LIVING COLOR
hen picking a color for cabinetry, personality and lifestyle are essential considerations. Gray and white cabinets are options for the modern active living lifestyle, whereas green and blue tones may work better for a more eclectic existence. Whichever way you go, colored cabinetry is more than just a trend: it’s a design approach that is here to stay. That’s why careful planning is necessary when you set out to redesign the kitchen. After all, this essential living space is an area where you spend plenty of time, so it should feature visual elements and colors you find appealing. White kitchen cabinets have dominated the market for many years. White cabinetry is constant, safe and classic. However, reports from designers and data on market buying trends are showing a slight shift in painted cabinetry design from classic white to pops of color. “We know kitchen cabinetry is an ever-evolving dynamic, but we also believe certain trends are more constant and everlasting,” said Angela O’Neill, director of marketing and advertising at Wellborn Cabinet. “We trust consumers and we believe HOME fall-winter 2018 8 COASTAL & GARDEN
they have spoken and have spoken very loudly in regard to painted cabinetry.” The current styling trend, is a marriage of traditional and contemporary finishes, materials and fabrics equating to a classic, timeless design. Beloved white is now making way for trending warmer tones featuring shades of gray, green and blue.
A CALMING EFFECT Letting your personality show through with color in the kitchen doesn’t have to mean going outlandishly bold. Paint hues like aqua, mint and olive can all set the stage for a calm, inviting atmosphere. Each of these shades provides a mild taste of colored cabinetry, imparting an effect that is subtle but bold enough to make its presence known.
MINK GRAY Exploring shades of gray is another way to develop a unique look. Some shades result in a calm, tranquil effect. However, if you’re looking for a more dominant color, an option like Mink Gray from Wellborn Cabinet gives the feel of a much warmer space. Minimalists swoon over this classic yet clean gray because it isn’t overpowering, and the timeless color adds to the transitional styling of cabinetry.

IT ALL STARTED WITH WHITE It’s true that white cabinetry set the pace for painted cabinetry, and it’s likely to remain a popular option for homeowners. Remember, though, that not all whites are the same and different shades can elicit a different design motif entirely. Cabinets in shades of white are enduring and versatile, appearing in cottage, traditional and even modern kitchens. Also remember that although it’s simple, there’s nothing dull about white cabinetry. Embrace the classic white spacious kitchen in your home but take it up a notch with brass lanterns, a round dining table and fabriccovered chairs.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT CABINET COLOR Once you’ve made the decision to add colored cabinets to the kitchen, there’s an obvious next question: which color? With so many options to choose from, you may need to answer some basic questions to narrow down the field.
BOLD VS. SUBTLE If you’re looking for a dramatic change, a bold approach may be the perfect solution. Just remember that a bold space can border on overly bold. It needs to be a color and shade that you will continue to enjoy over time. On the other hand, if you’re set on adding color but not sure something so vibrant will do, a softer shade of that color may offer a more subtle solution.
ALL OVER VS. ACCENT Consider whether your vision calls for paint on all of your kitchen cabinetry, or if you’re simply looking to create a standout feature. A color that looks terrific as a focal point may overwhelm if it’s
applied throughout the room, so evaluate which of the options you’re weighing is best suited to the use you have in mind.
FIT WITHIN THE HOME In many homes, the design style flows from one room to the next. It’s important when making a major change like colored cabinets to understand how the new style will fit with the rest of the house. For example, whether it will complement or contrast, and if it contrasts, ensure that’s the look you’re truly going for.
COMPLETING THE DESIGN Another often-overlooked consideration is how you’ll complete the room once the cabinetry is installed. Think about the rest of the woodwork, other finishes like backsplash and flooring, and dining furniture in the space. Also consider your appliances and any decorative items you may wish to add. Ensure the color you’re considering will fit with the other elements. If it doesn’t, you may have to consider upgrading those features to achieve a cohesive look. If you’re still having trouble narrowing down your selection, many designers recommend selecting an inspiration piece and designing the rest of the room, including the cabinetry, to complement it. SPRUCE UP YOUR OUTDOOR
ver time, the appearance and function of any outdoor space can dull due to combinations of heat, precipitation and use. With some careful attention, you can quickly spruce up your outdoor living areas and get them back in great working order for patio season.
TAKE CARE OF TEXTILES
Outdoor textiles often take a beating from the elements. Freshen up often-overlooked things like outdoor rugs, lawn furniture cushions, pillows and umbrellas. A thorough vacuuming may be adequate to remove leaves, bugs or dirt. However, if stubborn spots persist and a deeper cleaning is needed, review the manufacturer’s guidelines. Washing covered furniture from time to time helps ensure it’s ready for use no matter the season.
DECLARE DUST OFF-LIMITS Dingy light fixtures and fans lend an air of disrepair in any space. Outdoors, they’ll undoubtedly collect dust and dirt quickly, but a deep clean can help make them easier to maintain. Dust and scrub as needed, and if necessary, grab a scrub brush and some soapy water to brighten up other items like decorative pieces and flower pots.
HOME fall-winter 2018 12 COASTAL & GARDEN
FRESHEN UP FINISHES From furniture to hard surfaces, the finishes can take a beating. Take time to bring these items back to their former glory by rinsing, scrubbing and brushing dirt away from your wrought iron, metal, aluminum or wicker furniture. If needed, apply a fresh coat of sealant or add a rust-preventive layer of new paint. The same applies for other surfaces with finishes that may be chipped and dull.
