“Year in Review” from page 1 The MBSSTN will be approximately 50 miles of planned multi-use bicycle/ pedestrian trails spanning the length of Santa Cruz County and spur trails connecting to neighborhoods, schools, parks, coastal access areas, transit hubs, commercial centers, and existing trails.

The network’s main artery is the 32-mile rail right of way adjacent to the operating rail line (aka “rail trail”) that is planned to provide convenient, active transportation options as it spans the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

Safeway’s plans for the Ranch Del mar Shopping Center have been improved in response to complaints that local small would increase. residents was the discovery that a 40-unit, low-income rental complex called Aptos Blue was being built behind the Community Foundation Building across from the Rancho Del Mar Shopping Center. The original plans called for owner-occupied condos with 40 percent allocated by the developer as lowbought the property and changed the plans to all rental, low-income 1, 2, and 3-bedroom apartment housing. In addition, 5 of the 40 units would be reserved by the Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency for Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) tenants. In spite of the claim that all of this had taken place without the county properly giving notice to all those within 300 feet of the project, there was nothing that could be done to stop or modify the project.

Another surprise was in store for those transmission line that runs through Corralitos and southern Aptos. New lines and larger poles some as high as 100 feet along with the widening of the right of way were being ridor since the 1970s and due to the increased population and increased use of electricity, the increased capacity was necessary.

O’Neill Sea Odyssey’s Program Impacts Youth A pplied Survey Research (ASR) has completed its evaluation of student survey results for O’Neill Sea Odyssey’s (OSO) program for the 2012-13 school year and found that the free, ocean-going science and ecology program

had a high impact on participating youth.

The ASR study measured the results of surveys of students administered before and after the program as well as the results of surveys completed by teachers whose classes participated in the program, and cross-analyzed them against demographic data about the participating schools.

“O’Neill Sea Odyssey serves a vital role in getting students excited about science and about environmental stewardship, and this analysis bears that out,” executive director. The evaluation found that: The student survey showed that the

substantial increases in students’ environmental awareness. Before participating, an average of 79% of students agreed with the survey questions and after, this percentage increased to 97%.

The analysis also found that: Most groups came from Santa Cruz County (41%), Santa Clara County (32%) and Monterey County (22%).

Approximately 96% of groups were of students between 4th and 6th grade, the programs target population. Six percent of students had attended the program previously.

Based on population estimates, 54% of the students were Hispanic or Latino, 25% were White, 13% were Asian, Filipino, American, less than 1% were American Indian or Alaska Native, and 5% were of another race/ethnicity.

It was estimated that 52% of the students attending the OSO program did not have English as their primary language, a slight increase since 2007-08.

More than half (58%) of students were receiving free or reduced price meals, more than ever before.

Besides this one-year snapshot, a study of the long-term impact of the program by San Jose State Master’s candidate Lauren Hanneman has also been completed.

Over 37,000 meals donated to Second Harvest Holiday Food Drive

ponsors, School Leaders and Interact Club members gathered on Monday, December 16 to present their donation to this year’s Second Harvest Holiday Food Drive. The results of all the hard work of the Interact Club were donations of both cash and food amounting to over 37,768 meals.

Club members collected donations for the past two months at Aptos football games, local shopping centers, on campus and in classrooms. Interact Club Advisor and Social Science Teacher Thomas Whitwam put on his game face and challenged other faculty members and administrators to give generously to fortunate.

The Interact club is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Capitola-Aptos whose president Doug Deaver was there to

Bobbie Nelson Loses Battle With Cancer June 18, 1950 ~ December 5, 2013

B

obbie Nelson passed away on December 5, 2013 at her home in Santa Cruz, after a valiant 4-year battle with Cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends. Bobbie is survived by her husband David Nelson and son Marc Nelson of Santa Cruz, mother Zel Longacre Jose. Bobbie was predeceased by her father, Robert Longacre.

Born Bobbie Jo Longacre on June 18, 1950, in Fresno, she moved with her family to Aptos in 1958.

Bobbie graduated Bobbie Nelson from Watsonville High School and then worked retail in downtown Santa Cruz. She was the owner spring of 1989.

