THINK LOCAL FIRST FOR YOUR HOLIDAYS!

Find t he Best Gif ts at Local, Independent ly Owned Businesses Happy Holidays! Every year, we wonder what to buy for our friends and family — and where to buy it. One thing to consider is creating a special connection with your loved ones by gifting something you can’t get online or in generic chain stores. When you shop the locally owned businesses that are members of Think Local First County of Santa Cruz, you support the businesses that are the core of our local economy. In turn, a healthy economy supports you, your family, friends, and community. The owners and employees of our local businesses are your neighbors and they are devoted to our local economy thriving — they are the glue that holds us together through thick and thin. They fund and work with local service organizations helping those in need as well as supporting the arts and athletic activities of our youth. So, when you give gifts purchased from locally owned businesses, you are really giving the gift of community. When you spend at locally owned businesses, much of that

money stays within our community. Why is that important? Because one of many things we treasure about living here is that Santa Cruz County is colorful, diverse, and unique. We consider that the norm. For numerous other small communities, the norm has become box stores that replaced family-owned businesses, boarded up storefronts and giant parking lots surrounding a mega-store. Make your shopping season and gifts truly special by making your purchases at shops that carry the Think Local First logo. Visit these shops’ websites and Facebook pages to learn about their latest sales and buy your gifts. As you do your holiday shopping — December is Shop Local Month in Santa Cruz County — help ensure our county will retain its special quality of community involvement and support for those who live, work, and go to school here. Think Local First (TLF) formed in 2007 around its mission to promote and sustain economic vitality while preserving the unique character of Santa Cruz County.

Santa Cruz Ballet

Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre’s annual “The Nutcracker” features live orchestra at the Civic Auditorium This December, Maestro Pamela Martin will stand in the Civic Auditorium and raise her baton in front of 52 professional musicians. The combined skill of the conductor and the Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre Orchestra will bring Tchaikovsky’s beloved The Nutcracker score to life, in classic holiday celebration. Santa Cruz audiences are lucky to have such a high-quality local Nutcracker, one of very few pre-professional versions with live orchestra in the country. SCBT’s The Nutcracker boasts talented pre-professional dancers, outstanding lighting and stage design, world-class guest stars, vibrant costumes, and graceful choreography which brings the time-honored tale to life. Together, these attributes support the collaboration of live musicians.

Pamela Martin serves as Music Director of Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre and has conducted its orchestra since 2012. Since s h e was a child, she loved music and dance equally, always amazed at how the dancing made the music visible. Maestro Martin appreciates Robert Kelley’s choreography for The Nutcracker, stating that it is the most musically pure production she has conducted. Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre’s The Nutcracker features guest stars in every performance. SCBT alumna Melody Mennite, a principal dancer with Houston Ballet, will perform the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy, partnered by fellow Houston Ballet principal Chun Wai Chan. Maestro Martin says Melody is one of the most musical Sugar Plum Fairies she has ever worked with, stating, “For a conductor, the more musical a dancer is, the more natural the whole process is.”

Maestro Martin sites the Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre production as a standout. “We are presenting The Nutcracker as it was originally intended: the excitement of a live musical performance combined with the excitement of the dancing. The dancers and the orchestra are literally responding to each other, making a very different kind of experience for the audience. For anyone who has not had the opportunity to see The Nutcracker with live orchestra, it’s a whole new world!” Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre presents The Nutcracker at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium December 21, 22 and 23. Tickets are available online at SantaCruzTickets.com or through scbt.org or at the Civic Box Office (831) 420-5260. Tickets are $16-65. Sweet Treats meet and greet event before the matinee performances.

PETS LIKE THE HOLIDAYS TOO! It’s an exciting time of year. Everyone is busy getting ready to celebrate. Sometimes in all the hustle and bustle your pets get forgotten about, except for feeding times. Their walks become more infrequent or not at all and they don’t get as many hugs as they want. Pets like holidays too! Here are some ideas on including your pets in your holiday festivities. Get your pet his or her own stocking and hang it on the mantel with the rest of the family. Fill it with presents, maybe a new collar and/or leash and of course, plenty of treats! At gift giving time, put it on the floor and let your pet dig in. They will love their new presents! A really cute gift for family members that includes your pets is to take a picture of your pet and order notepads or keychains to put in stockings. Most pet or feed stores carry

