TIPS FOR TACKLING

STORM-RELATED ROOF DAMAGE

Are you a credentialed installer? Most shingle manufactures have strict guidelines for installation. These assure that you get the best performance and meet the requirements for the product and/or workmanship warranty. For example, CertainTeed Roofing issues education-based credentials such as the ShingleMaster or SELECT ShingleMaster.

Do you have storm experience? Some contractors are experienced in storm restoration and trained in storm damage evaluation and repair. These are the contractors you want when dealing with an insurance claim.

Where is your business located? You will want a local contractor with an established business location who can provide at least four to five references. This way, if you need to follow up for any reason, they will be easy to reach.

Do you carry liability and worker’s comp insurance?

Having your home severely damaged by a storm can turn your world upside down. The damage could simply be cosmetic, or so extensive as to render your home uninhabitable. In either case, you need to act fast, but smart, to ensure that your home will be properly repaired. Often, foremost among your concerns will be your roof, as it is protects the rest of your home and possessions. Start your post-storm repair process with these tips from the experts at CertainTeed Roofing.

1.

KEEP SAFETY FIRST.

2.

PREPARE FOR YOUR INSURANCE ADJUSTER.

3.

CHECK FOR SPECIAL REPAIR DESIGNATIONS REQUIRED BY YOUR INSURANCE.

4.

FIND THE RIGHT CONTRACTOR.

Leave emergency repairs to the professionals. A crisis that affects your home is an emotional event, but your safety is paramount. Do not attempt any emergency repairs unless you are qualified to do so.

Take time to do your own documentation. Take plenty of photos and notes on the damage to your home. This information will become a helpful checklist to compare against the insurance company’s findings. When it comes to the roof, check outside for things such as blown off shingles, damaged gutters and large branches that may have fallen onto your home. Also, if you can safely access your attic, examine the underside of your roof for damage or leaks.

In some instances, insurance companies require that certain materials be used in the repair of your home. In areas prone to hail storms, for example, you may be required to install shingles that are classified as impact resistant, which stand up better to hailstorms.

You will want to interview at least three contractors for your roof repair. This allows you to compare prices, work styles and other factors before making your selection. Here are some key questions to ask: 8 CoastalHome&Garden I fall-winter 2016

Your contractor should be fully insured with liability and workers compensation insurance. This will protect you should any workers get hurt during the repair process.

Are you licensed with the state or municipality? The answer to this question may be no, as not all states or municipalities have licensing requirements for roofing contractors. If licensing is required, there are websites, such as the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, where you can look up a company’s status. Find more tips to help guide your roof repair, and find qualified installers in your area, at CertainTeed.com.

HOW TO USE

color psychology when painting your home

REDS Reds

Reds evoke feelings of passion, energy and intimacy, so it’s an excellent color for workout rooms and master bedrooms. Red also inspires the appetite, so is a logical choice for dining rooms or kitchens. Chinese Red is one of the perennial favorites to play off dark stains with its saturated and sophisticated nature, rich in hue as it is in Chinese culture; the harbinger of joy and fortune.

ORANGES Orange has a friendly attitude that awakens and welcomes. Never understated, orange works well in family rooms and is a playful choice for children’s bedrooms or bonus rooms. Orange tones can also integrate into other colors, such as Coral Reef.

COOL COLOR FAMILIES Cool color families

Blue, green and violet are considered cool colors because the inherent tones of each shade. Reminiscent of water and the outdoors, cool colors stimulate feelings of peace and tranquility, and are great options for bedrooms, bathrooms and patio spaces.

BLUES Blues

Blue is soothing and elicits feelings of relaxation, which is perfect for bedrooms and bathrooms. Alternatively, blues should be kept out of the kitchen because it’s a color that’s associated with appetite suppression. Cool greenish blues are a calming hue that works in virtually every room.

GREENS Greens

COLOR PSYCHOLOGY: Using different hues to create emotion with paint. Do you ever wonder why you feel immediately relaxed when you enter a spa, yet when you enter a gym, you feel alert and energized? The answer can be found in the colors selected to decorate the space. Interior designers can use color psychology to evoke an emotional response, Homeowners can use this strategy to connect colors with emotions and memories to create one-of-a-kind spaces. Color psychology starts by exploring warm and cool hues and then using these different tones to manipulate mood throughout your home. It’s easy to do with the tips below.

Warm color families WARM COLOR FAMILIES Red, orange and yellow are considered warm colors since they are associated with images of heat, like fire or sunshine. Warm families of color are bold and powerful when incorporated into home design.

YELLOWS Yellows

Because yellow reflects light, it’s an excellent choice for foyers and dark hallways. Its cheery nature has the ability to create an uplifting mood in homes. Rich yellows are great accent colors because they catch the eye. A great color to consider is favorite: Butterscotch. This color isn’t for the faint of heart the color features an acidy, deep mustard feel but is a great accent color paired with neutrals. I find its pop can really spark up a room. 10 CoastalHome&Garden I fall-winter 2016

Green tones provide a feeling of familiarity because they are found throughout nature. Light greens are ideal for living rooms and offices; dark greens are wonderfully rich as accent colors. Vivid greens add unexpected pop and can also work well as an accent color, The deep turquoise tone is associated with parts of the ocean. This would make a great front door color on a white or gray colored house. This color would pair well with some natural stone or brick or wood.

