Chief Escalante was the Investigations Commander and Co-Commander of their Emergency Services Unit Tactical Team.

For 2-1/2 years, he served as Deputy Chief of Police for the Watsonville Police Department where he oversaw the Support Services Division. Chief Escalante is a court-recognized expert in gang and narcotic investigations.

Chief Escalante has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from San Jose State University, a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from University of Phoenix, and an Associate of Science Degree from Cabrillo Junior College. He is

a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

Chief Escalante is an active committee member of the California Police Chief’s Association Law & Legislative Committee and the State Firearms Committee. He is the current Board President for Janus of Santa Cruz, a drug and alcohol treatment facility in Santa Cruz County and is the interim President for the Capitola Public Safety Foundation. Chief Escalante has served as a panel member for Dominican Hospital regarding the Methamphetamine Epidemic in Santa Cruz County, and is a strong advocate for Women’s Crisis Support in Santa Cruz County.

His wife Cathie is a self-employed businesswoman in Capitola and their 11-year-old son attends Twin Lakes Christian School. A lifelong resident of Santa Cruz County, they reside in Live Oak. Woman of the Year Christine McBroom hristine McBroom is the owner and financial advisor at Lanai Financial Solutions. She has a Master’s Degree from George Mason University, a Bachelor’s Degree from Long Island University, Southampton College. She holds professional designations of Series 7 and Series 66 licenses as well as her AAMS®, the Accredited Asset Management Specialist designation.

Christine has been a life-long visitor to Capitola. Each summer and on winter break, Christine McBroom she visited her great aunt Mimi (Amy Tognazzini) who has lived here in Capitola for over 40 years. Christine only dreamed

that she could one day live in Capitola.

Her dream became a reality in 2008 when it came time to begin her financial services business and be closer to her favorite Aunt Mimi.

Capitola welcomed her with open arms. When she moved here, her life changed for the better. She met her husband, Rory, at a block party on Gilroy Drive in Capitola where (fast forward 2 yrs) they purchased a home. They have built both their private and professional lives in Capitola where Christine practices her passion in life, which is helping people create their financial goals and then achieve them.

Christine has also dedicated herself to her community. She has sat on the board of the Capitola Begonia Festival from 20082011, is currently on the Capitola-Soquel Chamber Board and is serving as the board’s chairperson. She’s been a member and chairperson of the Capitola Finance Advisory Committee for the past four years and is the treasurer and executive board member of the Capitola Public Safety Foundation. This past year she was appointed Capitola City Treasurer. It is for these many contributions to Capitola that she deserves the Chamber’s Woman of the Year award.

Volunteer of the Year Kim Hogan im Hogan came to Capitola in 2002 and began her involvement in Community Service about three years later as a means of making new friends. Starting with a small role in the Begonia Festival, Kim later accepted service positions with the Volunteer in Police Services, the Capitola Soquel Chamber Board of Directors, the Art & Cultural Commission, and the

Capitola Public Safety Foundation Board.

These positions began a full career of volunteer services which included not only Capitola’s Begonia Festival, but Wharf to Wharf, Safe Ride Home on New Year’s Eve, Capitola Art & Wine Festival, Bikes on the Bay, Classic Rod & Custom Car Show, and the Capitola Kim Hogan Public Safety Foundation Golf Tournament. She has not only achieved the goal of making new friends but has provided herself and many others the opportunity to participate in some amazing and fun events.

When Kim was asked how she feels about volunteer services, “The original goal of making new friends ended up with the accumulation of a whole City of friends. The years have been filled with many opportunities to be of service to members of the community. And one of the best keys to a happy life is through service.

I am a happy person.”

Community Spirit Michaella Olavarri began my venture in the Capitola Village several years ago by opening the Capitola Coffee Roasters. Feeding people is something I truly enjoy,” Michaella said.

“After the 2011 flood in the Village I was one of about two businesses that stayed open. My son and I soon realized there were no bathrooms available for workers doing cleanup night and day. For two days, we stayed open 24 hours, taking shifts so bathrooms would be available.

We gave coffee to all the business owners until their shops reopened, as well as to the people who were working diligently to save their homes.

Macy’s ‘Secret Garden’ Fundraising Program Recipient In Capitola

M

acy’s partners with the National Recreation and Park Association to raise funds for local parks nationwide, with every dollar matched by Macy’s, up to $250,000 Capitola, Ca – Jade Street Park has been selected for “Heart Your Park,” a program introduced as part of Macy’s “Secret Garden” campaign, that aims to raise awareness and dollars for local parks across the country. From March 7 to March 31, customers at Macy’s Capitola can donate $1 or more at the register, with 100 percent of the donations benefiting Jade Street Park. To further spread the love, Macy’s will match the total customer donation across all stores, dollar for dollar, up to $250,000 in total.

Jade Street Park is one of more than 550 parks nationwide that will benefit from Macy’s “Heart Your Park” this spring. In partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), the national non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of community parks, recreation and conservation, Macy’s stores across the country have each selected a local park or green space in their community to support through the program. Donations will go toward making improvements, such as maintaining

trails, playgrounds, and ball fields, and everything in between.

Jade Street Park is owned by the Soquel Union School District, and operated by the City of Capitola.

“Annual Awards” from page 5 “When my lease in the Village wasn’t renewed, I took the opportunity to work as a pastry chef in San Francisco. In September 2012, I moved into the Capitola Book Café.

Then in March of 2013, I was diagnosed with cancer. My hat is off to all cancer survivors.

It takes everything you have to fight. Of all the challenges I have faced, this was one of my most difficult.

In October I ran my first Halfmarathon.

The feeling of completing the race, after being so sick, was quite surreal.

