Local Church Makes Triple Play!

The members of Twin Lakes Church in Aptos, California have were asked to support with their donations and pledges.

On Sunday December 1, Pastor René Schlaepfer announced that church members have provided food

and donations equivalent to over 1,000,000 meals in their response to Second Harvest’s annual Holiday Food Drive.

The food donated to Second Harvest actually amounted to 28 percent more than their record-breaking 2012 Food Drive. ... continued on page 4

“It’s astounding,” remarked Willy Eliot-McCrea, director of Second Harvest.

“To put what this church has done into perspective: This year the Subway chain is donating one million meals to Feeding America, the national food bank organization. That’s awesome. But that’s the biggest food chain in the world. The same Aptos.”

This amazing response took place that the congregation had been asked to consider in their giving during the church’s 2020 Vision Building Campaign. The Campaign asked for monetary pledges from the members of Twin Lakes Church to fund

a financial pledge to completely fund the community service center at Little Flock Children’s Home near Chennai, India, which will include a medical clinic, library, vocational training class-

rooms, and more. Little Flock Children’s Home is where orphaned children can receive shelter, food, medical treatment and educational opportunities. In India, there are more than 2 million orphans child who comes to live at Little Flock is a child who is rescued from a life of grinding poverty or exploitation.

and middle school to adult classes. The Twin Lakes 2020 Vision consists of a new building for elementary school age children, a new building for the college dings and memorials and converting the present gym to classrooms for middle school.

According to senior pastor René Schlaepfer, “This is the biggest goal we’ve ever added up to over $10 million dollars in pledges that we were hoping and praying for. I honestly did not know if we would be able to do it, but we all thought this was a worthy goal.”

For seven weeks, the church held the pledge drive. Last Sunday it was announced that church members had donated and pledged funds totaling $10,380,000, which enabled the church to meet its 2020 Vision goals. Even the children and young people got involved by donating over $10,000 collected in their piggy banks and Pringle cans.

Pastor Schlaepfer said, “All three has lavished on us to others.”

3,200 Signatures Submitted on December 9 To Place “Naming of Public Places” on Ballot

The petition is in response to an uproar that arose when in 2010 then-Mayor they enact a name change for Watsonville Plaza to “Watsonville Dolores Huerta City Plaza.” The controversy caused the city council to table the proposal but left it with any ordinance.

The new procedure would mandate that when the city is seeking to name public places such as plazas, parks, bridges, buildings etc., that each City Council member would be able to nominate a name. The choices would then go on the next election’s ballot and the name receiving the highest number of votes would then win.

“Local politics is important; let the people vote,” said Citizens Group member, Carlos Rico who turned in the 3,200 petition “We had until January,” said Rico, “But we only needed 1,600 signatures so we were able to turn these in early; the day before the

“This also means that this initiative can go on the June 3, 2014 primary ballot saving $80,000 that would be the cost of a special election such as for Proposition T. Pearl Harbor Survivors: Our Local Heroes Remember

n remembrance of what President Roosevelt called that “dastardly attack” 72 years ago on Sunday, December 7, 1941, on the US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii by the Japanese Empire, thirty-nine people gathered in Watsonville’s California Grill at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2013, to honor three local survivors: James Ford, 93, Howard Trotno, 96, and Frank Myers, 93. Also there to share memories of that day were two people who had been children of navy personnel at Pearl Harbor, retired local teacher Esther Jessee, and Art Lee, retired navy commander of aircraft maintenance.

Since 2009, the group’s master of ceremonies has been Rev. Glenn Johnson, a retired Santa Cruz Lutheran pastor. Pastor Johnson took over from long-time leader Rev. Eric Sorenson, when he could no longer participate. Pastor Sorenson had served on the USS Patterson, a destroyer

escort that was at Pearl Harbor during the attack but survived undamaged. Ingrid Larson, Pastor Sorenson’s daughter, and her husband, Bill, an Air Force maintenance test pilot, were also present.

