Welcome to the Alma Area! The Alma Area Chamber of Commerce would love to welcome you to the beautiful part of Arkansas we call home! The mission of the Alma Area Chamber of Commerce is to advocate, connect and create an environment in which our local businesses and organizations can thrive and prosper. Our vision is to make Alma and the surrounding areas very special places to live, work, and play. This area is currently enjoying a time of exciting growth, and that growth is opening doors of opportunity for businesses, individuals and families coming to the area to grow and thrive along with us as valuable, successful members of our community. The cities of Alma, Mountainburg, Mulberry, Dyer, and the Town of Chester make up the Alma Area. Each community is beautiful and unique with its own strengths and each one is working hard to grow the area into a solid region of business growth and family recreation at the intersection of U.S. Interstate 40 and Arkansas Highway 71. Each community realizes that as it grows stronger, so does the entire region which, in turn, helps each community. The cooperation shown by each community is evident in the success we are enjoying. The work of these communities has been vital to the process of creating strong educational opportunities for families and substantial housing as well as business opportunities that keep the area on a positive path to success. Public safety is also a priority in the Alma Area with well-trained police and fire departments in each community that maintain a professional working relationship with other law enforcement agencies, such as the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office. Several years ago, community leaders began formulating plans that would help trigger revitalization, plans that would help the area grow economically while maintaining a “home-town” feel. Alma’s growth can be seen in two recently completed major street improvement projects. Currently underway is a third major project, the Streetscape Project on Fayetteville Avenue, which rungs through downtown Alma. This project will be completed this year and sets the stage for making the downtown hub a showpiece in not just Alma, but the Arkansas River Valley as well. The area surrounding Fayetteville avenue will continue to be anchored by a growing Farmer’s Market and the Alma Public Library, one of five libraries in the Crawford County Library System. On the southern end of Fayetteville avenue is the City of Alma Municipal Complex and Alma High School featuring the Performing Arts Center. We understand the importance of a thriving downtown area and know that it will become the heartbeat of our community once again. Our residents become more enthused as progress continues being made to utilize this area of our city. People will come from all over the region to visit the area, shop and enjoy the city’s new and improved downtown. Visitors and residents alike will also soon be enjoying two new additions to the city’s new parks lineup. Construction begins later this year for a four-acre dog park and, right across the street, an almost fifty-acre park that will include a stage, butterfly garden and learning centers for students from all over the region to enjoy. Alma also offers many other opportunities for getting out and taking in the beautiful Western Arkansas scenery, most notably the Lake Alma Trail system and the lake itself. Improvements are currently underway that will make the trails around Lake Alma accessible for hikers, runners and mountain bikes. These renovations, which will rival any in the state, will be the perfect complement to the disc golf course already in place at Lake Alma. The area around the lake overlooks the Alma Aquatic Park, which is the only one of its kind in the area. Each summer thousands of people come to the Alma Aquatic Park to enjoy its slides, pools, water toys and upgraded picnic area. While the Alma School District may not be among the largest in the State of Arkansas, it competes successfully not only in academics but also athletics and boasts some of the best facilities in the state. The Alma Performing Arts Center shared by the Alma School District with the Alma Education and Arts Foundation, which annually brings in a variety of top artists from all over the United States for residents to enjoy. The district’s long-standing tradition of excellence has been passed down through the years by an administration, staff and school board that continually strive to make the education of each student a priority. The student-first approach is also shared by the other two school districts in the area – Mountainburg and Mulberry/Pleasant View – which helps foster the sense of family that is a strong characteristic of the Alma Area. We are fortunate to live in an area that has three successful school districts, each one providing amenities to students that seem to encompass a vast array of interests and needs similar to those in much larger cities. The Alma Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to come explore the town and cities of the Alma Area. We’re sure you’ll find a place that’s the perfect fit for you and your family, a place that’s the perfect fit for any business opportunity you may be considering. We want you to be part of the positive growth we’re experiencing, and we want you to help us build on that growth. We believe that soon after you get here you will join us in being happy to call the Alma Area “home.” Sincerely, Shelly Faught Executive Director Alma Area Chamber of Commerce Corner of Cherry St & Fayetteville Ave. 479-632-4127

Mountainburg
A total of 631 people live in the city limits of Mountainburg, but thousands more residing in the surrounding hills and valleys call Mountainburg home. There are untold thousands of others that grew up here and now live in other cities and states but still consider Mountainburg their hometown. It’s just that kind of place. From the beauty of the Boston Mountains to the lake and streams that flow through our valley, it’s easy to be proud to call Mountainburg your home. As our town logo says, it’s “A Paradise to Share,” and those of us that are fortunate enough to live here welcome all visitors to come share our paradise here on earth.

Mulberry
The City of Mulberry is located east of Alma and here in Mulberry our desire is for you to be compelled to experience the beauty of our area and hospitality of our people in person by stopping for a visit or by viewing information about us at cityofmulberry.org. In real estate terms, the three most important aspects of an area are location, location, and location. Mulberry is truly in one of the best locations in our country. Outdoor recreation abounds with the Arkansas River as our southern border, the nationally known Mulberry River on our eastern border, the Boston Mountains/Ozark National Forest just north of our city limits, and easy access to Fort Smith, Fayetteville, and Tulsa on our western side. Interstate 40, which connects the east coast with the west coast, provides two exits, 20 and 24, to the city of Mulberry. We are just 8 miles from where Interstate 49 will connect Canada to the Gulf Coast at New Orleans. With the Union Pacific Railroad and barge capability on the Arkansas River, our area is poised to be a huge distribution and warehouse center for all of central USA. Mulberry is also home to the only Edamame processing plant in the USA which is dedicated to processing locally grown and commercially harvested Edamame. We pride ourselves in being a healthy community with healthy lifestyles. If you are looking for a low tax, safe location to start or relocate your business, Mulberry is the place for you. Our schools are noted for accomplishments such as producing one of the highest percentages of scholarship dollars for graduating students in our area. Marvin Elementary is one of nine schools in our state that achieved exemplary status this past year plus many more awards. Our Parks and Recreation Department maintains six parks in the city which provide outdoor exercise and enjoyment to many people. We are a community of faith, which is evidenced by our many churches representing various denominations and independent organizations. Come and see our city for yourself. You are always welcome in Mulberry! - Mayor Gary Baxter

