Brides and grooms are flocking to the Central Coast for the weather. A large majority of weddings and receptions in the area are held outdoors, an element that can also mean less expensive ceremonies. Popular options are spacious backyards in local homes, which can easily host a smaller guest list, while local country clubs, resorts and hotels are also in high demand. This area abounds with creative solutions guaranteed to make it a day to remember.

YOUR COASTAL WEDDING As winter turns into spring, couples will be joined together in marriage throughout the Central Coast. Some are locals; others are out-of-towners attracted by the region’s natural splendor and coastal charm. The Central Coast’s unique reputation for diversity, even eccentricity, is proving to be the magnet that is drawing romantics from all walks of life. While many brides want the wedding nuptials they’ve dreamed of since childhood, their dream may be radically different from conventional ceremonies of the past. No problem. This community can accommodate the most eclectic visions of wedding splendor.

The Central Coast can accommodate all budgets whether it’s a cliff wedding at a beautiful resort, or a simple wedding on the beach, there are alternatives for every budget. Whether it is a small sum of money that has been pooled together or a lavish wedding that has been planned for years, try not to labor under the misconception that the amount of money spent is directly proportionate to how much you love each other. That fallacy needs to be put to rest. Your wedding is a time to honor the union of a loving couple as you embark on a new life together. Your wedding is what you make it.

Many receptions and weddings are still held in traditional spots such as churches, country clubs and reception halls, but an adventurous percent choose to celebrate in the towering redwoods or atop a cliff with spectacular ocean views, at a beach hotel or a beautiful backyard. The growing base of wedding consultants and companies that cater to weddings demonstrates the Central Coast’s ability to compete with any big city when it comes to orchestrating a memorable event. Wedding service providers of all sorts are seeing their businesses grow. Many clients from Silicon Valley and the Bay Area are choosing to travel to this area to take advantage of the natural beauty and unique sites. The Central Coast is in demand because of its natural beauty and the experience the community offers is friendly and accommodating. 6

A Central Coast wedding can be many things. It can be a simple affair with family and friends celebrating the union amidst the natural splendor of a towering redwood forest, or a barefoot bacchanal on the sands of a pristine beach. Above all, it is a celebration of the coastal beauty that makes this region unique, and a celebration of the love that has brought you together in marriage. coast alwed d ing . com

SHADES OF SOMETHING

BLUE FROM NAILS TO TAILS

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue stands, we all know this rhyme when it comes to weddings. In time “something” blue has shaped into a meaning of purity, love and fidelity; what better way to show that off than by adding a hint of blue to your wedding day beauty by using it in a trendy fashion. This first unique way of incorporating your “something blue” into your wedding day is using blue nail polish. Here are the polish colors you could use to suit the look you’re trying to achieve on your big day. For the classic bride a soft pastel blue or a blue hue that’s barely there may be best suited and for the bold bride looking to make a statement with their “something blue” manicure can choose from an array of deep blues; there’s a shade of blue for every look. If you’re feeling inclined to wear your “something blue” on your finger nails, then here’s eight shades of blue that definitely fit the bill. PASTEL BLUE – for the minimalist bride SKY BLUE – for the classic bride DENIM BLUE – for the trendy bride COBALT – for the daring bride SAPPHIRE – for the fearless bride NAVY BLUE – for the bold bride SPARKLY BLUE – for the glam bride ARCTIC BLUE – for the millennial focused colors Add your “something blue” into your wedding day by adding a few blue blooms in your bouquet or wrap your flower stems in blue ribbon. Using flowers as your “something blue” puts a major floral twist on a long-time tradition. The bride doesn’t have to be the one displaying the “something blue”, her bridesmaids can wear blue dresses which can add a fun twist to the tradition. Each bridesmaid can implement a different shade of blue in her dress creating a cohesive contrast of blue shades. The groom can also be the one to implement the “something blue” into your wedding day, maybe it’s with a dark navy suit, a blue bow tie or a hint of blue in his boutonniere. The groomsmen can even join in on displaying the “something blue” for your wedding with blue suits or even just blue ties. Blue garter, shoes, flowers, nail polish, table settings, earrings, bridesmaids dresses? The possibilities are endless when it comes to incorporating “something blue” into your wedding day, fit the tradition into your day in a unique way that best suits you! 8

