JORDYN & BRANDEN

BOHUSLAV

Married October 05, 2019 The Loft at Stone Oak with reception following Jordyn’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Dirk Pulliam. Braden’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Gary Mark Bohuslav.

HOW WE MET: Branden “Boh” and I met in college. Once upon a time, we were both living the college life. Boh claims to have seen me from afar on campus and at several social events, yet it wasn’t until about a year later we actually met. It was a hot summer night, days before fall classes started, when we first ran into each other at a college gathering. As I walked into the gathering- not realizing my strength (haha)- I slung the door open forcefully. Someone was standing behind the door, and the door had hit them HARD. Filled with guilt, I pulled the door back to apologize to whoever I had hit. Little did I know, behind the door was the most amazing surprise I could have ever imagined. Standing behind the door was my future husband and love of my life. I don’t regret hitting him with the door because it would, eventually, be the start of something wonderful and unexpected. We started talking, and the rest is history. THE PROPOSAL: Originally, Boh

planned on proposing to me in Colorado when we went on our annual ski trip. Unfortunately, I am impossible to surprise, and he was extremely impatient. I had a feeling that he was going to propose in Colorado. In mid-October, Boh picked up the ring, and, soon, it was burning a hole in his pocket. Most proposals are elaborately planned out, but he knew that in order for it to be a surprise, he would have to plan a last-minute engagement. Boh decided the night before how and where he was going to propose to me. He decided to propose at a beautiful creek hidden within a valley in which I originally fell in love with him. Originally, he was supposed to have baseball practice the weekend he proposed, but it was cancelled last minute, so he decided to come visit me (we were in a semilong-distance relationship). When he arrived at my house, he asked if I wanted to visit the creek the next day to fish and take pictures. I had been begging him all Fall to take colorful fall pictures, so it was nothing suspicious to me. The next day we packed

our things and headed to the hidden creek. Each fishing and hiking trip, we collect a rock or pebble as a keepsake. As soon as we got to the creek, Boh said to me “be on the lookout for the perfect rock.” We walked along the creek where we eventually came to a beautiful opening where there was an island of pebbles. Boh said to me, “well, Jordyn, I found the perfect rock for today.” Then and there, he got down on one knee and proposed to me.

OUR WEDDING DAY: This day. Our wedding day was a blur of pure bliss and happiness. It was the perfect day in every way possible- as if it was straight from a dream. Not only did we get to marry the love of our lives, but we were surrounded by family and friends from every season of our lives. There are about a million things I could say about this day. After all the years of waiting and wondering when the day might come, I was curious how I would feel when our wedding day finally arrived. As significant as getting married was to us, it also felt like the most natural thing in the world because we couldn’t imagine doing life without each other. Here we are, months after our wedding day, and we still feel like we are on cloud nine. Magical is the only word to describe the day. We were surrounded all day by everything and everyone we love. Most importantly, at the end of the day, I got to go home with a smokin’ hot new husband. OUR HONEYMOON: Aloha! Boh and I chose Hawaii for our honeymoon. We both wanted a place where we could relax, but also where there were plenty of opportunities for island activities and exploration. It was absolutely beautiful and nothing short of magical. We visited two island- Maui and Oahu. We spent every other day on Maui relaxing and enjoying the beauty of the island. On the days in between relaxation days, we drove the road to Hana where we explored hidden waterfalls, private sand beaches, blowholes, and the garden of Eden. In the middle of the night we drove to the top of Haleakala to watch the sunrise over the Maui volcanic valley. Of course, we also had to attend a traditional Hawaiian luau. After six days on Maui, we took a short flight to Oahu. On Oahu, we explored the lush green valley and exquisite mountains of Kualoa Ranch. We ended the trip by chartering a bass boat and guide to take us peacock bass fishing at the freshwater reservoir. We already can’t wait to go back for our 5- or 10-year anniversary.

HOMETOWN HERO: WHOLEHEARTED AND HUMBLE

By Scott Cutlip CONTRIBUTING WRITER

PHIL HICKS If you want to know something about the good works that Phil Hicks does, possibly the worst thing you could do is ask him about them. According to Hicks, there was always somebody else doing the heavy lifting, someone else who needed credit, someone else who really turned things around, someone in the “younger generation, and they’re just making it flourish.” And there are multiple members of the Greenwood who might fall into any of these categories, but it’s hard to diminish what Phil Hicks has done. Unless you’re Phil Hicks. Luckily, his wife of over 25 years, Teri, is there to keep focus on him. “If it’s within his power, he’s gonna do it,” she said. “He’s going to help anybody. If somebody needs something for the school, he’s going to get it. He’s got a very big heart. And he will give to anybody. He’ll give the shirt off his back if somebody needs it. He’s just a very selfless person.”

