Governor Killing Fitness Industry?

The state puts the fitness industry in the ICU with no signs of recovery or any support. And now they are cutting off the oxygen.

In business YOU DON’T DOUBLE DOWN ON STUPID. Yet that is what our politicians seem to be doing. According to the Wall Street Journal, “European countries that have allowed gyms to reopen have reported no uptick in coronavirus infections, suggesting fitness studios might be relatively safe.” And Europe is doing a much better job managing the virus.

businesses. City of San Francisco gyms for its employees are STILL open (Google it). Interesting that those closing our facilities kept theirs open for themselves. Why not, it’s a free gift from us taxpayers who are STILL closed... but STILL paying taxes. Interestingly there does not seem to be a virus spread issue in gyms for them but public tax paying gyms are verboten.

There’s no evidence to support the fact that gyms are contributing to the community spread of COVID-19 above any other types of

THE STATE IS CLOSING THE WRONG BUSINESSES as Ventura County is still needlessly closed to gyms. Clearly not any of the current spread is coming from

gyms, they are closed. But what does the governor do? DOUBLE DOWN ON STUPID. Penalize the businesses that are already closed but allow businesses and institutions that are currently open…AND CAUSING THE SPREAD, to remain open. POLITICIANS (who are still cashing their monthly paychecks) are killing businesses and crushing whole sectors in the state with disregard for an intelligent approach to isolating those spreading the disease and thereby truly protecting the vulnerable. WHY AREN’T THEY CLOSING DOWN CITIES INSTEAD OF WHOLE COUNTIES, the spreaders instead of the already closed? Nevada has instituted a more targeted approach. Rather than penalizing an entire industry or county, they are specifically targeting the cause of the spread. THE ONLY HOPE FOR MOST SMALL GYMS AND FITNESS BUSINESSES IS TO FULLY REOPEN. We have already seen gyms permanently close. One fitness studio

says, “Reopening for those few weeks more than doubled our losses for the month.” The expense of gearing up and reopening then shutting down again condensed over a month of expenses into two weeks. IF ALL THE GYM MEMBERS WERE GETTING TESTED… COUNTIES WOULD PASS THE RATIO TESTS! Fitness members are NOT the people in the hospitals and ICUs and generally not the at-risk people with underlying conditions: In fact, I do not know of a member that has the virus (perhaps healthy with no symptoms) let alone in the hospital or ICU. Fitness helps keep them off the list. Just how many people in the ICU are regular gym users? No one knows or seems to care. FITNESS INDUSTRY PROFIT MARGIN IS GONE! With an industry average 30%+ member loss after closing due to health or finance concerns (that is more than the slim operating profit of most gyms) reopening at any time will be at an operating loss with 8 to 12 months until hopefully recovery.

THE GOVERNOR’S NEW TIER PLAN ALLOWS GYMS TO REOPEN AT 10% CAPACITY IF WE REACH THE NEXT LEVEL. Fat chance of that with the beaches open to the public while neighboring counties have closed their beaches funneling their crowds to Ventura. So if we improve one tier we can open at 10% of capacity, 2 tiers - 25% of capacity and total improvement at 50% of capacity. Lets see the politicians and government departments live on that for themselves without Federal Government handouts. ADDITIONAL FACTS: • Yelp reports 26% of gyms permanently closed as of June 25 • Harvard Business School reports “1 out of 7 small businesses permanently closed” 8/18/2020 • More than 5 million lost health insurance. 8/18/20 • “4 out of 10 Americans face a major threat to personal finances” 8/18/20 • Hospitalizations were six times higher among patients with a reported underlying condition (45.4%) than those without reported underlying conditions (7.6%).

Ventura County-grown watchdog organization has joined in on a lawsuit aimed at holding the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) accountable for reducing smog pollution and protecting the health of residents in Ventura County. On Aug. 23, Climate First: Replacing Oil and Gas (CFROG) joined with the Center for Biological Diversity and the Center for Environmental Health in filing legal action against the EPA in the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. In Brief Ojai Valley Family Shelter retrofitting van for showers