ROSE GOLD ROMANCE

From your invitations to your centerpieces, rose gold is your go-to color for your modern and chic wedding. This color is the ultimate color trend for 2018. Rose gold is a color that lies somewhere between fashion and luxury, and it is as timeless as gold can be. The color is refined, contemporary, and works very well with other colors. Rose Gold can go with almost any theme and it adds the perfect detail to any style wedding. You can use the color to add some daintiness to your décor and details; a perfect example of this is adding a row of rose gold jars with flowers to your rustic wooden table. Rose gold vases make the perfect centerpiece with blush and green foliage. You can also use the darker rose gold hues that almost resemble a copper look to dress up your outdoor setting. Then compliment your rose gold décor with blush and nude place settings and linen. Now let’s talk about adding rose gold into your wedding day wardrobe for the bride and groom or your bridal parties. For the bride rose gold can also become a part of your wedding attire, from hair pieces to belts, this color can be used a statement in your attire. As mentioned before rose gold compliments the blush and nude hues exquisitely. Perhaps blush color bridesmaids dresses is what your rose gold themed wedding needs! This color channels many options and avenues for the style conscious bride and groom. The color says elegance, fashionable and modern, it’s seen as a very classy color and will add the perfect amount of glamour to your wedding day. There are endless possibilities with rose gold and how the color can take part in your wedding. Accessorize the bride, spice up the groom, or use it to decorate your venue! You can’t go wrong with a rose gold romance.

DRESSES

NIGHT Lately the trend for wearing multiples dresses throughout your wedding has been red hot but little did we know this has been an on-going tradition for many years; no the millennials didn’t start this trend! Traditionally in American weddings brides would change dresses as their reception was commencing, they’d change into their “exit dress” in which they’d partake in their grand exit where guests would wish them well as they parted for their honeymoon. Typically these dresses would be a bridal inspired skirt or jacket suit set. However, today this has transformed a bit into a shorter more chic dress that’s 100% dance proof! The tradition has transformed over the years, now brides are indulging in three dresses, a dress for the ceremony, reception and then an exit dress. Some choose

14

wedding Coastal

| WINTER-SPRING 2018

to double the reception dress as an exit dress as well, for budget purposes. Wearing multiple dresses makes it a little easier on the dance floor as most styles for the reception dress are shorter, more fun dresses that you can easily bust a move in. Not all wedding gowns are meant for getting low on the dance floor, which is why brides are opting for a second dress that’s easier to get around in. Having multiple dresses also allows for a bride to show off a few different styles, maybe while dress shopping she found more than one dress that was “the one,” problem solved. Having multiple dresses really shouldn’t put a damper on your budget, as the second dress can be found very affordable. When having different dresses you can intertwine the style between the dresses to make the change subtler or you can go all out and make a dramatic change. The best part about having not just one but two to three dresses is you can make it your own and do what you prefer. As Audrey Hepburn said, “Life is a party, dress like it.” What better day than your wedding day to implement this outfit inspiration with multiple wedding dresses? Throw on that glittery mini dress and hit the dance floor!

FINDING

THE RIGHT RING

18

wedding Coastal

| WINTER-SPRING 2018

From the style to the shape of wedding bands, from the choices of metals to alternative options, shopping for the perfect style for you can be a little overwhelming. In years past, the tradition was for the husband and wife to have matching rings. Though that tradition has faded over the years, there are still couples who choose this to show they have become one unit. However, many couples take the non-traditional route today and choose different wedding bands. It is a show of individuality when your wedding rings are not alike. It shows your personal style and you can make a choice that best complements your skin tone and size. Don’t pass up the idea of a family heirloom. Wedding bands that have been in the family can add even more meaning to your vows. If the ring passed down to you is a design you do not like, the stones can be reset into a more modern design. If the vintage look is something that you would like, then antique stores or estate sales can be great places to look for wedding bands. One important decision is what metal you want your band(s) to be. Some people only wear one metal, others wear all, and some decide what metal their wedding ring will be as they are browsing for it. Pure gold is 24K and not usually used in jewelry as if is very soft. It’s alloyed with other metals to increase its hardness and strength. Karatage (“k”) indicates the purity, or how much gold there is in the metal in a piece of jewelry. It is expressed in 24ths, making 24k gold, 100% gold. 18k gold is composed of 75% gold,