Greenwood Life

Although Hicks is not a Greenwood native, it has long been his hometown, and he considers the two of them linked. Hicks was born in Ozark in 1958, briefly moved to Fort Smith during first grade, and then spent four years in New York after his mother remarried. He

moved back to Arkansas in 1973. That’s when he came to Greenwood, graduating from Greenwood High School in 1977. After high school, Hicks attended Westark for a few years, then joined his father in training thoroughbreds, traveling around the country until the mid 1980s, before he came back to Greenwood. He started working at Shelter Insurance in 1990. Hicks and Teri had been high school sweethearts, but had gone in different directions after graduation (Teri graduated a year after Hicks). She served in the Air Force for 14 years. After her discharge, they reconnected. They married in 1994. What Hicks might be known for more than anything is his attendance at Bulldog football games on Friday nights on the north end zone. Since 1988 he has been behind the spirit cannon, setting it off at the end of each game and when the Bulldogs score, as well at the final game of the year for the ninth graders. The cannon can be heard from miles away. The cannon used to fire mortars, but since 9/11, it uses gun powder with no projectiles. Operating the cannon has caused Hicks to need hearing aids in both ears. According to Hicks,

his doctor said the symptoms were similar to those suffered by military members who work with artillery. “There were days when we first started when there weren’t a lot of shots,” Hicks said. “In the mid 90s, that’s when the program started changing. And, of course, when Rick [Jones] got here, that’s when it just went. It’s become a family atmosphere on Fridays because Teri’s right there by my side. I’ve got some of our best friends come and help me. It’s just something different. We’re Greenwood; we’re not like everybody else. That’s what makes us Greenwood.” If the cannon were the only thing Hicks was known for, to many Greenwood residents, that would be plenty--a ritual of history and celebration that fathers might have seen from the field and now watch from the stands. But it is not all that Hicks is known for.

wood Bulldog Foundation, which provides financial support to Greenwood sports teams, defraying costs normally borne solely by the schools. Hicks has also been the president of the Chamber of Commerce two times. At one point, Teri was also the president. One of the things Hicks said he is most proud of during his time with the Chamber of Commerce was taking it to what it is today. A previous president of the Chamber, Jerry Efurd, handed him a file box. “That was the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce,” Hicks said. Soon, the Chamber was able to move into a building given to them, which the members spent much of their time painting and fixing up. The Chamber of

Commerce once housed in a file box now has over 125 members (includes Hicks, although he no longer serves on the board). Both Hicks and Teri were inducted into the Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame in 2018. Hicks was also selected as the Chamber’s Citizen of the Year in 2013. One of the things Hicks is proudest of is participating with his son Justin in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. There were 11 boys in the Boy Scouts troop in Justin’s fifth grade year; by the time those 11 were seniors, nine of them were Eagle Scouts. Hicks has also served as a justice of the peace. He’s participated in National Night Out.

Football has been a large part of Hicks’s life. In addition to firing the cannon, he’s been involved with Little League football, starting as a coach when his son Justin was playing. At one point, Hicks oversaw the entire Little League field, including three teams (there are now two) from each grade from third to sixth. Hicks also credited Greenwood High coach Rick Jones with fostering the little league teams, as well as providing pad camps for them with other high school coaches. Hicks also serves as president of the GreenMcCONNELL FUNERAL HOME IS PROUD TO SUPPORT OUR HOMETOWN HERO’S.

He’s talked to students in driver’s education courses and discuss insurance. Phil Hicks Shelter Insurance has been a sponsor to innumerous Greenwood activities. Asked what prompts them to sponsor something, Teri replied, “someone asks.” One goal Hicks hasn’t reached is getting the Scott-Sebastian County Library to grow in size. “We went there in high school,” Teri said, “that same building, and that was 40 plus years ago.” “We need one at least three times that size,” Hicks said, “just based on the per capita of our county. Our kids deserve that.” Hicks credits his success to Teri. “I don’t know too many couples that work side by side five days a week,” he said. “We’re involved in different things, and we feed off each other. I am so blessed to have her, my kids, and my grandkids. I have this community. I have a great business. She’s my driving force.”

