Safeway Inc. Being Sold

On Thursday March 5, Safeway made known that it had agreed to be acquired for over $9 billion by an investment group led by Cerberus Capital Management. If the sale is finalized, Safeway will merge with Albertson’s, the 5th-largest grocer, which Cer-

Are The Days of The Conventional Supermarket Numbered? afeway Inc.’s announcement that private equity giant Cerberus Capital Management agreed to buy the 2nd-largest grocer in the US is the latest sign from the grocery industry that supermarkets may be changing. This sale could transform Safeway into a neighborhood grocer that resembles Trader Joe’s, according to some analysts and industry watchers.

Frank Dell, president and chief executive of consulting group Dellmart & Co. and a 30-year industry watcher said, “The supermarket was built on the principle of, if you’re 8 years old to 80, we carry everything in the store for you. I just don’t see bigger as being better anymore.”

Smaller neighborhood markets that promote locally sourced meat, organic produce and try to attract customers with friendly service, and one-of-a-kind items are attracting customers away from traditional supermarkets, experts say. Trader Joe’s continues to earn a loyal following with its private label offerings, its smaller stores and helpful staff. However, these smaller stores have a limited selection compared to the supermarkets.

Safeway also has private-label products, including organics, which comprised an all-time high of 28 percent of total grocery sales last year.

Even Walmart has been downsizing from big-box to neighborhood market stores — about a quarter the size of its Supercenters — which emphasize groceries. With the increased competition from discount retailers, local farmers markets, Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s, it’s estimated that traditional supermarkets have lost 15 percent of the grocery market.

“At one time, the supermarket was the place to shop four times a week,” Dell said.

“Then along came Costco, and along came this little guy named Sam Walton. Then

when I see them open a Trader Joe’s in this town, a line forms around the block.”

If the sale is finalized, some Safeway stores and distribution centers would probably be closed or sold, industry experts say. Karen Short, an analyst with Deutsche Bank, said Cerberus might sell off Safeway stores in Colorado, Texas and Arizona where competitors outperform Safeway.

Kroger, the nation’s largest grocery chain, has outperformed Safeway, Dell said, because it allows each store to tailor its offerings to local shoppers, and stock stores with local brands. Dell said that’s the direction Safeway needs to move in — more gluten-free items in San Francisco stores and more locally made barbecue sauce in Georgia.

Safeway has tried to tailor stores to customer preference, said spokeswoman Teena Massingill, and in 2012 began reorganizing stores to make them easier to shop, placing ingredients in categories and lowering shelves. The company remodeled 177 stores with this new design and expects to complete 200 more this year. n Story by Noel Smith

Now another boy almost three months later, a sophomore at Aptos High, was discovered near the school on February 25 whose death was determined to be by hanging. Counselors were immediately available on campus to help students and teachers cope with the suicide.

“It’s tragic,” said Pajaro Valley Unified School District Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Instruction Murry Schekman. “We are trying to help in any way the District can and our thoughts and prayers are with the family.”

dream of a world where all animals have a home and food. When animals are not adopted soon enough they may never get put down.

I think that all animals should live a long happy life like us. What you can do to help is if you see a lost animal try to feed it and bring it to a shelter. There are some shelters like the A.S.P.C.A that do not put down animals, so if you find a lost animal bring it there. There are also other things you can do to help animals.

Don’t forget: animals help us a lot by keeping us company. If all humans should treated animals how they would want to be treated, we would have a better world. n

Sheriff Stepping Down

Santa Cruz County’s Phil Wowak Not Running for Re-election

I

n an emotional public statement, Sheriff Phil Wowak announced that he would not be running for re-election in November. The official announcement was made on Friday, March 6 in the County Supervisors’ boardroom attended by the media, the sheriffs administrative staff, the head of the other law enforcement agencies in the county and his family.

Here is Sheriff Wowak’s statement: “After a long and emotional deliberation, I have decided that I will not seek re-election for the office of Sheriff-Coroner in the coming election. I will complete my current term and, December 2014 will mark the end of my 32-year career in Santa Cruz law enforcement.

“I would have loved to run for office again but I know in my heart I would not complete another full term. I struggled with the temptation of having my successor appointed to office a few years from now however, our democratic system is designed for its citizens to elect their

Sheriff, not appoint one through political channels. Frankly, running for office with the intent of leaving mid-term goes against my beliefs and I cannot in good conscience make a commitment I won’t keep.

