POSTER Taylor Reinhold was born and raised in Santa Cruz, California, with his early years in Soquel, and later graduating from Santa Cruz High. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Santa Clara University, he returned home to Santa Cruz. It was then that his art began to blossom. In 2009, Reinhold founded Made Fresh Crew, a collective of artisans ranging in talents from pottery, glass blowing, videography, painting and jewelry making. Since then he has worked to promote creativity amongst the youth through artistic community outreach projects. He has organized and led workshops in multiple nonprofit organizations including Youth Now, Mariposa Arts, and the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History. Reinhold is community-oriented. In 2011, he was granted a National Endowment of the Arts Award to co-curate the first ever Urban Arts Festival in Watsonville, California. The event aimed to educate youth about sustainable art, public murals, and silk screening. Since then, he has taught art and mural classes for Mariposa’s Art and created multiple community-based art projects in the County of Santa Cruz. Perpetually creating, Reinhold currently designs and produces original, handmade clothing and wearable art with fellow skilled artists in the Made Fresh Crew art collective. In addition to producing clothing, Reinhold also enjoys painting and silk screening on objects from the urban landscape, such as recycled spray cans. In 2015, Reinhold spent five months traveling across Latin America while trading mural painting for food and housing. For the past three summers, he created mural installations at

Reinhold has found his calling in painting murals and continues to paint around the Bay Area. He has been contracted to do large scale installations for Burning Man, Plantronics, Comcast, and LinkedIn with a couple more in the works. SAND
SCULPTURE CONTEST
-By Marcia Yallech
Craig French, former Capitola Lifeguard, started the Sand Sculpture Contest in 1971 and since then the sand sculpture contest has been a popular family event at the Begonia Festival. This year will mark its first year of being part of the new Capitola Beach Festival and we look forward to carrying on this tradition at Capitola Beach for years to come. Capitola Sand Sculpture Contest 2018 will be held on Sunday, September 30th. Registration is free of charge and begins at 8am at Capitola beach. Judging will begin at 12 noon with an award ceremony around 1pm. Participants must be present at the award ceremony to win. Sand sculptures are spread along the beach from the Capitola Wharf all the way down to the jetty on

the other side of the beach. You will see all types of sculptures ranging in size and shape. Awards are provided in five categories: small group, large group, one adult one child, 9-14 and under 8 and one overall Grand Prize Winner. The Contest Rules are simple: Display appropriate subject matter on a building space no larger than 20 x 20 feet. Any objects used must be natural (not man-made) material found on a beach, i.e. seaweed, drift wood, shells, pebbles and feathers. Forms may be used in the construction, but must be removed prior to judging. Sponsored by Capitola Self Storage
-by Ernie Tavella
The Fishing Derby joined the Begonia Festival in 1967. From the very beginning, the Fishing Derby captured the imagination of young and old and became a vital part of the Capitola Begonia Festival. The excitement of landing a fish, no matter its size, is still one of the true pleasures of the Fishing Derby. The excitement starts with early morning sign up and builds with fish counts and weights throughout the event. Awards in several age brackets go for the most fish, biggest fish and smallest fish. The Fishing Derby team would like to recognize the long standing support and involvement of Ed Burrell and the entire staff of the Capitola Boat and Bait Company for helping make the Fishing Derby a success. Capitola Begonia Festival Memories
-By Kim Hogan
2017 marked the end of a 65-year tradition of gathering together over a long weekend to create memories among several thousand of close family and friends. It was a weekend where everyone could escape the stresses of daily life to enjoy clean simple family fun in our beautiful City of Capitola that most of us refer to as “Paradise”. The four day event was an extravaganza of visual stimulation with the nautical parade, sand sculptures, children’s art, and several other begonia-laden events. Color, color everywhere and a million different ways to be creative. It was truly a memorable event, especially for the few of us that had the privilege of volunteering. With the event the size of the Begonia Festival which, some years brought in 50 to 100 thousand people, one might think it took an army to coordinate all the events. In reality, there were only about 20 people involved with 5 leading the charge. It was a close nit group of friends performing a labor of love who will likely remain friends for years to come.
and, once again, love filled the air. The love of friends, family, neighbors, and comrades who worked tirelessly over many years to put on this wonderful weekend. In 2018 we move on to the Capitola Beach Festival. The Festival is committed to several of the traditional events and starting some new ones too. At its core, this new Festival is still about bringing together family and friends, to escape from the stresses of daily life, and create memories in our slice of Paradise we call Capitola.
In October of 2017 the committee wanted to throw one final event to thank all of the volunteers, sponsors, and long-time participants of the Begonia Festival for one last collection of memories and goodbye’s. A group of about 400 people gathered together at the Cocoanut Grove in Santa Cruz for the Begonia Festival Gratitude Gala. It was definitely a night to remember 2018 Committee

