Ancient history of Scotts Valley Approximately ten thousand years ago there was a lake in the lowest elevation of Scotts Valley, and Paleo Indians lived near its shores. The lake receded to form a peat bog. Later, around 2000 BC, Ohlone people occupied areas along the remaining creeks, spring and seep areas, along permanent and seasonal drainages, and on flat ridges and terraces.

The California Era Scotts Valley was named after Hiram Daniel Scott, who purchased Rancho San Agustin, including the valley, in 1850 from Joseph Ladd Majors. Before Majors, the property was owned by Jose Bolcoff. Bolcoff was the original settler and first European to claim title and live in what was to be Scotts Valley. Hiram Scott built the Greek revival style Scott House in 1853. Situated behind City Hall, it is on the National Register of Historic Places. The house originally stood on Scotts Valley Drive, near where a Bank of America branch is now located. It is he and his family whom the City is named for. 1900’s Era of Growth Beginning in the 1930s, peat moss was removed from Scotts Valley and taken to San Francisco to supply soil for difficult indoor plants such as gardenias. When the peat ran out, sand and gravel were quarried and sold. Camp Evers store and auto camping court was built in the 1920s and served as the community hub throughout the 1930s to 70s, when other local growth overcame it. Scotts Valley officially became a City in 1966. The Beverly Gardens were established in the 1930s and featured a collection of exotic birds and animals, a restaurant, and cabins. Axel Erlandson opened The Tree Circus in 1947, featuring trees grafted and trained in strange and unusual shapes. Bright life size painted dinosaurs

moved to Gilroy Gardens. Santa’s Village, one of three locations in America’s first theme park chain, was established in 1956. It was the most popular of the many attractions, attracting millions of visitors to Scotts Valley for over twenty years, and it was the last of Scotts Valley’s theme parks to close its doors in 1979. Scotts Valley is known to be home of The Barn, a coffee house with a large area for concerts. In the 60s Janis Joplin, Grateful Dead, and Jimi Hendrix performed in the Barn. Merry Pranksters and Ken Kesey used to show up there, as described in detail in the last chapter of Tom Wolfe’s book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. Alfred Hitchcock made his home of 40 years in the hills above Scotts Valley. From this location he made many Northern California movies and entertained Hollywood celebrities as well as Royal families Today In 2017 the 1440 Multiversity opened its doors after a multimillion-dollar complete renovation of the old Bethany College campus. 1440 is a health and wellness retreat and education center run by the 1440 Foundation, which was started by Scott Kriens and his wife.

Scotts Valley is governed by a five-member City Council, which elects a Mayor annually. The City Council also appoints a City Manager, who supervises the various department heads and oversees the preparation and admiration of the city budget. The city government administers the Department of Community Development, Police Services, Public Works, Parks and Recreation and Financial Services.

SCOTTS VALLEY CITY COUNCIL: Tina Friend is a city management and public policy professional with special expertise in public management, policy analysis, communications and public law. Tina is proud to be the City Manager of Scotts Valley, where she manages a total $20 million budget and a broad array of community services. Her current priorities include ensuring the City’s fiscal sustainability, supporting strong economic development and delivering major capital projects such as renovations to the Scotts Valley Branch Library. Tina serves on the Library Joint Powers Authority Board, Monterey Bay Community Power Operations Board and Visit Santa Cruz County Board to help advance Scotts Valley’s interests. Prior to Scotts Valley, Tina was with the City of Santa Cruz for 14 years. For the last 9 years, she held the position of Assistant City Manager where she oversaw six major departments and worked on significant community issues such as housing, homelessness, public safety, community engagement and finance. Tina holds a Juris Doctor degree from Santa Clara University School of Law and a Master of Public Policy degree with a concentration in Regulatory and Environmental Policy from Georgetown University. Her undergraduate degree is a B.S. magna cum laude from the University of Idaho. She has been active locally including graduating from Leadership Santa Cruz County and serving on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Santa Cruz County, Santa Cruz Area Chamber of Commerce, Homeless Action Partnership, Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter, and the Santa Cruz County Women’s Commission.

Chief Steve Walpole

has been a resident of Scotts Valley his entire life. His law enforcement career began over twenty years ago, but it wasn’t until 2014 that started work here at the Scotts Valley Police Department. He was with the department for three years before being appointed the Interim Chief of Police at the beginning of 2017. When he is away from work Chief Walpole enjoys spending time with his wife and two teenage sons.