“I absolutely loved the year and Michaella Olavarri a half I spent (at the Capitola Book Café.) I will miss that place tremendously. The people of Capitola have been an important part of my life.”

The Chamber recognizes Michaella as a survivor. She continues to face challenges head on and is a true warrior in the world. n

At the event, the 2014 Al Smith Friend of Agriculture award was presented to Patrice Edwards, Publisher of Times Publishing Group, Inc. Edwards said, “This is a great honor. I want to thank the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau and Agri-Culture. I love agriculture and the hard work of all those who make it their profession. We try to let our community know how fortunate we are to be a part of this industry and this way of life, which we celebrate through the Agricultural History Project and each year at the County Fair. This award was a complete surprise. I had no idea. I found out after the presentation that my family and some of my friends had known about this for the past month. It’s truly humbling.”

The annual event is coordinated by the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau and the educational organization Agri-Culture.

This year’s presenter was H.A. Rider and Sons owner Tom Rider who was the 2013 award recipient.

This award is named after Al Smith who was the founder of Orchard Supply Hardware and who donated 3,000 acres (Swanton Pacific Ranch) on our north coast to Cal Poly.

The ranch has row crops, timber and even a one-third-scale railroad, which was Al’s hobby. The Al Smith Award, a piece of redwood with a train depicted on it, is presented annually to an individual, business or organization not involved in production agriculture but has done much for the industry.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz County is celebrating its 31st year hosting the popular Bowl for Kids’ Sake Event at the Boardwalk Bowl in Santa Cruz on May 3 and 4. Over 600 bowlers will sign up at www. santacruzmentor.org and bowl together to fundraise for the at-risk youth in our county.

Since 1982, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz County has matched 4,825 at-risk youth with a Big Brother or Big Sister in a mentoring relationship. During a one-year period, we work with over 700 people. This includes all our kids and their families, the Bigs, the volunteers, the youth in our Watsonville After-school Enrichment and Mentoring program, and all the potential families and youth waiting for a mentoring relationship.

All of the proceeds from the annual Bowl-athon go directly to the development of long lasting mentoring relationships for the at-risk youth in our county.

Over the 31 years, Bowl for Kids’ Sake has hosted 15,500 bowlers and provided fun for over 100 teams per year. Approxi-

mately 4,500 businesses have come to us to support our programs with event sponsorships, bowling teams, and donations.

In the coming weeks we anticipate 120 teams to sign up to bowl with friends, family, coworkers, and community builders.

Big Brothers Big Sisters continues to sign up individuals and new groups every day. Teams consist of five members with each bowler aiming for a $120 pledge to the agency. Individuals raising $120 or more receive event t-shirts. Individuals that raise above $200 will receive a sweatshirt. And those that raise above $250 in pre-collected pledges will receive a grab bag prize. Big Brothers Big Sisters also has exciting Grand Prizes for top revenue producers. n ••• Recent surveys of our kids indicate that after one year of being matched in a mentoring relationship:

• 78 percent believe that their friendships have improved • 67 percent believe that their family relationships have improved • 89 percent believe that their interest in school has improved • 67 percent believe that their grades have improved.

This program seeks to keep our at-risk youth in school, away from drugs and alcohol, out of prison, and ultimately on the right path towards a positive and healthy future.

The public is invited to bring gently used household items such as clothing, shoes, accessories, small house wares and electronics to the Walgreens parking lot on Soquel Avenue during the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day. Volunteers will help load all items into the 28-foot trailer provided by Goodwill.

Every filled trailer will generate $1,000 for the Santa Cruz SPCA. Items will also be happily accepted at the shelter location, 2685 Chanticleer Avenue, before the event date and will be added to the trailer at the appropriate time

by SPCA staff and volunteers.

Last year, residents were able to fill over two trailers, which resulted in a check

for over $2,000 from Goodwill Industries.

This year, the SPCA hopes to fill at least one whole trailer a day.

“This is an extremely generous gesture from one fellow non-profit organization to another and we sincerely appreciate the Goodwill, pun intended,” said Lisa Carter, the director of the Santa Cruz SPCA. Thursday April 17, Friday April 18 and Saturday April 19, each day 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Frederick Dame Gives Lecture and Tasting on Blind Varietal Identification at Sesnon House

abrillo College today announces that Frederick Dame, Master Sommelier and President of the Court of Master Sommeliers Worldwide who was featured in ‘Somm,’ the recent documentary by Jason Wise about preparing for the master sommelier exam, will deliver a presentation and tasting seminar to Cabrillo Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management in the Sesnon House. The event is limited to Culinary Arts students and is not open to the public.

Dame, the first American to have served as president of the Court of Master Sommeliers and currently the Vice President of Prestige Accounts at Southern Wine and Spirits of California, will be describing and demonstrating to students his method of blind varietal identification. Southern Wine and Spirits is donating the wine for the tasting lecture and demonstration. The Master Sommelier certification is a high honor held by a select few in the world, that includes proven mastery of wine, spirits, cigars and table service, as well as mastery of wine and food pairings.

“We are honored to bring Frederick Dame to share his talent with students in

Cabrillo’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management program,” said Sue Slater, Catering and Wine Instructor. “Fred is known for his incredible palette and a photographic memory – he passed the wine portion of the master sommelier program by identifying five of six wines by smell only – our students are very much looking forward to this lecture and demonstration, and we are grateful to Southern Wine and Spirits for the wine donation that will make this special event possible.”

Influenced by an overwhelming student demand, the wine program at Cabrillo College has recently been restarted.

This spring semester, two wine classes are being offered, including Wine and Wine Service (CAHM 172A), Sensory Evaluation of Wine Varietals (CAHM 172B), and Wines of California (CAHM 179). Slater is in the process of working on creating two skills certificates and an associate’s degree for the wine program at Cabrillo College.

