BRIDAL HEADWEAR Bridal trends and fashions change with the wind, but headwear and accessories are ever present in the stylish bride’s wardrobe. From veils to fascinators and everything in-between, bridal headwear can complete your bridal look. There are many options from the traditional veil to a wreath of flowers. A growing favorite, especially for outdoor weddings is flower crowns or wreaths. They’re stunning headwear alternatives, and many brides are adding extras such as berries and pinecones to create more seasonal looks. Tiaras and crowns are something of the go-to bridal accessory for anyone wishing for a fairytale wedding. It is such a pretty and romantic piece of jewelry, they will always be a favorite. Headbands are a popular option. It can be thick or thin, simple or ornate. Jeweled headbands are beautiful and complement any bridal look. More delicate than a tiara or a headband, and often overlooked, is a circlet. Usually worn across the forehead, these are elegant and beautiful bridal headwear pieces that make gorgeous jewelry alternatives. Combs and pins remain a popular choice and are particularly common with brides who wear their hair in a pretty up-do on the big day. Clips can be used far more broadly, with any hairstyle, and any theme. Headpieces come in such a huge array of styles, and some brides enjoy going off the beaten track a little bit by using statement hairpieces like elaborate headdresses, fascinators and brooches, and even hats, caps, and hair wraps. Don’t feel like you have to choose one thing or another. As long as you don’t try to put too many accessories onto your head you can mix and match different hairpieces for a unique and beautiful look. It’s quite popular to wear a piece of jewelry, like a hair comb or tiara, with a veil, and it’s not uncommon to see a flower crown paired with a veil too.

MAID OF HONOR & BEST MAN
Do’s & Don’ts
Someone close to you has become engaged and asked you to be in the wedding. Not to just be in the wedding but to be the Maid of Honor or the Best Man! That is a tall order. The bride or groom has asked you because you are special to them and because you can handle the responsibility. This position of honor can be loaded with a lot of work and responsibility as well as a lot of fun. It is a big job but with focus and calm, you can help to make this day a memorable one for all involved.
The big day is here! Set a specific place for wedding day prep. Make sure everyone knows when to show up. Provide snacks and beverages. If one of the beverages is champagne, make sure everyone has snacks so no one is stumbling down the aisle!
It’s the maid/matron of honor’s and Best Man’s job to direct the wedding party through their duties. Make sure everyone gets information on shopping, fitting appointments and choosing the right jewelry. Usually the wedding party pays for their own dress or suit, including shoes.
Your job is not done after the ceremony. Traditionally the Best Man and sometimes the Maid of Honor give a speech honoring the bride and groom.
Lend an ear. Whether it’s about the planning, the marriage, or the registry china patterns, you should assure the bride or groom that you are always available to listen. The Maid of Honor plans the bridal shower. Get together with the wedding party and the bride and pick a date that works for everyone. Pick a date, choose décor and food (luncheon? appetizers?), pick games, and you have a party!
The bride and groom want to look their best before they stand at the wedding spot or walk down the aisle. Be focused on making sure they do.
Your speech should be long enough to say what you want to say and no longer. Try to keep the toast between 2 and 4 minutes; most people won’t have patience for anything over 5 minutes. More often than not, a couple has to pay (or at least tip) their officiant and other vendors the day of the wedding. Ask the couple if they need you to do this and remind them to bring the payments a few days before the wedding. Don’t just hand over cash; put the money in an envelope.
Planning the bachelor or bachelorette party is up to the Maid of Honor and Best Man. There are no rules. Some couples even combine them. Usually the month before the wedding, it can be a quiet dinner or a weekend trip.
At some point on the wedding day, you will have to sign the marriage license, making the marriage official. This typically happens right after, so don’t wander off once the couple says “I do.” (And if the officiant doesn’t bring it up during the rehearsal, go ahead and ask.)
Make sure everyone knows where and when the wedding rehearsal and the activities following are.
It’s a big job being the Maid of Honor and the Best Man. The most important part of the job--have fun!

