THEME WEDDINGS THE CREATIVE SIDE OF GETTING MARRIED
Gone are the vanilla, everyone the same, traditional weddings of the past. Theme weddings are in! What is a theme wedding? Weddings themes can come from where the ceremonies will be taking place such as a beach wedding. A theme wedding can be based on family history and tradition such as a Mexican or Croatian theme or its source can be shared values such as a “Green” theme wedding. Whatever its origin, the theme makes the wedding special for the happy couple and memorable for the wedding party and guests. Family history can be on display at the same time it is being made. Exotic locations can be emulated without the time and expense of going there. Get both families involved and make them a part of creating the theme. Whatever the theme of the wedding, it’s yours and it will help to make those wedding memories last for a lifetime.
INQUIRE ABOUT EVERYTHING Do not feel embarrassed to ask questions, as this will ensure that you are well armed with the necessary information. Read as many magazines on the subject as you can find and ask for advice form those who have had beach weddings.
HAVE BACK UP A wedding is one of the most memorable days that you have in your lifetime. These days most couples are choosing to have their weddings in exotic locations. They prefer the natural setting that a beach offers. Some of these exotic locations have breathtaking beaches and this is where the weddings take place. There are some ideas that you can incorporate in your planning that can make it a memorable experience. These ideas include:
THE INVITATION Give your guests a hint of the wedding location by putting some sand in their invitations. This is a unique way of doing things. You can also include a picture of a beach on the invitation to prepare them for what is coming.
FINDING THE BEST PLACE Select a place that will suit your wedding theme and also take into consideration the distance your guests will have to travel in order to attend it. If the place is too far, some might find it difficult to attend. Make sure that the facilities are in good order at the beach you choose.
MAKE AN EARLY START Such weddings usually need a lot of preparation and you need to do adequate research on the location. The state you are getting married in may need you to fulfill some requirements, which can take even months. Make sure you start the preparations early to avoid any disappointments. 6

These wedding are held in the open and so the weather can be unpredictable even when you closely follow the weather focus. Have an alternative place to have the wedding just incase the weather doesn’t cooperate.
CONSULT A PROFESSIONAL Make sure the person you choose has experience working with beach weddings. The best people to chose are those who are familiar Santa Cruz and Monterey county where the wedding will be held at.
GIVE YOUR GUESTS DIRECTIONS The guests that you invite to your wedding should have an easy time finding the beach. Provide them with sunscreen and some refreshments to make them feel welcome to the place.
GET THERE EARLY Make preparations to get to the location early so that you are sure everything is going according to plan. This will help you relax as you wait for the ceremony to start. Take a lot of fluids to keep you well hydrated.
HAVE AGREEMENTS IN WRITING When planning for a beach wedding you should keep in mind that you may be having it in place that is not familiar therefore any orders that you make should be signed for. This makes it easy to make claims if things are not done according to the contract. co a st alwe d di ng .c om

