Across Scotts Valley Drive from the future hotel is the 18-acre Woodside residential and commercial development. Driving northeast along Scotts Valley Drive there is Victor Square, former headquarters of Victor Technologies. For old timers, this is a bitter memory of how can be. However, the site is now home to the very successful BRG Sports, with famous brands such as Bell Helmets, Ridell and Giro, dedicated to providing high-performance protective gear and accessories for action sports. from Victor Square is the location of the Borland Campus, another cautionary tale

of technological promise and failure. (Also the former home of Santa’s Village… but that’s another story.)

Still going northeast along Scotts Valley Drive, just past Vine Hill Elementary School, is Bethany Drive, the entrance to property that once was occupied by Bethany Bible College. After several false starts in redevelopment following the school’s closing, the site was approved by the City Council October 15, 2014 for the 1440 Center project, an educational learning center for individuals, groups, and corporations which will provide overnight accommodations with on-site dining accommodate up to 360 guests (which includes faculty and faculty assistants), and employ approximately 150 full-time equivalent employees and is expected to accommodations for 140 additional guests will be constructed as well as a parking garage. At project build out, the proposed project will accommodate up to 500 guests and employ approximately 225 employees.

PDC was a subsidiary of Safeway Stores, which was to provide the anchor store for the Scotts Valley Town Center. “Terramar property for the Town Center Project,” said Bustichi, “And its ownership opens up other possibilities for the project’s anchor store.”

The future of Scotts Valley is much brighter than it was just 5-6 years ago due to a city and City Council that has embraced the concept of recycling its land and building on its vision of the future.

Spaghetti Feed Event

Fundraiser for Ramey White BoUlder Creek — On Saturday, July 18, a “Spaghetti Feed” fundraiser will be held at the Boulder Creek Recreation Center from 4-8 p.m. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the family of Ramey White as he continues his journey of recovery.

For father of two, Ramey White, this was suddenly struck with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in January of this year, an unexpected illness that turned his whole world upside down.

Several families and local businesses from the Boulder Creek area have organized a Spaghetti Feed to raise money for the family. The event will feature live reggae music from Blazeen, children’s activities, including arts and crafts and a bouncy house, a silent auction and a drawing for a Private Chardonnay Yacht Cruise, valued at $2,000. Tickets for the drawing are $2 each or 7 for $10.

Tickets for the Spaghetti Feed, purchased in advance are $12 for adults, ($15 at the door), and $5 for children, ($7 at the door). A family of four “To Go Pack” is just $32. Tickets may be purchased online at http://bit.ly/rameyspaghetti.

Ramey’s illness was preceded by pain in his neck, and tingling in his arms and legs, only a couple of days before he fell ill. His initial symptoms were typical to the disorder, and unfortunately they be rushed to the emergency room. He was in Reno at the time with his wife Lindsay, their children Ryder, six, and Keaton, a baby where he found himself completely paralyzed on a ventilator in the intensive care unit of the Neurology Department at Renown Regional Medical Center.

Eighteen days later, Ramey was transferred to El Camino Hospital, and was only recently released to go home on May 21, where he is receiving continued care and support from his wife Lindsay and their extended family and friends.

After four months in hospital, Lindsay writes on their Go Fund Me blog that coming home was like a dream that she thought would never come true. She shares their ups and downs in their very heartfelt and uplifting story of struggle and survival, and the encouragement they have received from the local community, including other survivors of GBS. Lindsay writes: “Each morning we wake up and walk down to the bus stop.

Though it’s not far, it’s a good work out for me. Baby on my back, pushing Ramey in his chair and Ryder on his bike. Every morning we are reminded of how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place.”

Horses for Unique People FelToN — Some might consider activities involving horses as being only for those with strong arms and legs. After all the movies suggest that a John Wayne or Clint Eastwood type is required to control them. However, these movies don’t show the special attributes of a horse to provide equine therapy for people with a variety of special needs.

For example, a person who has trouble through equine therapy. Sitting on a horse when it walks is the closest you can get to the movements a human body makes while walking. This helps stimulate a person’s nerves and muscles used in walking.

According to PATH, the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship ibility, balance and coordination as well

any special needs program. Therapeutic riding can help improve walking, address

autism, develop muscle tone, deal with bipolar disorder or even provide a recreational experience for the vision impaired.

Recreation and exercise for one’s special needs are important parts of a healthy lifestyle just as they are for everyone else. The website www.abilities.com/ community/horse-therapy.html is one of many that speak to the therapeutic value of horsemanship.

