Molly & Hayden

HARVEY Married October 12, 2019 Outside of the Bell Park Pavilion with inside reception following ceremony Molly and Hayden are currently living in Greenwood. Molly’s parents are Don and LeeAnn Clover from Fort Smith. Hayden’s parents are Steve and Melissa Harvey from Greenwood.

HOW WE MET: Molly and Hayden met through mutual friends in college at University of Arkansas Fort Smith. THE PROPOSAL: Hayden’s parents have a barn house in

Clarksville, AR. We always go down there to fish, hunt, hangout, or help with grandparent’s cows/farm. The whole family went down there one weekend (the guys were going to help Papaw on the farm and the girls were going to a “Pampered Chef ” party that Hayden’s aunt was allegedly hosting. Little did I know, while us girls were getting ready, the guys were setting up the proposal area in one of the fields on the farm. We girls finally were ready to go and we got in the car and headed to the party. We got about 5 minutes down the road and Hayden’s sister said that we needed to go back because we forgot a couple bags that Hayden’s mom needed to return to the store. We went back and when we arrived back at the house, there was a chalkboard in the gravel road with the words “This way to your happily ever after” and an arrow pointing toward the road to the back field. Hayden’s other sister drove me to the back field where I got out and saw an aisle made of haybails and cut logs, with pictures on each one of the logs from our relationship, and rose petals covered the ground all the way down the aisle. When I got to the end I turned to the left and saw Hayden standing in front of a table with more pictures of us and “Marry Me” by Train playing in the background. And the rest is history!

stayed at the barn in Clarksville the night before the wedding. That next morning, my parents brought us chick fil a for breakfast. After hanging out for a bit, the guys and I drove back to my house in greenwood to get ready. They ended up leaving a bit earlier than me to go take pictures and

I followed 20 minutes later or so. After arriving at Bell Park I had to take groomsman, usher, and family pictures. After that us groomsmen hung out in the pavilion watching South Carolina attempt to upset Georgia. One of my favorite parts of the day was meeting Molly around the corner of the building and holding her hand while we prayed together (I didn’t peek). The whole wedding and reception went by very fast, but I couldn’t have asked for a better day. Seeing everyone who showed up and having the support of our families really hit me that day it definitely made me think about how much God has blessed both of our lives! The girls and I (Molly) met at roots hair salon in fort smith. We got ready and hung out and my mom brought us breakfast. Then we headed to bell park for pictures. I was feeling really excited/anxious for everything to start! After the pictures were over, I was sent to my holding area (the dungeon) to wait for the guys pictures to be over. We hung out in there until the wedding started! We were so happy to have the support of our families and all of our closest friends. It was crazy to see how many people came out to support us moving in to this new chapter of our lives! And a special thank you to my dad for making the beautiful arbor used at our ceremony!

HOMETOWN HERO: GREENWOOD’S CROSS-COUNTRY COACH RUNNING THE

By Scott Cutlip CONTRIBUTING WRITER

LONG DISTANCE When Jim Andrews attended Paul Pewitt High School in Omaha, Texas, he was a member of the cross-country team. Perhaps “team” is too great a word for it. There were only three members, and they only had a coach during official meets. Andrews described it as an “activity,” one in which he was good enough to be offered a scholarship. But, he said, his fast times in high school were only average for Texas statewide. Cross country did not appear to be something that would be occupying much time in his life. On November 9, the Lady Bulldogs won the cross-country state championship, with Andrews leading as the coach. The path from Omaha to that had a few twists and turns. Andrews lived in Omaha his entire childhood. His parents moved to Arkansas after Andrews graduated high school in 1992. He

attended East Texas State University for a year before taking time off to get married and work other jobs. Andrews returned to college much later, after his wife had completed her degree. He completed his own degree in Physical Education at Arkansas Tech University in 2004. Andrews married his wife Ruthann in 1994. Ruthann has been a nurse at Mercy Hospital for almost 20 years. They have three children. Alivia, 24, is married and has two children. Izabelle, 18, recently graduated high school and is attending the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. Paige is in the eighth grade and plays volleyball and runs cross country. Andrews taught at Lavaca for two years, and then began at Greenwood in 2007. He’s been the cross-country coach for the last eight years. He is also the assistant track coach. Andrews coaches both the high school and

