Crazy, Stupid, Love Skeptic

S

o I’m sitting in this yoga studio interviewing this couple about running a business together. We’d been talking for a while when the husband of 18 years lets fly this ridiculous statement. I mean, I’ve never heard anything like this outside of a chick-flick: “I married someone who is completely different from the person Rosa is right now. And she really makes me fall in love for every single day of every month of every year.” The skeptic in me whispers Seriously? He knows I’m writing this down, right? Then against my will, my traitorous eyes fill with tears and my lips are trembling with the effort not to bawl. Unable to trust my voice, I keep my head bowed as though transfixed by my laptop and steal a glance at the studio’s sales associate at the front desk. She’s blinking like crazy, wiping her eyes, and making a soft “ohh-aww” sound. What’s my point? I guess it’s that we’re all a sucker for a good romance, especially when it embraces the notion that even when we change—maybe even because we change—a special somebody (anybody?) might just be thrilled by the “who” we are at every step. It’s a brave move to put your relationship to the test in the workplace, and all three of the couples featured in our “Dynamic Duos” spotlight this month are inspiring examples of how sweet a professional duet can be. My thanks to them and to family-business expert Nate Sachs and columnist Melissa Rein for true-life examples of spousal support in a good way. You drove the skeptic out of me just in time for Valentine’s Day. Now if only Seal and Heidi Klum would give it another shot.

Scottsdale’s tourism industry posted strong results in January, according to Smith Travel Research. Leads: New Area Business Licenses

:: Property Matters :: Wells Fargo Bank sold a 13,531-square-foot office building in the Scottsdale Airpark at 7020 E. Acoma Drive in Scottsdale to Acoma Holdings LLC, a travel-related services firm, for $1.2 million. Bret Isbell and Russell Fine of GPE Commercial Advisors represented the seller, and Peter Menna of Cassidy Turley/BRE Commercial represented the buyer of the two-story property. Whitestone REIT recently purchased Phase I of Pinnacle of Scottsdale, a 113,108-square-foot class-A community center in North Scottsdale for $29 million. The transaction was originated off-market, and priced at a discount to replacement cost. The center is 100 percent leased. Whitestone now owns five community centers in the North Scottsdale trade area. “We are pleased to announce our seventh acquisition since September 2010, bringing our total to eight properties in the greater Phoenix market,” said Whitestone Chairman and CEO James C. Mastandrea in a statement. “We believe that the North Scottsdale market, which is showing signs of recovery from the recession, is a great hedge against inflation, particularly the purchases we have made at significantly discounted prices for properties with in-place cash flow.”

o one has got your back like your spouse. Going into business with the same person you vowed to honor all the days of your life seems like a smart move—until you consider the fallout of office stressors following you home. Once over the threshold, work conversations can nibble away at the most perfect of unions, upsetting the balance between a marriage relationship and a business liaison. “The biggest problem is knowing when to turn it off,” says Nathan Sachs, founder of Blueprints for Tomorrow, a provider of business solutions and succession planning. “You’ve got to set ground rules and live by them. When you walk into that house at night ... turn it off.” Sachs not only counsels families who are in business together, he’s worked full-time with his wife, Dale, for the past three years, and credits her with empowering their company to grow more rapidly. He says he’s seen

The delicate balance of love and work it time and again—couples who can’t stop talking shop, unaware there’s a price to pay. “After a while, that’s who you become: partners. The marriage takes a hit,” he says. “I have couples who tell me they’ve lost their social circle because it’s all business. They don’t even realize they’re doing it.” It’s part of the fine art of changing hats. Sachs even has a name for it— role identity—and he says it’s a major struggle for “copreneurs,” knowing when to stop being a spouse and start being a partner, and vice versa. The challenge can be as complicated as relationships themselves, with conflict often stemming from traditional male/female behaviors. Women tend to be more nurturing and may bring a sensitivity and protectiveness to the workplace that the husband doesn’t need, Sachs says, pointing to a recent conversation he had with his own wife. “Dale was very against me taking a one-day business trip to Rhode Island this week. That’s

a wife talking, not a partner. It was a good business opportunity, but she was worried about my well-being.” Ego often becomes a factor for men who share a workplace with their spouses, especially if the wife brings a husband into her already successful company. “Conflict starts because he’s not going to play second fiddle,” Sachs says, adding copreneurs have the best results when they start a business together from the ground up. One thing is certain, more couples are working together in today’s tight economy, whether it’s as fullfledged partners or by helping out with tasks such as the books. Sachs estimates more than 50 percent of his clients have a spouse working in their companies in some capacity. “I totally believe if it’s done right, the advantages can outweigh the disadvantages,” he says. “It’s a great balancing act—as long as one plus one equals three.”

For our annual “Dynamic Duos” issue, we asked three successful Airpark “couplepreneurs” to share their stories on how they’ve wed business with marriage. Here’s what they had to say ...

