DESIGN YOUR DREAM OUTDOOR

Kitchen

It often starts as empty space on the patio, usually somewhere just outside the back door. Then come the “things” to fill the space. There’s so much to consider that it gets difficult to make a decision. According to a 2018 survey of residential landscape architects by the American Society of Landscape Architects, one of the most popular features to fill that space is the outdoor kitchen.

ZONING IT OUT

Maximum enjoyment also comes when everything else is in its proper place, or zone. There are four zones in an outdoor kitchen – wet, cold, hot and dry. Getting these in the right combination makes prepping food, cooking and cleaning much easier.

THE FIRST TWO DECISIONS

Keep the cold zone next to the wet zone. This makes it easier to move things from the cold zone refrigerator to the wet zone sink to wash them off and get them ready for the grill in the hot zone.

Outdoor kitchens expand a homeowner’s opportunities to gather together with family and friends. However, just like indoor kitchens, outdoor kitchens must be designed thoughtfully.”

Zones are especially important when a pool is nearby. Keep the cold zone nearest to the pool. It will keep kids who want a cold drink from running past a hot grill.

The first decision is to pick a location and pay attention to the prevailing winds. Wind direction and where the kitchen is located could cause smoke to blow into guests or even into the house through an open window. Keep the grill downwind of guests.

A key to proper zoning is counter space. Grills should have a minimum of 24 inches of uninterrupted space to one side and 12 inches to the other. This gives the cook nearby room to place platters, cooking utensils and more.

The second decision has to do with grill placement. Do you want the cook to face the guests, or look at the scenery?

If there’s not room for that amount of counter space, incorporate an open-shelf cabinet below. You get additional ‘counter space’ by being able to put things on shelves.

It’s important to keep the cook in the party. It makes the outdoor kitchen less of a workplace. When the cook can talk to the guests, the space becomes more social and enjoyable.

An outdoor kitchen is a long-term investment that will enhance a home. With the right planning behind it, homeowners and their guests can enjoy it for many years.

BUILD I N G A B A C K YA R D H O M E

Backyard birding involves meeting birds’ basic survival needs for food, water, and shelter, and, getting started with birdhouses is the most overwhelming step of creating a bird sanctuary. In a few easy steps, you can offer safe, comfortable, desirable residences for many different birds that would be happy to call your yard home for their feathered families.

PLACING BIRDHOUSES IN YOUR YARD Be aware of your most common backyard bird species and note which ones regularly visit your yard. With that information, you can begin to cater your birdhouses to suit those species that are already familiar with and comfortable in your yard. Keep in mind that not all birds prefer the comfort of shelter.

BUILD APPROPRIATE BIRDHOUSES Birds don’t always care about the size or style of birdhouses they choose for nesting, but you will have better success attracting nesting birds if you opt for styles that meet their preferences for size and space. Entrance hole sizes are critical because a properly sized hole will help the intended birds can use each house. Larger, more aggressive birds will not be able to enter keeping the nesting birds safe. MOUNTING YOUR BIRDHOUSE Birdhouses should be installed in a location that gives parent birds security to raise their babies. You also want to be sure you have a decent view of your birdhouses so you can watch the growing family and enjoy them. If you plan to add more than one birdhouse to your yard, place the houses as far apart as possible to increase your chances of attracting more than one interested pair of birds at a time.

PROVIDE NESTING MATERIAL Make your birdhouses even more enticing to birds looking for a place to call home by providing appropriate nesting materials. By providing different types, from grasses, twigs, and weeds to pine needles and mud. The easier it is for birds to build a nest, the more likely they will be to investigate available nesting sites nearby, including your birdhouses. Be careful, however, not to add excessive material to birdhouses yourself, since most birds prefer to make their own nests.

KEEPING YOUR BIRDHOUSES SAFE Birds will not use a nesting site that is not safe for either their hatchlings or themselves. With regular care, it is easy to clean birdhouses and maintain them in good condition for the local climate and weather. At the same time, take steps to protect birdhouses from predators to keep vulnerable bird families safe. A well-maintained house may even be home to more than one family in the same nesting season. Even the most attractive birdhouses will not always be home to birds in each breeding season, but a patient birder who takes good care of birdhouses is more likely to become a bird landlord year after year.

