Two Successful Petition Drives Building on the success of a non-partisan citizens group collecting signatures for the right of Watsonville citizens to name public places, two more petitions were turned in by the group on January 8 with over 4,000 signatures for each petition. The number of valid signatures needed to put a charter amendment on

the ballot is just over 2,400 but with a 1,600-signature surplus, it seems assured that all three could be on the June ballot.

Judy Doering-Nielson, a former Watsonville mayor said, “I’m glad we took this on and were successful in getting well over the 15 percent of registered voters necessary to get them on the ballot. However, the city council can put any measure on the ballot they want to with a simple majority vote of the council whereas citizens are forced to go through this very labor intensive, complex process to get the same result.”

Mayoral Appointment Charter Amendment his petition involves mayoral appointments. This would be a charter amendment to repeal the current system of selecting the next mayor and vice mayor by a council vote. The new system would have the offices of mayor and vice mayor rotate among the council members. The mayor and vice mayor would serve for one-year terms by district number (1-7) affirmed by a vote of the council. If passed by a vote of the people, the first rotation would start with the mayor being from District 7 and the vice-mayor (to be the next mayor in rotation) from District 1.

Water Crisis Coming ... Actually, it’s Here!

ithout a supplemental supply of water, mandatory water rationing is coming. That is the message being given by the Soquel Creek Water District (SqCWD). “First of all we have to get everyone on board,” said Kim Adamson, General manager of the SqCWD, “No matter what the solution, whether it’s rationing, or desal, or recycling water, or water transfers, it’s going to cost money and that means raising the rates.”

According to Melanie Schumacher, scwd2 Public Outreach Coordinator, “Even rationing costs money. In order to get people to reduce usage there will be rebate programs for more water efficient technology, which includes not just in-home appliances but also replanting lawns and gardens with drought resistant foliage. Rates will go up because the more water is saved, the more each unit of water used costs because we still have to maintain and improve the infrastructure; that is the pipes, pumps, water treatment and storage facilities.”

In order to save enough water without additional sources, SqCWD customers would have to reduce their water usage by 35 percent for the next 20 years according to the district. That also means that a moratorium on addition water usage (i.e. no new customers or significant increases by current customers) would have to be put into effect at some time.

This lack of additional water would

bring any economic development in midcounty, which includes Capitola east of 41st Ave., to an indefinite halt and would greatly affect the business community especially the visitor industry.

“As of January 1 we have gone to monthly billing,” said Adamson, “This helps keep more timely track of water usage for our customers to catch any problems. Our tiered rates encourage our customers to use less water while those who use more, pay more for their water.

Unfortunately, people normally use more water during a drought. To reduce water usage and to recharge the aquifer, we need rain.”

Adamson, said, “The district uses just half of the water currently being pumped out of these aquifers. Private well owners are using the other half, which includes Cabrillo College and Seascape Golf Course.

We have invited about 40 of the larger private well owners to a meeting to discuss the situation we all find ourselves in – that of how to reduce usage and discuss what other alternatives we have.”

After years of overdrafting by both public and private water users of the aquifers that provide water for the mid-county, the district has been trying to find a supplemental supply so they could reduce pumping and allow the aquifers to be recharged. Desalination seemed to be the answer in partnership with the Santa Cruz Water Department (SCWD).

The plan was for the SCWD to use desal water during the dry part of the

year and for the SqCWD to use water to supplement their supply so they could reduce pumping water from the aquifers.

Then came the outcry against desal water in the city of Santa Cruz and the removal of the desal plan from serious consideration for the immediate future.

Now that a desal plant run in partnership with the city of Santa Cruz seems a dead issue, what other supplemental supplies seem possible?

The district is holding a series of meetings to inform the public on what alternatives they have. The first meeting covered the issue of getting water from another desal water provider or building its own desal facility.

The second meeting discussed water transfers from the SCWD but this seems impractical in light of the current drought and the federal government’s concern that stream flows be kept larger to promote salmon and steelhead population growth.

The third meeting on January 7 was about water rationing.

The fourth meeting will be at 7 p.m. on February 4 in the Capitola City Council Chambers 420 Capitola Avenue and will consider the subject of recycling water. Currently the state does not allow recycling water for human consumption but according to Schumacher, the technology is similar to desalination but doesn’t require as much energy as the desal process does. And with all of California experiencing drought conditions, the rules may change to allow using recycled water as a supplemental water supply.

As the need for water will not go away and the drought continues, the water crisis is definitely here. n

Increase in Flu Activity Reported

State Health Officer Urges Flu Vaccination Before Peak Season SACRAMENTO — Dr. Ron Chapman, director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and state health officer, says while we are seeing an increase in flu activity in California, it is not an unexpected increase, nor is it too late to get vaccinated against the flu.

“California is seeing an accelerated increase in flu activity over the past few weeks,” said Dr. Chapman. “You can help prevent further spread of the flu by getting a flu shot.”

While influenza activity varies from year to year and is unpredictable, California generally sees an increase in cases in late December or early January and it often peaks in February or March. Currently, there are more hospitalizations at this point than expected, based on historical trends.

For the most recent reporting period, there have been seven confirmed influenza deaths in persons under 65 years of age reported to CDPH. Influenza deaths in

persons 65 years of age and older are not reportable in California. The H1N1 strain appears to be the predominant strain so far this flu season and is one that is contained in the current flu vaccine.

“The best defense against the flu is getting vaccinated. This year’s vaccine is an excellent match against this year’s influenza strains,” Dr. Chapman says. “There is no shortage of vaccine in California and it is not too late to get vaccinated. Our flu season may not peak for several more weeks, so I encourage everyone to get vaccinated to protect not only themselves, but those with whom

they come into contact.”

Vaccination is recommended for everyone over six months old, but is particularly important for those persons at higher risk of severe influenza, like pregnant women, an obese person and persons with certain underlying medical conditions.

Dr. Chapman also notes that in addition to getting vaccinated, it’s important to practice good hand washing and other good health habits. People who are ill should take actions to stop the spread of germs such as: • While sick, limit contact with others

• Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based rub • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth Those at highest risk — the elderly, pregnant women, infants, or those with other health conditions — who show flu symptoms should contact their physician immediately in order to get the most effective treatment.

Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and fatigue.

Highway 1 everal major projects reached completion or major milestones in 2013 according to SCCRTC Executive Director George Dondero. The major undertaking that was on everyone’s radar was the Hwy 1 Soquel/Morrissey Project. “It came in under budget and on time,” said Dondero, “It was the first project of this magnitude that the SCCRTC took on the task of project manager. Usually Caltrans takes on this responsibility.”

Dondero was surprised by the community’s response to the official opening of the new La Fonda Bridge over highway 1, which was a major part of the project. “We knew it would be a big inconvenience especially for school kids and their parents with a major school at either George Dondero end, Harbor High School and Delaveaga Elementary School.

We arranged for shuttle buses, ridesharing and even bicycle trailers. When we had the grand reopening, we figured on several dozen people showing up but there were over 500 people there to celebrate the event.

There was also a cake but not a crumb was left when it was all over. And the people were great. They appreciated what we had to deal with during the construction.”

January 2014 is National Mentoring Month

Mentors Needed for Big Brothers Big Sisters in Santa Cruz County Santa Cruz — In honor of the 12th Annual National Mentoring Month, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz County is calling for volunteers to mentor children in the local community. January has been designated as National Mentoring Month by the standing President since 2002.

In a press release, President Obama stated: “In every corner of our Nation,

mentors push our next generation to shape their ambitions, set a positive course, and achieve their boundless potential. During National Mentoring Month, we celebrate everyone who teaches, inspires and guides young Americans as they reach for their dreams.

Mentors help children build confidence, gain knowledge and develop the strength of character to succeed inside and outside of the classroom. Anyone can be a mentor, and every child should have the chance to be a mentee. Young people with mentors have better attendance in school, higher self-esteem, a greater chance of pursuing higher education, and a reduced risk of substance abuse.”

For Marie Cubillas, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz County, the need for caring adult mentors for children in the community hits home.

Big Brothers Big Sisters, the oldest and largest youth mentoring organization in

the United States, matches quality mentors with children primarily from single parent and low-income homes. In Santa Cruz County, more than half of children will spend part of their lives in single parent homes, and many families will struggle with the high costs of living. The agency will serve over 300 children in the county this year.

“Currently we have over 70 children on our waiting list for a Big Brother or Big Sister, and the list continues to grow,” said Cubillas. “We want to urge individuals interested in becoming a mentor to contact us today. Your time and friendship will give a child the self confidence needed to move forward in spite of life’s challenges, to accomplish their dreams and goals.”

This year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz County celebrates its 32nd anniversary, providing mentoring services to children in the county. Since 1982, the agency has served nearly 5,000 children. n

Santa Cruz SPCA and Goodwill are Turning Unwanted Items Into Cash For Animals Santa Cruz — For the second year in a row, Santa Cruz SPCA is partnering up with Goodwill Industries of Santa Cruz County to ask residents for their unwanted items during a three day donation drive that will raise funds

for the non-profit animal shelter.

The event starts on Friday, January 31 and runs through the three day weekend to February 2. The public is invited to bring gently used household items such as clothing, shoes, accessories, small house wares and electronics to the Walgreens parking lot on Soquel Avenue during the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day. Volunteers will help load all items into the 28-foot trailer provided by Goodwill. Every filled trailer will generate $1,000 for the Santa Cruz SPCA. Items will also be happily accepted at the shelter location, 2685 Chanticleer Avenue, before the event date and will be added to the trailer at the appropriate time by SPCA staff and volunteers.

Last year, residents were able to fill over two trailers, which resulted in a check for over $2,000 from Goodwill Industries.

This year, the SPCA hopes to fill at least

one whole trailer a day.

“This is an extremely generous gesture from one fellow non-profit organization to another and we sincerely appreciate the Goodwill, pun intended,” said Lisa Carter, the director of the Santa Cruz SPCA. Pebble Pro-Am hails changes to historic tourney Story and Photos By Jon Chown

PEBBLE BEACH — Lots of changes are in store for the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am this year, said Steve John, CEO of the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, and golf fans are going to be impressed.

A new vendor for the event, which begins Feb. 3, will bring a new look, with new seating areas, a new grand entrance, and more fun everywhere.

“The 18th green will look like a stadium when you come down,” John said Thursday. “The tournament needed to go to the next level. … You’ll notice it. It was expensive, but it will pay off in the long term.”

John said the celebrity list is the strongest ever, with past favorites like movie stars Ray Romano, Andy Garcia and ESPN host Chris Berman already confirmed, plus athletes such as NFL quarterbacks Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers and many others. John said he was especially excited to have Kid Rock on board, who has been playing golf lately with Tiger Woods. John sounded hopeful Woods might join the fun as well.

“We expect a lot of wonderful things,” John said.

John made the announcement during a media event hosted by the Monterey Peninsula Country Club, and with 2103 event champion Brant Snedeker sitting beside him, who called Pebble Beach “a special place.”

“It’s one of my favorite places in the

world,” Snedeker said. “My family has a great time when they come; I have a great time when I come.”

Snedeker said he particularly enjoys playing with the amateurs and the challenging greens. He’s in the peak of his career and has scheduled about two dozen tournaments this year. In 2013, he won two tournaments, finished in the top 10 nine times. He earned more than $5 million and finished third in the FedEx Cup standings.

He credited a new outlook on life — putting his young family first support, not worrying about golf at the end of the day, and a new diet.

Snedeker said he enjoys playing dolls with this 3-year-old girl and doesn’t mind changing his 15-month-old son’s “poopy diapers,” but his diet is no fun at all. “It’s been two months and it’s been a battle,” he said. “I’m a guy who likes to eat things I’m

not supposed to eat.”

Snedeker is one of many of the PGA top golfers that will be competing at this year’s event. The Meaning of “Aptos”

few weeks ago, I received an email from a woman who recently moved to Aptos. As a new resident, she was uncertain on how to correctly pronounce the name of her new town. It seems that no matter how she attempted to pronounce “Aptos,” someone would correct her. She contacted me to see if there was any historical data that could help determine the correct pronunciation.