The Ojai Valley Family Shelter has purchased a 25-foot-long ARBOC Bus that will be transformed into a mobile shower vehicle for homeless individuals in the Ojai Valley. During emergencies, like wildfires, it can be used by the entire community. OVFS is still raising all the funds needed to add two showers to the bus. The goal is to complete the project by Dec. 1 to be ready for the winter season, when the shelter resumes its main operations of coordinating with churches and a large team of volunteers to provide a hot meal, a warm, dry and safe place to sleep and a fun movie to watch each night during the winter months. In 2020 the shelter was able to extend its shelter hours as the pandemic caused additional strain on local resources. Major donors supporting the purchase of the new bus include Venco, Sespe Creek Collective, the city of Ojai, Ojai Presbyterian Church, Andrew Gustafson, Cheryl Townsend and many other individuals. The California legislature has passed AB3088, called the Tenant, Homeowner and Small Landlord Relief and Stablization Act of 2020. The bill provides some protections for residential renters to prevent evictions through Jan. 31, 2021, if the renter has fallen behind in rent as a result of the pandemic. Certain landlords of smaller properties or a smaller number of properties are also provided some protections if they have fallen behind on mortgage payments as a result of the pandemic. Unpaid rent between March 1 and Aug. 31, 2020, can be shifted to consumer debt, meaning it cannot be used for evictions. Certain requirements apply and renters should learn more about the requirements. Renters in Ventura County can dial 211 to receive assistance and resources or visit 211ventura.org. — Kimberly Rivers

A walking tour at Foster Park by Kimberly Rivers kimberly@vcreporter.com

tymology may seek to find the original history of a word. But as living descendents of local indigenous tribes reintegrate, mitsquanaqań (Ventureno Chumash), the language of their ancestors into their daily lives, the rest of us have an opportunity to learn the names first given by the first people of this place where we all live today. “At 26, I set out to see if our language could be revitalized. Our last speakers had passed away in the 60’s, however I learned of the voluminous notes of the ethnolinguist, John Peabody Harrington,” said Matthew Vestuto, a member of Barbareño/Ventureño Band of Mission Indians. He has served as language program coordinator for the tribe. He graduated from Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, with a degree in Language Revitalization, Linguistics and Media and is a Board member of Advocates for Indigenous California Language Survival. “There is ample ‘deep sentence structure’ recorded which assures we can revitalize [our language]. There’s some audio, too. In the course of transcribing these notes, I saw placename trips here and there, so I began to collect these in one place. Then I mapped them with some help from my friend Devlin Gandy.” Those maps, and other stories Vestuto is gathering and learning are being coalesced into a publishing project through ’iskiliwil, the publishing arm of the mitsqanaqań language revitalization effort. “I’m reorienting to our indigenous worldview. People talk about culture, but neglect the culture dish, the context. Knowing our world, in our language, is foundational,” he said in explaining the importance of this work to him. “Placenames are a wonderful way for our people to begin learning our language. It doesn’t involve complicated grammar and the names are immediately applicable.” Last week, the Ventura County Reporter joined Vestuto for a walking tour at Foster Park along the Ventura River to hear some of these stories and place names. “Our ancestors were hospitable and welcoming. Stealing land tends to sour that cultural value, however, I feel that sharing our intimate understanding, and love, of place will enrich the residents and visitors to our territory, inspiring in them a love and a deeper sense of responsibility for the health of our world.”

ts̓ap ši’išaw | House of the Sun

“This is Red Mountain. In our language it’s called ts̓ap ši’išaw, House of the Sun.” Vestuto said. “If you stay around here

around sunset, it just goes right there.” He points to the path the sun will take as it sets, spilling its rays on the side of the mountain. “You can’t see it from here, but across the way, you know where Teen Challenge is? The hill that is on . . . I believe that is katswiw or the Little Bird. It was a shrine hill. This all is a sacred area….ka’axtawaqh it means North Wind Place, and you can feel why, the breeze is pretty constant here. It’s where the interior climate meets the Ventura River and the coastal climate because everything narrows down here.”

Passing a row of homes along the bike path, we continued. “Somewhere in here there was a sacred sycamore tree, the Spanish called it Aliso del Viento, the Wind Sycamore...There are a few of these that we know about. One is a sacred sycamore tree up the Santa Clara River near kamulos, today called Camulos named for the California Juniper. The area is sacred, not just the tree. Just as a cave is a sacred place, not just the paintings... The sycamore has a branch growing out to the west and they train it to form like an arch,” he said, bending his arm at the elbow. “And this particular sycamore had a big cavity, in

