Hiram Scott is a great story in itself. Born in Maine, sailed to California at 17 years of age. He jumped ship in Monterey in 1839, came to Santa Cruz, and starts building schooners. News of Gold Rush fever enveloped him and he dropped everything. Then he was off to the Gold Fields and there he strikes some gold. He then comes back to buy the land that was called “Rancho San Augustine”. He and Mountain Charley established one of the first toll roads over the Santa Cruz Mountains. But he never stopped having wanderlust, so he sold his Scotts Valley ranch to his Father and went on many more adventures. Hiram Scott built the Greek revival style Scott House in 1853. Situated behind City Hall, it is a Santa Cruz County Historical Trust Landmark, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The area was the site of Santa’s Village, a Christmas-themed amusement park which opened on May 30, 1957. There was a petting zoo, a bobsled ride, a whirling Christmas tree ride, and a train ride, as well as a Fairy Tale Land. The park was sold in 1966 but continued to be operated under lease by the Santa’s Village Corporation. Scotts Valley’s most famous resident was film director Alfred Hitchcock, who lived in a mountaintop estate above the Vine Hill area from 1940 to 1972.

Scotts Valley home through the 70’s and 80’s! Scotts Valley had it’s own Drag-strip. After WW2 many of the young veterans came back to Santa Cruz with speed in their veins. They had been flying fighter planes, and driving or maintaining all kinds of military vehicles. The Highway Patrol was aware that many of the guy’s needed an outlet for their racing, and so they sanctioned Sunday Morning drags at Skypark Airport. Scotts Valley is known to be home of The Barn. The Barn, a coffee house with a large area for concerts. In the ‘60s Janis Joplin, Grateful Dead performed in the Barn. Merry Pranksters and Ken Kesey used to show up there, as described in detail in the last chapter of Tom Wolfe’s book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.

Jenny Haruyama is the City Manager for the City of Scotts Valley and oversees a $16 million annual operating budget while managing the day to day operations of the City. She currently serves as a Board Member for the Santa Cruz Public Libraries Joint Powers Authority, of which Scotts Valley is a member. Her top priority is encouraging business attraction, retention, and expansion, and facilitating the development of the Town Center Specific Plan. Prior to Scotts Valley, Jenny served as the Assistant City Manager for the City of Livermore and served as the Chief Operating Officer, providing strategic policy and budget guidance on a variety of citywide initiatives. During her tenure, she managed the City’s communication and legislative strategy to leverage local and regional support for the TriValley Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) to Livermore/ Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) extension project. Jenny has over twenty years of local government experience. Prior to working for the City of Livermore, Jenny worked for the City of Tracy as the Administrative Services Director, providing leadership in the areas of Finance, Human Resources and Information Technology. Jenny also worked for the Town of Los Gatos, serving in a variety of senior management positions including Assistant Director of Budget and Finance, Budget Manager, and Assistant to the Town Manager. Jenny currently serves as a member of the League of California Cities Police Committee on Governance, Transparency, and Labor. Jenny previously served on the League of California City Manager Department OPEB Task Force and as President of Municipal Management Association of Northern California (MMANC). Jenny has been recognized for her local government service, and received the Municipal Management Association of Northern California (MMANC) Wes McClure Outstanding Assistant Award, MMANC Rising Star Award, and more recently, the YMCA Silicon Valley Tribute to Women in Executive Leadership Award.

Jenny holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from San Jose State University and a Master of Public Administration from California State University Hayward.

Chief Steve Walpole has been a resident of Scotts Valley his entire life. His law enforcement career began over twenty years ago, but it wasn’t until 2014 that started work here at the Scotts Valley Police Department. He was with the department for three years before being appointed the Interim Chief of Police at the beginning of 2017. When he is away from work Chief Walpole enjoys spending time with his wife and two teenage sons.

Chief Kovacs has over 36 years in the fire service, starting in 1981 with the Ebbetts Pass Fire District, where he stayed for 31 years. He moved to Murphys in 1990 and joined the Murphys Fire Protection District as a volunteer. In February 2006, he was promoted to Fire Chief where he served for 12 years for a total of 27 years with the Murphys Fire Protection District. In August 2017, he was hired as the Fire Chief for the Scotts Valley Fire Protection District. He has a diverse background in structural and wildland firefighting as well as fire district leadership. Chief Kovacs serves on many Boards and Committees dealing with fire and emergency preparedness, including Fire District’s Association of California and the FDAC Employee Benefit Authority JPA, FIRESCOPE, State Board of Fire Services, California Fire Assistance Agreement Committee and is the Past President of the Fire District’s Association of California. He is also a member of the California Fire Chief’s Association, International Association of Fire Chiefs, and the Volunteer and Combination Officer’s Section.

The San Lorenzo Valley (SLV) is a mountainous river valley in the Santa Cruz Mountains in Santa Cruz County, California. The region grew around logging, mining, and railroad industries in the early 1900s. These industries were instrumental in the rebuilding of the city of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. Also around this same time, tourism began to boom thanks to large land grants and designations dedicated to conservation. SLV boundaries stretch from Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park in the south near the town of Felton to communities north of Boulder Creek near Big Basin and Castle Rock State Parks. It is bordered on the west by Bonny Doon Mountain

and to the east by Scotts Valley. Currently home to 37,000 residents, the entire valley comprises the San Lorenzo River watershed. Towns along the river include Felton, Ben Lomond, Brookdale, and Boulder Creek. Communities upslope from the river include Mount Hermon, Lompico, Zayante, and Bonny Doon.

Bruce McPherson

was elected to the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors in November 2012 and was re-elected in 2016. He represents the Fifth District, which includes the San Lorenzo Valley communities of Felton, Ben Lomond, Brookdale, Boulder Creek, Lompico, Zayante, Las Cumbres, Mount Hermon, most of Scotts Valley, a small part of Santa Cruz, and Paradise Park. Bruce has a long and distinguished record of serving Santa Cruz County. A fourth-generation Santa Cruz County native, Bruce’s career began as a reporter at his family newspaper, the Sentinel, later rising to Editor. He served two terms in the California State Assembly (1993-96) and two terms in the California State Senate (1996-2004). Following the resignation of California’s Secretary of State in early 2005, Bruce was confirmed unanimously in both the Assembly and Senate to be Secretary of State. He was recognized as Legislator of the Year by numerous organizations and foundations. Throughout the years, Bruce has worked closely with Second Harvest Food Bank, the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County, the Cabrillo College 50th Anniversary Scholarship Committee, United Way, the Tannery Arts Center, Ecology Action, the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Exploration Center, American Red Cross, and many other non-profit agencies. He has been honored for his dedication and commitment to improving education, supporting public safety, fighting for environmental protection, and assisting small businesses. As a fourth generation Santa Cruz County native, I (and my family predecessors) have been blessed to enjoy the people and natural resource beauty of the San Lorenzo Valley and the rural-like quaintness of the now 50-year-old city of Scotts Valley. SLV is home to one of the most significant stands of redwood trees on earth, including some 2,000plus years old and the state’s oldest state park - Big Basin - which my great-grandfather Duncan McPherson helped establish in 1902. Many rivers run through the Valley and trails abound for everyone to enjoy, from hiker and biker to horse rider. Like to eat? Restaurants which will satisfy every taste are here for you to enjoy in some truly magnificent settings. Scotts Valley provides an abundance of services to families at home, as well as ample accommodations for the visitor who is within a 10-minute drive to the beautiful Monterey Bay or redwood parks to the north.