Creating an outdoor living space will give you an extra “room” to enjoy in all types of weather, even as the temperatures drop. You can start small with an inexpensive patio set and charcoal grill on a new deck, go all out with a fully installed kitchen, fireplace and living room, or something in between. It depends on your budget and how you plan to use the space. Here are some ideas for must-have elements in your perfect outdoor living space that will allow you to enjoy your back yard in style with family and friends all year long. DECK

OUTDOOR KITCHEN

It’s the foundation of your outdoor space. Using real wood for your deck is the key to creating a natural, beautiful outdoor living space. One great option is Western Red Cedar or Redwood. It’s resistant to rot, decay and insects so it lasts a long time with minimum maintenance. It’s also durable, yet surprisingly lightweight, which is one of the reasons DIYers and building professionals find it so easy to work with. It’s also a green choice. Woods such as cedar and redwood leave the smallest carbon footprint compared to any other building material.

You can go big, creating a second full kitchen alfresco with a high-end gas grill, a wood-burning pizza oven, a fridge, a sink, storage for dishes and utensils, and a countertop for prep, or you can go small, with a simple grill. Either way, it’s essential to be able to cook outside so you won’t be stuck in your home’s kitchen preparing dinner while your family and friends chat on the deck.

FIRE

There’s nothing cozier on a crisp night than curling up in front of the fire. Adding a fire element to your outdoor room creates the same sort of ambiance. Imagine gazing up at the sky on a dark, starry night while sitting in front of the fire and you’ve got the idea. You’ll find a wide variety to choose from, including decorative metal fire pits or bowls; chimeneas, which are earthenware or stone outdoor fireplaces; or full-blown, permanent fireplaces like you might find inside the house. Whatever you choose, the crackling fire will draw people and create a focal point for conversation and reflection. Added bonus: It will provide a heat source for chilly nights.

14

spring-summer 2019

FURNITURE

A patio table and comfortable chairs are a must, as are some Adirondack or other sturdy, comfy chairs positioned around your fire source. But beyond that, think about how you’ll use the space. Does a chaise or two for lounging with a book and a cold beverage make sense? What about an outdoor sofa and chairs to create more of a living room-type feel? Whatever you choose, comfort, durability in all types of weather, and the size (not too big or too small) are prime considerations. SHELTER

In addition to the standard umbrella for your patio table, creating shelter for your outdoor space lets you enjoy it in all types of weather. The sky is the limit on your choices: a simple wood

and fabric canopy to shade your seating area, a more structured gazebo complete with mosquito netting, a decorative wooden pergola, or an outdoor sunroom or solarium that attaches to your home’s exterior wall. Get some ideas for great DIY projects, be it a pergola, a Tiki bar, a cover to protect your grill from the elements, or for less experienced DIYers, a dining table, benches and chairs, by downloading free DIY project plans at http://www.realcedar.com. LANDSCAPING

The final touch is the yard beyond your deck. Extend your outdoor space with a patio, create a walking path with stone pavers, or add shrubs, plants and flowers that will cycle and change with the seasons, giving your space a fresh look as the months go by.

When you place a plastic beverage container in a recycling bin, you are an important part of the product’s life cycle, helping that packaging to be used to make something new, over and over again.

An astounding 70 percent of what people toss in the trash is actually recyclable, but very few people recycle as often as they should.

bottle and the cap are made from valuable plastics that are in demand by reclaimers.

What exactly happens to plastic beverage bottles that you put in a recycling bin?

Bring recyclables home: Outside of the home it can be difficult to locate recycling bins. Make a conscious decision to bring empty beverage bottles home so they can be recycled properly.

They are collected, sorted and ground into plastic flakes. Different types of plastic flakes are separated before being washed and dried. Then the processed flakes are used to make things like cups, trays, clothing, carpet fibers and so much more - including new beverage bottles.

Plan ahead: Make space for empty beverage containers in your bag or car so it’s easy to bring them home and place them in your curbside bin.

Recycling not only reduces waste, it saves energy too. Consider plastic bottled water containers, for example. Making new bottles from old ones uses 84 percent less energy, according to the International Bottled Water Association.

Set reminders: More than 90 percent of American homes have access to curbside and drop-off recycling programs, according to IBWA. Set an alert on your phone so you remember to bring out the recycling on the designated day.

Understanding that every person plays a critical role in the recycling process, IBWA launched “Put It In The Bin” - a partnerfriendly initiative focused on educating people about the value of always putting recyclables in the bin so they can be made into new and amazing things.

Buy recycled: Purchase goods made from recycled materials to support the ongoing life cycle of products.