VIOLETS Violets

Purple tones are immediately attractive to children, making them a great paint option in playrooms or bonus rooms. Additionally, violet is also a stunning accent color in bathrooms. Rich berry tone can be playful, this would make a really dramatic accent wall color in any room; this could even be used as a really fresh front door color as well.

STYLE ECO-SENSE LUXURY IN ANY BATHROOM

When you’re improving a bathroom, do you assume that luxury upgrades may look good but aren’t always good for the environment? Or that sensible, eco-friendly fixtures, finishes and materials will lack the aesthetic of more luxurious ones? Just a few decades ago, the assumptions might have been accurate, but today a plethora of luxury bathroom options perfectly marry good sense with great style.

and switching to a low-flow shower head could save the average household nearly 3,000 gallons of water per year, the EPA says. Yet the shower is also one of the most cherished features in any bathroom; it’s not just where you get clean, it’s also a place where you relax and wash away the day’s stresses, or get invigorated for the day by washing away early morning drowsiness.

Whether you’re planning a bathroom renovation, or just looking to make one or two stunning yet sensible upgrades, here are some improvements that can turn your bathroom into a luxurious, savvy and stylish oasis:

Today’s water-conserving showerheads not only reduce the amount of water you use per shower, they can be elegant design statements that also deliver a satisfying experience. Features like air-injection technology in TOTO’s AeroJet Rain Shower infuse air into the water stream to create larger droplets, allowing you to enjoy a fuller shower experience while still saving water. You can find eco-friendly showerheads in virtually every style, from rainfall to hand showers and even multiple jets.

ELEGANT & ECO-FRIENDLY FIXTURES

FABULOUS FEATURES

Water-conserving bathroom technology has come a long way since the earliest low-flow showerheads and low-flush toilets appeared. Yet the stereotype persists that in order to conserve water, a fixture must deliver a less satisfying experience and graceful appearance. That’s far from true of modern luxury toilets, showerheads and faucets from manufacturers like TOTO.

Luxury and environmental awareness can also meet in other aspects of a well-appointed bathroom, including design, decor and accessories. For example, adding a skylight can fill a bath with wholesome natural light that nourishes the body, mind and spirit while also helping reduce dependence on artificial light sources. The skylight can also provide passive ventilation - all while preserving much-desired privacy.

High efficiency toilets can help homeowners make significant strides in water conservation; saving nearly 13,000 gallons of water per year, according to the EPA. And while early iterations of water-conserving toilets may have lacked in power and beauty, modern iterations combine eco-sense with style sense. For example, the ultra high-efficiency NEOREST 500H from TOTO uses a conservation-minded 0.8 or 1 gallon of water per flush, yet excels at removing waste and cleaning the bowl’s surface and rim thoroughly. With a design inspired by long-view trends in architecture and global design, this high-tech commode’s look is modern yet timeless. An integrated Washlet personal cleansing system is long on luxury with warm aerated water, a warm air dryer, heated seat, auto open/close, auto-flush and in-bowl catalytic deodorizer. Showering accounts for about 17 percent of a home’s water use, 12 CoastalHome&Garden I fall-winter 2016

Flooring is another area inspiration for your senses doesn’t have to take a back seat to green considerations. From tiles made of recycled materials like reclaimed ceramic, to foot-massaging pebble tiles made of recycled glass, it’s easy to find flooring material that meets your expectations for luxury and beauty while still minimizing their impact on the environment. While traditional luxury countertops like granite require materials to be mined from the ground, luxurious eco-friendly options can be just as beautiful. For example, countertops made of cement embedded with recycled glass come in a variety of hues and patterns to fit any decor theme. Or, go for a more ethereal look with countertops made of 100 percent recycled glass. Luxury, style and eco-sensibilities can meet harmoniously in your bathroom when you choose the right fixtures and finishes.

BOLD Blended UPGRADE YOUR HOME WITHOUT A FULL RENOVATION

Remodeling your home can be a big, and oftentimes, overwhelming project, but it doesn’t always have to be. Sometimes all you really need is a fresh coat of paint or smaller upgrades. If you’re not looking to do a whole home renovation, and just want to give your interior a little pick-meup, consider revamping colors, textures and your home appliances.

COLOR IS KEY Daring patterns and color combos are gaining favor in homes across the country, especially in the most used room in the house – the kitchen. Give your kitchen a fresh, new look by taking a multitoned cabinetry approach. Apply different shades to your upper and lower cabinets to create a completely new feel. Opting for colored cabinets, as opposed to a stain, helps develop a broader palette for the space and produces an identifiable color scheme. A similar approach can be taken for kitchens with islands. Make your island the focal point by opting for a vibrantly colored base or countertop. When it comes to your countertops and backsplashes, you can also achieve a standout look with a high-contrast approach. Pair deeply colored counters or backsplashes with more subtly hued cabinets and flooring to make a dramatic statement.

BLEND IN Whether your style is big and bold or clean and minimalistic, creating a cohesive look for a space is important. Oftentimes, outdated home appliances get in the way of an otherwise seamless home design. A simple home appliance upgrade can easily change the overall style of a room for the better. With more homeowners tuned into online and televised DIY resources, manufacturers are challenged like never before to deliver high-end products that blend flawlessly into the background of a living space.