junior high cross-country teams for both boys and girls. Andrews estimated that there are approximately 50 runners on the cross-country teams. He believes it’s a growing sport, saying that the runners joining in the seventh grade this year has exceeded that of the last three years. The high school girls’ team won the 5A State Championship, based in large part by the performance of Macie Cash, who placed second in the event on November 9. Her teammate, Taylor Koeth, placed fourth. The team’s five racers’ cumulative score was enough to earn them the championship. This year Andrews moved his ninth-grade girls up to the high school team. Doing so, he said, didn’t diminish the effectiveness of the junior high team (ninth grade runners could run for either the junior high team or the high school team, but once they moved up, they aren’t allowed to move back to the other team): both the boys’ and girls’ team won the River Valley conference. The ninth-

grade girls had not lost a meet all year. Andrews said things look good for next year, also. Koeth is the only runner leaving the Lady Bulldogs, as she graduates, and Andrews said there are talented junior highers ready to move up. When asked about what he has contributed to the state championship, Andrews is quick to point back at his runners. He describes them as “a family of runners.” The boys’ and girls’ practice at the same time. There is a paper on the wall in his office that contains goals, first written years ago, such as to start at no later than 3:30, warm up and cool down, and to listen to team leaders. The paper also reads that the team is athlete-centered, not coach-centered, and that runners should interact with three other runners during practice.

Andrews also said he couldn’t do what he has done without the support of Greenwood parents. “They’re huge in helping me make sure kids the practices in, because summertime is a sacrifice,” he said. “We’re working from June through November; that’s our season. And if they don’t put in that work during the summer, they’ll be behind once school starts.” Although it took him some time before he started teaching as a career, and somewhat longer before he became Greenwood’s cross-country coach, it’s now something he can’t see himself not doing. “I couldn’t leave these kids at this point,” he said. “I don’t want to ever look at them and say I’m leaving next year. It would break my heart.”

‘RAGS ‘N ROSES’ IS A COLLECTION OF MANY

12

WWW.GREENWOODARLIFE.COM | DECEMBER 2019 |

For most of her life, Joanna Brandt thought of herself as a job hopper, working at Johnson Dermatology, First National Bank, and the former St. Edwards, among others, before discovering within the last few years what she really wanted to do: become an entrepreneur. Brandt ran the Peculiar Flea, opened by Angie Littleton in March 2018. Littleton also runs Wasted, a Best of the Best winner. By January, the two of them realized how invested Brandt had become in the business, and Brandt purchased it from Littleton in April, renaming it Rags n’ Roses.

Greenwood Life

Rags n’ Roses is a collective of approximately 60 different small businesses housed under one roof at 100 N Main St. The business occupies over 5,000 square feet. Brandt said the business has expanded greatly from when she first opened it. “I’ve worked really hard to get the store full and provide a nice variety of things,” she said. “Probably the biggest compliment I get is when people walk through the door and they stop. And they look around, and they say how nice the store looks. My goal when I took the store over was I really wanted it to

be a place where community could connect and come together. I am all about warm and fuzzy and cozy.” Word of mouth has been a great method for Rags n’ Roses. According to Brandt, there are businesses on a waiting list to get booths at the collective. “I love the word collective,” she said. “Because that’s kind of really what has happened here. We’ve just attracted a really great group of people.” Rags n’ Roses offers boutiques, handcrafted items, antiques and vintage items, clothing, and art, among others. There are vendors

selling men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing. There is re-purposed furniture and decor, as well as homemade jewelry. Rags n’ Roses also sells food items, such as jams and jellies and honey. Some artists sell their work in the store, and Brandt has had book signings for authors published by Tipsy Mockingbird Books. The Village Thrift Store contributes its money to their nonprofit, which helps children in the local area and in Uganda.

from Greenwood. Brandt pointed out that most of the collectives in the River Valley area are owned by women, including Wasted, Belle Starr, and The Shops at Bricktown, and that they all have been supportive of each other. “I think the reason why they’re all successful is because they know there’s enough for everybody,” she said. “These mostly female-owned businesses have learned the way we all will succeed if we raise each other up.”