Recycling isn’t always convenient, but it’s worthwhile to do. When life is busy, it can be easy to forget to recycle. Consider these smart, easy-to-do tips that can help you make recycling a part of your daily life: Location: Place your recycling bin near your trash bin as a visual reminder that recycling can be just as fast and simple as putting something in the garbage. Caps included: Enjoy convenience drinks, empty them, replace the cap and recycle. It’s important to remember that both the

There are many things that can be recycled, but bottled water containers are the most common drink item in curbside recycling programs, recycled at a rate of 53.9 percent, according to the “Put It In The Bin” website. In fact, recycling just one plastic beverage bottle can conserve enough energy to power a 60-watt bulb for up to six hours, notes IBWA. What’s more, according to Recycle Across America, five recycled plastic bottles provide enough fiber to produce one square foot of carpet. With recycling, the possibilities are endless - but it all starts with one small personal choice to recycle. To learn more about how recycling makes a difference, visit putitinthebin.org. BPT

The Shower Wall kit includes adhesive, color-matched sealant and pre-measured walls that easily adhere over existing wall materials, making it a time-saving project. Its designs mimic granite, stone or timber, delivering an upscale look at an appealing price. Door, bases and storage options are part of the Passage Collection but sold separately. Available at select The Home Depot locations nationwide and online. PROJECT 2: SMART TOILETS

Replacing a toilet can easily be completed in a day or two, making it a DIY project worth considering. Not only will the bathroom feature an updated focal element, but the right toilet design can reduce the future need to clean. Install the VorMax Plus self-cleaning toilet and watch as it freshens the toilet bowl with a cleaner with every flush. The award-winning flushing platform has been independently verified to clean the bowl two times better than conventional toilets. So put away the rubber gloves and cleaning brush as they won’t be needed for a while. PROJECT 3: MODERN FLOORING

Don’t forget to look down when considering smart bathroom updates. Replacing the floor is a simple weekend project that stands out. If you have dated vinyl flooring, consider installing modern vinyl options that are far superior to the designs of yesteryear. With planks that closely mimic wood or tile, the new look will impress. Ceramic or marble tiles are popular choices for

18

spring-summer 2019

bathroom flooring as well. For a luxury touch, consider taking a weekend to add in heated flooring elements. You can find kits at your local home improvement store that install under stone floors, so with the turn of a knob you transform chilly floors into toasty tiles. PROJECT 4: STYLISH SINKS

A new sink is a smart way to update a bathroom in minimal time. Designs with simplified installation, with a bathroom sink faucets package, that make it an easy DIY task. With a modern look available in various finishes, the design is specifically created to be a time-saver to install. The Speed Connect Drain is a pre-assembled system that won’t need adjusting now or years down the road, plus the unique Speed Connect widespread installation system can be dropped in from the top for easy hose connections. No need to hire a plumber for a functional and fashionable new sink.

PROJECT 5: VISUAL ELEMENTS

To update a bathroom, consider visual real estate and all the extras that create a cohesive aesthetic. The walls typically take up the largest space in a bathroom, which means fresh paint can be a simple weekend project with big impact. Consider choosing a semi-gloss mildewresistant paint for moist bathroom spaces. Continue the refresh by painting the ceiling a crisp white, which provides a clean look that also reflects light. Finally, analyze hardware and replace dingy or outdated knobs, handles and hooks. This provides a finishing touch that ties the entire space together. With just one weekend you can transform a dated bathroom. These smart DIY projects increase value and enjoyment for all members of the household. BPT

A GUIDE TO THE EASIEST VEGETABLES TO GROW IN A CONTAINER GARDEN

hanging down and will bloom over and over with a fresh supply of vegetables.

Gardening is work, but container gardening is less work. Each year that you plant a container garden, you will find ways to cut the work even more. You can even make your container garden an organic one with just a few techniques. Almost any vegetable you can think of can be planted in containers, some better than others. However, there are plants ideally suited for containers, especially if you want an organic container garden.

Lettuce

The three things you need to provide a good crop are water, nutrients, and physical support for the plant. Good drainage also goes along with watering the plants. Remember, too much water is just as harmful and too little water.

Green Onions and Radishes

Before going over types of vegetables to plant, what type of soil do you need? Synthetic soils are best to use in the container garden. Synthetic or soil-less mixes are good because they are free from weed seed, disease and the containers will not be as heavy if you need to move them.