This wasn’t the first time I’ve been asked this question. Not by a long shot. In fact, the pronunciation of Aptos is one of the two most frequent questions I receive.

The other is, “What does Aptos mean?”

There is no quick and certain answer for either question but let’s start by looking at the meaning of Aptos and then we can look at the pronunciation.

Truth be told, there is no definitive evidence of the true meaning of Aptos.

However, all sources agree that it is derived from an Indian word. In fact, Aptos is one of just three contemporary place names in Santa Cruz County the can be traced back to local Indians. The others are Soquel and Zayante.

One of the most common beliefs is that Aptos means “the meeting of two streams,” “where the waters come together,” or some variation of that phrase. The two bodies of water are known today as Valencia and Aptos Creeks. They come together at a point below today’s Highway 1 overpass at Spreckels Drive, which is in close proximity to the village where the original people of this area lived. In a conversation with Aptos History Museum Director John

Where Aptos and Valencia Creeks come together beneath the Highway 1 overpass at Spreckels Drive Hibble, Anne Bass, (born March 1, 1919 to long-time residents Paul Johnston and Christina Jensen), told, that “meeting of the streams” as the meaning of the word “Aptos” was well known even when she was a child.

On April 8, 1880, the Watsonville Register-Pajaronian printed a clip claiming that Aptos was named after “the last Indian who trod these fields before going to his new, happy hunting ground. Aptos was said to be upwards of 120 years old and the last descendant of the first families of California.”

Alfred Kroeber, an American cultural anthropologist whose work focused on collecting cultural data on western tribes of Native Americans, wrote in 1916 that Aptos might be derived form the Spanish word “apto”, meaning skillful.

There are a few other theories (some more interesting than others) but none of which are true.

Patrick Orozco, an Ohlone who is a contemporary teacher, singer and storyteller, has said that Aptos means, “the people.” He is from a different triblet or subgroup and does not speak the Aptos dialect, (no one does) but he said all American Indian tribe names mean the same thing, “the people.” Aptos may have also been a reference to the geographical location of the people or it might have even been a word to describe the people’s beliefs or tribal identity.

Personally, I believe the meaning of Aptos is a combination of “the people” and “the meeting of two streams.” Patrick Orozco’s explanation is very consistent among the pattern of other Indian tribe names. However, many of the old-timer residents claim that “meeting of two streams” is the true meaning and many of them are not far removed from the first non-Indian residents who would have had first hand experience with the Indians

and their language. As an educated guess, which is only a theory and not to be taken as the absolute truth, I believe “Aptos” translates to “the people who live at the meeting of two streams.”

So now that we know the different theories on the meaning of Aptos, let’s look at how it is pronounced.

The pronunciation of Aptos is debatable between three versions: “aptoss,” “ap-tose,” and “ap-tiss.” The first two pronunciations are more common but some of the old-timers still pronounce it “ap-tiss.” Although most people, including me, pronounce it “ap-toss,” it was first written down by the Spanish and in Español the “o” would be long, favoring the pronunciation, “ap-tose.”

The absence of any documentation, and the uncertainty of the word’s origin, makes it impossible to know for sure the correct pronunciation. So, don’t let anyone convince you that you are saying it wrong… unless you are really butchering it!

I have been asked about the origin and pronunciation of Aptos not only by newcomers but also by long-time local residents. I am always so happy to hear people asking questions and wanting to know more about Aptos. Choosing a Real Estate Agent in a Techno World

he real estate landscape has changed dramatically in the last ten years as technology has brought us a tidal wave of new information sources creating a sea of real estate websites offering property valuations, agent ratings, property information searches and more. Buyers and sellers are riveted to these sites and agents know that. As a means to gain exposure and leads agents are clamoring to Google, Zillow, Trulia, Redfin, and “ Top AGENT” agent referral sites to name a few and paying big dollars to get your business. Some agent referral sites negotiate as much as 30% of an agent’s commission for a listing lead.

Common sense tells you the best agents are not willing to give up 30% of their commission especially after they give the portion due to their brokerage.

They could be working at up to half price. How motivated and what kind of marketing dollars is an agent going to spend when they are working at half price? And remember those dollars are coming out of your hard earned equity.

Equally alarming is the “area specialist.” Upon a recent Internet search, I found three agents claiming to be Santa Cruz County area specialists from Burlingame, Gilroy and Fresno, Yes Fresno!

So the clear message I am sending you is although there is a lot of good information on the Internet, there is an equal amount of garbage.

Be aware of the gimmicks and do your homework when choosing your representation. Relying on what appears to be a fancy, cutting edge real estate site may be easy, but doing a little old fashioned leg work like visiting open houses where you can see them in action and looking for agents with the most signs in your neighborhood might still be a better way. Here are some critical questions to ask your prospective agents.

• What is your experience level as a Real Estate agent?

• How long have you worked in this particular location?

• How many properties have you sold in my area in the last two years?

• How many homes have you sold in my price range and when.

• How many properties do you currently have listed and where are they?

• Are you a full time agent? Do you have another job?

• How would you market my home and what pricing strategies do you recommend and why?

• Do you use professional photographers and offer video as part of your marketing plan.

• What are your pre-listing recommendations and how will this affect my net bottom line.

• Will you be frank and offer consistent feedback on how your marketing campaign is going and whether changes are required? How often can I expect to hear from you?

• Will you give me a detailed marketing plan with samples of the quality of materials I can expect?

• Will you take the time to diligently assist and guide me in completing thorough disclosure documents and review contracts?

You are selling what is probably your largest asset, taking the time to choose the right agent can mean the difference of tens of thousands of dollars and/ or even worse a botched transaction that can mean legal issues.

The best agents in the business have the experience to know how to foresee pitfalls and avoid them. They also need to know how and when to recommend ancillary professional services such as attorneys, accountants, engineers, inspection services etc. so you get the information you need to make wise real estate decisions.

CHP Highlights New Laws Affecting Motorists

SACRAMENTO — With the New Year just around the corner, the California Highway Patrol is reminding motorists of several new laws or changes to existing law that goes into effect in 2014. The following are summaries of some transportationrelated laws that, unless otherwise stated, go into effect on January 1, 2014.