Plunging into the future By Kimberly Hundley

A

sk Moises Martinez if he could have imagined himself downward-dog-deep in the yoga business five years ago, and he looks incredulous. “Never in a million years,” says the long-time publishing industry executive, who now runs three Blissful Yoga studios in the Valley with his wife, Rosa Rendon. Yoga was Rosa’s passion, but she never envisioned herself on the entrepreneurial side of the mat either. The couple’s professional lives have changed radically since Rosa stepped beyond her role as stay-at-home mom to explore a career as a yoga teacher and studio owner. That’s not the only thing that’s changed. “Rosa’s really blossomed into this fantastic person who I not only get the joy of working with every day but the joy of taking

16 | Scottsdale Airpark News February 2012

home every night,” Moises says. “I respect her more now that I work with her.” It happened almost by chance, that ray of opportunity, and it nearly passed them by. But life’s funny. The future can change just by turning a corner, literally. With Moises’ encouragement to follow her passion, Rosa had bought a tiny studio in Glendale where she taught classes. However, the business wasn’t viable in the space, and pre-Recession rent at Rosa’s dream locale in Citadelle Plaza was astronomical. It was do-or-die time when they found themselves driving by the Citadelle again six months into the economy’s nose dive. Rosa was at the wheel, and Moises gave her a choice: turn left into the plaza to see if the lease had become more affordable ... or go straight and close the studio in a month.

Rosa Rendon and Moises Martinez demonstrate the only side effect you will get from the Great Yoga Wall, a smile that won’t go away!

She turned left. “We immediately had a great response from the community, and the word of mouth was totally invaluable,” Rosa says of that first Blissful Yoga studio. “We’re really lucky to have amazing staff and people. They have to be passionate about yoga. We can teach them everything else.” Rosa considers herself blessed to be in the “magical” work of offering health and wellness, and students respond to her personable expertise. While other businesses have struggled in the down economy, Blissful Yoga quickly opened two more studios, one near Desert Ridge and another at the Scottsdale Quarter. The studios offer a variety of classes and a unique yoga wall, which allows students to hang off the wall on straps, as though in traction. “It’s absolutely amazing. Our yoga wall classes are always full,” says Rosa, who teaches 10 classes a week at three locations. Moises’ “part-time” duties include staff management, operations, payroll and putting out fires. As the yoga business grew, he moved his New York City publishing office to the elegant, eco-friendly main studio at the Quarter. “I like to say my job has become my hobby, and her hobby has become my job,” he says. “It’s been a journey, for sure.” The couple strongly believe in supporting the community, which is why Blissful Yoga offers “karma” classes, where a portion of proceeds goes to local charities, as well as “pay what you can” sessions. “You don’t want to make yoga unaffordable for anyone. It really is about making a difference and transcending beyond the business itself,” Rosa says. “As long as people have a smile on their faces after class, we’re happy.”

Though many couples refuse to discuss work on the home front, Moises and Rosa sometimes find themselves sharing ideas or tackling problems at midnight. It works for them, Moises says, because they keep the talks positive—and they don’t look back. “Both of us are very passionate people,” he says. “Whatever needs to get done, we do it, and do it fast, and we’ve learned to live with our decisions. There are no bad decisions; we go past it, no attachments and no grudges. It’s very much a yoga thing.” The couple, who relocated to Arizona from Mexico City in 2004, say they also try to notice surprising things in each other every day, and that helps to keep them going after two decades together. Their advice to other “couplepreneurs” is to not hold each other back from chasing a passion, even if there are consequences. “Be willing to take the plunge into the abyss together, holding hands. It can’t be any scarier than getting married,” Moises says with a laugh. Embarking on a business and the evolution it’s sparked has brought them even closer together, he adds. “I married someone who is completely different from the person Rosa is right now,” says Moises. “She really makes me fall in love with her every single day of every single month of every year.” Rosa smiles at her husband. “He’s been such an important part of this whole journey and so supportive ... he is one of the most generous persons I know. He is putting himself in my dreams, so I love him more.”  continued on page 18 February 2012 Scottsdale Airpark News | 17

But each night the talk of the toners and printers at the heart of John and Nancy Fortunato’s business gives way to the heart of their nearly 32-year marriage: home, children, a new grandchild on the way—most anything but the office. The couple ,whose last name really means fortune, say that luck has nothing to do with how it smiles on their relationship as well as their two Cartridge World franchises on the edges of the Scottsdale Airpark. It involves following some simple rules, the simplest being “leave work at work.” “We might unload a little bit,” John said. “But usually it’s back to family issues, household.” Nancy said she and her husband might spend 15 minutes going over the day, but then it’s put aside. “Then we just talk about fun things,” she said, leaving work talk behind. “I suppress it.” Life at the office goes even more smoothly now than when the Scottsdale Airpark News last interviewed the Fortunatos for a story in the May 2006 issue. “Now we know our routines, our customer base, what they need,” John said. After eight years with Cartridge World, they’ve learned to keep an inventory that matches their customers’ needs so well that when someone asks for something, it’s almost always there. “Staples, Office Max, they send people to us,” John said. Why Not Do It Ourselves? By Kimberly Hundley

ince he’d retired with a fat compensation package, tech wizard Phil Senff could always tell what kind of day his wife had had at the office by listening to the way she came through the door. On this particular day in 2004, he cringed. Kim was steaming, fed up with the shoddy standards of her employer, an in-home care service.