All of the vendors are from the River Valley area, with the majority being from Greenwood. Brandt said that while most of the collectives in the area have particular niches that suit their owners, she feels more comfortable with a more eclectic arrangement, with a little bit of everything.

Brandt, a Southern California native, moved to Greenwood about 10 years ago. She lives with her two sons, Dylan, 14, and Luke, 11. She also has a 26-year-old daughter, Erica, who is a photographer in Little Rock. Brandt is a member of Focus on Greenwood and has spent the last two years helping the Greenwood football team by instructing them in yoga.

In some ways, Brandt suggested, it’s strange that she’s in the position she is. She considers herself an introvert. “I’ve learned to be extroverted when I need to be,” she said. “I let everyone know what I’m trying to do here. And people have gotten on board. People are like, you must be passionate about antiques and vintage items. I’m really not. What I’m passionate about is supporting other people in achieving their goals. That’s what fills me. The idea that I get to spend my days supporting other people in whatever they want to do makes me happy.”

“It took me a little while to really assimilate to small town life,” she said. “I was always kind of one foot in, one foot out. When I finally put my roots down, it’s been really great. It’s probably one of the best things I’ve done.” The hours at Rags n’ Roses are Tuesday through Friday, 11 to 6, and Saturday, 10 to 4. There will be extended hours during the Christmas season. Information about the shops can be located at https://www. ragsnrosescollective.com/.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH

Petra Radcliffe

The artist of the month for December showing at Greenwood City Hall is Petra Radcliffe. Petra is originally from Pennsylvania and says she’s been an artist since she was a child. She studied art in high school and college, and many more skills she learned on the job. Petra has had several art related careers: sign painting, silver jewelry design, stained glass creation, and hosting painting parties. She currently works as an artist at Cotner Monument and teaches art to students at Job Corps in Cass, AR. Petra has done 4 solo art shows and participated in at least 10 others across Pennsylvania. She was a regular exhibitor at the Bloomsburg Fair, one of the largest fairs in Pennsylvania, winning over 50 ribbons before moving to Arkansas in 2018. Since moving to Arkansas, Petra has jumped into the local art scene and become involved at the Center for Art and Education in Van Buren, volunteers at the Regional Art Museum in Fort Smith, and is an active member in the Greenwood Art Guild. Petra’s artwork is eclectic and varied, but she favors subjects of fantasy and mythology. She likes to paint in acrylics and pastels. Petra has sold over 50 of her works and donated over 30 to charity. She says her mission is to bring art to everyone. You can see Petra’s works on display through the month of December in the lobby of City Hall. Memories of Christmas Past By Drucilla Hughart

Where oh, where has the excitement of Christmas gone? Is it because Christmas items began to appear in the stores in August? When I was growing up the excitement of Christmas began a few weeks before Christmas when the Christmas catalogs arrived in the mail. I think my Christmas list was always the same. A new doll, doll clothes, dishes, hair ribbons and how could one forget that beautiful ribbon candy, apples, oranges and of course nuts? I can just see my long brown stocking with the shape of the fruits and nuts that Santa Claus left in it. The few nuts that we got filled the foot of the stocking. I loved the Brazil nuts and it wasn’t hard to get someone to trade a Brazil nut for a pecan. I liked pecans, too but the Brazil nuts better. It seemed to me that the apples were bigger and redder and the oranges bigger at Christmas. Could it be because that was one of the few times we got one? One can buy fruit the year around today so the thrill of getting apples and oranges is gone and besides girls no longer wear long stockings. In fact few people wear socks period. Even a lot of men go dressed up sans socks. I just can’t get used to that. Just about the biggest thrill at Christmas was hunting the perfect Christmas tree or what we thought was perfect. The excitement of seeing who could make the prettiest Christmas ornament. Stringing red haw berries (berries that grow wild), cutting strips of paper pasting them together to make chains to go around the tree. What more could a child ask for? Memories of Christmas go back some sixty plus years ago. A Christmas I will never forget, we were invited for supper at brother Jim’s house. Oh, what a beautiful tree they had with lots of beautiful wrapped presents under it. I mentioned the fact that we didn’t have any presents under our tree. A few nights later we came home from church to find a big pile of beautifully wrapped