A LITTLE TEXTURE GOES A LONG WAY Also take into consideration textures and materials – tile and stone are the industries top trends, but unexpected pairings such as brick and butcher block can lend a whole new level of style. These simple details can make a drastic difference in the feel of your home, no matter what room in the house you’re sprucing up. In the kitchen or bathroom, choosing the right style and material of countertop can make or break your intended design. For example, the beauty of granite’s natural patterns make it a one-of-a-kind 14 CoastalHome&Garden I fall-winter 2016

look for your home, while a newer kitchen design trend, stainless steel, provides a distinctive look. Another easy way to play with the texture in your home is by placing small, decorative objects throughout your living quarters. Natural and organic objects, like shells, stones or twigs, can be used to inject an outdoor feel in different rooms.

Jumbo Loans! Offering

Competitive rates on loan amounts up to $1,500,000*

Most importantly, consider balance when seeking out different textures. Overdoing it can detract from your attempts to liven up your home, making it instead feel cluttered or disorganized.

FIND THE RIGHT FEATURES While the aesthetic fit of a new appliance is important, so are the features that ensure your purchase answers the needs of your lifestyle. When shopping for updated appliances, look at how the models you’re considering perform in areas such as:

Noise control: Especially if you’re replacing an older cooling and heating system, you may have been battling the sounds it was emitting for years. You’ll immediately notice the difference with many of today’s appliances, which are designed to offer quiet operation. Some even function at a sound level lower than a human whisper. Energy management: Look for models that offer features to help manage your energy consumption. One solution is a timer that allows you to create scheduling options to adjust the temperature, and thus the amount of energy, being used in rooms when they are not occupied. Intelligent comfort: For appliances like refrigerators and

freezers, it’s an automatic assumption that they will maintain a consistent temperature. You may be surprised to discover that other appliances can offer the same continuity when it comes to comfort.

Programmable functions: With continuous developments

in technology, various home appliances now have the capability to connect to smart phones and tablets. Through these apps, you can regulate multiple settings for your home appliance operations from virtually anywhere with just a click of a button. Family Features offers these simple tips from Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating. One example is Mitsubishi Electric’s Designer Series indoor units. These units are sleek, stylish and slim. Sustainable Materials

GLASS Glass is a sustainable, infinitely recyclable material witch saves precious natural resources. It is virtually maintenance free and can endure high heat without cracking or scorching. The combinations of shapes, colors and artistic embellishments are almost limitless as shown in the pieces from Thinkglass. (pictured above)

SALVAGED WOOD A wood countertop will add richness to your kitchen from the wood’s history. Look for wood that has a story — maybe it’s salvaged from some iconographic building or even from the project’s remodel. An island is a better option for wood as it is more susceptible to damage by water and heat, so it’s best located away from the sink, dishwasher, and range.

BAMBOO Bamboo’s best green feature is that it’s a rapidly renewable resource and is naturally stronger and harder than most other hardwoods. When managed responsibly, 16 CoastalHome&Garden I fall-winter 2016

it is a fast, sustainable source of raw material for a wide variety of uses. Be aware, though, that almost all commercial bamboo comes from China, so a lot of energy goes into transporting the product to the United States.

at all. This surface has top-notch durability that stands up to even commercial kitchens and their rigorous standards for cleanliness.

RECYCLED PAPER Paper countertops? Regardless of preconceptions, recycled paper countertops are pretty tough and durable. Their dense and non-porous construction make them highly resistant to stains and nicks and are easier to maintain. Since paper is far lighter than natural stone materials, recycled paper countertops can come in longer spans without requiring additional support.

STAINLESS STEEL Not only are steel counters aesthetically pleasing but they’re resistant to water, heat, stains, and just about anything else. Stainless steel has a non-porous surface, which means that no type of liquid or substances can penetrate into the material

CONCRETE Concrete counters can be a terrific green choice if they are sourced locally or cast in place (transporting heavy slabs great distances can be expensive and timely). A big pro of concrete countertops is that they are easy to maintain and keep clean, a simple solution of soap and water is all you need. Cement will not decay overtime and will retain its integrity.

ROMAINE LETTUCE

FALL GARDENING

SUCCESS Scrumptious, healthy veggies, hefty harvests and a break on your grocery bill many appealing advantages draw people to growing their own vegetables. If you’ve never gardened before or you’re a green thumbed, garden-guru, you’ll soon figure out that fall’s a great time to get growing your own produce. Cooler temperatures and milder sun can spell success for any gardener who takes up the trowel as autumn approaches. Favorable fall conditions mean growing cool weather crops is comparatively easy, with less watering and care needed for a successful garden. Cool crops will start out strong, growing quickly and then slow their growth as days become shorter and cooler. You’ll also need to work less to protect your garden from pests, as both insects and animal populations will taper off in fall. And since weeds will germinate less frequently and grow slower, weeding won’t be a time-consuming task. Finally, more rain and less sun and heat mean you’ll need to water less. If you’re ready for gardening success, now is the time to grab that hoe, break some ground and get growing. Tips to get you started:

