River Valley’s Largest Public Poll Keeps Growing
Categories

ach year, the Times Record staff is amazed at the outpouring of public feedback when we ask for nominations, and then votes, for the best businesses in the River Valley area. This year was no different. We saw participation from more than 15,000 people who cast more than 500,000 votes in one or more of the 140+ possible categories. This very special publication represents the culmination of this participation, which started back in June with open nominations. After several weeks of write-ins from the public, we compiled the highest number of nominations to get the top five businesses for each category. These were then voted on by the general public in July and August to create the top-three businesses readers will see in this publication. Even in this great diversity of business types and sizes, we typically see some commonalities. To be in the top three, typically you’ll see: great customer service, a passion for what they do and a commitment to their word.

It’s those qualities we see, that make the staff at the Times Record proud to be part of this growing celebration. We thank local businesses throughout the region for their hard work and for making this region a better place to live, play and work. We’re pretty sure we echo the sentiments of thousands throughout our region. They already said as much with their vote. —Crystal Costa, Publisher | ccosta@swtimes.com

Metabolic Research Center
best WEIGHT LOSS
Advanced science + personal coaching=results Metabolic Research Center has been helping clients lose weight through a mix of cutting edge weight loss programs and one-on-one coaching for more than 30 years. For the past 11 years, they’ve been in the River Valley area, and people continue to vote them the best of the best in weight loss services. “We provide more than just nutrition guidance,” said Sarah Harper, area manager. “We truly partner with each of our clients individually to create a lifestyle plan that ensures weight loss success. We provide the tools, tips, accountability and motivation to help our clients reach their goals.” Losing weight often seems daunting to many. “What feels simple to some, feels complex to others,” Harper said. “Eating right seems easy and natural, once you know how. Eating is something we do from birth and many habits get formed along
The Metabolic Research Center team works with those who want to lose weight to customize a eating program that fits their lifestyle, body chemistry and individual goals. They are located at 3321 S 74th Street in Fort Smith.
the way - both good and bad. There is a huge need for guidance in healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle. We’re blessed to be part of this community’s journey to health.” Employees stand behind the “research” in Metabolic Research Center. They use specific and formulated plans to guide clients to plans that are specific to their needs and their metabolic situation, resulting in quicker results. There are no pre-packaged meals on the program and there’s no need for calorie counting, Harper said. “We aren’t just a weight-loss program. We change people’s lives every day,” Harper said. The staff has also found that once-weekly meetings create an environment of accountability, as well as fostering the relationships of support and encouragement as their clients work toward improving their health.
Center for Hearing
HEARING best AID CENTER
Personal care and time make the difference Center for Hearing, Ltd. is a private practice audiology clinic that has served children and adults for more than 20 years in the Fort Smith area. They specialize in diagnostic hearing testing and treating hearing loss through the use of stateof-the-art hearing aid technology. The owners wanted to make sure they could provide a unique kind of care for their patients because hearing loss is anything but a “one size fits all” condition. Dr. Linton and the late Kelly Spradlin-Johnston were very motivated and worked hard to create the area’s first, and still only, private practice audiology clinic. Similar offices are often run by corporate or larger medical facilities. “We want to focus our service completely around the specific needs of our patients and we endeavor to do that each and every day,” said office manager Leeann Harrelson. This focus and dedication has paid off. The community has once again said Center for Hearing is the best hearing aid center. They were voted the 2018 and 2017 Best Hearing Aid Center for the River Valley area. Center for Hearing boasts three doctors of audiology: Dr. Kelley Linton, Dr. Trace Cash and Dr. Lori Boyd. All three have roots in the River
Valley area. Dr. Linton is a lifelong resident; Dr. Cash grew up in West Fork and Denver, Colorado and Dr. Boyd is a native of Fort Smith. “Our philosophy dictates that we serve each patient in a Christian and family-oriented environment where personal attention is the norm, not the exception,” said Dr. Kelley Linton. What sets them apart is that they all truly take the time to listen to the patient, to ensure they are doing all they can to find the best hearing solution, according to Harrelson. “Dr. Linton knew it would take a lot of hard work to get our name out there and to let people know our services were available,” Harrelson said of getting the business going, “but the lifelong friendships with our great patients and the fun we’ve had along the way have been a wonderful surprise. It’s nice to work with people who enjoy what they do and getting to know so many people in this area has been the best part of running the clinic.” The team is also committed to early prevention and education about hearing loss. “It is never too early to protect your hearing,” Dr. Linton said. “Hearing loss is often a very gradual process and can go unnoticed for a long time.” She encourages everyone to get a baseline hearing test because,
“it really is a quality of life issue and hearing loss can affect how socially active a person can be. It’s heartbreaking to watch friends or family members withdraw from activities because hearing becomes too hard.” Along with full diagnostic hearing evaluations and industrial audiometric testing, they provide the very latest in digital technology, repair all makes and models of hearing aids and offer custom-fit ear protection. And for any hearing aid purchased at Center for Hearing, they provide batteries for the life of the hearing aid as part of their service. The team takes pride in making sure they are engaged and giving back to the Fort Smith community. For example, Dr. Linton is a graduate of Leadership Fort Smith and Leadership Crawford County. She is a volunteer audiologist for the Good Samaritan Clinic. Outside of Fort Smith, she is part of a medical mission team that travels to Honduras every year to evaluate and treat more than 500 children. As the business has grown, they have also recognized that it’s of value and important to be engaged in the industrial side of the Fort Smith community. They saw a need for industrial hearing testing, and now have a sister company, Center for Industrial Audiometrics, which has the River Valley’s only mobile testing and hearing conservation center, and can assist Fort Smith and all surrounding areas. Through this effort, they are able to provide industrial audiometric testing, noise measurement and monitoring, dosimetry, annual hearing test reviews, custom hearing protection and compliance with OSHA regulations. Dr. Linton specializes in industrial noise management and in hearing safety compliance. Center for Hearing, Ltd. offers financing options and accepts most insurance, including Blue Cross, QualChoice, Humana, Tricare, Arkansas Medicaid United HealthCare and Medicare. The staff at Center for Hearing celebrate 20 years in business and another year of taking the top award for Best Hearing Aid Center in the 2018 Best of the Best Readers’ poll.