EASY VEGGIES Tomatoes and Peppers Plants like tomatoes and peppers will have a high yield of food and are easy to grow. Some of these plants grow over two feet tall and will need a large container so they won’t be top heavy. You can also surround them in chicken wire if you don’t want them growing out of the pot, however, tomatoes will grow 20

spring-summer 2019

You will love having your own lettuce to make fresh salads every single day. Lettuce can be grown in a small pot but the downside is that once it’s gone, no more reappears like on the tomato plant. You can have lettuce all the time by planting lots of pots and planting them a couple of weeks apart so they will be ready to eat at different times. These vegetables grow in the ground so you see only the stems and leaves. They grow fast and don’t need a very large container either.

Great Tasting Herbs Herbs take up little room and make beautiful plants for decorating the kitchen or patio. They are convenient to take what you need for cooking! Other vegetables to try are eggplant, garlic, chives, squash, beets, and spinach. But, the vegetables listed are great for getting started and making a great salad. Try planting a container or organic garden as soon as possible to see how easy it is to do and how good these fresh veggies will taste.

or many people, growing big juicy tomatoes is part of what makes vegetable gardening so enjoyable. Whether purchasing plants from your local nursery or starting tomatoes from seed, there are a few basic steps to follow to ensure that you harvest an abundant crop at the end of the growing season. There are many different varieties of tomatoes to choose from, depending on whether you will be cooking, canning, slicing, or eating miniature or grape-like varieties right off the vine. Sweet 100 ís are very abundant, and are good for salads as well as eating fresh from the garden. Roma tomatoes are good for making salsa, because the peels are not as tough as others so you don’t need to peel the skins off. Romas are also known as the classic paste and sauce tomato. There are Early Girls, Early Boys, Big Boys, Big Mamas, Sweet Baby Girls, Beefsteaks, French Rose hybrids, Big Rainbow, specialty tomatoes and many more. So start by choosing the kind of tomato you would like to grow. PLANTING TOMATOES FROM SEEDS

Tomatoes grown from seed will require six to eight weeks before they can be planted in the garden. Purchase individual containers or flats, starter soil or mixture, and the seeds of your choice. Fill each container with soil, pressing it tightly to remove air and to avoid settling problems after watering. Each variety is a little different so follow instructions carefully. Prepare a 22

spring-summer 2019

label identifying the type of tomato and the date started. You can make your own from Popsicle sticks or purchase them at the store or garden center. Insert your label in the pot and mist with water. Place containers in a sunny window and keep seeds moist by placing a plastic bag over them. Small greenhouse containers are also available at your local nursery. Watch for seeds to germinate and remove plastic when plants emerge. Wean out weaker looking seedlings to give strong ones more room to grow. Keep moist by misting or watering tomatoes as needed. When plants have a second pair of leaves it is time to transplant these seedlings to your garden or a large pot in which they are to grow. PURCHASING STARTED PLANTS

If you prefer to purchase plants from your garden center or greenhouse, select dark green plants that are stocky in size and that do not have any fruit. The fruit will stunt the plant growth and the total yield will be reduced. Tomatoes are one of the few plants that will tolerate being planted deeper than they sit in the pot. So a taller plant can be placed a little deeper if preferred. As mentioned, harden off the plant before moving it to a final location. Continued on page 24.

PREPARING GARDEN SOIL FOR TOMATO PLANTS

The soil should be deep, loamy, and well-drained for the best harvest. Tomatoes prefer a slightly acidic soil with a pH of 6.2 to 6.8. The term pH balance refers to acidity or the alkalinity of your soil from a numerical scale of 1.0 to 14.0. The neutral point on the pH scale is 7.0. Higher than 6.5 indicates alkaline soil, lower than that indicates acidic soil. Test kits are available at garden centers or through local horticultural organizations. To raise the soil’s pH, work agriculture lime into the soil. Use sulfur to lower the pH of alkaline soil. Using fertilizers and compost amendments will also change the soil’s pH over time. Adding decomposed organic compost will improve any soil structure. You can purchase or make your own compost. Once you have cultivated your garden area and prepared the soil, it is ready for the plantings. PLANTING THE TOMATOES