it there was an . . . anthropomorphic effigy made of wood, adorned with feathers and sqap, feather bouquets hanging upside down around the effigy. We dance with those. There were baskets all around the feet of the effigy in which people would deposit offerings...of seeds, shell bead money, later metal money, all sorts of things. Pine nuts, acorns.” “[The effigy] was of the deity called slow̓, which is Golden Eagle, and he holds up the upper world, and when his wings go flapping up and down, that’s what gives us the phases of the moon. He’s kind of partnered up with the sun. Slow̓ is also a word used to describe the leader of a village,” he said, sweeping his arm through the air indicating the area southeast of where he stood. “Where Juan de Jesus Tumamait, leader of the Mission Indians during the transition between Mexico and America lived was called kaspat kaslow̓, The Eagle’s Nest. Rather than the name of the place, it signified the seat of power and could move.” As for where the Wind Sycamore is today, “a man purchased the land and planted apricots, he supposedly cut it down. Metalachi adapts to the drive-in music experience

by Alan Sculley for Last Word Features

F

or most music acts, there were some signs ahead of time that the COVID-19 pandemic might interrupt their touring plans. For Metalachi, the new reality hit in a most untimely manner, literally as the group began its year of touring. “When the quarantine happened, the very first night was our first show of our first big tour of the year,” violinist Queen Kyla Vera recalled in a phone interview over Labor Day weekend. “We actually had a pretty decent crowd. They said it [the crowds] had been dying off, and when we went, I think they said it was two-thirds of the capacity it normally would [be]. So it was still pretty good, but the venue said they wouldn’t be able to stay open after us for awhile. We ended up having to go home because almost every venue had to close.” That was six months ago, and Metalachi has been out of action pretty much since then. But this weekend, the band, which blends metal and hard rock songs with mariachi styles, will be back on stage, but in a setting nobody would have predicted for a concert at the start of 2020. The group will perform a drive-in show Saturday at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. While some in the music industry have been cool to the unusual forms concerts have taken during the pandemic, Vera is relishing the creativity that is being shown as the touring industry figures out ways to present live music while most conventional venues remain shuttered. “I think it’s really in a way really cool to see everything evolving. It’s just an evolution,” she said. “We’re learning new ways to do things and to be able to give people performances and bring joy into their lives. But it’s just a different setting. It’s innovative and it’s fresh, and I think it will be really cool to try something new.” “It seems really exciting,” Vera continued. “I’ve seen a lot of footage from other peoples’ drive-in experiences, and it seems like there are a lot of cars. And the stage, I believe, is 360 degrees. I guess the cars go all around the stage. So that will be pretty cool.” For a band that does a lively, very visual and interactive show, complete with elaborate outfits, some band members wearing face paint and others wearing huge sombreros that have blinking lights, playing a drive-in show will require some adjustment, but Vera thinks the band’s show will translate fine. “I think audience participation will be a little bit different, for sure, because they’ll be obviously sequestered in their cars or next to their cars,” she said. “So we have been thinking, how are we going to have to change that up and still keep the audience engaged when they’re unable to be right up at the stage? But I think overall it might be easier in some ways because, for example, they have the radio station they tune into while we play, so they’ll

probably be able to hear and understand better. Sometimes with a PA system, not everyone is in the right spot to hear everything clearly or everyone else is being noisy. So I think they’ll get a better experience that way.” Perhaps it’s fitting that a band that defies typical rock music conventions would be one of only a select number of acts doing something as unconventional as a drive-in show. The actual details about Metalachi’s history have remained sketchy, as band members don’t divulge their real names and have created a colorful tale to explain the origins of both the band and its unique musical hybrid. As the story goes, the original lineup of five brothers were born poor in Veracruz, Mexico and sent by their mother on a journey to the United States as babies inside saddlebags on a burro. The arduous and slow journey ended some 14 years later when the burro arrived mere yards from the American border. The brothers emerged and ran across the border where as luck would have it, they found an album sleeve of Black Sabbath’s Paranoid on the ground. The brothers were fascinated by Sabbath’s dark, face-melting metal, and one evening while listening to the classic metal album, they were struck by the idea of playing the song