HORSESHOES IN THE SAND -By Vanessa Reed Fifteen years ago, Toni Castro, Executive Director of the Capitola Soquel Chamber of Commerce, asked the Hamby Family to chair her newly proposed tournament “Horseshoes in the Sand”. Scott Hamby describes the experience: “Toni knew that the Hamby family grew up pitching horseshoes and that horseshoe games were a part of all Hamby family get-together’s. My dad, Ike, brought the family tradition from Indiana when the family moved here in the 1950s. My dad and twin brothers, Barry and Garry, became master horseshoe players and filled the family party room with trophies. All three are pitching horseshoes in heaven now and I imagine “double ringers” are still the order of the day. New faces now lead the tournament and the number of participants has grown. Last year 100 players (50 teams) tossed shoes for 1st place. Horseshoe pitchers, young and old, novice and pro, get together and eagerly wait to see whose name will be drawn from the hat to be their partner. Whether you
are a participant or a bystander, there is never a dull moment. We are happy to be able to continue this fun event as part of the new Capitola Beach Festival. We have already received our first sign up! We look forward to its continued success and appreciate 2017 Winners - Curtis Gomez, Santa Cruz the horseshoe community and Jake Williams, Boulder Creek that keeps the passion for “Horseshoes in the Sand” alive. Come check out “Horseshoes in the Sand” in front of Zelda’s the weekend of September 29. The tournament is free, participation is limited, and you must preregister online or call 475-6522. Contact the Festival if you want to be a part of the new horseshoe tournament event team. “Horseshoes in the Sand” is sponsored by Zeldas Restaurant.
Where Have All the Begonias Gone? The Begonia Festival ended in 2017 with the retirement of the Brown Family at Golden State Bulb Growers. All of the begonias used by the Festival came from Golden State’s tuber growing fields. They recently sold their AmeriHybrid® and Antonelli tuberous begonias to Pan American Seed (PAS) based in Chicago, Illinois. PAS plans to market and grow these begonias on a much larger scale for growers and consumers throughout the world. Begonia seeds can be ordered at: custserv@panamseed.com Worth Brown, Begonia Expert from Golden State Bulb Growers, said “Golden State Bulb Growers, formerly the Brown Bulb Ranch and the Brown Family have been honored to donate the begonia blooms to the Capitola Begonia Festival for decades. It has been a symbiotic relationship benefitting both of us. Golden State
22
Bulb Growers will cease operations at the end of 2018. There are many factors involved in this decision, but it comes down to no longer being profitable to grow flower bulbs in California. We feel privileged to have been world leader in our industry for over a hundred years. All of our flower bulb varieties will continue to be grown in other locations, with a tradition of producing smiles and beautifying the world.” With plans to bring hanging begonias back to Capitola Village in September, Begonia Festival volunteers Laurie Hill and Willard Schwartz along with Capitola Public Works Maintenance Superintendent Eddie Ray Garcia are planting tubers provided by Golden State Bulb. Michael Lavigne at Lavigne Real Estate Services tends to the baskets placed at 331 Capitola Avenue.