Bobbie met her sweet husband and best buddy, Dave “Taz” Nelson in 1979; the two married May 22, 1982. They shared a passion for classic cars, street rods and were part of many streetcar organizations. They both were key organizers of the famous “Beach Street Revival” gatherings in downtown Santa Cruz. Bobbie and Dave’s son Marc was born on May 8, 1983 and was the best blessing ever for the couple.

Is Mandatory Water Rationing Coming for SqCWD Customers?

Sustainable Solutions and Supplemental Water Supplies Major Issues for 2014

anuary 7, 2014 will be the third of a series of board meetings addressing the future of water for the Soquel Creek Water District. The meeting will take place at 7:00 pm at the Capitola City Council Chambers, 420 Capitola Ave, Capitola.

The subject of the January 7 board meeting is reducing water demands through mandatory water rationing. That the District is forced to seriously consider such draconian measures as compulsory restriction of water usage, indicates the seriousness of the water situation here in mid-county. Kim Kim Adamson Adamson, general manager Soquel Creek Water District said, “Implementing a full mandatory water rationing plan will have community impacts but we have to consider it as a consequence if we don’t secure a supplemental water supply” Mid-county water for public utilities and private well owners comes from the aquifers beneath us. There are no dams or reservoirs that supply our water for this part of the county; it all comes from wells pumping water out of the ground.

If the fresh water from the aquifers are used faster than it can be replenished by rainfall or other recharging methods, salt water from the ocean starts to invade the aquifer. Eventually some wells may have to be capped because their water is no longer fresh and cannot be used as a water supply for either people or for agriculture.

Since 2007, the SqCWD and the Santa Cruz Water Department (SCWD) have explored the feasibility of using desalinated water from the ocean as a supplemental water supply. During the summer the plant’s water could be used by the SCWD to allow San Lorenzo River to support the wildlife upstream to spawn. During all other times, the output of a desalination plant could be

used by the SqCWD to supply their customers and allow the groundwater supply to naturally recharge with winter rainfall and less groundwater pumping.

Now that the Desal project as a solution to supply this needed supplemental water for both water agencies has come under vigorous attack and may never happen, the search is on by the sources of water to and replenish their precious and limited water resource. exploring other possibilities was held October 15 and presented the possibility of other sources of Desalinated water.

It was estimated that the infrastructure needed to transfer and treat the excess winter surface water would cost about as much as building the Desalination plant. This option was initially developed in 2012 as a last resort plan and was conceptually designed to reduce overall water use by 35% for at least 20 years in the absence of a supplemental water supply solution. the original option as well as proposed address concerns and further explore the feasibility of the mandatory water-rationing plan. The January 7 meeting, to be held at Capitola City Council Chambers (420 Capitola Avenue, Capitola), is open to the public and the District’s Board of Directors welcomes input.

What Is a Good SSAT or ISEE Score?

he SSAT and ISEE are the most commonly used admissions tests that private non-parochial day and boarding schools use to assess a candidate’s readiness to do the work at their schools. The scores on these tests help schools evaluate candidates from a range of schools to understand how they compare to each other. While the ISEE and SSAT are only part of the private school admissions process, which also includes interviews, transcripts, extracurricular activities, and teacher recommendations, they are an important part.

Some schools ask for the SSAT, while others accept the ISEE. Some schools accept both tests, so be sure to check which test or tests the school you are applying to accepts. Schools vary in how much weight they place on these tests, but parents and students often wonder what good ISEE or SSAT scores are and whether their scores are good enough to get into the school of their choice. Here’s an explanation of the scores and what they mean.

What the SSAT Is and How It Is Scored he SSAT is a multiple-choice test given to students around the world in grades 5-12 who are interested in applying to private schools. Students currently in

grades 5-7 take the lower-level test, while students in grades 8-11 take the upper-level test. The SSAT has verbal, quantitative (math), and reading sections and an essay.

Mariners’ Girls Golf Earns Scholastic Honors

“I am so very proud and honored to have coached these girls,” head coach Bill Tsudama said.

“I knew this past year’s team was a Tai Li Harrill special group.”

The upper-level SSATs are scored from 1500-2400 for the total score and from 500-800 for the verbal, quantitative, and reading scores. The test also provides percentiles that show how a test-taker ’s score compares to other students of the same gender and grade who have taken the SSAT in the past three years.

