Alternate Routes TO THE FAIR
Freedom Boulevard to Corralitos Road. Right on Varni to Pioneer Road to Green Valley Road, left on Casserly and right on Highway 152.
Normally Airport Boulevard and Highway 152 handle the cars and farm trucks pretty well. But when your favorite travel app warns of heavy traffic on the most popular routes to the Fairgrounds you’ll be glad you grabbed the attached map. Use it to find a road less traveled. It isn’t necessarily shorter in distance but may be quicker in time. At the very least following roads with names like Casserly and Carlton will certainly take you through some beautiful country. Even though you might have to share the road with a large number of your friends and neighbors, the 2021 Santa Cruz County Fair is worth the trip. And this year you can navigate the back roads like a local with or without that very smart phone.

Managers Message 2021 Dear Friends and Supporters: This fall I will be celebrating my ten year anniversary as Manager of the Santa Cruz County Fair. When I and a large group of incredibly dedicated team of volunteers offered to restructure and reorganize one of the most important institutions in Santa Cruz County, we all knew that we would have plenty of work in front of us. But nobody ever dreamed of how tough this past year and a half would be. Over the past ten years many people have worked tirelessly to strengthen the Fairgrounds infrastructure and facilities to improve daily operations and prepare for potential disasters. During 2020 we were afforded maximum opportunities to serve our community with disaster relief efforts. Working with awesome County of Santa Cruz staff members this Fairgrounds served the community in multiple award-winning ways that everyone should be exceptionally proud of. With years of dedicated service experience our Fairgrounds Foundation and Ag History Project organizations continue to improve facilities and services to make this the best small community Fairgrounds in the west. Last year, for the first time since the early 1940’s (during World War II), our annual Fair was cancelled like so many other events. Needless to say we are extremely excited as we prepare for our 2021 Fair comeback year. We plan to have almost all of our traditional activities including entries, exhibits, motorsports, animals of many kinds and types, entertainment, fair food & beverages, carnival, circus, shows, etc. Please come out and enjoy the return of your annual COUNTY FAIR. Thanks Dave Kegebein Fair Manager

Gary Blackburn Santa Cruz, California based celebrated singer songwriter, Gary Blackburn, brings together his smooth vocals, and stylized guitar picking to his original compositions in the Country, Rock, Folk, Blues genres. Blending old school with contemporary, Gary will weave a memorable musical performance of songs that tell stories of love, forgiveness, and the paths that we choose. Gary performs his original compositions that include songs off his CD,” Streak of Gray”, some are currently aired on Santa Cruz County radio stations,
KPIG 107.5 FM, and KBCZ 89.3 FM. With a well-rounded repertoire, Gary will show both his versatile soft folk blues side along with his high energy rock side, mixing in some cool cover songs that will make you get up, and dance! Gary is the front man of the Gary Blackburn Band on vocals, and guitar, featuring Kevin Taylor on keyboards, Eric Bumgarner on lead guitar, Tom Levenhagen on bass, and Tom Duncan on drums. You will no doubt experience an enjoyable time listening to Gary’s, “Heartfelt Americana with an Edge”. http://www.garyblackburnmusic.com

Yesterday’s Farm
hen you attend the Fair this year and come to Yesterdays Farm you will be observing activities that were done on a farm 100 years ago or more. From 2 PM to 4 PM each day you will see different horse demonstrations such as baling hay with a single horse operating the baler and cultivating corn with just a horse and a one row cultivator. Visitors will also get the chance to drive a team of horses. These demonstrations are designed to show what the Agricultural History Project would like to do when the Living History Farm is built. Plans have already been designed and hopefully construction will start soon. When you enter Yesterdays Farm site you will be able to sit on
the porch and visit with one of our talented docents and reminisce. We will also have exhibits showcasing Tractors, Horse Drawn Carriages, Antique Engines by the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association, Engines restored by Agricultural History Project Volunteers. The Spinners and Weavers will be doing demonstrations on the stage by the new Chicken exhibit. The Agricultural History Project is a work in progress, and we are constantly looking at ways to preserve the past and learn about what is going into the production of food for our dinner table. Stop by and visit Yesterday’s Farm at the Agriculture History Project and say hello.

Charro Show 4:00pm | Sunday, September 19, 2021 Main Horseshow Arena
On Sunday afternoon, September 19, the main Horse Show Arena at the Fairgrounds transforms itself from a competitive horsemanship arena into a performance venue. The traditional Charro show returns with a start time of 4 PM Charreria is the art and style of Mexican horsemanship plus a good dose of performance art, roping, and daring stunts, all to the driving beat of a live Banda. The sport has been described as “living history,” or as an art form drawn from the demands of a working life with both men and women performing. This is a show with something for all cultures. This year the Fair is pleased to host the return of Salinas Valley Charros and Los Reyes de la Banda.