“I am committed to the continuity of leadership of the Sheriff’s Office and feel it is vital to the health of our organization and the community we serve. That is why I will give my full support to Chief Deputy Jim Hart who will soon announce his bid for the office of Sheriff-Coroner. I have prepared Chief Hart for this position; he is extremely capable and, I am certain he will gain the confidence of the voters in the 2014 election. The people of Santa Cruz County want the Sheriff’s Office to continue to make great advancements in public safety, they want a voice in selecting the leader of this organization and, in doing so I am confident they will overwhelmingly choose Jim Hart as our Sheriff.

“I have been honored to be the 25th person to serve as Sheriff of Santa Cruz

County and gaining the trust of our staff and the citizens of Santa Cruz over nearly six years as Sheriff has truly been a privilege. The decision to leave law enforcement has been a difficult one, but the time is right for me to step down. I will retire from this office knowing we have had numerous accomplishments and I am confident the Sheriff’s Office will continue moving forward in a positive manner under the leadership of Chief Hart.

I want to thank the members of our community for allowing me to serve as their Sheriff and, the men and women of our office for giving their very best in serving the citizens of Santa Cruz every day. Finally, I want to express my thanks and love to my wife Christina who has stood by my side my entire career, supporting me every step of the way and to my son, Kyle, for his respect, support and understanding of what it means to be in public service.”

Wowak endorsed Chief Deputy Jim Hart as candidate for what is the first open county sheriff-coroner’s seat in 20 years.

Recent sheriffs have resigned during their term leaving it to the County Supervisors to appoint their designated successors.

The sitting sheriff would then run as an incumbent for the position. Former Sheriff Mark Tracy was the last to win an open seat in 1994 and Tracy’s predecessor, Sheriff Al Noren, won his election in 1974.

Hart grew up in Santa Cruz County.

He is the coach for this year’s very successful girls’ varsity basketball team at Scotts Valley High School for which his daughter, Nadene, plays and is a senior.

Hart described Wowak as a fantastic leader. “He is one of the most organized and dedicated people I’ve worked with. He led the effort to get a new headquarters for the department and has had to deal with the restructuring of the penal system with the state’s Prison Realignment Program.

His are going to be some huge shoes to fill,” Hart said.

The Santa Cruz County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association representing rankand-file deputies is supporting Hart for the upcoming election. n

or children who have a passion for sports, specialty camp experiences with a sports focus can offer a variety of benefits. Regardless of a camp’s specialty area, it is the nature of camp to help children develop into caring, resilient, compassionate, independent people. But especially at sports camp, campers enjoy the community and friendships of peers and role models with similar interests.

They are also able to concentrate on and gain confidence in the sport they love!

Ten percent of ACA-accredited camps offer a targeted sports focus. By comparison, in 2004, only three percent of ACA camps offered a targeted sport focus. That’s more than a threefold increase in ten years. You can even find sports at special needs camps, where the activities are geared to campers’ abilities.

The diversity of camps today reflects the diversity of America — there is a camp for every ability level and interest, from horseback riding to soccer, race car driving to softball. According to ACA’s most recent Sites, Facilities, and Programs Report, ninety-eight percent of responding ACA camps reported offering at least one sport even if sports were not a targeted focus. The Piggie Market: Gone But Not Forgotten

n my last article, I wrote about my daily pilgrimage as a youth from Aptos Junior High School to the Piggie Market located in Redwood Village. Although the article was inspired by my fond memories of afterschool adventures at Piggies (as it was commonly referred to), the subject matter quickly turned into the history of Redwood Village. It dawned on me that Piggie’s story deserved an article of its own.

The Piggie Market opened for business in Redwood Village on June 9 1980 but the beginning of the story actually begins in October 1973. Norm and Mary Ann Kaplan, residents of Los Angeles, were fed up with the smog, heavy traffic, and general hustle-bustle and decided they wanted to have the ocean, trees, and a much simpler lifestyle than what they were experi-

encing. On the advice of their children, who all lived in Northern California, Norm and Mary Ann decided to visit Santa Cruz.

Norm was a controller for a large independent vending machine company.

He was 50 years old and wanted to make a career change. He wanted to operate a food market. It was in his blood and one might even say his destiny. His father, grandfather, brothers and uncles were all in the food business. So their trip to Santa Cruz was not only to find a new place to live but to also find a new career.