packages under our tree. Packages of all sizes. I called Jim and his late wife Betty and asked if they had been at our house. Of course they said no. So, I thought to myself there really is a Santa Claus. The surprise didn’t last very long. A few nights later we came home to find all the presents gone plus every dresser drawer emptied on to the floor, all the cabinet doors opened. The back window opened, the screen cut. I called Jim and asked again if they had brought the presents. He denied bringing them until I told him what had happened. He started laughing. They had brought the presents which contained such things as a can of potted meat, a can of sardines that looked like it might have been a watch, other little packages and one had popcorn. He still laughs today and says, “I would give a hundred dollars to find out who got the packages. I would have loved to have seen their face when they open the packages.” They had spent more on wrapping paper and ribbon than they had on gifts. There really wasn’t any gifts perse. Happy memories of Christmas at Dawson’s store on Miss Reba’s side. The fogged over windows with the Christmas lights shining through the fog. Fog caused by the open flame stoves in the store. Always displayed in the windows were dolls, little wagons along with outing gowns and pajamas. Red roping stretched around the top of the windows. As a child I knew that Miss Reba’s was a stopping spot for Santa Claus. So many memories of Christmas past. May the Season of Christmas bring back Happy Memories to each of you and may the New Year hold only the very best. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL MY FAITHFUL READERS!

JOEL GOLDSTEIN’S ADVICE AFTER RETIREMENT

GET INVOLVED & STAY INVOLVED STORY BY

Scott Smith

PHOTOGRAPHY BY

Sharla Derry

Joel Goldstein is now 77, and there’s no sign of him slowing down or losing his passion for his family, his activities and his community. Slightly resembling gifted actor Brad Garrett (“Single Parents,” “Everybody Loves Raymond”), the Greenwood resident and retired accountant is as busy as ever, balancing his time between his wife, Donna, their community projects and his favorite hobby, amateur (ham) radio. One might think that Joel only sleeps three hours a night due to a busy schedule that no doubt would tire an individual half his age, yet Joel’s eyes are alert and his laid-back demeanor reveals that he’s rested, inspired and ready to make each day count. “I like to get involved and stay involved in the community,” said Joel, a New York City native who has been an instrumental part of the Focus on Greenwood civic group, as well as annual Greenwood events like the Trail of Lights display, the Run, Walk and Roll fundraiser, Freedom Fest and the Airing of the Quilts Festival. “It’s good to stay active and to become involved in your community.” A Greenwood Parks Commission member for eight years, Joel spearheaded the effort to have the Trail of Lights move from using traditional bulbs to incorporating more cost-effective LED lighting. Each year, the Trail of Lights draws many area residents and visitors of all ages to Greenwood’s Bell Park. “There are 120 displays now on the Trail of Lights, and there’s 14,000 LED bulbs,” said Joel, who with Donna, has three children, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. “The police car display and the large Santa that people see, those are LED lights. Harboring a long-time love for accounting, Joel graduated from Bayside High School in Queens, N.Y., in 1961. He would serve in the Navy aboard the USS Gregory, a FLetcher-class destroyer, during the Vietnam War era, and he would go on to receive an accounting degree from UniversityLife in Hempstead, N.Y., in 1974. “IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT. DONNA IS PERFECT.” Joel Goldstein ABOUT HIS WIFE OF 35 YEARS

“I worked in New York City for a number of years, and in 1981, I answered an ad for an oil production company in Claremore, Okla.,” Joel said. “They wanted to know how fast I could get there, so I moved there.” Claremore would be where Joel would meet Donna for the first time. Their initial encounter still brings a smile to Joel’s face, although, in a way, the two almost never met. “There was this woman who cut my hair, and she would keep telling me, ‘Joel, I have this friend and you have to meet her,’” Joel said. “I was like, ‘I’m OK.’ But she kept telling me that for about a year. “That woman also was telling Donna, ‘I have this friend, Joel, you have to meet,’” he added. “And Donna would tell her that she wasn’t in a place yet where she wanted to meet someone.”