AMBER Alert: Expansion (AB 535, Quirk): This law requires law enforcement to request activation of the AMBER Alerts after receiving a report that a child has been taken abducted by anyone, including a custodial parent or guardian, who may cause serious bodily injury or death to the child.

Bicycles: Passing Distance (AB 1371, Bradford): This law prohibits motorists from passing a bicycle with less than three feet between any part of the vehicle and any part of the bicycle or driver. When three feet is not possible, the motor vehicle must slow to a reasonable and prudent speed and only pass when no danger is present to the bicyclist. Failing to do so can incur a fine, regardless of a collision or not.

This law will go into effect September 16, 2014.

Charter Bus Carriers: Limousines: Emergency Exits (SB 109, Corbett): By January 1st, 2016, every limousine that has been modified or extended to accommodate additional passengers shall have two rear doors and one or two internally removable rear emergency windows. If such modifications occurred on or after July of 2015, these requirements apply immediately after July 1st, 2015. All new limousines manufactured after January 1st, 2015 must meet these requirements as well.

High Occupancy Vehicle Lanes (AB 266 / SB 286, Yee / Blumenfield): Together these laws extend sunset dates for low emission, zero emission vehicles to operate in high occupancy vehicle lanes (HOV) without meeting occupancy requirements

Hit and Run: Statute of Limitations (AB 184, Gatto): This law extends the statute of limitations for hit-and-run collisions in which death or permanent, serious injury was a result. A criminal complaint may be filed within three years of the offense, or one year after the person was initially identified by law enforcement as a suspect in the commission of the offense, which ever comes later, but in no case more

than six years after the offense.

Registration Fees: Vehicle Theft (AB 767, Levine): This law authorizes counties to increase registration fees by $1 for passenger vehicles and $2 for commercial vehicles to fund programs related to vehicle theft crimes in those counties.

Water Agency Welcomes New Director Watsonville — Representing Monterey County, Javier Zamora sat on the dais during his first public meeting on the evening of December 18, 2013, as a board member of the Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency.

Originally from Michoacán, Mexico, Zamora came to the U.S. when he was 21. He spent his first 17 years in southern Javier Zamora California before having enough of what he calls “the corporate life.” Zamora moved north with his family to get back to his farming roots.

Zamora’s father was an adept farmer with a specialty in irrigation. Become a CASA Volunteer Make a Difference for a Child in Foster Care

ourt Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Santa Cruz County seeks adult volunteers to speak up for children in foster care. CASA volunteers are everyday people, trained by CASA and then appointed by judges to advocate for the safety of children who have been removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect. Advocates are fully supported by a staff supervisor and are part of a team that works in the best interest of the child.

There are over a dozen children on casa’s waiting list that desperately need an advocate. You make a positive difference in those children’s lives by becoming a Court Appointed Special Advocate. Next training begins January 30th.

CASA volunteers devote 2-4 hours a week getting to know the child and gathering information from everyone

involved in the child’s case.

he Pajaro Valley Arts Council Gallery is showing over 50 artists in its first show of 2014: Take Aways: Art to Go! The artists are showing smaller, “affordable” pieces in a fundraiser that benefits the gallery itself, the artists who receive their normal gallery price, and the public can become fine arts collectors in one day. The January 15- February 16 exhibition will include an opening reception on Sunday, January 19, 2-4 pm and a closing reception on February 16 from 2-4 pm.

The artists are well known from numerous exhibitions and teaching experiences in Santa Cruz County and beyond.

Others are known from Open Studios, and all artists bring years of expertise and practice in their submissions. The pieces of art include exotic wire sculptures, encaustic (wax), painting, printing, and glasswork-almost any medium possible.

The question “What is Art?” will

be answered in as many artists as are being shown. According to curator Jane Gregorius “Art can be so many different things: a painted photograph, a sculpture made from rusted pieces found in the street, lovely jewelry fit for any person, a

painted landscape that reminds people of places they once knew, a hand printed dog that looks like an old friend. Diversity is one of many descriptions that fit this remarkable exhibition.”

Artists include Lynda Watson, Angela Gleason, Fanne Fernow, Jane Gregorius, Diane Ritch, Jamie Abbott, Bruce Nicholson and many others. Visitors are encouraged to visit and “Take Away” some beautiful art.

eing fit and healthy requires a lot more than lifting weights. Cardiovascular exercises are needed, the proper nutrition is required. As a former pro soccer player, Aptos native Luis Gomez has been a living example of it for many years, so it was only natural that he wound up purchasing the gym he regularly attended, Lifestyle Fitness in Watsonville.

Gomez, who retired from pro soccer after a seven-year career, now spends his time both coaching soccer and a healthier lifestyle by giving personal training sessions as well as leading Boot Camp sessions where individuals draw on the strength of a group to help push themselves. And since Gomez is a high-energy person himself, it follows that he expanded his services into Aptos, at the new Lifestyle Fitness Studio located at 7690 Soquel Ave. High-performance training is for all

ages. Everyone can benefit from a healthier body, explains Gomez.

One of his students is an 82-year-old woman.

“She does the same workout as a woman that is 18 or 55. She understands that half of her friends need wheelchairs or walkers, while she is strong and healthy by doing conventional training, using the right procedures and being consistent,” he said.

Boot Camp sessions are available at the Aptos studio weekdays at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. In Watsonville, they are available Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 a.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:30 a.m., and in the evenings on Tuesdays and Fridays at 6:30 p.m.

“It’s not just for athletes or future athletes, as we age, we need to train to keep our bone density up. A lot of people don’t understand how important this is. The body starts breaking down, bones will break a lot easier, your body becomes fatigued. You can avoid that by working your body up, strengthening your muscles and maintaining better balance,” Gomez said.

Gomez also reaches out to local youth, offering classes in the summer for ages 9-12.

“We try to teach them as

That outreach to youth also extends to the Watsonville Police Athletic League, which trains its young boxers at the gym’s new boxing room.

“We’re trying to help keep kids off the streets,” said Gomez, who has two young boys of his own, ages 10 and 13. “I think that’s the best way to give back to the community is through the youth.”