Upon arriving in Santa Cruz, Norm purchased the Santa Cruz Sentinel and found an ad in the business section for a small market for sale in Aptos.

Rich’s Farmers Market was located on 9069 Soquel Drive, the building that today sits between Rio Del Mar Mexican and the recently closed Lucky

Dragon restaurant. It was a four-car garage with the doors raised to expose produce stands rolled to the front with five parking spaces that backed out to Soquel Drive. The store was perfect and with the backdrop of redwood trees leading down the gorge to Valencia Creek, it was Norm’s dream location.

Rich Wharton owned the business but not the building. They agreed on $7,000 for the goodwill, inventory, fixtures, and the rights to the lease.

By November 1973, the Kaplan’s were business owners and residents of Aptos.

Although the name “Rich’s Farmers Market” was descriptive, Norm decided it did not fit their personality. Besides that, most folks around town referred to the market as “Pigs” because of a large fiberglass pig on the roof that Rich had installed several years prior. Norm liked the name. Mary Ann, on the other hand, decided it was not in good taste so they compromised and settled on the name “Piggies” or the formal, official name “Piggie Market.” Unfortunately, long before the Kaplans purchased the store, the fiberglass pig went missing.

They solved that problem by having local artist, Bob Eddy, create a new logo featuring the iconic pig in overalls and a checkered shirt.

Success came quickly for Piggies.

There was no Deluxe Foods at the time and shortly after Piggies opened, Safeway went on strike, which gave them a big boost in customers. By 1977, they were starting to have growing pains. The biggest problem was parking.

Traffic on Soquel drive had increased by this time and backing out directly on to

the street was bordering on suicide. It was perfect timing when Tony Oliveira, who in 1974 purchased Redwood Village Lodge and converted the motel to a retail center, approached them to see if they would be interested in relocating Piggies to Redwood Village. All parties agreed it would be mutually beneficial.

However, in 1978, Oliveira decided to sell Redwood Village to Frank and Virginia Booz. Luckily, Frank and Virginia loved the idea of Piggies moving in and decided to proceed with the agreement.

A lease was signed in September 1979 and the construction of their new building began. At 3,000 square feet, it would be twice the size of the original location, built in a hexagonal shape with a cupola on top, and plenty of parking.

But most importantly, customers could head back into traffic on Soquel Drive headfirst.

The Piggie Market had an openhouse reception on June 8 1980 and was officially open in its new location on June 9. The Kaplans retired in 1985 but Piggies continued to operate successfully with its “non-supermarket” business approach of allowing the customer, not management, determine what products should be stocked.

The Piggie Market was an anchor in our community until they closed their doors in 2008. Marianne’s Ice Cream is coming to Seacliff!

T he favorite of generations, Marianne’s Ice Cream is coming to Aptos!

The owners of Marianne’s Ice Cream whose only location until now has been on Ocean Blvd in Santa Cruz will have a second address, 218 State Park Drive in Seacliff, on the corner of Center Avenue and State Park Drive.

Marianne’s owners, Charlie Wilcox and Kelly Dillon as of March 1 took over operation of the Seacliff Center Market from owner Dan Holdren. Wilcox and Dillon bought Marianne’s from longtime owners Sam and Dorothy Lieberman in late 2012. According to Wilcox they has discussed the idea of a second location before Sam died at the age of 84 late in November.

Dorothy attended the hand-off Monday wearing Sam’s trademark suspenders and straw fedora.

Holdren, 62, said he called Marianne’s this last December to let the owners know the property was available. Coincidently

according to Holdren, both buildings, Marianne’s and Seacliff Center Market, were constructed in the same year, 1947.

The new owners plan not only sell their famous ice cream but also other items that those visiting the area might need such as snacks and soft drinks. Wilcox said they indeed had heard the plea from local residents for coffee and some bakery goods and will be offering those also.

Before they can open as Marianne’s they need to improve the plumbing and wiring as well as install freezers, counters, a dishwasher and pass inspection by the county. The new Marianne’s building will retain the iconic red color of the original location. It will also be a boon for the local workforce as Wilcox said they would need two full time and seven to eight part time employees.

The location is ideal due to its proximity to the entrance to Seacliff State Beach, and being close to New Brighton

Caltrans Gives Back Hwy 25B In Hollister

Is the Same Transfer in the Works for Hwy 152 in Watsonville?