Several students who have taken Slater’s wine courses at Cabrillo College have left their current fields to pursue careers in the local wine industry.

“I started taking Cabrillo’s wine classes in 2006, ‘just for fun’ with good friends - that first day, we quickly decided it was more than that - we were in it to win it, and studied daily – at the time, I owned a coffee shop,” said Cathy Bentley, former Cabrillo student. “Three years and 10 wine classes later I sold my coffee shop and went into the wine industry full time. After working at Silver Mountain and MJA Vineyards, I created Wineaux Times, a marketing and events consulting business for the wine industry, and currently I’m the Sales Manager for Guurgle, a social media wine application. I’m also studying for the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) exam, and

I make wine with a wine co-op of people from the Cabrillo Wine Program. Our label is called Back Door Cellars and we produce 400 cases each year. Next year, I’ll be teaching the Tasting Room Management course at Cabrillo College.”

For Cabrillo’s Summer Session, Slater will offer a course on French Sparkling Wine & Champagne Tuesday evenings from 6-9 p.m., and in Fall Semester 2014 Slater will expand the program to include a Viticulture class. Dame was the first American to pass all three parts of the Master Sommelier Diploma Exam in a single year. He also scored the top in his class, earning him the Krug Cup of the British Guild of Sommeliers in 1984. Cabrillo to Nisene Marks Park trail opens to hikers, runners and bicyclists

T

he Cabrillo Connection trail will open to the public on Friday, March 28, 2014 at daybreak. This new County-owned trail will provide an easily accessible route between Cabrillo College and the main western multiuse trail into The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park, and can be used by hikers, runners, leashed dogs and their owners, students, and bicyclists from daybreak to dusk seven days/week.

An event to celebrate the opening of the Cabrillo Connection will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 1p.m.

Everyone, including kids, bikers, and leashed dogs, is encouraged to show up with drums, kazoos, horns and other noise-makers for a celebratory parade through the moderately-challenging, mile long trail as it crosses through grasslands and corridors of oaks, madrones, and firs. The event on Saturday will start at Kamian Way off Danube Dr. in the Vienna Woods neighborhood in Aptos.

The Cabrillo Connection is a Santa Cruz County trail easement that was obtained in 2008 as a settlement between the County and the owners/developers of the privately owned acreage to allow

the owners to secure approval for their hillside home. In return, the owners agreed to provide the 16-foot wide trail easement through their property to the County.

For over 60 years hikers, bikers and dog walkers used the many trails that cut through the acreage to access the key western entrance to the Nisene Marks State Park until the property was purchased by the developers and access was denied. Now, thanks to the dedication and determination of a number of people this new County trail is a reality and open for public use. Members of Nisene2Sea, and, in particular, Kathryn Britton, one of the organization’s founders, have worked tirelessly for this access trail, as did former Supervisor Ellen Pirie and her analyst, Robin Musitelli, who both spent years negotiating with the owners to establish and secure the trail route.

hink back … Try to remember what childhood experiences had the most influence on you as an adult. Was it your religious community? Holidays with your extended family? Participation in a sport? Or was it a club or teacher or coach at school that had a lasting, positive impact on you?

For generations of the Teel family, that childhood experience has always been participation in summer camp. “No doubt about it, we’re a camping family,” chuckles Bob Teel, who, with his wife, Shirley, has lived in Flat Rock, North Carolina, since 1988.

Bob discovered summer camp in 1938 when he was nine, and he tagged along with friends to visit their cousins at a YMCA

camp near Joplin, Missouri. “As soon as I saw it I was sold. I could hardly wait to go the next summer.” His parents agreed to pay the $1-a- day fee, and Bob learned to ride a horse, paddle a canoe, shoot a rifle, play softball, and to live in close proximity with children he’d never met before. He later translated his newfound skills into a summer job as a counselor at a camp in Connecticut.

“The camaraderie at camp became very, very important to me, and the leaders had a tremendous influence on my life. My camp experience in the Ozark Mountains in the late 1930s was one of the highlights of my life, so it was no problem for me and my wife to make sure our children had the same opportunity,” Bob recalls.

Sending five children to camp each summer was no small commitment, but the Teels made it a priority. After a few summers of YMCA programs, the two boys attended camp at Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana, and the girls headed east to Camp Greystone in Tuxedo, North Carolina.

“Looking back on my childhood, I realize that attending camp was certainly one of the most meaningful experiences of my life,” says Stephanie Robinson of Birmingham, Alabama, the Teel’s second daughter. “Getting out of the school setting meant there was no academic pressure, no cliques or worries about clothes, but rather the emphasis was what was going on inside us, trying new things, and having fun,” she says. “And the counselors, all great college kids, emphasized the things my parents had tried to teach me, but it was easier hearing it from them,” she laughs.

Stephanie attended Camp Greystone for two years and Camp Kanakomo in Branson, Missouri, for one summer. She returned to Greystone as a counselor where she worked for five summers in a row. “Some of my very best friends even today are from camp. It’s meant the world to me.”

Attending summer camp meant so much to Stephanie that she and her husband, Gordie, committed to sending their four daughters, ages nine to eighteen, to camp as soon as each one was ready.

“As a mother, learning to live with and be kind to people who are different and to make new friends at summer camp are important life skills, so we make it a priority for our children,” she relates. “And as a former school teacher, I know that the children get so tired because of all the extra activities they do after school that they have a hard time appreciating any of it. At camp, you can slow down and take your time.”

Stephanie’s brother, Starr Teel, had a different camp experience than his sisters.