Despite being told “no” from both sides, the hairdresser remained politely persistent, according to Joel. “I finally said, ‘OK, OK. I’ll call her. Give me her phone number and I’ll do it,’” Joel said. Joel dialed Donna’s phone number, completely unsure of what would happen next. To his surprise and relief, a two-hour conversation with Donna occurred. “I’m not exactly sure of everything we said to each other on that first call,” Joel said before laughing. “I probably told her how great I was.” Joel then laughed again before sitting silent for several seconds. “When we went on that first date, when Donna opened the door, I was like, ‘Wow,’” he said. “It was love at first sight. Donna is perfect. We married on St.

Patrick’s Day in 1984. “Really, Donna is the driving force for me,” Joel added. “She supports everything I do. Donna is just wonderful.” Donna harbors similar feelings and memories, calling Joel her “best buddy” and a “terrific” man. “Joel is great,” she said. “He is a great partner. The best day of my life was the day we met.” After working in Claremore, Okla., Joel was transferred to Philadelphia, where he would work for a company that manufactured stainless steel tubing for the aircraft industry. The names of some of Joel’s past employers escape Joel’s memory, but his past interactions with customers and coworkers remain vivid memories. “I loved doing my job,” Joel said. “I looked at it as, I wasn’t hired to come in and say nice things only. I

told the facts. I presented numbers and facts, and the companies would go from there.” Joel later would move to Kenwood, Texas, to serve as vice president/corporate contributor for a company that made components for the oil industry. He also performed work in Atlanta and Houston and before accepting the task of serving as the corporate controller for the Fudruckers restaurant chain’s corporate office in Austin, Texas. “I retired in December 2008, and that is the year we moved to Greenwood,” Joel said. “We had been coming to Fort Smith for family reunions — my wife had family reunions in this area every year — and we liked the area. “I had family in Florida and New York, but I didn’t want to live there,” he added. “We really liked Fort Smith. Fort Smith had a movie theater, a mall, restaurants and an airport, so we decided that Greenwood would be good for us. It was close to Fort Smith and we loved Greenwood.” Within weeks of moving to Greenwood, Joel and Donna became members of the South Sebastian County Historical Society, diving deep into the region’s rich history and getting to know new faces almost daily. “We thought we would get involved in Greenwood, and that we’d have fun with it,” Joel said. “We were right.” Joel and Donna frequently would conduct tours for area school students and other individuals. These tours would include Greenwood’s Old Jail Museum, among other locations. “We would talk about each of the buildings and share information about history,” Joel said. “We really enjoyed that.” In 2009, Joel joined the Greenwood club of Kiwanis International. All was well inside the club until Joel learned that national Kiwanis officials were planning to hike the cost of dues for its members. Joel and his fellow Greenwood Kiwanis Club members

voted to disband their club and join the Focus on Greenwood organization, which now has about 100 members and hosts various community fundraisers and projects. “One of those projects is the Trail of Lights, and it provides three $2,000 scholarships for students each year,” Joel said. “The board looks at the students’ backgrounds and information, takes a vote and then helps three kids who could use our help.” In the past, Joel and his colleagues have hosted golf tournaments and provided shoes and eyeglasses for students in need. Some older residents who struggled with finances have received dentures as a result of the efforts of Joel and similar minded Greenwood residents. “Focus on Greenwood is a great group,” Joel said. “The idea is to put focus on this commu-

nity, and to put money back into Greenwood.”

squares are areas are regions. It’s fun.”

Joel also shares his time with fellow parishioners at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Fort Smith. He’s served as church treasurer for seven years and views the connection as a winwin for all.

When asked if his social schedule will slow down in the coming months, Joel laughed.

“I enjoy being treasurer,” Joel said. “I get to put my accounting skills to good use.” When asked how often he spends with his ham radio, Joel’s eyes widened, and his smile grew considerably. “As much as possible!” Joel answered with a laugh. “My sign is W5GOL, and I’ve been licensed since 2013. I’ve made over 17,000 contacts both digitally and with voice, and I came in 868th in the world and sixth in the state of Arkansas in contacts with grid squares — grid

“It’s interesting because the Fort Smith Area Amateur Radio Club meeting is on the same day as the meeting for the South Sebastian County Historical Society,” he said. “I balance both. I try to make sure that I go to the historical society meeting with Donna. If I don’t show up, they’ll think that Donna left me. I can’t have people thinking that.” When asked if he would do anything differently in the past, if he had the chance, Joel answered quickly. “No,” he said. “I’ve stayed busy. I’ve always wanted to get involved, and I’m still doing that, so no, I wouldn’t change anything. I’m good.”