CAPITOLA BEACH F E S T I V A L
-By Laurie Hill 2017 marked the 65th and final Capitola Begonia Festival “Begonias Take a Bow” In 2016 the Brown Ranch Family and Golden State Bulb Growers, the Festival’s sole source of begonias for over 30 years, announced their plans to retire. On Labor Day weekend epic crowds endured sweltering heat for the final Festival while the volunteer Festival committee rolled out a record 15 events over five days. Eleven begonia covered floats competed in the Nautical Parade. Betty Ann Chandler celebrated her 100th birthday at the Begonia Festival Nautical Parade. She has attended every Festival in the past 65 years. Many past Festival participants were recognized or memorialized throughout the weekend. A specialist begonia judge from New Zealand, Graham Milne, joined the fun and wrote about the entire festival in his Auckland Begonia Circle newsletter. After the record heat, we had thunder clouds, lightning and rain on the Monday activities (Fishing Derby, Children’s Art, Hula Hoops, and Rowboat Races). Laurie Hill, 2017 Festival President said “it was like tears for the last festival”. The Festival Team gathered that evening over pizza to share stories of their encounters and tears over our final memorable weekend.
Earlier in the year, the City of Capitola declared the tuberous begonia the official City flower – this after displaying decals of begonias on its city street signs for nearly 30 years. The Capitola Soquel Chamber of Commerce recognized the Capitola Begonia Festival all volunteer committee as the 2017 Volunteer Organization of the Year. Teresa Green, past Festival president, was honored as the 2018 Volunteer of the Year. At the October Gratitude Gala, Capitola celebrated all who made the Festival possible – especially the begonia growers in attendance (Golden State Bulb and the Antonelli and Roche families). Begonia blossoms filled the event – all handpicked from prize stock begonias in Golden State Bulb’s greenhouses. At the Gala Carin Hanna and rita (McPheeters) Schwarting presented to the Festival Committee the 1990 document declaring “Sister Festival” status to the Capitola and the Ballaarat Begonia Festival in Australia. Bringing the Begonia Festival to a close, the Festival Team honored the 65 year history with a donation to the Capitola History Museum, asking the museum to archive the treasured past and to curate exhibits about the Festival. The Team also made a contribution to the Capitola Arts and Cultural Commission, who quickly matched the funding, with plans to artfully memorialize this very special community event.

Rowboat Races Boat races of all kinds (dinghies, sailboats and rowboats) have been a part of the Begonia Festival since 1965 and the tradition will continue with the Capitola Beach Festival. The Rowboat Races are a series of timed head-to-head races up on Soquel Creek, from Stockton Bridge to the Trestle and back. Two participants in each boat. Groups of two rowboats race for the best time in their age group (Youth <12, Juniors 12-17, Adults 18-30 & Masters 31 & Over). Rowers sign up at the Creek between noon and 1:00 on race day. Ribbons awarded to 1st through 3rd in each division and participation ribbons for all. It’s all for fun. There may be a few ringers in the older groups, seeking revenge from last year’s loss, but the highlight is always the Youth. Coaxed by parents and siblings into rowboats along

with a passenger, the youngsters often take their first ride in a rowboat. The crowds cheer everyone on. There are groans when the boats get caught up in the riverside plants or docked boats. The passengers are there to help the rowers but depending on skill and relationship to the rower they have been described as “captain”, “coach” or just ballast. Sibling rivalries are the best, followed by the battles for inter-generational family honors. Oh, and the spouses battling each other! Once the rowers figure out they are pulling the oars to go backwards, they think it’s easy, but just wait for that first turn. Pulling the opposite side of where you want to go (backwards) with your coach yelling “encouragement” stresses out even the best of the rowers and the circles entail. This event is as much fun to watch as it is to compete in. Sponsored by Ironworkers Local #377