BLAST AWAY GRIME A careful sweeping with a sturdy broom is a good starting point, but to get your outdoor space truly clean you may need a little more power. When used at the appropriate settings, a pressure washer can clean a wide range of surfaces from patios, decks and sidewalks to siding, windows, screens and tables. When cleaning these surfaces, it’s important to find a power washer that can cut through the grime and rinse it away. In addition to gas-powered options, Briggs & Stratton offers a full line of electric pressure washers to help you tackle light-duty outdoor cleaning projects around the house. Some models, like
the S1800, feature a turbo nozzle to give you the ability to blast away grime up to 40 percent faster than with a standard spray tip. When that power is combined with an onboard detergent tank, you can eliminate outdoor grime quickly and efficiently, so you can get back to enjoying your outdoor living space. Getting started is simple. Just turn on the washer and begin with a rinse setting to loosen dirt and debris. Next, use the soap nozzle to apply the detergent in the tank. You may want to let the detergent sit for especially grimy areas, depending on the detergent’s directions for use. Rinse thoroughly and repeat the process if needed.
SAFETY TIPS FOR OPERATING A PRESSURE WASHER Dress for the task. Wear indirect-vented (chemical splash) goggles for eye protection and a pair of closed-toe shoes such as sneakers or boots. Before getting started, be sure to remove all electronics, cords and wires, and place them safely away from water. Perform routine maintenance. Prior to each use, check the oil level and top off if low. Check the water screens to ensure they can freely move water. Inspect hoses and couplings; if they are cracked or brittle, replace them. Know your equipment and where it can or can’t be used. Never operate your gas pressure washer indoors or in enclosed structures. When operating a gas pressure washer, use it outdoors away from occupied spaces to prevent a potentially deadly buildup of carbon monoxide. When operating a gas pressure washer, know the signs of potential carbon monoxide poisoning (dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea or irregular breathing), and if you experience these symptoms get to fresh air right away and seek medical attention.
THE POWERS OF A PRESSURE WASHER A pressure washer can provide up to 75 times more cleaning power than a standard hose for deep cleaning. They are ideal tools to clean the following areas:
• Siding • Driveways and sidewalks • Decks
• Patio furniture • Windows • Brick or stone steps • Trash cans
• Vehicles or boats • Grills • Fire pits • Garage door

Always point the nozzle in a safe direction. Never operate a pressure washer near small children or pets. Before storing, relieve the pressure in the system. Also run a cycle of water through the machine to eliminate any detergent residue and give the unit time to cool down before storing.

pprehension and inexperience keep many homeowners from pursuing renovation projects that would make their homes more functional, enjoyable and comfortable. Getting your hands dirty on the front end – with some planning and preparation – is the best blueprint for a successful home remodeling project.
START WITH A PLAN Although it may sound obvious, the first step really is to decide what you hope to accomplish with your renovation. At the least, begin to outline rough ideas to discuss with an expert. Reaching out to contractors before you’ve determined a basic idea for your project can waste time and money. Spend time listing the features you must have, as well as some nice-to-haves if budget allows. Also think about overall functionality, design and layout. If you get overwhelmed or need ideas, don’t hesitate to turn to online showrooms or magazines for inspiration.
SET A BUDGET If the sky is the limit, skip ahead, but if you’re like most homeowners, money matters. Have a clear idea of what you can afford to invest in your renovation before you get started, and if necessary, research the financing options available to you. Look for financing that provides deferred interest or low monthly payments to help manage the project cost. Setting a clear budget can help keep your contractors accountable, and it goes a long way toward ensuring you can enjoy your finished project without regret.
HOME fall-winter 2018 14 COASTAL & GARDEN
DRAW UP THE PLANS To help set your plan in motion, there are numerous online tools you can utilize to simplify each step of the process including design, budgeting and more.
INVOLVE A PROFESSIONAL Unless you have the time and skills, you’ll want a licensed and insured contractor to lead the project when you’re ready to get your renovation in motion. It can be wise to solicit multiple bids, not only to ensure you get the best value, but also to find someone whose work, style and experience is most in line with the needs of your project. After all, this person will be a big part of your life during a fairly stressful time period. Always check references and verify the contractor’s standing with local associations.
GET READY FOR WORK Remember that you’ll need to create a work environment that is safe for your contractors and protects your valuable possessions. Establish a clear path to the project space for easy access and

removal of debris. Furniture, appliances, room furnishings, valuables and breakable items should be removed from both the path to the work site and the work site itself. If your renovation project will involve an essential room, such as the kitchen or a bathroom, make alternate arrangements such as creating a makeshift kitchen with the bare necessities in another part of the house. COUNTERTOPS 101 Kitchens and bathrooms are among the most common renovation projects, and countertops are often a focal point of these redesigns. However, choosing the right countertop can be overwhelming. Here are two of the most popular choices: Granite countertops have long been the mainstay of a beautiful kitchen or bathroom. Granite is a natural stone, quarried from large stone deposits around the world. It can have many different variations of patterns and colors, giving each slab a unique appearance that is visually rich and dynamic. In addition to its distinctive beauty and classic elegance, granite is also extremely durable. Granite is highly resistant to heat and scratches and, with proper sealing, offers good water and stain resistance and is easy to clean. Granite typically needs to be sealed, both prior to installation and at least once per year. If properly maintained, a granite countertop will last for as long as you own your home, making it a potential long-term investment. Quartz is another popular choice for countertops due to its durability, stain resistance and ease of maintenance. It’s an engineered product made mostly from up to 93 percent quartz, a non-porous natural stone, combined with a small amount of binder and color. Small particles of glass or reflective metal flakes can also be added to some quartz designs to achieve a more unique look. The result is an attractive slab that can be made in a wide variety of tones and colors, and can be finished to duplicate high gloss polished stone. Quartz is one of the most durable countertop materials and one of the easiest to maintain. It is highly resistant to heat, water and stains, including stains from coffee, wine, lemon juice, olive oil, vinegar and more. Unlike granite, quartz does not need to be sealed, making it easier to maintain over time. TIME TO BUILD THAT ADU BOARD ELIMINATES MOST COUNTY FEES
By Zach Friend, County Supervisor 2nd District
COUNTY HOUSING NEEDS GROWING
Over the last few years the Board of Supervisors has worked to address the growing affordability challenge in our community. Santa Cruz County ranks as one of the least affordable places in the world according to a recent international affordable housing study. Only about 15 percent of residents can afford to purchase the median priced home and the rental market is commanding an average rent of approximately $2,700 month for a two- bedroom apartment. Many in our community pay over half of their income on housing costs. Clearly this path isn’t sustainable. Working families are struggling to make ends meet, commutes are increasing (as people move further away to find affordable options) and local employers are finding it difficult to attract and retain employees. Seniors are finding it harder to locate housing options and young professionals are moving away seeing limited opportunities for affordable housing.