RECEPTION DECORATION TRENDS In the world of wedding reception trends, things are constantly changing, evolving, and starting anew. Want to be in the know? Read on… GARDEN GREENERY An outdoor wedding is a beautiful idea. Unfortunately, it isn’t always practical. Depending on the time of year, an outdoor wedding could mean having to move it all indoors at the last minute. So why not bring your love of the outdoors inside and not have to worry about the weather! Incorporating flowers and greenery to make the inside feel more like outside starts with choosing the style you are looking for. Succulents, orchids, ivy, the list goes on and on. Once you’ve made your choices, go crazy! Depending on the shape of the tables, centerpieces made with lots of greenery, flowers, and candles (make sure the centerpieces are very short or very tall on a round table so the guests can see each other!) will set the tone. Flowing a garland all the way down a rectangle table onto the floor is a popular trend right now. You can even offer small pots of succulents as a favor to your guests. Your flora theme can bring a little of the outdoors indoors!

PAPER Whether it’s in floral bouquets or in your wedding décor, incorporating paper into your special day is quickly growing in popularity — and for good reason. Economical, eco-friendly and unique in any way you use it, paper can be an elegant and colorful way to decorate. Small paper lanterns can be beautiful centerpieces and can also be used outdoors to light up a path in the dark(luminaries). Paper chains (yes, the same ones from kindergarten!) are not made with construction paper anymore but can create a beautiful blingy backdrop when made with metallic paper and hung vertically on a wall. If you’re looking for whimsy, add some brightly colored paper flowers to brighten things up. There are so many awesome new types of paper that the possibilities will make your head spin! Matte, shiny, metallic, print… Think outside of the box! continued on page 12 10

BIGGER IS BETTER Getting married in a big indoor venue such as a barn or event hall? Trees and large plants are becoming a popular option to turn a drab venue into a forest wonderland. Placed in strategic areas large plants or trees will transform even the plainest looking wall area into a something that will your guests will never forget. Most event planning companies offer different sizes of trees and plants for decoration. If this is a DIY project, call around to local nurseries. They can help you out with rentals. Another good idea for big dĂŠcor is using furniture. A drab wall can be turned into a place for your guests to hang out when you use an antique sideboard for the dessert table. Furniture placed in a large venue can be used to create sitting areas, hold favors, table assignments, and pictures of the bride and groom as they traveled their journey of love!
LOOK UP! While you’re thinking about what your wedding reception theme will be, don’t forget about the ceiling. An artistic ceiling decoration plays an important role in setting the tone of the event. Sometimes the wedding venues have roughlooking ceilings that need to be covered up. For that you must look for some creative and unique wedding ceiling decoration ideas. Using ceiling draping is the most traditional way of ceiling decoration. Satin, shimmer organza, and gossamer are popular choices of fabric. These drapes can be accented with many accessories, including twinkling lights, especially for an evening reception. Ribbon chandeliers are also becoming popular. A luxurious chandelier can be a pricey option, but hanging delicate sparkling lights from a hula hoop can give the same gleaming and dazzling effect in lesser price. Hang the hula hoop horizontally, wrap with ribbon, greenery, and lights. Beautiful! Give a rustic and romantic ambiance to your reception with a variety of lanterns, geometric lanterns, Moroccan lanterns or bottles with candles hanging from your ceiling.
RUSTIC Barn weddings call for rustic decorations. Burlap table runners are a great way to show off your beautiful centerpieces which can be anything from wooden rectangle boxes filled with succulents to rows of candles in tree branch holders with greenery in between. Use small tin buckets to hold utensils at the buffet table or confetti for the guests to throw as the bride and groom leave the reception. Small thin-cut logs split the middle make a cute holder for table cards. You can purchase rustic looking trays and cake rounds to decorate a dessert table. Use small chalkboards to label each dessert. Throw some sawdust on the floor! Take a look around as you plan your reception and you will be amazed at what you can find to use for your rustic look! 12