Festival. From pre-schoolers to art school graduates, everyone has a great time illustrating what makes Capitola so special.” We provide the chalk, a spot on the sea wall, and you provide the inspiration.
Lighted Nautical Parade
The begonias may be gone but Capitola still loves a parade. Be a part of this new parade or just come and watch. Saturday, September 29 will be Capitola’s first Lighted Nautical Parade. At dusk the lighted barges will meander from the trestle, under Stockton Bridge to circle the beach lagoon. This year’s festival theme is “Capitola Magic” Join us as we experiment with this new parade idea. We provide the 8X10 ft. floating barges to the first 10 groups who sign up. At home construct a simple frame or parts to anchor your creative light display onto the barge. On parade day, attach your lights to the barge at a small designated site along the creek and watch the watery reflections as you float down the creek. All materials
added to the barges must be removed by the float builders after the parade. Details for this new parade are still developing. Watch our Capitola Beach Festival website for more information and to sign up to decorate a barge. Call our Nautical Parade Chair 831 239-1611.
Festival President’s Message I, like many Capitola residents, was sad to see the long tradition of the Begonia Festival come to an end last year. I thought “surely there is a way for us to continue the tradition of fun free family entertainment. The Capitola Beach Festival Committee will continue some of the touchstones of our beloved Begonia Festival: sand sculptures, horseshoes in the sand, fishing derby, row boat races, chalk art and the nautical parade. The first five events remain as we have all loved them. My favorite personal memory was teaming up with my children in a row boat and bringing home a ribbon. In the absence of the magnificent begonias generously donated by Golden State Bulb growers, the new all volunteer committee was tasked with creating a parade that could inspire past and future float builders. We came up with a lighted float parade for Saturday evening. Following the nautical parade tradition, but with a twist, a parade of lighted barges will grace Soquel Creek.
The last piece of the new festival puzzle was complete when the Wharf to Wharf Committee came to us and asked if we could add an exciting and fun family oriented foot race. Plans are underway for The Little Wharf! A 3 mile race starting from East Cliff shopping center on Portola and 16th the race ends at the Capitola Esplanade. This year it is my pleasure to not only be the City Mayor but also the president of the Capitola Beach Festival. With the support of the City, Council, Capitola Businesses, and your participation we look forward to this Festival becoming a new tradition for Capitola families for many years to come. Michael Termini, President. Board Members: Dave Peyton, Kim Hogan, Teresa Green, Thea Luiten, Mary Beth Cahalen

apitola wasn’t always called Capitola. The original settlement grew out of what was then called Soquel Landing. Frederick A. Hihn obtained the land in 1865 from the heirs of rancho grantee Martina Castro. With the help of a ship’s carpenter, Samuel A. Hill, he built a wharf at the mouth of Soquel Creek and called it Soquel Landing. Samuel A. Hall not only built the wharf but also Soquel’s Congregational Church and was the main carpenter on most of the buildings that Hihn developed. The wharf served as an outlet for the produce—mostly potatoes—and lumber grown in the interior. Shipping was successful until 1874 when the railroad was established along the coast. Once the railroad came in, shipping slowed down, and the mills grew quiet. In 1869, Frederick A. Hihn decided to develop the coast into a resort for tourists. His first lessee was Samuel A. Hall, and the area became known as Camp Capitola. Hihn saw that the landscape that provided refuge from the summer heat could also be profitable. His foresight created the place known now as the oldest seaside resort on the Pacific Coast. Camp Capitola had its grand opening July 4, 1874 and was instantly popular with tourists. Visitors came by car and on the Santa Cruz-Watsonville train year-round to visit Capitola. In 1882 Hihn subdivided lots and built cabins, a livery stable, a skating rink, a theater, a bandstand, and a 30-room hotel. Hotel Capitola, boasting 160 rooms, was built until 1895 to replace the original hotel. Unfortunately, it burned down in 1929. As time went on, a merry-go-round and

various arcade games were added to the village charm. The name “Capitola” was probably given to the resort to commemorate the fact that in 1869 the town of Soquel had invited the government of California to settle there and make its capital in upstairs rooms of Ned Porter’s store. Capitola is “capital” in the Spanish language. In the meantime, Soquel was becoming a bustling little town. In 1843, John Daubenbiss arrived in California and built and operated a flour mill in the village of Santa Clara. With John Hames, also a pioneer, he also built a flour mill and a sawmill on Soquel Creek. He harvested and sold timber for the Commercial Street pier in San Francisco and furnished the lumber and pilings for the long wharf at San Francisco, at the foot of Commercial Street. In 1847 he married Sarah Lard in San Jose and they settled in Soquel.