JOEL GOLDSTEIN

WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST CHILDHOOD MEMORY?

(Smiles). My parents used to take us kids to what they called friends of the family in Brooklyn. There’s a photograph of all of us kids around each other. I’m 8 years old in the photo. My wife looked at that picture and said, “Well, you can tell who the accountant will be in this picture.” I’m in that photo, wearing a tie. (Laughs). I’m only 8 in the picture, but I’m wearing a tie.

YOU AND YOUR WIFE, DONNA, HAVE BEEN MARRIED FOR 35 YEARS NOW. WHAT IS THE SECRET TO YOUR MARRIAGE’S SUCCESS?

I think it’s because we’re still in love. We respect each other. When you see us out walking to places, we’re holding hands. Donna is very talented and very bright. She is a great lady.

IS IT SAFE TO SAY THAT YOU AND DONNA ARE ALMOST INSEPARABLE?

Yes, pretty much so. When I became a licensed amateur/ham radio operator, Donna became a licensed radio operator, too. When we took the test to get licensed, Donna was so nervous. She said she hadn’t studied for the test and was worried about it. But she ended up getting one more thing correct on the test than I did.

ARE YOU A SPORTS FAN, OR DO YOU PREFER LISTENING TO MUSIC OR WATCHING MOVIES?

I do like sports. We spent two years keeping the statistics for the Greenwood High School football games. We would do the home games but we would also go to the out-of-town games. We didn’t get paid for it and we didn’t get any kind of reimbursement for it. We did that just because we enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun. And now I watch the football games on live stream. It’s also fun to do that.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT LIVING IN GREENWOOD?

I really like it here. The people are so welcoming here in Greenwood. The people are great.

HAVE YOU MADE A LOT OF FRIENDS BY LIVING IN GREENWOOD?

Yes. Donna and I have met a lot of people here, and we’re active in the South Sebastian County Historical Society. Greenwood is a community with people who care.

WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER LIVING SOMEWHERE OTHER THAN GREENWOOD? No. I really, really like the people in Greenwood. Greenwood is a great place to get involved in things. I love it here.

TRAIL OF LIGHTS

A CHRISTMAS WONDERLAND THAT HIGHLIGHTS THE SPIRIT OF GIVING By Scott Cutlip CONTRIBUTING WRITER The Greenwood Trail of Lights at Bell Park began on Nov. 29, the day after Thanksgiving. The Trail of Lights is open from 5:30 to 9 in the evening daily, and ends on Dec. 26. The annual event, now in its twelfth year, is run by Focus on Greenwood. The event started in 2008. It originated with the late Bobby Mizell and his wife Martha. According to Joel Goldstein, a member and

past president of Focus on Greenwood, the group canvassed vendors in town and went to the A&P Commission, totalling $28,000. They went to Den of Metal Arts in Conway, Mo. for lighting displays. That first year, 40 displays were in the park. “Bobby Mizell, his brother Roy Mizell, an individual named Tommy Wilheim, and David Weisenthel were probably the first ones to light up the park,” Goldstein said. “I saw it and decided I wanted to be involved. In 2009, I started helping.”

cus on Greenwood also provides gifts for seniors in nursing homes and supports the food pantry programs at Greenwood schools. Trail of Lights is a big event for Greenwood, and planning for it begins almost immediately after the last one ends, including ensuring Focus on Greenwood books the sites needed for the next Trail of Lights. The Trail of Lights is worked by volunteers, so that all the money that is donated can be used by Focus on Greenwood to help the community.

This year, there will be more than 140 displays, which includes up to 40,000 light bulbs.

The Trail of Lights has grown in popularity over the years. In 2010, 849 vehicles drove through the display, while in 2012, there were 1,073 vehicles. Although they no longer keep track of the exact number of vehicles, it is estimated that at least 2,000 vehicles will drive through this Christmas season. Greenwood’s Trail of Lights is also on Arkansas Trail of Lights brochure.