COUNTY TRYING TO INCREASE HOUSING AVAILABILITY
One of the quickest ways to increase affordable housing options is to increase the production of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). As I’ve written in previous columns, the Board of Supervisors has already made significant improvements in this regard to reduce fees, speed up the process for approval and provide a toolkit for residents interested in building an ADU. Given how long it takes for larger affordable housing developments to come online (often multiple years), it seems prudent to do everything we can to encourage the development of more ADUs. As a result, the Board approved an item I brought forward to create a three-year pilot program to eliminate some of the fees the County charges for ADU approval on smaller ADU units (smaller than 640 square feet).
REDUCING THE OBSTACLES
Three oft-cited barriers to building ADUs are regulatory barriers, excessive fees, and ease of permitting. By adopting and expanding the recently approved state regulatory changes and developing a streamlined permitting process the Board has addressed two of these three barriers. And while fees have been reviewed and reduced, establishing a pilot HOME fall-winter 2018 20 COASTAL & GARDEN
program to eliminate permitting fees should spur creation of additional units. The fees that the Board is eliminating in this pilot only pertain to fees the County controls. There are still fees associated with local water districts, for example, that can create barriers to ADU construction but those fees are controlled directly by the district. Over the past several years, many positive changes and new policies have been implemented to facilitate additional affordable housing. From technical improvements such as online plan submission and increased Planning Department review hours to streamlined permit processes and toolkits that simplify the process..
CONCENTRATING ON ADU HOUSING Smaller ADUs, specifically 1 bedroom or smaller (640 square feet) are affordable by design. The Board has emphasized the development of smaller units to have more affordable options for local residents. Waiving Planning fees for units less than 640 square feet will encourage these smaller units and spur additional construction of this much needed affordable housing type. On average, a 640 square foot ADU would incur about $11,500 in County-related fees. This program will waive fees specific to the Planning Department, which are approximately $7,300 of those fees. Fees included in the waiver would be processing, building plan check, permit fee, soil waiver report, environmental plan check, environmental inspection, address review, zoning review and General Plan/technology fees. These inspections and reviews still occur; there just won’t be a County-associated fee with them during this three-year pilot (for these smaller ADUs). If you have any questions on this you can reach out to Zach Friend at 454-2200 or visit the Planning Department’s website for information on ADUs at www.santacruzcounty.us

THE SECOND SEASON OF
We all recognize the cycles of life in the Monterey Bay area, whether it’s migrating whales in the bay, Monarchs fluttering at Natural Bridges, or tourists clogging the roads in summer. Just as predictable, is the enthusiastic frenzy of customers crowding Garden Centers during the first sunny weekends of spring. From the perspective of a horticultural professional, it just doesn’t make sense. Shopping for plants in spring is challenging at best. After searching for an empty parking space, you join the hordes of customers looking for perennials, shrubs, vines and trees that are still forming roots at remote wholesale nurseries. Often, the plants that are available are very young, lightly rooted, with no buds or flowers. Shopping for plants in fall is much more satisfying. This is when we have some of our nicest weather and garden centers have plenty of space to park and personnel to help. More importantly, the selection of plants is awesome with aisles of lush, vigorous, blooming perennials, shrubs, and vines. The Salvias or Sages are generally in their prime in early fall with hummingbirds buzzing about collecting nectar. Many are not available in spring and the diversity of flower forms and colors just can’t be appreciated with label descriptions. This is when Coneflowers demonstrate why they are so attractive to honey bees and butterflies. This includes Golden Rudbeckias, Gaillardias, and Echinaceas in a wide range of colors. As a bonus, the center cones serve as natural bird feeders for finches long after flowers have faded. The list goes on with Alstroemeria, Geranium, Lantana, Lavender, Penstemon, Yarrow, and many more perennials displaying true color and form. Many larger shrubs are best appreciated around the Autumnal Equinox. The velvety leaves and deep purple blooms of the Princess Flower (Tibouchina) are gorgeous, Lion’s Tail HOME fall-winter 2018 22 COASTAL & GARDEN
(Leonotis) are budded and breaking into bright orange clusters while Angel’s Trumpets (Brugmansia) show off their pendant tropical trumpets with intoxicating evening fragrance. Climbing vines can be used in so many applications and the selection is best after a long summer growing season when you find Passion Flowers, Black Eyed Susan vines (Thunbergia), Honeysuckle, Bower Vine (Pandorea), Red Trumpet Vine (Distictis) and Bougainvillea. It seems obvious, but shopping for trees with fall color is easier when you can actually see what you might be looking at for decades to come. And if you’re into California natives, prewinter planting usually yields a high success rate. There are abundant opportunities for those interested in edible landscapes too. Although deciduous fruit trees are more plentiful in late winter (think Apples, Cherries, Peaches, Pears, Plums) the fall brings a great selection of Citrus, Avocados, Olives, Figs and Blueberries. And of course, our mild fall and winter weather is perfect for planting Lettuce, Kale, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Swiss Chard, Spinach, Garlic and Onions, as well as, all of the perennial herbs. In addition to the superior plant selection, fall growing conditions are far more favorable. The soil is so much warmer than spring and this accelerates root growth. The sun angle is lower and day length is shorter reducing stress on leaves, and, winter rains will provide precious moisture, even in a dry year. So whether you’re thinking about adding just a few plants to the garden or replacing your entire landscape, this is the time to go to your favorite garden center and take advantage of the best planting season of the year. HEIRLOOM TOMATO SOUP WITH MINT INGREDIENTS 10-12 medium-sized heirloom tomatoes 1/4 cup olive oil, divided 3 cloves garlic, crushed 3 sprigs mint, leaves removed red wine vinegar, or lemon juice to taste salt to taste honey to taste, only if needed So simple, so delicious, this tomato soup shines with an unexpected pairing of mint to complement the ripe tomatoes. Basil is traditional, of course, but mint brings a special element to this fresh, elegant soup, It doesn’t overwhelm, but it hums gently in the background, makes you taste, again and again, searching for the source of that mysterious flavor. You could get cute and make this with Green Zebra tomatoes, to really confuse people… but we made it here with some incredible Cherokee
