CREATIVE WAYS TO TAKE YOUR RAISED BED AND PLANTER GARDENING TO NEW HEIGHTS
Generations of space-challenged gardeners have relied on raised beds and planting boxes to grow a harvest of vegetables, fruits and herbs - even in the tightest spaces. Vertical gardening gave us a whole new way to garden in tight spots, by encouraging plants to grow up, rather than spread out. Now, by marrying the two techniques, you can create a visually stunning, artistic display of gardening prowess that will keep your table full of fresh produce throughout the summer. Building the foundation A well-built, durable planting foundation, such as a raised bed or planting box made from Redwood, is an essential starting point. Decide where yours will go and start building. You can find free project plans online to help you build the frame for a raised bed or a planting box. Whatever style of planter you build, it’s important to choose a quality construction material. Redwood is often the choice of savvy gardeners because it’s naturally rot resistant as well as durable and easy to work with. It needs no chemical finishes or paints to preserve or beautify it, and is harvested from sustainably managed forests. Simple steps onward and upward With a good foundation in place, it’s time to consider all the ways you can turn your raised bed or planter into a vertical masterpiece. Adding a simple trellis to your raised bed or planting box is an easy way to maximize your growing space. For example, you can plant shrub-type plants like peppers in a row in the front portion of the planter, then add a trellis in the back portion and encourage vining veggies like beans, peas and cucumbers to grow up the structure. For larger raised beds, you can build a vineyard style pergola above the bed. A sturdy pergola made from Redwood can support a variety of substantial plants such as squash, but you don’t have to be limited to fruits and veggies that grow on vines. Affix small boxes or even burlap bags to allow for greater variety in your vertical garden. Loftier ambitions Is your raised bed nestled against a wall? Or perhaps your planting box perches on one side of your backyard deck. You can add a free-standing wall by building a redwood frame and stretching hex wire across the frame. Vines will readily climb
the wire, but you can also attach terra cotta pots to the wire to hold herbs, small vegetables and even flowers.
In a variation on the trellis concept, you can build a framework with multiple rows of narrow redwood troughs
above your raised bed or planting box; the troughs make a great growing spot for herbs. You can also create a stepped planter by building a series of boxes in graduated sizes and then stacking them atop each other widest to narrowest. Or, for a more modern look, build a contemporary ladder-style vertical garden with box-shaped removable planters. For those of you that want to purse gardening in a raised bed and don’t have the time or the skill to DYI consider the Knox Garden Box. Hand-made with high quality redwood, in a variety of sizes and heights. Created locally by Warren Knox, with sustainable products. He has be hand crafting the Knox box for over 20 years. It ‘s durable, pest resistant and can be used in small spaces. So whether you purchase one or build one it’s a great time to explore creative ways to bring vertical gardening and raised beds or planter boxes together for a bountiful harvest!

REFRESH YOUR HOME FOR SPRING
As the seasons change, many people commit to starting fresh or making positive changes. As you consider what you will change in your life, think about where you spend the majority of your time. Your surroundings can greatly influence your mood and actions, and a refreshed interior can help you step forward into a new and improved lifestyle.
Color Home decor trends are constantly evolving, and one of the most obvious aspects of changing style is color. An easy, cost-effective way to instantly modernize
your home is to update your walls to a new and trendy color. Use today’s colors as inspiration for other decorating elements as well to create a cohesive, modern atmosphere. In one weekend you can completely transform the aesthetic of your home. Lowquality, inexpensive paint will likely require a number of coats to get the coverage needed, resulting in more time and money spent. To avoid increased time and cost, use a premium line of paint, which guarantees excellent hide and outstanding durability.
Accents Whether your taste is classic and elegant, natural and rustic, or clean and modern, accessories have a huge impact on the feel of any room. Mirrors, wall hangings, table art, pillows, and floral arrangements are just some examples of accents that can completely change the look and feel of a space. Don’t be afraid to combine materials and styles, either. An ornate brass mirror can work well to complement the clean lines of a modern end table or the intricate fabric of an antique footstool. Avoid clutter as you add visual accessories by using baskets, chests and other storage pieces to conceal magazines, books, and other common items.
Rearrange Replacing your current furniture may not be in your budget, but don’t underestimate the effect rearranging your current pieces can have on your space. Simply changing the layout of a room costs nothing and can have a dramatic impact on the functionality and atmosphere of your home. Place larger furniture pieces against the wall to open up floor space and avoid blocking walking paths. Or, you might arrange your sofa or elongated pieces of furniture at an angle in the corner of the room to give the illusion of a longer wall and also instantly create hidden storage opportunities. This update is as temporary as you want it to be, so don’t be afraid to try something new. You might even rearrange every few months to keep things fresh throughout the year. Lighting To instantly give your space a new look, consider changing the lighting. Whether it’s a large hanging fixture, wall sconces, standing lamps or recessed can