A wedding on the beach is the perfect way to have a simple and intimate ceremony within natural surroundings and with the right preparations you can make it a day to remember. Just chose the perfect beach and take into consideration any weather changes and you are set. Jason Hennessey is the President of www.1weddingsource. com. The site is filled with useful information and wedding favors for every bride and grooms taste.
KEEPING IT GREEN INVITATIONS Ask your stationer about green options including using tree-free, recycled and recyclable paper and vegetable oil based inks.
OUT OF TOWN GUESTS Try to get your guests to carpool, and travel at non-peak traffic times.
TRANSPORTATION Have the ceremony and the reception at the same location, eliminating the need for a large group of people to travel from one place to another. If the ceremony must be in a different spot, hire a bus to bring everyone to the reception together.
CEREMONY Consider having your celebration outdoors. The central coast has a naturally beautiful environment; from the redwoods to the sea our coast has so many unique venue choices. Enjoy the experience of selecting your wedding venue, things to consider the accessibility, surroundings and views when doing so.
FLOWERS Try to use flowers that have been organically, locally grown and take the season into account. The Central Coast is the home for a wide variety of native flowers that would make an outstanding bouquet or table arrangements.
FOOD Hire a caterer who specializes in locally grown ingredients. Santa Cruz and Monterey county produce bountiful crops with a focus on organic. Consider fresh berries, a variety of lettuces, an artichoke dish, and fresh vegetables. Also consider regional, organic wines and locally brewed beer and fresh seafood.
RECEPTION VENUE Ask your reception manager about their green policies. Many venues are up to date on reducing and recycling programs.
WEDDING PARTY FASHIONS Try to choose styles that everyone agrees they’ll want to wear again and again. Consider donating your bridal gown to a clothing charity.
KEEPSAKES FOR GUESTS Give every guest a tree seedling or a packet of wild flower seeds. You can find great eco-friendly favors for your guests on the Get Married site at https://www.getmarried.com
WEDDING WEBSITE Share your enthusiasm for having a green wedding with family and friends. You’ll be encouraging them to go green themselves. Every little bit of knowledge about how to help the environment helps everyone be more active about making a difference by going green! 8

WESTERN WEDDING Western themed weddings are the one of the hottest trends right now. Couples are selecting locations like ranch wedding venues and barn wedding venues to host their big day and with those venues comes a fun western feel. Western weddings are simp Many brides and grooms these days can create their own tradition for the ceremony. Instead of walking down the aisle to your groom, the bride and the groom can arrive together and follow the wedding party up the aisle. First the wedding party, then the flower girl and ring bearer (instead of baskets use cowboy hats!) then the bride and groom. This might mean incorporating a pick up truck (or horses!) for transportation. Being driven up to the ceremony in the back of the truck or a horse drawn buggy definitely defines the western feel. If tradition overrules, then use a pick up or buggy for the getaway! Décor ideas are endless. Use chairs and hay bales for creative seating. Cover the bales with fabric or tableclothes for more comfort. They can be arranged throughout the reception as seating areas along with the table and chairs. Keep it simple! Use daisies and mason jars for centerpieces along with gingham tableclothes. If the wedding is taking place outside hang creative lighting from the trees to create a magical atomsphere. Use horseshoes as place setters, table assignments, or incorporate into the décor by placing them on different surfaces throughout the reception.

Construct a bar using wooden pallets. In addition to cocktails, make sure to offer lemonade, ice tea, and maybe a signature drink or two! Popular wedding favor options include little potted cacti, candles, soaps shaped like cowboy hats, stars or boots, and shaped containers like tin pails, filled with candy or other confections. Hot sauce with custom labels, miniature horseshoes, and bandannas also all make great favors. Some couples give out engraved belt buckles. There are limitless options for favors when it comes to a western style wedding. Nothing says western more than a down home BBQ meal with all the fixins’! Barbecued meat, beans, corn, biscuits, what could be better? Usually if your wedding is on a ranch or in a barn the venue will have a barbecue for use. If not, there are catering companies availalble that will a barbecue to the venue, along with menu options for you to choose. There’s no end to the interesting and creative options you can explore with a western style wedding. Enjoy the opportunity to cut loose and express yourself with a unique themed wedding that reflects your personal style and allows everyone to have a lot of fun. And don’t forget; everyone in the wedding wears cowboy boots!