He attended Culver Military Academy for three summers; summers he describes as defining moments in his life. “I was a young guy in a very competitive environment, and I learned to make and live with decisions that impacted me and my team (Company) in positive ways,” Starr says.

“Culver gave me the time and

opportunity to acquire new skills and the confidence that comes with mastering each level of competence. I also learned about leadership and teamwork and gained an appreciation for how my actions can affect a larger community.”

We’re a camping family. At camp, children learn responsibility without even realizing it “Thanks to my father’s love for camping, Culver, and my other camp and counselor experiences, I now have a wonderful sense of adventure. I have always felt confident that I can make a positive difference in the world regardless of the circumstance. I firmly believe that a great camp experience uniquely equips all children to think this way.”

Starr’s childhood camp experiences

ultimately led him to move to Hendersonville, North Carolina, in order to be near one of the largest concentrations of summer camps in the country. In addition to being a director for Camp Arrowhead for Boys, Starr is an active community volunteer and was instrumental in implementing the first regional “Art Matters” program. This initiative partnered dozens of summer camps with the local art gallery to educate the community about the values of summer camping and the role that fine art and crafts play in creative child development.

Starr and his wife Virginia’s two daughters, Annie Starr, nine, and Virginia Frances, four, are already carrying on the Teel family tradition.

Annie Starr began attending day camps when she was six, and this past summer spent several weeks at both Camp Greystone and at Camp Wayfarer. “I love summer camp. My favorite thing was my cabin mates and my counselors,” offers Annie Starr happily.

The Operations Division maintains County roads, sanitation facilities, landfill facilities, and drainage facilities. Additionally, it operates the department garage, and administers both the County Parking Project and County Service Areas.

The Santa Cruz County Sanitation District is a non-profit public agency that provides sewage colJohn Presliegh lection, treatment and disposal services to the Live Oak, Capitola, Soquel, and Aptos areas. The District’s customers generate approximately 5-6 million gallons of sewage a day, which is transported to the wastewater treatment plant at Neary Lagoon, owned and operated by the City of Santa Cruz. This plant treats a total of approximately 10 million gallons of wastewater per day to a quality level that meets stringent environmental standards for discharge into Monterey Bay. The sanitary sewer system facilities include approximately 188 miles of gravity sewers, 14 miles of force main, and 35 pump stations.

There are approximately 29,000 sewer lateral connections in the Santa Cruz County Sanitation District. The Sanitation District acts as a collection system. Sort of like a “wastewater highway.” The City of Santa Cruz operates the wastewater

treatment plant. Every day millions of gallons of wastewater are sent to the municipal sewer lines to make the journey to the wastewater treatment plant. When a toilet is flushed in Aptos the wastewater travels through the underground sewer system all the way to the treatment plant where it is cleaned and discharged to the Monterey Bay. How Do We Do This? ultiple pump stations along the way move the wastewater through large sewer pipes from station to station until it makes it to the treatment plant.

Sanitation crews flush sewer lines daily to prevent stoppages. Electricians and pump technicians make sure the pumps keep moving the water. If the system fails anywhere along the way, it could cause sewer spills, damage to homes and pollute the environment.

When sewer lines need repairs or replacing the District gets to work to get it done. n the past 5 Years, the Sanitation District has replaced thousands of feet of gravity sewers, upgraded six pump stations and completed extensive projects.

4.5 million dollars in grant funds were obtained to fund significant projects that have protected the environment and improved the quality of life for residents in our community. Among the projects made possible by this funding are the Aptos Transmission Line Replacement Project, the Aptos Esplanade and Capitola Esplanade Sewer Projects. Without these upgrades, sewer lines would begin to

“Flushable” wipes are everywhere these days. Grocery store shelves are stacked with numerous brands of personal wipes and baby wipes touted as “flushable.” The problem is that while they are flushable they are not dispersible; meaning they do not breakdown in the sewer. Once the wipes leave your sewer line they end up in the public sewer line where they can get caught up in sewer pipes and cause sanitary sewer overflows in the street that eventually can pollute our creeks, rivers, and ocean.

Costs for removal and disposal are rising and these costs are eventually passed down to tax and ratepayers. You can do your part to protect our community and the environment by disposing of any type of wipe in the trash instead of flushing them down the toilet.

Women’s Lacrosse Comes to Santa Cruz O ver the past several year’s interest in women’s lacrosse has been gaining momentum across the country. The sport has taken an east to west migration with the majority of the top programs located in Mid Atlantic and New England regions.

Lacrosse is hot right now for girls. It is what soccer was 20 years.

Seizing this opportunity for women, the Santa Cruz County Warriors who have for the past several years only offered boys programs, kicked off its inaugural season for 8- 9 year old girls.

Lacrosse veterans lead the girls program from college and professional teams. Colleen Niklaus, Lauren Junker, Leah Santos and Shaydon Santos. The four coaches have taken on the task of teaching the game to this young group of athletes the basics of the game.

The league is excited to see the fastest growing sport in the US begin to take root here in Santa Cruz County. Home games are at Good Sheppard fields in Soquel playing teams from all over the bay area, including; San Francisco, Oakland, Pleasanton, Palo Alto, Menlo Park, San Jose, Saratoga.

Free Microchipping Day for Dogs

Collaboration of the Santa Cruz SPCA and Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter

T

he Santa Cruz SPCA and the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter join together to offer a day of free canine microchipping on Saturday, April 12 from 9 a.m. until noon.

Santa Cruz County recently joined a growing number of communities who now require pets to be microchipped. This collaborative event is designed to bring more lost animals home and to aid the public in compliance with this new ordinance.

Participants may bring their dogs to the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter location, 2200 7th Avenue, during event hours where experienced handlers from both shelters will complete the simple procedure. Staff will take care of the registration process, explain microchip basics and answer any questions the public may have. There are no requirements for this day of free service, everyone is welcome.

