Another 12-year-old skateboarder, Alana Smith also made an incredible showing at X Games. She received a silver medal in the “Women’s Skateboard Park” event. She also credits her mother with getting her started in skateboarding. “I saw it on TV and I kept begging my parents and my mom finally got me a skateboard…and my dad didn’t even know about it,” mused Alana, who has been training with Kids That Rip! for five years. In addition to her medal win at X Games, Smith was also inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records for her achievement of becoming the youngest person to medal at the games. Although she travels quite a bit for skateboarding competitions, she anticipates that she will be able to juggle skateboarding and the increased demands of junior high schooling when she goes to Fremont Junior High this fall. With 40,000 square feet of indoor, air-conditioned fun, Kids That Rip! offers skateboard and scooter instruction for ages 3 and older. There is also time to register for the last several weeks of summer camp (ages 5-15), take a free introductory class or enjoy skateboarding during open session. For the first time in nearly a decade, the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, led by Conductor Keith Lockhart, will perform in the Valley on Nov. 16. “The Best of the Boston Pops” presented by the Arizona Ford Dealers is being held at Hohokam Stadium, 1235 N. Center St. in Mesa. The world-famous orchestra will play its way through a variety of American music, from blockbuster Broadway show tunes to Hollywood silver screen classics. For fans of all ages, there’ll also be a patriotic sing-along and a medley of holiday favorites sure to put everyone in the spirit of the forthcoming season. The evening will conclude with a show- stopping fireworks spectacular choreographed to Tchaikovsky’s Overture of 1812 and Stars and Stripes Forever. This epic musical event pays tribute to the landmark Hohokam Stadium, opened in 1977 and rebuilt in 1996. It is the grand finale happening before the venue closes for a $20 million renovation. Plans call for the stadium to re-open when the Oakland Athletics begin Spring Training in 2015. The Boston Pops, in its 128th year, features gifted musicians conducted

by such geniuses as Arthur Fiedler, John Williams and now Lockhart. One of Fielder’s great dreams was to establish a series of outdoor orchestral concerts for the people of Boston. In 1929, one year before he became conductor of the Boston Pops, his dream became reality and the Esplanade concerts were inaugurated. Among many illustrious performances over the years, the annual Fourth of July concert was first held in 1976, when 400,000 people attended as part of the Bicentennial celebration. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, it was the largest audience in history for an orchestra concert. That record has since been broken twice, first in 1998 and again in 2003, when more than a half-million people attended that year’s concert. Doors open at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16. The performance begins at 5 p.m. Tickets are $25, $39 or $49. Field level floor seats are $75 and $95. Tickets may be purchased at the Mesa Amphitheatre and Mesa Arts Center box offices or online at www. bostonpopsmesa.com. For additional information, visit www.bostonpopsmesa.com.

Pilgrim Lutheran Offers Discounted Tuition for Kindergarteners Pilgrim Lutheran School will be offering half off the regular tuition for all kindergarteners, a savings of more than $2,000. With scholarships available, the cost could be reduced even more. More than 500 students have graduated from Pilgrim’s kindergarten program, having benefited from small classroom sizes offering more one on one attention. Because of the increased emphasis on the language arts, blocks of time throughout the day have been designated to guided reading, reading groups and reading aloud. Besides the language arts, there are also times designated specifically to math, social studies, science, handwriting and Bible study.

Valerie Kaff, 2012-13 Mountain View High School senior, has been named the Gatorade Arizona Softball Player of the Year, according to USA Today. The award recognizes athletic excellence, outstanding academic achievement and exemplary character—including volunteerism, sportsmanship and leadership—on and off the field. Kaff is the first Gatorade Arizona Softball Player of the Year to be chosen from Mountain View. “Val is a phenomenal talent and team player,” said Joe Goodman, Mountain View’s head softball coach. “What makes Val so special is that she is a phenomenal talent, but her priorities all season have been about the team and about winning games. Added assistant coaches Giles Mead and David Tellef, “She never allowed her personal ambitions to supersede what we were trying to accomplish as a unit.”