SAN BENITO COUNTY — Caltrans has transferred ownership of the two and a half mile section of Highway 25 designated as Hwy 25B that runs through the downtown area in the City of Hollister.

The section begins at the intersection of Highway 25 with Sunnyslope and Tres Pinos roads and continues along Tres Pinos Road, Nash Road, San Benito Street and San Felipe Road to the intersection of Bolsa Road.

The California Transportation Commission (CTC) approved the transfer on January 29, 2014 and this section of highway is now officially under the jurisdiction of the City of Hollister. The state-owned portion of the highway bypasses downtown Hollister as shown on the map.

With this action, the city’s longstanding goal of moving Highway 25 traffic out of its downtown with a bypass is fulfilled.

“This allows the community to achieve their goals while we continue to serve travelers in this part of the county,” said Caltrans District 5 Director Tim Gubbins.

atsonville is known for apples and strawberries but now it has a first class seafood restaurant, the Fish House Bar & Grill. Owner Sal Zavala speaks with pride about his new establishment. “I started in the restaurant business twenty years ago in Monterey.

All that time I’ve been working in seafood restaurants.”

Last May Sal’s dream came true and his family is an integral part of it. His son Xavier, daughter Jessica and nephew Joe are on the staff of The Fish House. “It really is a family enterprise which was part of my dream.”

Looking at the Fish House Bar & Grill menu you will see a variety that you often won’t find. “I didn’t want a restaurant that has dishes designed for those that are just visiting for the day,” said Sal, “I wanted a place for those that really appreciate well selected and well prepared seafood whether it’s fish, oysters, calamari, crab, or even octopus and can serve the best in wines to complement

their meal. The fun part is I get to try out dishes that I like to see how other people like them. We also try to create a distinctive menu and provide a fun atmosphere for my customers’ that will bring them back for more.”

During his years in working in the very exacting and competitive restaurant industry around the Monterey Bay, finding consistently good seafood suppliers is very important to giving your clients the best in freshness and flavor. Sal said, “Seafood is touchy, you have to get good quality, make sure it’s fresh, prepare it properly, and then cook it to perfection to give your customers the best experience.”

of broadband expansion guidelines to the Board of Supervisors with the ultimate goal of ensuring that local businesses and residents have access to competitive high-speed Internet access in ways not seen in our county.

Many home-based businesses, tech entrepreneurs and even medical providers and schools are at a competitive disadvantage because of high-cost and low-speed Internet access.

The Board has now adopted the first set of these policies with the final few policies coming up for adoption in the next few months.

What types of policies has the Board adopted? ere is a list of the four key elements adopted over the past year: 1) Create a dig-once ordinance that allows for placement of conduit during construction projects (when the roads are ripped up we might as well place infrastructure in them).

2) Adopt a new ordinance that more easily allows for the installation or upgrades of broadband infrastructure in the County rights-of-way 3) Establish a broadband master plan to target sections of the county (such as economic vitality areas) for additional broadband infrastructure 4) Create a master lease agreement allowing for the placement of broadband infrastructure on County assets Why do we have to adopt these policies? ven though you wouldn’t know it when you sit in traffic on Highway 1, our county is deemed rural in many state, federal and even business designations. This means that many providers, such as Internet Service Providers (ISPs) believe that our area does not have the urban or population density necessary to greatly expand service or options.

The work we have been doing has been receiving attention throughout the state. The Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development, as well as the state Public Utilities Commission, (PUC) are interested in using Santa Cruz County’s policy as a statewide model.

In addition, our office has been working with representatives of other jurisdictions in the county to attempt to standardize these policies throughout the region. As you can imagine, broadband infrastructure has to pass through multiple jurisdictions to get to our area; therefore it makes sense to have a standard set of policies to help facilitate the process.

There is no question that high-capacity Internet is one of the most effective tools communities have at spurring modern economic development — especially high-paying and green economy type development. The economy of the 21st century is built upon data and information, and a large barrier to economic growth for local governments like Santa Cruz County is the fact that our data infrastructure is outdated.

For a region that rests in the shadow of Silicon Valley, and from which 30,000 people commute (many for technologybased jobs), it is important that we provide the resources necessary to compete.