They moved into their home, which still sits on the hill overlooking Soquel, shortly after it was built in 1867. Daubenbiss stayed in Soquel for the rest of his life and became known as one of the town founders. He is also credited with donating the land for Soquel cemetery and building the first school. John Daubenbiss struck ill and died at his home on February 10, 1896, at the age of 79. He was buried next to his wife and children at their family plot in the Soquel Cemetery down the road. In 1912, a group of Soquel women, calling themselves the Soquel Ladies Improvement Club, decided that Soquel needed a public library. They approached William and Mary Porter Sesnon to donate a piece of land in town for the library. An agreement was reached that the ladies would raise the money for the building and the Sesnons would donate the land and their own architects (the same two who designed the Sesnon house now on the campus of Cabrillo College) to design the building. The money was raised and on October 19, 1912, the first cornerstone was laid. In January of 1913, the doors of the Soquel Memorial Public Library opened to the public. The building was named the Porter Memorial Public Library in honor of Benjamin and Kate Porter, the parents of Mary Porter Sesnon.

The New England-style structure, with its soaring steeple, was organized in 1868 by Joshua and Narcissa Parrish. Coming from Ohio in 1852, they settled in Soquel and soon realized there was no church in town. Narcissa began inviting community women to attend weekly prayer meetings in her home which lead to Miss LuLu Hall, a local schoolteacher, to offer Sunday School in Soquel’s one-room schoolhouse. From the prayer meetings and the Sunday School emerged a “society” that led to the organization of the Congregational Church of Soquel and its ultimate construction in 1870. Joshua and Narcissa donated the land and Samuel A. Hall (who was also Lulu Hall’s father) designed the building and oversaw construction. The church has seen a number of upheavals. In 1955, Soquel Village was flooded when Soquel Creek overflowed its banks and the church was used as a temporary shelter for people in need. In 1967, the historic structure was damaged by an arson fire and restored. When Soquel was flooded again in 1982, the church became a temporary fire station. The earthquake of 1989 knocked the steeple bell from its mounting. The Congregational Church has been the church home for generations of people since has then and just celebrated its 150th anniversary!

Marie’s first poster in 2002 was our best selling poster ever! She has been one of Santa Cruz’s premier watercolorists for over ten years and was just voted Best Artist in the GoodTimes. Her work is internationally appreciated.
The first Wharf to Wharf Race was run July 28, 1973 as one of a number of festivities scheduled by the City of Capitola’s Heritage Days to celebrate the dedication of Camp Capitola’s Superintendent’s Office, as a California State Historical Landmark with Soquel high School track coach, Ken Thomas, served as Race Director and The $200 race budget was underwritten by the City of Capitola. Race officials declared Stanford’s Jack Bellah the winner and duly awarded him a plaque proclaiming him Champion of the “WARF TO WARF” Race!
ON YOUR MARK...
The 273 first race participants declared the race a grand success. When they clamored for the race the following year, and the race began a life of its own. Through the 70’s, the race grew dramatically. When 14,000 runners showed up in 1987, jamming village streets and race venues, organizers feared for the event’s future. In the years since, participation has been capped to preserve the integrity of the race and insure the safety of its runners.
GIVING BACK TO LOCAL ATHLETES
The race was incorporated as a California nonprofit in 1980 to promote running health and fitness among the youth of Santa Cruz County. Its Board of Directors meets monthly to review policy, procedures and oversee the distribution of race proceeds to local programs and special projects. Race donations to 34 local schools in 2017 totaled just under $270,000.