The 25,000-square foot facility at 25 Penny Lane in Watsonville has the largest heated outdoor pool of any health club in the area, an outdoor Jacuzzi, personal saunas and Jacuzzis, basketball and racquetball courts, a huge variety of exercise equipment, including new Matrix equipment, spin bikes, recumbent bikes, hybrid bikes, stair climbers, free weights, and just about anything you can dream up. It also offers swimming lessons year round through Sea Horse Swim School.

Helping straighten the community – through Orthodontics

t was a busy 2013 for Dr. Nancy Leung, DDS; just a year after opening her Orthodontics practice in Aptos located at 9515 Soquel Drive, she moved her Watsonville office to 56 Penny Lane Suite B and merged her practice with Dr. Jim Jacobson.

“It’s been going well,” she said while taking a break at her Watsonville office.

“Between the two offices (Aptos & Watsonville) we’re open four days a week. A lot of patients like that. They can go between the two offices and sometimes patients will be at one office or another. Quite a few patients that live in Watsonville are going to school in Aptos, so they can choose which office to use depending on their schedule.”

Leung has more than a decade of experience in Orthodontics in such places as Minneapolis, Palo Alto, Southern California, Sacramento, and Santa Cruz County. She earned her doctorate from the University of Southern California, School of Dentistry and then continued her studies and earned a Certificate in Orthodontics and a Masters in Dentistry from the University of Minnesota. In 2007, she opened her own orthodontic office in Watsonville.

She says she loves it here in Santa Cruz County.

“The clean air, the beach and the beautiful weather, we’ve found home,” she said. “We are happy to be here everyday knowing that there is no better place to live.”

Dr. Leung treats adults, teens, and children. Treatments available include full treatment, early child interceptive treatment (Phase I, Phase II), orthognathic surgery cases, adult orthodontic treatment and Invisalign clear aligners. She offers metal braces, ceramic braces, self-ligating brackets and Invisalign.

“We do everything we can to ensure that treatment is comfortable, easy, convenient, and affordable. We also work closely with our patients to find the perfect financial arrangement everyone is comfortable with,” she said.

People visit Dr. Leung for a variety of reasons, not only because they may have crooked teeth but in pursuit of healthy teeth. A misaligned bite can cause wearing and fracturing of healthy teeth and crowded teeth can be difficult to clean resulting in decay and periodontal disease — and more adults are getting braces. They may have wanted treatment as a child, but

didn’t get the opportunity, or they might need them due to new circumstances.

“It’s for various reasons and may not be just for aesthetics,” she said. “Someone may have a tooth that needs to be taken out and they’d be left with a space in their mouth. Sometimes, adults need orthodontic treatment in order to make enough space for veneers, implants, crowns, or bridges,” she said.

However, most of her patients are younger. The recommended age for an orthodontic evaluation according to the American Association of Orthodontists is 7 years old. It’s better to be evaluated early so there are more treatment options available.

She offers free orthodontic examinations so prospective patients can get to know her.

She reviews the patient’s goals and expectations, takes digital photos and performs an examination.

“I like to be thorough, laying it all on the table so people are educated, informed and can visualize the plan. We discuss

my findings, possible treatment options, determine the best time to start treatment, length of treatment, and financial alternatives,” Dr. Leung said.

In south Santa Cruz County the care needed can be difficult for some to afford.

With two young children of her own – one in first grade and another in preschool – Dr. Leung understands. She participates in the “Give Kids a Smile” campaign, donating her time and resources to treat some patients for free. She also visits local schools and teaches dental hygiene. In recognition of her efforts for helping in the community, the Monterey Dental Society awarded her in 2010, “Dentist of the Year.”

“We teach kids how to brush and floss and the importance of dental health. We talk about healthy foods that are good for their teeth and good for their body. Some of these second and third graders have already seen a dentist and get excited about losing their teeth and getting new ones, for others dental health is new to them,” she said.

She is also devoted to the environment.

She uses digital X-rays that emit very low radiation, digital study models and photos, and her offices have an ingenious “chartless” method for individual client record keeping that saves paper.

Developing Creativity Essential in Our Schools

ast month I got the opportunity to listen to a professor by the name of Xhang Zhau. Dr. Zhau is worldrenowned for his comments on educational systems worldwide, especially the Chinese educational system where he was educated as a young child. In his presentation, he drives the point that creativity is a crucial part of the new economy and that though many educational systems around the world may score better in Mathematics or the Sciences than the United States, the United States produces students that are more creative. This creativity, he concludes, is the reason for American economic prosperity.

In his words, the American Talent Show is a great tradition because it encourages students to get in front of their classmates, try something new and get applause for it. In his mind, this represents the greatness of the American system. We reward individuals for being creative and trying something new. Despite China’s improving scores in Math and Science less than 10% of Chinese college graduates work for foreign firms due to their difficulty in “thinking outside of the box.” The arts encourage the type of independent thought and creativity that students need by encouraging students to not only find new ways of looking at things in themselves but to find new ways to express it.

That is, in my opinion, what makes the Arts so important in the classroom.

The importance of Art in education has been well documented and studied.

For example, according to a recent Federal study, students involved in the Arts, regardless of what form, are four times more likely to be highlighted for achievement in academics. Low-income students who are involved in the Arts are twice as likely to graduate from college than those who are not. Students participating in the Arts have higher attendance numbers, lower drop out rates and less disciplinary problems.

What the Arts do is give students a broader

view of the world while at the same time encouraging creativity and problem solving. When a student watches a play or listens to a piece of music that is not of their culture, they are learning; learning from a play written from a different perspective or listening to music that elicits different emotions.

They think about how they can also create such words or music.

While they are learning, they are developing their creative skills. There is almost universal agreement that the Arts are crucial to education – over 92 percent of parents in a recent study thought so – and it is the business community that is speaking most loudly about the importance of the arts in education.

With the change in our economy, an increase in service sector jobs and the loss of manufacturing in our country, creativity, multiple perspectives and problem solving have become crucial skills. These can all be found in Art education. For example, a student learning about painting can see that different individuals bring different perspectives to their work and there is more than one solution to a problem, but many.

Changing the educational system to better deal with the 21st Century workplace, California is changing to what is called the “Common Core” relying less on testing and finding the right answer and focuses instead on a more collaborative approach to education.