PICK YOUR PLANTS Start with transplants, rather than seed. A shorter, gentler growing season means you need to get started right away. Many local garden centers will have a selection of transplants from producers like Bonnie Plants that will grow well in your geographic region. Transplants will be six weeks old and give you a jump start. You’ll be able to harvest sooner than if you start from seed and skip the volatile, sometimes unsuccessful, seed-starting process. Bonnie’s transplants come in earth-friendly biodegradable pots, making 18 CoastalHome&Garden I fall-winter 2016

planting easy, preventing transplant shock and sparing the use of much plastic. As the pot biodegrades, it’ll add nutrients to your soil, too. Choose cool crops that your family likes to eat. Popular fall favorites include:

LACINATO KALE A cold-hardy vegetable, kale leaves sweeten after frost. Kale is a super food, and Lacinato leaves extend excellent health benefits, lowering cholesterol, fighting cancer and decreasing inflammation.

EARLY DIVIDEND BROCCOLI Many greens love the fall, and broccoli is no exception. Plant stalks 18 inches apart and get ready for an easy, hearty harvest. Broccoli is high in fiber and calcium.

CABBAGE The quintessential fall vegetable, Bonnie’s hybrid cabbage grows large, round bluegreen heads. From salads to stews, cabbage adds a punch of flavor and nutrients like beta-carotene, vitamins C and K, and plenty of fiber.

Romaine packs a big punch with more vitamins, minerals, fiber and phytonutrients than other popular types of lettuce. Rich in fiber, vitamin C and beta-carotene, romaine is especially good for heart health. Space transplants 18 inches apart. Once you know what you’ll be planting, it’s time to get the ground ready. Remove any garden debris from the past season’s garden and remove weeds before they go to seed. Size up your soil. Loosen compacted soil, fluffing it up with a garden fork. Soil test and amend if necessary. Adding a 2-inch layer of bagged compost is always good practice. You can also spread a balanced fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, according to labeled instructions, for added nutrients. Plants will need an inch of moisture per week, either through rain or supplemental watering. You might want to consider raised bed planting; beds are easy to build or buy and allow you to start out with good quality soil. Plus, you’ll bend less come harvest time. Position your plot and let the sunshine in.Most vegetables need full sun - at least six hours per day. Finally, don’t fear frost. When frost threatens, cover plants with floating row cover, cold frame or a cloche. Or, you can grow fall veggies in a container and move pots to a protected location on frosty nights. Whether you’re working in the backyard, a raised bed or in containers on a deck, you’ll see how easy and successful fall planting can be. Start now to ensure you enjoy a healthy, plentiful and fulfilling fall harvest. For more tips on fall gardening visit www.bonnieplants.com.

From dogs and cats filling up social media feeds – some even with their own profiles – to true pet celebrities who command the attention of millions, animals have become a major part of the digital landscape. With this in mind, Mars Petcare conducted a survey to learn more about people’s social media habits when it comes to animals. Here are some of the top findings.

All Animals, All the Time

PETS

About 65 percent of pet owners post about their furry friends on social media an average of two times per week. One in six said they’ve created a social media profile specifically for their pet – and half of those pet owners say their pets get more social attention than they do online. One third said they post about their pets as much, and as often, as they do about their human family and 13 percent admitted to posting about their pets even more than they do their human relatives.

AND SOCIAL MEDIA

Pet Love Trumps Personal Vanity

More than half of pet owners polled care more about getting “likes” and/or comments for their pet-related posts than they do for most other topics, including changes to their own profile picture. Whichever way you throw the ball, pet posts matter most.

Call Them the “Paw-Purratzi”

Thirty percent of pet owners follow famous animals on social media. The bottom line is people love pets, whether it’s their own or one with real rock star status, and love sharing their stories with the world. The survey underscores what was already known: Pets have become an integral part of people’s lives and pop culture. W H AT I S PICKLING? Mountain Feed & Farm Supply staff writer

The Process of pickling began nearly 4,000 years ago to preserve perishable foods for months or even years. Nowadays, the average person in the U.S. consumes 9 lbs. of pickles each year. Pickling preserves food by anaerobic (Without Oxygen) fermentation in brine or vinegar, or by canning produce in a vinegar-brine, or thirdly by wild fermentation.

VINEGAR BRINED VS. NATURALLY FERMENTED PICKLES Using a basic mixture of vinegar, water and salt creates a brine to pickle food and then uses home canning techniques. Foods that are pickled in vinegar brine are not fermented. Pickling using Natural Fermentation for foods with high water content is done by salting the produce to draw the water thereby creating brine. This method is used for making cabbage into sauerkraut. Naturally Fermented pickles contain healthy probiotics and beneficial live bacteria that vinegar-brined pickles won’t have. Natural fermentation requires a pickling crock or a fermentation kit. Eating fermented foods can lead to better digestive health, save money on the grocery bill & cut down on waste. Three Methods For Vinegar-Brine Pickling At Home are quick-pickling, salt-brine pickling, and vinegar-brine soak and rinse method.

QUICK PICKLES Pack fresh produce and spices into sterilized canning jars, pour a vinegar-based pickling brine completely submerging the produce, then use the water bath canning method. Asparagus is blanched before pickling. Beets are cooked until tender and cooled before pickling. Cucumbers, carrots, cauliflower, peppers and green beans are all great candidates for quick-pickling. You will have delicious pickles ready to eat in just a few days.

