Welcome to the Alma Area! It is an exciting time and our community is full of potential and opportunity for growth! Over the years, community leaders have invested in our community and have given us a solid foundation on which our future will grow and thrive. Our individual communities each have unique personalities and our three school districts are investing in the leaders of our future. Together, we have a winning combination that will make the Alma Area a fantastic area for families to live in and grow. Last year, our community pulled together to create an action plan of community and economic development. What seemed like a dream last year is now coming to fruition as community leaders are stepping up and taking ownership of this five-year plan. There are many things to be thankful for in the Alma Area. I am constantly amazed by the facilities and classes offered by the Alma School District. There is a long-standing tradition of excellence that has been passed down through the years to the current teachers and administration. Although our population is much smaller, you will see Alma always competing for excellence with the largest schools in our state. Over the next year, several community-supported projects will be completed to improve our streets, including the downtown streetscape on Fayetteville Ave. Downtown beautification is one of the areas that the community decided needed to be a top priority in the five-year action plan. A thriving downtown revitalizes a community by creating a public hub that reconnects citizens. We already see this connection at our Farmers’ Market and Public Library. The Farmers’ Market provides a place for the community to reconnect with its food source by buying the freshest fruits and vegetables directly from the local grower. Every year, the Farmers’ Market holds community-wide events that draw people back to downtown for fun events like the Chili Cook-off and Weenie Dog Dash. Our public library offers dozens of free classes on a weekly basis that support public health and development: physically, socially, intellectually and emotionally. Alma was recently recognized as a Growing Healthy Community by Arkansas Coalition for Obesity Prevention. This culture of health permeates the overall attitude of our community. We are blessed to live in an area of the United States with such natural beauty. Lake Alma Trail provides a setting to reconnect with nature for a couple of hours as you hike or take advantage of the disc golf course. The future looks to bring even more possibilities to this area that overlooks the Alma Aquatic Park. Whether you are looking for a day trip or a place to relocate, the Alma Area has much to offer families. The Communities that make up the Alma Area have something for everyone. Explore the towns and cities to discover the place that fits your personality and the needs of your family. Regardless of your individual preferences, our community is stronger together. What is good for one of our Alma Area cities has a positive ripple effect that benefits the other communities and school districts. • Alma School District • City of Alma • City of Dyer • City of Mountainburg • City of Mulberry • Mountainburg Public Schools • Mulberry / Pleasant View Schools • Town of Chester The Alma Area Chamber of Commerce would like to encourage and invite you to be part of the movement toward positive community growth and development. It will take all of us working together to help our community reach its best and strongest potential. We are entering a time when our cities are being led by servant leaders and well-trained police and fire departments that keep our community safe and progressively moving forward. Give us a call to be connected to others striving to move our communities toward positive change. Best Regards, Marilyn Sneed Interim Director Alma Area Chamber of Commerce

Mountainburg

A total of 631 people live in the city limits of Mountainburg, but thousands more residents in the surrounding hills and valleys call Mountainburg home. There are untold thousands of others that grew up here and now live in other cities and states but still consider Mountainburg their hometown. It’s just that kind of place. From the beauty of the Boston Mountains to the lake and streams that flow through our valley, it’s easy to be proud to call Mountainburg your home. As our town logo says, it’s “A Paradise to Share,” and those of us that are fortunate enough to live here welcome all visitors to come share our paradise here on earth.