The Arts can play a big part in this new system and helping our children. An example would be playing in a band where collaboration produces the right music or in a dance recital where one learns that practice does make perfect. That to be truly successful at anything one must have perseverance. These characteristics are those that the Arts can teach in new and creative ways.

The good news is despite a lack of funding for the arts, local parent groups in the Aptos schools stepped up and helped fund Arts in the classroom. At Rio Del Mar school, for instance, the Parent Alliance raises money in a variety of ways such as the Spring Auction and other fundraisers

to support education and the arts at their school. This enables the school to provide piano and guitar lessons and even have a school band in which kids play at various venues around the county.

Mar Vista and Valencia school also benefit from this kind of parental dedication. Mar Vista is able to provide each teacher up to $620 annually to introduce the Arts in the classroom. This school has an annual showing at Bay Federal of their student’s artwork. Think of how exciting it is for those students when their band plays at a local restaurant or they walk into a local financial institution and see their artwork displayed.

This encourages student involvement and a commitment to their education. I applaud these efforts. Arts are a crucial piece of

the educational process and with the changes our student’s will be asked to undertake, become even more important than in the past.

A recent study noted that 72% of hiring managers say that creativity is the #1 thing that they are looking for in a job candidate. Artistic development is the key to creativity, problem solving and will help to make our students more competitive in the 21st Century. That is why I am advocating for a more balance approach to Arts education at PVUSD and am looking forward to working on the District’s Art plan. This plan not been revisited since 2008 due to funding concerns. Now that funding is starting to be restored, I am committed to make sure that our children benefit through a well-rounded artistic education. The arts will help to foster the required skills needed to compete in the global market place while at the same time building a school and local community that values all that the Arts bring to our quality of life. n

The Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture and the City of Watsonville partnered for the Third Annual Business Walk on September 25. Volunteers including private business people, elected officials, Chamber volunteers, City staff and department heads walked door-todoor asking businesses questions that will help the City and Chamber better understand the state of the economy. This was a great opportunity for community and business representatives to meet and interact with the business community.

ells Fargo Bank hosted the October Mixer. The team at Wells Fargo couldn’t decide on just ONE non-profit to help, so they chose TWO! Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes as well as the Salvation Army received the raffle proceeds from the evening.

e started November with a Women In Business Luncheon. Dr. Laurel Jones, President of Cabrillo College discussed Women In Leadership, how did they get there and what inspired them. Monterey Bay Caterers provided the catering at the Lagoon House at Pajaro Dunes.

Next was our Mixer hosted by Second Harvest Food Bank. The Food Bank serves an abundance of local agencies here in the Pajaro Valley and kicked off its Holiday Food Drive.

Chevrolet of Watsonville held the second mixer of November. Melvin and his crew at Chevrolet were celebrating their 5th Anniversary. Their non-profit selection was Second Harvest Food Bank to assist them in ensuring everyone had a holiday meal.

abobank hosted the December Mixer in the holiday spirit. The office was decorated for the holidays and networking opportunities abounded.

Rabobank selected Soroptimist International of Watsonville as their non-profit of choice to receive the proceeds from the mixer.

On a cold Saturday, a Ribbon Cutting was held for the Train To Christmas Town. Dignitaries and the public were on hand and if you wanted, join in on the train ride and, they served hot chocolate on the train to warm you up from the cold.

The elves were so much fun to watch, the kids were in awe and Santa came too!

To close out our year, the Pajaro Valley Historical Association hosted a Ribbon Cutting for the New Borina Archive with a Holiday Tea and Open House.

CAL FIRE Declares Burn Ban

For Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, portions of Stanislaus, and Western San Joaquin Counties Felton — On December 30, 2013, CAL FIRE suspended all open burning within the State Responsibility Area and Local Responsibility Areas under contract to CAL FIRE in the following counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, portions of Stanislaus, and Western San Joaquin Counties.

Open burning suspensions aid in preventing fires going out of control and significantly reduces the risk and occurrence of large fires. This is especially important, as these counties are currently experiencing record-breaking low rainfall, low humidity, dry fuel moisture levels and increased fire activity. So far in November and December this year in Santa Cruz County alone, out of 31 vegetation fires, we have experienced 15 escaped debris fires. Normal for the same period would be an estimated 5 to 7 vegetation fires alone.

Agriculture, land management, fire training, and other industrial-type burning may proceed if a CAL FIRE official inspects the burn site and issues a special permit to specifically exempt a burn from this ban. Campfires are allowed in designated campgrounds, or in established facilities on private property with permission of the landowner and jurisdictional authority. Persons burning under any special permit must also check with their regional air quality management district for addition regulations and requirements.

CAL FIRE reminds everyone that it is their individual responsibility to use fire safely and to prevent fires. Visit www.

How to Train a Train

By Jason Carter Eaton Illustrated by John Rocco Candlewick Press. $16.99. (Ages 4-8) o you want a pet train? Well, of course you do! Trains make awesome pets – they’re fun, playful, and extremely useful. Lucky for you, this handy guidebook contains everything you need to know to choose, track, and train your very own train.

Ready? Then let’s head out and find some trains!”

Thus begins this amusing picture book that walks the reader through catching and training the sometimes hard to catch train.

First, you’ll find pictures showing different types of train so you’ll know which one you’d like for a pet.

Then there are detailed instructions on how to capture a train. The best method is to use smoke signals and chunks of coal which will help you attract and capture a wild train. (That’s providing you are hunting for a steam engine!)

Once you get your train home, it is time to clean it up, give it a name, and begin training it. If your train is a bit nervous about its new surroundings, try reading it a story or playing some music for it. Once your train trusts you, it is time to teach it some tricks and then trying riding it. It is best to begin in the caboose and then carefully work your way to the engineer’s seat up front.

The big, bold, colorful illustrations in this picture book are as much fun as the text. Any child who loves trains will want to read this book at story time. So… all aboard!

Be sure to pay close attention to all the pictures because they are quite intricate and have lots of interesting detail.

After crossing the vast prairie where buffalo and Indians live, you’ll pass through communities like Grand Island, Cheyenne, Fort Bridger and Ogden.

where the golden spike connected the western and eastern divisions of the line, you’ll chug out onto the flat and desolate Great Basin.