coast alwed d ing . com

and 14k gold is composed of 58.3% gold and 41.7% of other metals. Yellow gold bands are probably the easiest and most practical to wear and repair. White gold is yellow gold that’s been alloyed with other metals like nickel or zinc to give it its white color. It’s usually plated with rhodium to give it a hard, reflective surface, but it will need to be re-plated when it shows signs of wear. Rose gold contains copper to give it its rich, warm hue. In the white metals, platinum bands are the most expensive of the commonly used metals because of platinum’s rarity, but they are also naturally hypoallergenic and a great choice for people with skin sensitivities. Platinum is also hard and heavy — the hardness makes it durable, and some people love the heft of a platinum band or engagement ring. There’s also the newer titanium and tungsten wedding bands. These metals are very durable and are steely or smoky-gray in color. The look is distinctive, but they cannot be resized. Anyone who needs their rings to take a beating may consider this metal. The long-ago traditions of wedding rings have changed into whatever suits the bride and groom. This is something that you will wear your whole married life and pass down to your heirs. Choose carefully and have fun!

GETTING THE GROOM INVOLVED IN THE PLANNING ASK FOR HIS OPINION

Sure, your groom probably isn’t going to have a strong opinion about the wedding colors, but ask for his opinion. His response might surprise you. And if he politely requests that you not ask him about every detail like this, at least you tried. If absolutely nothing else, you might have a few laughs about how ridiculous it is to spend so much time deciding about silverware in the first place.

SHARE IN THE TO DO LIST

Ask for your fiancé’s input and design the overall theme together. Get him involved by suggesting things that reflect his personality as well, like a country theme with his favorite craft beers as center pieces on the tables, or personalized brew bottles served with your own label.

INCLUDE HIM ON THE BUDGETING

If your guy is good with numbers, keep it real and let him help setting up budgets. If he can set up a spreadsheet that’s even better.

PLAN YOUR REGISTRY TOGETHER

You’ve probably had your eye on various kitchen and home items to include on your registry, and that’s great, but also be sure to ask the guy you’re marrying if he’d like to make some selections too. It’ll be fun!

SPA DAY FOR HIM TOO

You’ve probably already lined up your hair appointments, facials and massage for the lead-up to the big day, so why not let your groom get in on the self-care action?

WRITE YOUR OWN WEDDING VOWS

your love for each other on your big day. If he writes his own vows he’ll be able to reflect on you and the whole process in his own words and leave a lasting memory.

CONSIDER GETTING DANCING LESSONS TOGETHER

Nothing is than more entertaining than breaking out a groove on your first dance. Have a routine that will take your guest by surprise. He can break out in a hip hop or you can enjoy fox trot together. Ask your groom to create an awesome wedding playlist for the DJ and it’ll be a rock it out wedding.

ASK HIM TO HELP WITH THE SEATING ARRANGEMENT

Creating a wedding seating chart is no small feat, and it’ll be faster and easier if you go at it together. He can have a say as to where his friends sit and you can decide where you’d like yours to go or mix and match.

DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS

The best way to get your groom involved in the wedding planning process is to communicate. You might think that he doesn’t care about one thing, then come to find out he really does have an opinion about many different aspects of the planning process. You just never know — since it’s the first time you’re marrying the man you love. You can save a lot of headaches and blowouts if you’re both involved in the planning process for your big day. So keep it real and honest and try not to get upset if every detail isn’t your exact vision! It’s going to be amazing and memorable with both of you at the helm!