The microchips used for this event have been donated to the Santa Cruz SPCA by 24Petwatch Pet Protection Services and include a tag and lifetime registration.

Millions of cats and dogs end up at animal shelters around the US each year, a

large percentage of these animals enter the shelters as strays that go unclaimed. Microchipping is a safe, easy and effective way to quickly reunite lost pets with their owners and provides proof of ownership if a pet is ever stolen. Collars and tags can fall off or be removed, but microchips are forever and can many times be a fast ticket home if your animal ever ends up in a shelter. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association,

dogs are 2.5 times more likely to be returned to their home from a shelter if they have a registered microchip.

The microchip itself is a tiny implant, typically about the size of a grain of rice, inserted under the skin and implanted in a very similar way to administering a vaccine. The microchip information is linked to a central database that holds all the details of the pet and the owner.

Should the animal become lost or separated from its owner, a microchip scanner can be used to identify the animal and the owner.

While this event is offered for dogs only, a low-cost microchip program is currently available for cats through the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. By Nels Westman he Lower Pacific Cove parking lot construction project is slightly behind schedule due to rain (Hooray for some rain) but should be finished in early April well before the busy season begins.

People have asked about The Esplanade sidewalk replacement project. The project resulted from a push by property owners to improve the appearance of that portion of The Esplanade and to bring the sidewalk into conformance with ADA requirements.

The cost is being split 50/50 between the property owners and the City. The new sidewalks will extend from Mr. Toots to Zelda’s Deck.

The sidewalks will be wider due to ADA requirements. As a result, the diagonal parking spaces will be just a little more sharply angled in order to maintain the necessary traffic lane width. It is possible that there will be a net loss of a parking space. The old street trees will be replaced by the palms used in other parts of the Village.

The work is being done in segments to minimize impacts on the businesses and to insure customers safe access to each business. Each segment is scheduled to be completed during the week so that nothing is torn up on the weekends.

40 Years for the Senior Center W ow! — It’s Been 40 Years For The Mid County Senior Center Club House To celebrate this occasion, there will be an Open House on Saturday, March 29 from 1:00 to 3:30. If you are not familiar with the Center, this will be your chance to see what goes on in that large Senior Clubhouse at 829 Bay Avenue in Capitola (behind the Woodworm Party Store).

President Jim Bowman and Event Chairperson Wanda Siggers and committee members have planned a gala afternoon with a Pseudo Food Truck loaded with gourmet snacks, demonstrations of line dancing, waltzing, singing by the Choraliers, exhibits of all the Center’s many, many activities.

Outside, there will be a demonstration of Dog Training, and tours of the gardens where the public will learn about the two ducks that reside there.

Over 40 very desirable Raffle Prizes will be awarded by a new method. Your tickets will be placed in receptacles beside the prizes you wish to win. So, for example, some lady will not win the two fishing poles and bait (unless she wants them). And, some man will not be winning the lady’s glamorous sweater or the gourmet cooking set.

The history of this truly remarkable organization will be laid out in the Archive scrapbooks that go back to the years before the clubhouse was built in its present location.

Seven years before this clubhouse was built, Father Brice Morgan of Capitola’s Saint Joseph’s Church saw the need for a community center for seniors. In 1970, the membership faced the loss of its home because of the sale of St. Joseph’s Church.

The members realized that they had no choice but to build their own center. A flurry of fundraisers and many generous donations brought in enough money to purchase two acres of land on Bay Avenue in Capitola. In 1973, the Center received a federal grant thanks to the efforts of Bill Fernandes, and things moved very fast from that point on.

By 1974, the organization was in this new building, just two years after they learned they would have to move, Membership stood at 1.200 with 24 activities listed, and money in the bank.

The Grand Opening ceremonies for the present clubhouse were held on Sunday, February 10, 1974 with dancing on the spacious dance floor to the music of The Harry Watson Band, speeches by local dignitaries and lots of food. President Terry George stated, “We worked like dogs to get this place!” And, they certainly had.

We all owe a lot to that intrepid group of senior members.

Today, the Mid County Senior Center is still a memberowned non-profit, non-political and non-sectarian center with 470 current members whose ages range from 50 to 100. The organization is self-supporting and does not receive funding from local, state or federal governments.

Each week the Center is used by hundreds of people, including members and nonmembers who participate in activities, events, classes, meetings and gardening.

County 4-H Launches Paper Clover Fundraiser S anta Cruz County 4-H announced its Paper Clover Fundraiser supporting youth programs in the community. Donations can be accepted at local business from April 5 through April 19. A special event will take place Saturday, April 12, from 11 am to 2 pm at Scarborough Ace Hardware in King’s Village, Scotts Valley, allowing members of the community to meet 4-H participants and learn about some of the cool projects and programs they participate in. Santa Cruz County 4-H helps youth aged 5 through 19 develop skills, confidence, citizenship and leadership in a gender and age inclusive environment.

County Symphony Announces 14-15 Season A fter firmly establishing his reputation, Maestro Daniel Stewart announced an exciting second season with the Santa Cruz County Symphony. The Maestro’s unique programming and inspirational conducting style has endeared him to both musicians and concertgoers, who have been attending in numbers never before seen in the organization’s 56-year history. He’s shaking things up and making classical music is accessible to all types of people. Stewart said that the new season is, “Designed to inspire, to console, to evoke cherished memories, and to introduce new ideas and harmonies, new dialogues and discoveries, new personalities and possibilities.”