For over 30 years, Fort Smith Dentistry has provided the community with high-quality dental care. Today, two dentists — Dr. Isaac Tuan Le and Dr. Stan M. Udouj — and their staff of 19 are continuing that tradition of care. “We are passionate about improving people’s oral health and helping them acknowledge the correlation between oral health and general health,” said Dr. Le. “Above all, we want to bring a beautiful, healthy smile to everyone.” Reviews on Fort Smith Dentistry’s Facebook page speak to the type of care patients receive: “Excellent doctors and staff; they make you feel comfortable and at ease.” “Fort Smith is fortunate to have this group in our area; professional, kind and outstanding work.” “This is an awesome clinic. Dentistry terrifies me, and the staff and the doc helped me overcome that fear.” “The quality of the people and the service is above and beyond all expectations.” The team works to provide patients with the latest technology for

Dr. Shane Laster
best OPTOMETRIST
New eye center has familiar faces and new talent A new eye center in town is soon to be home to a new team of eye doctors, a father/son team. Dr. Shane Laster, the father portion of the team, is neither new to the area nor to the field of optometry. He has been serving the Fort Smith area since 1994. In February 2018, Dr. Laster opened the doors at his new location, Laster Eye Center, at 9001 Jenny Lind Road in Fort Smith, with the anticipation of teaming in practice with his youngest son, Seth Laster, Laster said. Seth will be joining his dad in the practice following his 2019 graduation from optometry school at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Okla. Also new to the Laster Eye Center, but not the industry, is a group of friendly, courteous and caring individuals, who came to the clinic fully trained, Laster said. They have been in the industry a long time, they are very knowledgeable and they have also worked with Dr. Laster over the years. The opening of the new center has been met with success as Dr. Laster was voted by the public as the 2018 best optometrist in the River Valley area. The center offers both medical eye care as well as routine vision exams, Laster said. “We do a lot of specialty testing,” he said. Advanced contact lens fit-
tings and advanced dry eye diagnosis and treatment are also offered at the center, he said. An imaging device helps with early detection of wet macular degeneration. Working and communicating with their patients’ family doctors to closely monitor patient vision health is a routine part of their service at the center, Laster said. The vascular system in the eye will show changes systemically, and a thorough examination can allow patients to be diagnosed earlier with already developing health issues. Recently, Dr. Laster saw an 8-year-old male with an extremely rare lens distortion disorder, Laster said. The rare disorder can be linked to kidney disease as well, he said. The young boy was taken for further testing, and he, in fact, has been diagnosed with the rare kidney disease. The early detection will hopefully help the young boy avoid kidney failure, Laster said. Advanced diagnostic equipment at Laster Eye Center is one of the things Laster is most excited to offer, he said. The testing will allow Laster, and his son soon too, to better serve their patients’ eye health involving particularly cornea, retina and optic nerve functioning. Call today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Laster at (479) 242-2020.
Dr. Shane Laster (center and left), owner of Laster Eye Center, celebrates the new location with staff through a formal ribbon cutting earlier this year. The new facility is located at 9001 Jenny Lind Rd in Fort Smith.

Patience helps earn patients trust, loyalty physiotherapy, foot orthotics and nutritional consultation. Two elements of running the business that have been a surprise to Seubold are that he’s never really off the clock “because having a successful clinic takes hard work and a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff,” and that good employees are hard to find. “Luckily we have an awesome staff that has helped us grow,” he said. “I feel that being as deeply rooted in chiropractic as we are really lets our patients see the passion we have for chiropractic and the drive we have to get them feeling better,” Seubold said. “This translates into our patients having the utmost confidence in us.” Seubold said education in chiropractic care is very important for patients. “I feel our patients are not only getting better, but they understand why they are sick, how they are getting better, and they are learning that chiropractic can allow them to continue feeling better down the road,” he said.

For almost 40 years, the doctors at Seubold Chiropractic Clinic in Fort Smith have been focused on helping people feel better naturally and ultimately reach and maintain optimal health. Today, the family-run clinic at 5600 Euper Lane is owned by Josh Seubold. “Ever since I was a young boy, I always wanted to be a chiropractor like my dad (the late Dr. Torsten Seubold),” Seubold said. Dr. Torsten Seubold founded the clinic’s current location, carrying on the legacy of his father, Dr. Frank Seubold. Over the years, Seubold said the biggest changes in the business have been the addition of technology like digital radiography and computerized notes. These advances have helped speed up the process “so we can help more patients and in a more timely manner,” Seubold noted. Today, the clinic provides a variety of services, including chiropractic adjusting, X-ray, myofascial and trigger point therapy, scoliosis screening,

Studio Platinum
best HAIR SALON
Cassie Cass (third from left) has taken her dream of opening her own salon and combined it with the creativity and talent that she and her team have to create a growing, trendy salon for the River Valley region. She has plans to expand the current salon into an area double the size and offering a full-service spa.
Dreams get bigger as salon expands When Cassie Cass opened Studio Platinum Salon and Spa three years ago, she was investing in her dreams. “I actually took what little money I had and invested it into a dream — and now it’s a thriving reality,” Cass said of the business, a full-service hair salon at 5919 U.S. 271 South in Fort Smith. The business started in a 400-square-foot building (now affectionately known to clients as “the shack”), and Studio Platinum moved to its current, larger location two years ago. Now the salon is growing again. “From the beginning of starting this business, I have said I wanted
to be the biggest and best hair salon in Fort Smith,” Cass said. “I’d like to announce here, for the first time, that we will be expanding. We will be doubling our square footage, adding on a new salon and completely remodeling the existing building into a spa.” The planned expansion also includes a new parking lot as well as new services, stylist and estheticians to accommodate Studio Platinum’s clients. Cass and her team of five employees work hard to stay on top of all the latest hair trends, “and we have perfected the classics,” Cass said. “Our customers’ happiness is above everything else in our salon, and
people really appreciate that.” That happiness rings true as Studio Platinum was voted the No. 1 hair salon in the River Valley area in the 2018 Best of the Best contest. Reviews on Studio Platinum’s Facebook page also reflect happy customers: “It’s worth the 40-minute drive for me to go to Studio Platinum.” “A great place to get your blonde on!” “The best salon experience I have EVER had in my life!” The salon specializes in hair color, hair cuts and tape-in extensions while striving to keep Fort Smith up to date in the latest hair trends. Connected to Platinum Salon is another
Best of the Best nominee in the spa category and for best esthetician, Twilla’s Skin & Brow Medi-Lounge. “I contribute my success to my family for helping me with my children while I put in the long hours to start the business, my husband for his support through the ups and downs of owning a business, of course our loyal clients and our community, and the wonderfully talented group of stylists who are continuously trying new things and bouncing ideas back and forth with each other,” Cass said. She said it has been overwhelming and rewarding to see her hard work pay off. ”I can’t wait to see where the future takes us,” Cass said.

