RESOLUTION FINDING MODIFICATION OF STATE HOUSING LAW BY ORDINANCE 02-16, REASONABLY NECESSARY BECAUSE OF LOCAL CONDITIONS

WHEREAS, Health and Safety Code Section 13869.7 provides that a fire protection district organized under the Bergeson Fire District Law may adopt building standards relating to fire and panic safety that are more stringent than those building standards adopted by the State Fire Marshal and contained in the California Building Standards Code, and;

Second Harvest Food Bank joins Feeding America® Network Food Banks across the Country Promote Hunger Action MonthTM WATSONVILLE — This September Second Harvest Food Bank, together with the Feeding America nationwide network of food banks, will mobilize across all hunger. Hunger Action Month is designed to inspire people to take action and raise awareness of the fact that 48 million Americans, including 15 million children, are food insecure, according to the USDA. In Santa Cruz County more than 55,000 people struggle with hunger and meal. That number includes one in four kids who may not have enough to eat.

This year the Hunger Action Month campaign will focus on the strong connections between hunger and health, asking people to consider how it must feel to live with an empty stomach, which puts a healthy life and a promising future at risk.

“Feeding people in need is about Second Harvest CEO Willy Elliott-McCrea observed. “It’s also about giving people enough of a leg up that they can reach their full potential—especially children, who cannot grow or learn on an empty stomach.”

According to the Feeding America study, Hunger in America 2014, nearly half of households served by the Feeding America network include someone who is in either fair or poor health.

California News National Tuberculosis Screening Recommendations SACRAMENTO — California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Karen Smith today urged health care providers to adopt new recommendations recently announced by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force calling for adults 18 years of age or older who are at increased risk of tuberculosis (TB) to be screened for the disease.

Those considered to be at increased risk of TB include individuals born in countries with elevated rates of the disease and individuals who live in settings with a large number of people, like group homes or homeless shelters.

“I urge health care providers in the state to adopt these new screening recommendations as quickly as possible,” said should work with providers to ensure that today’s new recommendations are implemented. Today’s recommendations, if universally adopted, can help us eliminate TB in California in the next few decades.”

Evidence shows that screening of individuals at increased risk for TB is development of TB disease. TB is a disease

brain. It can be spread through the air from one person to another by coughing, sneezing or speaking.

When TB bacteria actively grow in people and cause symptoms, the condition is known as TB disease and can be deadly.

People with TB disease can infect others. The bacteria can also be inactive, causing no symptoms and held in check by the immune system. This condition is known as latent TB. Elimination of TB in California is possible by detecting and treating latent TB infection before it progresses to infectious TB disease. In California, an estimated 2.4 million people have latent TB infection. In 2015, 2,137 people were diagnosed with TB disease in the state.

recently got the chance to sit in on a rally being held at Rio Del Mar School. What stood out to me besides the excited students is a concept that I was introduced to a few years ago, but is now in full swing at our local schools.

When I was a student I often said or heard others say something along the lines of “Math is not smart in History”. The trouble with statements such as these is that it became an excuse for not doing well.

The good news about this concept is that can be a learned behaviour that one can develop and use no matter where they are in their personal growth. One can learn to change their mind-set and develop their way of thinking. For instance, instead of thinking that a particular

in terms of it taking longer than you originally expected. Or when a mistake is made instead of thinking that somehow one is incompetent view the mistake as a step towards completing the task. This switch in

mind-set opens up a world of opportunity and potential and places the challenge of making change squarely in the hands of the individual. It takes away the excuses that could be used and instead gives people responsibility for their individual success or lack thereof.

The opportunity for our local students with this shift is that they may no longer think that they are somehow not good enough or smart enough to do well in a particular in homework is not an indication that they are not smart. Instead students are being taught with both words and