the wedding planning process. It’s your opportunity as a couple to make a first and lasting impression on your guests and set the tone for the wedding theme. The invitation can reflect your love for sports or a specific team. A replica of a game ticket perhaps, or how about a photo of the happy couple with their favorite sports jerseys on. When standing side by side the back of the back each jersey can say the date of the wedding! If you want to stay somewhat traditional, just include either an icon of the sport (football, baseball, hockey puck, etc.) of the logo of your favorite team. And don’t forget the team colors! Finding a cake that suits your needs might seem like a difficult task but you will find that there are several bakers that will happily make a sports themed cake to your liking. All you need to do is provide the direction they require to make your vision come to life. With fondant frosting, and a little imagination, your baker should be capable of just about anything you can think of. Baseballs, footballs, hockey pucks, golf balls, even horseshoes can all be incorporated into a cake that will wow you guests. If you want to stay with a traditional cake you can have the best of both worlds, just have the baker add something small (a logo perhaps) that is related to your team or do traditional on the outside and team colors on the inside. Your cake topper can be whimsical—use a sports themed cake topper—or use a traditional one for a more romantic look.
SPORTS THEMED
WEDDINGS
Whether it be baseball, football, hockey, soccer, or even horseshoes, if you and your future spouse are sports fans (or fanatics!) your favorite sports passion can be incorporated into your wedding day. Sports themed weddings are becoming a popular and trendy way to share your special interest with your guests. There are a couple of options when choosing a sports themed wedding. If you’re not into complete immersion of your passion, then you can just subtly include bits and pieces here and there of you and your partner’s favorite team(s). Maybe a small table off to the side with team souvenirs on it, a sports card as the favor, or sports themed props for the photo booth. The other option is that you can go crazy and include your passion in everything that has to do with the wedding and reception! Cake, centerpieces, colors, invitations, photo booth, etc. From the bridal shower to the reception there are endless ideas from which to choose your unique look. Your wedding invitation is one of the most important components of 12

Your team colors can be incorporated into everything from the cake to the centerpieces. You can use tall glass vases filled with small baseballs, basketballs, or footballs as the anchor for your tall flowers. If your favorite sport is baseball don’t forget about peanuts and Cracker Jacks! Peanuts can be incorporated easily into the centerpieces—scatter them in a circle on the table around the bottom of the centerpieces so you guests can snack. You can order duplicate sports trophies filled with flowers that are your team color. They look great and if the trophy is silver it will add a bit of elegance to the look. Your table assignments can be individualized for your sport—a bracket set up for basketball that shows the seating, table cards that are look like a baseball line up sheet, miniature hockey pucks at each place setting with the guest’s name on it. Use stadium or player names for your tables instead of numbers. Write a guest’s name on a golf ball, glue it to a tee. Then set it in a glass tea candle holder filled with sand and use it as a place holder at the guest table. So cute! Instead of a traditional rehearsal dinner why not model the night before party after your favorite team with a tailgate theme? You can still make the meal a bit gourmet as most of the sports parks these days offer more than just the standard hot dog and beer that they offered back in the day. Use the team colors for décor, for the appetizers have servers walk around with the old fashioned trays that hang around your neck instead of just placing them on a regular tray. The ideas are endless, do a little research and your rehearsal dinner will be unforgettable. For more images and ideas visit: www.coastalwedding.com co a st alwe d di ng .c om

MOBILE WEDDING ON THE GO
If you are thinking of having your wedding and/or reception somewhere remote, off the beaten path, or at a residence that doesn’t have the facilities you need, consider the popular trend of mobile services! Food trucks and mobile bars are a favorite of the wedding world with mobile quick service, and a fun way of doing your reception differently and often at a cost savings. A mobile bar or food truck is more interesting and memorable than a simple table with a white linen cloth. It changes the event into something your guests will talk about and want for themselves. The mobile services can add a fun new energy like the one you feel when you’re at a music festival. It keeps your guests feeling relaxed and comfortable, instead of a sit down formal event. Food trucks and bars are not formal, but can fit into any event and you can truly make it what you want it to be. It fits right into a black tie event or can sit pretty at a wedding. You can go anywhere you want! You’re not limited to where you can set up, the reception can be in a field if we want to. Most mobile bars have a full off-grid working system, Bluetooth stereo, event lighting, outdoor lounge, and whatever libations you choose. The mobile bar can be customized to serve anything you want and to look any way you want. Whatever your wedding 14