The Peace Pole and the Helicopter

ne of the first things we saw in January 2014 as we entered the school grounds at Guillermo Ungo in El Salvador was a smashed up American-made helicopter. But opposite the helicopter stood a Peace Pole with messages in Spanish, English, Japanese, French, and Dutch. Lisa Johnson, daughter of Rev. Glenn Johnson and St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church member, was instrumental in installation of the peace pole.

In more parts of the world than we can count, some sort of conflict is going on. So it was in El Salvador until after a bitter 12-year civil war, the Peace Accords were signed in January 1992. Soon after the accords were signed, organizations came from around the world to help the war-torn country.

One of these organizations was Santa Cruz al Salvador, started by Rev. Larry Morkert, former chaplain at Dominican Hospital, his wife Kathleen, and the congregations of Light of Life Lutheran Church of Scotts Valley and St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Santa Cruz. Kent and Christine Madsen from Light of Life, Ruth and Mike Cruddas from St. Stephen’s Lutheran, and Steve Barrett from Good Shepherd of Salinas, were also instrumental in founding the organization and keeping it alive after Rev. Morkert’s death.

In January 2014, Santa Cruz al Salvador celebrated twenty years of “Building Relationships for Better Lives.” Light of Life Lutheran Church in Scotts Valley closed its doors in 2003. The current six member churches: St. Stephen’s Lutheran and Trinity

Presbyterian of Santa Cruz, Lutheran Community Church of Watsonville, Advent Lutheran Church of Morgan Hill, and Christ Lutheran Church of Aptos have continued medical missions to and supporting children’s education at the Ciudadela (Community) Guillermo Ungo in El Salvador twice a year. The November trip is the medical mission; in January, the emphasis is on support of the children’s education.

This year our leaders for the education trip were Ruth Cruddas and Kent Madsen, both from St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Santa Cruz. Unfortunately, Kent’s wife, Christine, was not well enough to travel but thanks to technology, “Christina,” as she is known in El Salvador, sent messages to several Salvadoran friends via electronic tablet.

On Monday, January 6, following a morning of Vacation Bible School-type crafts with the children led by former Christ Lutheran Church of Aptos member Joey Amrhein, and after lunch with the children’s families, we had a peace pole ceremony.

The wise elder of the community, Don Fito, said, “Twenty years ago we started with 57 children and now there are 500 in the Guillermo Ungo area. Due to our scholarships, some have become nurses, teachers and doctors. This would not have been possible without help… I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you do.

Christina’s message yesterday said she has hope and that gives us hope. She is praying for us. We are also praying for Christina.

She talked about how she and I met below a tree many years ago and she has seen the

changes in our community. So thank you all so very, very much and our desire is that her health will get better.”

We sang and danced to “Peace Like a River in My Soul,” (Paz a mi Corazon). Our dancers, Beth Hoch and her daughter, Ada, had us all swaying and dancing with the children.

Don Fito continued: “The helicopter behind us is a symbol of the civil war… We participated in legal elections but electoral fraud won out. The pacifist way and the legal way were used but did not work. For those reasons we took up arms and went into the mountains. We lived below the trees and made our lives there. During the war whenever the helicopters and airplanes saw smoke from our camps in the mountains, they would bomb us. Guerrillas shot down this American-made helicopter in the valley called “Santa Cruz.” Twelve guerrillas went to get the helicopter, brought it back and put it there. It is like a trophy. We always sought out peace and after twelve years of civil war, we signed the peace accords. After the war, the peace pole was installed in front of the helicopter. We have wishes for peace in several languages but we do not have it in our ancestors’ language, Nauhtl.”

Our leader, Ruth Cruddas, said that we would try to discover how to inscribe the peace wishes in the Nauhtl language. She then spoke to the youth, “We really want to thank the youth here. We love your youth.

You, the youth, are present now and you are the future of the people. Take care of yourselves against the drugs and the gangs. This has to be an effort by all of us. Study and take good care of yourselves and love your parents.”

Steve Barrett, long-time Santa Cruz al Salvador Board Member-at-Large, spoke to Don Fito. “Pastor Martir (the area’s pastor) said how much the people appreciate your leadership and what good things you have done in this country. But I want you to know that you have made a difference in the U.S. because it is in large part your love of your people’s spirit and hard work that has made it such a pleasure and honor to come to this country. I think I can speak for all of us in Santa Cruz al Salvador that you have been an inspiration in our lives and we love you very much!”

Don Fito replied, “The words of Steven have made it possible to reflect on the words

of God. God loves children. He created the earth and sky and all of the richness of this world so that his children can enjoy them.