Hicks and Teri have six children. Although the four oldest are his stepchildren, both he and Teri say that they never look at it like that, only that all the children are their children. Jennie, 39, runs J. Walker Salon in Fort Smith and J. Walker Studio in Greenwood, next to Hicks’s Shelter Insurance. Kelli, 37, is an ICU cardiac nurse at Mercy. David, 35, is the president of a chemical engineering firm in Colorado. Justin, 32, serves in the Air Force as a flight engineer on Air Force Two. Hannah, 31, is a customer service representative in South Carolina. Kelsey, 30, works in radiology in Virginia. There are also six grandchildren, ranging from 7 to 20. Hicks has no future plans to retire, although he said he would like to be able to fish more. And while he says he will willingly step aside and let the younger generation continue to step up in community involvement, there appears little chance he will step away from the cannon.

Ollar Honored

with DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses Torie Ollar, RN, of Baptist HealthFort Smith, was recently honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The daughter of a patient who was in the Intensive Care Unit at Baptist Health-Fort Smith nominated Ollar for her dedication to the patient’s comfort and for supporting the family through a difficult time. Ollar says it was her own experience in the hospital that actually inspired her to become a nurse. At a young age, she had to undergo several knee surgeries, but experienced amazing care from nurses and physical therapists. The Greenwood native joined Baptist Health-Fort Smith in 2015 as a patient care assistant in the ICU after graduating from Greenwood High School. She later graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UA Fort Smith in December of 2018. “I fell in love with working in health care and the difference we’re able to make in the lives of our patients,” Ollar

said. “I knew from then on that I was supposed to be a nurse.” Ollar was recognized by her colleagues and Baptist Health-Fort Smith’s Vice President of Patient Care and Chief Nursing Executive Stephanie Whitaker. She received a congratulatory banner to be hung in her unit until the next award is given, a plaque and DAISY pin, and a “Healer’s Touch” sculpture handcrafted in Zimbabwe. The goal of the DAISY Foundation’s program is to inspire nurses to provide exemplary care and applaud them for their compassion and skill. Patients and their family members can nominate nurses who they feel deserve recognition for their outstanding care. Nomination letters can be placed in designated DAISY Award dropoff boxes throughout the hospital or mailed to Baptist Health-Fort Smith, Attn: Kristi Lokey, Clinical Research, 1001 Towson Avenue, Fort Smith, AR 72901.

RICHARD MCKINNEY IS GREENWOOD’S OWN

MULTI-TALENTED

PROTECTOR STORY BY

Scott Smith

PHOTOGRAPHY BY

Sharla Derry

When Greenwood resident Richard McKinney married his best friend, Sandra Gann, back in 1975, the two were handcuffed together and vowed to live happily ever after. Richard held Sandra “hostage” as a playful prank that made everyone at the wedding reception smile and laugh. In reality, Richard didn’t have to force his high school sweetheart to say, “I do.” Proof of Sandra’s willingness to become Richard’s wife can be seen in a faded family photograph that shows Sandra holding a bouquet, wearing a wedding dress and tilting her head a little to the right. Her veil and broad smile frame her eyes, which are looking directly at the camera. Richard, clean-shaven and wearing his U.S. Air Force military uniform, is seen a couple steps ahead, his eyes glancing down and his hand gently holding onto Sandra’s fingers. He remembers that moment as if it happened yesterday. The memory always makes him smile. “She worked at the L&J Drive-In here in Greenwood at that time, and the owner Larry Williams, said he wasn’t going to let her go,” Richard said with a laugh. “It was the only drive-in restaurant at the time — it predated Sonic and all of the others — and Larry didn’t want Sandra to go.” There’s an age-old saying that goes, “Everyone has a story,” and Richard’s life seemingly wouldn’t disappoint the creator of that saying. The 64-year-old man has added many titles and descriptions to his life — high school football player, military veteran, OSI special agent, firefighter, parks director, husband, father of two children, grandfather of five, community volunteer, award winner, VFW commander, world traveler and fundraising committee chairman are among the many that are attached to his name.

RIGHT: Flag etiquette is very important to McKinney. He takes every opportunity to teach young people the proper way to display, handle and dispose of our National Flag.

The son of Oscar “O.B.” and Betty McKinney, Richard was born near Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. He is the middle child with four siblings, and among his favorite childhood memories are when his family would visit the Greenwood area. “Our family has roots going back pre-Civil War here; we had family here, and we moved here to Greenwood back in 1967,” Richard said. “My father was Air Force, and before, we had lived in the Azores Islands in Portugal, Bunker Hill Air Force Base in Indiana, and later, in Morocco.” As a child, Richard often found moving to be exciting. He remembers the Arabic classes he took in first grade, as well as the family trips up into the Atlas Mountains to catch the sights of snow and cold running streams. Richard and his family later lived in Lincoln, Neb., before moving to Greenwood.