Bride & Groom
Gift Exchange
There is one last but very important detail, yes… you have one more gift to buy. The wedding day gift exchange. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make it really meaningful. However, it is important to put thought and love into the bride and groom gift exchange. To help you pick or create the perfect gift here are some great ideas! Whether you want to spend a little or a lot, be fun or romantic, serious or silly, buy or DIY, there is something for every bride and groom.
- Groom to Bride -
A message on the bottom of her shoes.
Steal her bridal shoes and use a Sharpie to write a sentimental saying “As we share this journey from beginning to end, I’m so happy to marry my best friend,” or any sweet phrase that will make her happy.
Little gifts on your big day. The littlest things can share the love. Have her favorite coffee delivered to her in the morning, send flowers, have her bridesmaids randomly supply her with candy, send her loving text messages, provide her with a box with a note and memorable photo of when you first started dating. She’s going to be feeling nervous, stressed, tired, excited, and so many other emotions! You know her better than anyone else so make sure she has these special moments to love every second of your big day.
Things that sparkle. A bracelet, a pair of earrings, a ring (not her wedding ring), a necklace…something special. Jewelry is a great gift, especially when you’ve put some thought into it and it is meaningful.
Anything that says Mr. & Mrs. or “Mrs.” on it. You’ll find jewelry, T-shirts, coffee mugs, and so much more out there. Shop from trusted artists on Etsy and make sure you order anything custom-made well in advance.
- Bride to Groom -
A watch.
Get him that fancy timepiece he’s always wanted! Attach a little note to it that says, “See you at 5:00,” or whatever time you’re saying “I do.”
Cozy socks. Help him out with his “cold feet”— Buy the groom and the groomsmen a few funky pairs and give them to the guys! You’ll love the photos.

Video messages from loved ones.
Come up with the list of people who mean the world to your fiancé and think of a few questions you can ask each of them: What do you love most about your fiancé? What’s the secret to a happy marriage? = What’s the best or funniest memory they have with your fiancé? = =
Once you’ve received all the videos, use a simple movie editor to create a compilation. Set up a special wedding day viewing—before your fiancé starts getting and watch the tears flow!

A new signature scent. Buy them a fresh bottle of perfume or cologne. The smell will always remind them of the day they married you! Check out Perfumers in Scotts Valley!
Creative art. It could be their favorite print, something that’ll fit perfectly in your new home, or even a custom-made piece. My Favorite: Are they obsessed with their pet (soon to be yours, too)? Have a portrait taken with you and his or her pet.
Sports gear. What about their favorite team jersey with their new last name?
Tickets I love gifting experiences. Take them to a movie, sporting event, concert, or maybe zip lining through the redwoods
Liquor + engraved glasses. A little liquid courage never hurt anyone! Buy them their favorite drink and a few personalized glasses to go with it.
“Open when…” letters. Write a collection of letters that your spouse will open at special moments throughout your marriage… Open when we have our first big fight. Open when our marriage turns 1. = Open when we buy our first home. = Open when we have our first child. = Open when you miss me. = Open when we move. = Open when we have our second child. = Open when our kids leave the nest. = Open when we retire. = =

Sparkle!
ADD SOME
Want to add some sparkle to your wedding? Well then get ready to integrate metallic in your wedding and reception! Shiny metallic colors are all the rage these days. Whether its gold, silver, or bronze, this color trend has us begging for more blinged-out wedding accents and decor. What vibe does adding metallic into your palette create? Sophisticated, modern, or cool? It could be all of these, depending upon how you use it. Gold can be an elegant accent color when used in
conjunction with a soft color or cream/ivory tones. When using it with stronger colors like red and purple, it can be very dramatic. The use of matte silver can be elegant, whereas a concentrated use of a shiny silver can lend itself to a modern, edgy look. The shape and style of gold or silver accent pieces need to directly correlate to one’s overall vision. A bride looking for that industrial, modern look will often use more “architectural” metallic pieces, such as a linear, cool-shaped vessel, while the bride looking to create a soft, romantic environment may be drawn to different continued on page 28

