You’reE ngaged, Now What?
The moment you’ve been waiting for... You’re getting married! You have plenty of time to plan the rest of your lives together. For now, bask in your engagement. Even though the average engagement lasts a year to a year and a half, there are some things you will want to do right away. There’s no real order in which you need to do these things. Be creative and make it your own story. But FIRST, call your family. Before sharing your ring selfie on social media, call everyone who’s going to want to hear it from you directly before making it Facebook official. Once you’ve told everyone you want to know before seeing it any where else, post that ring selfie! If you didn’t already have a manicure, get one! For the next couple of weeks everyone is going to be looking very closely at your hand and you want your nails looking their best. Pick a pop of color that compliments your new hardware. You’re going to be showing it off! It’s important to ask your fiancé if they’ve already insured the ring; you want to make sure it’s covered incase of unforeseen incidents. You will also want to get your ring sized so it fits perfectly. We know it may be tough to part with your ring so soon, but you wouldn’t want it flying off your hand from the excitement.

Remember to enjoy the moment with your fiancé and the loved ones around you. You’re going to want to start planning every little detail, but there’s plenty of time for that. Enjoy being newly engaged, savor the moment while it lasts. Wedding planning will soon take over your life. Narrow down the date before any planning. When you go to tour venues or meet with major vendors, you want to make sure your requested date is available. Also, check with people that MUST be at the wedding to ensure your selected date will work for them too. It’s also a good idea to talk about your wedding size as this may help set your budget and affect the price vendors give you. Choosing who will be in your wedding party is a BIG deal. How many bridesmaids and groomsmen will you both have? Is an even number a must? Will you have a maid of honor? Best man? These are important questions to talk over with your fiancé before you start asking your friends to be a part of your wedding. Amongst all the madness of being engaged, try to bask in the moment and enjoy this super special time in both of your lives.

Wedding Day D u t i e s Being a maid of honor for someone is a huge deal and comes with some hefty wedding day duties. As a maid of honor you are going to have plenty of responsibilities leading up to the wedding, but the wedding day may be the biggest of them all. You want the bride’s big day to go as smoothly as possible, which is where you will come in hand immensely. Pre-ceremony you’ll be getting dressed with the bridal party and bride. You’re going to play a big role in getting the bride dressed and making sure everyone else looks perfect as well. Sometimes before the bride and groom see each other on their wedding day, they want to exchange romantic notes or a memorable gift. The maid of honor will do this along with the best man. Keeping everyone on track and keeping track of everyone may seem like an impossible task, but it’s something you will need to do. If the couple has a wedding planner, request an itinerary for the day so you can familiarize yourself with it. You will also be acting as the point person; meaning anyone who asks for assistance or instructions you’re going to be able to help. Let’s not forget one of the most important tasks of the MOH, is being on drunk patrol. Most of the time the bride and her bridesmaids will want to enjoy a glass of bubbly while getting ready, but it’s your duty to keep the bride and bridesmaids to a two-glass maximum. You can never be over prepared on the day of the wedding. Bringing an emergency kit for the bride is an excellent idea. Some items to include can be ibuprofen, fashion tape, band aids, safety pins, extra hair ties, snacks, mints/gum, mini pack of tissues etc. Conveniently, all of these items can fit into a small clutch or handbag so no one will know it’s actually an emergency kit. As much as we try and prevent emergencies and mishaps from happening, they do and being prepared is the way go! The best thing you can bring for the bride on the day of the wedding is a great attitude. Be ready to handle anything that comes your way. You’re prepared to share laughs, bust a few dance moves, shed some tears and enjoy a few glasses of champagne together, and help make memories that will last a lifetime.