“Our old family home here in Greenwood was at the top of Old Hackett Road,” he said. Unfortunately, after Richard’s family had remodeled their home, it found its way in the path of the brutal 1968 tornado. “I wasn’t home at the time of the tornado; I was at school,” Richard said before using his hands to mimic the tornado’s affect on the house. “The tornado picked up the house, turned it around and then dropped it back down on the foundation. The tornado broke everything in the house. Thankfully, there were no injuries with us.” Richard admits to some people that he acted a bit like a “class clown,” which led to him and then-principal Raymond Wells getting to know each other well. Richard claims he was “just an average student.” He harbors fond memories of his school years, recall-

ing how he was fortunate to be on winning football teams during his school years in Greenwood. “I played defensive and offensive end, and back then, when the first whistle would blow, you were there in the game the entire time; there wasn’t any resting,” said Richard, who made All-District Team during his junior year and became a member of the Greenwood High School Hall of Fame as a senior. “We were actually H.B. Stewart’s only undefeated team. I didn’t know that until I heard that at his funeral.” Richard graduated with about 80 other seniors from Greenwood High School in 1973 and, in October of that year, joined the U.S. Air Force. He became an Air Force electrician and greeted each new assignment with enthusiasm and a hunger to learn. “I enjoyed school here, but I couldn’t wait to join the military; I was excited to go,” said Richard, who also

attended the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith when it was known as Westark Community College. “My folks had raised me in the way that said, that’s just what we do. You go out there, make your way and take responsibilities as soon as you can, so when I turned 18, I did that.” Richard eventually became a special agent for the Air Force’s Office of Special Investigations, taking part in numerous top-secret investigations and other projects. He was named the OSI Agent of the Year in Europe in 1987. “It was kind of like the equivalent of CSI and CID, and I did felony investigations and counterintelligence,” said Richard, who served in the Desert Shield and Desert Storm military operations and obtained the rank of master sergeant before retiring from the military. “We would investigate generals and perform other duties, and I really can’t talk about the details. “But it was quite the job,” he added. “We also did Secret Service-type work — we actually worked with the Secret Service — and protected 4-star generals in the Air Force.” Richard also spent his time as a private investigator and construction superintendent, and he currently serves as the commander for the VFW Post No. 6527 in Greenwood. “I’ve always stayed busy,” said Richard, who also served as the parks director for Greenwood from 2014-2017 and is vice chairman for the VFW Western Arkansas Veterans Coalition. “I enjoy staying active.” Richard found himself putting his time and skills into serving as a paid, part-time firefight-

er in Greenwood. He also worked as a volunteer of the Excelsior/Mt. Zion/Palestine (EMP) Rural Fire Department, and was the recipient of the Greenwood Firefighter of the Year Award and the Sebastian County First Responder of the Year Award, both in 2011. When asked if he helped save the life of while working as a firefighter, Richard remained quiet for a few seconds. “In this area, you don’t really keep track of numbers, because if you start counting the ones you saved, then you have to also count the ones who didn’t make it,” he said. “I really didn’t count, but I would say that I do hope that we were able to help people.”

Greenwood Makes a

DISNEY WISH COME TRUE

First-grader, Julissa Hernandez, is surprised with a Make-a-Wish The doors to the gymnasium at East Hills Middle School opened, and Julissa Hernandez stepped through. Almost as one voice the students and faculty exclaimed, “Julissa, you’re going to Disney World!” The then-six-year-old had a princess crown affixed to her head and walked down a red carpet to sit in a chair that acted as her throne, all the way looking around with not-quite-believing eyes. The Fort Smith first grader, who turned 7 on December 18, had been waiting for this occasion for a while. In April of 2017, she was diagnosed with leukemia. While she received treatment at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, a social worker talked to her family about the opportunity to have Julissa have a Make-aWish.

Julissa’s parents didn’t want her to go while she was receiving treatment. She received her last treatment in October, and then the wheels were sent in motion. On November 22, students gathered in the auditorium, waiting for Julissa’s arrival. Sixth grade math teacher Diana Rhea organized

the event. She has also been heavily involved with raising funds in the local area for Make-a-Wish. The first year she started raising funds for Make-a-Wish, she and her students raised $7,000. This last year they raised over $9,000. Their goal for next year is over $10,000. Julissa and her family were able to go to Disney World from December 10 through 16. In addition to Julissa, her parents, Jose and Maribel Hernandez, as well as her brothers, Jovany, 15, and Jonathan, 8. The family stayed at Give Kids the World Village, an 84-acre resort at Disney World, which has 166 villa accommodations, all at no cost to the family. The resort has housed over 167,000 families from every state and 76 countries. “We’re amazed, because they did everything for us,” Maribel said. “We had a great time. We had tickets for the park and tickets for everything. Because my daughter loves it. She wore a yellow dress like her favorite, Belle.” Treatment has sometimes been difficult for Julissa. Although her chemotherapy ended