“Iron Man” in their native mariachi style and Metalachi was born. That’s the band’s story and they’re sticking to it. Today, a decade or so since forming, Metalachi has released three albums — Uno, Dos and Tres — filled with their reinventions of songs by a who’s who of metal and hard rock bands, including Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Alice In Chains, Led Zeppelin, Guns ‘N Roses and even Queen, which got a Mexican makeover of its epic hit, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” on Tres. The band has gone through some personnel changes over the years, with the current lineup featuring Coco Caliente on vocals, Vera on violin, Johnnie Sucio on guitarron, Paco Halen on guitar and Diablo Huero on trumpet. The five members of Metalachi are all accomplished musicians, and their talents are quite evident, both on album and on stage. While there is certainly some kitsch to what Metalachi does musically, the arrangements of the songs are consistently inventive, as the group takes the heavy originals and transforms them into mainly acoustic, drummerless versions done in the mariachi tradition. The arrangements usually take some work and trial and error before they come together, Vera said. “I know as a group, the first thing we do is,

we determine what kind of beat we want for the song,” she said. “So are we going to make this a cumbia? Are we going to make this a faster song? We pick out the beat and then we go from there. We pick out the style of mariachi we’re trying to emulate when we cover the song . . . And it evolves. It takes a little bit of time. There are very few songs that we’ve written all the way through, arranged all the way through, without playing it a bunch first.” Vera said the band had begun working on new material before the pandemic hit and may play a couple of new covers during the Ventura Fairgrounds show. The band will also have a special treat with a guest appearance by Alex Lopez, drummer of Suicide Silence. He figures to add some thump to Metalachi’s sound. “Yeah, he’s a killer drummer and he’s Mexican American as well and he has all of those beats,” Vera said. “I feel like we mesh really well together and he has a deep understanding for what we do. It’s going to be great. We’re really excited.” Metalachi performs on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 8 p.m. for Concerts in Your Car at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, 10 W. Harbor Blvd., Ventura. A volunteer maintenance crew has been rebuilding the museum’s historic grape arbor, and local filmmakers Dan O’Connell and Katie Ryan have helped shoot a new orientation film. In addition, a new, improved and mobile-friendly website has been launched. Vintage photographs and articles are now available online, with educational projects and other programming coming soon. In other new developments, Bob Cox rebuilding the Rancho Camulos Museum’s arbor. (Photo submitted) the Rancho Camulos Museum Research Library has been renamed the Marie Wren Research Library, in honor of Fillmore resident Marie Wren. Wren is a charter volunteer, having served as the museum’s first docent council chair more than 20 years ago. She donated more than 200 books to the research library’s collection and also made a financial contribution used for shelving, furnishings and other supplies. Wren is also a published author, whose Stories to Be Told: Tales About the Pioneer People and Places in Little Santa Clara River Valley, Southern California, came out this summer. The museum is actively recruiting new volunteers and docents. No experience is necessary; just a passion for history. Training takes place via Zoom, and duties may include supporting fundraising efforts, gardening, maintenance projects and assisting in the archives. New Associate AD for Rubicon

The board of the Rubicon Theatre Company has appointed Chris Butler as its new associate artistic director. Butler is an Ovation and NAACP award winner for his work in Yellowman at the Fountain and Matrix theaters in Los Angeles, and has performed at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival as well as on Broadway (in the Tony-nominated 110 in the Shade). Local audiences may remember Butler from Gem of the Ocean, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and, most recently, Voices of America, live streamed this summer. In his new role, Butler’s duties will include play selection, casting, directing and community relations. In addition, he will also be responsible for new play Chris Butler (Photo submitted) development and guiding the Rubicon’s renewed and expanded commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. “I look forward to interfacing between artists, audiences, donors and board members to build and implement a plan and hope to take the organization to new and exciting places,” said Butler. www. rubicontheatre.org

BAA elects new board

In July, the Buenaventura Art Association elected new officers to its board of directors: Joe Osborne (president), Janet Black (vice president), Donna Zaza (secretary) and Debi Nowak-Hawkes (treasurer). CSUCI dance instructors honored