WITH SUCCESS COMES CELEBRITY
The largest summer event of its kind on the West Coast, Wharf to Wharf receives broad print and electronic media attention being broadcast live on radio, covered by local TV stations and televised by cable television on race day evening. It is highlighted in all running industry publications as one of the top races in America. While most come for sun, fun, and fitness reasons, serious athletes run to test their mettle against the best. The race draws
an elite, international field. The roll of past champions numbers several Olympic stars.
EVERYONE’S A WINNER
Between the thrilling views of the Santa Cruz and Capitola Coastline, stellar local bands and music, and familiar faces cheering participants along the route, each year’s race is unforgettable. The Race is produced and administered by Wharf to Wharf Race, Inc., a California nonprofit corporation chartered to promote running as a means to health and fitness. Race proceeds benefit Santa Cruz County youth sports in general and the running community in particular.

Jacob’s Heart Celebrates 20 Years of Service The 20th Annual Kidrageous Golden Carnival at the Watsonville City Plaza is an amazing day of fun for your entire family. Carnival fun fills the day with music, dance, magicians, clowns, arts and crafts, SLIME, bounce houses, face painting, parades, an amazing raffle (new bike), pony rides, petting zoo, live entertainment and much more.
Every booth and activity at Kidrageous is in honor of or in memory of a local child with cancer, and your attendance supports Jacob’s Heart families. The Unlimited Activity Wristband ($15) covers all activities. Food, beverage and raffle tickets are sold separately. Wristbands can also be purchased at the event.
It’s all about the kids! Celebrate hope and family at the Kidrageous Golden Carnival. Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support Services started with one little boy who was given a 5% chance to survive one of the deadliest forms of childhood cancer: acute myelogenous leukemia. Jacob, now 25 years old, remembers his number one concern as a child with cancer: how his family would cope with his illness.
Since 1998, Jacob’s Heart has addressed the isolation, fear, and seemingly insurmountable day-to-day challenges that families experience as they endure the journey of pediatric cancer and the potential of childhood death. Through the development of effective programs, Jacob’s Heart has provided emotional and psychosocial support, practical and financial assistance, and peer mentorship to thousands who are grieving the loss of the health of a child or grieving the loss of the life of a child from a place of deep understanding and vast experience.
SEPT EMBER Childhood Cancer Awareness Month 46
It’s all about the love! In 1999, Jacob’s Heart led the grassroots efforts to establish the month of September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in the State of California. Kidrageous started as an innovative way to gather signatures for a petition, which was sent to Governor Gray Davis by Bruce McPherson. From a petition started in a parking lot in Santa Cruz, Governor Davis issued an executive
order proclaiming September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The proclamation was later confirmed by concurrent resolution of the State Senate. Now, 19 years later, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is celebrated across the country every September, with an annual proclamation by the President of the United States.

Jacob’s Heart holds the original copy of the 1999 resolution, which speaks to the urgent need for raising awareness. It reads: “WHEREAS, according to the National Childhood Cancer Foundation, cancer kills more children each year than asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, congenital anomalies, and AIDS combined; and WHEREAS, California is the proud home of some of the finest medical institutions in the world and their research efforts have extended the lives of children cancer patients and increased the number of long-term survivors; and WHEREAS, California’s greatest resource and most cherished treasures are our children, it is essential that this progress continues; and WHEREAS, dedicated organizations, such as Jacob’s Heart, remain deeply committed to expanding resources needed to support children and their families; and WHEREAS, it is important for all Californians to join in recognizing and applauding the valuable role which families of childhood cancer patients play in helping the medical community reach great heights in the name of caring.”