DIRECTIONS Quarter the tomatoes. In a large stockpot, combine the tomatoes and about half of the olive oil. Cover with a lid and cook on mediumlow heat for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. The tomatoes will release their juices and begin to fall apart as the soup simmers. Add the garlic, and continue cooking for another 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Add the mint and the rest of the olive oil. Transfer the soup to a blender, or use an immersion blender to blend the soup till smooth and creamy. Taste the soup after blending, and add salt, a splash of vinegar, or a tablespoon of honey, if you think it’s necessary. Serve warm or cool. Recipe provided by Mountain Feed and Farm Supply

Purples, and the results were absolutely delicious. We got the recipe from The Occidental Arts and Ecology Center Cookbook: Fresh-from-the-Garden Recipes for Gatherings Large and Small, a great resource for the home gardener and seasonal eater. Serve this one warm or cool, depending on the mood. This soup really doesn’t need anything else, but a dollop of Lemon Cream might not be amiss if you were feeling fancy…

IDEAL SLEEP
the sweet elixir that makes every new day fresh with promise and possibility. If you’re getting adequate amounts of deep and REM (dream state) sleep each night you are quite possibly among the happiest and healthiest. The Center for Disease Control records show that here on the central coast up to 36% of us report that we are not getting adequate sleep. In addition to the cranky, lethargic feeling that comes with a restless night, this lack of sleep puts us at a higher risk for a number of health issues such as heart disease, COPD, cancer and depression. So what’s stopping us from getting that good rest? Stress, lack of exercise, obesity, and smoking are among some common factors that the CDC cites. Setting (and sticking to) good bedtime routines and creating the ideal sleep environment are also important and among the easier aspects to address when searching for sleep solutions. If we consider some of the common sleep disruptors we can best address what makes for an ideal sleep environment. One major disruptor is temperature. A lower body temperature signals the brain that it’s time to sleep and conversely, a raise in our internal temperature moves the body into a state of alertness. Raising our body temperature via late-day exercise, exposure to the short wavelength-enriched light from electronic devices, and sleeping in a warm room and heat-retaining bedding all have a significant effect on our circadian rhythms. In addition to temperature, a reduction of oxygen to the brain during sleep can leave you feeling unrested and forgetful during HOME fall-winter 2018 26 COASTAL & GARDEN
the day in the short term, and with serious health issues in the long term. Reduced oxygen uptake can be caused by drinking alcohol, smoking and obesity but also happens naturally as the upper airway relaxes during sleep. Some are particularly prone to snoring and sleep apnea when the airway relaxes and when the head and neck are not properly supported this restricts airflow even more. The right height and firmness of pillow for your body and preferred sleeping positions will properly support the head and neck and is the first step in creating the ideal alignment for your body during sleep. This not only enables optimal air flow but assists in reducing gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) and chronic back, neck and shoulder pain. Your pillow and mattress should work together to support your body and create a neutral sleep position - one where your spine is straight from head to hip. To do this, your mattress should offer targeted support where needed while yielding to reduce pressure on shoulders and hips. With the right sleep environment of ideal temperature, deep easy breathing and proper body alignment you are well on your way to a restorative and restful sleep. Visit SC41 Furniture to learn how you can create your ideal sleeping environment with the Oxygen Pillow for proper head and neck support, the latex sleep wedge to help alleviate GERD, wool comforters to regulate body temperature and mattresses tailored to each body to create optimal alignment and support. ZUCCHINI BASIL SPREAD INGREDIENTS olive oil for cooking 3 med zucchini, 3 1/2 cups rough chopped 1 med onion rough chopped one bunch basil 3-4 cloves garlic 1 cup grated parmesean 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice salt to taste This spread came about due to a glut of summer squash that coincided with a fancy new blender at home. Basil season, and the yearly garlic harvest played their part, as well. This spread has been in regular rotation since its conception early this year, as zucchini season really came into force. But it isn’t just a way to use up zucchini, or hide it. It’s delicious in its own right. The flavor is, of course, similar to pesto, but the squash adds
DIRECTIONS Roughly chop the onion and summer squash. Drizzle olive oil into a pan, and sauté the onions over high heat until they begin to turn golden, and have some darker edges. Add the squash, and cook another 3-4 minutes, until softened slightly, and browned in spots. Place the cooked vegetables in the blender, and blend until the texture is smooth and flows easily through the blender. Remove the basil leaves from their stems, and crush the garlic cloves and remove the papery peel. Add basil and garlic to the blender, along with the grated cheese and lemon juice. Process until smooth, and taste. Add salt, if desired, or another squeeze of lemon. This spread is lovely served still warm from the cooking process, but can be served cool, as well. body and lightness to the combination, mellowing and stretching the flavors of basil and parmesan. We’ve used it all sorts of ways; as a sauce for pasta, or as a dip for fresh veg. A smear of this on a plate makes a lovely bed for grilled vegetables, (including, yes, zucchini) and it is delightful, too, tossed with dry farmed tomatoes. Makes about 1 quart.