You Need To About Wedding Dress Alterations ou’ve found the perfect wedding dress, but the process isn’t over yet! Don’t know where to start with getting your wedding dress altered? Wondering when you should have alterations made? The way your wedding dress fits is everything, which also means your dresses alterations are everything. Which is why we’re here to tell you the important things you need to know about your wedding dress alterations and fittings. The first tip is to try and purchase your wedding dress well before your wedding because it can take up to several months for the dress to actually arrive! You want to stay on schedule
with your dress fittings, plan for a fitting two months before your wedding and then a final fitting two weeks before your wedding. When preparing for you dress fitting it’s important to bring the shoes and undergarments you’re planning on wearing the day of the wedding to ensure a proper fit. Alterations can be expensive and it’s often a wedding expense that is forgotten about. Remember to budget for your dress alterations because they can range in price from $225-$700 depending on your wants and needs. It’s much easier to take a dress in that is too large without changing the look 10

and design of the dress where as a dress can only be taken out so much. You should keep that in mind when dress shopping, sometimes we don’t look at dresses that look too large when in fact they can work, seriously don’t freak out if your dress doesn’t fit right away! Bring an extra set of eyes to your dress fittings. The proper dress fitting etiquette is to bring only one or two people, usually family members or members of your bridal party. Be picky when selecting who you want to accompany you, you want this to be a seamless (no pun intended) process, not stressful and overwhelming. For your final dress fitting bring your mom or maid of
honor so they can learn to bustle your gown, it’s an important task they will be responsible for on your wedding day. The options for alterations are endless; many tailors who are experienced with working on bridal gowns are used to reworking fabrics and can almost redesign a dress if needed. Choose a reliable, well-known tailor to make your dress alterations; you want to feel comfortable in the capabilities of whom you’re working with. How exciting, alterations and dress fittings mean your wedding day is that much closer! Being well equipped with what to expect for you and your dress will ensure a perfect fit and day. coast alwed d ing . com

Wedding Insurance What is it and
Wedding insurance protects a couple’s investment in their wedding from circumstances that are beyond their control and can result in reimbursement from expenses they’ve incurred. Say your limo doesn’t show and the morning of your wedding you have to book another limo and pay three times the price? Or what if your venue goes out of business a month before your wedding and you lose your deposit? These are a few scenarios in which wedding insurance would cover you and help protect the finances you’ve invested into your wedding. Before picking a wedding insurance plan you should check with each of your vendors to see how well they’re covered, that way you don’t pay for overlapping coverage. You can even ask your vendors for a copy of their insurance so you can find out where you aren’t fully covered. It’s good to note that most venues require all vendors to have at least general liability insurance coverage. So, how much does wedding insurance cost? Basic wedding insurance can cost between $155 and $550 and general liability insurance that covers up to $1,000,000 for accidents costs around $200. When buying wedding insurance the sooner you purchase the better… do keep in mind that some insurance companies limit how far in advance you can purchase insurance, it’s best to purchase it when you officially start your wedding planning. Wedding insurance typically covers your site, unforeseen weather, vendor no-show, sickness, injury, job or military. Insurance of

your site can cover the cost you could incur from unavoidable cancellation such as damage to the site or the site becomes inaccessible. Any weather condition that prevents the bride, groom, a relative or anyone whose presences at the wedding is essential or the majority of the guests are unable to get to the wedding due to weather and where the wedding is taking place. Insurance will cover the unfortunate event of rescheduling the wedding and all the details it entails. What if someone that is essential to the wedding is a no-show… the officiant, caterer… disaster! Well not with insurance most policies cover the cancellation or postponement of a wedding for those reasons. Wedding insurance also can cover sickness or injury to the bride, groom or anyone essential to the wedding. Military duty is also covered as unforeseen circumstances can occur within the military where one may be called to military duty, in that instance your insurance will cover postponement of the wedding due to those circumstances. You can also take on supplementary insurance for other weddingrelated items such as photography and gifts at additional costs. When it comes to wedding insurance it’s best to find a policy that suits the bride and groom in an effective manner. While we hope we never have to use our wedding insurance it is a great buffer for all of those unforeseen tragedies. Remember to thoroughly talk through the policy you’re considering with your insurance agent to really understand every detail of the policy and that it’s the one the best suits the couple.