lights, adjusting your current lighting will have a significant effect on the ambience of any room. A mixture of light sources works best for most spaces, and a visit to a local lighting store will confirm the options are endless. While many lights will serve functional purposes, others may serve as pure decoration to highlight an aspect of the room, such as a piece of artwork. And, like furniture, remember that simply adjusting the locations of table and floor lamps can have a dramatic impact your room’s feel. Bring your home into 2019 by focusing on a few key areas. You will glad you did when you enjoy your improved living space!
STEPS TO MAKE YOUR HOME MORE LUXURIOUS
It is easier than ever to create a home environment that pampers you each and every day. To create your luxurious lifestyle, begin by incorporating fixtures that blend functionality, aesthetic appeal and innovative design beyond general living areas into practical rooms like the kitchen and bath where you can easily add style, functionality and character to the ambiance of your entire home. As you explore high-quality products and fittings, there is a wide array of products with high-end technology solutions that enhance everyday living. Increased attention to design and aesthetics have elevated many home products beyond basic functional needs. Today, the humble faucet can have high-quality features that focus on sustainability, ease of use and, of course, high-end appearances. Today, faucet designs range from traditional to ultra-modern, classical to futuristic, or even intricately embellished to minimalistic and sleek. This variety of styles allows you to use the fixture as a key design element in you kitchen or bath. For example, when creating an opulent bath space, details like Swarovski crystal accents on faucet finials can enhance the lavish feel of your bath instead of simply blending in. Delta Faucet Company industrial designer Celine Garland says these small details can make all the difference in the overall design of your kitchen or bath space. “Just as a statement necklace or bright heel can take a little black dress from everyday to jaw-dropping, the perfect faucet can provide the finishing touch that transforms your kitchen or bath from memorable to unforgettable,” Garland says. Functionality: Beyond aesthetics, innovative enhancements, such as touch activations, add convenience and a sense of ease to both the kitchen and bath space. For instance, the Brizo Charlotte electronic lavatory faucet brings more to the bath experience than just its flowing lines and classical elegance; it also increases ease of use through SmartTouchPlus Technology, which enables both hands-free and touchsensitive operation. Additionally, TempIQ Temperature Control Technology senses the temperature of the water before it leaves the spout. An LED light built into the top of the faucet changes color from blue to magenta to red, letting users know exactly when water has reached the desired temperature. It automatically adjusts the water mixture to ensure a consistent water temperature and
bath and kitchen fittings can bring a new dimension of luxury to the home. So, when planning your next luxury home upgrade, don’t forget how incorporating modern technologies into these often overlooked accents can enhance both your design aesthetic and your everyday experience.(BPT)
includes a high-temperature limit stop that offers an added degree of safety in the bath. Water conservation: In addition to luxury, modern bath fittings offer sensible and environmentally friendly features that delight eco-minded consumers. New technologies that add greater dimensions to water flow provide a more satisfying experience without increasing water consumption. Look for the WaterSense label to identify lavatory and shower products that help conserve water while performing as well or better than less efficient models. By adding fashion and functionality,

EXTERIOR HOME IMPROVEMENTS YIELD HIGHER ROI FOR LESS MONEY
Renovation season is approaching. Do you know what home improvements will give you the best return for your money? Here’s a hint: step outside. You might assume upgrades to interior spaces like kitchens and bathrooms have the best payoff, but most home improvements don’t return 100 percent of their value at the time of resale. Those that yield the best return on investment for the most modest costs are generally exterior improvements. “Home Improvements” on page 12