SALT-BRINED METHOD This is used for pickling vegetables that have a high water content. Before the vegetables are packed into the canning jars, that are soaked it in a salt-vinegar brine solution to draw the water out. This allows the pickling liquid to create a better flavor, texture and shelf life. After you have salt-brined your produce, thoroughly rinse and drain it then use the ‘quickpickling’ method. Bread-and-butter pickles, kosher-style dill pickles, cabbage, zucchini, and other high-water content vegetables can be pickled using the salt-brined technique making classic tasting pickles with the flavor, crunch and shelf-life that you expect from your favorite storebought brands.

VINEGAR-BRINE SOAK & RINSE METHOD This method draws the maximum amount of water out of the produce by soaking, draining and soaking a second time using a vinegar solution. Classic recipes like nine-day, 12day pickles and Sweet Gherkins are common uses of the vinegar-brined method offering an unmistakable crunch, texture and flavor. 22 CoastalHome&Garden I fall-winter 2016

PICKLING & FERMENTATION SUPPLIES Mountain Feed and Farm Supply has put together a handy list of pickling supply and equipment. www.mountainfeed.com =

A GOOD BOOK=

The Art of Fermentation by Sandor Elix Katz is the considered the bible of fermentation books and is a must-read for any fermenter. An excellent fermentation recipe book is Real Food Fermentation by Alex Lewin. =

MASON JARS=

1 pt., 1 qt., and 2 qt. jars with 86 mm “wide mouth” jars. These are the jars common for Mason jar canning and a great way to start fermenting in small batches. Mason jars allow small batches to test out different recipes and when your ferment is complete you can just twist on the lid and pop it in the fridge. Plus, they are clear so you have a good visual on what is going on with your recipe at all times. One of the easiest things to ferment in a mason jar is sauerkraut. =

GOOD KITCHEN TOOLS=

A stainless steel bowl, measuring spoons and cups and lots of kitchen towels. These items are essential for clean preparation and sticking to your recipe. =

GOOD PICKLING SALT=

Choose a salt that is not iodized and free of other minerals. A pure sea salt, Celtic salt or pickling salt is a good choice. Always make sure you are following all safety guidelines outlined by the USDA (https://nifa.usda.gov/press-release/usdas-complete-guide-home-canning-available) when canning anything.

TIPS

FOR SELLING YOUR HOME

FAST

IMPROVE YOUR LANDSCAPING.

MAKE THE FRONT DOOR INVITING.

Curb appeal is crucial to a good first impression, so make sure your home’s lawn and/or front yard is immaculate. Mow the lawn, prune the bushes, weed the garden, and if needed, plant some new plants to fill in spaces.

A fresh coat of paint, especially in a color that contrasts with the home, will make the front door stand out. Replace faded house numbers so buyers can see them from the curb.

TAKE COLOR DOWN A NOTCH. You might like your orange bedroom, but a potential buyer may not. Paint all walls a neutral color that will appeal to a wide range of buyers.

CLEAN THE OUTSIDE.

MAKE REPAIRS.

A sloppy exterior will make buyers think you’ve slacked off on interior maintenance as well. Be sure to clean the gutters and pressure wash your home’s siding. Tidy up any areas on both sides of the house that might hold clutter. If needed, touch up fence stain or paint.

In a buyer’s market, you want your home to be in the best condition possible. Take care of major defects like broken windows or a leaky roof that could discourage buyers.

REMOVE CLUTTER AND DEPERSONALIZE.

MAKE EVERY SURFACE SHINE.

Clean up clutter by renting a storage unit for knickknacks, photos, extra furniture and other personal items. The less in the house, the more the buyer can envision it as their home.

From ceiling fans to baseboards, clean your home until it sparkles. A potential buyer will look in every nook and cranny!

WAT E R

CONSERVATION From the Soquel Creek Water District

Save Our Wa ter a nd Our Trees Many District customers have made water conservation a way of life. From collecting shower warm-up water and taking shorter showers, replacing thirsty turf grass with water-wise plants, to installing rainwater collection tanks and greywater systems, our customers have really made a difference! While we greatly appreciate your efforts, we also want to make sure that you give your trees the water they need to survive. While trees are beautiful to look at and add value to our homes and neighborhoods, they also provide numerous environmental benefits such as:

Providing shade to your landscape which in turn reduces water needs Reducing soil erosion and storm water runoff Keeping your home cooler on warm days For some tips to keep your trees alive in a water-wise way, check out the statewide Save Our Water and Our Trees website. Key things to remember are to:

Deeply & slowly water mature trees 1-2 times per month during the dry season with a drip irrigation system Water toward the edge of the tree canopy where the roots spread out, not at the base of the tree Use a healthy layer of mulch to retain moisture, 4-6 inches is ideal (you can sometimes get this for free from arborists or check out vision recycling for affordable mulch) Www.Visionrecycling.Com/recycled-products If possible, consider installing a greywater laundry-to landscape system to irrigate your trees and landscape. The District offers a generous greywater rebate and resources to help you get started. You can also check out the Central Coast Greywater Alliance for a directory of professionals to help design your system. If a greywater system doesn’t work for you, use the warm-up water from your shower! 28 CoastalHome&Garden I fall-winter 2016

Always use a positive shut-off hose nozzle for outdoor water use.