The first dance is a much-anticipated event at your wedding, it’s a special time for the newly wed couple as they’ve pre-selected a song to dance to while everyone else watches. ESSENTIAL PLANNING TIPS To Make Your Outdoor Wedding
1 SKETCH OUT THE ITINERARY EARLY:
There’s so much to love about an outdoor wedding. Whether it’s set on the beach, at a winery or even in the backyard of a family member, pledging your eternal commitment to your partner in beautiful natural surroundings makes the day extra memorable.
Before you sign the contract with your chosen venue, discuss in detail your vision with the coordinator, and before you leave, be perfectly clear on what’s permissible and what’s off-limits. If you’re envisioning dancing the night away under the stars, you don’t want to find out three weeks before the big day that the venue has restrictions on equipment and noise. Before you sign any contract, have your itinerary ready and discuss it from start to finish.
If you’re thinking of holding the big day in the great outdoors, you’re in good company. Over the past decade, outdoor ceremonies are on the rise: 52 percent of couples tied the knot in an outdoor ceremony in 2018. Couples vision of their dream wedding can be dramatically different. Some opt for churches, hotels and banquet halls as settings for the ceremony receptions and others opting for less conventional sites, such as rooftop event spaces, historic homes, wineries and parks. Unlike the traditional venues, an outdoor ceremony and reception has its own set of considerations when it comes to planning. These practical tips will get you started in building the outdoor wedding of your dreams.

2 Plan your equipment needs:
One thing to know about holding a wedding in a less conventional spot is venues can vary wildly on what they can provide for you in terms of supplies and equipment. Take time to walk through the entire event so you’re clear on what you may need to supply yourself. Even if a venue lacks essentials like power outlets and bathroom stalls, don’t give up. There are great solutions out there to help you create the space to a beautiful venue. Your local rental store, for example, is an essential stop for anyone planning a wedding. In addition to all the wedding gear you could need, from decorations to seating, they also have lots of other equipment and ideas to help you plan the perfect outdoor event.
3 Always have a Plan B:
It’s impossible to predict what the weather will bring for an outdoor wedding, which can add uncertainty. But you can reduce the stress by planning for the worst conditions. Is hot and humid weather a possibility? How about a thunderstorm? A deposit on a rented air-conditioned tent and a set of misting fans can be a smart move. You may not end up needing these, but your peace of mind will be worth every penny.
4 Set up a kids’ station:
Many outdoor reception spaces have a built-in advantage for hosting pint-sized guests: There’s more space for them to stretch their legs and be kids without disrupting other guests. Create a kid-friendly corner featuring games, activities or even a rented inflatable bounce house that lets kids be active and let off some steam. They’ll be thrilled (and so will their parents).
5 Encourage exploration:
If the big event is held in a public place, help your guests fully appreciate the experience. Does the park have a hiking path that leads to a beautiful waterfall? Have maps printed and leave out a stack for those who decide to take a little break. Are you getting married in a beautiful garden at a historic mansion? Ask the venue if you can take extra brochures to offer the guests, or set aside time for special guided tours. This is a sure way to show consideration for your guests and make the day memorable.
hen the pieces fall into place, planning and hosting an outdoor wedding is a beautiful way to begin your lives together. (BPT)

Traits to Look for When C hoosing Y our W edding P hotographer
Planning a wedding is no small task. In order to enjoy the process (and stay sane), it’s important to recognize early on which details can be decided quickly, and which ones deserve more time and care.
When your special day rolls around, a professional photographer will have the skill and artistry in capturing those beautiful candid moments as well as the more formal portraits. Here are some traits to look for during your search that signal you’re in good hands.
When it comes to wedding photos, you can’t go wrong with a little extra time and thought, because there’s no such thing as a do-over. Choosing the right person for the job makes all the difference in getting that collection of photos you’ll treasure forever.
1
A portfolio you love. Your venue may have a list of “preferred professionals” to choose from, but don’t feel obligated to stick with their list. Feel free to explore your options, and browse local guides and websites for the ones that have strong portfolios that speak to you. As you look, pay attention to mood, style and facial expressions. Skilled and experienced photographers should have a strong and varied wedding day collection.
2
They help you think through the day. A good listener who takes a genuine interest in your plans - and makes sure you feel elated with their work - is always a good sign. Things like venue, lighting, time of day, the number of people you want to capture, number of settings and the itinerary are just a few factors they need to consider to plan and organize the shoot. If you’re not sure about something, ask their opinion. A professional will give you an honest assessment along with lots of suggestions so you enjoy your special day and capture those priceless images.
3
Something just clicks. And it’s not just the shutter. Bad puns aside, keep in mind you’re going to be spending the day with your photographer. In fact, you could very well be spending more time with the photographer than anyone else - even with your beloved. Don’t skip the in-person, face-to-face meeting when planning your special day. You want to be sure this is someone who makes you both feel open and relaxed, so trust your gut feeling.
4
They’re the complete package. A professional will complete the time-consuming (and sometimes overwhelming) task of sorting through hundreds of shots for you and put their skills to work in editing the images. What you should get is a collection of hand-picked images, all perfectly edited, cropped and toned, so they capture the best moments and emotions of the day. The one bearing the camera has a great responsibility: They are recording the first pages of history for your new family. To make sure you find the one that has the experience and the flair the day calls for, a professional photographer is always the right call. visit FindAPhotographer.com (BPT)