“Home Improvements” from page 12 Outside the box Interior projects like a minor kitchen renovation or bathroom upgrade return a decent percentage of your initial investment when you sell your home - about 80 percent and 65 percent, respectively, according to Remodeling’s Cost vs. Value report. However, they can also cost tens of thousands of dollars. By contrast, exterior projects like adding a deck or replacing a garage door deliver similar high rates of return, but for far less cost. Adding a composite deck can cost around $17,000 and yield an ROI of more than 65 percent, while a garage door typically costs less than $2,000 and returns nearly 77 percent of your investment when you sell. In fact, six of the eight improvements with the best ROI on Remodeling’s report were exterior projects, and their average payback was nearly 75 percent. Top exterior projects Here are popular exterior projects that offer high ROI, according to the Cost vs. Value report:
• Roof replacement - A midrange roof replacement costs approximately $20,000 and returns nearly 69 percent of the investment. What’s more, a new roof helps protect your entire home from weather damage and can improve curb appeal. • Composite deck addition - Costs vary, but Remodeling bases its evaluation of ROI on a cost of about $17,000. At that price, adding a composite deck delivers ROI of 65.2 percent. Of course, the value of your deck will depend on many factors, including the quality of the building
products you choose. Capped board composites, like Envision Decking by TAMKO Building Products, are gaining popularity. Envision Inspiration, the latest in the TAMKO collection, was introduced in late 2016, and features striking color patterns for a visual effect that’s as appealing as the financial ROI of composite decking. • Siding replacement - Another exterior feature that protects the whole home and greatly affects its curb appeal, new siding can cost around $14,500. When you sell your home, that new siding will recoup about 76 percent of your initial investment. • Garage door replacement - Older garage doors may lack modern insulating qualities and a shabby-looking door can drag down the look of your home. Replacing the
garage door costs roughly $1,700 and returns nearly 77 percent of that amount at the time of resale. • Steel entry door - The single exterior home improvement with the greatest ROI is also one of the cheapest and easiest to do. Replacing a wooden door with a steel entry door will run you about $1,400 and you’ll recoup more than 90 percent of that cost when you sell your home. Exterior home improvements not only enhance your enjoyment of your home and help maintain its security, they’re also the first things potential buyers see when they pull up to the curb. When you want to make cost-effective, high-ROI improvements, making exterior upgrades is money well spent.(BPT)

H O U S E O F F E R M E N TAT I O N After we moved from Japan thirty years ago, our diet transitioned from traditional Japanese to one of more Western style. Without the rich probiotics commonly found in traditional Japanese food, we both began seeing signs of various digestion related health problems over time. When we met 16 years ago, our motivation to improve our families’ health and wellbeing became our everyday mission, sparking the desire to spread the word of the importance of fermented foods and the profound effects on the body. We decided to expand our production of our handmade miso to share this superfood with you! The two of us began the fermented food workshop out of our home kitchens. Since then, we have been holding classes at New Leaf Community Market on the Westside and through Cabrillo Extension Program. We have also been handcrafting thousands of pounds of miso at the El Pajaro Commercial Kitchen Incubator for Hakouya’s Probiotic Miso Dressing. Each batch of miso must ferment for at least five months to achieve the salty, rich flavor before it is ready to be made into
dressing. Our handmade miso itself is packed with protein, vitamins, minerals and probiotics. Our probiotic miso dressing offers valuable enzymes with major health benefits. The main ingredient of miso paste, koji, is a natural and beneficial fungus that is found in many traditional condiments such as miso, soy sauce, sake and mirin. Not only does koji have the most enzymes of all probiotic foods, but it boosts the nutritional content of foods and promotes
THE MAJOR HEALTH BENEFITS OF KOJI ARE: • Antioxidant • Immune system support • Aids in the digestion and absorption of other foods
• Reduces allergy symptoms • Improve metabolism • Reduces risk of breast, prostate, lung and colon cancers • Reduces radiation effects by discharging it from the body 14 / April 6 & 7, 2019 / Home & Garden Expo of Monterey www.montereyhomeshow.com
extended preservation. Other miso in stores lose many valuable enzymes because the fermentation process is halted before packaging. We keep all major enzymes of Koji as it breaks down fat and fiber, protein down into umami, and starch into sweetness. We use our dressing as a sweet and tangy addition for any meal-- including as a substitute for mayonnaise or as a marinade on any veggies, tofu, fish and meat. One of our favorites is to mash a couple of spoonfuls with avocado for the perfect spread! You will see our miso dressing in the refrigerator section at our local stores very soon.