a kit for paw prints but if you cannot find one you can also make a simple salt and flour dough, press your pet’s paw into it and let dry. Paint it, date it, and you have a cute keepsake to remember your pet forever. If you personalize your Christmas cards this year with a photograph, make sure Fido or Snowball is included. They are part of the family! Have you ever tried making from-scratch treats for your furry companion? There are plenty of recipes out there, from the basic to the fancy. Make it extra fun by picking up a cookie cutter the shape of a biscuit for your pup and one the shape of a fish for your cat. But even if you simply roll them into little nibbles, they’ll be happy to try them fresh out of the oven! Consider donating to a local charity or shelter in your area as a gift from your pet – or, better yet, offer to volunteer. There are many, many animals in need of care who appreciate the good care they get at a shelter that depends on donations. Going caroling? Take your dog with you. He or she will love being in a crowd and getting all those pets and hugs! One bit of advice—when walking up to houses hold back a bit until you know for sure the resident welcomes animals. The best thing about the holidays is spending time with loved ones. As you celebrate the season, don’t forget to sneak in some quiet time with your furry family member. Because, really, that’s what the holidays are all about.

20 - 2018 Holiday Gift Guide

Lastly, don’t forget a few safety tips: If you have a cat, secure your Christmas tree. There is always that one cat who is going to try to climb up the tree, only to have it come crashing down. If you have a dog, remember to keep all the holiday baked goods and snacks in the kitchen stashed away. Spending time with your pets during the holidays should not include an emergency trip to the vet!

WITH YOUR DONATION econd Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County is entering it’s most intense two months of the year, in which it encourages and empowers the community to organize the dozens of local food and fund drives throughout the county which together are the Holiday Food & Fund Drive. County business, civic, and community leaders and activists will come together to raise food and funds for this campaign. The drive is Second Harvest’s biggest of the year, and 100% of the food and funds it raises supports food donations to its network of 200 pantries, soup kitchens, recovery centers, assisted living homes, and food and nutrition programs throughout the county. This year the goal for the drive is 4.8 million meals, an ambitious target that the drive’s co-chairs—Martina O’Sullivan, engaged citizen and John Laird, California Secretary for Natural Resources—intend to meet. Though the economy is on an upswing, expensive housing continues to strain people’s budgets. So high numbers of local individuals and families still rely on help from The Food Bank. The holidays are a great time for those of us who are a little more fortunate to come together and help those around us who are most in need. O’Sullivan said, “As Co-Chairs of the Second Harvest Food Bank Holiday Food & Fund Drive, John Laird and I are thrilled to be a part of this necessary community effort which will ensure 4,800,000 meals will be provided for children, families, and individuals who struggle to keep themselves fed with healthy food in our very own community. Thanks to each and every one of you who participates, rest assured you will be changing the lives of thousands of our Santa Cruz residents.” 24 - 2018 Holiday Gift Guide

Kids start looking forward to their school holiday break a lot earlier than their parents. Most school districts offer a two-week holiday during December but there are a few that offer an even longer holiday. That is a long time to have nothing to do but think about what Santa is going to bring or what’s going to be in those Hanukkah gifts! Keeping kids busy during holiday break can definitely be a challenge, especially when you are running around trying to catch up on shopping. There are plenty of fun things to do during this time with the kids and their friends. START A TRADITION Baking Holiday cookies is always a fun activity for parents and kids alike. A really fun activity for your kids and their friends is to host a Cookie Exchange. Send out invitations to your kids’ friends’ and their parents and have each bring 2-3 dozen homemade cookies of their holiday choice, i.e., Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and an empty container to take cookies home. Once the day arrives have your guests put their cookies on the table. After the kids and parents have played a few holiday games each guest and their child or children walk around the table and choose 2-3 cookies from the various trays. How many cookies get chosen is decided by the size of the party. Such fun! You get to go home with a wide variety of cookies and treats for your holiday snacking.

MAKE GINGERBREAD HOUSES. Let your kids invite some friends over and they can go to town creating and decorating gingerbread houses. Graham crackers make great walls and a roof. Use icing as the glue to hold it all together. Once your structure is set up you can use the icing as decoration (red and green food coloring comes in handy!). Put out bowls of different candies, i.e., jelly drops, licorice, Skittles, M and M’s, etc., and let the kids go crazy! Each child will have their own unique house that they can admire and eat later! TAKE A DRIVE AND VISIT THE NEIGHBORHOOD HOLIDAY LIGHTS. Some people love to decorate so much that they layer their house and yard with thousands of Christmas lights, statues,