Honeymoon Don’t have the time or money for a lengthy honeymoon? Want to ensure your honeymoon is just the two of you and not a crowded resort or hotel? Get on Highway One (also known as the Pacific Coast Highway) and start driving! What better way to spend time together than on a road trip! The stretch of Highway One between Santa Cruz and Big Sur is one of the most beautiful in the world. As you travel the first leg of your trip, enjoy the beautiful agricultural fields. Be proud that you are in one of the richest ag areas in our country. Lettuce, artichokes, berries, and many more vegetables and fruits are grown right here on the central coast. Hungry? Stop in Castroville, The Artichoke Capital of the World, and have some french fried artichokes. Monterey, California’s first Capitol, and immortalized in John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row, is a good first stop. Spend a night (or two) and visit Fisherman’s Wharf, taste test some Clam Chowder, and then sit down for some sumptuous seafood. Get up close and personal with sea creatures of all shapes and sizes at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Stroll Cannery Row, rich with history, and visit the many wine
tasting rooms. Kayaking, whale watching, scuba diving, there are many activities to enjoy in the beautiful area. Once you’ve gotten back on the road, stop and spend some time in beautiful Carmel. Home to the renowned 17-mile Drive and Pebble Beach golf course, Carmel is an art lover’s paradise. This tiny beachside community offers galleries specializing in paintings, photography, and metal and glass sculptures. Browse the downtown boutiques, dine in quaint bistros, and take a stroll on the magnificent beaches. Visit Roy’s at Spanish Bay for a cocktail at sunset when the Scottish Bagpiper comes strolling over the golf course. Big Sur is a definite destination on this trip. Endless miles of hiking trails, beautiful beaches, and activities like horseback riding, whale watching, and wine tasting abound. Spend some quality time in Big Sur. Why rush? Take a leisurely three or four days and enjoy the beauty of it all. If you’re adventurous, instead of a hotel try some camping. Or glamping as it’s called when you’re not really roughing it! There are several places that offer treehouses, yurts, even beds built into the trees that stretch out above the beach.

Yearning for the city? Go north! Highway One curves up the California coast with some of the most beautiful views in the world. San Francisco is the prize at the end of the trip with all that it offers visitors. On the way up the coast, you can check out the kite boarders with their colorful sails dotting the sky. Stop in Davenport for some breakfast then go across the highway to take in the ocean air and maybe spot a few whales! Up ahead is Pescadero. A hidden gem, all you do is take a right, drive for a mile or so and Pescadero is hidden among the mountains. Take a stroll down their main street, check out the local artisan shops, and stop in Duatre’s Tavern, a landmark that has been there since 1894. Half Moon Bay is definitely a two day stop. Golfing, horseback riding on the beach, kayaking, there is something to do for everyone. The ultimate romantic destination, Half Moon Bay is host to tons of wildlife, including dolphins, whales, and a variety of bird species. Spectacular sunsets, misty mornings, and many delicious restaurants and patioside views are just moments away. If the time is right, you can also catch surfers from around the world paddling out at Mavericks -- one the most challenging big waves in the world, where it’s not uncommon to witness pros risking their lives to ride 50-foot waves.
stretch along the coast, Pacifica is well known regionally as a popular surfing destination. Surfers and families often visit Linda Mar Beach. Rockaway Beach is a scenic location and offers recreation, shopping, and dining. If fishing is your thing, visit Pacifica Pier and try for a striped bass or salmon. Pacifica is also a popular place to hike, with many trails that wind along the beaches and bluffs. Whether you go north or south, honeymooning on the coast means you will never run out of things to do and will always have the ocean at your feet. Enjoy!