And He gave us love. I think that if we lose this love, we will not be able to fulfill our mission on this planet.”

And when Steven said you have all come from far to visit us, I say that for God there is no language difference, no race difference, there is just love. And that is what inspires us to have this service. ‘Viva La Lehrer’ – Wednesday, April 9

iva La Lehrer! a birthday celebration of the life and songs of Tom Lehrer comes to the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in downtown Santa Cruz, Wednesday, April 9 at 7:00PM. The date marks the humorist’s 86th birthday.

Lehrer, a UCSC Professor Emeritus, has given permission to perform his songs, but he doesn’t sanction the event, nor is he expected to participate.

Among the 18 individual performers are some of the most recognizable names in local comedy, music, theater and politics, including Planet Cruz creator Richard Stockton, Jazz composer Steve Wilson, Shakespeare Santa Cruz veteran Lizz Hodgin, vocalists from the Gold Standard Chorus, and five-time Mayor of Santa Cruz Mike Rotkin.

Also featured will be the debut performance of The Lehrermen, the world’s first

Lehrer-dedicated skiffle band, with Wilson on trombone and vocals, Rick Tacklind on bass and vocals, Olaf Schiappacasse on drums, Dillon Baiocchi on Clarinet, and Peter Nichols on guitar and vocals.

Organizers promise the biggest, most comprehensive retrospective of Lehrer’s unusual blend of academic satire, and sardonic humor since the Broadway musical Tom Foolery in the 1980’s. Watsonville Wetlands Watch & The City of Watsonville

T

he City of Watsonville has constructed over 6 miles of public access trails throughout open space bordering the Watsonville Slough System within the City limits. The City’s Public Works and Utilities Department is currently partnered with the Watsonville Wetlands Watch to support habitat enhancement and restoration activities designed to improve the habitats of the trail system and open space network, as well as improve the trail user and visitor experience. Each year, over 7,000 people visit the City’s Nature Center — a gateway to the trail system, providing an indication of the number of visitors and users of the trails and open space. Likely well over 10,000 people utilize the trail system annually.

What is the Adopt-A-Trail Program? he City of Watsonville in partnership with Watsonville Wetlands Watch has developed an Adopt-A-Trail Program where volunteers can assist with maintaining, enhancing and monitoring the City of Watsonville trails and trail heads. Volunteers will adopt trail sections.

When will it start? he program launched on Feb 1 in honor of World Wetlands Day. We will accept applications from until March 31. Our first volunteer training workshop will be on April 12.

Who can adopt a trail? nyone with an interest in trails and the outdoors is welcome to participate.

Individuals, families, businesses, community and service organizations, churches, schools and scout troops are all examples of volunteers. An adult must accompany participants under 16 years old.

Why should you participate? dopting a trail section provides an opportunity for you to be actively involved in conservation and preservation.

What do volunteers do? dopt-A-Trail volunteers assist trail staff in maintaining trail systems (but will not be asked to perform tasks they are uncomfortable doing). Activities include: • Litter clean-up • Keeping the trail surface free of sticks, rocks and other debris • Pruning small limbs from the trail corridor • Cleaning debris from benches, bridges and stairs • Invasive plant species removal • Assist in restoration events Adopt-A-Trail guidelines A trail section must be adopted for a period of one (1) year and can be renewed annually upon approval of WWW and COW. The WWW/COW Trail Coordinator or volunteer may terminate this agreement at any time.

An Adopt-A-Trail orientation and training will be offered to get groups started. WWW will provide volunteers with guidelines on maintaining their trail section.

Volunteers are asked to maintain the adopted trail section as needed, but a minimum of 6 times a year (approx. every 2 months) is required. You choose the days and times, as long as all work is done during daylight hours and with safety in mind.

Volunteers are asked to provide their own tools, but loaner tools may be available with prior notice. No work shall be done that has not been previously agreed upon.

Dinosaur Rescue!

By Penny Dale Nosy Crow/Candlewick Press. $15.99 (Ages: 2-5) he dinosaurs that appeared in “Dinosaur Dig!” and “Dinosaur Zoom!” by Penny Dale make an encore in this fun picture book that shows these multi-talented creatures playing a new role – manning rescue vehicles.