colors and theme are, you can have your own unique look for that special day. Spice it up and give your guests something to remember! Using a food truck at your wedding can also sometimes save money compared to standard catering services and solve planning problems for venues without major kitchen facilities. The choice of cuisine can run from a simple menu of hamburgers or tacos to more formal offerings such as steak, barbecue, or even cordon bleu. If you want more than one cuisine, hire more than one food truck! No matter what you’ve got a taste for, there’s sure to be a food truck to satisfy even the most finicky of palettes. Food trucks work really well at outdoor settings such as in a park, beach, or private residence. A favorite wedding trend is the idea of having a food truck show up late night at your venue or your after party spot to feed guests as they start to get hungry again after all that celebrating. Be adventurous! Find that perfect place for your wedding and reception having the flexibility of knowing that wherever it is, the catering truck and mobile bar will be there to serve you, your guests, and help to make those memories of a lifetime. co a st alwe d di ng .c om

THE PROPOSAL Make it Fun, Romantic & Memorable
You are ready to marry the love of your life. Now it’s time to think up a creative way to propose. There are so many ideas out there but you can make your proposal your own. You want to make sure there is a great story to tell the grandkids someday! Throughout time wedding proposals have been traditional, nontraditional, and sometimes a little kooky! People have been proposed to while skydiving, scuba diving, with sky writing, and many more creative ways. Wherever the proposal is, if it is in a setting that you both love, then it is perfect! The first thing to consider is something you both enjoy and have in common. If you both have a favorite sport that you share how about proposing during a sport event? Arrange to broadcast your proposal over the public sound system or to display it on the large screen. If you are thinking adventurous, contact the public relations department and see if they will allow you to go on the field at halftime and propose. Tell your partner you need to get something to eat, run down to the field, and announce your love to the world. Often, when you call the public relations people they have ideas you have not thought of. If you love camping and the outdoors, consider planning a camping trip. A proposal or marriage under the moon and stars along with a wood fire make for a pretty romantic moment. You can always hike to your favorite spot and pop the question. Does your partner like to fish? Put the ring on a hook and lure your lover with your proposal! Of course, nothing beats going to Venice and proposing on a Gondola or popping the question in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. If these are out of the question (no pun intended!) there are many ways to create these settings at home. Plan dinner at an Italian or French restaurant. Get the staff involved—they will place the ring on top of a fancy dessert drop it in a champagne glass, most will do whatever you ask. You pop the question and out comes a trio playing and singing romantic tunes! If you’re the partying type, Las Vegas recreates the Gondola and Eiffel Tower scenario pretty well. Or of course you can do the real thing and really make it unforgettable! The holidays are the perfect time to propose. Hang the ring box like an ornament on the tree. When the last present has been opened, say, “Wait, there’s still one more present.” Ask your intended to find it. The minute she sees that box ornament she will know what it is! Or wrap the ring box inside several bigger boxes so your sweetheart will think the present is very large. As each layer is opened, it will become will get more and more intriguing. Get down on one knee right as the last box is opened. Are you both movie buffs? Call your favorite movie theatre and they can sell you one of the slides that runs before the movie. Take you sweetheart to the movie and the question will appear during the popcorn! Tie a red velvet ribbon from one spot in your home to another. Attach little notes recalling perfect moments in your relationship along the way. You wait at the last stop, ring in hand.