Mulberry

The city of Mulberry is located east of Alma and here in Mulberry our desire is for you to be compelled to experience the beauty of our area and hospitality of our people in person by stopping for a visit or by viewing information about us at cityofmulberry.org. In real estate terms, the three most important aspects of an area are location, location, and location. Mulberry is truly in one of the best locations in our country. Outdoor recreation abounds with the Arkansas River as our southern border, the nationally known Mulberry River on our eastern border, the Boston Mountains/Ozark National Forest just north of our city limits, and easy access to Fort Smith, Fayetteville, and Tulsa on our western side. Interstate 40, which connects the east coast with the west coast, provides two exits, 20 and 24, to the city of Mulberry. We are just 8 miles from where Interstate 49 will connect Canada to the Gulf Coast at New Orleans. With the Union Pacific Railroad and barge capability on the Arkansas River, our area is poised to be a huge distribution and warehouse center for all of central USA. Mulberry is also home to the only Edamame processing plant in the USA which is dedicated to processing locally grown and commercially harvested Edamame. We pride ourselves in being a healthy community with healthy lifestyles. If you are looking for a low tax, safe location to start or relocate your business, Mulberry is the place for you. Our schools are noted for accomplishments such as producing one of the highest percentages of scholarship dollars for graduating students in our area. Marvin Elementary is one of nine schools in our state that achieved exemplary status this past year plus many more awards. Our Parks and Recreation Department maintains six parks in the city which provide outdoor exercise and enjoyment to many people. We are a community of faith, which is evidenced by our many churches representing various denominations and independent organizations. Come and see our city for yourself. You are always welcome in Mulberry! - Mayor Gary Baxter

Performing Arts Center

The Alma Performing Arts Center is a facility shared by the Alma Education and Arts Foundation and the Alma School District. The facility includes a full stage theatre with more than 1,500 seats, black box theatre space with fluid seating capabilities, visual art gallery, greenroom and kitchen, dressing rooms, laundry room, build shop, costume shop, box office and staff offices. The AEAF is a non-profit organization that strives to encourage post-secondary education, promote education in the arts and provide arts exposure to the local community.

Alma Farmers’ Market

The Alma Farmers Market is a popular attraction during the growing season. Located at the historic Berry Shed, the farmers’ market can easily accommodate over 20 vendors and offers restroom facilities, electricity, cover and ample parking inside the split-rail fence that borders the property. The market opens for business the first Saturday in May and runs through the last Saturday in October from 8 a.m. to noon each Saturday. The market strictly adheres to the state of Arkansas’ guidelines for farmers’ markets and what the vendors can and can’t sell. Items that have been sold in the past at the farmers market, and should be making a return this year, include fibers, baked goods, produce, goat’s milk soap and honey. One benefit the Alma market holds over other farmers’ markets is the fact it accepts SNAP benefits as well as EBT cards. 16 - ALMA CHAMBER

State Park Lake Fort Smith State Park is nestled in a scenic valley of the Boston Mountain Range of the Ozark Mountains. This state park is on the western side of 1,400-acre Lake Fort Smith. Here you can enjoy outdoor adventures including camping, fishing, kayaking, swimming, mountain biking, hiking, and nature study. For backpackers, the park serves as the western terminus of the 165-mile Ozark Highlands National Recreation Trail. The park features campsites (20 Class AAA and 10 Class B), group facilities including a dining hall and two group lodges with kitchenettes that can accommodate up to 32 persons (16 in each wing) each, 10 cabins, picnic sites, a pavilion, 2,660-squarefoot swimming pool with adjacent wading pool and a splash pad, marina with boat rentals, double lane boat launch ramp, hiking trails and a playground. The park’s 8,000-square-foot visitor center includes exhibits, a meeting/classroom and an outdoor patio featuring native stone, a wood-burning fireplace and a lake view. The exhibit gallery tells the stories of how, through time, good water made this valley a place of hope, faith and sacrifice. The gallery includes a log cabin, covered wagon, re-created Shepherd Spring and a diorama of the lake. Many exhibits are handson and some contain live education animals. Families with children will enjoy spending time here discovering the natural and cultural history of the area. A theater features a 16-minute video that further tells the park’s story and will connect you to the water resources of this valley. Interpretive programs are offered in the park throughout the year by the park staff. These activities include cruises and kayak tours on the lake, hikes, outdoor workshops and more. From its original location, Lake Fort Smith State Park was relocated to this site on the lake’s western side due to the enlarging of Lake Fort Smith and Lake Shepherd Springs into a single reservoir to provide additional water storage for the future needs of the municipal water supply serving Fort Smith, Arkansas. The park opened at this new site in May 2008. The design of the park’s facilities evokes the architectural style of the WPA facilities constructed in the 1930s that were featured in the original park. For park details or to book campsite, cabin or group overnight reservations online, visit ArkansasStateParks.com/LakeFortSmith. Campsite reservations can