She walked straight through the house and stared at him. “Why can’t we just do this ourselves?” she demanded. Phil thought a minute. “I don’t know. Why can’t we?” Fast-forward a few months of research, and the Senffs had bought themselves a

Comfort Keeper franchise in Phoenix. In their first year, they did $250,000 in revenue, doubling that number ever year after, until “the economy went a little wacky” and revenue settled at a $2 million plateau, says Phil. Today, the Senffs have more than 100 employees and own nine territories—more continued on page 22

than any other franchisee in the entire Comfort Keeper system. But they didn’t “set out to set the world on fire and have the biggest agency in the world,” says Kim. “Our goal was to go into business and take care of as many seniors as we possibly can, and to treat them the way they deserve to be treated—not just the seniors, but the caregivers as well,” Phil explains. “We knew if we did what our real goal was, finances wouldn’t be a problem.” Though Kim and Phil hadn’t owned a business together before, they were confident their skills would be a good fit for Comfort Keepers. Phil had owned and managed a number of enterprises, including one of the first ISP companies in the Valley. Kim had a background in the industry; she’d taken care of seniors since her first job in a nursing home at the age of 17, and

22 | Scottsdale Airpark News February 2012

Yin& most recently she’d worked for a direct competitor, doing every job in that office. “I only wished I had thought of it earlier,” she says now, adding that the couple selected Comfort Keepers because the franchise’s mission matched her own, to take care of clients as though they were your family members. Phil handles the big-picture “business aspect” of things, keeping up on contracts, accounts payable, staff management, while Kim provides a yin to his yang. “She’s a real pro, really concerned about her employees and clients. That is something I haven’t always experienced in different jobs over the years,” he says. The Senffs’ No. 1 rule is not talking about work at home. “You can’t let it be your life,” says Phil, who coaches couples coming into the franchise system. “You’ve got to train yourself that you have 40 hours to do the work. If you take it home at night, you get nothing done during the day and end up doing it at night. I tell people all the time, have your downtime.” Sometimes Kim says she tries to nag Phil at home, but she doesn’t get far. “It

goes in one ear and out the other,” she says, shrugging. Phil and his wife work together in the office every day, but she gets there a couple hours earlier, and he stays later. “We always have lunch together, and that’s where we talk about anything that’s pressing in here, and compare notes,” says Phil. “There are always going to be little disagreements here and there. The key is to talk about it.” Couples who plan to start a business together should create an organizational chart of all the positions that should be in the company and divide them up, he adds. “Even if it’s just the two of you, you’ll know each other’s boundaries and not cross over. If you can do that successfully, you’ll lessen the likelihood of conflict.” These days, Kim admits she’s about ready to take a break from the office for a while. As for Phil, the business his wife sparked needs no schedule tweaking. “My version of retirement is to be able to do what you want, when you want, how you want,” he says. “I tell people I’m still retired.” 

That’s Italian! Fiat of Scottsdale sales zip into nation’s top 10 By Kristina Justin :: Photos by Ross Mason

W

endy Rozov gushes about her Fiat 500. Ask her how it drives, she’ll tell you “like butter.” “It’s the most amazing ride. I love it,” she said. “It’s solid, it holds the road well and I get great gas mileage.” Fiat enthusiasts like Rozov of Phoenix were thrilled when the Italian automaker opened a “studio” in Scottsdale late last fall. People had anticipated the opening for almost a year, and hundreds had put their names on a waiting list for the Fiat 500. Four months after the 4,100-square-foot studio opened in the Airpark, sales are still going strong. In fact, Fiat of Scottsdale is one of the brand’s top-selling dealers, which is good news for the automaker that missed its overall U.S. goals. “We’re ranked No. 7 in the nation as far as sales,” said Damon Ebner, a manager at Fiat of Scottsdale. “We missed fifth place by about five cars.” Fiat left the North American market 30 years ago. After merging with Chrysler in 2009, the automaker returned, debuting its 500 series last

30 | Scottsdale Airpark News February 2012

year. A slow rollout of dealerships and a lack of regional advertising are some of the reasons Fiat sold only half of the 50,000 cars it had hoped to sell. “Not all the dealerships were able to get up and open at the same time,” said Mary Robertson, a lead for Fiat of Scottsdale and a department head at Airpark Dodge Chrysler Jeep, which owns the studio. “One of the requirements was dealers had to have a separate showroom. Not everyone was able to open at the same exact time.” The Scottsdale studio is one of five Fiat dealers designated for Arizona and the only freestanding showroom. Arizona was one of the last states to receive any of the 130 dealerships Fiat has authorized. But that hasn’t impacted the Scottsdale studio, Robertson said. “We’ve had some record months ourselves,” she said. “We’re thrilled at the current time.” In selecting the Scottsdale Airpark, the automaker looked at demographics as well as the proximity of other brands. "One of the major brands they're trying to compete with is the Mini Cooper, and we’re less than one mile from a Mini Cooper dealership," said Robertson.

The Airpark showroom is Arizona’s only freestanding Fiat studio.