and moving snowmen, Santa, reindeer, etc. As you drive past each building strewn with holiday lights the ohhs and ahhs just get louder and louder as the excitement of Christmas really sets in. Sometimes the local newspaper will feature a map of lighted homes throughout the area. ORNAMENTS! Nothing says home like homemade ornaments on the tree. Some dried macaroni, yarn, beads, popsicle sticks, buttons, and paint and you’ve got enough supplies to make a variety of ornaments. Don’t forget to take your Sharpie and mark who made the ornament and the year on the back! CHRISTMAS TREE HUNTING Yes, it is so much easier to go to a Christmas Tree lot and pick one out. Just point, pay, and they will carry it out and tie it on your car for you. But….it is more fun and fulfilling to go to a Christmas tree farm with your trusty axe, rubber boots, and warm jackets and hike around looking for that perfect tree. The kids will have a blast running from tree to tree looking for the one they love. Make a day of it. Most Christmas tree farms not only offer the perfect tree, but almost always they also have hot chocolate, hot cider, and a few activities to keep everyone in the spirit of the holiday.

TRADITIONAL HOLIDAY DISHES

Around the World ENGLAND Also known as Christmas pie, mince pies date back to the 13th century. When knights returned from the Crusades, they often brought back exotic spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, MINCE PIE and cloves that were used to flavor big pies made with mincemeat and dried fruits. As time wore on, they shrank to small, single-serving pies filled with more sweet fruit and dusted with powdered sugar.

FRANCE As visually pleasing as it is delicious, this traditional yule log is made from classic sponge cake filled with raspberry jam, rolled and covered in chocolate ganache to look like a real log. Its origins date back to the Iron BUCHE DE NOEL Age, when the end of the winter solstice in late December was commemorated by burning logs decorated with ivy and holly to cleanse the air of the previous year’s events.

ISRAEL A traditional Hanukkah dish, fried latkes have a delicious and spiritual history. As one night’s worth of oil could last for eight nights, and Hanukkah is a celebration that spans LATKES eight days, it is customary to make foods fried in oil during this time. Other traditional delicacies include Sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts) and fritters.

CHINA As in western culture, Christmas day involves a family feast. But instead of the Western traditional turkey or ham, Chinese families are more likely to eat the foods associated with PORK Chinese New Year. These might include roast barbecued pork, chicken, and soup with wood ears ( a mushroom that is commonly dried and used in Chinese cuisine).

ITALY The Feast of the Seven Fishes is a Christmas Eve tradition that links back to Roman Catholicism — the seven types of fish refer to the seven sacraments. There are no rules on FISH the varieties of fish prepared, although it is customary to serve eel, especially in the southern region of Amalfi.

POLAND In Poland, Christmas Eve is a day first of fasting, then of feasting. The Wigilia feast begins at the appearance of the first star. There is no red meat served but fish, usually carp. The supper, which includes many traditional dishes and desserts, can sometimes last for over two hours.

O

When I am cooking a meal in the kitchen and I need to add oil to a certain recipe I immediately reach for the olive oil. It is a staple in most homes for cooking but what you may not know is that it has many health benefits. As a food ingredient, olives themselves are made up of 18 to 28 percent oil. About 75 percent of it is heart-healthy monounsaturated fatty acid or MUFA. Commercial producers press fresh olives harvested mainly in countries that border the Mediterranean Sea. These countries include Italy, Spain, and Greece. In fact, 98 percent of the world’s olive oil production comes from just 17 countries. Good-quality olive oil offers many health benefits and contains essential vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants. This oil is also gentle on your digestive system and prevents gallstones and soothes ulcers. It also delays or eliminates the onset of diabetes and promotes weight loss. If olive oil isn’t yet a regular part of your diet, it’s time to make a change. Chronic inflammation is thought to be a leading driver of diseases, such as Cancer, Heart Disease, Metabolic Syndrome, Type 2 Diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Arthritis and even Obesity. Olive oil can reduce inflammation, which may be one of the main reasons for its health benefits. The main antiinflammatory effects are mediated by the antioxidants. Key among them is oleocanthal, which has been shown to work similarly to ibuprofen, an anti-inflammatory drug. Some scientists estimate that the oleocanthal in 3 ½ tablespoons of olive oil has a similar effect as 10% of the adult dosage of ibuprofen. Olive oil is also loaded with powerful antioxidants. These antioxidants are biologically active and may reduce your risk of chronic diseases. They also fight inflammation and help protect your blood cholesterol from oxidation — two benefits that may lower your risk of heart disease. It has been noticed that people in Mediterranean countries have a lower 42 - 2018 Holiday Gift Guide