Lake Alma Whether you’re a parent looking for an easy day hike to introduce your children to the gentle pleasures of nature or a trail runner looking for a heart-throbbing, rock-hopping, scrambling good time, Lake Alma Trail is for you! Chuck Dovish, of Exploring Arkansas with AETN, said, “It’s amazing that so much variety and diversity of scenery is found right inside the town of Alma.” Step onto this little 4-mile trail and your eyes are in for a treat. You’ll see bluff lines and moss-covered boulder fields up close. You’ll walk beside clear streams, rocky cascades and small waterfalls. Situated within a diverse mixed hardwood forest, you may spot deer, rabbit, fox, great blue heron and a variety of songbirds. Watch your step and give right-of-way to the many terrapin turtles that call Lake Alma home. On any given day you’ll find families out for a stroll or a nature walk and picnic lunch at McWater Falls, just twentyminutes into the trail. Said one father, “I want my kids to know how beautiful and fragile our environment is. When they see Little Frog Bayou and realize this is the source of our drinking water, they’ll become caretakers and protectors of places like this.” History buffs will enjoy exploring rock structures located just past mile one. Mystery surrounds the “when” and “why” of these structures which include a small hexagon rock house with fireplace. Continue down the trail and you’re likely to encounter trail runners soaring up “little bluff scramble” and churning around the whole loop in preparation for competition. “I love this trail! It allows for an intense workout in a short amount of time and the scenery makes even the hills enjoyable!” said Tommy Griffin, a local runner. Hike early and you’ll see locals trotting slowly and carefully along the rockier paths preparing for future marathons or just enjoying a morning workout and quick dose of nature. The beginnings of Lake Alma Trail can be traced to longtime resident, Harry McWater. The idea of a trail around the lake occurred to him during the late 1990s as a member of the Alma City Council. He mentioned the possibility

several times only to be told that money for such a project wasn’t available. But soon after that, during a conversation with the mayor, he asked, “What if I ďŹ nd volunteers to get that hiking trail built?â€? Then-Mayor John Ballentine said, “Go for it!â€? With that, Harry sought expertise and labor from the Arkansas Master Naturalists, Ozark Highlands Trail Association and local volunteers, including Alma School District student organizations and scout troops. Students were enthusiastic about the project. Nathanael Mickelson, then a senior student council member, said, “I can’t believe I have a hiking trail three minutes from my house!â€? The actual work began in March of 2012 and the forward momentum that followed was undeniable. Since that time well over one-hundred pairs of helping hands have spent time making this trail a reality. Volunteers blazed and cleared the route. There was side-hilling, raking and general cleanup to be done. With each workday, a deeper beauty was revealed. As the route became established, hikers’ feet helped ďŹ rm up the tread and keep it open. One volunteer said, “It’s like remodeling your kitchen. You use it before it’s ďŹ nished. Maybe it’s never really ďŹ nished.â€? The work continues as constant improvements are made. The best trail maintenance is use! Give your concrete-weary feet a break or drop the cumbersome baggage of civilization for a few hours. Relax beside a clear, cool stream or let your mind wonder about the early inhabitants of the “hexagon house.â€? Whatever your reason, Lake Alma Trail is ready to greet you in all its beauty and variety. To get there, take Alma Exit 13 off I-40, then drive north on Hwy 71 to the ďŹ rst light. Turn right onto Collum Lane East then left onto Mountain Grove Road. Go north past the Alma water tanks on the left then a quick left into a picnic area. The trail begins at the ďŹ shing dock. Walk the paved Nature Trail north with the lake to your left. The Lake Alma Trailhead is at the north end of the paved trail where it turns sharply back toward the picnic area. Read the information sign built and installed by volunteers with some help from the City of Alma. If you hike the whole 4-mile trail, you’ll come back to the ďŹ shing dock from across the dam. A shorter family-friendly hike is the 40-minute walk to the waterfall and back. To get more information about Lake Alma Trail and volunteer opportunities, follow updates from the Lake Alma Trail Facebook page.