Writing your own wedding vows is an outstanding way to express 20

THANK YOU

NOTE ETIQUETTE

! u o Y k Than Sarah &

ith

m Doug S

Getting gifts is great, writing thank you notes to 100 plus guests may not be as great, but it is doable and should be done with proper etiquette. You want your guests to know their generosity is appreciated, here are some foolproof tips to mastering thank you note etiquette.

Thank you notes should be sent in a timely manner, normally for those received before the wedding a thank you note should be sent within two weeks. Gifts received after the wedding you have up to three months to send a thank you note, which is ample time if you delegate the appropriate amount of time it will take to complete the task. Designate a writing station in your house and power through those thank you notes! Having a designated location where you can house all your supplies and sit down to label, write and enclose your notes will make the process much smoother. Don’t expect to finish every single note at one time, instead set aside time daily or weekly to get them done one at a time, this will ensure you stay on track and you won’t become as overwhelmed with the amount of thank you notes you have to complete. A glass of wine and your favorite playlist will go a long way when it comes to writing thank you notes… Lets talk stationery…A neat tip is to pair your thank you note stationery with a style that compliments your wedding invitation. Lets be real, who doesn’t want to drag out their wedding festivities just a little bit longer, writing thank you notes can be fun too! Always use black or blue ink for hand written notes and choose a nice roller ball pen so it glides across the paper and aids in penmanship. When concluding the note it’s always most appropriately to sign it with you and your spouse’s first names only. Be specific when your thanking them for the gift they’ve given you, for example you can say, “Thank you for the china set from our registry, we now have a complete set.” If you have received a gift in the form of money, letting the person know how you’re planning to use the money, “We are saving for our first home. Writing a personal note allows to reflect your relationship with the person(s) who have generously given to you as you endeavor on your new journey of marriage. Avoid mentioning the amount of money given, instead use adjectives to describe the money such as “generous.” Writing thank you notes is a personal way to thank each and every person for their contribution to your new journey as a married couple. With all that being said, make writing your thank you notes fun, personal and another way to celebrate your new marriage. 22

FOOD

Ask your stationer about green options including using tree-free, recycled and recyclable paper and vegetable oil based inks.

Try to get your guests to carpool, and travel at non-peak traffic times.

Hire a caterer who specializes in locally grown ingredients. Santa Cruz and Monterey county produce bountiful crops with a focus on organic. Consider fresh berries, a variety of lettuces, an artichoke dish, and fresh vegetables. Also consider regional, organic wines and locally brewed beer and fresh seafood.

TRANSPORTATION

WEDDING WEBSITE

OUT OF TOWN GUESTS

Have the ceremony and the reception at the same location, eliminating the need for a large group of people to travel from one place to another. If the ceremony must be in a different spot, hire a bus to bring everyone to the reception together.

Share your enthusiasm for having a green wedding with family and friends. Encourage them to go green themselves. Every little bit of knowledge about how to help the environment helps everyone be more active about making a difference by going green!

CEREMONY

WEDDING PARTY FASHIONS

Consider having your celebration outdoors. The Central Coast has a naturally beautiful environment; from the redwoods to the sea our coast has so many unique venue choices. Enjoy the experience of selecting your wedding site and consider the accessibility, surroundings and views when doing so.

FLOWERS Try to use flowers that have been organically, locally grown and take the season into account. The Central Coast is the home for a wide variety of native flowers that would make an outstanding bouquet or table arrangements. coasta l w eddi n g .com

Try to choose styles that everyone agrees they’ll want to wear again and again. Consider donating your bridal gown to a clothing charity.

RECEPTION VENUE Ask your reception manager about their green policies. Many venues are up to date on reducing and recycling programs.

Getting Married? Congratulations! You just set the date for the most important day in your life. Your wedding day – Imagine it is your wedding day. Your very own wedding day! Everything you have thought and dreamt of about your wedding day is about to come true!. Here are ten essential steps that will make the preparation fun too.

1. 2. 3. 4. WEDDING 5. PLANNER TOOLS & TEN 6. ESSENTIAL TIPS 7. 8. 9. 10.