Awaiting you on the other side is the last great obstacle in your path, the Sierra Nevada mountain range. An extra engine or two will be needed to get over Donner Pass and you’ll find snow sheds in the higher elevations to protect the train from the winter snow.

When you reach Sacramento, you’ll see the other passengers leave the train and take other transportation to the cities in California that they are traveling to.

Beautifully illustrated with end covers that feature a large map and a diagram of how a steam engine works, this well designed picture book recaptures the trip west by train. Combining western history with early steam engine travel, “Locomotive” operates on a number of levels and is an excellent read.

Planes Fly!

By George Ella Lyon Illustrated by Mike Wiggins Atheneum. $17.99 (Ages4-8) ny child fascinated by airplanes will enjoy paging through this picture book that features different types of airplanes. The rhymed text begins, “Planes have engines, planes have wings lifted by the air that sings.”

Next are a few early bi-planes and triplanes as well as a streamlined jet.

Besides picturing various types of flying machines, the author also takes the young reader into the cockpit of a passenger jet and up to the tower where planes are controlled as they arrive or depart at the airport.

Seaplanes, firefighting bombers and the president’s plane, Air Force One, are also pictured along with the interior of a big passenger plane and people saying good-bye to the aircraft’s captain as they deplane.

Crossing

By Philip Booth Illustrated by Bagram Ibatoulline Candlewick. $6.99 (Ages 5-9) s a child I can remember “reading box cars” with my grandfather as we sat near a rail line and watched freight trains pass. Those memories resurfaced as I looked through this nostalgic book. Philip Booth’s vintage poem captures the old days as a steam engine pulling a string of cars chugs past a crossing in a small town.

The small child at the crossing is urged to “count the cars” as the train passes. There are B & M, Erie, Wabash, Seaboard and U.P. boxcars, a Frisco gondola, a Pennsy tank car, and a Santa Fe cattle car, plus a Rock Island flatcar loaded with pipe and a string of coal hoppers.

As the small, red caboose rolls into sight, the total is just under 100 hundred cars, which means it was a pretty long wait at the crossing. No matter, though, everyone has had fun counting and identifying all the different cars and railroad insignias.

This prize-winning picture book has become a railroad classic. If you don’t have a copy already, this inexpensive soft cover edition would be a great way of introducing your child or grandchild to the joys of train spotting! n

Volunteers Sought for Education Initiative

SANTA CRUZ — Santa Cruz County’s FosterEd Initiative is seeking volunteers who want to help support the educational

success of students in foster care. Volunteers serve as educational support people, providing guidance and mentoring to the adults involved in the lives of these students. An information session and training for potential volunteers will be held on January 21 and 23 from 6:308:30 pm.

“We are looking for volunteers with experience navigating the school system, for example as parents or teachers, who can help guide others through that process,” said Kim Corneille, Education Liaison for FosterEd. Students in foster care have heartbreakingly poor educational outcomes, including lower grade point averages, graduation

rates, and test scores than their peers.

Former foster youth are significantly less likely to go on to college, and are more likely to experience homelessness, incarceration, and unemployment as adults.

Volunteer Educational Supports can help to change this by working with the adults involved in the lives of foster youth — birth parents, foster parents, and other family members — to provide individualized educational coaching and mentoring and building the adult’s capacity to support the student’s learning.

FosterEd is a project of the National Center for Youth Law that works closely with local agencies and organizations — the Santa Cruz County Office of Education, Human Services Department, Juvenile Court, CASA, and the Parents Center. Over the project’s first year, FosterEd has served approximately 120 students and their families.

“As my own children went through their school years, I had plenty of support from my family, the school, and other parents,” said Sara, who currently serves as an Educational Support. “This is my

chance to give the same kind of support and encouragement to someone who wants and needs it.”

Volunteer Educational Supports are asked to make a time commitment of 1-2 hours per week for at least one year. Specific times and days are flexible. Volunteers must be over age 21, have (at minimum) a high school diploma, and undergo a background check. Reflections on my first year as County Supervisor

s I begin my second year as your County Supervisor, I wanted to reflect on a portion of the things we’ve done this past year. Nearly all of these accomplishments are due to your partnership and communication of your priorities. Here is an overview of the work our office did in 2013: ommunity Meetings: I’ve held 65 open office hours in Aptos, Corralitos and Watsonville and 29 community meetings in Seacliff, La Selva Beach, Aptos, Watsonville and Pajaro Dunes.

In addition, I’ve written over four-dozen columns in local papers and neighborhood newsletters and sent another twelve e-newsletters from our office to communicate with our district about county happenings. ocal Roads: There is no doubt that local roads continue to be a major problem in our district.

Over the last year we were able to resurface and striped San Andreas and Casserly Roads, install a culvert, repaired a bridge and repaired storm damage on Green Valley Road, made improvements on Calabasas Road from Bradford Road to Buena Vista Drive including the creation of curbs, gutters, sidewalks and improved drainage as well as roadway resurfacing and created a new left turn lane at Bradley Elementary in Corralitos.

In addition, we repaired a longneglected rail crossing on Mar Vista Drive in Seacliff and worked to complete the Seacliff village undergrounding documents to begin in 2014 the initial median, streetscape and undergrounding projects from State Park to Broadway.

Our office also worked with the Sanitation District on a project to replace sewer lines (and repave the roads) throughout the Aptos Village area. Lastly, we brought funding for the long-planned Rio Del Mar Roundabout through the Monterey Air Pollution Control District. conomic Vitality and Stability: This year the Board of Supervisors took a significant step toward improving the long-term economic viability of our area. The Board

instituted an Economic Vitality Strategy. Led by the County’s Economic Development Coordinator and the County Administrative Officer, the plan includes a number of changes to simplify and streamline the planning process, making the process for residential and business customers easier.

At this point, about 60 changes have been made to modernize the planning process. In addition, our office has focused on ensuring broadband expansion (in capacity and speed) are part of the plan to significantly modernize Internet capabilities for home businesses, commercial businesses and residential customers.

These policies will increase competition and make Internet part of economic development policy in our County. These policies are now used by the Governor’s Office of Economic and Business Development as a statewide model for local government broadband policy.