Always repair irrigation system and plumbing leaks within 72 hours.

• Restaurants serve drinking water only upon customer request. • Lodging establishments give customers staying more than one day the option to forego daily linen service. Temporary Stage 3 Water Shortage Emergency rules • Car washing at home must be efficient.

Report Water Waste Most people aren’t wasting water on purpose... they simply don’t know the rules. By anonymously reporting water waste you’re helping your Water District educate the community and save water. Provide an address, detailed description, date, time, and a photo, if possible. The District will contact the responsible party. This initial contact is a reminder about the rules. Most people are willing to correct the issue reported and thank us for bringing it to their attention.

TAKE YOUR GARDEN

TO NEW

HEIGHTS

Adding a simple trellis to your raised bed or planting box is an easy way to maximize your growing space. For example, you can plant shrub-type plants like peppers in a row in the front portion of the planter, then add a trellis in the back portion and encourage vining veggies like beans, peas and cucumbers to grow up the structure. For larger raised beds, you can build a vineyard style pergola above the bed. A sturdy pergola made from Redwood can support a variety of substantial plants such as squash, but you don’t have to be limited to fruits and veggies that grow on vines. Affix small boxes or even burlap bags to allow for greater variety in your vertical garden.

LOFTIER AMBITIONS Is your raised bed nestled against a wall? Or perhaps your planting box perches on one side of your backyard deck. You can add a free-standing wall by building a redwood frame and stretching hex wire across the frame. Vines will readily climb the wire, but you can also attach terra cotta pots to the wire to hold herbs, small vegetables and even flowers. In a variation on the trellis concept, you can build a framework with multiple rows of narrow redwood troughs above your raised bed or planting box; the troughs make a great growing spot for herbs. You can also create a stepped planter by building a series of boxes in graduated sizes and then stacking them atop each other widest to narrowest. Or, for a more modern look, build a contemporary ladder-style vertical garden with box-shaped removable planters.

Generations of space-challenged gardeners have relied on raised beds and planting boxes to grow a harvest of vegetables, fruits and herbs - even in the tightest spaces. Vertical gardening gave us a whole new way to garden in tight spots, by encouraging plants to grow up, rather than spread out. Now, by marrying the two techniques, you can create a visually stunning, artistic display of gardening prowess that will keep your table full of fresh produce throughout the summer.

BUILDING THE FOUNDATION A well-built, durable planting foundation, such as a raised bed or planting box made from Redwood, is an essential starting point. Decide where yours will go and start building. You can find free project plans online to help you build the frame for a raised bed or a planting box. Whatever style of planter you build, it’s important to choose a quality construction material. Redwood is often the choice of savvy gardeners because it’s naturally rot resistant as well as durable and easy to work with. It needs no chemical finishes or paints to preserve or beautify it, and is harvested from sustainably managed forests.

SIMPLE STEPS ONWARD AND UPWARD With a good foundation in place, it’s time to consider all the ways you can turn your raised bed or planter into a vertical masterpiece. 34 CoastalHome&Garden I fall-winter 2016

For those of you that want to purse gardening in a raised bed and don’t have the time or the skill to DYI consider the Knox Garden Box. Hand-made with high quality redwood, in a variety of sizes and heights. Created locally by Warren Knox, with sustainable products. He has be hand crafting the Knox box for over 20 years. It ‘s durable, pest resistant and can be used in small spaces. So whether you purchase one or build one it’s a great time to explore creative ways to bring vertical gardening and raised beds or planter boxes together for a bountiful harvest!

RECYCLED HOUSEHOLD ITEMS GOOD FOR THE BUDGET

BETTER FOR THE WORLD

= In almost all cases, things that you buy used will cost much less than purchasing the same item new.

= Buying used means fewer items are discarded in our landfills.

= If you need something specific, check consignment stores first. Most of the time, items at consignment stores are in near-new condition!

= When you buy used, it saves the raw materials that would be used to create the product. It also saves the energy used, the pollution created, in the production, manufacturing, and transportation of the new item.

= Second-hand perusing ensures your money stays in the community where it can benefit local businesses and charities.

EXERCISE EQUIP. Everyone wants to exercise, but few make the time to do it. That means many people have exercise gear they want to unload cheap or even free on sites like eBay and Freecycle. Check out stores that specialize in used sports/exercise gear.

FURNITURE Used furniture from garage sales and consignment stores is often a great bargain. Look around your house and mentally add up the amount you’ve spent on new furniture. Had you bought used, you could easily have saved 50 percent.

DISHWARE Dishes don’t go bad with time and can be expensive when purchased new. Thrift shops, yard sales and online sites are good for finding unique used dishware that fits your personality.

36 CoastalHome&Garden I fall-winter 2016

= It also saves on the packaging of the new item—production of the packaging, and the waste that it creates.

GARDEN TOOLS You will see plenty of tools for sale at hugely reduced prices at yard sales and online. Well-made items with few moving parts —like hammers, wrenches, rakes and spades —will keep for decades once properly stored and maintained.

HOME DECOR Mirrors, wall-hangings and household knick-knacks are usually well-loved but rarely handled. So, used accents typically show little signs of wear-and-tear and add the same personality to your pad as new pieces.