PREPARING AN EMERGENCY PLAN
FOR YOUR UNIQUE NEEDS
D iscuss your plan. Talk about preparedness with friends, neighbors and family members. Contact your city or county emergency management office as well as service providers, such as meals programs and temporary housing. Discussing the topic can help you create a support network, find local resources for preparation and identify contents for a custom emergency kit.
P rep for power outages. Ask your health care providers about how to prepare for power outages, especially if you depend on medical devices that use electricity, such as oxygen, dialysis or a power wheelchair. Write down your plan, along with information about your devices, and keep a copy in your emergency kit.
M ake a list of all medications and medical supplies. Keep a list of your medicines, including dosages and allergies, along with other essential supplies like extra eyeglasses, hearing-aid batteries and at least a week’s supply of all prescription medicines in your emergency kit.
P lan for transportation. Have a plan in place in case you need to evacuate or get to health care services during an emergency. Know what equipment you need and how you will transport it. Perhaps a neighbor or family member can include you in their evacuation plans. Set this up beforehand and plan how to coordinate in the event of a disaster.
This is particularly true for older people and people with disabilities. Health issues, mobility concerns and use of assistive devices can create additional challenges during emergencies. However, there are simple steps everyone can take to prepare now for what may come later.
P lan for pets and service animals. Include food, medications and other supplies your pets may need in your emergency kit, too.
HOME fall-winter 2018 30 COASTAL & GARDEN
P ack the essentials. In addition to your medical information and needs, don’t forget essentials such as non-perishable food, water, a weather radio, a flashlight, extra batteries, blankets, cash, extra clothing and personal hygiene items. Keep your emergency kit in an easy-to-access location.
Learn more about preparedness at acl.gov/programs/emergency-preparedness. Family Features • Photo courtesy of Getty Images
C reate a contact list. Make a list of people and places you can turn to for support in an emergency, including people you may need to help or notify of your safety. Include phone numbers, email addresses and physical addresses. Also include insurance providers, health care professionals and medical supply companies. Keep one copy on hand and put another copy in a watertight container in your emergency kit.
Disasters such as earthquakes, floods, fires and other emergency situations are all too common these days. In fact, about 4 out of 5 Americans live in counties hit by weather events since 2007, according to disaster declaration data from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). That illustrates how these events can impact nearly everyone and the importance of having a plan.

Dominican Hospital is in the midst of transforming four areas into healing courtyards and gardens with the recent opening of the Monterey Peninsula Foundation Rehabilitation Garden and the Norman and Maureen Benito Surgery Courtyard. The Healing Courtyards Initiative transforms four Dignity Health Dominican Hospital outdoor courtyards into tranquil, green spaces to reduce stress and promote healing for patients, staff, and visitors. Research supports that access to a garden can speed up healing from surgery and infections and reduce the need for pain medications. We currently have 90 percent of the funds raised. Please join us in our efforts by making a gift to complete the gardens. Pam and Nello Santacroce have been an integral part of the Hospital’s evolution for decades. Pam was recruited by one of the Sisters of Dominican—as a nurse, administrator, serving as a member of the Dominican Hospital Board and now the Foundation Board.
Pam Santacroce made a substantial donation to Dominican’s Healing Courtyards Initiative naming the meditation garden in honor of her husband Nello. Her significant gift provides patients and staff with a sense of peace and serves as a symbol of the hospital’s focus on what matters most. “It has been an adventure to have lived with Nello, and to have leapt forward with Dominican Hospital,” says Pam. “They have both been an inspiration to me.”
“All hospitals are shining stars,” says Pam, “But Dominican Hospital truly has a heart.” For more information contact Beverly Grova 831.462.7712 or email Beverly.Grova@DignityHealth.org View the complete Healing Courtyard Master Plan at fall-winter 2018 supportdominican.org

These chemicals are important neurotransmitters, though lesser-known than dopamine and serotonin. They are your endocannabinoids… and they explain why cannabis can work in so many ways! Because, you see, receptors for endocannabinoids are shaped just right for cannabinoids, the molecules that cannabis makes for its own well-being. Cannabis is unique among medicinal plants because its benefits are especially wide-ranging. This popular plant may perk you up, yet cannabis can also promote sleep. It can stimulate appetite, but it can suppress appetite too. What explains the opposite benefits? Your endocannabinoid system!
