GRAND MARSHAL Aptos-La Selva Fire Captain

Greg Hansen After 39 years of service for the Aptos-La Selva Fire Protection District, Captain Greg Hansen will retire on July 13, 2019. Born in Northridge, California on April 11th, 1957, Captain Hansen grew up in Southern California. He began his career in public safety in Redding, California with the US Forest Service in 1977 and served as a Firefighter in the Shasta Trinity National Forest before moving to Aptos in 1980. After serving briefly with both the City of Marina Department of Public Safety and Castroville Fire Department, he was hired with the Aptos Fire Department on October 15th, 1980. Captain Hansen was promoted to Fire Captain with the Aptos-La Selva Fire District in February of 1990 while also later serving as an Acting Battalion Chief for the Department. He is currently assigned as the Aptos Station 1 Captain on B Shift and leads his crew on Engine 3511 which responds to all 911 calls in Aptos. His accolades and achievements include being named VFW Firefighter of the Year on three separate occasions, “Man of the Year” on four separate occasions as named by the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors, the California State Assembly, the California State Senate, and the Congressional Award from the United States Congress. Captain Hansen was awarded the National Gold Medal Award as the EMT of the Year for 2010 as he was directly involved in saving the life of a young man who’d been electrocuted by downed power lines. His simple rules for success in the Fire Service are to provide the highest level of service without limitations and to remember to have fun. Captain Hansen will routinely tell anyone that working in the Fire Service is the best job in the world. Even after over 40 years in the profession, Captain Hansen races his crew to the fire engine after receiving a 911 call. The Fire Service in Aptos is better because of Captain Hansen’s dedication, loyalty, and commitment to excellence in public safety. After 39 years with the District it is time to retire and move on to the next chapter. While fixing mini bikes, playing more golf, taking road trips, and building a new home in Scottsdale AZ are in the plans right now, he would like to once again contribute to public safety and community service after he gets settled into retirement. Please recognize Captain Hansen for his 43 years of service in public safety and for his decorated career as a member of the Aptos-La Selva Fire Protection District. Happy Retirement!

Letter from the Aptos Chamber of Commerce President

On behalf of the Aptos Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, our members, local business owners and the Aptos community, I am proud to again welcome you all to the 58th annual 4th of July Festivities: Worlds Shortest Parade, Pancake Breakfast and Party in the Park. Together we join to celebrate our national independence and recognize the best of which Aptos has to offer. This is my favorite time of year and we are thrilled that you are able to join us for the celebration of all things Aptos. As you travel down the Soquel Drive parade route, you will see over a dozen new businesses that have opened, or will be opening very soon. We are proud of how our Village has evolved and encourage you to spend some time here and get to know it. The theme for this year’s events is “Anchors Away”, as we celebrate the centennial of the SS Palo Alto. For the last 100 years our “Cement Ship” (it’s actually made of concrete) has protected the shores of Seacliff Beach while maintaining its iconic appeal to residents and visitors alike. The Grand Marshal for this year’s events is Captain Greg Hansen. As the Aptos La Selva Fire Captain and Public Education Officer, Captain Hansen has served Aptos for the past 30 years. As he leads the festivities and today’s parade, please thank Greg for his heroic service. Finally, I would like to thank the numerous volunteers, public officials and first responders, who make this event possible through year round planning, organizing floats, closing streets, directing traffic, flipping pancakes and of course the clean-up.

World’s Shortest Parade Has Come a Long Way!

Parade Founder: Lucile Aldrich -by John Hibble

is America’s birthday and many communities have parades to celebrate that fact. The freedom to determine our own future was at the center of the founding of our country. The “World’s Shortest Parade” in Aptos is also about selfdetermination but it was not originally about America’s birthday. The Granite Rock Company, founded in 1900, has been an important part of the history of Santa Cruz County. The great construction boom in houses and highways in the late 1950s and ‘60s meant that Granite had to build new cement batching plants to supply the need for concrete throughout the region. Cement, sand, and aggregate are stored at the batching plant and mixed to order, then sent out in giant “cement mixer” trucks to the construction sites. In 1959, the last remnants of the apple industry in Aptos Village closed down. Aptos was an industrial town with no industry. Granite Rock Company purchased land in the Village and applied to the county for a zoning change to build a batching plant. That is why the street across from the Post Office is named Granite Way. There is nothing wrong with a concrete plant but no one in Aptos Village wanted it in their back yard. Locals rose up against the proposal. Concerned women formed the “Aptos Ladies Tuesday Evening Society” and organized themselves to defeat the zoning change. The group included Lucille Aldrich, Anne Isaacs, Babe Toney, Peggy Marceron, Jessie Elliott, Birdie Jacobs, Beverly Palmer, Nola Gales, Pat Thompson, Joyce West, Peggy Hunter, Mrs. Harrison Smith, Dee Small, Betty Jo Jensen, and Nita Jellison. Their efforts were successful. To celebrate their victory, a barbecue was held on Memorial Day, 1961, in the field next to the railroad track. The event was so popular that a parade and pot luck were planned to follow on the fourth of July. Everyone turned out in old fashioned clothes and the Monterey Bay Antique Car Club brought 18 vintage cars. The parade route was from the Driftwood Gas Station at Trout Gulch Road (where Bay Federal Credit Union is now located) to the Pop Inn restaurant, (formerly Little OWL Italian Kitchen and now the Parish Publick continued on page 20