APPLIANCES Many people invest in smaller appliances like blenders, juicers, mixers and more, only to find these products lie idle in their cupboard for months. These are a great buys. Sometimes the appliance is still in the original box!

What is a Green Roof? A green roof system is part of an existing roof which includes high quality waterproofing and root repellant system, a drainage system, filter cloth, and a lightweight growing medium with plants. Green roof systems may be modular, with drainage layers, filter cloth, growing media and plants already prepared in movable interlocking grids, or loose laid where each component of the system is installed separately. A green roof is a confined green space on top of a man-made structure below, at, or above grade, with the plants growing and accessible to sunlight and air providing a wide range of public and private benefits.

Noise Reduction: Green roofs can reduce outside sound

by 40 decibels.

Increased Biodiversity:

Green roofs can sustain a variety of plants and invertebrates, and provide a habitat for various bird species. Increasing biodiversity affects the environment to maintain the existence of food, medicinal plants, flowers, maintain hydrological cycles, cleanse water and air, and store and cycle nutrients.

Stormwater Management:

• Green roofs water is stored and then absorbed by the plants that return it to the atmosphere through transpiration and evaporation. • Green roofs can retain between 70-90 % of rainwater. • Green roofs act as natural filters for water run off. • Green roofs reduce stormwater runoff and delay peak flow periods.

Roofing Durability: A green roof decreases exposure

to large temperature fluctuations and ultra violet radiation which causes roofing deterioration.

Improved Air Quality:

• Green roofs capture airborne pollutants and dust. • Green roofs filter and improve air quality. • Temperature moderating by green roofs reduces demand on power plants decreasing CO2 and other polluting by-products released into the air.

Green Roof Benefits Energy Efficiency: Greater insulation of green roofs reduces the energy needed to moderate the temperature of a building. Roofs cause heat loss in winter and hottest temperatures in summer. According to the National Research Council of Canada a green roof reduced energy demand for air conditioning in summer by 75%.

Fire Retardation: Green roofs provide much lower heat generated when burning than conventional roofs Reduction of Electromagnetic Radiation:

Green roofs can reduce electromagnetic radiation penetration by 99.4%. 38 CoastalHome&Garden I fall-winter 2016

Amenity Spaces: Green

roofs help to positively affect the urban environment by increasing amenity, green space, and uses, including: • Private terraces and patios • Recreational space (lawn bowling and children’s playgrounds) • Community gardens (local food production or co-ops) • Commercial space (display areas and restaurant terraces)

Marketing: Green roofs can act as an incentive to those interested in the multiple benefits of green roofs. Green roofs can facilitate: • Lower tenant turnover • Increased property value • Sales

STYLING YOUR GALLERY WALL By Andrew Lenz

If your picture is worth framing, then it is certainly worth going about it the right way. You have taken or purchased the perfect picture, now you need the perfect frame to present it. Frames should not take away from the picture, but instead they showcase it. Everyone has that one picture that they love, care for, and cherish; the best way to keep that memory preserved is by enclosing it with the right frame. If your picture is worth framing, then it is certainly worth going about it the correct way. Searching for the right picture frame may not be easy; however, here are four important elements to think about before coming across that ideal frame. The first is color; do any colors stand out the most in your painting or picture? Sometimes the solution is grab the most prominent color that sticks out the most to you, sometimes it’s matching a wellrepresented color that is getting lost and needs the frame to enhance it. Often more than one frame will work with your picture and in those cases, you can pick the one that best fits your home décor. You do not want your wall hangings to bring down your home, but to accentuate it. 40 CoastalHome&Garden I fall-winter 2016

There is no better way to highlight your house then having just the right décor. If you have a very modern home, then contemporary wood frames or metal frames may be just for you. If you have a traditional home, then perhaps a gold wood frame or classic styled stained wood frame may be appropriate. Remember, black is always the safe way to go, but not always the best-looking. The bold color is a great choice for framing pictures or awards in an office or workplace, but not always a good pick when decorating your formal living room or stunning front porch. Perhaps you may want to mix color shades or give your picture a 3D look by adding matting. Matting is used to guard and add to the artwork. The matboard is located along the borders of the picture and under the glass. Some examples of mat window styles are the following: square or rectangular, oval, diamond, cathedral, and heart shaped. There are many different styles to fit your personality. Matting is available using either regular boards that are less expensive but fade can damage artwork or conservation boards that hold their color and preserve artwork. Size is the next component to consider; getting a frame too big, or too small, could ruin your exceptional piece of art.