Twinkle Time
2021
ocking out with orange pigtails, “Twinkle Time” the kids pop-rock stage show returns to the 2021 Santa Cruz County Fair. Starring Twinkle, the bilingual pop artist returns with her two best friends; Happy, a clumsy and shy bookworm that loves science and Lil Hoopz, who is blissfully aloof and loves anything sports or competitive. The trip performs wearing wacky colored clothing and puts on a show that will get kids and parents jumping to their feet to dance and sing along. “Twinkle Time is a high energy educational and bilingual pop concert for kids,” Twinkle explains, “Parents love it too, because the music is so fun and catchy, people love to get up and dance along!”

What makes this pop group stand out is the importance of learning through music and fun. “All the songs are poprock related, but all about teaching a positive educational message,” Twinkle said. She added, “We sprinkle a few bilingual phrases, English and Spanish throughout the songs. The kids are having fun but also learning a cool message.” Younger children will practice coordination through Twinkle’s signature dance moves as they ‘Move and Groove Twinkle Time Style.” Twinkle Time will perform three shows daily on the Tank House Stage.

Quilts of Valor
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY FAIR YOUTH DEPARTMENT During the presentation ceremony a letter is read and those in attendance get to hear about the recipient’s service to our country. The quilt is then opened facing the veteran so they see if first before being shown to the crowd. It is then given to the veteran by wrapping it around him. The local Quilts of Valor group hopes to sew and wrap county veterans for many years to come. Turnquist encourages those interested in learning more to go to the Quilts of Valor website qovf.org . “But be careful, you might want to come sew quilts with us” she laughs. Fair Youth Department head Robin Turnquist was inspired last fall. As a member of the Aptos Grange #800 she attended the national Grange Convention and was in the audience when the Quilts of Valor organization spoke to those gathered. “It was so moving for me that I brought their story back to my local Grange” explained Turnquist.
The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.
Several members of the group jumped on board with the Aptos Grange agreeing to serve as sponsor. An invitation to county 4-H clubs went out as well as to anyone in the community interested in joining them for fellowship, sewing and citizenship.
Camel Rides
Fair visitors usually walk over to the livestock area expecting to see pigs, cattle, sheep, goats and other familiar fair animals. And perhaps to enjoy a guilty pleasure, a milkshake at the clover deli. But camels? Returning to the Santa Cruz County Fair, visitors will have the chance to ride a camel, which isn’t exactly something you get to do often if ever at all! The camel ride track will be located between the Pig Races and the Livestock Show Arena, two or three people can ride one of the camels at a time, depending on the amount of spaces available in the saddle. Rider weight isn’t really a factor for these large animals as they can carry over half of their own weight.
The rides will be atop Dromedary camels, meaning that they have only one hump. Two humped camels are known as Bactrians. The camels you will ride

were obtained from domestic breeders in the United States, as camels are no longer allowed to be imported into the U.S. These camels are taken care of to the highest of ethical standards and are treated with much love. The camels enjoy a diet similar to what many horses eat; grass, hay, and grain. All the camels are extremely docile and enjoy being around people. Contrary to what many people think, the humps of the camels are not filled with water. Instead, the humps are filled with dense fat. This fat can hold water for up to three weeks, which allows camels to survive for long periods of time without water in the desert. In addition, camels do no spit or bite like many people believe… llamas do that. The opportunity to ride camels is one more reason why the Fair is unique and has something fun for the entire family.

Diaper Derby If it’s been some time since you have had a little one in the house or that is something you have yet to experience, you might want to plan on being in Paddy Smith Park on Saturday, September 18, during the Fair. The Diaper Derby/Toddler Contest kicks off, or rather crawls off, starting at 1 PM. These slow motion races for the prize begin orderly enough but as soon as the whistle blows an entertaining chaos breaks out. The kids are cute and their parents are entertaining. Some of the competitors head straight for the finish line, at least in the beginning, but most wander off when they spot something far more interesting than dad jiggling the car keys on the other side of the mat. The derby has its roots in the celebrations held in pioneer communities and was a part of the Santa Cruz Fair in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Fair Board of Director Loretta Estrada brought the event back to the Fair and it grows in popularity each year. While the Kentucky Derby calls itself the fastest two minutes in sport, the Fair Diaper Derby is the slowest two minutes. But way more fun!

Anisa Valasco Receives 2021 Heritage Hog Scholarship From that little girl who used to peek through the fence out in the Livestock Barns to recipient of the 2021 Heritage Hog Scholarship, it has been a journey of discovery for Anisa Valasco. The very recent graduate of Watsonville High School is on her way to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to major in Animal Science and Pre Vet Medicine. “Growing up I was not aware that there was such a thing as FFA or 4-H or even Independent Showing. I got my first animal in my sophomore year and I was hooked” remembered Valasco, who then had to figure out how to pay for it all. “I sold my old clothing, started a jewelry making business, did countless car washes, did yard work, and babysat to pay for my animals and their feed” added Valasco. The Heritage Hog Scholarship Program is a fundraiser dedicated to Fairgrounds improvements while also providing a scholarship for a Junior Livestock exhibitor to further their education. Each year the Fairgrounds Foundation selects a local 4-H, FFA or independent student with experience raising livestock for the Fair who is pursuing a higher education to raise a hog provided by the Foundation. The hog will be exhibited at the Fair and sold at the end of the Junior Livestock Auction. The proceeds from the hog sale, along with other donations will be used by the Fairgrounds Foundation to fund the scholarship and the Fairground improvements. As a result of her efforts Valasco will be awarded $2,000 to use towards her educational expenses. The Heritage Hog Scholarship is great way to encourage current youth involvement in the Fair Livestock activities and foster future educational endeavors for the hard working junior exhibitors.

