TIME FOR AN ENGAGEMENT PARTY
What an exciting time! You’re engaged! The happy couple has decided to get married and now it is time to announce your nuptials to friends and family. Here a few ideas to get you started. Most couples choose to hold an engagement party no later than three months after the big announcement. The purpose of an engagement party is to share the excitement of your engagement with some of your future wedding guests, introduce families and to just celebrate! Traditionally, the brides parents host the engagement party but that’s not necessarily a hard and fast rule, but they should have the first right of refusal to be the hosts. Engagement parties are a time for celebration and to announce your soon to be union. What kind of party should you have? It’s your decision — an engagement party can be anything from a fancy cocktail soiree to a laid-back backyard barbecue. However, if you’re hosting a party that the Continued on Page 16. 14

food. To save money, you can have the caterer drop off the food and you can get younger family members to help serve it. Entertainment is not a must at an engagement party but it certainly is welcome. You can hire a pianist to play quietly in the background, or to save money and make it more personal, you can create your own playlist of songs that are special to the bride and groom. bride and the groom’s parents will be attending, think about what kind of event will make both families most comfortable, since the engagement party is traditionally considered an opportunity to let the couple’s families get to know each other. If your families already have a relationship, have the party somewhere where both parties are comfortable with the surroundings. When it comes to creating the guest list remember to only invite people who will be invited to the wedding. If you haven’t set up your wedding list yet, you might want to keep your party just family in order to avoid hurt feelings among friends in the future. It could cause an uncomfortable situation if a friend of yours is invited to the engagement party and not to the wedding. And don’t invite anyone other than the couple’s parents who will have to travel, since they’ll already be expected to travel for the ceremony itself. There are no rules on types of engagement parties. It can be anywhere from a home to a BBQ on the beach. When planning, think about the type of guests you will be inviting. If there are going to be grandparents or great grandparents, a beach party might not be the best idea. Try to have your party at a location that will be suitable for all invited. To start planning the party write down everything you will be buying: the invitations, the food, the drinks, the entertainment, and the decor; and come up with a realistic estimate of what you will spend. Keep in mind that some of the nicest engagement parties can be laid-back at home affairs. Another way to save on the party is to make it a “just desserts” party or serve only cocktails and appetizers. If you go this route, set the party at a time of day when the guests won’t be expecting a full dinner.
something on the invitation noting that gifts are not necessary. Some people might bring one anyway so try to have a spot set up for unexpected gifts.
Don’t stress over the last minute details! Check your list, make sure all is done. And then have some fun! Remember If you’re having an at-home party, consider making it a this is a celebration for the happy couple; everyone at the potluck and inviting each guest to bring a dish. Finding the perfect wedding dress is no easy task; the trends for wedding dresses in 2020 are some of our favorites. High slits, lace, ruffles and tiers are among a few of the elegant details that are trending this year. Don’t write off the puffy sleeves until you see yourself in the mirror looking like Princess Diana, and other brides of the maximalist era of fashion. Although style ranks pretty high in the decision making process of choosing your wedding dress, you should also consider how you feel in the dress, the dress that makes you feel the most beautiful is the one!

Flower Girls and Ring Bearers add an element of innocent childlike charm and warmth to any wedding ceremony. The gorgeous sight of your little loved one dressed in a flowing dress with ballet slippers is enough to melt every one’s heart. Dress them to coordinate with the wedding party and they’ll be sure to steal every one’s heart. Incorporating little ones into your special day is a tradition that’s happened for centuries, the flower girl symbolizes the bride losing her innocence and the ring bearer, also known as a pageboy, traditionally would carry the bride’s train, with a prayer book and the rings.