Associate Professor of Performing Arts/Dance Heather Castillo and Performing Arts/Dance Lecturer MiRi Park of California State University, Channel Islands, have won a 2020 Faculty Innovation and Leadership Award from California State University. Castillo and Park were recognized for their CORontine Corps project, a worldwide virtual dance project which “humanized” the online learning experience and has influenced the way dance is taught virtually. Students from around the world were invited to submit a recording of themselves dancing during the pandemic. Castillo is currently editing together more than 50 submissions, which will be uploaded to YouTube, and might run the project again this fall. In addition, the duo developed a guide that was circulated far and wide throughout the dance community. “Considerations for Moving University Dance Classes Online” was created in March,

shortly after CSUCI switched to online learning due to the coronavirus pandemic, and draws heavily on the instructors’ experience with virtual instruction following wildfires and other crises that CSUCI has faced in the last few years. “We found ourselves crisis-teaching and conditioned in ways other campuses haven’t,” Park said. “This came from a place of wanting to help others in the university dance community, not because we are experts, but because we were ahead of the curve.” The guide was shared through the Dance Studies Association and became a resource for universities throughout the United States. Castillo and Park also hosted webinars, and participated in the Christena Lindborg Schlundt Lecture Series at the University of California, Riverside. The Faculty Innovation and Leadership Awards honor CSU faculty and staff who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership that advances student success. www.csuci.edu

New ED for CIMM

Adri Howe has been named the new executive director of the Channel Islands Maritime Museum in Oxnard. Howe, a graduate of University of California, San Diego, brings extensive nonprofit experience to the museum, having previously served as president of California Coastal Horse Rescue in Ojai. She will help oversee the museum’s continuing expansion through educational programs, top-notch art, digital experiences and more. “I look forward to building on the great foundation that was laid down almost 30 years ago by Harry Nelson and has been supported over the years with the kind and generous support of the Nelson family, an engaged board of directors, a dedicated corps of volunteers and hard-working staff members,” said Howe upon accepting the position in August. cimmvc.org

OPC expands, diversifies and goes online

For the first time in more than two decades, the Ojai Playwrights Conference was unable to continue its prestigious play development and residence program in the traditional format. But like most cultural organizations, it took its programming online, offering a series of virtual residencies. OPC has selected 15 playwrights for play development through its Onward Together initiative — twice the number it has taken in the past. Eight will participate in the OPC Foundry Project through October, working with a team to build new dramatic work needing more writing, further research or other production support to create a Zoom workshop. In Aziza Barnes (Photo submitted) November, seven playwrights will develop work online through the OPC 1st Stage Workshop Project, with informal readings and ongoing dramaturgical work. In selecting this year’s participants, OPC aimed to “fulfill its mission to develop plays and artists committed to building a better world.” An effort was made to collaborate with playwrights of color, particularly Black artists, working on compelling stories that address the viral, racial and environmental challenges of today. The 2020 participants include Luis Alfaro, Will Arbery, Jon Robin Baitz, Aziza Barnes, Vivian Barnes, Eboni Booth, Bill Cain, Franky Gonzalez, Samuel D. Hunter, Zora Howard, Elizabeth Irwin and Julia Izumi. All 15 plays will be produced for the 2021 Summer New Works Festival in Ojai, if gatherings are allowed by then. www.ojaiplays.org

New state guidance for language, arts education

This summer, the State Board of Education adopted new guidelines for educators to provide quality instruction in world languages, and in dance, visual and media arts, music and theatre for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The newly adopted 2020 California Arts Education Framework for Public Schools, Transitional Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve provides guidance and support for educators and administrators implementing the 2019 California Arts Standards for Public Schools, Prekindergarten Through Grade Twelve. The framework recommends standards-based instruction; teaching through creating, performing and responding; culturally and linguistically responsive teaching to maximize inclusivity; and using the principles of Universal Design for Learning to remove barriers and foster inclusion. The guidance developed for world languages, called the 2020 World Languages Framework for California Public Schools, Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve, addresses standards related to communication, culture and connection. The framework aims to promote the development of cultural competence, critical thinking and various modes of communication in any language being studied. Warner Henry: 1938-2020

Ventura County-based chamber music organization Camerata Pacifica mourns the passing of Warner Henry, one of its most generous patrons, who died Aug. 1 of natural causes. The Los Angeles-based philanthropist, along with his wife, Carol, supported a number of organizations throughout Southern California, including the Los Angeles Opera, Chamber Orchestra, Music Chorale and Philharmonic; The Colburn School; and Musica Angelica. Warner served on Camerata Pacifica’s board and helped bring the music organization’s performances to LA. In addition, he helped found the Chamber Music LA collaborative, bringing together Camerata Pacifica and other chamber music providers to promote the genre. “Their support was meaningful and their beautiful home ever open, always hosting a fundraiser for a worthy arts organization,” recalled Adrian Spence, Camerata Pacifica’s artistic director, in an email noting Henry’s passing. “Warner was a passionate and knowledgeable music lover, with a particular fondness for baroque music, and for Mozart and Beethoven.” cameratapacifica.org September 10, 2020 —