vessels altogether. For those looking for more of a vintage look, metallic items like silver mercury glass have become increasingly popular. Using metallic with softer colors like blush tones or ivory can be sophisticated and elegant, while using a more concentrated metallic or crystal accents can make a big statement that changes the entire environment. Swarovski crystals hanging from the ceiling over the dance floor are dramatic and it will be the first thing people notice when they enter the room because the whole area will sparkle. It is definitely a wow! How are people using this trendy splash? Pops of metallic can be incorporated into everything from the printed materials (invitations, place cards, table numbers, and menu cards) to table decor, such as silver or gold mercury glass vases, votive candles, and candelabras. You can add it anywhere. There have been allgold utensils, shimmery bridesmaids’ dresses, wedding dress details, shoes, dance floor squares—or borders, cakes, table linens, chairs, and more! A pop of silver sparkle can be added to a wedding dress, too, for a fabulous, playful detail that catches one’s eye as the bride walks down the aisle.
Where are some of your favorite places to add metallic accents? Think metallic chargers on the guest tables. It’s like the jewelry that finishes off the place settings. The shimmer of metallic bridesmaids’ gowns are sophisticated and elegant. Bronze or gold ink for a monogram on printed materials, such as a menu card or on a cocktail napkin, can also add to the elegance. Using an antique gold or a matte silver results in a softer, more elegant look, while a shiny, bold metallic reads, let’s party! With metallic less is more. If the metallic is muted, there are ways of “layering” it in an understated way. Using a bronze metallic cloth with a stunning silvery/bronze charger plate, can look spectacular. The key is pairing a muted metallic with one that sparkles. I think that if one is going with shiny metallic, it should be the accent, so it doesn’t begin to look too ornate. While tons of sparkle is fun for a party, a lot of brides want their weddings to feel soft and romantic, so it’s important to find just the right balance between elegance and fun. What are some other colors that work well with metallic? There are so many! Ivory or winter white and gold are gorgeous together, and blush tones like soft peach, soft pink, soft mint green, etc., look amazing with metallic accents. While softer tones with metallic accents for weddings are beautiful, the use of stronger color with tons of bling can be equally fabulous. Another fun accent are disco balls! They can take change the entire ambience of a room, adding shimmer to the most ordinary venue if used appropriately. If a bride is trying to be subtle, I would suggest using gold, silver or bronze simply as an accent— but if bling is your thing, go really big!

CENTRAL COAST WEDDING VENUES
As winter turns to spring, couples will be joined together in marriage throughout the Central Coast. Some are locals, while others are out-of-towners attracted by the region’s natural splendor and coastal charm. The Central Coast’s unique reputation for diversity, even eccentricity, is proving to be the magnet that is drawing romantics from all walks of life. While many brides want the wedding nuptials they’ve carried with them since childhood, their dream may be radically different from conventional ceremonies of the past. No problem. This community can accommodate the most eclectic visions of wedding splendor. Many receptions and weddings are still held in traditional spots such as country clubs and reception halls, but an adventurous percent choose to celebrate in the towering redwoods or atop a cliff, ocean view or beachfront all are waiting to host your big day. The growing base of wedding consultants and companies that cater to weddings demonstrates the Central Coast’s ability to compete with any big city when it comes to orchestrating a memorable event. Wedding service providers of all sorts are seeing their businesses grow. Many brides and grooms are from Silicon Valley and the Bay Area and are choosing to travel to this area to take advantage of the natural beauty and unique sites. The Central Coast is in demand because of its natural beauty and the experience the community offers is friendly and accommodating.
40
wedding Coastal
| WINTER-SPRING 2017
Brides and grooms are flocking to the Central Coast for the weather. A large majority of weddings and receptions in the area are held outdoors, an element that can also mean less expensive ceremonies. Popular options are spacious backyards in local homes, which can easily host a smaller guest list, while local country clubs, resorts and hotels are also in high demand. This area abounds with creative solutions guaranteed to make it a day to remember. These types of alternatives are important when one considers the growing number of couples who don’t have lavish sums set aside for their wedding, nor the fortunate option of doting parents who can foot the bill. Some people may still be laboring under the misconception that the amount of money spent is directly proportionate to how much you love each other. That fallacy needs to be put to rest. Your wedding is a time to honor the union of a loving couple as you embark on a new life together. Your wedding is what you make it. A Central Coast wedding can be many things. It can be simple affair with family and friends celebrating the union amidst the natural splendor of a towering redwood forest, or a barefoot bacchanal on the sands of a pristine beach. Above all, it is a celebration of the coastal beauty that makes this region unique, and a celebration of the love that has brought you together in marriage.