FLOWER
GIRLS &
PAGE
BOYS Flower Girls and Page Boys (ring bearers) add an element of innocent childlike charm and warmth to any wedding ceremony. The gorgeous sight of your little loved one dressed in a flowing dress with ballet slippers is enough to melt even the most cynical of hearts. However, there are several things to consider when deciding whether or not to include Flower Girls and Page Boys in your wedding ceremony. Consider the age of the child you are thinking about inviting to be part of your wedding. Usually children between the ages of three and nine are good candidates. Under three can be a little tricky as children that age cannot really understand what is going on. Duties include attending the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner (optional), walking up the aisle either alone or with a Page Boy, casting flower petals on the aisle to symbolize the brides newly chosen path in life, and, once up the aisle, either going to the side to be with parents or standing with the bridesmaids during the ceremony. Appearing in the photos is an important one and for the smaller ones, might need some parental supervision. Depending on their age, children may find it difficult to stand through an entire ceremony so it’s a good idea to let them sit with their parents after their initial duties have been performed if they choose. A nine-year-old girl might be thrilled to stand up there with the “big
co ast al w eddin g.co m
girls” but a four-year-old might find it boring and start to squirm. The Page Boy has all of the same duties except his one big one: handing the ring to the groom to place on the bride’s hand. If you do not want the pageboy to carry the real rings, have him carry replicas and entrust the real rings to your best man. Also, you can sew the rings to the ring-bearing pillow with a single thread. Ensure that the children you choose for these roles are confident in performing in front of a large crowd. Pre-wedding rehearsals aid in ironing out some nerves but kids will be kids and there is always that possibility things will go wrong. To ensure (and hope!) for a smooth ceremony, make sure the child gets a good night’s sleep. If it is an evening wedding, maybe even try to get a nap in the afternoon. Do not give the children sugar before the ceremony! Although, if either child refuses to do what they are told, it’s amazing what children will do for the promise of a lollipop or other treat after, and not prior to the ceremony. At the end of the day remember, that children will be children, they can be unpredictable and sometimes difficult. However, Flower Girls and Page Boys are always a hit with your guests and for the newlyweds, they add an element of priceless fairytale charm and adorableness to your special day.

BLISS & BLENDING TOGETHER
Often, couples get caught up in the excitement of planning a wedding, but neglect to consider the intricacies of blending their lives together. Establishing rules, setting expectations, and sharing a mindset about home organization reduces the potential for conflict. The scenarios below apply to newlyweds, but could also apply to couples moving in together, blended families, and multigenerational living.
THE TALK (set expectations)
Regardless of how much you and your soon-to-be spouse feel you’re on the same page, “marriage is about combining two totally different lives — and lifestyles — into one household,” to quote my friend, Brad. Sure, you’ve spend oodles of time together as a couple, and likely have talked about your plans for kids, careers, holidays and relatives, but have you had “The Talk” about your living space, where you’ll each put your “stuff,” how you’ll use it, and if you share the same view of what tidy, clean and personal space mean to each other?
THE PURGE (edit prior to move)
Years ago when a friend and her new husband were moving into their first home together, the marriage nearly came to a screeching halt right there on the moving van platform when Jane realized Greg was nonchalantly throwing out things he thought were useless, redundant and would clutter up the house, when in fact, they were hugely sentimental to Jane. Granted, in their haste to pack up and move in together, neither had edited their belongings, and Greg, being a self-proclaimed neat-nic minimalist, thought he was helping the cause.
THE INFRASTRUCTURE (organizational placement) When Kat and Tom moved in together as very independent 30-something newlyweds, they each had “stuff” that quickly spread throughout their home, and understandably, ruffled the feathers of the other. Kat’s enormous collection of books, coupled with Tom’s sentimentality about nearly everything overtook their small apartment and caused chaos in the marriage. After much frustration and discussion, they came to a compromise: They each claimed space for their things, agreed to where piles could and could not live, and promised never to loan out or throw out the others’ things without asking. “Through the process, we recognized each partners’ items have significance, and we must respect that,” Kat admitted. 20