White Album
2021
ENSEMBLE COMES TO THE SANTA CRUZ COUNTY FAIR! It began in 2003 as a dream, to put together a crack team of top local musicians to perform the Beatles’ “White Album”, live, in 2003 in a theater setting with lights, dance and a full-screen video presentation. After selling out both debut shows and creating a considerable buzz around town, the word of mouth from neighbors, friends and co-workers about the quality and vibe of the performance persuaded the group to keep on doing more concerts. After numerous sold out “White Album Live” concerts, the group added the other albums that were too difficult for the Beatles to play live, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Peppers , Magical Mystery Tour, Let it Be, and Abbey Road. Eighteen years later the group continues to pack the theaters, and continues to refine the “Classics of our Time”. This puts the band in the enviable position of being able to create sets of music drawing on the most popular group of all time, whose best work was never performed live, as they quit touring in 1966!
The White Album Ensemble has a core of longtime friends who’ve played together for decades in different configurations, former members of such popular groups as the Doobie Brothers, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Moby Grape, Snail, the Little River Band, The Tubes, and many more. The essence of the WAE is a live performance of Beatles albums which they themselves never performed “live”- with very high standards; music that many agree is timeless — the “classics” of our time. There is no attempt to be a “look alike” band; this is more like a symphony performing Bach or Mozart, only using voices, guitars, drums, or whatever it takes. No fake accents or costumes. Fair showtime is 7:30 PM, September 18, 2021, on the Amphitheater Stage.

Los Moralitos Circus The Los Moralitos Circus is coming to the Fair, not only is it their first time performing at the Santa Cruz County Fair, but it’s their first time performing their show in California! They are bringing family fun and excitement with a high-energy performance of tumbling, acrobats, unicycles, aerialists and more. Los Moralitos is a 4th generation of circus performers, who take great pride in putting together a first class professional performance for all ages. You can expect to see their 30foot tall ‘wheel of death’ in which Jonathan performs great stunts both inside and outside of the wheel, even walking the wheel blindfolded. Their 5th generation performer, the Vazquez’s 7 year old daughter, will perform an act called contortions, where she bends her body like a pretzel. The show will also feature the ‘Globe of Death’ where motorcycle riders will ride around in 360-degree circles. And Chuy the Clown will make an appearance, leaving your stomach sore from laughing so much! Los Moralitos owner Jonathan Vazquez says, “We are excited to be expanding out to your community and will hopefully make this a Fair we perform at for many years to come.”

All-Alaskan Racing Pigs
The Racing Pigs Return To The Beautiful Lawn Near The Livestock Area, Entertaining Cheering Crowds At The Santa Cruz County Fair. These prestigious porkers are returning to the Fair for three appearances daily! Although the Alaska State Fair has been their home for 32 years, they have a soft spot for Santa Cruz County, according to manager Bart Noll. “We first played here thirty one years ago. It was a full house for our first show and hasn’t stopped since” he says, adding “We’re humbled by the overflow crowds and hope you’re having as much fun as we are.” The famous All-Alaskan Racing Pigs are a team of the fastest and funniest athletes to serve up entertainment anywhere! Two of the main ingredients for the All-Alaskan Racing Pig shows are comedy and competition. These perky pigs are natural hams, so to speak, and they’ve brought home the bacon at shows all over the western U.S. and Alaska. Another important ingredient of the race is cookies, which is the treat that the pigs are racing to win. Each race only lasts about six seconds (these pigs are fast!) and each 20-minute show features four races. Bart Noll admits that his eight pigs are a little spoiled. They live in an air-conditioned trailer, eat well and get a fresh cedar or pine bedding change twice daily. “They love what they do,” Noll says,
“and they like people and are fun to work with.” After the show stick around for an opportunity to meet one of these cute little porkers, they love to pose for pictures! Watch to see which one of the All-Alaskan Racing Pigs tries to hog the limelight at races held every day in their Fair home on the Livestock Lawn. Check the online schedule for daily race times!

It all happens on the Amphitheater Lawn and begins at 12:30 to the music of the South Bay Swing Band followed at 1 PM with the seniors-only Ice Cream Social and special senior contests. “We look for someone with the most birthdays or who traveled the furthest to come to the Fair, things like that” explained organizer Loretta Estrada. The South Bay Swing Band provides a nice backdrop with the music of their lives and it all makes for quite a convivial gathering. Why, even dancing has been known to break out when the band kicks it up a notch. To recap the festivities – the downbeat for the South Bay Swing Band’s first set is at 12:30 and they’ll start scooping ice cream at 1 PM with the senior contest starting shortly thereafter.