It all begins when the dinosaur train is chugging along and a truck stalls on the track ahead of the train. The call quickly goes out, “Calling Dinosaur Rescue. Dinosaur Rescue, please come quickly! Help! Help!”

The Dinosaur fire rescue truck and ambulance rush to the scene of the mishap.

The Dinosaur police car races on a road next to the steam engine and the officers try to get the train to stop. In the air, a helicopter hovers over the truck on the track.

“Stop! Stop! Stop!” everyone shouts.

“Hooray!” The train stops just in time.

Now it is time to clear the truck off the tracks and then go back to the Dinosaur Rescue yard where the equipment can be cleaned and then everyone can take a nap!

Big, bold, colorful illustrations of the rescue equipment and the dinosaurs make this a book that will appeal to any youngster who loves trucks and dinosaurs.

Along with hard facts (a T-Rex could weigh up to six tons) the author shares what he dubs “Dino Jokes.”

“What do you call a Tyrannosaurus Rex when he is wearing a cowboy hat and boots? Tyrannosaurus TEX!” Perfect for younger readers who might be a little put off or made uneasy by the more realistic portrayals of dinosaurs, this picture book is not only non-threatening but also a lot of fun. There’s a nice blend of silly humor with solid information which means mom and dad won’t have to worry about nightmares after story time is over!

I’m not sure the rhyme the author uses to present the narrative is a real plus. It may turn off older readers, although younger one’s probably won’t mind that much.

In a school setting, this little picture book can be used to launch a discussion about dinosaurs. The learning activities at the back will engage the child in discussing what has been read and the activities will help expand the topic as well. n

ime for a hearing test. No, not the kind that someone else wants you to get because they think you need hearing aids; this is a more of a “listening” test that can help you be more effective, more confident. This test is not age-related; it’s performance-related.

“It’s not what you say, it’s what people hear.” – Dr. Frank Lutz, author of “Words that Work” This listening test is intended to tune your awareness into the “whole” message, both what’s said and what’s unsaid. Yes, you heard me, the unsaid.

The unsaid, which includes tone of voice and body language, is the part of the message that isn’t said out loud, but is definitely communicated.

Test #1: What do you hear when you read the following statements I’ve heard from different people?

• “Life isn’t fair.”

• “I’m not perfect; I’m only human.”

• “Big organizations are inherently flawed because they are inhabited by human beings.”

What is the whole message being sent by the speaker? What’s the frame of mind of the speaker? What frame of mind do these comments put you into?

Why does “listening” awareness matter?

If we are not aware of how what we say may land and be heard and understood, we are less effective and less connected to others.

Even a 5-year old has experienced the power of words and tone of voice and felt support or suppression. You know there have been times, perhaps too many, when you hoped people heard what you really meant, not what you actually said.

Here’s my point: The more we come believe we are responsible for what we say and aware of how it might be heard, the more we can say what we mean, the more we can build relationships of openness and trust which produce excellent results.

Want to improve your listening?

Here are three actions to take: 1. Recognize your biases. They are only damaging when you don’t know you have them.

2. Know your communication preferences and learn to manage them.

3. Seek feedback. Ask people what they hear you say and don’t argue with them. Knowing how you appear to others is the key to influence and leadership.

If you hear yourself more accurately, you’ll hear others more clearly, too, and you will deliver results that the non-listening crowd can’t.

It’s Cleo’s Time to Shine

leo is a gorgeous 6-year-old Cocker Spaniel mix that was found as a stray on the streets of Bakersfield by the son of an animal rescue enthusiast. Her coat was matted and filthy and you could feel almost every bone in her body. Cleo was kept with her found family as a “foster” for nearly a year until the choice to move Cleo up to the Santa Cruz SPCA to find a true home.

When Cleo arrived, she was withdrawn and depressed. She was not interested in human attention, treats, or animal partnership and curled up in that ball so tight for days as if she hoped to simply disappear. Everything changed one rainy day when a wonderful woman answered our Facebook plea for rainy day overnight “slumber parties” and chose Cleo.

The overnight turned into a foster home and Cleo has made a complete turn around since those first few days. “She’s like a different dog, she eagerly accepts and requests pets and cuddles. She loves to go out for walks, she snuggles in my son’s bed at night and greets us with wags,” says her foster mom. She is reported to be completely housetrained, leash-trained, quiet, playful and extremely well mannered in the home. Each day, it seems Cleo has progressed into a happy, affectionate and well-adjusted dog.