Kevin Clifton Real Estate, Inc.
topREAL ESTATE COMPANY
Happy customers = successful, growing business for Kevin Clifton Real Estate Co “There is a lot to be said about happy customers, said Kevin Clifton, owner of Kevin Clifton Real Estate Inc. in Van Buren. “It’s not all about dollars and cents,” Clifton said. At the end of the day, if your client is happy with the transaction, you can always count on word of mouth referrals, Clifton added. This philosophy has helped earn the company the trust and respect of many clients, resulting this year in being voted among the top-3 Best of the Best real estate companies in the River Valley area. Kevin Clifton Real Estate currently employs 15 real estate agents. When Clifton opened his doors five years ago, he had no intention of having 15 agents. In fact, he said he has not asked a single agent to join the agency. Instead, the agents at Kevin Clifton Real Estate have all approached Clifton. He said he has interviewed each one to make sure being a team player is a concept his agents understand. He said, “I believe more in the quality than the quantity of an agent.” The agents at Clifton Real Estate are dedicated, knowledgeable, professional, experienced and personable. They are “the local market experts,” Clifton said. They “have the knowledge (needed) to help buy and sell real estate in the River Valley market.” Diversity is also a key dynamic
of the agents represented at Kevin Clifton Real Estate. Consumers envision a relationship even before they begin the process to acquire property, Clifton said. Arvest
best BANK
50 years of growth through service, giving The story of Arvest Bank began with the purchase of The Bank of Bentonville, which had $3.5 million in deposits, in 1961. That was followed by the acquisition of an even smaller bank in the nearby town of Pea Ridge in 1963, and in 1975, another bank was purchased in the neighboring town of Rogers. For almost a decade afterwards, these locally managed banks were the entire banking network now known as Arvest. Fast-forward to today, and Arvest has more than 270 locations spread across Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas. This includes the recent acquisition and conversion of Bear State Bank, which introduced Arvest into 16 new communities in Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. The deal also pushed Arvest’s total assets past the $18 billion mark, and solidified its position as the largest bank in Arkansas in terms of deposit market share. Despite having grown strategically from a small bank in a small town to a regional bank in
towns both small and large, however, Arvest has remained true to the principles and practices that have made it successful in order to guide its future. Arvest will always be active and involved members of the communities it serves and will always work to put the needs of its customers first as it continues to fulfill its mission — People helping people find financial solutions for life. Arvest is an Equal Housing Lender and Member FDIC, and its banking services include loans, deposits, treasury management, credit cards, mortgage loans and mortgage servicing. In Fort Smith, it also features the Arvest Business Resource Center, located on the first floor of the Arvest location at 5000 Rogers Ave. The center was established specifically to assist business owners through the countless financial choices and decisions they face. Arvest is equally committed to community involvement, something that is apparent in Fort Smith. In 2017, for example, 147 of Arvest’s 266 total associates in Fort Smith and the River Valley
combined to volunteer for 998 hours of service. Other 2017 highlights included: • Corporate giving that surpassed $250,000 •
22 U.S. Small Business Administration loans totaling $8.9 million
•
Four community development loans totaling more than $20 million
The giving and support has continued in 2018, and includes Arvest’s annual 1 Million Meals campaign, which is designed to fight hunger in the 135-plus communities the bank serves. In total, associates from Fort Smith and the River Valley raised more than 200,000 meals during the two-month initiative. That includes $24,000 in monetary donations and thousands of non-perishable food items, and all of stays in Fort Smith and the River Valley. Arvest today shares the same commitments its founders did back in 1961 – an intense dedication to focusing on our customers and communities above all else. Arvest associates Tabitha Embree and Kevin Stiles visited with students at Harvest Time Academy and presented a “Teach Kids to Save” lesson. Arvest presents this program throughout the year to many local schools.

Family business sees big growth, recognition And he said that a commitment to quality and personal service will continue to help him solidify his place as a top roofer in the area. “Our staff responds to calls and problems promptly, and our employees take time to make sure the homeowner is fully satisfied before we leave the job,” McCoy said. The business started small with a roofing crew that consisted of McCoy’s wife, his father and him, working in Poteau, Okla. Now, they have expanded their commercial business to seven states and do work on residential homes all throughout eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas. McCoy said they are working to implement packages for the entire “exterior package” so they can take care of roofing, siding, windows and painting of exterior buildings.

Some things are just in your blood. For Chris McCoy, the roofing business is an entrepreneurial legacy he is proud to be a part of. As the owner of McCoy Roof Co., McCoy admits the main reason he’s in the business is because his dad was in roofing for more than 47 years. “He taught me a trade so that I would always be able to provide for my family,” McCoy said. McCoy said that hard work and genuine relationships are the reason for the growth and development of his own company, McCoy Roof Co. McCoy Roof Co. was founded nine years ago. He now employs 15 people, and this year his growth hit a new milestone when the public voted McCoy Roof Co as one of the top-three best roofing companies in the River Valley area. O’Neal Real Estate Creativity, collaboration propel agency to new heights in real estate
Aaron O’Neal, the 2018 Best of the Best Real Estate agent with his wife, Laura. O’Neal Real Estate recently moved into remodeled office space at 2500 Rogers Ave. in Fort Smith.
In real estate, you’re not just selling a house, you’re selling a neighborhood. O’Neal Real Estate understands that distinction well. In fact, their intimate knowledge of the local community is one reason O’Neal Real Estate has rapidly become one of the best realty agencies in the River Valley area. “We consider it a great honor to be considered one of the area’s best real estate companies,” owner Aaron O’Neal said. O’Neal Real Estate was voted as the best real estate company for the 2018 Best of the Best reader’s choice awards. Aaron also took home the top award as the best real estate agent in the River Valley area for the second year in a row. It was an unlikely turn of events that put O’Neal Real Estate on the path to success. Aaron and his wife, Laura, originally went into real estate as a way to supplement their income on teachers’ salaries. “I never could have imagined owning my own company,” O’Neal said. Yet, after over a decade of experience in the real estate industry, Aaron and Laura decided to start their own company. O’Neal Real Estate was established a little over three years ago and has now grown to employ dozens of O’Neal realty agents, with multiple locations across Western Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma. The husband-and-wife-team decided to do things a bit differently in order to cater to individual clients’ needs. “We pride ourselves on being a marketing firm that specializes in real estate,” O’Neal said. With creative marketing plans and a varied pool of networking connections, the realty agents offer access to more widespread exposure for their cli-
best REAL ESTATE COMPANY ent’s property listings. O’Neal Real Estate ensures that properties are marketed on a national level, with listings that regularly appear on major national real estate websites. They also work with their clients on a face-to-face basis, skillfully guiding them through the process of buying or selling property. “We offer the best local knowledge base to our clients,” O’Neal said. The agency’s swift popularity is often attributed to the local expertise of their agents. O’Neal Real Estate professionals are long-time local residents that have extensive experience with buying and selling homes in the area. “We really have the most talented group of people I’ve ever worked with,” O’Neal remarked. O’Neal Real Estate supports locally owned businesses and often strives to offer a helping hand to the community; whether they’re contracting local carpet cleaners, ordering local print marketing materials, or even using fresh locally-roasted coffee in their gift bags. O’Neal believes that their positive presence in the area leaves them better equipped to help clients navigate the local real estate industry. O’Neal Real Estate is a business founded on collaboration. O’Neal said that much of their success comes from the culture of mutual support that is encouraged within the agency. With experts employed from all over the River Valley, O’Neal sought to create a network of well-respected professionals in the industry. O’Neal commented that their agents take pride in who they are and what they do, and that they will continue to reach higher and seek to exceed expectations.