The 5-foot-7 right-handed pitcher posted a 27-7 record in the circle along with a 0.84 earned-run average this past season, leading the Toros (27-8) to the Division I state tournament loser’s bracket final. Kaff struck out 431 batters and walked just 65 in 216.2 innings pitched to go with 16 shutouts and two no-hitters. At the plate, Kaff batted .310 with two home runs, 18 runs batted in and a .406 onbase percentage. Kaff maintained a 3.65 grade-point average. She volunteered at a homeless shelter, a food bank and the Salvation Army. She also spent her free time as a youth coach and umpire. “It’s a great honor to win for Mountain View,” Kaff said. “To be the first to win this award for Mountain View softball and to represent them for the last time is special.”

Kaff automatically becomes a finalist for the Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year Award, which was not announced by press time. She has signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball on an athletic scholarship at Michigan State University this fall. For 28 years, The Gatorade Company and USA Today High School Sports have honored the nation’s best high school athletes in football, volleyball, cross country, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball and track and field. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade High School Sports Leadership Team in partnership with USA Today, which works with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of veteran prep-sports journalists.

Caring for a Special Needs Child By Tracy House The children are outside swimming and Kim Hansen can share a few minutes of her time. The older children are looking after their younger siblings and it’s quiet in the house that is usually bustling with activity. Hansen sits at her kitchen table, hands crossed in front of her, the raucous squeals of laughter muffled from outside. Hansen’s four biological daughters are on their own, married and starting families, but at home are her nine adopted children, all of whom were drug exposed before coming to live with her. The children have varying degrees of learning disabilities, from minor delays to profound disabilities. Of her nine adopted children, Andrew, who is now 14 years old and going into eighth grade, is the

one Hansen calls her special needs child. “The day to day with him is significant,” she said closing her eyes remembering. She tries to not get teary-eyed every time she talks about his journey. Andrew was 1-week-old when he came to Hansen. She adopted him at 8 months old. Hansen said Andrew was a completely typical baby up until he was 4 years old when he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor on the brain stem called a medulloblastoma, which is related to the drug exposure in utero shortly after conception. Three days after the diagnosis Andrew had surgery. The cancer was on the brain stem and could not be completely removed. As a result, Andrew became disabled.

“When he came out of surgery, nobody realized the severity, nobody—even the surgeon—expected any of this,” Hansen said. “He developed this condition called posterior fossa syndrome, which they thought he would get his speech back but he never has and it’s been 10 years now. Everybody realizes that he’s not ever going to speak.” “Technically he is diagnosed with CP, cerebral palsy, which is injury to the brain,” Hansen Kim Hansen and Andrew take a snack break after said. “And it was injury to his swimming. brain that left him like this. Back to School Know-How: 5 Tips to Save on School Supplies pasta vixen

mom cents

It may feel a bit early, but the truth is that now is the perfect time to start scouting out the back-to-school deals to find what you need so you don’t feel overwhelmed. Here are a few tips to help you save on school supplies. 1. Find out what you can reuse before you start shopping. Backpacks, calculators, rulers, scissors and binders are all items that can last more than one year. 2. Start shopping now for basics. If you don’t already have your school supply list, stock up on the basics (pencils, paper, notebooks, etc.) and wait until you know exactly what you need for all the extras. Insider tip: Not sure you want to visit a bunch of different stores? You can price match the sales at Walmart. Items that are often available to photo page

price match include name-brand items like Sharpie, Crayola, Bic pens and Elmer’s glue. 3. Buy plain and personalize. The simple undecorated school supplies cost less and they are just as effective. You may even find that the store brand is cheaper. But to kids, they may not be as fun, so let them personalize their supplies with stickers, labels and colorful doodles. 4. Take advantage of reward programs. Office supply stores often offer “free after rebate” or “free after rewards” items. By

understanding how each of these programs works, you can pick up name-brand school supplies like pens, paper, highlighters, Sharpies, etc. for just a few pennies after rewards. The drug stores also have reward programs with free or cheap items each week during the backto-school season, so make sure you are checking those ads, too. 5. Shop the loss leaders. Each week the office supply stores and national retailers like Target and Kmart offer school supply loss leaders. These are the penny, 10-cent and “free after rebate” items that help drive traffic to the stores. Try hitting up each of the office supply stores each week and only buying these loss leaders. Come back next month for tips to save on back to school clothes!