There are a few trends for grooms in 2020 that are sure to add some pizzazz to the big day. Getting married between October and March? Velvet is an increasingly popular option for tux jackets and ties. Navy has been popular for years and it isn’t going anywhere in 2020, the classics are still going strong and navy is a grounding color that’s fun to accessorize. MAID OF HONOR & BEST MAN
Someone close to you has become engaged and asked you to be in the wedding. Not to just be in the wedding but to be the Maid of Honor or the Best Man! That is a tall order. The bride or groom has asked you because you are special to them and because you can handle the responsibility. This position of honor can be loaded with a lot of work and responsibility as well as a lot of fun. It is a big job but with focus and calm, you can help to make this day a memorable one for all involved. It’s the maid/matron of honor’s and Best Man’s job to direct the wedding party through their duties. Make sure everyone gets information on shopping, fitting appointments and choosing the right jewelry. Usually the wedding party pays for their own dress or suit, including shoes.
The big day is here! Set a specific place for wedding day prep. Make sure everyone knows when to show up. Provide snacks and beverages. If one of the beverages is champagne, make sure everyone has snacks so no one is stumbling down the aisle! The bride and groom want to look their best before they stand at the wedding spot or walk down the aisle. Be focused on making sure they do. Your job is not done after the ceremony. Traditionally the Best Man and sometimes the Maid of Honor give a speech honoring the bride and groom. Your speech should be long enough to say what you want to say and no longer. Try to keep the toast between 2 and 4 minutes; most people won’t have patience for anything over 5 minutes.
Lend an ear. Whether it’s about the planning, the marriage, or the registry china patterns, you should assure the bride or groom that you are always available to listen. More often than not, a couple has to pay (or at least tip) their officiant and other vendors the day of the wedding. Ask The Maid of Honor plans the bridal shower. Get together the couple if they need you to do this and remind them to with the wedding party and the bride and pick a date that bring the payments a few days before the wedding. Don’t works for everyone. Pick a date, choose décor and food just hand over cash; put the money in an envelope. (luncheon? appetizers?), pick games, and you have a party! At some point on the wedding day, you will have to sign Planning the bachelor or bachelorette party is up to the Maid the marriage license, making the marriage official. This of Honor and Best Man. There are no rules. Some couples typically happens right after, so don’t wander off once the even combine them. Usually the month before the wedding, couple says “I do.” (And if the officiant doesn’t bring it up it can be a quiet dinner or a weekend trip. during the rehearsal, go ahead and ask.) Make sure everyone knows where and when the wedding It’s a big job being the Maid of Honor and the Best Man. CREATIVE WEDDING TRANSPORTATION IDEAS
You’re going to the chapel... but how are you getting there? What about your wedding party, or your guests? Will you be riding in a silver Rolls-Royce, a party bus, a horse and carriage, or a bicycle built for two? Whether it’s a unique way to arrive at or leave the reception, or a fun way to transport the wedding party or guests, here are some ideas for your wedding wheels.

SPORTS CARS
For thrill-seeking couples looking for an edgier ride, two-seater sports cars for special occasions are all the rage. Whether it’s a Ferrari, California, Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Roadster, Porche Boxter, Maserati or Lamborghini, these ultra-exotic specialty vehicles will get you to the reception in a flash or will have you speeding into the twilight on the way to your honeymoon. They come in daring hues like red or green or yellow, so you can use wedding colors when renting. Before jumping behind the wheel (rather than hiring a driver), check on all liability issues and take it for a spin to make sure you are familiar with all its exotic options. Also you’ll probably need to rehearse your exit ahead of time—getting out of one of these exotics gracefully requires some skill, especially for the bride in a wedding dress. WATER WAYS
If you’re celebrating by a lake or ocean, make your escape in a sleek speedboat or yacht while your guests wave you off from the shore. For a more casual affair, couples are having fun with their water-based getaways by rowing off together in kayaks, canoes or even on paddleboards! VINTAGE VEHICLES
An antique car like a vintage Rolls-Royce is a great way to travel and it will create the perfect backdrop for a classic black-and-white photo op. Some classic models to consider: Rolls-Royce Phantom, Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud or Bentley S2. Though a Rolls will always be in style, choosing antique cars with a little more character such as a vintage VW Beetle, a brightly colored VW van or even an antique pickup truck. TWO-WHEELERS
If you’re too independent to be chauffeured into the sunset, how about a motorcycle, Vespa, golf cart or tandem bike. You’ll get interesting photos and a wonderful memory to look back on. Just make sure the bride practices riding in a dress and heels! HORSE AND CARRIAGES
Experience the ultimate fairy-tale ending in a horse-drawn carriage that can fit between two and six passengers. Your maid of honor and best man can come along, or you can rent several carriages to lead the entire wedding

party in a procession. Pedicabs are a sort of metropolitan carriage for couples who love the idea of a classic horse and buggy but prefer a more modern feel. AIRLIFT
Make a wow-worthy entrance or exit in a helicopter which can carry three to six people, if you want to take your parents along for the ride. You will need enough open space to land a helicopter safely, and local air travel laws can apply. So check for restrictions with the charter company when making your choice. STRETCH LIMOS
The stretch limousine combines formality and function with a sleek design and enough room for your bridal party and parents to feel like VIPs. Most stretch limos hold 8 to 10 passengers. SUV LIMOS
For a limo experience with a little more flash, check out a stretch Hummer, Escalade or Navigator. These mega-SUVs come with fiber optics, disco lights, lasers, mirrored ceilings and pimpedout sound systems, and they can fit up to 20 people. PARTY BUSES
Don’t wait until you get to the reception to start celebrating. Invite your guests (up to 40 per party bus) along for the ride complete with a bar, lights and music. If you’re planning on popping open some drinks, check that the rental company is properly licensed. GUEST SHUTTLES
Hire a charter bus or shuttle to take all of your friends and family (up to 60!) to and from the wedding. A shuttle is the perfect opportunity to leave a favor for your guests on each seat. Channel your inner Brit and rent a doubledecker bus from a local touring company. Or, if its not too far, a yellow school bus holds 40 to 50 passengers or transport your guests in vintage trolleys. Just be mindful that trolleys and school buses are only comfortable for short distances, so make sure your trip is a brief one.