Preparing For a
Memorable Wedding? However, are you also preparing for a memorable and long lasting marriage? by Richard Litvak, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Certified PREPARE Counselor and Trainer.
I hope you are both very happy and in love. Divorce is probably not on your mind. Unfortunately, divorce in this country shockingly occurs in 40% to 50% of first time marriages and the rate is even higher for subsequent marriages. PREPARE, a state of the art marriage preparation program, provides
valuable insights and skills that have proven to reduce divorce by 30%. The PREPARE process is proven and valuable because it focuses on the 10 essential elements of every marriage that have been discerned from 30 years of PREPARE research.
They are: • Communication • Conflict resolution • Partner styles and habits • Leisure activities • Sexual expectations
In addition, influences that each partner carries from the families they grew up in are compared regarding intimacy and family structure. The assessment can be tailored to include step-parenting issues when there are children from a previous marriage. The spirituality section can be customized for couples of the same religion, different religions, no religion, or when one of the couple is religious and the other not religious at all. PREPARE can also be customized for older couples to deal with matters of health, finances and aging. Couples often remark that simply filling out the questionnaire increases important awareness and opens valuable avenues of communication. Once the couple has completed the assessment, it is computer processed to provide the Counselor information about the couples’ answers, organized for personalized, helpful feedback. When the assessment has been processed, the PREPARE Counselor meets with the couple to review strength and growth areas. Built into the sessions are skill building exercises in communication and conflict resolution 24

that have been demonstrated to promote long and happy marriages. During four or five sessions, the Prepare Counselor leads the couple through exploration of each of the 10 essential topics, helping the couple to build a firm and satisfying foundation in these fundamental areas. During the 30 years that I have been a PREPARE Counselor and Trainer of Counselors, I have experienced the myriad ways that couples benefitted from PREPARE in getting their marriages off to their very best start. Some of the benefits have been a deeper understanding of their partner, resulting in less arguing, as well as greater confidence and clarity when talking about sensitive topics. I’ve seen couples gain insight and skills into how to better be each other’s cheerleader and lover. The PREPARE process helps couples learn how to become aware of underlying thoughts and feelings. It helps build skills in their sharing with each other in constructive, supportive ways. They develop helpful ways to avoid getting into conflicts or skillfully resolving them when they do coast alwed d ing . com
occur. Couples better understand the influences of their families of origin that often trip them up in confounding ways. The couple then is able to explore what they want to consciously carry forward into their marriage and what they select to leave behind. Best of all, PREPARE enables a couple to discern, appreciate and celebrate their strengths. The PREPARE program is a wonderful way to prepare for a happy wedding and a happy marriage. ver time many things have changed with weddings, but one thing that has stayed the same is there’s always a beautiful cake. The cakes is a big part of the wedding, and something everyone remembers. This is the first sweet you and your sweetheart will share once you’re married. With a little planning and plenty of tasting, your wedding cake will taste as good as it looks. The wedding cake is usually the centerpiece of your reception and it should fit in with your wedding ‘theme’. Incorporate your wedding colors into the cake with fresh or sugar flowers. Roses are always popular, but think outside the box, and consider showstoppers such as orchids, hydrangeas and stargazer lilies. Imagine your reception site and take your cues from your surroundings. Flowers aren’t your only options for color. All white cakes can be accented with ribbons circling each tier. Real or made of fondant, these give the cake a clean, finished look. For a bit of whimsy use a fun dot or swirl pattern to adorn the sides. As for the top tier, forget the plastic bride and groom and go for something more personal. Your grandmother’s china teacup filled with flowers would make a great topper, or perhaps a preview of the honeymoon to Paris with a mini Eiffel Tower. Stay with one or two great ideas and your cake will be a standout. Customize your cake and it will become an edible expression of your love. The flavor may be the best part about a wedding cake. Visiting bakeries and sampling their cakes will be a delicious detail to savor. Taste your favorites and dare to try something new. Fresh fruit fillings such as 26