ADVICE GODDESS

by amy alkon

small? If so, is there any way to get them to see him in a better light? — Concerned Aunt

Kick The Hobbit

My 23-year-old nephew is a nice guy, a college grad with a good job who’s a loving pet owner. The women in the family love his ironic mustache, his tattoos, and his way of making people laugh, but the men, including my husband, tend to see him in a negative light. I struggle to understand why they think so little of him. But maybe that’s it: My nephew’s not a big guy. He’s maybe 5-foot-6, and while that’s not terribly short, my family skews tall, with all the other men 6-foot-3 and over. From reading evolutionary theory in your books and columns, I’m wondering, might these men subconsciously dislike him because he’s

Your nephew sounds like a good guy who’ll eventually be some lucky woman’s three-fourths and only. You’re on to something about height affecting our evaluation of other people. Evolutionary researchers Gert Stulp and Abraham “Bram” Buunk observe that, across cultures, “taller stature” is linked with higher social status, and historically, “The term ‘big man’ has been used to denote an individual of both high social status and physical stature.” In fact, the researchers explain, because physical dominance was the primary path to power for much of human evolutionary history, “it seems likely that ‘big men’ experienced increased social status” because of their “physical superiority in competition with others.” In other words, though taller doesn’t always equal stronger, in general, the bigger the bro, the bigger the beatdown he could dispense. Today, physical dominance is still the currency of power in really scary neighborhoods (including scary cellblocks). However, a garden gnomesized man can make up in stacks of

thousand-dollar bills the leverage he’d have from physical stature. And recall that would-be duel from “Raiders of the Lost Ark” with some huge creep brandishing a giant scimitar at Harrison Ford — who simply draws his gun and shoots the guy. Likewise, the local Goliath might be no match for a wellarmed Mr. Stubby. However, though we’re living in modern times, the psychology currently driving our behavior is seriously antique, calibrated for the hunter-gatherer way back when. In our modern world, it often leads us to behave in unnecessary and even counterproductive ways. Our psychological response is typically subconscious, so, for example, we might sometimes think less of somebody less-than-towering without understanding why. This could explain some of the findings Stulp and Buunk cited. Even in “contemporary, industrialized society,” tall people rule, achieving “greater levels of upward social mobility.” This is seen even when a taller person and a shorter one are siblings with a shared environment (researcher-speak for growing up in the same home). Additionally, from childhood on, “Height may also affect how people perceive

themselves, and so influence behavior” (in turn influencing how other people perceive and treat them). Though prior research finds perceptions of a person’s dominance and high status are related to height, Stulp and Buunk’s team explored the influence of height on people’s behavior. For example, in a narrow pedestrian passageway, they observed that both taller men and taller women were more likely to storm forward unyieldingly, forcing shorter pedestrians to give way and let them pass. Likewise, on a crowded shopping street, when a shortie was coming from the opposite direction, people were less likely to step aside, which resulted in the shorties having more collisions. After I had you do “homework,” asking your male relatives whether they dislike your nephew, and if so, why, you came back on a positive note. They told you they don’t dislike him; in fact, they say they like him. They just seem to talk trash about him over his attitudes about money. For example, your husband goes “on and on” about how the nephew’s paying too big a monthly nut for his new truck. Maybe this triggers fears in your husband that he’ll be asked for money if the guy loses his job, and he’s just

venting. And going back to the evolutionary well, gossip is sometimes used as a form of signaling. Perhaps your husband and other men in the family OMG-ing about the big bucks for the truck are ultimately promoting themselves as fiscally wiser. You do say the older dudes in the family don’t have such a harsh attitude about other (taller) young nephews who are less responsible and together than the travel-sized one. So, maybe there is diminished respect for him because of his shorter stature. It’s really impossible to do more than loosely speculate. All in all, you probably don’t need to worry about your nephew, because he sounds happy and well-adjusted. Over time, I suspect the men in your family will come to realize that some stories just aren’t complete without the little guys. FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES

(March 21-April 19):

“It’s not that some people have willpower and some don’t,” observes author James S. Gordon. “Rather, it’s that some people are ready to change and others are not.” Lucky for you, Aries! Your willpower is even more potent than usual right now, and your willingness to change is growing stronger. And so very soon now, I expect you will reach the threshold that enables you to act crisply and forcefully. You will become so convinced that it’s wise to instigate transformation that you will just naturally instigate transformation. Adjust, adapt, improvise, improve!