The Symphony’s 57th season rather fittingly opens with works that celebrate creation. The celebrated, globetrotting pianist, Nicolas Hodges, will perform Thomas Adès’ innovative new work, In Seven Days. Nicolas Hodges performed the world premiere of In Seven Days and was the pianist on the first recording of the piece. Also on the opening program is the overture to Leonard Bernstein’s effervescent operetta, Candide and Mozart’s great Jupiter Symphony, a complex and pivotal work.

The season’s second concert features Ying Fang - a rising star and future diva from the Metropolitan Opera hailed by the New York Times as “pure and moving.”

Ms. Fang will sing Bach’s charming Wedding Cantata and Villa-Lobos’ passionate and stirring Bachiana Brasileira No. 5 for Voice and Eight Cellos. Topping off this rich program will be Berlioz’s epic Symphonie Fantastique, a powerful work that the composer filled with all of his dreams, fears and passion about a woman he longed for.

In January, the Symphony will feature the prowess of its string section with a series of deeply emotive works. The concert opens with Samuel Barber’s heartwrenchingly beautiful Adagio for Strings, followed by Stravinsky’s celebration of Greek Mythology, Apollon Musagète and Tchaikovsky’s lush Serenade for Strings.

Next, the Symphony will continue its tradition of inviting the winner of the Klein International String Competition to perform a concerto. Violinist Youjin Lee will join the orchestra to perform Beethoven’s Violin Concerto.

At this concert, the Symphony will also present the works of two Bay-Area composers.

Lou Harrison’s Pacifika Rondo looks west across the Pacific to Asian culture and south to Latin culture as he fuses those influences

with California. The other featured composer is none other than the Santa Cruz County Symphony’s own maestro, Daniel Stewart. Stewart’s composition, Sinfonia, is sure to delight.

The Season concludes with Carl Orff’s intensely powerful choral masterpiece, Carmina Burana. Leading into this commanding work, the Symphony will perform Lully’s elegant Marche pour la cérémonie des Turcs and Victoria’s a Capella delight, O Magnum Mysterium.

For some of us, that advocacy comes in a formal role. Teachers, childcare workers, health care providers and others who come into daily contact with children can be vigilant for signs of abuse and neglect. Taking action to report suspected abuse or to offer extra time and attention to fragile children and their families can do more than make a difference. It can save lives.

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteers stand up for abused and neglected children, giving them a voice in an overburdened child welfare (foster care) system that is hardpressed to meet their individual needs.

A CASA volunteer ’s comprehensive advocacy can support them during a very difficult time and break the cycle of abuse and neglect.

Children with CASA volunteers find safe, permanent homes more quickly, are half as likely to re-enter the foster care system, and do better in school. On a national basis, CASA organizations are making a profound difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of abused and neglected children across the country.

Last year CASA of Santa Cruz County made a difference in the lives of over 200 such children in our community. But despite all the children we have helped, there are still far too many who are left to fend for themselves.

CASA of Santa Cruz County is one of more than 900 CASA programs across the country committed to ensuring that every child who needs a CASA volunteer has one.

CASA volunteers are men and women just like you — teachers, businesspeople, retirees, grandparents — who are passionate about taking an active role in helping children in our community.

They are over 21 and are willing to participate in an in-depth training program and commit to help a child or young adult until they find a permanent home (usually 18-24 months.) They are able to pass a criminal and Child Protective Services background check. They took the first step to finding out how to be a CASA

Not everyone is ready to make a commitment to be a CASA volunteer, but everyone can be an advocate. Here are some steps you can take to make our community safer for our children.

Keep the toll-free child abuse hotline number close at hand, 1 (877) 505-3299 or (831) 454-2273; if you suspect a child is being abused or neglected, you can report your suspicions confidentially.

Donate or volunteer for a social service agency that helps children who have been abused or neglected, such as Survivor’s Healing Center, Monarch Services, the Parents Center, and the United Way. Educate yourself – and others – about the devastating toll that abuse and neglect take on children and our society as a whole.

Your advocacy for children will not only help end child abuse, it will improve our community for everyone who lives here. Children who are abused and do not get the support they need to heal are more likely than other kids to drop out of school, end up homeless, turn to crime, and as adults rely on social welfare programs.

When we work together to protect vulnerable children, it saves lives while also reducing the impact on already stretched government and non-profit agencies.

Spring Training For Your Cat S

pring is in the air! Time to dust off the cat toys and get your kitty on a spring training regimen! Obesity is becoming an epidemic amongst household cats, but it is a preventable disease that you have the power to control for your feline friend. If your cat is a few pounds overweight, there are a few simple things that you can do to ensure they get to a healthy weight and stay that way for the years to come.

What Kind of Cat Food? he single most important thing you can do for your overweight kitty is start feeding him exclusively canned food in 2 to 3 daily meals. Over the years, research has shown that this is the single most effective method for weight loss and maintenance in cats. We have come to realize that dry, grain-based foods not only lead to obesity, but also contribute to other diseases, such as urinary tract disease and diabetes. Most cats who graze on dry food from a bowl that is left out all day are generally overweight and are eating much more than their recommended daily calories.

Cats will over eat if fed this way, just as a person probably would if left in a room all day with a large bag of potato chips!

The average dry cat food contains 4 times the calories ounce-for-ounce compared to canned food. Since canned food contains more moisture, cats feel full after eating much less calories than the same amount of dry food. Canned foods are also much closer to the carnivorous diet cats are naturally intended to eat. Canned foods usually are very palatable, so most cats accept the transition very well.

It is important to take time to transition your cat to this diet to avoid stomach upset. A good starting point is to feed a 1/2 can at each meal. If your schedule keeps you away from home for many hours, you can keep kitty’s meals fresh by leaving out “kitty food popsicles.” Simply mix some canned food with water and freeze in ice cube trays. Leave a couple of these ice cube sized popsicles out for your kitty’s lunchtime meal. As with all new things, most cats will take some time to adjust to this new routine. Do not be discouraged if your cat takes a few weeks to warm up to this new regimen.