Inspect all of the transplants, looking for insects, wilting or blight. Plant only healthy plants. Tomatoes prefer full sun, so choose an area with at least six to eight hours of sun per day. Practice crop rotation in your vegetable gardening by planting tomatoes and other vegetables in a different spot every year. Tomatoes prefer to be planted by chives, parsley, marigolds, nasturtiums, garlic bulbs, and carrots. Avoid planting tomatoes by potatoes or members of the cabbage family. For large healthy tomatoes, give them plenty of room to grow. Space plants twenty-four inches between rows and leave twentyfour inches between plants. With your shovel or spade, make holes slightly larger than the plants. Tap gently on the bottom of the individual container, loosening the soil and gently removing from the pot. Tomatoes are susceptible to cutworms, but placing a 3-4 inch nail next to each stem before planting or wrapping strips of newspaper around the bottom of the stems will help prevent these pests. A paper cup surrounding the stem also works well. Place tomato plant in hole and back fill with soil until it is well compacted. Place a rack or cage around each individual plant to help support future growth. Do not over water or soak the seedlings as this can promote disease and rot. Water early in the day to discourage blight. Using a rake, spread organic mulch, such as weed-straw, over plants at least two inches deep. These is an effective way to prevent weeds, preserve water and keep the soil warm, thus reducing the maintenance required for vegetable gardening. Fertilize the plants throughout the growing season with compost or organic matter. Water when needed and inspect leaves periodically for the signs of tomato blight and insects. If blight is discovered, remove any infected leaves and destroy them. Treat plant with a fungicide. Be sure to remove all debris from your garden in the 24

spring-summer 2019

fall, as blight can survive on the dried tomatoes over the winter. Most tomatoes take 100-days to bear fruit, so follow these easy directions and get ready to harvest the fruits of your labors and enjoy that first BLT of the season. ITEMS NEEDED FOR GROWING TOMATOES:

• Tomato seeds or plants • Containers or flats • A small greenhouse kit or plastic bags • Starter soil or mixture • Marking pen • Popsicle sticks or labels • Rake • Spade and shovel • Water, sun, adequate soil and patience

CALLING ALL FOODIES TRENDS SHAPING HOME COOKING IN 2019

Today’s chefs and home cooks alike are seeking more meaningful food experiences, with smart, intuitive technology that’s high-performing and saves time. This year, leading brands are changing the way culinary enthusiasts source and prepare their food, emphasizing a heightened level of respect for all ingredients throughout the process. The result? Delicious food and healthier lifestyles. Here are four trends driving the evolution of home cooking in 2019:

own produce, others turn to sources like farmer’s markets and community-supported agriculture for the freshest ingredients in an effort to consume less processed food. Luxury kitchen appliance brands are starting to recognize this and educate consumers on how to stay “true to food.” For instance, Signature Kitchen Suite is producing short films that highlight food experts around the country who can help guide others to get the best out of everything we cook.

Farm fresh, locally sourced food. More than ever, home cooks strive to use fresh, locally grown or raised organic products, both in the interests of sustainability and to achieve the best tasting, most nutritious dishes. While some at-home chefs grow their

Food journalist, author, educator and True to Food film host Mark Bittman says, “Cooking with consciousness is a lifestyle philosophy I live by. It gets people thinking about the food they’re consuming, where it’s sourced and how it’s prepared.

that is now making its way to the home kitchen,” said AJ Schaller, executive chef at Cuisine Solutions and the Culinary Research and Education Academy. “Sous-vide allows food to cook at a precise temperature to enhance flavors and maintain moisture, consistency and nutrients that are typically lost through conventional cooking methods,” she explains. “It requires more planning for the home chef, because you increase the time you cook when using lower temperatures, but it makes life easier since it’s such a simple process that when done well can increase conservation.”

That’s why I believe so strongly in the True to Food mission.” Creativity, efficiency and sustainability are keys to today’s kitchen, according to Bittman, who recently led a panel discussion of culinary and wine experts to amplify the True to Food conversation at the new Signature Kitchen Suite “Experience and Design Center” in the heart of culinary-centric Napa Valley, California. Waste reduction. Along with a growing interest in food sourcing comes the need to properly store and preserve it, not only to maintain freshness, but also to reduce waste. Important tips like decluttering your refrigerator and freezer, and making sure food is stored in the correct place are good first steps, but what about the quality of your appliances? Many new built-in appliances like integrated column refrigerators and freezers are purposefully designed, from their spacious capacity to their ability to preserve fresh food through optimum temperature control, thanks to innovative features like a linear compressor and engineered all-metal interior. Smart technology and modalities. Many of today’s home cooks represent a new generation of forward-thinking individuals called “Technicureans,” or those who have a passion for food and appreciation for innovation. Imagine preheating your oven remotely or having the opportunity to use a go-to cooking method used in the world’s best restaurants. Take, for instance, the versatile new 48-inch Dual-Fuel Pro Range, which is the first on the market with built-in “sous vide,” directly on the cooktop, along with induction and gas, delivering the ultimate in precision cooking. “Sous-vide is a revolutionary professional cooking technique