Shirley’s Tax Service
TAX PREP best SERVICES
Tax codes may change, personal care doesn’t What started as a side job in her husband’s real estate business has grown into a thriving business with five locations in the River Valley. Customers continue to rely and believe in the staff at Shirley’s Tax Services, voting her and the team again the best tax preparation service in the area. The team took that title in 2017 and was awarded the highly-competitive title again at the 2018 Best of the Best Awards Gala held on Oct. 19 at the Fort Smith Convention Center. Tax preparation can be a daunting task that few think of fondly. But the staff works hard to show that it’s not just about the numbers for them. “We treat every customer the same, whether big or small,” said President and General Manager Paul Thrift. “We really do care about our clients and do everything possible to go the extra mile for them, while trying to do that at a price they can afford.” And Thrift says that when you genuinely care about people and their particular situation, they can feel and sense that, making the entire process better. Shirley’s Tax Service has been a locally owned, family business since opening in 1976. The staff of 25 is managed by Thrift, his sister Sharon Akers, his niece Mikaela Akers and his brother Stan Thrift. Since their debut more than 40 years ago, the company has served more than 7,000 clients. Tax codes have changed greatly with the various presidential and congressional elections, but the team works hard to make sure that their clients are informed and in compliance. But the heart of the company comes from a focus to go the extra mile. For example, clients (and sometimes, the individual isn’t even a client) havecome to them with concerns about a letter from the IRS. The accountant at Shirley’s Tax Service will check with the IRS to get all the needed infor-
The team at Shirley’s Tax Service celebrate their first place win last year at the 2017 Best of the Best gala. Again, they were voted the Best of the Best in tax preparation services for the River Valley area at the 2018 awards gala Friday, Oct. 19 at the Fort Smith Convention Center.
mation and then work up a game plan to present to the client. “We spend our summers doing that,” Thrift said. “And we don’t quit until we get that resolved.” Sometimes that means going to great lengths where the IRS is concerned. “Sometimes it’s difficult to get through to the right person who can give us the decision we need,” Thrift explained. When that happens, sometimes they work to get a taxpayer advocate, which is one IRS employee assigned to the case with full authority to make final decisions. Then the accountant can present the case to them directly. Tax season can be an extremely stressful and busy time for his team, but they take advantage of opportunities to bond and have a little fun when they can. One of their biggest employee events of the year is Valentine’s Day — right in the middle
of tax season— but it’s that timing that it’s a good opportunity to celebrate a hard working team who goes to great lengths to help clients. “We give everyone a bunch of chocolate, we cater barbecue at all the locations, do balloons, etc,” Thrift said, adding that it’s the only holiday when the entire staff is all together and so it makes a great opportunity to show appreciation for the team. Happy employees, happy clients— and that’s been the goal for more than 40 years. “We really want to thank everyone for their support of our business,” Thrift said. “And if you haven’t used us yet, we would be thrilled if you gave us a try. It really is our goal to please each and every client.” Shirley’s Tax Service provides offices in Fort Smith, Van Buren, Barling and in January, their new office will open in Greenwood.

Left: Scott Hansen (center) with his wife Valerie and son Cort, along with James Mullen at Hansen Roofing and Construction. Hansen Roofing was voted the 2018 Best of the Best Roofing Company for the second year in a row. They were also named the 2018 Best Window and Siding Company and were among the top-3 finalists in the home remodeling category.
Hansen Roofing continues growth, success Hansen Roofing and Construction of Van Buren wants to simplify the process of roofing and general contracting projects for each one of its customers. The family-owned business handles any type of roofing from residential to commercial. Hansen Roofing and Construction also provides installation of gutters and siding, remodeling services and privacy fencing. Since starting the business in 2010, “our business has tripled every year and continues to grow,” said owner Scott Hansen. “We have been able to help out a lot of charities and people through our success.” The key to that success, Hansen says, is hard work and long hours from the salesmen, installers and office people. “Our friendly staff and installa-
tion crews are second to none.” The entire Hansen Roofing and Construction team is committed to providing customers with high-quality and on-time work. “To be named among the top businesses in the area after eight or nine years really says a lot about our character and how we do business,” Hansen said. And the company’s growth continues, as Hansen says he is expanding another office to Fort Smith, so Hansen Roofing and Construction will have locations in Fort Smith and Van Buren. Their customers recommend their work to others and return for additional services because of the quality workmanship and the quality of the products, Hansen said. According to Hansen, they are the only Fort Smith roofing compa-
ny to offer lifetime labor warranties on roofing systems. “If something goes wrong 15 or 20 years down the road, we’ll be there to fix it,” Hansen said. Hansen employees are proven roofers, but they do a lot more. The team also handles general contractor services and has experience in complete remodeling. Hansen Roofing offers free inspections, quotes on gutters and siding installation and free quotes on remodeling and fencing work. When dealing with roof damage, the company works directly with the property owner’s insurance company. Hansen Roofing and Construction is fully certified, has an “A” rating with the Better Business Bureau and carries $2 million in general liability coverage, according to its website. Over the years in the roofing
and construction business, Hansen has gained insights into the industry. One issue he sees is that when there is a storm or hail, businesses or individuals with less experience and standards come out to fix roofs. “After a hailstorm, everybody and their brother becomes a roofer,” Hansen said. To avoid these issues, he recommends checking up on their place of business. If it’s out of state or if their address isn’t verified, homeowners should proceed with caution before agreeing to any services. Hansen said one bonus to running his business is “the great people we get to meet on a daily basis. We are honored to be part of such a great community. The River Valley is full of so many great people, and we appreciate the opportunity to serve them.”