Keep within your financial limits. Create a budget for your wedding. You do not want to start your married life in debt! Get really organized, have a plan and be creative, whatever your budget, a “wedding to remember” will be yours. Now visualize. That’s right, visualize. Close your eyes and look at the tasks at hand. The list may SEEM overwhelming but it can be minimized by keeping all your plans and notes in a wedding planner, your go to for all your great ideas. Don’t try to do everything all at once. Start by gathering information. Use the www. to gather ideas. Make an extensive list of “things you LIKE,” things you WANT” and “things you MUST HAVE”. Now you are ready to make a Top 10 (or top eleven or twelve) list. Break your list it into small manageable portions that you can successfully accomplish. Use categories like... Before the wedding - During the wedding - After the wedding. 6. Now use sub categories. Include ideas for related events such as, showers, receptions, and honeymoon. 7. It is YOUR wedding. It reflects YOU. No one should dictate to you what to do and how to do it. You may seek advice, ideas and wisdom but in the end, each final decision is yours. 8. What this means is don’t be shy! Accept assistance when offered and solicit involvement, help and ideas from those you believe will be an asset. 9. Add your personal touches. For example, if you have children or pets you may consider making them an important part of your wedding. 10. Pick a few aspects of your wedding and make them personalized. A personal touch makes a wedding meaningful to the bridal couple, their attendants, family and all invited guests. In summary, your wedding is a serious moment for declaring your love and commitment to each other. Make your wedding truly a one-of-a-kind event. Fill it with cherished moments and keepsakes. Whether you choose a favorite theme, a special setting, like a coastal wedding or a redwood grove, an intimate gathering of friends and loved ones in a barn type setting, enjoy the journey. The memories and keepsakes will stay with you forever. Treasure them! And may you have a Happy, Happy day!

TIPS FOR MAKING A MEANINGFUL

WEDDING TOAST

If someone close to you is getting married, you’re probably going to want to make a toast at their wedding to demonstrate how happy you are for them. But if you’re not a polished public speaker and your tongue gets tied and palms get sweaty just thinking about it, you might be looking for some guidance. While what you say on their special day is up to you, there are some common rules as to how it’s said. Whether it’s you, someone in your bridal party, or a family member making a toast at the wedding, here are a few hints to make it less stressful and more meaningful: • You can offer a traditional wedding toast, or give an original toast. If you choose to give an original toast, prepare it ahead of time. • Practice your toast; if you’re afraid you’ll blank out when the time comes, put your thoughts on note cards. • Humor is good, but don’t make inside or off-color jokes during your toast. • The toast should be short, sweet, and personal. • Make sure everyone’s glass is full before starting your toast. 26

| WINTER-SPRING 2018

• Go through all the motions. Imagine where the audience is sitting, when rehearsing pretend to make gestures and eye contact in that direction. • Insert strategic pauses to add emphasis. Doing so will also help prevent you from rushing through the speech. • Keep your toast to around two minutes. If you find yourself talking quickly (which is likely if you’re nervous) make a conscious effort to slow down. One traditional order for toasts is as follows: • To the couple, by the father of the bride or an old friend of the family. • To the health of the parents of the couple, normally by the best man. • To the health of the bridesmaids, normally by the groom. End the toast on a positive note. Include a formal indication to inform them of the ending of the toast and what to say next. For example: “Let us now toast the happiness of Vienna and Jake. To Vienna and Jake!” As you say this, wave your glass to all, then tip it towards the person you are toasting to. Then clink your glass gently with those around you and sip your drink! LOOK GREAT, FEEL GREAT FOR

YOUR BIG DAY

From the minute you start thinking about your wedding all kinds of thoughts come to mind: How should I wear my hair? How much make up should I wear? The bottom line is that you want to look beautiful for your guests, the photos, and definitely, your future husband! Don’t stray too far from the real you. Down the road looking back at pictures of your wedding and reminiscing, you won’t be disappointed if you are looking at a beautiful vision of your younger self. Not someone who doesn’t even look like you! You’ll want to try different hairstyles, but choose the one you are most comfortable with. Two very important considerations are what style neckline your dress has and what you are wearing on your head. There are many types of veils that look great with any hairstyle. Some veils can be pinned into an elegant bun at the back and some that have a built in headband that looks great with the hair down. If no veil, consider flowers in your hair that coordinate with your bouquet. A great look is to do a loose twist at the back with flowers intertwined.