buttons of his iPad, his communication device, and hopefully one day type on a keyboard to communicate. His speech therapists help him navigate on his communication device with spelling and typing, to communicate better. Andrew is learning American Sign Language but has difficulty using signs and needs somebody who knows him to interpret. “My goal, my hope is that one day he’ll be able to actually spell words, and even if he could finger point, even if it takes him half an hour for a greeting, that would be such an accomplishment,” Hansen said, taking a deep breath to hold back the tears. They’ve come a long way, Hansen said, but are probably as far as they are going to be able to go with Andrew. For a long time she tried to do it all herself but realized through this lifechanging event she needed to let others help. “It’s very hard to release that responsibility, especially to someone

else,” she said. “As he got a little bit older, for those first several years we always thought he would improve and this would just be a short-term situation and I was always completely and totally hands-on working to get to that point. And then we started crossing that bridge of this might be as good as it gets, as close to back to normal as we’re going to see.” If Hansen has any advice for other mothers who are facing a significant situation, it’s to find somebody who has worked through the system and to connect with someone who can help figure things out. She also mentioned finding good help—respite and habilitation workers, friends or families—you are comfortable with because you do need a break. Hansen doesn’t rest until Andrew is tucked safely in bed each night. “It is 24/7 truly,” she said. Tracy House is a busy AZ Modern Mom of four, freelance writer and former educator. Help develop a love for learning According to Kim Freehan, early childhood specialist for Mesa Public Schools, preparing children for kindergarten is an exciting time. It’s when they grow into independent and enthusiastic learners. Children who develop a curiosity and a desire to figure out how things work, along with an interest in the world of books and language, will do better in their school career. Parents can help their children develop a passion for learning by building confidence in their ability to learn. Exposure to a variety of books will increase children’s language skills and self-expression. Children love words that are unique, and it is fun to experience young learners using them in daily conversations. Can your child speak clearly to express thoughts, feelings and ideas or answer questions about key details in stories? Here are a few activities to stimulate learning in your child. • Select books about real-life people, places and events. Study the pictures together to see how they illustrate the facts. • Passionate readers acquire their love for reading in the home. Help to instill a love for reading by allowing your children to see you read on a daily basis. Remember to read a wide range of magazines, newspapers and books. • Encourage your child to ask questions. Independence and emotional growth One important intricacy to kindergarten success is independence

and emotional growth. The socialemotional growth is a major contributing factor for kindergarten readiness, Freehan said. “If these skills are not developed prior to kindergarten, they may struggle with behavior in groups and with peers.” Children are more likely to be successful if they know how to follow the rules. Can they listen to a story without interrupting? Are they able to cope with changes in schedules? Children will need to make decisions and complete tasks without their parents’ help. Make sure your child is able to master the following independent skills. • Go to the bathroom and wash their hands. • Blow their nose and cover their mouth when they cough. • Open a juice box and insert the straw. • Be able to work buttons, snaps and zippers. • Put belongings in their appropriate place. Each child’s path to success may be different. Have a milestones discussion with your child’s preschool teacher or pediatrician. Keep in mind education is a partnership between school and family; consider having a conversation with the future principal and kindergarten teacher. Remember to trust your instincts, because you know your child best. The most important factor in preparing for kindergarten is to love and nurture your children. Birth Father’s Rights and Obligations in Adoption Pending before the U.S. Supreme Court is a case nicknamed after a young girl that two families are fighting for. “Baby Jessica” lived with her adoptive parents for two years before they suddenly lost custody. The biological father, despite having signed away his parental rights prior to the adoption, gained custody of a child he’d never met due to a federal law offering special considerations for cases involving children of Native Americans. The biological mother is now inadvertently excluded from the daughter she thought she sent to a better life. Although uncommon, this case highlights how dangerous adoption proceedings can be. State law is no different. Arizona law attempts to balance the rights of mothers, fathers and the adoptive parents. Arizona adoption laws are highly technical, however, and the slightest mistakes can result in an irreversible and unintended outcome. For example, in anticipation of an adoption, biological fathers are often sent a “notice of potential birth father” from birth mothers or their attorneys. This can be as simple as a single page, can be mailed to father as young as 15 years