ABOUT ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEMS Humans and most other animals have endocannabinoid systems (ECS). Most adults didn’t learn about their own ECS in high school. Researchers didn’t identify it until the 1990s.
THE MAIN ECS SETUP: RECEPTORS & CHEMICALS Your ECS runs throughout your body. Scientists have found endocannabinoid receptors in the brain and many other organs, connective tissue, glands and immune cells. Some receptors are mostly in the central nervous system, and others are distributed further from your core. Endocannabinoid receptors are also part of breastmilk. Three types of endocannabinoid receptors are known: CB1 Cannabinoid receptor 1 CB2 Cannabinoid receptor 2 GPR55 G protein-coupled receptor 55 These receptors are shaped to hold at least two chemical compounds that our bodies produce: Anandamide N-arachidonoylethanolamine or AEA 2-arachidonoglycerol HOME fall-winter 2018 32 COASTAL & GARDEN
Sometimes what’s good for the plant is good for the person too.
WHAT THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM DOES Endocannabinoids help manage fundamental processes of your mind and body. By binding to receptors, they trigger the release of chemicals that influence appetite, immune response, memory, mood, pain sensation, temperature regulation and more. When your body’s endocannabinoid supply is depleted, compounds from cannabis and other plants can substitute. They help control inflammation, support alertness and accomplish other tasks. The best-known “endocannabinoid substitute” is delta-9 THC, which may have psychoactive effects. Another example is CBD, which is not psychoactive. Also potentially effective are terpenes such as pinene and eucalyptol. These compounds are present in cannabis and many common organic herbs, fruits and vegetables. A NON–INTOXICATING MARIJUANA EXTRACT Cannabidiol (CBD) oil has become the popular new product in states that have legalized medical marijuana. The non-intoxicating marijuana extract is being credited with helping treat a host of medical problems – everything from epileptic seizures to anxiety to inflammation to sleeplessness.
What Is CBD? – It’s short for cannabidiol, a natural compound extracted from the flowers and buds of marijuana or hemp plants. It does not produce intoxication; marijuana’s high is caused by the chemical tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). How Do You Take It? – You can take CBD oil by itself by mouth, or use one of the many products in which it is an ingredient. These include pills, chewable gels, tinctures you drop under your tongue, vape cartridges you breathe in, creams on your skin, and foods like cookies and chocolate bars. Does It Make You High? – CBD doesn’t, THC is the chemical that does. If you use a CBD product, check the label and make sure that’s the only cannabinoid listed. Is It Addictive? – CBD oil is not. CBD products that also have THC can be. The key is to know the source and check the ingredients and the amounts so you know exactly what you’re using. The caution is that the amount and quality of CBD in these products can be very different and that it is difficult to find products that have no THC. Is CBD FDA Approved? – The FDA has approved only one CBD-based drug to treat two rare types of epilepsy: Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. It’s approved for adults and children over age 2. The FDA has not yet stepped in to regulate products like CBD oil. States are struggling to put regulations in place.
Can It Ease Pain? – Scientists are working to see if helps with arthritis, helps relieve nerve pain (also called neuropathy) and helps to relieve muscle spasms linked to multiple sclerosis. More research is needed. Does It Help Inflammation? – Early studies show CBD may help especially if it’s related to arthritis, MS, diabetes, or Alzheimer’s. Scientists are trying to prove if and how it works. Is It Good for Your Skin? – CBD might be a treatment for acne. It seems to help with both the inflammation that leads to breakouts and reduce the amount of fatty acids in the blood. It may also protect skin cells from damage. Are There Side Effects? – CBD doesn’t seem to cause serious side effects. When used to treat epilepsy or psychotic disorders, people reported tiredness, diarrhea, and changes in appetite. But CBD can affect how other medications work, so be sure to tell your doctor about everything you take, including vitamins and supplements.
For recreational purposes the number and variety of CBD products available at our local Cannabis dispensaries is amazing. Everything from brownies and cookies to vape cartridges and skin creams are there to select from. Each of these selections has different proportions of CBD and most also have a significant percentage of THC. If you are taking CBD for medical purposes, seek out a doctor who has knowledge about the extract and its uses to monitor your condition. GREYWATER IRRIGATION PREVENTS WATER AND MONEY FROM GOING DOWN THE DRAIN
Have you ever watched the spiraling bathwater go down the drain and wished it could be used to water the garden? Your wish for that “grey water” can be a reality! Since 2009 state plumbing codes have been changed to make greywater systems much easier and cost effective to install.
methods, adding wood chips to small dug out ditches around plants, acts as a treatment system that digests organic debris, soap, and any potential pathogens (bad bacteria). Landscapes that are flat or uphill from the greywater source may require an effluent pump system.
Greywater is wash and rinse water from washing machines, showers, bathtubs and bathroom sinks that is reusable out in your landscape. It is not water from kitchen sinks, dishwashers or toilets.
A Laundry to Landscape system does not require a permit to build if its meets code guidelines. It’s the easiest to install, change or remove, and only requires about $150 dollars for the basic starter kit. A family of four can produce about 120 gallons of laundry greywater per week with a high efficiency washer. That’s a lot of water that can go out to perennial plants, like bushes and fruit trees, as well as other edible plants (if they don’t touch the greywater). It’s a great feeling knowing that your washing machine is not only cleaning your clothes but also watering your plants! There are Laundry-to-Landscape classes and workshops every year through Cabrillo College Extension Program.