28

wedding Coastal

| WINTER-SPRING 2018

Is your dress strapless? If you are wearing beautiful dangle earrings (maybe a family set) you’ll want to show them off by wearing your hair up. If it is the necklace you want to showcase, wear your hair down with beautiful flowing curls. It used to be that wearing a braided hairstyle was only for the bohemian bride. Nowadays, soft, glamorous braided hairstyles are being embraced by classic and modern brides alike! Soft, romantic braided wedding hairstyles for long hair or incorporating hair extensions have become very popular. What about make up? Do a trial run to get it exactly how you want it to look on your wedding day. Prior to the wedding, you may want to try a darker lipstick than normal or a smoky-eye color look that you wouldn’t normally use. The nude look is popular these days so maybe a light shadow and just a tint of lip gloss. Do a couple of run-throughs, just so you’re not disappointed on your wedding day! Watch the blush…according to one of the Coastal Wedding brides her makeup artist didn’t use a lot of blush for her wedding look, she said her cheeks would be flushed all night

and then she’d be too red in person and pictures. And she was totally right! Her make up looked gorgeous all night. Go for waterproof mascara. The last thing a bride needs is huge black track marks dripping down her face from those tears of joy in her photos. Waterproof mascara can also be great for building for those thick, lush eyelashes on your big day if not you can always use eyelash extensions. Avoid bold nail polish. Your hands will be on display all day long—signing the wedding certificate, showing off your rings, shaking hands…...you’ll want them looking soft and subtle. Don’t make the mistake on your wedding day by painting your nails burgundy and you’ll cringe every time you look at your wedding pictures. Do yourself a favor and choose a pretty pale pink, a french manicure, or natural nails for your wedding day manicure. Putting a lot of thought into how you will look on your wedding day is key to a happy wedding. The bride that looks good feels good!

WEDDING RECEPTION ORDER OF EVENTS

SOCIAL HOUR By beginning with a social hour, you give your guests a chance to gather at the reception facility, drop off their gifts, meet, and mingle with the other guests while the wedding party’s portraits are being taken. The bridal couple can also snack at this time to free up time for them to mix and mingle with their guests during the lunch/dinner segment of the reception.

RECEIVING LINE The Bride and Groom then greet their guests at the entrance to the reception hall with a receiving line. This ensures that the wedding party, which includes the bridal couple, the parents, the maid of honor, the best man, and any other special guest will have the opportunity to greet each guest. After the guests are received, the wedding party is announced 38

by the emcee as they join the party. First introduced are the groomsmen and bridesmaids, then the flower girl and ring bearer, followed by the parents, and finally the happy couple.

THE WEDDING DANCE

(Optional - before or after dinner) Before dinner and right after the bride and groom have been introduced comes the first dance between the bride and groom, the father and daughter, the mother and son dance, the parents, the attendants, etc.

TOASTS BEFORE DINNER The Best Man • Maid of Honor • Father of the Groom • Father of the Bride The bride and groom can also thank their guests for coming, family members for paying, and their best friends for not telling all.

THE WEDDING DINNER During the dinner the bride and groom can mingle and greet their guests and have photos taken with them. It’s also a time that guests can make a speech, sing a song, or even perform a skit.

THE WEDDING DANCE

(Optional - before or after dinner) Traditionally the bride and groom’s first dance followed by the father daughter dance, the mother and son dance, the attendants and then the guests.

CUTTING THE CAKE The bride and groom now cut the cake. The groom gives the bride the first piece as a symbol of providing for her as the husband. Additional toasts can be made at this time.

BRIDE’S BOUQUET AND GARTER TOSS The bride throws her bouquet to the single women then the groom then removes her garter and launches it to the single men.

