli.com) will kick off the live performances with a 9 p.m. set that combines the textures of Billie Holiday with the modern-day twists of Fiona Apple. SCOTI*SLATE, featuring Scoti (lead vocals), Lars Slate (guitar) and drummer Derek Upton, is known for creating a “sexy,

soulful, and danceable” sound. They add a distinctive twist to the cover songs they select, complementing their original music. “Ear Candy Charity is a nonprofit organization that provides many ways in which young people can have the opportunity to learn about and enjoy music as an art form, a subject that is disappearing in our educational programs,” says Raven Valdes. “This event is about paying homage to and discovering talented local musicians, which in a way, is what Ear Candy Charity is all about. We are happy to help the public learn about this wonderful charity and how it is spreading the love of music in our community.” Ear Candy Charity is a Tempe-based nonprofit dedicated to fulfilling its mission of providing youth access to music education. Ear Candy impacts youth through three programs: Online Instrument Drives (a web-based service to place donated instruments in low-income music programs); Play it Forward (‘Instrument Drive in a Box’ service learning program for community groups); and BackStage Class (enlightening music based field trips). {10 Tips}

for Summer Job Search Success

S

ummer is no time to abandon a job search. Many job seekers and career changers make the mistake of halting all their efforts during the so-called “vacation months.” They believe there is no point in pursuing new opportunities during the summer because nobody is making hiring decisions until the fall. Ford R. Myers, career coach, speaker and author of Get The Job You Want, Even When No One’s Hiring, (John Wiley & Sons, www. getthejobbook.com) says, “Summer is no time for job seekers to be trading in their business suits for swimsuits or their briefcases for beach bags. Summer is the perfect time for career advancement.” Myers offers the following 10 tips to help job seekers stave off the summer “brain drain” and focus on career success:

who are at work during the heat of the summer will not only be available for conversation but will be grateful just to speak to someone.

1. Create and Control Your Internet Image. Whether it’s LinkedIn, YouTube or Facebook, every professional should have an online presence. Many employers research job candidates on the Internet before making hiring decisions.

“If you are currently in career transition, these strategies should give you a fresh perspective on a summer job search. Instead of ‘taking a vacation’ from your career development activities, take full advantage of this overlooked opportunity to make real progress in your career quest,” says Myers. 

2. Invest in Career - Coaching. It might seem that career coaching would be a luxury in this difficult economic climate. Actually, this could be the best time to get some career coaching. A qualified career coach can help you get totally clear on your objective, differentiate yourself from the competition, market yourself effectively, get the offer, and negotiate the best compensation.

9. It Is Better to Give Than to Receive. The fastest and most effective strategy for getting help is to offer help to others. Ask the people in your network who they might like an introduction to or if there is any way that you can be of assistance to them professionally. 10. Become an Opportunity Magnet. Always think and speak positively and never say anything negative. This will help you to become an opportunity magnet—poised to attract, interview and “hire” your next employer.

3. Tune Into the Network. Summer is one of the best times of the year to make new connections and find new opportunities. Contrary to popular belief, there are many summer networking events, planning meetings and social activities going on. 4. Perform an Internal Career Audit. Summer is a perfect time to take an honest look at your career—where you’ve been, where you are today, and where you’d like to go. Identify new goals based on your own definition of career success and then take action. 5. Update Your Career “Tool Kit.” Most job seekers use only their résumé as the cornerstone of their search because their other “tools” are weak or nonexistent. But there are many other documents you should have in your “career tool kit”—accomplishment stories, positioning statement, one-page biography, target company list, contact list, professional references, letters of recommendation, and more. These items are important not just to land the next job—but also to maximize your long-term career success.

REPRESENTING YOU IN THE FINANCIAL MARKETS Dedicated to providing independent, proactive portfolio management to the individual investor.

6. Solidify Relationships. During the summer, most people are naturally more relaxed, convivial and generous in spirit. There is simply no better time to solidify existing relationships and forge new ones.

Gavin A. Tolan, Financial Advisor

7. Volunteer. There are myriad volunteer opportunities available during the summer. This is a good way to help people, to feel good about making a difference, to have a renewed sense of purpose during your search, and to meet other professionals who may be able to help you.

8. Call People. Make new connections through your network and follow up with people you’ve already met. In many cases, people

The Boulders Debuts Arizona Honey Festival September, National Honey Month, is also when Arizona honey is harvested

T

he Boulders Resort in Carefree will premiere its first annual Arizona Honey Festival Sept. 29-30 to celebrate the history, health benefits and culinary delights of the ancient natural ingredient. The festival will be held at el Pedregal, the resort’s distinctive outdoor marketplace, and will feature a variety of events and amenities, including Native American “honey dancer” performances, beekeeping demonstrations, cooking with honey seminars and honey spa treatments. Honey-inspired cuisine will be a major feature of the festival, including a special “Honey Dinner,” honey cakes, honey fry bread, honey cocktails and, of course, a variety of freshly harvested Arizona honey. An “AZ Honey Festival” vacation package is also available.

Sweet History

The Arizona Honey Festival is a natural fit for the resort; in the 1970s, a local Arizona beekeeper was a fixture at the property’s crossroads, at the corner of Scottsdale Road and Carefree Road, where he sold his harvest before The Boulders began. Today, honey remains a local Arizona treasure and a healthy source of nourishment, just as it has been for centuries in the Southwest where a bounty of nectar producing flowers thrive in the warm desert climate. Arizona is perhaps best known for orange blossom honey, a light, mild honey with a delicate flavor favored by many gourmands.

Health Benefits

In recent years, more research has supported ancient beliefs of honey’s health benefits. Honey has been said to contain polyphenols, powerful antioxidants that

may reduce risk of heart disease and cancer. Many people use honey to treat seasonal allergies, and honey is used topically to treat mild wounds because of its natural antibacterials properties. It also is popular among athletes who believe a dose of honey provides a natural energy boost.

Bees “checked in” to The Boulders Resort shortly before summer to produce honey for the resort. The Boulders, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, is offering an “AZ Honey Festival” vacation package in September.