Exercise … Moi? hen it comes to losing weight, physical activity is just as important as nutrition, but with cats, we must be patient and creative. Even though cats can sleep up to 20 hours a day, there is still plenty of time for exercise and play! Cats need activities for mental stimulation and enrichment.

Not only does this help with weight management, it also prevents boredom and behavioral problems.

Try to start with 2 or 3 10-minute play sessions per day. Cats are natural hunters, so find your cat’s favorite toy and get him moving by chasing around that little squeaky toy, laser light, or feather on a string. Always ensure you purchase safe cat toys and never let you cat play with strings or small objects without direct supervision.

Cats are very resourceful. They will entertain themselves by using toys and catfriendly furniture when you are away from home. Cat condos or cat trees are great for scratching and climbing. Position your cat’s tree near a window so he can climb up there and see all the squirrels and birds that pass by. This will stimulate your kitty’s natural hunting instinct.

Place your cat’s meals in different areas each day, working on making them harder to find over time. This will mimic the natural hunt that your cat would be spending most of his time doing if he were out in the wild. Once your cat becomes proficient at this new “hunting” routine, you can then hide meals under cardboard boxes or create a safe obstacle course to keep your kitty entertained for hours.

What’s Overweight’? ot sure how much weight your cat needs to lose? Talk to your veterinarian to find out your cat’s ideal weight and calorie requirements. I recommend checking your cats weight every 8 weeks to monitor progress. What if you have one overweight cat and another thin cat?

Almost 100% of the time, the overweight cat is over eating, and the ideal weight cat is eating all he needs. By switching all your cats to the new feeding regimen, most thin size cats will maintain their weight with no problems. Your veterinarian will be able to recommend the

safest approach and check to make sure your cat is fit and healthy enough to begin a weight loss regimen. Once you start to see your cat’s new shape and renewed vigor, all your efforts will be worth it!

No foolin’: Here’s some action fiction for the eclectic reader

By Sophie Hannah Picador. $25 (Rating: Interesting) here is no question that Sophie Hannah is a talented writer. That being said, though, this latest novel by the British novelist may not be for all readers.

Louise Beeston, the narrator of this tale, is becoming totally unglued and you are given a ringside seat for the creepy proceedings.

It all begins with her talented son being sent off to a boarding school so he can be part of an award winning boys choir. Shortly after this traumatic event for Louise, she engages in a neighborhood war with her neighbor over loud music.

The conflict escalates. Sophie and her husband purchase a second home out in the countryside away from their townhouse, but the music problem continues.

But now, rather than rock music, Sophie is haunted by choral singing and she eventually sees the source of the music – the orphan choir!

Frankly, this chilling story is rather unnerving and its ending is perhaps not unexpected, but it still packs a wallop.

What’s odd about this insane narrative is that as much as I was tempted to stop reading, I didn’t! It exercised a strange hold on me that, in essence, demanded I finish what I had started.

If this sounds like your cup of tea, then give “The Orphan Choir” a try, but you can’t say that you weren’t warned.

Apocalypse

By Dean Crawford Touchstone. $24.99 (Rating: Fair) he two previous books in series featuring Ethan Warner received a mixed response from readers and critics alike. This one is no different.

Imagine if you could control time and see into the future. Would you use that ability for good or evil?

In the case of the gentleman who fulfills the role of consummate villain in

this science fiction thriller, “evil” would be the response.

After a plane carrying scientists disappears in the infamous Bermuda Triangle and then the wife and daughter of an accomplished physicist are gunned down, Warner and his partner, Nicola Lopez, are assigned the investigation by the Defense Intelligence Agency.

The key is to find the missing scientist who is on the run after his family tragedy. The search will range from Cape Canaveral and the Florida Everglades to the Dominican Republic and a secret, underwater research facility.

Although there’s plenty of action, a willing suspension of disbelief is a necessary prerequisite for reading this novel.

Also, a grasp of physics will make this experience all the more enjoyable.

It is a bit of a stretch to accept some of the situations that Crawford creates, but if you aren’t too critical, this can be an entertaining read. There are more than a few real bad guys out there creating mayhem so why not a few fictional ones as well?

The Chase

By Janet Evanovich and Lee Goldberg Bantam. $28 (Rating: Very Good) hey were an instant hit when introduced last year in “The Heist” and now this investigative odd couple returns for another assignment. Nicolas Fox is a very talented con artist. FBI agent Kate O’Hare is the only person to ever catch the wily Fox. Now the two have joined forces to bring to justice some of the most accomplished denizens of the underworld.

Carter Grove, a well-connected and ruthless security wonk, has run off the rails and snatched a rare Chinese artifact from the Smithsonian. It is up to Fox and O’Hare to retrieve the priceless object before the Chinese realize it has gone missing.

Grove’s elite team of miscreants will be pitted against a rag-tag group assembled by Grove and O’Hare that include a computer geek, an actor and an over-the-hill group of mercenaries under the control of O’Hare’s father. Although this appears, on paper, to be quite a mismatch, the resulting struggle for the priceless heirloom becomes a fas-

cinating odyssey that stretches from the nation’s capital to Shanghai, the Scottish highlands and the more seamy neighborhoods of Montreal.

Lee Goldberg was involved in the “Monk” TV series and the writing that made that show so much fun is in evidence here. This is a collaboration that not only has “legs” but is definitely in for a long and successful run!

Children of the Revolution An Inspector Banks Novel

By Peter Robinson William Morrow. $25.99 (Rating: Entertaining) he Inspector Banks novels just keep coming, but this latest mystery is, in many respects, one of the most intriguing to come along in a long time. Gavin Miller is a disgraced college lecturer whose has seemingly lived in poverty for years.

