July 4th is Always Big for

World’s Shortest Parade in Aptos! A Letter from the Aptos Chamber of Commerce President, Gary Smith Welcome to the Aptos July 4th Parade, renowned as one of the best parades on the Central Coast! Aptos rallies and enjoys the experiences of its community during the parade. We will see the sports teams, local youth efforts, public safety, and many groups that have messages to deliver on July 4th, Independence Day. This year’s Grand Marshal will be Lisa Fraser, a professional educator, school principal and a heartfelt favorite of the students, business people and her fellow educators. Lisa will be leading the way and will be smiling big-time for the theme of the parade – “Be True to Your School”. Parade organizers and the Chamber membership are very serious about the need for a good educational system. We are going to raise $50,000 to help the Pajaro Valley Unified School District save the music program in their schools. You will see musicians and local organizations pushing this message as they deliver their very entertaining presentations while marching down Soquel Drive. The Aptos Chamber has been a proud sponsor and organizer of the Aptos July 4th Parade since 1992. The success of the Pancake Breakfast, Parade and Afternoon in the Park depends on the community support of the Sheriff’s Office, the California Highway Patrol, the Aptos La Selva Fire District, Waste Management, American Medical Response, Granite Construction, Barry Swenson Builder, Acme & Sons Sanitation, the Boy Scouts, the Capitola Aptos Rotary, the Cabrillo Host Lions, Britannia Arms, Pacific Coffee Roasting, Aptos Feed, community volunteers and Chamber members that provide manpower, food, services and space to make it all possible. The Aptos Chamber works with government, businesses and homeowner groups to help achieve a better future for Aptos. This year we are focused on providing the following services: We provide networking opportunities, education and fun for our 550 members with informative breakfast speakers, business mixers, the Business Showcase, marketing classes, our golf and tennis tournament and our theater Gala with Cabrillo Stage. Annually, we award special recognition to those people, businesses and organizations that make the Aptos community such a special place to live and raise our families. Our Governmental Affairs Committee is working on a number of projects to better our community. We’re working with the County Planning Department to clarify and simplify the permit process; with Soquel Creek Water District to help address the challenge of providing an adequate water supply; on long term transportation solutions involving Highway One and the rail corridor; on our Community Enhancement Committee; cleaning up the Village for the parade. We’ve already been hard at work. We were responsible for removing the derelict Terrible Herbst gas station; coordinating a mural project for the new Safeway gas station building; working on the Aptos Village and Seacliff Village Plans; working with CalTrans on landscape improvements to Highway One; working on a skate park for Aptos youth; and recognizing improvements to our town with Community Enhancement Awards. We have also built a great little museum of Aptos history from the Indians to the earthquake. March 19th, 2005 we will be holding a centennial celebration of aviation pioneer John Montgomery’s high altitude flights in Aptos. Our Chamber office is very busy helping over 10,000 residents and visitors each year. Our Executive Directors, John and Karen Hibble and their staff are very friendly and always ready to help answer questions and find solutions to issues. Stop by any time at our office at 7605 Old Dominion Court, across from the Seacliff Inn, or call us at 688-1467. We’re always pleased to help you in any way! 6

local education leader awarded the position of

Grand Marshal by J.D. Young

Lisa Fraser is well known to the Aptos community. A product of local schools, Ms.Fraser brought her college education back to Santa Cruz County, making a huge positive contribution in the education of our children. In 1995, during a time of low morale and low achievement scores, Lisa took over the helm at Aptos Junior High School. In a tense atmosphere of distrust and student discipline problems, Lisa brought an enlightened approach and no-nonsense attitude to the school and turned AJHS around with significant improvements in student achievement, fiscal accountability, public trust, school climate and staff morale. This improvement also filtered down to Aptos area elementary schools. A visionary leader who clearly ‘walks her talk,’ Lisa was the first to embrace and introduce the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence, a model from the business world that is used within Fortune 500 companies. Due to her success with the use of the model, Lisa was recognized and hired as an examiner for the Malcolm Baldridge Quality Award, which is the highest level of national recognition for performance excellence that a US organization can receive. A Baldrige examiner is a prestigious position and those selected meet the highest standards of qualifications and peer recognition. Utilizing the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence, Lisa has provided training and consultation to school districts throughout California. In her more recent role as co-director of the California Center for Baldrige in Education, she trained hundreds of administrators and school leadership teams over the past several years. She is an excellent presenter and public speaker due to her deep understanding of organizational performance and communicates the value of these principles in an inspirational manner. Currently the Director of Community Research at Applied Survey Research in Watsonville, Lisa will set sail again this fall when she will lend her leadership to Fisher Middle School in Los Gatos as their new principal. We’ll all miss Lisa and the success with which she has guided our children. She will always be our Grand Marshal.

history of the Aptos Parade by John Hibble

The World’s Shortest Parade Has Come a Long Way!