You should ask yourself, “Do I want a very wide frame, or a medium sized, or even a highly-textured one?” Too big of a frame will overpower your picture, also too small of a frame will look odd or be structurally unsound. If you are having your picture matted, the frame should be a proper proportion compared to the width of the matting. Resist the temptation to make your mat narrow, you need to give your picture space to breath. Your professional picture framer can help you get this just right. Thirdly, the glazing—glass or acrylic (generic for Plexiglas®)—is extremely important consideration because no one wants glare or blurriness to interfere with their picture, painting, drawing, etc. Also, is breakage a worry? Then acrylic is a good option instead of glass. Are you worried about scratching? Then you may wish to stick with glass. Regardless, there are choices with either of these materials: ultraviolet filter to help prevent fading, a non-glare etched surface or an opticallycoated surface to greatly reduce glare with no distortion plus combinations of those options. UV-filtering, optically-coated low-reflection glasses (such as Museum Glass®) are the best, but they are also the biggest investment. The frame shop you will be considering

going to is the last factor to consider. Imagine if you had a three hundred dollar piece of art and went to a convenience store and purchased a twenty dollar frame? You do not want to ruin your masterpiece by compromising with a cheap frame that doesn’t fit or is the wrong color. A several hundred dollar framing project that you appreciate every evening will amortize to mere pennies a day over 20 years. You will want to go to someone of expertise so that they can help guide you along in making your selections. Try your local framing shops to find the best skilled professionals. Referrals from your friends are often a good place to start. A word of advice about comparing frame shops. First, prices. Frame shops set their own retail prices. If you are going to compare prices, consider the bottom line after any discounts. One shop’s 50% off sale may result in a price that is about the same as another shop’s everyday pricing. Coupons and sales aren’t always what they first appear. Secondly, prices aren’t everything. Even if all the materials used are exactly the same, execution varies from shop to shop. Do the frame corners meet precisely? Or are they offset a bit? Are the corners of the mat window clean or are they fuzzy, overcut, or not exactly straight? Are there streaks or specks under the glass in your finished picture? There are also things you can’t see where you either have to trust your framer or be bold and tear your picture apart to see that proper materials and techniques used. That’s where your frame shop’s reputation for integrity is very important. There’s a lot to consider, but there’s nothing quite like seeing your picture beautifully framed up and enriching your entryway or living room for many years—sometimes even generations!

HOMEMADE BLUEBERRY POPTARTS

BLACKBERRY PUMPKIN SPICE CAKE

INGREDIENTS: For the crust:

INGREDIENTS: For the cake:

1 1/2 (3 sticks) cups cold butter, cubed 1 cup all purpose flour 2 cups whole wheat pastry flour (I use Bob’s Red Mill) 1 egg, beaten 5 tablespoons cold water 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1 teaspoon salt

12 ounces of California Giant Blueberries The zest and juice from one lemon ¼ cup of sugar ½ teaspoon of cinnamon ¼ teaspoon of sea salt

For the filling:

For the glaze:

¼ cup of butter (browned) 2/3 cup + 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar 2 tablespoons of pure maple syrup 1 ½ teaspoons of vanilla extract Cinnamon and sugar for sprinkling

DIRECTIONS: Prepare your favorite pie crust recipe. Place your prepared crust in the fridge, until you are ready to roll out. For the filling, combine blueberries, lemon zest and juice, sugar, cinnamon and salt in a bowl. Set to the side. On a floured surface, roll out your pie dough. Cut the dough into rectangles (about 4”x 6”). Spread a layer of the blueberry mixture over one of the rectangles, and then cover with another rectangle of dough. Crimp the edges with a fork. Repeat until you have used all of the dough. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. It’s ok if the blueberry filling starts to run, I think they are even more beautiful that way! While the pop tarts cool, prepare the glaze. In a medium size pan, brown the butter. Then whisk in powdered sugar, maple syrup and vanilla. The glaze should be slightly thick. Drizzle the glaze over the pop tarts, then sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar.

1/2 cup butter 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar 2 eggs, beaten 2 1/4 cups sifted cake flour 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons cinnamon 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 1 cup solid-pack pumpkin 3/4 cup milk

12 ounces cream cheese, softened 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened 5 1/4 cups powdered sugar 1 1/2 tablespoons vanilla extract 2 cups California Giant blackberries

For the frosting:

DIRECTIONS: For the cake: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Mix the butter and sugar together until it is light and fluffy. Blend in the eggs, one at a time. In a separate bowl, whisk together the pumpkin and milk. Alternate adding the pumpkin mixture and dry ingredients to the egg mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Grease and flour three 9” round cake pans. Pour the batter into the prepared pans, dividing equally. Bake the cakes in the 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes or until the center of the cake bounces back when you touch it.

For the frosting:

Mix the butter and cream cheese together, scraping down the sides as needed, for about 2-3 minutes. With the mixer on low speed, add the powdered sugar, a little at a time, until it is thoroughly mixed. Add the vanilla and beat the frosting on medium speed for about 3 minutes. Place one cake on a cake stand. Frost the top of the cake with a thick layer of frosting. Repeat with the other two cakes. Spread the frosting thin to achieve a naked cake look and garnish with blackberries. Store the cake in the refigerator until service.

EASY HOLIDAY STUFFING INGREDIENTS: 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 small onion, finely diced 4 cups cubed butternut squash 1 tablespoon brown sugar 4 to 5 cups baby bella and crimini mushrooms, sliced 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons fresh sage 2 tablespoons fresh oregano 1 tablespoon fresh thyme 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1 teaspoons salt & pepper 1 stick of butter 4 cups low sodium chicken broth 3 eggs 1 loaf day old sourdough bread, cubed (about 12 cups) 1 cup Asiago cheese, grated 1 cup of California Giant blackberries

DIRECTIONS: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add the olive oil, onion, butternut squash and brown sugar. Cook, stirring often until the butternut squash has softened slightly and the onions are fragrant, about 5 minutes.