THE USE (share and share alike?)
One would hope that by setting an example for your partner, they’d pick up on how you use and care for your things, and that they in turn would mirror that behavior. Rather than beat around the bush, address it head on and be clear about your expectations and concerns. Identify what you’ll share, what you won’t, and agree to how you’ll care for each other’s belongings. Share and share alike works for much of what you can buy at Costco (food, batteries, bathroom and cleaning supplies, camping gear), but consider what doesn’t make sense to co-mingle (childhood memorabilia, previous personal paperwork and files), and carefully consider how you’ll blend your finances, health insurance and passwords.
THE RE-EVALUATION (reconsider location, need) As you settle into your life together, be willing to assess whether your home is harmonious or chaotic, if that matters or not, and then evaluate “what ifs” … “what if we move this here,” “donate our extra sofa,” “have a basket for our keys and technology,” “buy a coat rack,” “keep a grocery list when we run out of food?” Flexibility, patience and pragmatism go pretty far when setting the groundwork for behaviors that will carry you through a lifetime together. SAGE ADVICE (what we wish we knew before)
Second-time-around newlywed Erin sums it up well: “I love Blake dearly and appreciate all he does, but we’re on two different planets when it comes to how we care for our surroundings. We’re committed to each other, and having fallen into the pitfalls with our first marriages, we are continually discussing, evaluating and accommodating the needs of one another. sions in our lives. They are present for birthdays, funerals, graduations, weddings, etc. Everyone knows that a red rose stands for romantic love but did you know that sending yellow roses to anyone in mourning is inappropriate as a yellow rose stands for joy and friendship? References to flowers in Biblical times and durROSE Red - Love, Respect
ing the Middle Ages show they were an integral part of daily life. The popularity of formal gardens, which existed well into the Victorian era, helped to create an elaborate list of meanings to describe flowers. Known as Floriography, flowers were sent to reveal secret sentiments of love and affection, sadness, sympathy...and unhappiness or negativity!
POPPY Red - Pleasure
In its heyday, Floriography was easily expressed with nosegays (also called tussie mussies and posy). These were small bouquets commonly held by proper women to alleviate the effects of lowly odors. The term nosegay arose as a combi-

“ornament”). A nosegay was an ornament that appealed to the nose. When choosing your wedding flowers, consider the language of flowers. Choose flowers that convey the emotions you want to express to your guests and your future spouse. If you are going to have a program for your wedding, put a little paragraph in it telling what the symbolism of your chosen flowers are. We’ve all heard it— ”Say It with Flowers”!

Did you know? THROWING RICE The custom actually began with the ancient Romans, and is meant to wish fertility for the newlyweds. Originally, Romans threw wheat, but soon afterwards rice became a universal symbol for fertility. In olden times, marriage meant expansion, from building a family to increasing one’s assets. Rice (most likely chosen for its availability and low cost) symbolized both fertility and prosperity, and tossing it at couples implied best wishes and good luck. Nowadays, few people use rice but throw bird seed instead.
CARRYING THE BRIDE OVER THE THRESHOLD This began in Medieval Europe where many believed that a bride was extra vulnerable to evil spirits through the soles of her feet. To avoid bringing in any evil spirits, the groom carried the bride into their new home.
BRIDAL VEIL The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that wearing a veil would protect the bride from evil spirits who would attend the wedding to try to curse the newlyweds. What began as a protective article of clothing became a status symbol in the Victorian era when brides would start to wear more elaborate veils to signify their wealth.
SEEING EACH OTHER BEFORE THE WEDDING This superstition dates back to the time of arranged marriages, when people believed that if the couple saw each other before the ceremony, it would give them a chance to change their minds about the wedding. Today, however, many couples choose to meet up and even have portrait sessions before saying their “I dos.” 26

HONEYMOON The word “Honeymoon” dates back to the 5th century, when cultures represented calendar time with moon cycles. Back then, a newlywed couple drank mead (the “honey”) during their first moon of marriage. Mead is a honey-based wine believed to have aphrodisiac properties.. The sweet wine is said to boost virility and fertility — babies born nine months after the wedding were attributed to the mead!
SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING BORROWED, SOMETHING BLUE The something old was meant to tie the bride to her family and her past, while the something new represented her new life as part of a new family. The item borrowed was supposed to be taken from someone who was already a successfully married wife. The color blue stood for many things, including faithfulness, loyalty, and purity. All are meant to bring good luck to the newlyweds.
WEDDING CAKE The Wedding cake tradition started with the breaking of baked goods over the bride’s head. Customarily, the groom would bite off a piece of bread and then the remainder of the loaf was held above the newlywed bride’s head and then broken, showering her with crumbs and a subtle message of her husband’s male dominance. Guests would then scramble to pick up any wayward crumbs off the floor as they were said to bring good luck. This tradition evolved as cake emerged as the preferred confection for wedding celebrations. Nowadays, we cut the cake, pass it out, and enjoy. After the bride and groom have their fun with it of course!

