Theater Group Gets City Go-Ahead T he Scotts Valley City Council has unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding with Scotts Valley Community Theater Guild (SVCTG).

The guild now has six months to complete and its plans for marketing, operations, facilities and funding. The biggest hurdle for the guild is raising the $2.5 million in funds to turn 9,000 square feet of what was a skating rink into a performing arts center.

The usable part of the facility is “just four walls and a ceiling” according to guild Vice President Carolyn Dugger.

The building needs the removal of all the internal structures left over from its previous life as a skating rink such as the snack bar.

“One of the most expensive parts of the project” said Dugger, “Will be digging for a real orchestra pit.”

Then there are all the elements that

make up a modern performing arts center: storage for scenery, dressing rooms, the lights, the sound systems the hydraulics, the control booth, the seats, and the other amenities for the audience and the performers.

These facilities plus some startup costs amount to an estimated $2.5 Million to be raised by the Scotts Valley Community Theater Guild in order to get the go-ahead from the city as the property is cityowned and the City of Scotts Valley will be the landlord.

According to the SVCTG, “The City of Scotts Valley (Scotts Valley) currently has many theater and performing groups, engaged in all manner of performance activities, from student piano and dance recitals to community concerts, lectures and even complete musicals. Over the past 20 years, Scotts Valley community groups have enjoyed the hospitality of Bethany University, performing in a venue known as the BUC Theater (Bethany University Community

Theater).

Bethany leaders shared the desire for local

performing arts space and have hosted hundreds of productions with dozens of customers (Scotts Valley Performing Arts, School, Georgiana Bruce Kirby, Scotts Valley High School, Christian Youth Theater, Kids On Broadway, to name just a few). Since Bethany University recently ceased operations, all the customers associated with the BUC Theater have been left homeless.

“The primary customers of the Guild at the PAC (Performing Arts Center) groups (grade school, middle school and high school) drama, musical, dance per-

Trish Melehan of the Scotts Valley Performing Arts said that there are many in the community who are in support of a Performing Arts Center. “It is desperately needed to promote the performing arts and to provide the many talented people in our community a place to perform. Also it is in a perfect location next to the planned Town Center.”

The abbreviated ballot text follows: “To replace the 70-year old Middle School with a new school, with up-todate computer/learning technology, science labs, code-compliant/energyefficient electrical, plumbing, heating/ cooling systems; upgrade, construct, acquire classrooms, schools, facilities, sites/equipment that meet accessibility requirements; make needed seismic repairs at elementary schools, and qualify for State matching funds, shall Scotts Valley Unified School District issue $35,000,000 in bonds, at legal rates, with independent oversight, no funds for administrators, all funds staying local?”

The decision to pursue the bond measure is the result of more than two and student input, community meetings, and reports to the public at regular Board meetings. A survey of registered voters conducted earlier this month indicated 72 percent voter support for a bond measure.

The contest is open to U.S. residents February 19, 2014. Entrants need not reside in California.

Happy Anniversary to Senior Network Services T his year marks the 40 th anniversary of Senior Network Services. It was in August of 1974 that the doors were opened on the new senior community resource center for senior citizens who needed information and assistance.

Federal Outreach Program established

by President Johnson’s National Council on Aging and funded by the Office of Economic Opportunity. Santa Cruz County was chosen as one of twelve regions because 19.1 % of our residents were age 65 or older and the national average was only 9%. Now, the office is also partially funded by public donations by businesses and individuals.

The social workers and volunteers who conducted the door-to-door outreach, later became involved in building the strong foundation of what was to become Senior Network services.

Today, seniors can contact by phone or go to one of the Senior Network Offices to find out what is being offered to help seniors find answers to many of their needs and questions. The first step could be to consult their comprehensive directory for phone numbers and addresses of the many agencies that are available for seniors. This Senior Services Directory is published every year by this office and will prove to be very valuable as a current reference book.

Support Our County Parks

anta Cruz County parks give access to our unique natural heritage from the mountains to the coastline. Access to local parks helps maintain our high quality of life and makes Santa Cruz County a great place to live and work. Our parks provide pools, beach access, and opportunities for healthy recreation.

The Parks Division of the County’s Public Works Department maintains 59 parks, beach access, and open spaces encompassing more than 1,400 acres.

In addition, Parks provides afterschool programs, swim lessons, art and science enrichment, and sports leagues for children. Programs for seniors provide

County Public Art Program.

His obsession resulted in signing up for the competitive training program at France’s Ecole Nationale des Arts di Cirque.

What happens next when this young American becomes engaged in a demanding regimen of tumbling, trapeze, juggling and clowning is quite a remarkable story.

There are plenty of thrills and spills, outsized personalities and even a few surprises in this personal history of circus life and how this entertainment institution has evolved over the years.

The book also features eight pages of color photos that picture this change over the years. The only downside to this excellent book is the rather small print the

publisher elected to use. It will be a little hard on aged eyes so that will slow what would have been a fast read down a bit.

No matter, though. This will just prolong the enjoyment of what will be a very pleasurable read.

Program of Santa Cruz and San Benito is recruiting volunteers to assist long-term care residents to live quality lives with dignity and respect. Volunteer Ombudsmen work with skilled nursing and assisted living facility residents to protect their rights and advocate for their safety and well-being.

The Ombudsman Program of Santa Cruz and San Benito is conducting Volunteer Training from April 10 through the 26th. Ombudsman training includes 36 hours of classes, 15 hours California. With the Program Coordinator’s supervision, volunteer Ombudsmen work solve at the lowest level whenever possible, monitor facilities and advocate for appropriate actions to meet the residents’ needs.

She’s As Sweet As Candy

ven with her leg in a cast, this one-year-old Maltese/Terrier is as sweet as Candy and that’s how she earned her name. Candy came to the shelter as a stray with a limp, which was the result of multiple fractures to her leg. Although her leg is still healing, it’s time for Candy to Candy is an adorable little girl who immediately wags her whole body to show her utter

little motor and she is not afraid to come over for attention. She loves to be held, touched, rubbed, petted and talked to. toddlers. Candy is still young and acts very puppy-like.

In a shelter environment and with her injury, Candy is being kept on crate rest with frequent potty trips. Candy has been very patient and while she very much enjoys her outdoor time, she takes her crate time in stride and chooses to nap or lay quietly in watch of all the things going on around her.

In a home, she won’t have to be on crate rest but will need her activity monitored to ensure proper healing. It is important to know that Candy will need one or more future x-rays to make sure things are mending and all further medical care will be the adopter’s responsibility. Her vet seems to think her prognosis of making a full recovery is good, however there is a chance she may have a little hitch in her step for life.

Candy is about 12 pounds and seems to have more of the Maltese like hair, which is soft,