Chief Kovacs has over 36 years in the fire service, starting in 1981 with the Ebbetts Pass Fire District, where he stayed for 31 years. He moved to Murphys in 1990 and joined the Murphys Fire Protection District as a volunteer. In February 2006, he was promoted to Fire Chief where he served for 12 years for a total of 27 years with the Murphys Fire Protection District. In August 2017, he was hired as the Fire Chief for the Scotts Valley Fire Protection District. He has a diverse background in structural and wildland firefighting as well as fire district leadership. Chief Kovacs serves on many Boards and Committees dealing with fire and emergency preparedness, including Fire District’s Association of California and the FDAC Employee Benefit Authority JPA, FIRESCOPE, State Board of Fire Services, California Fire Assistance Agreement Committee and is the Past President of the Fire District’s Association of California. He is also a member of the California Fire Chief’s Association, International Association of Fire Chiefs, and the Volunteer and Combination Officer’s Section.

LOCATION

Scotts Valley is a city in Santa Cruz County, California, between San Jose and Monterey, a picturesque region known for its ancient redwood forests and rugged coastline. Although it is a small city, Scotts Valley offers a variety of activities and attractions for visitors of all ages that can keep you occupied for a leisurely weekend. Many natural attractions also are found within a short drive of the city.

Scotts Valley the Gateway to the Santa Cruz Mountains. Located amidst the area’s dramatic redwood forests in the western region of the Santa Cruz Mountains, is a small suburban community with a proud link to the past. The Glenwood Open Space Preserve East Trails is now open for mountain biking & walking trails. The last phase of construction is planned for Fall 2020. Scotts Valley is surrounded by coastal redwoods, the world’s tallest trees. To see these magnificent forests up close and explore a landscape unique to the California coast, head out of Scotts Valley to nearby Big Basin Redwoods State Park or Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. Both parks feature hiking trails, gentle walking paths, picnic areas and riding trails. Roaring Camp Railroads in Felton also showcases the towering redwoods of the region, offering steam train rides on two historic railroads. Make Scotts Valley your basecamp as you explore the 14 California State Parks in Santa Cruz County. An array of outdoor

options at the city’s largest park, Skypark that boasts 4 tennis courts, 2 Basketball courts, Bocce Ball Court, an enormous playground, BBQ pits, shaded picnic tables and a gazebo, paved walking and bike trail lined with California native plants. Skateboarders will delight at the Tim Brauch Memorial Skatepark, a 22,000 square foot concrete playground, Bike enthusiasts can enjoy the Bike Pump Track, Traveling with Fido? The Dog Park includes a special area for both large and small dogs. During the summer months there are FREE concerts, Music at Skypark - on the last Sunday of July, August, & September. The Scotts Valley Farmer’s Market is April through October. Shoppers will appreciate the many boutique gift stores, and vintage treasures. The new restaurant Canton opened its second location near the 10 screen Cinelux Scotts Valley Cafe & Lounge that features D-box motion seats, reclining chairs, and a wine & beer bar with cafe.

Boulder Creek Golf Club offers a challenging 18-hole par 67/65 Executive Golf Course surrounded by the majestic redwood trees. The new full 27 hole Redwood Run Disc Golf Course is now Open! A full service resort. Overnight condominium lodging with stay & play packages and vacation rental packages are ideal for your next retreat, golf tournament or wedding. Pasatiempo Golf Course is a semi-private golf club. Designed by world-renowned golf architect Alister MacKenzie who also designed Augusta National and Cypress Point, Pasatiempo was his favorite layout and where he made his home, which borders the sixth fairway. Delaveaga Golf, a public course, combines striking natural beauty with a challenging and thoughtful course design featuring tree-lined fairways, deep canyons, and the infamous 10th hole. There is also a twostory lighted driving range.

The headwaters of the San Lorenzo River are just 15 miles from the city of San Jose and just 15 miles from the city of Santa Cruz, both thriving towns during the Mission period. Even so, a steep canyon, an almost impenetrable forest, and formidable Grizzly bears ensured that these headwaters remained largely unexploited by Westerners until the 1880s. Rich in natural resources such as vast forests of redwood lumber, tan oaks, and lime deposits, once discovered, this virgin landscape was pillaged and plundered. A few enlightened individuals understood that the clear cutting techniques of the lumber companies would soon result in the total loss of this natural wonder. Their endeavors resulted in the founding of California’s first Redwood State Park at Big Basin, saving this

precious resource for future generations. Today the San Lorenzo Valley (SLV) is home to 24,006 residents in the towns along the river of Felton, Ben Lomond, Brookdale, and Boulder Creek, Communities upslope from the river include Mount Hermon, Lompico, Zayante, and Bonny Doon. The region is known for its abundance of state, county, and local parks, redwood trees, and sensitive species and habitats. Bruce McPherson