LOOKING YOUR BEST ON YOUR BEST DAY. From the minute you start thinking about your wedding all kinds of thoughts come to mind: How should I wear my hair? How much make up should I wear? The bottom line is that you want to look amazing for your guests, the photos, and definitely, your future husband!
You’ll want to try different hairstyles, but choose the one you are most comfortable with.
Don’t stray too far from the real you.
Two very important considerations are what style neckline your dress has and what you are wearing on your head. There are many types of veils that look great with any hairstyle. Some veils can be pinned into an elegant bun at the back and some that have a built in headband that looks great with the hair down. If no veil, consider flowers in your hair. A great look is to do a loose twist at the back with flowers intertwined. Is your dress strapless? If you are wearing beautiful dangle earrings (maybe a family set) you’ll want to show them off by wearing your hair up. If it is the necklace you would like to showcase, wear your hair down with beautiful flowing curls. Used to be that wearing a braided hair-

style was only for the bohemian bride. Nowadays, soft, glamorous braided hairstyles are being embraced by classic and modern brides alike! Soft, romantic braided wedding hairstyles for long hair or incorporating hair extensions have become very popular.
What about make up? Do a trial run to get it exactly how you want it to look on your wedding day. Prior to the wedding, you may want to try a darker lipstick than normal or a smoky-eye color look that you wouldn’t normally use. The nude look is popular these days so maybe a light shadow and just a tint of lip gloss. Do a couple of runthroughs, just so you’re not disappointed on your wedding day! Watch the blush…according to one of the Coastal Wedding brides her makeup artist didn’t use a lot of blush for her wedding look, she said her cheeks would be flushed all night and then she’d be too red in person and pictures. And she was totally right! Her make up looked gorgeous all night. Go for waterproof mascara. The last thing a bride needs is huge black track marks dripping down her face from those tears of joy in her photos. Waterproof mascara can also be great for building for those thick, lush eye lashes on your big day.
Avoid bold nail polish. Your hands will be on display all day long—signing the wedding certificate, showing off your rings, shaking hands…...you’ll want them looking soft and subtle. Don’t make the mistake on your wedding day by painting your nails burgundy and you’ll cringe every time you look at your wedding pictures. Do yourself a favor and choose a pretty pale pink, a french manicure, or natural nails for your wedding day manicure.

TIPS TO KEEP “ACHOOS” FROM INTERRUPTING YOUR “I DO’S” ! You want your wedding day to be memorable for all the right reasons. While selecting the color scheme and writing your vows, don’t forget another important consideration: allergies. With these 10 tips from the experts at the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, you can limit allergy concerns on your big day.
THE SWEET SMELL OF LOVE Some guests may be sensitive to cologne or perfume, so, on a day with so many hugs, handshakes and slow dances, it’s best to go easy. The allergic response is a reaction to odors created by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and can cause headaches, sneezing, watery eyes and runny noses.
FIDO AS BEST MAN? If you’re planning to include your best pet pal in your wedding, make sure none of the bridal party is allergic. They’ll be the ones closest to your pet during the ceremony, so you want to make sure they don’t have an allergic reaction.
FORGET FLOWER WORRIES There are many beautiful flower options 30