Mary Robertson of Fiat of Scottsdale shows off the Gucci style, which runs about $28,000.

The idea is for customers to easily compare the two and ultimately, at least Fiat hopes, make the choice of a Fiat.

Italian Allure

Fiat may have had a slow start overall, but Robertson and Ebner are certain that will change as more people become aware the brand is back. The stronger economy helps too, Ebner said, pointing to an increase in car sales across the board. “People are buying cars,” he said. “Car sales in Greater Phoenix were up 40 percent this year over last year. There’s definitely a pent-up market.” It’s not just the fuel efficiency—38 mpg— or the subcompact design that have people smitten with the Fiat 500. Like most things Italian, it’s the cultural allure. Fiat was founded in 1899 and led the start of Italy’s automotive industry. For many, Fiat represents the Italian way of life. “It’s its own world. It’s the Italian style,” said Ebner. “This car is part of the culture in Italy. When they re-released the 500 in Italy in 2007, they interrupted television to show the car unveiled.” Ebner said most people who walk into the Scottsdale studio talk about that Italian connection. Many of them have an Italian relative or just want to own a slice of Italy, he said. Rozov and her husband, Eric Lynn, are connected more than most. Lynn grew up in Turin, the Motown of Italy and home of Fiat’s world headquarters. His father is an avid collector and, like father like son, Lynn got the bug, Rozov said. “We’re hugely into the cars,” said Rozov, who along with Lynn, own two Fiats, a 1956 600 they bought in Italy and the new 500 they bought in the states. The couple also started the Arizona chapter of Fiat Lancia Unlimited, a club of Fiat enthusiasts from across North America. They participate in all kinds of Fiat-related events such as scavenger hunts and road rallies. Recently, they drove a Fiat 500 across the country from Detroit to Colorado, logging 1,900 miles in six days. “It was an amazing experience and very comfortable,” Rozov said.

Abarth on the Way

The Fiat 500 is the only model sold in the United States. It comes in several different styles including the Pop, Sport, Lounge and Gucci. The Pop and Lounge are the most popular, Ebner said, largely because they offer a lot of car for the money. The Pop starts at around $16,000. On the higher end, is the Gucci, the car pop singer Jennifer Lopez drives in Fiat’s national ad. That car can run about $28,000, Ebner said. Newer Fiat 500s are expected to hit the market this spring, such as the Abarth, a turbo-charged 500 that can go from zero to 60 in about 7.5 seconds —2.5 seconds faster than its non-turbocharged counterparts. A wagon version of the Fiat 500 is also on its way. “One of the benefits of being one of the top 10 dealers is that we can pretty much get the inventory we want, including the Abarth,” Robertson said. Already, 30 to 40 people are on a list for the Abarth, which starts around $22,700, she added. “That’s going to be a huge seller for us,” she said. "We’re going sell those cars like hotcakes.” Rozov and Lynn may not be in line for an Abarth just yet. But they’re happy it’s coming. In fact, they’re happy Fiat is here. Period. “We’re thrilled to see Fiat back in the country,” Rozov said. “Being collectors, we really want this to be a success story.” 

Scottsdale’s Brueckner Named Finalist for 2011 National Advisor of the Year by David G. Leeper

T

homas K. Brueckner, president and chief financial officer of Strategic Asset Conservation in Scottsdale, was recently named a top-five finalist for a prestigious national honor bestowed annually by the editors of Senior Market Advisor magazine. SMA is the leading trade journal for financial advisors serving the retiree and pre-retiree market, and has been naming its Advisor of the Year since 2002. The magazine’s editor, Daniel Williams, announced that this year’s nominees were the strongest class of entrants yet, placing Brueckner in truly elite company. In light of what the stock markets have done to many an investor’s portfolio in recent years, Brueckner and his talented staff have some rather unique “talking points,” credentials that would make many a stockbroker incredulous: Not a single one of their 530-plus clients has lost money to the stock market since 2000—not even amid the financial meltdown of 2008. Secondly, neither Brueckner nor any of the advisors and staff on his team has ever had a consumer complaint in his 22 years in private practice. And perhaps most impressive of all, Brueckner has never lost an existing client to a competitor during his career, due largely to the previous two achievements. How does he do it? “We have the best staff in the business, four amazing women who are brilliant, hyper-organized, thoughtful, and entrepreneurial—they think like a business owner, not like employees,” Brueckner says. He and his staff are also selective when taking on new clients. “We look for people with realistic expectations that suit our corporate culture. Many of our clients are snowbirds who also have homes in the Midwest, where they’re originally from, and they’ve brought those values with