The program began with a call to order, the pledge of allegiance, and a popular song about Pearl Harbor during World War II: “Let’s remember Pearl Harbor, as we go to meet the foe, Let’s remember Pearl Harbor as we did the Alamo.

We will always remember how they died to set us free Let’s remember Pearl Harbor and push on to victory!”

In remembrance of the 2400 individuals who gave their lives on that day, there was a moment of silence.

“Ships and Stations” introduced the three navy survivors.

James Ford served on the USS Rear Admiral William L. Calhoun, Comship and troop transport. He and his wife, Ruth, came with son Jon, grandsons Shaun, Josh and Joel, great-grandson Skyler and two beautiful great granddaughters Amelia and Amiranthia. Amelia voiced her opinion that even though her “Grandpa was really old, he was the best grandpa that anybody ever had!”

Howard Trotno served on the USS Hulbert, a destroyer converted to carry fuel. He and his fellow sailors were belowdecks waiting for their breakfast when the attack started. He recalled saying, “The hell with the Japs, let’s eat our breakfast.” He and wife Edith have been married 68 years.

Frank Myers was stationed on the Battleship USS Maryland, which took two men in the attack. But they managed to shoot down at least two Japanese airplanes and took aboard many of the survivors of

The Cobbler’s Tale Based on a short story by Leo Tolstoy

O

nce upon a time there was a cobbler, a good and honorable man. One Christmas Eve he dreamed that the next day, on Christmas, Christ was coming to his humble shop.

Christmas morning he got up early and went to the woods to gather green boughs to decorate his shop for so great a Guest.

All morning he waited, then a feeble old man came to his door asking to rest.

The cobbler invited him in to sit and rest tea and cakes. When he left, the cobbler gave him a package of his best bread and meat.

The day became afternoon. He saw a wounded soldier; his feet wrapped in bloody rags, limping slowly down the street. The cobbler called and invited him into his shop. He bathed the soldier’s feet, wrapping them in clean cloth. He then gave the grateful soldier the sturdiest shoes in the shop. When the soldier left, there was a new strength in his step.

As evening approached, the cobbler became discouraged. Just then a young

woman walked by shivering and crying, carrying a baby in her arms. The cobbler called to her asking what was wrong.

“Oh, sir,” she said, “My husband died of the fever so I couldn’t pay the rent. The landlord put us out of our home and I’m traveling to the next town to stay with my husband’s parents. But it’s so far, I’m so hungry, and my baby is so cold.”

The cobbler brought her in to share his dinner with her. He took the woolen cape and the blankets he had set aside for the Christ and gave them to the woman to keep her and the baby warm. Then, he hitched up his horse and cart and drove the woman to the next town.

It was very late and Christmas was he had missed the Christ he cried out, “Why, Lord? Why did you not come? Was I so unworthy?”

He sank to his knees in tears. Then it seemed he heard a Voice, sweeter than any other: “My child, I kept my word.

“We’ve grown so much the last year,” senior quarterback Alex Joh said. “That is, by far, the best game I’ve ever played in my life. It feels amazing. It’s the best feeling I’ve ever felt.”

Art comes from a long line of navy personnel, including his uncle, John Rutherford, who at the time was in charge of the Pearl Harbor ammunition depot. He recalls how the USS Pyro, an ammunition ship, was hit (“straddled� to use his word) - dropping bombs on each side. Luckily, one hit the water; the other went through back at the enemy and was credited with damaging one Japanese plane.

Although not at Pearl Harbor, army veteran Ray Burgess was wounded in Europe at the Battle of the Bulge and awarded a half-dozen of medals for valor.

He has been volunteering in schools teaching the kids about WWII. Joe Myers, like Ray, a Purple Heart and Bronze Star

recipient, has been writing history for a local newspaper for some years.

There were many other stories including one related by an older lady who thanked the “greatest generation� for saving the world, particularly saving Germany from Hitler where she and her family lived at the time and were fortunate to be allowed to emigrate to the U.S. after the war.

