Aptos Adopt-A-Family 2013 is our 20th year providing for families in hardship. Twenty years ago, a local businessman in Aptos was diagnosed with inoperable cancer. As the cancer progressed, he was unable to work or support his family as the holidays approached. Our community put on a huge Spaghetti feed and the money collected went to help his family. County Fair Board to hire Dave Kegebein Dave Kegebein, who left a prosperous business of growing strawberries two years ago to voluntarily take charge of a group of volunteers in managing the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, told the fairgrounds board of directors October 22 that he needs to get back to work, but he’s willing to be employed by the fairgrounds. The Original Downtown Aptos
The development of Aptos has been a topic of debate for many years. Recently, we have seen an increase of activity. The Aptos Blue housing project, built on the historic Vicente Castro property, is nearing completion. The Rancho Del Mar Shopping Center, who celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012, was recently purchased by Safeway who plans on expanding its grocery store and gas station in addition to doing a major remodel of the shopping center. Rancho Del Mar Update The renovation of the Rancho Del Mar Shopping Center is still in the planning stages according to Deb Karbo, Vice President of Development at Safeway’s real estate development subsidiary, Property Development Centers. “We have been listening to the community and have made changes in response to their concerns.”
Safeway has begun a community dialogue about a revised plan for renovating the Rancho del Mar Shopping Center. “We want to assure that residents have direct access to project decision makers,” she said. Karbo will oversee the planning, construction and leasing process. continued on page 4