HAND CRAFTED EXPLORE OUR LOCAL BREWERIES & BREWPUBS BEER CAN BECOME A WAY OF LIFE
-By Noel Smith
There certainly are some wonderful Breweries and Brewpubs to cheer about here in Santa Cruz. With at least 17 Breweries (with more coming) and several fun and inviting brewpubs now operating in Santa Cruz County, the range of styles, offerings, and flavor has never been better. The current trend for local Breweries in 2018 shows outstandingly creative pilsners, ales, lagers, stouts, porters, and malts, Juicy IPA’s made with fruit. Most beers consumed at the bar (or table) are the lights such as pilsners, ales, and lagers. To sample beers and new flavors, most breweries offer “Flights” of 4-5 Oz. portions allowing you to try several different beers thus feeding the thirst of the many craft beer aficionados looking for the newest and also the best flavors. When you walk into a brewery or brewpub and are faced with 30-40 choices of beers, it’s a great experience to taste-test 2 or 3 to find what you really want when you finally order your pint. Brewers are constantly experimenting with new recipes, and improving their existing offerings at the same time so the search never ends to find something new from their local brewer. It’s the chef’s knowledge and training that can transform ingredients into a flavorful, unique dish to be served raw or cooked in liquid, or over fire, heat, or smoke. Similarly a craft brewer mixes different grains in water that may be treated with minerals which then, with the help of the enzymes from the husk of the grain, transform the starches into sugars. After adding hops and possibly herbs, spices, or other ingredients, and then boiling, the liquid is converted into fermentable wort. Yeast is added to create CO2 and alcohol after fermentation, thus becoming the beer that fills our glass. You don’t have to plant yourself on a bar stool to enjoy a
50
craft beer, the growth in Craft beer sales has been fueled by bottling some of their offerings which allows the customers to take their favorite beer home with them. Craft breweries have found that true Beer lovers are willing to pay a bit more for a good beer and if they can take it home with them – all the better. One of the latest trends sweeping the beer industry is canning. Some breweries offer glass or ceramic “Growlers” that will let you take a half gallon (64 Oz.) or full gallon (128 Oz.) of your favorite beer home with you. However 16 Oz. and 32 Oz. cans called “Crowlers” are much more popular. If you like what you’ve tasted at the brewery, they might be able to can it for you right on the spot. Cans keep the beer fresh longer than re-sealable glass, and the brewery can display artwork on the cans. A fun by- product of the canning craze is that it offers breweries a canvas to create artwork that is attractive to the consumer. If the Artwork is interesting, it might be that the contents are also. The Craft Beer industry now has over 15% of the U.S. beer industry and there are over 6,300 Breweries operating in the U.S. today with California having the most with close to 300, the most ever in the history of our state. Amidst the spread of shiny new craft beer places, brewpubs serving food with their beers have it all—that magical combination of great beer and great food, rolled into one experience. Brewpubs that get it right will have guests that
will keep coming back again and again. Cheers to that! The next time you have an outing with friends and family, stop in to a local Brewery or brewpub to find out for yourself what all the fuss is about. Santa Cruz has some of the most talented Brewers on the West Coast, and they are making some of the best beer you will ever taste. Go try some today!

ntertaining at your home this summer? Before you get down to cooking, you’ve got to plan the menu and shop for it. And of course a fabulous summer dinner must have wine with it. There are so many different types of wines! So what kind goes with which types of food? This guide can help you choose the perfect varietal for your meal, so you don’t end up wandering the wine aisles in a state of confusion.
Syrah – Syrah is a big red varietal from the Rhone valley in France. Its red and black fruit flavors make it a classic beef pairing. Any good Syrah will make a great beef pairing at your holiday meal.
Poultry is a favorite at any BBQ. Many people assume that white wine is an automatic pairing, but it’s best to pair poultry with a fruity, lighter bodied red wine. Here are three that will bring out the best in your meal:
Sangiovese – Sometimes also called Brunello, Sangiovese is a varietal that can do great things on your table. This wonderful Italian wine has strong notes of red fruit and hints of leather and tobacco, making it a perfect pairing for beef.
Pinot Noir – The lightest bodied of all the red wine varietals, the graceful, silky mouth feel of this wine and the wonderful earthiness will make you want to follow every bite with a sip.
Cabernet Sauvignon – Usually the biggest and boldest red wine, cabs have a high tannin content that makes them the most typical red meat pairing. You should open the bottles an hour or so before serving to let the wine breathe a little.
Beaujolais – This southern Burgundy varietal is a classic turkey pairing. The high acid will help cut through the richness of your side dishes, while the low tannins won’t overpower the delicate white meat.
Don’t forget the dessert wines. The secret of serving dessert wine is that it should be sweeter than the dessert and should match the flavor intensity. If the dessert is delicate or fruity, serve a Muscat, which should be chilled before serving. A heavy chocolate dessert, such as a torte, will do well with a port or Madeira wine. A dessert wine with, after, or in place of dessert can set your dinner apart from just another meal.
Zinfandel – This fruity, high-alcohol wine is perfect with a holiday meal. Zin is heavier than a pinot or Beaujolais and will be better suited to a meal with side dishes that are rich and buttery. Many people opt for red meat on their table, usually a beef 54
rib roast. Beef nearly always needs a big red wine to stand up to its richness, and typical holiday preparations tend to make this even more true.
Whatever the occasion sit back relax and enjoy the journey of paring Food and Wine.