The group meets four times each September, and, of course, each December 7th. The national Pearl Harbor survivors group disbanded some time ago due to County and Monterey County group vivors-at-Large.� Since 2009, the person in charge of communications has been Alice Weigel, who got interested in the group because of a friend who was the daughter of a survivor. She attended a meeting and was invited by Pastor Eric to get involved.

To end the event, Alice told us that a wonderful person by the name of Daniel sonville had picked up the tab for the whole group! Thank you, Daniel!

Dangerous driving behaviors could make December most dangerous month ever

otorists not only need to exhibit extra caution while encountering treacherous road surfaces and reduced visibility during the weeks ahead, they also need to stay on high alert for four dangerous driving behaviors, which he says make December one of the most dangerous months for motorists.

“When accompanied by poor road conditions, these four dangerous behindthe-wheel behaviors combine into a perfect storm of risk for drivers,” says Driving safety expert Doug Horn, founder of the driving safety program “Drive by Example.”

‘Drawing Us Together’

Friends Outside Art Exhibit Shows the Stories and Struggles of the Incarcerated

Friends Outside, a program of the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County that provides volunteer-based mentoring and immediate-needs services for the incarcerated and recently released, helped Pedro begin taking the steps he needed to build stability.

A Friends Outside volunteer re-entry advocate worked with Pedro to devise a list of goals, apply for food stamps, meet his immediate needs for food, clothing additionally helped he and his wife enroll in Cabrillo College. Pedro came back and often brought his entire family to his appointments.

Nearly a year later, both he and his

wife are full time students, and working part-time to further support their

developed new parenting skills that have helped him to develop tighter bonds with his family.

In his free time between work, family and school, he has been maintaining his love for drawing and he has set the longterm goal to attend an art school in San Francisco.

Pedro represents exactly the kind of success in reducing the recidivism rate that Friends Outside aims for. For more than 30 years Friends Outside has worked closely structures needed for a successful re-entry back into the community.

Leveraging extensive volunteer support, Friends Outside provides individuals facing re-entry with a range of tools, from transportation services and resume building to more intensive case management and counseling. Last year

Over the years, many clients and family members have shared their artwork with Friends Outside volunteers. The initial idea for an art exhibit came from volunteers who were particularly compelled by the artwork they were seeing from clients.

“For some clients art serves as means to escape from the harsh realities they are facing and for others it is an opportunity to communicate and connect with family members where words can’t suffice,” explains Adams. “Many of the art pieces in our exhibit were given as gifts to their loved ones, accompanied by letters of affection written to the family members, especially touching are the letters written to children.”

Pedro will among the artists to have work on display and he looks forward to sharing, what has been up until now, a very private experience for him.

“I use artwork as an escape.” Said Pedro, “It is a very calming experience that allows me to showcase my love for my wife and children.”

The pair are a tad short, so Liam also sells his favorite books to make up the difference. The children make the purchase and now the solitary white cow has a companion to share the empty yard with.

But on Christmas Eve, an even a bigger surprise awaits not only the white cow and her new friend but also the entire family.

As you all are very aware, the first part of December has been COLD. What you may not be aware of is the increase in home fires we have seen locally and across the Monterey Bay area.

As soon as you put this paper down please go around and check to make sure there are no combustible materials near your heating appliances and be extra careful if using portable heaters and follow the manufacturer ’s operpeople we serve but we would prefer to do it at events like the tree lighting, public education events or if you see us out shopping in the grocery store – but not at your home while it is on fire! Please be extra careful during these cold times.

dumpster donated by Greenwaste and were able to protect the creek from trash and other items before the rainy season.

Aegis of Aptos donated lights and cookies for the annual Aptos holiday tree lighting and chartered and holiday cheer provided by local churches and community groups. The residents are making the cookies for the celebration. In addition, this event collected gifts for Toys for Tots and food for Second Harvest Food Bank.