in October, she has still experienced some rashes on her face and pain in her body, which the doctor said is a consequence from the chemotherapy. She now checks in monthly with Dr. Saylors at Arkansas Children’s Northwest. Maribel feels like if anybody were to deserve a wish like this, it is Julissa. “She’s smart, brave, and very active,” Maribel said. “She’s kind with a lot of empathy for everyone. She is very caring.” The trip to Orlando was a blessing for the family, and for Julissa, in particular. “It’s been stressful for her all the time when she’s been in the hospital,” Maribel said. “Taking the medicine was hard for her. Sometimes she doesn’t feel good, but this was a great time. She could forget a little bit about the medicine, hospitals, and everything, and she really enjoyed it. I saw her very happy all the time. Everybody had a good time.” In addition to enjoying being in her princess dress, Julissa loved Mickey Mouse and the Frozen show. The wish was made possible by Make-a-Wish Midsouth, located in Memphis. Midsouth grants about 300 wishes a year, in comparison to the roughly 15,000 a year wishes overall (2016 estimate). Half of the wishes a year involve the Walt Disney corporation. In comparison, the most wishes granted by an individual is just over 600 by professional wrestler John Cena, in a 17-year span. “I’m so thankful to Make-a-Wish,” Maribel said. “It was a special time. It’s like a dream. We are very grateful to all the people who made the dream come true.” Make-a-Wish always welcomes donations, which can be given at their site: https://secure2. wish.org/site/SPageServer?pagename=donate_ now&chid=100-000&chapterid=049-000&designation=049-000. There are also offices located in Fayetteville and Little Rock. These offices and others in the country work hard to make sure that children with critical illnesses are able to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime wish.

RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR By Drucilla Hughart

It is hard to believe that another year has past. Where has all the days, weeks, and months gone? It seems as if it was only yesterday that we were ringing in the New Year. Each year I make so many resolutions that I can’t remember them all. Each day I kept thinking tomorrow I will follow through my resolutions and now the year has come to an end and I am still thinking I will start tomorrow. I had pledged to write more letters, make more visits to shutins, be kinder to all I met, forgive those I had some bad thoughts about and be more helpful to those who need me. Where did that tomorrow go? As I began to reflect back to New Year’s past I thought about what an exciting time New Year’s was. It was almost as important as Christmas as we met at the Methodist Church to watch the New Year arrive. We did not get to stay up to watch for Santa Claus to arrive but there was no objection to watching for the New Year. It was if one could really see someone or something arriving. To me it seems that during the Holiday Season the sky is a little

brighter than at any other time of the year. I was looking out the other night and the stars seemed so much bigger and brighter. I have a dear friend who used to belong to another denomination who did not believe in celebrating the Holiday Season, especially Christmas. Their belief was that Christ was not born at this time of year. I know that this has to be the right time because I can feel it. There is something magical about this time of year. The whole world seems brighter. The Watch Party at the church usually started about ten o’clock at night, but this was a special night. The early part of the evening was spent playing such games as Jenny Crack Corn, Musical Chairs, and Put Your Left Foot out and singing songs. My best friend’s Mother wouldn’t let her go with me because she thought the games play at the Methodist Watch Party was dancing and she didn’t want her dancing. We had refreshment of that

wonderful HOT CHOCOLATE made from good, rich milk with a marshmallow floating on the top of the steaming cup that had to be the best refreshment every served. Methodist mothers sure did know how to make hot chocolate. One day I was discussing our good Methodist hot chocolate with the late Mary Lou Young and we decided it must have been the good, rich, whole milk that made the drink so wonderful. As the midnight hour began to approach the excitement began to grow. It had already been decided who would ring the church bell. Suddenly across the clear, cold night the town clock on top of the Court House began to strike the midnight hour. Another New Year was born. Across town one could hear the sound of other church bells, shotguns, firecrackers and on occasion the blast of dynamite in the distance. What a wonderful feeling to know that you had welcomed in another new Year.

and their response seems to be, “What is so special about a cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows floating on top and staying up until midnight to listen to the clock in the tower strike the midnight hour?” Today I just turn on the TV and watch as the ball is dropped in Times Square at midnight. I make myself a cup of powdered hot chocolate by adding a little hot water and I sat back and reminisce about the day of Ringing in the New Year. “Backward, turn backward oh, time in your flight and make me a child again just for tonight.” May your New Year be filled with happy memories and may the New Year hold only the very best for you. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Through the years I have tried to tell my children, grandchildren and my greats about that special hot chocolate