Small class size, flexibility make UAFS an ideal choice The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith offers a dynamic learning environment for more than 6,500 students each semester. Small class sizes and applied learning opportunities support the student-centered education that has defined UAFS since its founding in 1928, propelled by an $83 million endowment. UAFS offers 60 bachelor’s and associate degrees, 35 certificates, and a master’s program with state-of-theart campus facilities utilized by every program to ensure the most up-todate, hands-on training. Students can also participate in
more than 100 student organizations, such as Greek life, intramural sports, academic societies, and cultural groups. For students who want to live in the thick of campus life, UAFS offers a residence hall with a full-service dining hall and an apartment complex for upper-level students. Each year, students and the community come out to cheer the Lions and Lady Lions athletic programs which compete in NCAA Division II baseball, women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s basketball, tennis, cross country, and golf. The university is a key driver for
economic development and quality of place in the region. Conservative studies have demonstrated a $300 million annual economic impact on the Fort Smith region by the university. Additionally, UAFS helps improve the community through service projects conducted by volunteer students and employees, as well as collaboration with nonprofits across the area to help residents. Over the course of its 16 years as a four-year university, UAFS has also helped improve the baccalaureate attainment rate of Sebastian County, with 14 percent of residents now
possessing a four-year degree compared to 10.8 percent in 2000. As the most affordable university in Arkansas, UAFS recently doubled down on its commitment to affordability with the announcement of the UAFS Promise, a fixed tuition program for incoming freshmen beginning in fall 2019. Through the program, students who remain on track to graduate according to their degree plan will be able to lock in the same low tuition rate for four years. For more information about programs, financing and opportunities visit www.uafs.edu.

Charolette Tidwell
Fort Smith ‘giver’ said to ‘flow like water,’ helping those in need BY JOHN LOVETT | TIMES RECORD PHOTOS BY BRIAN SANDERFORD | TIMES RECORD
Anyone who knows Charolette Tidwell can attest to a few things: She never gives up, she leads by example, and it is difficult to keep up with her. Following a successful career as a nurse, the founder and executive director of Antioch for Youth & Family has worked selflessly over the past 18 years to feed the hungry and help lift people out of poverty. She has been voted by Times Record readers as both the Citizen of the Year and Volunteer of the Year in the 2018 Best of the Best Awards. Tidwell’s persistent push to create a more sturdy sense of community is assisted by a core group of about 15 volunteers at Antioch for Youth & Family and 11 active members of the board of directors. A majority of the volunteers are over age 60. Tidwell, a Fort Smith native, is in her early 70s. “You can’t outwork her and you can’t outserve her,” said Michael Helm, a former Sparks Health System president and and the current vice chairman of the Antioch for Youth & Family board of directors. Helm and his wife, Barbara, have been friends with Tidwell for more than 40 years. Antioch does not offer a salary for its executive director, Helm noted. Tidwell’s service is completely volunteer. “She always puts in and never takes out,” Helm added. “She gives all she has but she doesn’t ask anyone to give all they have. Her characteristic grit and determination is what prompted Robert Miller, Antioch chairman, to help her establish the pantry’s first footprint on North 11th Street.” Fort Smith Mayor-elect George McGill grew
up in the same Fort Smith neighborhood with Tidwell and can recall her as a 12-year-old girl helping his mother, a social worker, round up toys from department stores for needy families. “She’s a phenomenal giver of her time, her energy and her resources, like none I’ve ever seen,” McGill said. “And that didn’t start overnight. There’s no challenge too big for her. She’s never judgmental and she treats everyone the same. She will always take a stand for something that takes away from those less fortunate, even if she is the only one standing.” Tidwell “flows like water,” McGill added, “settling at the lowest point where there is the most need.” “She always stops for those in need,” McGill said. “In our society, not everyone does that. It’s more than they can stand.” McGill said completing the Antioch Community Pantry on North 32nd Street has been a challenge for Tidwell, but she will get it done. “We should all want to say ‘I helped her,’” McGill said. “If there is any bandwagon to get on it is the one she is on. We need more people to step up.” In addition to her service with Antioch, Tidwell also works closely with youth programs and Sebastian County Drug Court to mentor young people. She visits local schools for a variety of reasons, but recently she has been teaching students about the U.S. Constitution. She has master’s de —CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE—