risk of some cancers, and many researchers believe that olive oil may be the reason. The antioxidants in olive oil can reduce oxidative damage due to free radicals, which is believed to be a leading driver of cancer. More research is needed to determine whether olive oil in fact reduces your risk of cancer. Buying the right kind of olive oil is extremely important. Extra virgin olive oil retains some of the antioxidants and bioactive compounds from olives. For this reason, it’s considered healthier than the more refined variety of olive oil. Be careful though, there is a lot of fraud on the olive oil market, as many oils that read “extra virgin” on the label have been diluted with other refined oils. Therefore, examine labels carefully to ensure you’re getting real olive oil. It’s always a good idea to read ingredients lists and check for quality certification. Who says olive oil is only for the kitchen? It is naturally packed with anti-aging antioxidants and hydrating squalene, making it awesome for hair, skin, and nails. Olive oil has been used as a hair treatment since ancient Egyptian times. Give yourself a scalp-nourishing hot oil massage by warming up 1 tablespoon of extra virgin oil. Do not boil it. Wait for the olive oil to cool a bit before massaging it onto your scalp. It opens up the pores and penetrate deeper into hair follicles, feeding them with potent nutrients. Put a few drops of olive and rub into your hands and cuticles. In the dry winter months, your hair is more prone to breakage, splitting and frizzy flyaways that make your sleek haircut look messy and unkempt. A little olive oil can help smooth away some of those problems. It adds weight and moisture to the hair and is ideal as a quick fix. Just smooth a little olive oil on your fingers and run them through your hair after you’ve styled it and say goodbye to flyaways and frizzies. Have a bit of a dandruff problem? Try this natural solution and you will be happy with the results. Mix equal amounts of olive oil, lemon juice and water – a few tablespoons of each should suffice. Massage into damp scalp, leave on for 20 minutes, rinse and shampoo. Use this flake-fighting treatment no more than every other week. You will notice the difference!

BLOOD ORANGE PORT MARMALADE

INGREDIENTS 6 blood oranges

Oh, this recipe has stolen my heart. I eat it with cheese, on toast, as a glaze on chicken and roast vegetables. I have mixed it in cocktails and yes, eaten it out of the jar with a spoon. I am warning you. It is amazing. Rich red from the flesh of blood oranges, finely textured shreds of peel from the citrus, subtly sweet and rich from the addition of port. It is everything a marmalade should be, complex and powerful and beautiful, in the jar, on the plate, in the mouth. Enjoy. This recipe is adapted from one we found in one of our old canning standbys, The Complete Book of Small-Batch Preserving by Ellie Top and Margaret Howard. I’ve scaled up the recipe to accommodate a larger batch, because the original only made one pint. And that was clearly not enough. While it is often inadvisable to double recipes for jam, because the larger quantity results in longer cooking times and difficulty getting the proper pectin set, the large quantities of peel in this recipe contain plenty of pectin to accommodate a slightly increased cooking time.

3 cups water

Because the peels of conventionally grown citrus fruits are often exposed to pesticides, we recommend using only organic produce in this recipe, particularly.

1 1/2 cup port wine

Makes about 3 pints.

3 3/4 cups granulated sugar

DIRECTIONS

EQUIPMENT

1. PREPARE YOUR EQUIPMENT Prepare the jars and water bath canner.

3 Meyer lemons

Our must have canning supplies Sharp paring knife Optional: citrus zester If you are not familiar with the water bath canning method watch our water bath canning video workshop. Always make sure you are following all safety guidelines outlined by the USDA when canning anything.

2. PREPARE YOUR INGREDIENTS Wash the oranges well, being sure to remove any wax, if present. Remove the thin outer rind from the oranges, leaving behind as much white pith as possible. The citrus zester makes this easy, and creates a nice, even texture, but a sharp paring knife works as well. If using a knife, remove the peel in large pieces, and slice into strips. Place the peels into a jam pot or other large stock pot. Slice the remaining white pith off of the blood orange fruits and discard. Coarsely chop the citrus, discarding any seeds, and add it to the pot. Zest or slice the peel of the lemons, discarding the white pith. Coarsely chop the flesh. Add the fruit and peel to the pot, taking care to remove any seeds. 3. BRING POT TO BOIL Add the water and wine to the pot, and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat and boil gently for 30 minutes.

4. ADD SUGAR, COOK UNTIL DESIRED SET Add the sugar; bring to a boil and boil rapidly, uncovered, stirring frequently. Boil the marmalade until the mixture will form a gel, usually from 20-30 minutes. Longer cooking times will result in a stiffer marmalade. 5. PACK YOUR JARS & PROCESS Ladle into hot, clean jars with 1/4-1/2 “ headspace, and process in a boiling water-bath canner for 10 minutes.