| SUMMER-FALL 2018
strawberries and raspberries pair nicely with whipped cream and chiffon cake for a summer wedding. If you met your sweetheart in line for your daily latte, carry the coffee theme into your cake. Try a moist chocolate cake brushed with Kahlua, and a rich mocha cream cheese filling. For something tangy, go for a tart lemon curd paired with lemon butter crème and light chiffon cake. Mix and match flavors until you get the combination that you love. Once you have decided your cake flavors, the frosting is your final choice. Be sure to sample these when you are at the bakery and try them with your cake choice. If a very clean and streamlined look is what you want, fondant is a great way to get it. Fondant is a sweet icing made of sugar, corn syrup, and gelatin that is rolled out and draped over the cake. Because fondant is hard to work with, price per slice goes up. An alternative that has a similar look is butter cream. It is a soft icing that can be easily colored and flavored. Butter cream is used to create piping details such as dots and boarders. For a really dramatic look, or for a groom’s cake, consider poured chocolate ganache. With a shiny, rich, dark brown finish, it is a creative alternative to white. Price per slice can run from $3.00 to $10.00 depending on the level of decoration. Shop around, and then once you decide get it all in writing. Be sure to have all the details specified in your contract to include delivery time and fee, tier shape and sizes, specific flavors, flower types and decorations. Whatever cake you choose, your wedding cake will be a sweet addition your special day. coast alwed d ing . com
Delicious gluten free cakes and other desserts made in a gluten free facility that every guest can enjoy!
Gluten Free Wedding Don’t let food sensitivities and allergies dampen your celebration or prevent you from having the wedding reception of your dreams. Flavor is important but so is catering to people’s needs when it comes to the cake. It is very common these days for people to eat gluten free either for health or dietary reasons. With that being said, many bakers have taken note. Most carry gluten free products and gluten free bakeries have become very popular. Check out several bakeries, regular and exclusively gluten free. Ask for a tasting appointment so you can choose which gluten free option is for you. The best part about gluten free cakes is that no one will be able to tell because they’re made just as tasty as cakes that contain gluten.

Foods to Avoid
on Your Wedding Day It’s no secret that we all want to look and feel our best on our wedding day; it’s also no secret that certain foods are more beneficial than others. Obviously, your day is to be enjoyed and as your wedding goes on you’ll probably end up splurging, as you should. In no particular order here are a few foods and food groups that you should avoid on your wedding day. Carbonated drinks, such as carbonated waters and sodas contain carbon dioxide, which makes your stomach expand
leaving you feeling bloated. The best thing you can drink on your wedding day, especially before your wedding is water, if that bores you add some fruit or cucumber to it for a touch of flavor. Not only will water help reduce bloat but it’s great for your skin as well. Most people at some point become lactose-sensitive or lactose-intolerant; it’s a good idea to steer clear of cheese or any dairy the day of your wedding to avoid feeling distended, nausea, gas and fatigue. Even though a big cup of joe might be the most satisfying thing on the morning of your wedding, caffeine can often times leave you feeling jittery and anxious. Being jittery can also trigger neurotransmitters that can cause sweating, as much as we want that natural glow on our wedding day, sweat is not the glow we’re looking for. While you should enjoy Champagne and cocktails at your wedding, try and hold off until the reception as alcohol can contribute to your mental and physical well-being . Not only does alcohol have affects on your appearance but your wedding is something to be cherished, not just another night out that will be forgotten the next day. Alcohol makes the night fuzzy no matter how much or how little you drink, you want to experience and remember every little detail of your wedding; with that being said consume within reason! Cruciferous fruits and veggies are normally an important part of a well-balanced diet as they contain plenty of fiber, however; for your wedding day you may want to avoid them. These fibrous foods should be avoided on your wedding day as well as even a few days before your wedding as they can make you feel gassy. If this seems a bit restrictive for you, just remember that once the party gets rolling you should enjoy all the foods you normally would.