side condemning them, and people on the other side saying they can’t take on another issue. The elderly and children get caught in the middle … I’m still a believer that community is what we need to bring back. It matters to me.” On any given day, Tidwell can be found picking up fruits and vegetables from a variety of sources to sort and distribute. Some items are donated from major supporters like Walmart, Harps OK Foods, or Tyson Foods and the River Valley Regional Food Bank. When donations are not available, she procures food from a variety of sources she has networked with over the years. Antioch feeds as many as 12,000 or more people in any given month in the Fort Smith region. As noted at their website, it is an “all-volunteer, nonprofit effort to serve western Arkansas with community solutions through persistence and partnerships.” Their food pantry provides over 800,000 meals in a community where one in five people are food insecure. Senior and veterans mobile pantries deliver food to low-income elderly, disabled and struggling families. For her efforts in both community development and feeding the hungry, she was awarded in April with the President’s Award from the Arkansas Democratic Black Caucus during its 14th annual King-Kennedy Dinner in Little Rock. In June, she was also named to the board of directors for the
grees in both nursing and education. “Charolette is always looking for opportunities to encourage young people,” Helm said. “Charolette is not in this for Charolette. She saw the need and she answered the call.” Helm noted Tidwell “had a remarkable nursing career” and “was the first minority nursing director at Sparks” who “blazed a trail” for others. For Tidwell, both children and seniors have become a primary focus because they are often caught in the middle when a family falls apart for any number of reasons. With generous donations of food, particularly from Walmart, Antioch has been able to reach out into schools to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to every elementary school where the school meal program participation rate exceeds 70 percent. Nearly 70 percent of the 14,684 students for 2018-19 school year in Fort Smith Public Schools are eligible for free or reduced lunches. In the previous two school years, 76 percent of Fort Smith students were eligible for the program, according to data from the Arkansas Department of Education. While community development and education are goals, fresh fruits and vegetables are the building blocks for Tidwell. Before any foundational advancements can be made with children, she says “you have to feed them PLACE TO WORK first.” Tidwell and her team of volunteers help teach young people how to behave and live, but they also aim to show them how to cook, preserve and store foods. Together, Tidwell and the volunteers oversee a community garden at North Seventh and L Streets, a food distribution center on North 11th Street, and the Antioch Community Pantry with a nutrition ARCBEST learning center under development 8401 McClure Dr., Fort Smith on North 32nd Street in Fort Smith. Jody’s Auto Center
{INDEPENDENT} best AUTO SERVICE & REPAIR
AND TOWING SERVICES
Keeping Fort Smith moving forward, one fixed car at a time “We love being a part of what’s positive and moves Fort Smith forward,” said Joseph Rupe, vice president of Jody’s Auto Service Centers, located in Fort Smith and Van Buren. Serving the Fort Smith area since 1984, Jody’s Auto is committed to “hard work, great service and (doing) what’s right,” Rupe said. Their goal is to make the lives of owners and fleet managers easier, he said. The doors were opened after Joseph’s dad, Jody Rupe, was able to borrow money against his portion of the family farm to purchase the shop, Rupe said. Rupe was about 3 years old when his dad opened his doors for business. “I never thought I would come back and work for the family business, Rupe said. After obtaining a marketing degree from the University of Arkansas, he came to the realization that hard work pays off in the small family business setting, whereas in the corporate setting the
market dictates employment. One could have a good job one day and no job the next, Rupe said. Over the last five to seven years, Rupe has gradually taken over most of the running of the business, he said. Since Jody Rupe opened the original three-bay muffler shop at 3015 Towson Ave. in Fort Smith, the company has expanded to three locations. They also have locations at 810 Phoenix Ave. in Fort Smith and 1520 Fayetteville Rd. in Van Buren. The services offered at Jody’s include complete automotive care, tire sales, towing and free pickup and delivery services, Joseph Rupe said. Despite the changes that have been incorporated at Jody’s Auto over the years, “the backbone of this business remains the same — hard work, great service and always (doing) what’s right.” The difference between Jody’s Auto and their competitors is “our customer service, honesty and pick-

up and delivery service,” as well as being a “one stop shop.” Jody’s takes care of thousands of people per year, Rupe said. When you run into those people out in the community, you want to feel good about what the work you have done for them, he said. They try to instil that attitude into all of their employees, Rupe said. “Getting the right people in the right places is key to the company’s growth and what we’ve have been able to do the last few years.”
Rather than expand the business beyond the three locations, Rupe said they are trying to improve their current services and take better care of people. The current focus is to streamline their office and administrative duties and make them more efficient so the experience for their customers can be as smooth as possible. Settle & Jernigan Law Firm
best ATTORNEY
From left to right: Candice Settle, Carrie Jernigan and Lauren Clark of Settle & Jernigan, PLLC at 2501 Fayetteville Road in Van Buren,
Boutique law firm provides personal focus Settle & Jernigan Law Firm was selected as the River Valley’s top choice for Attorney Services for the second year in a row in the Times Record’s annual Best of the Best reader’s choice competition. Candice Settle, Carrie Jernigan and Lauren Clark make up the gifted legal team of Settle & Jernigan, PLLC. The three locally-raised women regularly take on numerous cases across Crawford and Sebastian counties. Settle & Jernigan Law Firm was established in 2013. From there, these women set out to become the River Valley’s No. 1 choice for legal representation. Carrie Jernigan told the Times Record that they viewed this award as a huge honor. “We work so hard every day for our clients and it is nice to see that hard work pay off,” Jernigan said.
Candice Settle and Carrie Jernigan both graduated from University of Arkansas Law School. Together, they offer more than 21 years of experience in practicing law. Lauren Clark is a first-rate addition to the team and has been practicing law for the last four years. Jernigan said that they all knew they wanted to be attorneys from a young age. “We grew up with a love of community and helping others so this boutique law firm is a great fit,” Jernigan said. Boutique law firms specialize in one or several related areas of the law. They tend to be smaller than general practice firms and their attorneys offer more specialized experiences. Many people seek out boutique legal services because of their reputation for more personal focus, or even to get great recommendations for rep-
utable law firms that handle something outside of their niche. Settle & Jernigan Law Firm doesn’t represent big businesses or insurance companies. The firm specializes in a few different areas, including personal injury cases, such as car accidents, wrongful deaths and inattentive drivers. They also handle all types of domestic and criminal work, along with an extensive amount of employment law cases. They pride themselves on giving clients a level of individual attention that can be difficult to find these days. “We love the River Valley and the people in it…we work so hard each day to find justice for our clients,” Jernigan said. Settle & Jernigan Law Firm attorneys pledge to fight for their client’s best interest in all things. They
work with their clients to get the best possible outcome for their situation. Mike Carroll Tree Service & Landscape
top TREE SERVICE
Mike Carroll Tree Service was named among the top-three businesses for tree service in the River Valley area for the 2018 Best of the Best. The team also offers a range of exterior services, including rock and landscaping work. Owner Mike Carroll said, “I want the public to know how much we appreciate the confidence they have in us, and we will work hard every day to give them the best service possible.”
Thanks to happy clients, tree service blossums Mike Carroll has always been interested in biology and science, and his study of arboriculture has allowed him to pursue a career in those fields. With 22 years of experience, Carroll and his wife Rachel started Mike Carroll Tree Service and Landscape in Fort Smith in 2016, which specializes in tree service and removal, including stump grinding. They also offer landscape design and installation, drainage work, commercial and residential irrigation systems, topsoil and sod, retaining walls, and wood fence installation and repair. “We started out just offering tree service, and it is still our primary business,” Carroll said. “We have been able to grow and provide a wide
range of other services.” Arboriculture is the cultivation, management and study of individual trees, shrubs, vines and other perennial woody plants. Carroll says he believes his knowledge of arboriculture has helped his business stand apart from competitors. Arborists are like tree surgeons. They specialize in pruning, trimming and removing trees. It’s not often that you can get someone who understands those details and also offers full landscaping and exterior maintenance for your home. That knowledge only improves the overall service customers get, according to Carroll. On top of the expertise, person-
alizing the work and care for each customer is an important part of the business. “Each customer has individual needs and concerns,” Carroll said. “They want to be treated with a personal touch that does not make them feel like a number. We give each customer a personal touch.” This approach has paid off in multiple ways. They have a 5 out 5 star review performance on Facebook. Here’s a sampling: “What a team — professional and prompt. Delightful and hard working!” “Mike Carroll and his crew always amaze us! So professional and excellent at what they do and so kind and friendly!”
“These guys are prompt, professional, well-mannered and courteous — and their prices fit our budget.” Mike Carroll Tree Service and Landscape was also named among the top three businesses for tree services in the River Valley for 2018. They offer free estimates, are licensed and insured, and are experienced in storm damage and insurance claims. Carroll attributes the business’ success to his wife, Rachel. “She is my person. My life,” he said. Carroll said they have been surprised by the growth their business has experienced, and they are considering adding additional services such as roofing, siding and gutters.