them to Scottsdale. They’re conservative, family-oriented people who live within their means and were looking for a longterm relationship with a local advisor and an organization that believes as they do.” Brueckner, 51, who also has a summer practice in central New England, claims itinerant clients in 18 states and six countries, some of whom conduct their annual reallocations via email and phone appointments. “The trust has been earned, it’s deep, and the affection is longstanding and mutual. It’s pretty common to have clients hug my staff after an appointment, something that’s fairly rare in our industry these days.” Brueckner has taken his business model nationally in recent years, as he and his staff now mentor other top advisors from around the country. “We teach a relational business model, rather than a transactional one. We avoid product purchasers; we’re looking for clients-for-life, people who understand that the Internet can enhance an advisory relationship but can never take the place of that relationship.” Brueckner and his teams are certainly no stranger to awards in recent years. His NH office was the 2010 winner of the Better Business Bureau’s Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics, an honor that the BBB confers on just one small business in a state each year. Thomas also received the 2011 NAIFA Quality Award from the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors “for his dedication and exceptional service to clients, peers, and the industry.” Lastly, Brueckner has been repeatedly named to the ranks of the Top 1% of financial advisors in the world by the Million Dollar Round Table, an elite international organization of high achievers from 76 nations around the globe. This year was Brueckner’s ninth Top of the Table honor with MDRT.

Thomas K. Brueckner So what makes for a good day at Strategic Asset Conservation? “Every day is a great day here,” says Jennie Bond, Brueckner’s office manager. “With a ‘Client Family’ that actively promotes our brand and our mission, every day in the office is a series of warm introductions and annual reunions with great friends..." My wife and I are Strategic Asset Conservation clients ourselves, and of the half-dozen advisors we’ve had over the past 40 years, Thomas Brueckner and his staff are easily the finest of them all. Kudos to Thomas and his team for their good work, and congratulations on another well-deserved honor.  David Leeper, Ph.D., is a retired engineer, volunteer teacher, freelance writer, and conservative blogger, whose columns may be found at teapartytribune.com and westernfreepress.com.

Airport’s 70th Year: Tours, Speakers, Air Fair Sponsors, Good Eats & Visitors

S

cottsdale this time of year is busy for everyone, especially the airport! The peak season starts November and runs through March. Our ramp is filled not only by customers who regularly use the airport, but also visitors who want to take advantage of nice weather, great outdoors, and signature events like the Arabian Horse Show and the Waste By Gary Mascaro, Management Phoenix Open. Here’s a Scottsdale Airport quick update of what is happening at Scottsdale Airport: Although it feels like just yesterday that we opened our doors to 13,000 community members for the 2011 Scottsdale Air Fair, planning is already underway for 2012. This event would not be possible without event sponsors. The Scottsdale Air Fair generates enthusiastic audience involvement which provides a unique and cost-effective marketing opportunity for companies helping to sponsor this community happening. If your company is interested in getting involved in the Scottsdale Air Fair, please don’t hesitate to call me. The 2012 Scottsdale Air Fair will also help us celebrate the airport’s 70th birthday! Scottsdale Airport was built in 1942 and used as an Army Air Corps training facility. The Air Fair will be a great way to learn about the airport’s rich history, as well as celebrate all things aviation.

Do you love airplanes, staying connected and … food? I am proud to announce that after two years of sitting vacant, the airport restaurant is now open! The Zulu Caffe, located inside the Airport Terminal, is open seven days per week, featuring breakfast and lunch Monday- Saturday, happy hour Wednesday- Friday, and brunch on Sunday. See related story p. 62. With expansive views of the runway, you can enjoy a cup of coffee or a nice meal while you watch airplanes take off and land. Did I mention that the airport terminal also has free Wi-Fi available for its customers? Have you ever wondered how Scottsdale Airport operates, what is happening there now or what the airport’s impact is on the community? If you would like an airport speaker to visit your community organization, business association or school group, please contact us. Tours for children are also available through May 15. Our "Kid Tours" offer an interactive experience for groups of six or more, children ages 5 and older. I look forward to sharing more information about everything happening at the airport next time I write.  Gary Mascaro is Scottsdale’s Aviation Director. Prepare Your Big Swing for Stronger Equity Markets

W

ith the improving action in stocks, I want to talk about preparing for a run-up in equity prices. But first, a word about having a disciplined approach before you take action. Barry Bonds, the greatest homerun hitter ever to play Major League Baseball (with some help from performance-enhancing drugs he was “unknowingly” taking) deBy Gavin Tolan, scribed his approach to hitting that I thought Williams Financial contained some real wisdom. Follow me on Group this one. He described picturing a small box out in front of home plate that he used as his swing indicator. As the ball approached the plate, it would need to enter this imaginary box to trigger him to swing. Now while this approach is used by other players, Barry Bonds success comes from his ability to picture a

54 | Scottsdale Airpark News December 2011

smaller box than others and one that is much closer to the plate, leaving him little room for error. So as the ball enters his hitting zone, he can put everything he has into his swing and expect big results with little to go wrong. Here’s a weird segue from Barry Bonds to Warren Buffet, but the Oracle of Omaha says nearly the same thing when he talks about his success in the financial markets. And coincidently, he uses baseball terminology to illustrate his point. He says he knows his strike zone. He knows what he can hit and he knows what he can’t—and he simply waits for the right opportunity to take his big swing. As most know, Mr. Buffett prefers to take big positions in fewer companies than smaller positions in a bunch of companies. He focuses on his opportunity and then goes big. With the equity markets strengthening and our economy showing signs of life, don’t just settle for being in the market—be sure you have a focused allocation. U.S. government bonds had a fantastic 2011, but if the equity markets are where the institutional investors

are heading, you certainly don’t want to be left behind. Follow the smart money and be deliberate with your investment choices. With our retirement savings window shrinking every day we need to be sure we maximize our opportunities when they enter our hitting zone.