DEPARTURE OF THE BRIDAL COUPLE The couple is showered with one of the following: Confetti, Bubbles, Rice, or Birdseed. coasta l w eddi n g .com

DONUTS THE NEW WEDDING CAKE

Incorporating donuts into your wedding is a fun trend that is here to stay, many brides are opting out of the traditional wedding cake and adding a unique flair to their wedding with the use of donuts! For various reasons donuts are amongst one of the best new wedding trends. Who doesn’t love donuts?... plus they’re trendy and affordable. Donuts can be your dessert of choice in many different fashions, a donut bar, donuts and coffee after dinner, a cake replacement, donut towers and even a donut wall. Since donuts are becoming so popular in place of a cake, why not match them to your wedding theme? Luckily this is an easy task with a donut as you can use colored frosting, glitter and glaze to go along with your wedding vibe (subject, theme). Not only can you pair the donuts perfectly with your theme, you can also decorate a donut bar with cute sayings, “Donut ever let me go”, “all you need is love, and maybe a donut”, or “A Hole lotta love”. The possibilities are endless with a donut bar… A donut wall runs along similar lines as a donut bar but the donuts are hung onto a decorated wall, where guests can grab a donut of their choice. Donut walls make for a playful dessert bar backdrop, and can hold a very romantic theme or fit right into a barn wedding as well. There are so many DIY’s on making a donut wall, head to Pinterest and spark your creativity for your own personal donut wall that adds to your reception décor.

are an affordable option to their cake counterparts, in 2017 the average cake price was $450 and most catering company’s and reception sites charge a per-slice cake-cutting fee, that can tack on an extra couple hundred dollars as well. Where as donuts can cost as low as $150 dollars even for fancy decorated ones, the price difference is very clear! Not only is it more cost effective but it’s extremely easy to serve, with a donut wall or bar guests can help themselves…but beware it could induce a sugar coma! If you’re planning a wedding consider skipping the cake and adding a nontraditional dessert to your plans, for all the right reasons donuts are here to stay!

Besides all the fun aspects of including donuts in your wedding, let’s talk about the practical reasons. Donuts 40

Do I really need Save the Date Cards? It’s just another expense. My response to this question usually goes something like… Either you would like to do all you can to assist the people you’ve invited to your wedding in attending or you should take them off the guest list if it doesn’t matter.

Look at it this way. You have spent the last twelve or so months of your life consumed with the planning of every intricate detail of this day, don’t you want those people you invite to show? Believe it or not everyone has things going on in their lives: birthdays, vacations, anniversaries, graduations etc. The more lead time they have in knowing of your event the more leeway they have in keeping the date clear of other engagements. It is not imperative that you have engraved Save the Date announcements printed. Use some creativity and you can save some dollars while your guests “save the date.” Think about magnets that can be imprinted, postcards can easily be created or if the timing is right add a special note in with your Christmas cards. It couldn’t be simpler. But do keep in mind that you are setting the stage for your event. You might not want a hand scrawled note if you are having a formal affair at the Ritz Carlton. Save the Date cards are typically sent out four months prior to your wedding date. This will give guests a two-month “heads – up” before your invitations arrive. Include the date of your event and the location. If you have selected your location you can also coasta l w eddi n g .com

include area hotel information for you’re out of town guests allowing them to book rooms early. Wording is also simple, if you are going the formal route try this: “ Please save the date of Saturday the Twenty-Second of August for the wedding for Miss Janie Doright and Mr. Arnold Grissom. Include the names of the host and “Invitation to follow” at the bottom. For a less formal event inject some of your personality try: “Sarah and Luke are tying the knot, Save the Date so that you can join us!” Keep in mind that all you want your guests to do at this point is save the date. Don’t give away all the plans you’ve made. Also, don’t expect a response. Your responses will come on that pretty little postage paid response card you’ve had printed. If you are planning a destination wedding, send your Save the Date cards at least six months in advance. Follow the card with a detailed mailing informing guests of information, which will be crucial to their travel.