Food and wine pairings. Interest in wine culture is always evolving, and many at-home chefs have an affinity for curating their collections. Investing in proper storage is also important, especially for wines that are best served chilled. New integrated wine column refrigerators are bringing unique “wine cave” technology to wine connoisseurs. This technology from significantly reduces vibration - a primary impediment to wine preservation that can cause chemical imbalances affecting the quality, flavors, aromas and texture. It also minimizes temperature fluctuations, limits light exposure and locks in humidity so aspiring sommeliers will have their sparkling wines, whites and rosés at the ready.

Ingredients :

2 boxes of Duncan Hines Tres Leches cake mix 6 large eggs 1 cup water 2 Envy apples, small diced 4 T butter 1 T ground cinnamon 4 cans sweetened condensed milk 2 can evaporated milk

For whipped cream/ topping:

1 cup powdered sugar 3 cup heavy cream 2 tsp vanilla 1 ½ tsp cinnamon 20 California Giant strawberries, stems removed, thinly sliced and fanned out

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees Heat a large saute pan over medium heat and melt 4 T butter. Add cinnamon, stir, and then add diced apples and saute for 2 ½ minutes. Let cool slightly. Use just the cake mix packet from the box, pour each packet into a large mixing bowl. Into the first bowl, whisk together with 3 eggs and ½ cup water for 1 ½ minutes until smooth (or can use an electric mixer on medium speed). Repeat with second bowl. Spray 2 9x13 pans with nonstick spray and then lightly flour one, and line the other with parchment paper so that all sides are covered by one piece (the nonstick spray will help the parchment stick to the sides of the pan and make easier to handle) Pour the two batters into a separate prepared pan and then divide and sprinkle cinnamon apples over top of batter. Bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick placed in the center of the cakes comes out clean. Let cool completely. Meanwhile, whisk together sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk until well combined.

Beat together heavy cream, powdered sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon on medium speed until soft peaks form. Cake #1 (without parchment paper): Using a skewer or tip of knife, poke small holes all over the cake and then slowly pour ½ of the milk mixture over top. Spread a thin layer of whipped cream over top and then shingle out sliced strawberries over top. Cake #2: Carefully remove the one cake by grabbing the sides of the parchment paper and pulling it out of pan. Using both hands, gently place the second cake on top of the other. Using a skewer or tip of knife, poke small holes all over the cake and then slowly pour the other ½ of the milk mixture over top. Let cake cool in refrigerator for 2 hours and soak up the liquid. After 2 hours, spoon any excess liquid back over top of the cake and then spread a thick layer of whipped cream on top. Have fun with your berries and make fun designs with fanned out strawberries over top of the whipped cream and then allow the cake to chill for another 2 hours. It’s even better if you let sit overnight! *Simple version: Bake 2 boxes together in one deep 9x13 pan and then soak with full amount of milk mixture. Top with whipped cream and strawberries. spring-summer 2019

Add a bathroom to an ‘impossible’

space to catch home buyers’ attention

When it comes to real estate, you’ve probably heard kitchens and bathrooms typically sell houses. While you may not have enough money for a kitchen remodel, adding a bathroom can be a more affordable way to enhance your property and catch buyers’ attention. By adding another bathroom to your home, you immediately increase your chances of the property getting noticed. Technology makes it simple for buyers to search properties of interest by their designated criteria. One of those is “minimum number of bathrooms.” By adding to that amount in your listing, you’ll be getting in front of that many more potential buyers. ADDING BATHROOMS TO DIFFICULT SPACES