Lichen Oaks Adaptive Riding Center (LOARC) (www.lichenoaksarc.org), a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, began operation this spring to provide an equine experience to young as well as older people who have special needs. To date, LOARC has served people with cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, autism and various emotional issues.

Each program is custom-tailored to the desires and needs of the participant but generally involves on-the-ground familiarization with and tacking of a horse, as well as riding with trained side-walkers and leaders to help stabilize the participant.

Wilderness Skills Institute Joins SV Chamber

W

is a bit out of the ordinary. On a typical day, the students meet their mentor at a trailhead. There they decide by consensus where they want their classroom to be for the day. A room with seats in rows is not one of the options.

The students may hike into redwoods a mile or more to the spot they’ve chosen. They take a moment for thanksgiving. Each student then sets individual goals and states those goals to the other six students in the class.

Next, students separate to be alone in nature for half an hour, after which they journal that experience and share it with the other students.

Next on the program is a period of undirected free play and exploration.

hile we know the history of sealevel rise for the past 150 years or so quite well, the future of sea level is much more uncertain, and the farther we go out into the future, the greater the uncertainties. Because sea level is intimately connected to climate, whatever happens to climate in the future is going to drive the level of the oceans.

The warming of the Earth, the oceans, and atmosphere are well documented. As long as we depend upon fossil fuels for most of our energy, we will continue to increase the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere, and the Earth will continue to heat up. A warmer planet means more ice melt and more seawater expansion, which both raise sea level.

So, how much can we expect? When do we need to start worrying?

Well, there are lots of people who either are or should be worried now. Anybody

living anywhere in the world that has had their home, business, community or city damaged or destroyed by high tides, storm waves, El Niño events, hurricanes, typhoons, cyclones or tsunamis should be concerned.

There are about 150 million people living now within three feet of high tide, and extreme events like those listed above can push water levels well above high tide. Recent examples of these locations in the USA include New Orleans during Katrina, and the shorelines of New York and New Jersey during Super Storm Sandy.

Freddie & Gingersnap Find a Cloud to Keep

Actually, it is an airship with two people in it, but Freddie and Gingersnap don’t realize that.

Throughout the narrative the airship characters sing a song entitled “A Cloud’s Song” (the words are included) and by story’s end your little one may well be singing this catchy tune too.

Although it is a bit nonsensical, this picture book will certainly appeal to youngsters who love silly stories and odd looking characters. Freddie and Ginto enjoying funny, rather bizarre situations.

2. How important are short-term contributions to sea-level rise (such as El Nino events, storm surges, and hurricanes)?

There are some who might ask, what difference does a few inches make anyway? Well, 6 inches by 2050 or 18 inches isn’t anything to lose sleep over if you are living comfortably most places in Santa Cruz, at least most places at least twenty feet above sea level.

But if you happen to live in the Venetian Courts on the beach in Capitola, at Potbelly Beach, or along Las Olas or Beach Drive in Rio Del Mar, and have been through any of the winters of the past 40 years, you probably think a bit more about the possibility of high tides, storm waves and El Niño events knocking loudly on your ocean view windows and sliding glass doors.

The farther we go out into the future, the greater the uncertainties become, simply because of the unknowns in things like global production of greenhouse gases.

Budget rebound even years after the Great Recession, the 2015-16 County budget is beginning to show signs of normalcy and reflect an improving economy.

While largely a status quo budget, meaning departments will continue to work with the same funding as last year, this year we were able to continue our slow climb toward recovery, with a strong focus on building our reserves, increasing public safety funding, and restoring our Parks Department.

The Board worked to build our reserves to help us prepare for future downturns by using $3.5 million in money owed by the State to the County since 2004 for “unfunded mandates.” We used the money from the State to increase our reserves, now at 7.9 percent of the general fund.

Our goal is to get the reserve to 10 percent in seven years (from our low of 7 percent). That will put us in a much better position to sustain established programs when the next economic downturn

comes and will improve our ratings in the financial markets to access the cheapest rates when we have to borrow money. She’ll greet you belly up with the expectation of rubs and it’s clear that she LOVES people of all ages and sizes. She does very well with other dogs in general, aside from a slight jealous/bossy streak when it comes to sharing human attention.

Kitty seems to know the ins and outs of outside pottying and many times will let you know when she needs to do her business. She loves to go for walks, enjoys a good full body rub, and will make a very loving and loyal partner to a lucky human.

Another special but not so adorable thing about our little girl is that she has Cushing’s Disease. Cushing’s is a condition that causes her adrenal glands to overproduce a hormone called cortisol.