Greywater reuse will stretch your water dollar by lowering the amount of potable water needed out in the landscape. The most reliable, economical, and low-maintenance greywater systems require no pumps, filters, or storage tanks. Greywater can be piped directly to the landscape and be discharged into mulch basins around plants. Laundry-to-landscape systems use the clothes washer’s internal pump to push greywater to the landscape, whereas branched drain systems from bathroom sinks, showers, and tubs, rely on gravity to send greywater outside. Mulch Magic! Greywater needs to be dispersed under at least two inches of cover and cannot be sprayed into the air. For both
HOME fall-winter 2018 36 COASTAL & GARDEN
Incentives for greywater installations are currently offered by five water agencies in Santa Cruz County, including the Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency. Soquel Creek Water District (serving Soquel, Capitola, Aptos and La Selva Beach) recently
HOME 37 fall-winter 2018 COASTAL & GARDEN
increased their greywater rebate to $400 for a “laundry to landscape” system and up to $1000 for “dual-plumbed” bath shower and bathroom sink systems. See www.watersavingtips. org for an up-to-date listing of local rebates.
GET ON THE GREYWATER MAP!
The Central Coast Greywater Alliance, made up of individuals, businesses and local agencies, has worked with the State to adopt appropriate greywater codes and promote this green practice. The alliance maintains a website at www.centralcoastgreywater. org. Many people who have installed a greywater system have included their homes on the Alliance installation map as a way to show civic pride for saving water. You too can join this growing movement that will not only save you money, but contribute to the sustainability of our shared water supplies instead of having it just swirl down the drain!
https://centralcoastgreywater.org/1000-system-challenge
SOME IMPORTANT CODE REQUIREMENTS FOR USING GREYWATER ARE: • The greywater must not leave the property where it came from or come within 100 feet of any creek, wetland, or waterway. This may include turning the system off during the rainy season if it overflows out of mulch basins or creates ponding or pooling on the surface of the soil.
• The greywater system design must include an accessible, clearly
labeled 3-port valve that diverts the greywater back to the building sewer or septic.
• Each release point of the greywater irrigation system must be covered with at least two inches of mulch, rock, soil, or a soil shield.
• No greywater system can be connected to a potable (i.e. drinking) water system to prevent contamination of drinking water supplies.
• Other important considerations are: • Do not store the greywater. • In order to protect soil and plants, laundry detergents and other laundry
products must be free of sodium (salt), boron (e.g. borax soap) and petroleum distillates. That means greywater-compatible soaps are nontoxic for you and your family.
• If you use a water softener at your home, you will need to use potassium chloride as the brine medium instead of sodium (salt).

PERFECTION IN YOUR NEW ROOM
hen you painted the rooms in your house five years ago, you were in love with the décor and wall colors. What you loved then now seems outdated and boring, right? Time for a change! With some paint and new throw pillows you can change the whole look and feel of the room. The colors and decor in your home are a reflection of your personality. Make it yours! The first thing to do is go pillow shopping. You don’t have to decide on your colors before you leave the house, browsing around for pillows will help you choose. The number of pillows you get depends on where they will go. If you have a couch that is used often, don’t put a lot so people will have a place to sit. Another room might not be used as much so pile them on! A big basket full of pillows also makes for a colorful accessory point. If you are getting pillows for a busy room, make sure they have removable covers for laundering. Vary your pillows by size, texture, print, and style for the most eye pleasing arrangement. Your pillows do not have to match but should blend and work together. You can choose a few pillows that match or five pillows in five different fabrics, but make sure there’s at least one color in common. You can also add a color coordinated throw for additional color and style. Consider the texture of the throw as well. If you’re on a small budget, consider buying pillow covers for HOME fall-winter 2018 40 COASTAL & GARDEN
your existing pillows. They are inexpensive, are easy put on, and voilà, a new look! If you enjoy sewing, make you own covers. It doesn’t take much fabric to create a pillow cover and most fabric stores have a corner with discount fabrics. You can also use fabric placemats for covers and large dinner napkins. Be creative! Always remember to buy your fabric two inches bigger all the way around to allow for seams and plumpness. Take your pillows with you to pick your paint. Choose a color or colors that complement the entire pile or pick one color from your favorite pillow. When choosing paint colors, a couple of things you should take into consideration are the size of the room and the natural light. Paint color and light go hand in hand. The color you choose will look different depending on the light exposure in the room. Light is never consistent and how it shines depends entirely on time of day and the conditions outside. The light of north-facing rooms is less direct throughout the day, and consistently cooler. Southern-facing rooms get more light throughout the day and are the sunniest place in the home. East facing rooms get most light in the morning. As the sun sets, west-facing rooms benefit
from its rays. While on the dim side in the morning, the same room will have a warm glow in the evening. If you’re dealing with a small room and want it to seem larger, there are a few tricks. Painting one wall in a stronger color than the others creates an optical illusion that there’s actually more space in the room. This strategy can also create a natural focal point, which makes arranging furniture and other decor items easier. Painting walls, trim, and details in different shades from the same color palette will make your whole space look larger. Paint the ceiling a lighter color. Once you have painted and placed all pillows, bring all the accessories back into the room. Since the room has changed your accessories may not look great where they were previously but might look better in a new space in the room. Move things around until it all looks perfect. Your new room will uplift your mood, first, because it looks fabulous and second, you did it yourself!