House). The parade only lasted ten minutes and that is how the “World’s Shortest Parade” got its name. The second year, the “Sun Tan Special,” the train that once transported visitors from the San Francisco Peninsula to Santa Cruz, was in its final year of service. The Aptos Ladies had planted red, white and blue petunias along the railroad track from the Bay View Hotel to the Pop Inn. When the train reached Aptos on July 4th, the engineer stopped the train so that the passengers could get off and enjoy the festivities. “It was a happy coincidence that the parade coincided with the train passing through,” recalled Lucile Aldrich. Games were also held in the field including sack races, a watermelon eating contest, horseshoes, kick the can, peanut runs, shoe kicking, and foot races. The third year, the American Legion post was the first to set up a food booth with chili, coffee and pies. The following year, the Pop Inn offered hot dogs and soft drinks. Santa Cruz Dairy Farms wanted to sell ice cream so Lucile asked them to bring a cow for a milking contest. They brought two cows for five or six years but eventually the herd was moved away which ended the contest. In the mid1970s the games and food booths were moved to Aptos Village Park which had just been completed. The pancake breakfast was added in 1987, as a cooperative venture between the Aptos Chamber of Commerce and the Aptos Lions Club and is currently organized by the Chamber and the Search and Rescue Team. In 1992, after thirty years of successful parade organization, the Aptos Ladies Tuesday Evening Society retired from the job and turned the parade over to the Aptos Chamber of Commerce. The once tiny parade has grown into a huge event for Aptos. The “World’s Shortest Parade” has gained national recognition as one of only seven Fourth of July parades recommended in 2013 as the “Best” by prestigious Condé Nast Traveler. What better way to celebrate Independence Day than having a “stick-to-your-ribs” pancake breakfast, and then, either watch the parade or be in it, and finally to have lunch and dance the afternoon away, with the band “Extra Large” in Aptos Village Park? You will celebrate freedom from cooking and doing the dishes, you will have a great day and also help to support the parade that gives Aptos a little slice of fame and a big slice of “home town” feeling. Happy Independence Day!

Cement Ship SS Palo Alto

-by Kevin Newhouse

The S.S. Palo Alto, aka the Cement Ship, is one of Aptos’ most iconic images. She is also one of the oldest surviving links to our past. In fact, 2019 marks the 100-year anniversary of the launch of the Cement Ship. Built as an oil tanker during WWI, the Cement Ship wasn’t actually launched until May 29, 1919, a full six months after Armistice was signed and the war had ended. She was built by the SF Shipbuilding Company at the US Navel Shipyard on Government Island, which is in the harbor between Oakland and Alameda. Due to her size, the Palo Alto had to be launched sideways causing a huge wave to cross the 200-yard channel that separated the ship from the mainland. No longer needed for her intended purpose, the Palo Alto sat, virtually discarded, for most of the next four years. The only voyage under her own power took place on January 2, 1921, when she sailed across San Francisco Bay to the Hunter’s Point dry dock. Meanwhile, down in Aptos, the Seacliff Amusement Corporation was formed with the intention of building a resort on Seacliff Beach. They wanted to bring the Palo Alto down to Aptos and turn her into an entertainment ship fully equipped with dining, dancing, swimming, gaming, fishing, and more! They had even planned on putting 150 staterooms underneath the deck, which at the time would have turned the ship into one of the biggest hotels in Santa Cruz County! The main industry in Aptos had gone from ranching, to logging, to apples, and the Seacliff Amusement Corporation was correct with their prediction that the next big industry move would be tourism, but unfortunately their timing was all wrong. This was 1929 and the country was about to enter a time of financial continued on page 24

collapse with the stock market crash in October (Black Thursday) followed by the Great Depression. The Seacliff Amusement Corporation purchased The Palo Alto for an undisclosed amount of money and on January 21, 1930, the voyage to her final resting place would begin. She was towed by a Red Stack tug whose orders were to keep her speed under five knots and arrived in Aptos the following morning. They had a special preview opening on June 21, 1930, and the official opening night was the following Saturday. The music of Ed Rookledge and his 10-piece orchestra filled the Rainbow Ballroom. The Sentinel reported that 2,000 cars visited Seacliff Beach that weekend and an estimated 3,000 people boarded the Palo Alto! Business slowed over the next several months, partially due to tourist season coming to an end but also because the financial collapse of the national economy was beginning to take a toll locally. During the winter of 1930-31, the ship was closed more often than not. The winter of 1932 was quite stormy and did significant damage to the road leading down to the ship and to the ship itself. A crack in the hull amidships had formed and the Palo Alto was closed for business. The road was eventually repaired. The ship was not. On April 26, 1932, the Palo Alto was boarded up. It was the beginning of the end. Sadly, just 3 years after the Seacliff Amusement Corporation formed, they defaulted on a loan and the ship’s doors were be closed for good. The dream of a resort in Seacliff was dead. The ship was eventually sold in 1936 to the California Division of Parks for just $1. The crack in the hull was enlarged during the storms of 1939 but wasn’t deemed unsafe until 1958 when the foredeck was officially closed. The following year, the 76-foot masts were removed as they too were deemed to be rotten and hazardous. Several storms have continued to damage the old ship over the years, including the most recent damage occurring in January 2017, when a storm managed to break off a section of the ship’s stern about 50 feet long from the main hull and flipped on its side. The S.S. Palo Alto went from an oil tanker, to an entertainment ship, to a fishing pier, and will now live out the rest of her days as an artificial reef and a symbol of Aptos History.

Cover & T-Shirt Art is an outstanding place to live, play, and work. Who wouldn’t want to enjoy life at the beach while refining their art. Julie Henry, known as Jules to her friends, made the decision to start designing not only for local businesses, but to create art that reflects the unique community, geography and culture of Santa Cruz. Professionally Jules is the principal designer and co-founder of nomBat Branding and Graphic Design. Perhaps Julie’s most public work however has been the Victorian design work for LocalSantaCruz.com; a series of designs showcasing the unique elements and history of many of Santa Cruz County’s neighborhoods, parks and surf spots.