He defines it as what happens when you’re completely absorbed in what you are doing: “immersed in a feeling of energized focus,” with “full involvement and enjoyment in the process of the activity.” According to my reading of the astrological omens, you are extra likely to enjoy such graceful interludes in the coming weeks. But I hope you will be discerning about how you use them. I mean, you could get into a flow playing video games or doing sudoku puzzles. But God and Life and I would prefer it if you’ll devote those times to working on a sublime labor of love or a highly worthy quest.

GEMINI

(May 21-June 20):

According to researcher Rosalind Cartwright, “Memory is never a precise duplicate of the original. It is a continuing act of creation.” Neurologist Oliver Sacks agrees, telling us, “Memories are not fixed or frozen, but are transformed, disassembled, reassembled, and recategorized

by rob brezsny

with every act of recollection.” Reams of additional evidence also suggest that our experience of the past is always being transformed. In accordance with astrological potentials, I invite you to take advantage of this truth. Re-imagine your life story so it has more positive spins. Re-envision the plot threads so that redemption and rebirth are major features. Engage in a playful reworking of your memories so that the epic myth of your destiny serves your future happiness and success.

CANCER

(June 21-July 22):

All of us are susceptible to fooling ourselves and lying to ourselves. And all of us are susceptible to the cowardice that such self-sabotage generates. But the good news is that you Cancerians will have an expansive capacity to dissolve and rise above self-deception in the coming weeks — and will therefore be able to call on a great deal of courage. As Cancerian author and Buddhist teacher Pema Chödrön says, “The essence of bravery is being without self-deception.”

LEO

(July 23-Aug. 22):

If you like, I will give you the waning crescent moon and the dawn breeze. Do you want them? How about sudden bursts of joy for no apparent reasons and a warm greeting from a person you thought had a problem with you? Would you be interested in having those experiences? And what about an unexpected insight into how to improve your financial situation and a message from the future about how to acquire more stability and security? Are those blessings you might enjoy? Everything I just named will be possible in the coming weeks — especially if you formulate a desire to receive them and ask life to provide them.

VIRGO

(Aug. 23-Sept. 22):

Virgo poet Mary Oliver was renowned for giving herself permission. Permission to do what? To become a different person from the self she had been. To shed her familiar beliefs and adopt new ones. To treat every experience as an opportunity to experiment. To be at peace with uncertainty. I think you’ll be wise to give yourself all those permissions in the coming weeks — as well as others that would enhance your freedom to be and do whatever you want to be and do. Here’s another favorite Mary Oliver permission that I hope you’ll offer yourself: “And I say to my heart: rave on.”

LIBRA

(Sept. 23-Oct. 22):

“The more unintelligent people are, the less mysterious existence seems to them,” wrote philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer. I agree with that idea, as well as the converse: The more intelligent people are, the more mysterious existence seems to them. Since I expect you to be at the peak of your soulful intelligence in the coming weeks, I am quite sure that life will be exquisitely mysterious to you. It’s true that some of its enigmatic qualities may be murky and frustrating, but I suspect that many of them will be magical and delightful. If you ever wanted your life to resemble a poetic art film, you’re going to get your wish.

SCORPIO

(Oct. 23-Nov. 21):

Comedian and actor Aubrey Plaza bragged about the deal she made. “I sold my soul to the devil,” she said. “I’d like to thank the devil.” Plaza is quite popular and successful, so who knows? Maybe the Prince of Darkness did indeed give her a boost. But I really hope you don’t regard her as a role model in the coming weeks — not even in jest. What worked for Plaza won’t work for

you. Diabolical influences that may seem tempting will not, in the long run, serve your interests—and may even sabotage them. Besides, more benevolent forces will be available to you, and at a better price.

SAGITTARIUS

(Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

Many of you Sagittarians specialize in generous breakthroughs and invigorating leaps of truth. Often, you make them look easy and natural — so much so that people may not realize how talented you are in generating them. I hope you adjust for that by giving yourself the proper acknowledgment and credit. If this phenomenon shows up in the coming weeks — and I suspect it might — please take strenuous measures to ensure that you register the fullness of your own accomplishments. To do so will be crucial in enabling those accomplishments to ripen to their highest potential.