When the recluse is found dead, it appears Miller wasn’t as poor as most people thought.

Investigating the death of the former staff member of Eastvale College, Detective Chief Inspector Banks realizes that to understand what has happened to Miller he’ll have to dig far back into the man’s past.

What emerges is a list of suspects as long as your arm and one very high-profile individual who nearly forces Banks to jettison the whole case.

The backstory here is a good one and that makes for a fascinating and fast paced read. If you feel the inspector’s previous outings have been a bit “ho-hum,” give this one a try. It will rekindle your interest in this long running series.

Into this dangerous situation comes Baldwin de Furnshill. A young boy who has traveled from England to defend the Holy Land, Baldwin is fleeing a dark past but the future doesn’t look much better. The youth is about to become embroiled in one of the most brutal sieges in history and there’s no guarantee he’ll ever see his homeland again.

Over 500 pages, this is a compelling novel if you haven’t yet tired of Knights of the Templar yarns. British author Michael Jecks has written numerous novels about this time period and the famous Knights of the Templar. He puts his encyclopedic knowledge to good use in all of them, but this is one of the writer’s best efforts to date. n

Aimee is a very personable girl who gets along with all beings, human and animal. She’s house-trained, crate-trained, leash-trained and very obedient. You can immediately see that Aimee is a youthful eight and still loves to go on walks, and play with toys but she also enjoys relaxing and is extremely easy to have around. This sweet girl is polite when meeting new dogs but will set her boundaries with overly rambunctious types. She shows no interest in chasing cats, birds or squirrels.

When she’s in the home, Aimee’s

is very calm, affectionate, well behaved and attentive. She comes when called and is always up for pets and rubs. She can easily get up and down stairs and jump in and out of the car. She will not jump up on furniture unless invited and when you’re eating, she will go lie down and not beg for food. However, if you offer her a treat of her own she will do a little dance on her hind legs.

All in all, this wonderful girl will be a great addition to many different household types. If Aimee sounds like all you’ve ever wanted, please come meet her. Seeing is believing!

Aptos Village WDO (Water Demand Offset)

ast month I shared that the District frequently hears from customers who wonder why new development is being permitted when our community is facing a serious water shortage. On top of that, we’re asking our customers to conserve water. Recently the conversation has centered on the Aptos Village Redevelopment Project, an 11.5-acre town square-style residential and commercial project planned for Aptos.

The District recently approved water service to the Aptos Village project. And while this will results in dozens of new units, the new development will actually reduce the overall water demand while we work towards obtaining a supplemental supply.

How is that possible? The District has a Water Demand Offset (WDO) Program for any new development. The WDO Program requires developers to offset their anticipated water use by 160-200%. So they have to save twice as much water as the new development will be using. They do it by reducing existing customers’ water use elsewhere in the District. Developers must find existing places—like schools or businesses—and pay to put in water saving devices such as ultra low-flow toilets or highefficiency washers and dishwashers.

Thus, new development actually leads to water savings. Developers cover the cost of this program on top of the standard development fees they each must pay. This program results in a “net-positive” effect has been instrumental in helping us lower our total annual consumption by 25% over the past decade in spite of additional development.

As a direct result of the Aptos Village project, hundreds of fixtures were replaced in both residential and commercial buildings throughout the District.

Since the WDO program began in 2003, developers have paid for over 3,000 water-efficient toilets in existing

homes, businesses and schools. This means that if you received a free toilet through the District’s toilet replacement program, you can thank someone who was trying to build a home or business facility. The program accounts for 160 acre-feet per year of water saved—enough to supply 10,000 households with water for one year. The District may expand the program to include other watersaving action builders can take, like replacing turf and installing water cisterns to store rainwater.

The Aptos Village project itself meets strict water conservation requirements for high-efficiency fixtures including toilets and showerheads. It will also exceed standards for low-water-use landscaping. The project includes an innovative system that directs rainwater to landscaping features, allowing the water to soak down into the ground rather than entering a storm drain and ultimately discharging to the ocean.

Aptos Village will serve as a conservation showcase for other urban projects not only in the District, but countywide.

However, as part of its ongoing efforts to secure a sufficient and sustainable water supply for our customers, the District is in fact considering enacting a building moratorium. A moratorium would prevent all construction that would lead to increased water use, or a larger “water footprint.” It would prevent both new development and remodels of existing structures that lead to more water use. It means no new homes or home remodels that, for example, add a bathroom or a bedroom. It would also affect any new municipal projects including the City of Capitola, County of Santa Cruz Parks, and the proposed Heart of Soquel Village project.

The Board will discuss this potential moratorium at an upcoming meeting. We are still working on details regarding when this meeting will take place and where it will be

held, but we will make sure to get that information out as soon as it becomes available. The Board will evaluate and discuss the very complex feasibility implications, legal issues, and the economic impacts on our community of a possible moratorium in our portion of the shared groundwater basin.

If the District does declares a moratorium it must, as a condition, also actively begin pursuing a supplemental water supply. Since the District has been actively pursuing a supplemental supply project for several years we already meet that condition as long as we continue this effort. While we were well down the path to a desalination plant project with our partners at the City of Santa Cruz, since the City took a step back to reevaluate the project, our Board has been discussing alternate supplemental supply options. These options include desalination, water transfers and using recycled water to recharge our depleted underground basins.

The District is committed to pursuing all available options for meeting our community’s water needs and will continue to evaluate all tools available at out disposal. As I said last month, we operate with an open door policy and always welcome customers’ ideas and contributions to our ongoing conversation on this critical issue.