Bathrooms increase a home’s value and add to its functionality - both elements that buyers desire. Homeowners can begin to research opportunities to add bathrooms to their properties presale. This often means enhancing basements, garage slabs and other spaces that can be more difficult for contractors to add plumbing systems with conventional in-floor drainage. If you have a space that would be ideal for a bathroom but appears to be impossible due to the need to break through concrete or other types of flooring, there’s another solution to consider: above-floor, macerating plumbing systems. Developed a half century ago in Europe, these systems are still relatively unknown in the United States; however, they offer a vast opportunity for homeowners. Macerating systems from makers like Saniflo reduce waste and paper from the toilet and send it under high pressure through piping directly into the septic or sewer system. No waste is stored, and the systems are low-cost compared to traditional plumbing. Systems are discreet, quiet and open the possibilities of affordable additions in less time. Learn more at Saniflo.com. If you want to add a bathroom to prepare your home for resale, don’t be limited by the seemingly impossible. Here are four “impossible” home improvement scenarios where above-floor plumbing may be the solution: Continued on page 32

MAIN FLOOR ON-SLAB CONSTRUCTION

Owners of slab-built homes may hesitate to cut into the concrete foundation in order to accommodate conventional plumbing. No matter how careful a contractor is when cutting into concrete, a variety of problems can arise - from unexpected obstructions to poor-fitting patches and even stress cracks. Above-floor plumbing systems eliminate the need to cut into the slab, so integrity isn’t compromised. HISTORIC HOMES

Opening walls or floors to accommodate piping may jeopardize important historic elements, such as original wood flooring or plaster walls. Systems like Saniflo’s macerating toilet and plumbing technology eliminate the need to cut through a floor to install new drainage, while minimizing the impact on walls as well. The system also fits easily into small areas like a closet or the dead space behind a stairway, meaning homeowners don’t have to compromise the flow of their historic homes to add a bathroom.

32

spring-summer 2019

RAISED HOMES

Bayou and beach towns often boast charming raised homes. Adding a bathroom to the lowest floor of a raised home can be problematic; conventional plumbing pipes may detract from the aesthetic value of the space beneath the home, which is often used for car ports, porches and decks. Above-floor plumbing eliminates the need for unsightly pipes, so you can make a great first impression to potential buyers. WAREHOUSE REHABS

In cities across the country, warehouses have found new life as condos and apartments. The problem is heavy brick construction can make adding traditional plumbing difficult. Above-floor plumbing eliminates the need to cut into or remove bricks, and allows renovators to install attractive, cozy bathrooms in smaller spaces. Imagine how upgrading a one-bath condo to a property with two bathrooms will enhance resale. If you’re preparing your home for the current real estate market, you want it to stand out. An extra bathroom can help you do that and attract high bids from buyers. Thanks to above-floor macerating plumbing systems, the possibilities are endless. BPT

ASPARAGUS

INGREDIENTS:

INGREDIENTS:

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 bunch asparagus, trimmed

• Fresh, organic carrots to fill

• 1 tablespoon sea salt • Cool un-chlorinated water

• 1 tablespoon sea salt • Cool un-chlorinated water

to fit a pint and a half jar

SNAP PEAS

CARROTS

• 1lb sugar snap peas • 1 small handful fresh dill • 3-5 cloves of garlic (optional) • 1 tablespoon sea salt • Cool un-chlorinated water

your fermenting vessel

1. Clean and trim the veggies, fill your jar. Wash veggies (remove strings from pea pods) and trim to fit a pint and a half jar, reserving the ends for broth, or other uses. Leave 3/4” at the top of the jar for a weight and brine to cover.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS:

• Use the freshest organic produce you can

possibly get your hands on— straight from the plant if possible.

• Use the highest quality sea salt, not

commercial table salt with additives. Here, we use Celtic Sea Salt.

• Keep all vegetables under the brine at all

times. Here, we used glass Pickle Pebbles to keep the peas below the brine.

• Limit oxygen exposure by using a

homemade or store bought airlock system, such as the Pickle Pipe.

2. Pack the veggies into a jar. Pack the Veggie of your choice into a large mason jar. Here, we used a Ball Pint-and-aHalf. Be sure to leave space at the top of the jar for a weight or press, to keep the veggies submerged beneath the brine; cut veggies to fit, if necessary. Continued on page 36.

• Take notes, keep a fermentation journal or label ferments with date, salt percentage and recipe.

• Ferment vegetables around 64º-72ºF, not in the sun.

3. Make and pour the brine Dissolve 1 heaping tablespoon of sea salt in a pint of cool, unchlorinated water. Pour the brine over the Veggies. (Use this basic formula to scale up for any size batch you are making.) 4. Secure a jar top fermenter on top of the jar and ferment. You can use Pickle Pipe fermenters. Other fermenters work well too like Ferment’n, Vegetable Fermentation Kit or Kraut Source. Allow the veggies to ferment out of direct sunlight for three to five days. 5. Store and enjoy! Screw on a lid and store in the fridge when they have reached the desired flavor. They will keep there for up to 1 month if they last!