A donation of $3.00 per car is requested to drive through the trail. “We’ve had church buses come, and they will say, is it $3.00 per person?” Goldstein said. “No, it’s a donation of $3.00 per vehicle.” Visitors come from Oklahoma, Texas, and as far away as Illinois. The money raised through the Trail of Lights will contribute to scholarships, as well as assisting in paying expenses or medical bills for those in need. Fo-

CONNECTING COMMUNITY One Film at a Time By Scott Cutlip CONTRIBUTING WRITER What started as an innocent way to “trick” other parents on Halloween has become a quest for Mikey Whisenhunt to provide a communal experience for Greenwood residents on Saturday nights. Several Halloweens ago Whisenhunt set up his projector and a large screen mounted on his garage door. Children would come with their parents to the door and receive candy, and then the

34

children would be reluctant to leave the movie playing on the screen. “I’ve been doing that every Halloween for the last four, five years,” Whisenhunt said. “We try to stick to family-friendly kid movies, typically Disney. We’ve had a lot of great feedback from families while they’re trick-ortreating.” This year, Whisenhunt decided to

WWW.GREENWOODARLIFE.COM | DECEMBER 2019 |

Greenwood Life

make the movie experience more than just a Halloween occasion. He has already shown several movies for the holiday season and looks to show more during the upcoming year. Whisenhunt’s desire to give back to the community has a specific genesis. In 2015, Boston, the son of Mikey and his wife Stephanie, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Boston, then 10, went through several pro-

cedures over the years. Whisenhunt said Boston is currently in remission, a status he’s gone through four times previously. “The community always rallied around Boston,” Whisenhunt said. Boston has received a Make-a-Wish and been appointed a police chief for a day. According to Whisenhunt, the Greenwood community and local churches provided a lot of assistance,

particularly helping the family with meals. Whisenhunt had been gone for as long as four months at a time with Boston getting treatment, while Stephanie held down the home, along with their 13-year-old son, Keaton. “He’s had a lot of treatments for the last four years,” Whisenhunt said. “So I’ve missed out on a lot of community events like the Christmas parade and football games, that I always like to do. And I guess I’m trying to make up for that.” He was inspired by a Halloween setup he witnessed in Fort Smith 16 years ago. Whisenhunt said there was an inflatable slide, a grill going, fresh caramel apples, and spotlights. “It is really, really cool,” he said. “I can’t do that financially at all, but I’ve always remembered that as a way to welcome everybody. I can continue that all year long. It doesn’t take anything, and it helps bring everybody together. We can get more people together, not just on my street, but anywhere, and just enjoy hanging out and fellowship and conversation.”

movies he will be showing yet. He wants as much as possible to tie the movies to the specific time of the year, so Valentine-related movies in February and Easter-related around that holiday (he said probably Hop). He also has a love for 80s movies, with the cult classic Monster Squad being one of the movies he has recently shown. On December 21, he will be showing The Polar Express and will have hot chocolate available. Other Christmas films played before then include Home Alone and Ernest Saves Christmas. He said he also wanted to show Gremlins and Die Hard, but his wife vetoed those choices. Movies will start at dusk. There will be blankets set up for everyone to sit on, although people are encouraged to bring their own chairs. During cold

weather, Whisenhunt will have the firepit blazing. Whisenhunt shows his movies at 190 Locust Drive. Showtimes will be announced at https://www.facebook.com/ groups/182304235465110/ (Hey Greenwood! What’s Happening?). Boston’s story can be followed at https:// www.facebook.com/bostonsjourney/. Donations can be made or products can be purchased at http://strong4boston.com/. (RIGHT) Mikey Whisenhunt. (BELOW) A previous showing of Earnest Saves Christmas. - Photos provided by Mikey Whisenhunt

Whisenhunt plans to show a movie every Saturday night, weather and Boston’s health permitting. The screen is 112 inches across diagonally and is mounted on the garage door. He has a short-term projector, which means it can be set up in front of the screen without blocking anyone’s view. Whisenhunt also built a digital jukebox which can project the sound down the street, although he has promised not to do that. Whisenhunt doesn’t know all of the