For example, a quantitative percentile of 50% means that you scored the same or better than 50% of the students in your grade and of your gender who took the test in the last three years. The SSAT also provides an estimated national percentile rank for grades 5-9 that show where the student’s scores stand in reference to the national population, and students in grades 7-10 are provided with a predicted 12th grade SAT score.

What the ISEE Measures and How It Is Scored he ISEE has a lower-level test for students currently in grades 4 and 5, a middle-level test for students currently in grades 6 and 7, and an upper-level test for students currently in grades 8 to 11. Sometimes, a student who has low test scores but great teacher recommendations and a mature personality will still be admitted to a competitive school, as some schools recognize that smart kids do not always test well.

It’s also very important to keep in mind that students who take the ISEE or SSAT are compared to other very high-achieving students, and therefore it’s hard to always score in the top percentiles or stanines on these tests. In other words, if a student scores at the 50th percentile on the ISEE or SSAT, he or she is about at the middle of students applying to private school--a group of generally high-achieving kids.

Zesty Chili Style Diced Tomatoes, undrained 1 cup water 1 /2 teaspoon ground cumin Beans, drained Corn Fritters: 1 large egg, beaten 2 /3 cup milk Kernel Corn, drained

or Chili, cook turkey, onion, bell pepper and garlic over medium heat in a large pot for 8 to 10 minutes or until meat is brown and vegetables are tender; drain.

Stir in tomatoes, water and cumin.

Bring to a boil; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in green beans. Serve with Cheesy Corn Fritters.

For Cheesy Corn Fritters, and cheese in a large bowl. Heat oil in a very large skillet over medium heat.

For each fritter, pour about 3 tablespoons of batter into hot skillet. Cook 4 minutes or until golden brown, turning once.**

NOTE: *If desired, substitute 3 cups chopped cooked turkey for cooked ground turkey breast. Add with tomatoes in Step 2. ** Keep cooked fritters warm in a 200°F oven while cooking the remaining fritters.

According to the EIA, increased have recent warmer winters and the recession, but the key driver has been the swapping out of coal at power plants and industrial facilities across the country for cleaner-burning and now more abundant natural gas.

The reason so much natural gas is around is the rise of hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”), a technique whereby drillers inject water and chemicals into underground shale rock deposits to free up otherwise trapped natural gas. Fracking has huge natural gas deposits from the Marcellus Shale in the Northeast and elsewhere. The increased supply has brought natural gas prices down so that it has been cheaper than coal during the last few years. Our carbon natural gas to generate electricity generates about half the carbon emissions of coal for every megawatt hour of power generated.

Always a Lady

ound roaming the streets of Fremont, this Lady didn’t look or feel so lovely. She was disoriented, quite overgrown and limping painfully from multiple foxtails that had embedded themselves deep between her toes.

When the shelter she was in became dangerously over-crowded, this caught a life saving break and came was immediately given a medical groom, removing over 80 foxtails from her feet alone.

Lady came to us in such pain, and a home of her own. In the time we’ve had this sweet girl we’ve been able to see what a lovely little with her person as much as possible and will make a superb sidekick for someone who’s missing that constant companionship. She loves to be held, touched, cuddled, and talked to. However, when you’re occupied, she doesn’t mind just sitting right beside you patiently.

In the home, Lady has been described by her foster as “perfectly housetrained” and “totally crate-trained.“ She does like to be on the couch and on the bed and would be most happy in a home where she would be allowed this luxury. Lady is not the type to run away, she comes when called and will follow you wherever you may go.

Because she is still a relatively young dog, she will need walks twice daily. She walks nicely on the leash, has been taken to the beach and dog parks by a foster mom, and politely met new people and dogs without a problem. She does seem much more comfortable in the presence of female humans rather than males. It’s love if she is in a home with a guy.

She is very smart and very treat motivated, which will be quite helpful with any training that may need to be done. Lady is about 13 pounds with long legs and an adorable under bite. It‘s very important to be aware of the grooming needs

Saving Mr. Banks — A Review

ake one of the world’s most creative men and one of the world’s most exasperating women, put them together, and you have the makings of an interesting and entertaining movie.

The movie in a nutshell is about how the author, Travers, came to create her most famous and magical character; how the consummate imagineer, Disney, saw rounded her with his own brand of magic.

Obviously, the movie was made but it childhood to make it come to pass.