Cox provides advanced digital video, internet, telephone, home security and automation services. They are they third largest U.S. cable company and serve approximately 6 million residences. In Fort Smith alone they employ more than 100 people; in Arkansas more than 300. Despite their size as a large, nationwide company, the local staff and philosophy helps the team operate with a local feel. “Our local employees make it a priority to be involved in the community,” Whitney Yoder with Cox Public Affairs said. “Our employees make all the difference. They provide top-notch service to the Fort Smith area.” This focus and dedication has paid off. River Valley residents voted Cox Communications as the best

cable provider in the River Valley area for 2018. “We really are grateful to operate in the Fort Smith area, and appreciate the support we receive from our customers and the community. We look forward to continuing the partnerships we’ve formed,” Yoder said. There’s more exciting developments for both Cox and their customers. By early 2019 Fort Smith will be a GIG city. This means that all residential households within the service area will have access to Gig speeds through the Cox G1GABLAST product, Yoder said. “That’s something that many major metropolitan areas still can’t tout,” Yoder said. At the heart of the business, Cox is a technology company, Yoder said, adding, “Cox continues to evolve at a rapid speed to remain at the front in terms of technology, products and services.”

Escape the day-to-day at the River Valley’s favorite casino A local casino and resort offers an escape from the normal routine with an exciting combination of gaming, fun, and live entertainment. Choctaw Casino & Resort – Pocola was again voted for the second straight year as the Best Casino in the Times Record’s Best of the Best readers’ choice competition. The staff at Choctaw Casino & Resort – Pocola are grateful to be recognized by the people of Fort Smith and surrounding areas. “Our team works hard to deliver exceptional guest experiences and we are constantly working to improve services so we exceed expectations,” said marketing director Dale Robertson. As the property has grown and expanded, so has their team, Robertson added. Choctaw Casino & Resort – Pocola has approximately 700 associ-
ates who work on the property. Originally opened in 1994 as a Smoke Shop and Bingo Hall, Choctaw Casino has undergone three expansions, which added the hotel tower, restaurants, and shops, ultimately transforming it into the Choctaw Casino & Resort that guests enjoy today. The last renovations were completed in May 2013, but that doesn’t mean the Choctaw Casino & Resort – Pocola has stopped finding ways to grow and stay on top of the game. News attractions include: • In August they began offering ball and dice games. They now offer craps and roulette with a ball. • They are always evolving their restaurant options. One of newest items on the horizon will be the expansion of our new buffet menu to in-
clude lobster night, seafood night, fiesta night with a flare of Mexican cuisine, Italian night with tasteful pasta. Choctaw Casino & Resort also provides an area for horse racing enthusiasts, with big-screen TV’s and a large video wall for watching all the major horse racing events in the U.S. This section provides wagering carrels and self-service terminals that allow guests to place bets in real-time. Choctaw Casino is designed for fun and entertainment. Fans of live music will enjoy their entertainment and dining venues, such as the Oak Tree Lounge or Gilley’s Western Nightclub. Choctaw Casino’s CenterStage Event Center continues to draw in many big names in the music industry. In addition to the live entertainment
and gaming, Choctaw Casino has several restaurants, a coffee shop/ café and a gift shop. Choctaw Casino & Resort – Pocola also offers guests a lovely hotel in which to relax and count their winnings. Guests may choose between 118 fully furnished rooms, featuring refrigerators, microwaves, desks and a separate seating area. Choctaw Resort offers king rooms, with an impressive king-size bed, and Double Queen Rooms that are perfect for small families and groups looking for a weekend getaway. Enjoy free cable programming on a flat-screen TV, connect with the complimentary wireless internet, or simply soak in the large shower/tub combo in the room’s private bathroom. The luxury hotel is connected to the casino for maximum convenience.

HOTEL OR RESORT, CONCERT VENUE AND BUFFET
Residents praise entertaining, dining at Cherokee Casino Offering top-notch entertainment options and luxury comforts, a local favorite took the title for River Valley’s No. 1 choice for “home away from home” for the second year in a row. This year Cherokee Casino was also dubbed the fan favorite for buffets and the No. 1 choice for a local concert venue. Cherokee Casino & Hotel Roland was voted as among the top three choices for casinos and best places to go dancing. Lee Creek Tavern, within Cherokee Casino, was also voted among the top three places to listen to live music. Overall, the public has shown its praise for one of the area’s best casinos in the area, offering great food, live entertainment and 24-hour gaming. General Manager Chad McReynolds told Times Record that the people of Cherokee Casino & Hotel Roland are very appreciative of this honor. Most of the employees are Cherokee and long-time residents of the area, McReynolds said. Cherokee Nation Entertainment is a Tribal company, entirely owned by the Cherokee Nation and it has become one of the fastest growing entertainment companies in Oklahoma. “This isn’t just a job, it’s something that contributes to the health of the Nation,” McReynolds said. He added that based on feedback from their customers, Cherokee Casino is a top-choice for entertainment in the area.
“Our No. 1 feedback is that it’s a Vegas-like experience right here is Eastern Oklahoma and Western Arkansas,” McReynolds said. Cherokee Casino offers a variety of gaming options with 850 electronic gaming machines and 10 table games, including the area’s most exciting live roulette and craps tables. Just off the casino floor is The Buffet, the Casino’s in-house restaurant that showcases a variety of ethnic favorites. Their Italian, Asian, Mexican and comfort stations give their guests a variety of options at a bargain price. “Nothing in the area really compares, you could eat here every day for a week and never have the same thing twice,” McReynolds said. The Cherokee Casino’s streamlined design allows incoming guests to see the gaming floor, The Buffet, and the live entertainment venue from the front entrance. “It feels like you just walked into a party,” McReynolds said. The real party happens on the Lee Creek Tavern Stage, featuring celebrity entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. The tavern has hosted many big names in the music industry, such as Lorrie Morgan, Tanya Tucker and Billy Ray Cyrus. Lee Creek Tavern also offers an assortment of spirits and specialty drinks. Cherokee Casino & Hotel Roland is the tallest structure in the area, topping out at six-stories with