CAPRICORN

(Dec. 22-Jan. 19):

Holocaust survivor and author Elie Wiesel wrote, “When you die and go to heaven, our maker is not going to ask, ‘why didn’t you discover the cure for such and such? why didn’t you become the Messiah?’ The only question we will be asked in that precious moment is ‘why didn’t you become you?’” I hope that serves as a stimulating challenge for you, Capricorn. The fact is that you are in an extended phase when it’s easier than usual to summon the audacity and ingenuity necessary to become more fully yourself than you have ever been before.

AQUARIUS

(Jan. 20-Feb. 18):

Years ago, comedian Lenny Bruce observed, “Every day people are straying away from the church and going back to God.” His statement is even truer today than it was then. Pew Research Center, a nonpartisan think tank,

has gathered the concrete evidence. Church attendance was way down even before the pandemic struck. Now it’s even lower. What does this have to do with you? In my astrological opinion, the coming months will be prime time for you to build your intimate and unique relationship with God rather than with institutions that have formulaic notions about who and what God is. A similar principle will be active in other ways, as well. You’ll thrive by drawing energy from actual sources and firsthand experiences rather than from systems and ideologies that supposedly represent those sources and experiences.

PISCES

(Feb. 19-March 20):

Psychologist Carl Jung wrote, “The function of dreams is to restore our psychological balance by producing dream material that re-establishes the total psychic equilibrium.” According to my reading of the astrological omens, you especially need this kind of action right now. To expedite your healing process, meditate on what aspects of your life might have become too extreme or one-sided. Where could you apply compensatory energy to establish better equipoise? What top-heavy or lopsided or wobbly situations could benefit from bold, imaginative strokes of counterbalance? Homework: What’s the best possible commotion you could stir up — a healing commotion that would help heal and liberate you? FreeWillAstrology.com.

The child may be ordered placed in long term foster care, subject to the regular review of the Juvenile Court; or, a legal guardian may be appointed for the child and letters of guardianship be issued; or, adoption may be identified as the permanent placement goal and the Court may order that efforts be made to locate an appropriate adoptive family for the child for a period not to exceed 180 days and set the matter for further review; or, parental rights may be terminated. After making such an order, the Court shall have no power to set aside, change, or modify it, but this shall not be construed to limit the rights to appeal the order. If the Court, by order or judgment, declares the child free from the custody and control of both parents, or one parent if the other no longer has custody and control, the Court shall, at the same time, order the child referred to the licensed County adoption agency for adoptive placement by that agency. Pursuant to Welfare and Institutions Code Section 366.26, a hearing has been scheduled for your child. You are hereby notified that you may appear on 11/23/2020, at 8:30 a.m., or as soon as counsel can be heard in Courtroom J1 of this Court at Juvenile Justice Center 4353 Vineyard Ave. Oxnard, CA 93036. YOU ARE FURTHER ADVISED as follows: At the hearing the Court must choose and implement one of the following permanent plans for the child: adoption, guardianship, or long term foster care. Parental rights may be terminated at this hearing. On 11/23/2020, the Human Services Agency will recommend termination of parental rights. You are entitled to be present at the hearing with your attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, you are entitled to have the Court appoint counsel for you. A thirty-day continuance may be granted if necessary for counsel to prepare the case. At all termination proceedings, the Court shall consider the wishes of the child and shall act in the best interest of the child. Any order of the Court permanently terminating parental rights under this section shall be conclusive and binding upon the minor person, upon the parent or parents, and upon all other persons who have been served with citation by publication or otherwise. After making such an order, the Court shall have no power to set aside , change, or modify it, but this shall not be construed to limit the rights to appeal the order. If the Court, by order or judgment, declares the child free from the custody and control of both parents, or one parent if the other no longer has custody and control, the Court shall, at the same time, order the child referred to the licensed County adoption agency for adoptive placement by that agency. The rights and procedures described above are set forth in detail in the California Welfare and Institutions Code Section 366.26. You are referred to that section for further particulars. Michael J. increase this figure prior to sale. The Beneficiary may elect to bid less than the full credit bid. The beneficiary under said Deed of Trust heretofore executed and delivered to the undersigned a written Declaration of Default and Demand for Sale, and a written Notice of Default and Election to Sell. The undersigned caused said Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located and more than three months have elapsed since such recordation. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder's sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 916-9390772 or visit this Internet Web site www.nationwideposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case 131196-1. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