Add Spice to Summer Entertaining Warmer weather may mean finding ways to cool off, but that doesn’t mean you can’t bring bold flavors to the gathering you’re hosting with family and friends. Whether it’s a barbecue bash or a casual pool party, there is a flavorful blend perfect for nearly every occasion. When the sun is shining, it’s time to fire up the grill, which means you can get creative and show off your skills. Add a little flavor to your world – Dale Sabor A Tu Mundo – with a versatile ingredient like Tabasco Sauce, which has helped personalize the flavors of food across the globe for nearly 150 years. Whether used as an
ingredient or condiment, it can add flavor to virtually any type of cuisine, including Mexican favorites like this Parrillada Mixta with Garlic and Sweet Chipotle Marinades. Throw some steak, shrimp and chicken on the grill and combine with sweet and spicy marinades to create a grilled spread that’s nearly irresistible. Take it up a notch and serve it with sides such as fresh limes, sizzling onions, creamy guacamole, pico de gallo and soft corn tortillas to complete your meal. It’s a tasty way to add an extra kick of flavor to summer entertaining.

garlic cloves, peeled medium white onion, quartered cups light Mexican beer cup olive oil tablespoon coarse black pepper tablespoons Tabasco Chipotle Pepper Sauce teaspoon salt flank steaks (1 pound each)
Servings: 6-8 2 pounds extra-large shrimp, peeled, deveined and tails on 4-6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts To make Garlic Chipotle Marinade: In blender, puree garlic, onion, beer, olive oil and pepper. Transfer puree to large mixing bowl; add chipotle sauce and salt. Place steaks in re-sealable plastic bag and pour in marinade. Note: Marinating time depends on the cut of beef selected. For fajitas or skirt steak, marinate at least 6 hours. To make Sweet Chipotle Marinade: In blender, puree garlic, bell pepper, onion, cinnamon, paprika, olive oil, agave, lime juice, orange juice, water and chipotle pepper sauce. In separate re-sealable plastic bags, divide marinade over
garlic cloves, peeled red bell pepper, de-seeded and stemmed small white onion teaspoon ground cinnamon teaspoon smoked paprika tablespoons olive oil tablespoons agave syrup tablespoons fresh lime juice cups orange juice cups cold water tablespoons Tabasco Chipotle Pepper Sauce salt, to taste
chicken and shrimp. Allow shrimp to marinate 8 hours and chicken 24 hours. To prepare meat: Remove steak, shrimp and chicken from marinade and set aside. Heat grill to medium-high heat. Brush off excess marinade and grill chicken first, to desired doneness, then steak and shrimp. Note: Cooking times will vary depending on cuts of meat and desired doneness. For best results, use a meat thermometer. Serving suggestion: Place steak, shrimp and chicken on large platter and serve with side items such as fresh guacamole, pico de gallo, grilled onions, fresh limes and fresh corn tortillas. a specific cuisine, you can almost always find it in Santa Cruz County. We are definitely an “international” area. Our area is a vacation destination for many visitors. Your out of town guests will never forget their restaurant experience here! Talk to your friends, visit the Internet, read reviews, and find someplace you haven’t been to before, and soon your friends will be asking you about where to go for dinner, lunch, or breakfast. There are so many amazing restaurants to choose from in Santa Cruz County, but it’s worth the search. Good hunting!