Regarding the long-awaited Aptos Village project, I secured nearly $700k in traffic and pedestrian improvements and helped negotiate the final elements of the rail crossings with the rail operator to hopefully allow for groundbreaking later this year. uality of Life: Our district is a special place with an unparalleled quality of life. Over the last year I worked to see through the approval

of the development of a large section of the Nisene-to-Sea trail near Vienna Woods/Cabrillo, set aside $60,000 in funding for permanent restrooms at the Polo Grounds Park and saw the Aptos High practice field through the Planning process and voted in support after working to address neighborhood concerns with PVUSD. In addition, we worked to improve crosswalk and sidewalk safety near Rio Del Mar Elementary and greatly increased speed limit signage to reduce speeding in Rio Del Mar and Seascape areas. As a Library Joint Powers Authority board member, I voted to move forward with a library master plan that would significantly improve the Aptos and Capitola libraries while making improvements to the La Selva Beach branch. oving Forward: We have a lot more to do in 2014 as we face challenges on land use (from the PG&E project to Rancho Del Mar), traffic, economic vitality and the condition of local roads.

Last year we addressed nearly 500 direct requests for service to our office on neighborhood road issues, noise, environmental, public safety and infrastructure concerns – all from emails and calls to us.

ule, a six-year-old Cocker Spaniel, found himself on his own most of the time. He was kept in a bathroom for much of the day, then a neighbor would find Yule roaming the streets after his people would let him out and seemingly forgetting about him. Soon, animal control picked Yule up. That’s how he finally ended up abandoned and completely alone.

Yule was matted, covered in stickers and foxtails with fur hanging down to his nose and covering his eyes y. He would bump into things as though he was blind. He also carried about 15 extra pounds. After being rescued by the Santa Cruz SPCA, Yule’s big beautiful eyes were finally free and he began to thoroughly appreciate his surroundings.

Yule’s attitude toward life has gone from despondent and depressed to joyful and full of life. After losing about six pounds, this adorable fellow is gaining his agility back and can be as playful as a puppy. Now he greets everyone who comes through the doors and parks himself right next to them basking in petting and attention. He absolutely LOVES to go on walks with volunteers, is a regular at our Capitola Mall SPCA Adoption Center, and even starred on our KSCO Pet of the Week radio spot. He wins hearts everywhere he goes with that beautiful cocker gaze.

He gets along wonderfully with other dogs of any size. However, with enough human attention, he could be an only dog. Yule is quiet, calm and well behaved in the house. He seems to be house-trained if taken out for regular potty breaks and is also crate trained at night and enjoys his own safe space. He is still on the large side, around 40 pounds, and needs to lose another ten pounds to be considered a healthy weight.

He does have a few benign fatty tumors on his chest and side related to age, breed, and previous weight that will not go away but are usually not an issue other than cosmetic.

We don’t think a home with toddler age children is appropriate because of sensitivity around his ears. However, when meeting young children, Yule is a complete gentleman. long with our record water shortages, for several years now we’ve been living through a drought of young, local classical keyboard talent who delight in showing the public just how really good they are. This musical shortage ended Saturday evening, January 11, at the Peace United Church of Christ (formerly the First Congregational) in Santa Cruz, when 17-year-old Tyler Hayford, a junior at Pacific Charter School, performed a most satisfying, often brilliant, recital in the music of J. S. Bach, Beethoven, and Rachmaninoff.

In this program, he proved himself a most worthy “successor” to the teen-aged Aaron Miller of Aptos and Chetan Tierra of the San Lorenzo Valley from way back in the 1990s.

The occasion, conceived by Hayford and fellow Pacific Collegiate School students, and sponsored by several individuals such as Vlada Moran, his former piano teacher and current organ instructor, Distinguished Artists Concert Series Director John Orlando, members of the Santa Cruz Chamber Players in honor of celebrating youth alumnus, was a benefit for Typhoon Haiyan Relief, and the event was introduced by Rose Guerrero of the Watsonville Filipino Association, who reminded us of the continuing, urgent need for donations to aid the millions still homeless and without resources since the devastating storm of early November 2013.

Hayford, our prize winning keyboard wizard, now former first chair viola of the Santa Cruz County Youth Orchestra, and also a church organist, opened with a couple Preludes and Fugues from Bach’s Book I of the “Well-Tempered Clavier” (1722) – “No. 16 in G Minor” very introspective, with great delicacy, bringing forth the rich, warm tone of the splendid Yamaha CFX grand (which one pianist likened to “driving with power steering for the first time”), all sounding easy and natural. Then on to “No. 4 in E Flat Major,” a lengthy masterpiece, containing a “Siciliano,” in tribute to French composer Francois Couperin.

The Beethoven four movement “Sonata #15 in D Major, Op. 28 “ (“Pastorale”) had moments of magic, an often witty and

charming character that in Hayford’s hands sprang forth with the freshness of real Spring, as in the composer’s “Pastorale” Symphony.

The second movement’s military march was put across with a childlike innocence.

Movement III “Scherzo” (was) handled by Hayford with ease and humor. The concluding “Rondo” was presented as glorious/ victorious, with majestic flourishes in some of Beethoven’s greatest humor.

The Rachmaninoff “Sonata No. 2 in B Flat Minor, Op. 36” (1931-revised edition) opened with lots of quick and devilishly difficult notes, which were perfectly executed with wonderful pedaling and golden tone in its trademark melting Russian romanticism. Indeed, throughout the piece, with Hayford’s breathtaking ease of execution and fabulous sound production, I thought back to when, in February of 1958, the young Van Cliburn had won the First International Tchaikovsky Competition. I imagined Tyler Hayford in a few years as the winner of this and/or other big piano prizes. Or, like great keyboard artists such as Kissin and Volodos, he could make it big on his own. He’s already that good. My only suggestion is for more audience contact, which will draw in his listeners even more.

Meanwhile, locally, let’s hope that he follows in the now distant footsteps of Aaron Miller and Chetan Tierra, being selected by Music Director Daniel Stewart as piano soloist with the Santa Cruz County Symphony. Tyler Hayford deserves a wider audience. n