old, and is effective even without his parents knowing. Failure to timely respond within 30 days can result in the permanent and irreversible exclusion of that father from the adoption proceeding. This result is extremely harsh, because it bars a father from objecting to the adoption—even months before the birth occurs. Fathers have an obligation to respond within 30 days and must take additional steps if they object to the adoption. Filing a paternity action is one such step, and can be done before the birth of the child. Registering with the putative father registry is another, but likewise has a short timeframe. In other words, don’t wait to consult an attorney until it is too late. Adoption proceedings are extremely emotional for all parties involved. Adoptive parents need to have finality and assurance that their adoption was handled correctly. Both biological parents and birth parents need to assert their rights to avoid unintended consequences. If you or a loved one have any questions regarding paternity or adoptions in Arizona, contact Rowley, Chapman & Barney.

Scott R. Rowley is a divorce-family law and criminal defense attorney with Rowley Chapman and Barney Ltd. in Mesa. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2007 from Arizona State University and a degree in law in 2010 from the Ohio State University. He can be reached at (480) 833-1113.

Trinity Christian School A Genuine Educational Alternative Educational choices made for a child are some of the most valuable decisions parents can make. Trinity Christian School is a nondenominational, private Christian school that offers something different. Founded by the late Rev. C. Truman Davis, the school’s direction is now under the direction of Headmistress Jean E. Davis with Principal Janet Mattausch and Office Manager Tina Drappo. Trinity Christian sits in a serene desert setting, north of Ellsworth and McKellips roads. Each morning, the school day starts with a half hour chapel service. “Anyone is welcome to attend,” stated Vice President of the Board Don Gaylord. The service includes prayers, hymns, readings from Scripture by the older male students and lessons read by volunteer chaplains. on the town

The school is for children in kindergarten through sixth grade and the teacher to student ratio is a stellar 1:12. During the school day, students partake in phonetic reading, traditional math and Bible instruction along with literature, geography, history and science. Throughout the week, they also do physical education, music and art, with the younger students taking Spanish classes and the older students taking Latin. Each year Trinity Christian students win many awards for their art in the Arizona State Fair competition and they also exhibit at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. Don’t Let Pets Spoil Your Chances Of Getting The Best Price For Your Home While we adore our little furry friends, (I include myself in this pet lover group) home buyers coming into your home don’t always have the same admiration for your pets as you do. We have a hard time imagining the negative attitudes others harbor against pets. So, while this is a hard pill to swallow, if you want to get the top dollar for your house, pay attention to how much you might lose with a dog or cat in the residence. biz spotlight

Why Buyers May Not Like Your Pets • Nervousness—Pets make some people very uncomfortable. Lots of people have a completely different idea of fur and four legs. • Fear—It’s not only dogs that instill fear but because of wives’ tales and superstitions, a lot of people have an irrational fear of cats. • Inexperience—Pets are not always predictable, especially around strangers. Your pets are not the same as their pets… yours may bite, jump, claw, bark, or are just plain hyper and bad! classifieds

The Best Pet Solution The best thing to do to ensure the best price for your home is to relocate your pets while your home is on the market. Putting them in the backyard, in the garage or in another room that you keep locked is insufficient and it’s not fair to them. You need to remove them from the house. Suggestions: • Send them on a vacation—Let a friend or relative care for Fido or Fluff y. • Board them at a kennel. If you choose to ignore the advice of professionals and refuse to move your pets out of the house, then at least

minimize the nuisance factors: • Have your agent inform you of all showings. Prior to appointments, you leave and take your furry friends with you every time there is a showing. • Cat litter and doggie potty pads —Keep them out of sight and impeccably clean. Nothing is a bigger turn off to buyers than opening the door to the laundry room and seeing a full or stinky cat litter box! • Hire professionals to remove the stain from your carpet. Buyers will spot them and have an unfavorable opinion about the rest of the house. If stains can’t be removed, replace the carpet. Bottom Line, remove all signs of pets • No photos of pets on refrigerator, walls or table tops • Put away food and water bowls • Pick up toys and keep them out of sight • Pack up cat trees and other signs of cat paraphernalia • Keep your home smelling fresh and vacuum everyday