with low allergy risk to use at your wedding. The key is to select varieties that produce little-to-no pollen. You can’t go wrong with classic roses. Other allergy-friendly flowers include begonia, columbine, crocus, daffodil and geraniums.
PLAN FOR POLLEN The warm-weather months are the most popular times to get married. If you want an outdoor wedding, be aware of when pollen counts are highest. In spring and summer, during tree and grass pollen season, levels are highest in the evening. In late summer and early fall, during ragweed pollen season, levels are highest in the morning.
THINK ABOUT MEDICATIONS If you have allergies, start your medications well before symptoms usually start. You don’t want to have a red nose, or be sneezing and wheezing during the ceremony. Also, be aware of side effects - including drowsiness - of some medications.
tant information. The most common food allergens are eggs, milk, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat and soy.
AVOID THE FLAMES Your burning love may have brought you to the altar, but burning candles can be a problem. Scents from candles (especially a lot of them) can trigger asthma, so consider using LED candles at the reception instead. Plus, they’re safer, too!
CREATE SELF-CARE BASKETS Consider creating baskets to place in bathrooms that are stocked with basics to combat allergies and other concerns. For example, you could include eye drops and tissue packs, plus some saline spray. Not very romantic, but handy!
NO BEES INVITED!
CREATE A SAFE MENU
For outdoor weddings where stinging insects might be present, add tweezers, bandages and antiseptic ointment to your basket. If the bride or groom are allergic to stinging insects, an indoor wedding might be the best bet.
To find out about any severe food allergies among guests, add a line on your RSVP card or include a section on your wedding website so guests can give you this impor-

WEDDING TRADITIONS AROUND THE
WORLD
If your dream is to get married in the land of your ancestors but it is not a reality, why not bring the traditions to your wedding anyway? Many countries have their own wedding traditions that can easily take place right here.
make the bed and then family members and friends throw money, coins, rice, and rose petals on the bed for good luck and a happy life. This ritual ends with a child (usually a boy) being rolled across the bed to guarantee fertility.
In Ireland the Claddagh ring is one of the most well-known Irish wedding traditions. Named after Claddagh, a fishing village in Galway, it is worn with the crowns facing inward, toward the wrist, on betrothal, and outward, toward the fingernail, upon marriage. Handfasting is an ancient Celtic tradition where the hands of the bride and groom are tied together with ribbon to symbolize the joining of husband and wife. It’s the origin of the phrase “tying the knot.”
The Armenian wedding celebration begins the night before the ceremony when the groom’s family brings wrapped gift boxes to the bride’s family. These contain the veil, her shoes, chocolate, Armenian cognac, perfume, and flowers. Before the bride’s veil is placed on her head, she circles the veil over the heads of the single women in her dressing room to bring them luck in finding a husband. Then a happily married woman will place the veil on the bride’s head to bring her marriage luck.
Many Italian brides carry a satin bag (la borsa) at the reception for guests to place envelopes of money in, a tradition called the “buste.” The groom also has his own tradition. Before sitting down to eat, his tie is removed, cut into pieces, and given to male guests who then offer the newlyweds a cash contribution for it. Memo to grooms: Don’t buy an expensive tie if you plan to carry out this tradition! The Japanese betrothal ceremony, call the “yuino”, is an exchange of symbolic gifts between the bride’s and groom’s families. The most popular gifts are a seaweed called “konbu” that refers to “child-bearing woman”; a long piece of hemp in white that represents the wish that both husband and wife grow old together; and a folding fan that spreads and indicates future growth and wealth. Wedding favors given to guests might include chopsticks, folding fans, and sake cups. In India garlands are presented to guests of honor instead of corsages, and flower petals are thrown for good luck. The wedding altar (mandapa) is built the day of and the groom is welcomed by his future mother in law where his feet are then washed and he is offered milk and honey. The parents give the bride away, but they do not eat before the wedding to remain pure for the occasion. The bride’s saree is tied to the groom’s scarf to symbolize the union of the souls. As the Greek bride heads for the church on her wedding day, she tucks a lump of sugar into one of her wedding gloves in the hope that she will enjoy a sweet married life. “Making the Bed” is one of the most popular and well-known traditions in Greece. The family and friends of the bride and groom gather at the couple’s new home two or three days before the wedding to help with the preparation of the bed. The bride-to-be and her unmarried friends 42