In 1961, much to the horror of local citizens, a zoning change was proposed that would have allowed a cement batching plant to be built in the center of Aptos Village. Locals rose up against the proposal. Concerned women such as Lucille Aldrich, Anne Isaacs, Babe Toney and others formed the “Aptos Ladies Tuesday Evening Society” and organized themselves to defeat the zoning change. Their efforts were successful, and after their victory, a barbecue was held on Memorial Day in celebration. The event was so popular that a parade and pot luck were planned to follow on the fourth of July. Everyone turned out in old fashioned clothes and the Monterey Bay Antique Car Club brought 18 vintage cars. A number of visitors stopped to view the parade when the “Sun Tan Special”, the train that once transported visitors from the San Francisco peninsula to Santa Cruz, passed through Aptos Village and stopped for the parade. “It was a happy coincidence that the parade coincided with the train passing through”, recalled Lucile Aldrich. Later that year, when the Southern Pacific Rail Road tried to close the crossing in front of the Bayview Hotel, the Aptos Ladies’ Tuesday Evening Society again took action and, dressed in Victorian clothes, invited the press and laid themselves down upon the rail road tracks. Eventually, the court decided the Southern Pacific could not close off the right-of-way, and the Ladies were again victorious. This second victory provided the impetus for continuing the parade.

Originally, the parade route was from the Driftwood Gas Station at Trout Gulch Road (better known as the now defunct Terrible Herbst) to the Pop Inn restaurant (Britannia Arms) and back to the Bayview Hotel. It lasted less than ten minutes. Soon, food booths were set up to help raise money for Mar Vista School and ears of corn were sold. Children’s’ games and contests were added including a cow milking contest. The pancake breakfast was added in 1987, and is a cooperative venture between the Aptos Chamber of Commerce and the Aptos Lions Club. In 1992, after thirty years of successful organization, the Aptos Ladies Tuesday Evening Society retired from the job and turned the parade over to the Aptos Chamber of Commerce. The once tiny parade has grown into a huge event for Aptos.

save the music Chamber Drive to Save Aptos Music Hits High Note.

by J. D. Young As school districts continue to take budgetary hits from the state, local administrators have again zeroed in on music programs for elimination. Locally, the vocal and instrumental music classes at Aptos Junior High School (AJHS) are slated to be cut this coming year. And that doesn’t sit well with students, parents and the business community of Aptos. Sometimes certain actions happen to strike a resonant chord and set things in motion. That’s just what took place when the Aptos Chamber of Commerce heard that the music program at Aptos Junior High was slated for elimination due to budgetary problems. Quickly springing into action, the Chamber organized a “Save the Music in Aptos” committee to run a $50,000 fund raising campaign. The Chamber immediately approached Ms. Christine Amato-Quinn, the North Zone Assistant Superintendent for the Pajaro Valley Unified School District, to help coordinated the effort. Ms. Amato-Quinn didn’t miss a beat and gathered the principals from Aptos’ six North Zone schools and several concerned parents to join the committee. The “Save the Music in Aptos Schools” campaign set the goal of raising $50,000 by the Fourth of July to keep vocal and instrumental music at AJHS. The Aptos community responded with their hearts and their checkbooks. Devising a series of fundraisers including gourmet coffee sales and the now famous “Save the Music in Aptos Schools” milk cartons seen on business desks and shop counters all around the Aptos area, the Chamber has received many donations. With a healthy initial donation of $2,000 from Aptos Safeway employees, the Chamber’s “Save the Music” program is nearing their goal. But more support is still needed. An additional $30,000 will give the Aptos music programs a two year buffer while the PVUSD establishes a permanent music program for all district schools. For additional information or to contribute directly, contact the Aptos Chamber of Commerce at 688-1467 or email christine_quinn@pvusd.net