Stock Market Update

It looks like the clouds are clearing for stock prices. As I write this, the DJIA and the NASDAQ are clearly in bull markets, with both indexes sporting a 50-day moving price average above their 200-day. Currently, the S&P 500 Index is within shouting distance of this technical indicator and could be there shortly. Small-cap stocks are also closing in on bull market territory. I expect the growing positive economic news tide will lift most equities. On the commodities front, oil is in bull mode and prices could make a run toward $130 per barrel, matching highs reached during the Libya unrest last spring. With Syria in real turmoil and Iran causing tensions in oil supply routes, this is one asset class that could benefit from a host of situations. Growth investors should be positioning their portfolio holdings to take advantage of the renewed interest in riskier assets. The issues with the European debt crisis are now taking a backseat to U.S. corporate earnings and the positive job news here at home. There is a great discussion on the housing market’s return. As the economy improves, most pundits expect the housing market should firm up. The real problem with housing is the time needed to clear the overwhelming residential inventories and foreclosures off the market. It appears that this will take much longer than first thought. Elsewhere however, multifamily housing is doing well. I think growth investors should take a look at the opportunities in this sector as the single-family housing market searches for a bottom. May the trend be with you!  Gavin Tolan is a financial consultant with Williams Financial Group in Scottsdale. Scottsdalian Gets AZ’s

S

cottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center is the first hospital in Arizona to perform a newly approved nonsurgical heart valve replacement procedure, the Edwards Sapien Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). TAVR valves are inserted via a catheter through the femoral artery, without requiring open heart surgery. “This procedure was like winning the lottery and I feel great,” said 84-year-old William Ruser. The Scottsdale resident underwent the successful TAVR procedure at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center in late December, becoming the first person in Arizona to receive the valve. TAVR is significant because it does not require open chest surgery, giving hope for heart patients with inoperable aortic stenosis (failing heart valves). A catheter fed through the femoral artery is used to implant the valve, which recently received FDA approval for commercial use in the United States. “Patients with inoperable aortic stenosis tend to be older and sicker, often with multiple additional health issues complicating their condition,” explained Peggy Morehouse, RN, director of Heart and Vascular Services at Scottsdale Healthcare. “The TAVR procedure gives hope for extending the lives of these patients with improved quality of life.”

First TAVR Heart Valve Hybrid OR

New procedures such as TAVR are possible at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center, thanks to the recent opening of its new Hybrid Operating Room, which combines the latest surgical, cardiac catheterization and 3-D radiologic imaging technologies with real-time patient monitoring. A multidisciplinary team of interventional cardiologists, radiologists and surgeons evaluates each patient for eligibility for the TAVR procedure and all are present in the Hybrid OR, according to Robert Riley, MD, medical director for cardiovascular surgery. “The Hybrid OR integrates multiple technologies that allow procedures like the just-approved TAVR nonsurgical heart valve replacement,” said Gary Baker, senior VP and administrator at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn. More than 5 million Americans are diagnosed with heart valve disease each year. Without an aortic valve replacement, 50 percent of patients will not survive more than an average of two years after the onset of symptoms. More: 480-323-3459. 

Zulu Caffé Takes Off

Zulu CaffÉ

A

fter more than two years with a growling belly, Scottsdale’s Airport Terminal is again home to a restaurant of its own, and not just any restaurant.

Zulu Caffé landed in mid January, boasting an illustrious crew and a tantalizing business plan. Heading up the kitchen is Brian Ford, whose resume includes several years as executive chef for Quiessence Restaurant and the Farm at South Mountain, renowned for its farm-to-table cuisine and arguably the Valley’s top dining spot. Co-captains/owners Dee Dee Maza and Vicki Beaudoin readily admit they splurged on Ford, but they believe the investment will pay off in more ways than one. The partners had eyed the Scottsdale Airpark as an ideal place to relocate their successful catering business, Ciao Baby Catering. Tempe was too far to drive for their growing North Scottsdale clientele, and the prospect of having a restaurant at the Scottsdale Airport itself, where they could showcase their foodstuffs as well as stage special events, was too tempting to pass up, says Maza. Not that it was easy. The airport is owned by the city of Scottsdale, and leasing proved a long and complicated process. Maza and Beaudoin had to put the catering company on hold for six months as they worked on the cafe project, not knowing if they would ultimately win approval from the City Council. “It was a risk,” says Maza. “I just saw the opportunities that were definitely here with the right concept.”