After we moved from Japan thirty years ago, our diet transitioned from traditional Japanese to one of more Western style. Without the rich probiotics commonly found in traditional Japanese food, we both began seeing signs of various digestion related health problems over time. When we met 16 years ago, our motivation to improve our families’ health and wellbeing became our everyday mission, sparking the desire to spread the word of the importance of fermented foods and the profound effects on the body. We decided to expand our production of our handmade miso to share this superfood with you! The two of us began the fermented food workshop out of our home kitchens. Since then, we have been holding classes at New Leaf Community Market on the Westside and through Cabrillo Extension Program. We have also been handcrafting thousands of pounds of miso at the El Pajaro Commercial Kitchen Incubator for Hakouya’s Probiotic Miso Dressing. Each batch of miso must ferment for at least five months to achieve the salty, rich flavor before it is ready to be made into dressing. Our handmade miso itself is packed with protein, vitamins, minerals and probiotics. Our probiotic miso dressing offers valuable enzymes with major health benefits. The main ingredient of miso paste, koji, is a natural and beneficial fungus that is found in many traditional condiments such as miso, soy sauce, sake and mirin. Not only does koji have the most enzymes of all probiotic foods, but it boosts the nutritional content of foods and promotes extended preservation. Other miso in stores lose many valuable enzymes because the fermentation process is halted before packaging. We keep all major enzymes of Koji as it breaks down fat and fiber, protein down into umami, and starch into sweetness.
THE MAJOR HEALTH BENEFITS OF KOJI ARE:
• Antioxidant • Immune system support • Aids in the digestion and absorption of other foods • Reduces allergy symptoms • Improve metabolism • Reduces risk of breast, prostate, lung and colon cancers • Reduces radiation effects by discharging it from the body
HOME fall-winter 2018 42 COASTAL & GARDEN
We use our dressing as a sweet and tangy addition for any meal- including as a substitute for mayonnaise or as a marinade on any veggies, tofu, fish and meat. One of our favorites is to mash a couple of spoonfuls with avocado for the perfect spread! You will see our miso dressing in the refrigerator section at our local stores very soon.

FLEA CONTROL FOR CATS AND DOGS
If you own animals most of us know what fleas are, although there are many varieties. However incase you don’t fleas are small wingless insects that use their specialized mouth to pierce the skin and siphon blood from their host. When a flea bites, it injects a small amount of saliva into the skin to prevent the blood from coagulating. Some animals become sensitized to flea saliva and animals that are allergic can have severe itching and scratching from a single bite. Flea allergy dermatitis is the most common disease among dogs. Currently the most popular flea control products kill adult fleas (adulticide). They are applied topically and work rapidly. Popular topical products utilize Fipronil which is the key ingredient and Top Spot and Imidacloprid which are in Advantage®, the most popular product on the market.
HOW TO PREVENT A FLEA INFESTATION When it comes to fleas, preventing an infestation is much easier than treating one. Because pets are fleas’ main ticket inside your home (and their trusty food sources, to boot), preventing your pet from catching fleas is the best way to keep your pet and home protected. Regular use of a flea preventive helps your pet stay happy, healthy, and flea-free. One popular preventive is the flea collar. The Zodiac® Flea & Tick Collar comes in several variations depending on your pet’s size, whether he or she is a dog or a cat. Flea collars offer fast-acting, long-lasting and convenient protection against fleas and other pests. The best way to prevent fleas is by using topical preventives. These products, such as Zodiac® Spot On® Flea & Tick Control products, are highly effective ways to keep your pet from getting fleas. Many topical preventives kill adult fleas with an adulticide, and kill flea eggs and larvae with an insect-growth regulator (IGR).
FLEA PREVENTION SAFETY When using preventive solutions, remember three important guidelines so that your pet can enjoy worry-free protection: Always choose a HOME fall-winter 2018 46 COASTAL & GARDEN
product made for your pet. Flea preventives made for dogs, for example, may be harmful to cats. Second, only use one flea and tick product at a time. Whether products are intended for prevention or treatment, combining them could harm your pet. Third, always follow the package instructions for use. Consult with your veterinarian to determine which flea and tick control products are best for you. The choice of flea control will depend on your climate, environment, your pet’s activities, and potential for exposure. However, with consistent use, it is almost always possible to control your flea problem. Using these products throughout the year typically will eliminate the need for regular insecticidal use
Stop by Corralitos Feed and Pet Supply for expert advice on any of the above-mentioned products. Advantage from Bayer® is applied topically on both dogs and cats and seems to be very well-tolerated by sensitive cats. Advantage kills fleas within 24 hours and 100% protection can be maintained for cats for 21 days and 90% protection can be maintained for dogs for 28 days. Advantage is susceptible to washing off so dogs that are active outdoors and dogs that swim or must be bathed frequently should be re-treated frequently. Up to weekly re-treatment is allowed. The Imidacloprid in Advantage does not affect ticks, but K-9Advantix, with Permethrin does. K9 Advantix is only labeled for once a month K9 Advantix is ONLY FOR USE WITH DOGS and MUST NOT BE ADMINISTERED TO CATS. Another great product is Adams Plus Flea and Tick Spray. This spray provides quick relief from biting fleas and continually kills flea eggs laid on the animal, breaking the flea life cycle. The elimination of both adult fleas and flea eggs is important because adult fleas live on your pet, causing discomfort and skin irritation, while the vast number of eggs they lay fall off and develop in your house.
