Aptos High has been rocked by the recent suicides of two of its students. The first was Nathan Phillips, a senior, whose body was found in the ocean next to the Cement Ship in Seacliff on December 12, 2013. Now another boy almost three months later, a sophomore at Aptos High, was discovered near the school on February 25 whose death was determined to be by hanging. Full Story on page 6
The Piggie Market: Gone But Not Forgotten
In my last article, I wrote about my daily pilgrimage as a youth from Aptos Junior High School to the Piggie Market located in Redwood Village. Although the article was inspired by my fond memories of after-school adventures at Piggies (as it was commonly referred to), the subject matter quickly turned into the history of Redwood Village. Safeway Inc. Being Sold
On Thursday March 5, Safeway made known that it had agreed to be acquired for over $9 billion by an investment group led by Cerberus Capital Management. If the sale is finalized, Safeway will merge with Albertson’s, the 5th-largest grocer, which Cer-
berus bought from SuperValu last year. Safeway has more than 1,300 stores in the US. However, it is reported that Kroger, the country’s largest grocer (almost twice as large as Safeway by revenue), is considering making its own offer. ... continued on page 4