potato chips with blue cheese and bacon are just $5. Breakfast choices range from egg white omelets to “Bananas Foster” French toast. The restaurant is closed at night so it will be available for catering special events. “I’ll also be doing wine pairings and cooking classes,” says Ford, who lives in North Scottsdale. Gunnar Buzzard, a member of the Scottsdale Airport Advisory Commission, took a business associate to Zulu Caffé within a week of the grand opening. “It’s a tremendous asset to the airport and the city of Scottsdale,” he said. “Obviously, there is a lot of competition for the restaurant dollar around that area, so it will take a certain flair for marketing to build clientele over time, but I think there is a very good business argument for what Zulu can do.” Maza says she thinks Zulu has struck the right note: Taylor ’s, the most recent restaurant closure at the airport, may have been too casual, and D’Atri’s–the one prior to that– was perhaps too fancy. “Once you taste our food and see our location, you are going to be back,” she says. “ W h e re e l s e c a n you have a view of the airport and see the jets fly in? There i s n o w h e re m o re magical than Scottsdale Airport—once you find us.”  Photo by Kimberly Hundley

Ciao Baby Catering is now headquartered right next door to the restaurant, which serves breakfast and lunch or brunch daily. The kitchen also offers “Gourmet on the Go” boxed meals for delivery to area businesses and is branching into in-flight catering. The café’s name was inspired by “Zulu” time, the term that civil aviators and the Navy use to refer to Greenwich Mean Time, says Maza. Beaudoin, who has a background in interior design, gave the restaurant/bar and patio a contemporary makeover, replacing faux stones with clean tile, adding lights and creating bar tables. A roll-up door to the patio is planned, along with misters and heaters to make the space usable year-round. Chef Ford’s menu emphasizes local and seasonal ingredients at surprisingly affordable prices. “We’re looking for this to be a marketing tool for our catering business,” explains Beaudoin. “Our percentages may not be really high in the restaurant, but it will benefit us on the catering side. We want people to come in here and taste our food.” Lunch offerings include a selection of sandwiches, paninis, salads and pizzas for $7 to $9. Starters such as garlic-cilantro hummus and warm

(Net)Work It

Sometimes it’s not what you know, but who you know. Networking is the art of developing your personal contacts so you have a network of friends and acquaintances that can help when you’re in need (and vice versa). It can be as simple as getting a referral for the best and cheapest service, or as sensitive as helping someone land on their feet after losing a job. Networking is not about just exchanging business cards and making empty promises to connect again someday. It’s a method to develop your referrals to people outside your immediate social circle. And networking as a couple is one of the fastest and easiest ways to gain personal and professional contacts. By attending events together, you always have a partner in crime that can act as your personal publicist, giving you an instant professional reference you wouldn’t have on your own. After all, if there’s anyone who knows as much about you and your job as you do, it’s your significant other.

Get in the Mindset

Some people prefer to keep their work life and home life completely separate, and that might work for them. But other couples get a great sense of fulfillment out of furthering each other’s busi-

nesses, which ultimately benefits their household overall. Before setting out to network together, take some time to have a conversation with your spouse about 1) what each of you are looking for in a support system and 2) how specifically you can help each other. Ask each other questions. Know each other’s business. Find the synchronicities. Get each other motivated. Push each other to succeed. Engage in healthy competition. By making a conscious effort to challenge each other and work together as a team, you’ll go out into the networking world with a powerful bond, not just as a couple, but also as business partners.

Get a Little Black Book

Not the kind of little black book you’re thinking of, this little book will serve as your method of tracking the people you meet in social and professional situations. Before you get into the networking game, devise a system to organize the contacts you meet in an effective way. Simply storing someone’s name, phone number and email address in your smartphone is not enough. As a public relations professional, my contact database is the lifeblood of my business. And as antiquated as it sounds, I use a Rolodex to keep track of the business cards of people I come into contact with. When I host or attend events, I sometimes come home with 10 continued on page 66

marketingtoolbox or 15 business cards. I have found that it works for me to write any important information about a person I met on the back of the business card before filing it in the Rolodex. That way, I force myself not only to organize my contacts using a method that won’t crash, break or get lost, but I mentally process the information about key contacts. This trains me to remember important details about people when I follow up or run into them.

See and Be Seen

When most people think of networking, they think of awkward settings, nametag stickers and bad appetizers. Fortunately, smart power couples don’t always have to attend professionally organized networking events to expand their Rolodex. Instead, they take advantage of their existing social calendars and always show up prepared to network. It’s not just who your spouse knows,

Wei Tai

but who the two of you know. It could be a friend’s cocktail party, your children’s soccer game, the beach in Maui, or your favorite restaurant in Scottsdale—there are always opportunities to make connections and market yourself. Even if your interactions don’t create an immediate opportunity for you or your spouse, you will develop a larger circle of friends and acquaintances that will enrich your life and theirs just by knowing one another. It sounds cliché, but don’t ever be caught without a business card. Because I tend to carry a small evening bag at night that only holds my iPhone, ID and maybe a lip gloss, my husband has gotten in the habit of carrying my business cards in his wallet. What seems like a small action is actually an important gesture on how much he supports my business ambitions and me. I am also ready for any impromptu networking by carrying his business cards in both my wallet and briefcase. We know of other tech-savvy couples that prepare themselves by storing a digital version of their business card in their phone that can be texted or emailed to a new contact immediately.