INNOVATIVE, AFFORDABLE AND FUN

TINY HOMES

Photos courtesy of California Tiny House, Inc.

Tiny houses have become popular in recent years as housing prices continue to soar. Whether as an off-the-grid retreat or a way to live more simply and economically, tiny homes offer a more flexible way to live. As the popularity and need for tiny homes become ever more prevalent, knowing the necessary skills to design a tiny house for yourself is a useful skill to have. If you not into designing your own there are kits that can be purchased, along with the support you might need while doing your own building. Before you start any tiny house project, check your local government for documents you may need. i.e., permits. The typical American home is about 2,800 square feet, while the typical tiny house seldom exceeds 500 square feet. A tiny house on wheels is usually less than 8 x 30 ft, with livable space totaling 150 so ft or less, for ease of towing. If you are thinking of going tiny, making the commitment can be a freeing experience. All those material items you thought you could not live without? Once you start the process of downsizing you start to appreciate that those things just are not important to you anymore. Keep what you love, donate the rest.

42

spring-summer 2019

A tiny house uses every available inch of space. Most components serve more than one purpose. For instance, a door might be used to close off the bathroom, but the outside of the door has another door that opens to reveal a pantry. Usually the staircase serves not only as a staircase but also has a storage area under each stair. The side of the staircase also opens up to create closet space! All open wall space is usually a cabinet. Every nook and cranny in a tiny house are utilitarian in some way. You’d be awed by some of the creative things that can be done with teeny tiny spaces. Tiny home living has many benefits. As many as 66% of tiny home dwellers have no credit card debt. In addition to that, 69% don’t have a mortgage payment. And with an average of $23,000, self-built tiny homes are much more inexpensive to build than traditional homes. It is definitely a lifestyle change for the better to some when the results can be less spending, less accumulation of stuff, and less debt. Plus, if you get restless you can always hook it up and move to another spot! With a little creativity and a lot of downsizing of personal “stuff ”, tiny homes are an affordable and creative way to live. And don’t forget, the smaller the house, the less to clean!

As your dog ages, your care must evolve to meet your furry friend’s changing needs, particularly when it comes to mobility, injury-prevention and recovery. THE FOLLOWING TIPS CAN HELP KEEP YOUR AGING DOG MOBILE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY. F ISH OIL

Originally recommended for treating canine allergies, fish oil is now used to treat numerous conditions, including arthritis and high cholesterol. Consult your veterinarian about the proper dose for your pup. PAW OR TOE GRIPS

As your aging dog’s hips get weaker, the risk of knee, hip or spinal injury increases. Hip dysplasia is particularly common among larger dogs. Using paw or toe grips, such as Dr. Buzby’s ToeGrips, can provide dogs with greater traction, helping them get up off the ground and to slide less on wood floors. You may also want to try placing down rugs or yoga mats where your dog tends to spend time, to reduce the chance of sliding and injury. PAIN MANAGEMENT

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most prescribed medications for treating conditions such as arthritis in dogs. Don’t attempt to treat your dog with your own over-thecounter pain medications. Get dog-specific medications, such as Dazequin Advance. L IFTING ASSISTANCE

Aging and injured dogs can have trouble lifting themselves off the floor, up stairs and into cars, and you may not always be 46

spring-summer 2019

able to safely assist them yourself. For some help, use a special harness, such as the Help ‘Em Up Harness. A nine-point chest and hip harness made of comfortable waterproof material, it can help aging pets or pets recovering from surgery stay active, gain confidence in their mobility, reduce the risk of re-injury and have a better quality of life. More information can be found at www.helpemup.com. R EHAB

Just as you would follow a course of rehabilitation exercises and physical therapy after a hip or knee surgery or injury, so should your dog. Seek out a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist to help improve the function and mobility of your dog’s muscles and joints. Muscle strengthening can help your dog stay injury free, as well as manage pain. Providing dogs with a great quality of life involves new considerations as they age. Be sure to take special precautions with dogs facing mobility issues and pain, as well as preventive steps to reduce the risk of injury. For additional products to help your pets with the aging process see the friendly staff at Corralitos Feed and Pet Supply. They now have two locations to serve you in Watsonville and Corralitos. StatePoint