more than 120 non-smoking rooms to choose from, including twelve luxury suites. The extravagant rooms are decked out in plush red décor, 47” plasma screens and sizable bathrooms. The hotel’s valet and parking garage, along with the complimentary high speed internet access are made readily available for their guests’ convenience. “We’re in the guest service business, and we really strive to take care of our guests’ needs before they even think to ask,” McReynolds said. According to McReynolds, the
$80 million expansion project three years ago was centered around better equipping them to cater to their guests. The renovations also included an outdoor pool with an extra-large hot tub, along with a fully-equipped fitness center and business center. “You’re not going to get a better deal than the amenities and services we offer, and if you haven’t come and checked us out yet you really need to,” Reynolds said. Both the casino and the hotel are open seven days a week for 365 days a year.

Staying focused on what matters most Every customer is treated like family at Harry Robinson Buick GMC, said Cathy Nesbit, Social Media Director for the dealership. They are treated “like our family wants to be treated,” she said. “We help them rather than sell them.” This is just one of the many reasons Harry Robinson Buick GMC was voted the 2018 Best of the Best for both New and Used Auto Dealerships among the large dealer category. The Harry Robinson Collision Center was also voted the best Collision/Body Shop among the Dealer category. When customers support Harry Robinson Buick GMC, they are “supporting a business that supports their community,” Nesbit said. Con-

sequently, the dealership is then able to invest more back into the community. A big supporter of education, and particularly, school athletic programs, Harry Robinson Buick GMC has provided score boards, school resource vehicles and gas gift cards for teachers and assisted with various programs for schools throughout the River Valley. They also help with the Community Clearinghouse; Ronald McDonald House; Girls, Inc.; Children’s Emergency Shelter and more. Harry Robinson gained such appreciation from his employer and mentor, Dick Durham, when he was selling cars for Durham in the late 1970s and early 1980s, that Durham
wanted to help Robinson obtain his own dealership, Nesbit said. In 1984, with Durham’s help, Robinson realized his goal of owning his own dealership and opened Harry Robinson Buick GMC in Fort Smith. “Technology has completely redefined the way folks shop for vehicles,” Nesbit said. It has also changed the way technicians work on vehicles and how customers want to be contacted. Whether shopping for that new, or new to you, vehicle, everything can be completed online, leaving only the test drive and paperwork to the live visit, Nesbit said. “Tech-friendly shopping (at HarryRobinson.com) is always up-todate,” the website notes.
With 84 employees on staff, Harry Robinson Buick GMC is ready to assist all customers, whether their shopping is practically completed online or they prefer to shop live at the dealership, Nesbit said. Management at Harry Robinson Buick GMC includes Robinson’s three daughters. Serving as general manager is Renee Robinson-Durham; Amanda Mendenhall functions as service manager and Sara Robinson manages the permanent records department. The Harry Robinson difference is “we’re locally owned, Harry’s here” and they love and are committed to the River Valley community, she said.

Greg’s Too Car Care Center
Greg Whitsitt has seen a lot of changes take place in the community over the years, but he prides himself on forbidding one aspect of his business to alter. In Whitsitt’s words, the customer always is the priority at Greg’s Too Care Care Center, which is located at 6800 Phoenix Ave. and offers automotive repair, a wrecker service and more. Whitsitt and his 21 employees see an average of 25 vehicles per day, which makes for steady work and frequent opportunities to build customer-employee relations. “We also have one to two employees we sent to training every month,” he said. “Training is an extremely important aspect of automotive repair, because mechanics are constantly changing. I have 15 computers in my shop to maintain the ability to work on the vehicles of today.” Greg’s Too also provides service to diesel vehicles and is AAA-approved for emergency roadside service and auto repair. Diversity is what helps Greg’s Too stand out from competitors, Whitsitt said. “We take care of all of the FedEx vehicles, the post office vehicles and ambulances here,” he said. “We also take care of law-enforcement vehicles from the Sebastian County

Customer relations and training keep business thriving
Taking a leap of faith to expand his business has paid off for Greg Whitsitt, owner of Greg’s Too. His auto service business was voted among the topthree best businesses for the independent - auto service and repair category and for towing services in the the 2018 Best of the Best contest.
Sheriff ’s Department, as well as the Lavaca and Barling police departments. We do stay busy.” Whitsitt’s business originally opened at the former Tidy Car Wash at 46th Street and Rogers Avenue. The business was called Greg’s Exxon and had seven employees. “It took about six years and we ran out of room there, so we moved to
the area across from Creekmore Park — that area that has some businesses,” said Whitsitt, a 1978 Southside High School graduate. “We stayed there for seven or eight years.” With both his staff and his ambition growing, Whitsitt relocated his business to its current location on Phoenix Avenue in 1996. He said he eventually felt “great” about the
move after wrestling with his nerves. “I was the first person to build anything on the new Phoenix Avenue extension,” Whitsitt said with a smile. “When I built this place, I stood out on the front sidewalk for 90 minutes.” Whitsitt then paused for a couple of seconds. “While I stood there, I counted two vehicles that drove past,” he said with a laugh. “That scared me to death. Yes, I can remember that moment like it was yesterday.” Whitsitt said he felt fortunate that his customers have increased each year. “Our business has flourished because we make a grand effort to take care of the customers,” he said. “And it’s gratifying for us to make customers happy. When you make someone happy, you also make them confident. A happy customer is a confident person because they know you are taking care of them.” When asked to give advice to customers, Whitsitt was quick to answer. “Try to make a relationship with the shop you use, and stick with that shop,” he said. “Never feel that you cannot ask questions. You should always feel comfortable.”