Picture this: You and your spouse walk into a room full of people you’ve never met. You start talking to two people standing together. Suddenly you’re engaged in a conversation with one of them, and your spouse is talking to the other person. It’s not only a natural segue, but it’s proper manners to introduce the person you came with. Use every opportunity when introducing your husband or wife to do so properly, explaining who your spouse is and what they do. It’s crucial to be specific. “This is Steven, my husband ... he works in marketing” is not an effective call to action that will lead to a productive business conversation. Instead, try this: “Mark, have you met my husband, Steven? He is the marketing director at XYZ Company. It sounds like you guys could partner together on your next company event. Why don’t you exchange information so you can touch base tomorrow?” Be polite, assertive and sincere in your suggestion. And make a pact with your spouse to always follow up after exchang-

ing information or referrals with people you meet, especially after talking business in an otherwise social situation. For example, as soon as we leave an event, my husband makes a point to send our new contacts a quick email or text to say how much we enjoyed the introduction. The key is that he is specific to mention the next step in building the relationship, whether it’s setting a date for a business lunch, inviting them out somewhere, or sending over information about a topic discussed.

Get Social

In today’s fast-paced and increasingly digital world, old-school networking tactics such as sending holiday cards, thank-you notes and quarterly or annual updates about your family have gone by the wayside. Bring back those classic sensibilities and show the people in your network that you sincerely care about them and want to stay connected. Of course, you should “friend” new contacts on Facebook, engage in casual banter on Twitter and add them on LinkedIn, but don’t let that be your only method of communication. There’s something to be said about receiving a thoughtful card or letter from a friend or contact that shows you haven’t forgotten about them and value the relationship. Ultimately, networking as a couple is about teamwork. Co-networking will enhance communication between yourself and your spouse, and give you contacts you might not otherwise have known. Networking isn’t a short-term activity. You never know when a contact might be in a position to help your “team” or when you might be in a position to help them. Think of networking with your spouse as a long-term commitment that helps your team win at life and benefit the world around you. 

{ advice from weiss { February Business Horoscope SCOTTSDALE AIRPARK

By Weiss Kelly, PMAFA Whether you’re a small-business owner or have other career aspirations, insights into how the planets influence your work month can help you plan for maximum performance and project success.

GREAT RATES!!! OFFICE FOR LEASE

ARIES (3/21-4/19) If you haven’t concluded an agreement or project by the 7th, move on. The New Moon on the 21st brings confidential information that has you re-assessing the last few months’ developments. The slower, introspective week of the 20th culminates in a creative peak. Slow and steady wins the race.

LIBRA (9/23-10/22) Follow through on obligations and wrap them up by the 7th so you have time to mix and mingle in the local business and community scenes. People and events can have an awesome influence on your career right now. After the 23rd, though, focus on work as usual.

TAURUS (4/20-5/20) You continue to be under a lucky influence that brings opportunities, but nothing happens until you respond to them. February is lighter, not many negatives. Group teamwork is essential the first three weeks. Explore new venues and expect some competition. Don’t take on more than you can handle.

SCORPIO (10/23-11/21) You’d rather do things without much input from others, but this is not the month to go introspective. A community out there needs your presence. Work-related changes are inevitable early in the month. Avoid confrontations. Professionally, that big push doesn’t come until the fall.

GEMINI (5/21-6/20) You’re a born communicator, and that’s what it will take this month to bring many business offers your way. January’s holding pattern is broken. Pick up the phone and make appointments from the 7th to the 29th. Excellent month for creative marketing.

SAGITTARIUS (11/22-12/21) The week of the 8th is timely for taking a new approach after December’s shakeup. Don’t overlook the importance of reconnecting with former friends or coworkers. Don’t get discouraged if things aren’t moving as fast as you would like. Next month’s patterns are far more supportive of your efforts.

CANCER (6/21-7/22) Legal matters, forms and contracts are likely to play a role, requiring attention to details. Travel plans may be delayed or canceled. The week of the 21st starts a more productive cycle; people are more receptive and your month ends on a rewarding note.

CAPRICORN (12/22-1/19) You’re in good shape this month because you can make things happen. The week of the 17th is more productive and favorable for arranging a meeting. Your best asset is the ability to take charge and organize others, which means you’ll be working harder (not a problem).

LEO (7/23-8/22) Joint resources, taxes and income require your undivided attention as the month begins. Interacting and compromise is needed when dealing with others. The first half of the month, remember you’re not in control (for now). Come up with a new plan to implement by the 22nd.

AQUARIUS (1/20-2/18) This month you let go of doubts or confusion of past years and commit to your own fulfillment. A major planetary shift will catapult you in a new direction and a clarification. Networking is essential for you to move forward. You are the social guru and trendsetter.

VIRGO (8/23-9/22) You’ll be busy these next five months—and a bit frustrated when people and situations go awry. Mars remains in your sign longer then usual. Use this aggressive and motivated energy. Rich opportunities lie in the health/medical industries. Circle the 14th-29th.

PISCES (2/19-3/20) You can accomplish more by working alone and catching up on emails. Expect interactions with competitors and clients to be more challenging the next few months. Don’t allow this to limit your personal time. Seek out fellow associates.