tiquette masters all agree, it’s the bridal couple’s choice whether or not to allow children at their wedding. Once you have decided to welcome children, here are some ways to make your life easier: First, address the invitation by putting the child’s name below the parents’ names. Follow that with a phone call to discuss what options you will have for children. Will there be children in your wedding? Giving kids a job is a good way to keep them busy and out of trouble. Ring bearers and flower girls are traditionally 3-7 years old. Depending on age, children can hand out programs or mass books, distribute flower petals, rice or bird seed, manage the guest book, hand out favors – whatever is age appropriate and suited to the child’s personality. If you are going to have a large number of children, you might want a separate room or create an area for kids under 7 that has smaller tables, highchairs, a kid-happy buffet, activities like coloring books and toys. Cover the tables in butcher paper. Hire a nanny, or have parents
volunteer to supervise that area. You can seat kids 7-14 at a separate table and consider having a children’s buffet or kid-friendly food like hot dogs, finger sandwiches, pasta salad, mashed potatoes, chicken fingers or pizza bread. It will be less expensive for you. Plan activities for the kids. Games, toys and arts and crafts supplies they can take home with them. If you have kids in a separate room, have a TV and DVD player available and play cartoons or Disney movies. A larger budget means you can hire entertainment like balloon artists, face painters or even a bounce house. Giving kids something to do will give them less time to get into trouble and make them much better guests at your wedding.
Wedding Toy Box For Your Younger Guests Crayons and coloring books (make your own coloring books!) • Sticker books and stickers • Construction paper • Kid-friendly scissors • Playdough (with heart cookie cutters) • Board games • Finger puppets • Ribbon wands • Balloons • Feather boas • Masks • Dress-up play clothes from the thrift store or your closet • Organize games such as Musical Chairs, Clothespin Drop, or Bean Bag Toss.
Keeping the kids happy will help make a happy time for all! 38

Make Your Wedding
Your Own!
Yes, it is your wedding day, but… it is also the biggest party you will ever throw. Why not include some personal touches that show your guests you and your bride or groom’s shared interests! Theme weddings are a popular way to let everyone know what you two are about as a couple. Love Harry Potter? Place a sorting hat on the reservation table and name your tables after places in the novels. Host a special bar that serves Butterbeer and Harry Potter inspired cocktails. A must have is Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans--create a table with assorted Jelly Bellies, Candy Corn, Caramel Pops, and don’t forget the Gummy Worms! Favors? Wands for everyone! Watch the Harry Potter movies (again), do some research, and your Harry Potter theme wedding will be magical. Star Wars, Star Trek, Minecraft, Disney, whatever you are into can become your wedding! Love sparklers? These days wedding couples are throwing rice and bird seed out the window and having their sendoff celebrated with sparklers. What better way to leave a party than under a canopy of sparklers held by the people most important to you, your guests! Don’t just buy any sparklers, there are sparklers made just for weddings. They are longer, safer, and don’t put out smoke like the shorter, smokier ones. If you search online you will find sparklers that will suit your day. As with any type of fireworks, always be very careful about who is lighting them and who

will dispose of them. And don’t forget to get permission from the venue for this special send-off. Add some fun to the guest tables. Place advice cards on the table--What should they name their dog? Do opposites attract or are they one and the same? Love is never having to…. When will the first child arrive? Or just place cards where your guests can write their own marriage advice to the newlyweds. Some will be serious, and some not so serious -- all will be fun and interesting for the newlyweds to read throughout the years! Here is a unique idea. If the engaged couple are a big fan of a specific singer/celebrity, why not hire a Celebrity Impersonator to attend the wedding and wow the guests? How much fun would it be to have Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, or Elvis Presley singing and mingling? If your dream wedding is taking place on a beach, consider having a clambake. If it is a small group, you can set up the tables and chairs and bar on the beach. Off to the side is the sand pit lined with rocks and the clams, lobsters, corn, potatoes, etc. are cooking away while everyone is enjoying the cocktail hour after the ceremony. Once the food is ready, it is placed on a buffet table your guests can enjoy the traditional yummy clambake food. Since you’re already on the beach, how about a firepit and S’mores instead of a cake? Your wedding day is YOUR day. Make it all about you and your love and what you both love the most!