BACHELORETTE
! s e i t Par
Once the invitations are sent, you can look forward to planning the little details, like decorations in the hotel rooms, personalized T-shirts or totes for your guests, mini champagne bottles for each girl and more. Make it a party you’ll always remember. Hitting the bar and dancing the night away are no longer the only bonding activities for bachelorette groups. From yoga classes and golf outings to wine and chocolate pairings, brides-to-be are looking for more diverse, sophisticated activities they can do with their girlfriends.
Bachelorette parties are as unique as the women they celebrate. An emphasis on relaxation for the bride and companionship with her friends is the trend for today’s bachelorette parties. Brides want to spend their special time - and often an entire weekend - in a soothing, stress-free atmosphere before the hectic pace of their wedding day. With the help of her maid of honor, a bride can plan a bachelorette party tailored to her tastes. Knowing the bride’s hobbies and interests, the maid of honor and the bridesmaids can also plan the party and surprise the bride with their plans! Be creative, even with budget constraints, anything is possible.
Don’t schedule the party too far in front of the big day, but don’t wait until the last minute, either. A good time frame is anywhere from six weeks to a month before the wedding. Forget the whole night-before-the-wedding thing. Save that for the rehearsal dinner. Nothing worse than being over-tired on a day you know you’ll spend being the center of attention and being photographed.
Whether it’s a group mani-pedi, a yoga class, or a lunch of delicious, healthful spa cuisine, bachelorette groups love spa time. Parties are looking for spas that offer a comprehensive list of salon services, such as massage and facials. Playing to this trend, many resorts have created special spa packages tailored to bachelorette parties. Who says a bachelorette party must be at night? Meet at your favorite brunch place for good food, unlimited mimosas, and fun conversation. Wine tasting is a great idea if the festivities must take place in one day. Hire someone to drive, have a scrumptious lunch, taste some wine, and relax. A fun and budget-friendly option is to rent a karaoke room, go to a crowded local karaoke bar, or rent a karaoke machine for an at home singing festival! Provide music note shaped cupcakes, decorate with records and CDs hung as banners and along the walls. Make music the central idea of the party.
It’s traditional bachelorette party etiquette to cover costs for the bride-to-be. This can vary, but in most cases, the guests will pay for meals, cocktails, and special celebrations for the soon to be bride. If you are planning a destination bachelorette party, the guests should pay for their own flights and hotels. No matter where the party will be, break down the expenses and give your guests the price for the whole celebration at once. Try to do this far in advance so all guests have the opportunity to save money if need be. If everyone pays in advance, that frees them up to have a blast and not worry about money. 42

| WINTER-SPRING 2017
Some bridal parties don’t want to go crazy for a bachelorette party, they just want to enjoy time with their friends. Perhaps it’s because their lives are about to change dramatically. Whatever their reasons, a growing number of brides are looking for a bachelorette experience that transports them and their closest friends far away from their daily routines. Some fulfill this wish by choosing a resort location far from home. Others may choose accommodations that are more intimate. Whatever you choose for your bachelorette party make it an unforgettable experience. Take lots of photos, grab some souvenirs, and most of all, have fun!