was elected to the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors in November 2012 and was re-elected in 2016. He represents the Fifth District, which includes the San Lorenzo Valley communities of Felton, Ben Lomond, Brookdale, Boulder Creek, Lompico, Zayante, Las Cumbres, Mount Hermon, most of Scotts Valley, a small part of Santa Cruz, and Paradise Park. Bruce has a long and distinguished record of serving Santa Cruz County. A fourth-generation Santa Cruz County native, Bruce’s career began as a reporter at his family newspaper, the Sentinel, later rising to Editor. He served two terms in the California State Assembly (1993-96) and two terms in the California State Senate (1996-2004). Following the resignation of California’s Secretary of State in early 2005, Bruce was confirmed unanimously in both the Assembly and Senate to be Secretary of State. He was recognized as Legislator of the Year by numerous organizations and foundations. Throughout the years, Bruce has worked closely with Second Harvest Food Bank, the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County, the Cabrillo College 50th Anniversary Scholarship Committee, United Way, the Tannery Arts Center, Ecology Action, the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Exploration Center, American Red Cross, and many other non-profit agencies. He has been honored for his dedication and commitment to improving education, supporting public safety, fighting for environmental protection, and assisting small businesses. As a fourth generation Santa Cruz County native, I (and my family predecessors) have been blessed to enjoy the people and natural resource beauty of the San Lorenzo Valley and the rural-like quaintness of the now 50-year-old city of Scotts Valley. SLV is home to one of the most significant stands of redwood trees on earth, including some 2,000plus years old and the state’s oldest state park - Big Basin - which my great-grandfather Duncan McPherson helped establish in 1902. Many rivers run through the Valley and trails abound for everyone to enjoy, from hiker and biker to horse rider. Like to eat? Restaurants which will satisfy every taste are here for you to enjoy in some truly magnificent settings. Scotts Valley provides an abundance of services to families at home, as well as ample accommodations for the visitor who is within a 10-minute drive to the beautiful Monterey Bay or redwood parks to the north. There are tons of great restaurants throughout the San Lorenzo Valley. Stop by Boulder Creek’s historic Scopazzi’s Restaurant for their incredible steak and seafood dinners. Don’t forget about their famous flaming desserts! There are some great quick bites, such as BBQ tritip sandwiches from the Redwood Keg. For a romantic Italian dinner under the redwoods, check out Casa Nostra. For a full hot breakfast, try Cafe Bella in charming downtown Boulder Creek or Spanky’s in Ben Lomond. If you want to see live music, make sure to check out Joe’s Bar for local bands, or the new Felton Music Hall for a diverse lineup of musical talent!

There are many places to rest your head after hiking in the redwoods. Check out the freshly renovated historic Brookdale Lodge. If something very unique and complete with a minifarm, check out the Hartman House in Boulder Creek. There are many retreat centers as well throughout the valley, including Camp Campbell YMCA, Camp Krem and the Mount Hermon Conference Center. If you have a small group and need a condo, check out Boulder Creek Golf and Country Club. If you prefer to sleep under the starts, camp at Big Basin State Park or Henry Cowell State Park.

SHOP LOCAL The San Lorenzo Valley is a destination for fantastic and rare finds. The area is known for their artists and their antique shops. Make sure you check out Swag, in Boulder Creek, for vintage stereo consoles and mid-century modern home accessories. Boulder Creek Art and Antiques, also called Mac’s, is the largest antique shop in the valley. There are plenty of talented artists featured at Air and Fire and The Hive, both Boulder Creek artist galleries featuring tons of local artists. Lastly, check out all the trendy shops in downtown Felton, such has Simpatico. If you’re here to camp, stop at Scarborough for all your camping/survival items, as well as houseware and garden items. Rare herbs and locally made tea blends can be found at Aum Herbs Apothecary in Boulder Creek. Lastly, take home some books on local history which can be found at the San Lorenzo Valley Museum.

WINERIES & CRAFT BREWERS Make sure you check out the Cremer House in Felton which features hand crafted cocktails and local wines and brews. Also in Felton, check out Hallcrest Vineyards. They have a tasting room and outdoor seating with an incredible view. If you want to check out a few local brews on one stop, check out Boulder Creek Pizza & Pub, who has a handful of local beers from local breweries on draft (and great pizza of course). If a gorgeous vineyard estate is what you’re after, check out Byington Vineyards, just outside of Boulder Creek.

The purpose of the BCBA is to maintain a healthy economic and cultural environment in this small mountain town by promoting a cohesive bond between the various organizations representing the valley population and business; with a positive sense of community while respecting and embracing the diversity of each individual. The BCBA is an over 50-year-old non-profit, 100% volunteer-run organization with currently over 100 members. The Association conducts dozens of business and community events. After years of fundraising and planning, in 2016, the BCBA completed the Board’s dream of outlining the downtown buildings with lights. BCBA represents business interests in in the County of Santa Cruz economic development strategy, the Alcohol Beverage Join the Boulder Creek Business Association We help to unite local businesses for purposes of advertising and promotion, and Business to Business opportunities.