Fireworks and Festivals Visitors can enjoy many festivals throughout the year in the cities that make up the Alma area, including one of the most exciting events: the Crawford County Fair. The fair, which is held annually in the fall at Kirksey Park in nearby Mulberry, offers all the fun, sights and sounds of an old-fashioned fair with carnival rides and concession stands on the midway, live entertainment, livestock judging and displays of a wide variety of handcrafted and hand grown items. There are also many fireworks displays throughout the area that coincide with the Fourth of July holiday.
Christmas Fun Christmas is a wonderful time of the year and Alma and its neighboring cities ring in the holidays with parades and displays of lights that will bring a smile to anyone’s face – young or old. Each year Alma hosts a festive drive-thru display of lights at the Alma Aquatic Park as well as a Christmas parade featuring jolly old Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus. Mulberry and Mountainburg also have wonderful Christmas parades that make the Christmas spirit shine.

Alma Farmers’ Market The Alma Farmers’ Market will be back in a familiar location this year when it returns to the city’s historic Berry Shed next to the red caboose on Fayetteville Avenue. The facility offers accommodations for over 20 vendors under a covered roof during the spring growing season as well as electrical hookups, public restroom facilities and plenty of parking within the split-rail fence that borders the property. The Alma Farmers’ Market strives to give the community a chance to participate firsthand in the farm-to-table movement with individuals being able to purchase the freshest fruits and vegetables directly from local growers. The Alma Farmers’ Market played a big part in the city of Alma recently being recognized as a Growing Healthy Community by the Arkansas Coalition for Obesity Prevention. This culture of health permeates the overall attitude of our community. The Alma Farmers’ Market opens for business the first Saturday in May and runs through the last Saturday in October. It is open from 8 a.m. to noon each Saturday and strictly adheres to the state of Arkansas’ guidelines for farmers’ markets and what exactly the vendors can and can’t sell. In the past vendors at the Alma Farmers’ Market have offered such items as baked goods, produce, goat’s milk soap, honey and natural fiber products.

The exhibit gallery tells the stories of how, through time, good water made this valley a place of hope, faith and sacrifice. Families with children will enjoy spending time here discovering the natural and cultural history of the area. Interpretive programs are offered in the park throughout the year by the park staff. These activities include cruises and kayak tours on the lake, hikes, outdoor workshops and more. From its original location, Lake Fort Smith State Park was relocated to this site on the lake’s western side due to the enlarging of Lake Fort Smith and Lake Shepherd Springs into a single reservoir to provide additional water storage for the future needs of the municipal water supply serving Fort Smith, Arkansas. The park opened at this new site in May 2008. Lake Alma Whether you’re a parent looking for an easy day hike to introduce your children to the gentle pleasures of nature or a trail runner looking for a heart-throbbing, rock-hopping, scrambling good time, Lake Alma Trail is for you! Chuck Dovish, of Exploring Arkansas with AETN, said, “It’s amazing that so much variety and diversity of scenery is found right inside the town of Alma.” Step onto this little 4-mile trail and your eyes are in for a treat. You’ll see bluff lines and moss-covered boulder fields up close. You’ll walk beside clear streams, rocky cascades and small waterfalls. Situated within a diverse mixed hardwood forest, you may spot deer, rabbit, fox, great blue heron and a variety of songbirds. Watch your step and give right-of-way to the many terrapin turtles that call Lake Alma home. On any given day you’ll find families out for a stroll or a nature walk and picnic lunch at McWater Falls, just twentyminutes into the trail. Said one father, “I want my kids to know how beautiful and fragile our environment is. When they see Little Frog Bayou and realize this is the source of our drinking water, they’ll become caretakers and protectors of places like this.” History buffs will enjoy exploring rock structures located just past mile one. Mystery surrounds the “when” and “why” of these structures which include a small hexagon rock house with fireplace. Continue down the trail and you’re likely to encounter trail runners soaring up “little bluff scramble” and churning around the whole loop in preparation for competition. “I love this trail! It allows for an intense workout in a short amount of time and the scenery makes even the hills enjoyable!” said Tommy Griffin, a local runner. Hike early and you’ll see locals trotting slowly and carefully along the rockier paths preparing for future marathons or just enjoying a morning workout and quick dose of nature. The beginnings of Lake Alma Trail can be traced to longtime resident, Harry McWater. The idea of a trail around the lake occurred to him during the late 1990s as a member of the Alma City Council. He mentioned the possibility several times only to be told that money for such a project wasn’t available. But soon after that, during a conversation with the mayor, he asked, “What if I find volunteers to get that hiking trail built?” Then-Mayor John Ballentine said, “Go for it!” With that, Harry sought expertise and labor from the Arkansas Master Naturalists, Ozark Highlands Trail Association and local volunteers, including Alma School District student organizations and scout troops. Students were enthusiastic about the project. Nathanael Mickelson, then a senior student council member, said, “I can’t believe I have a hiking trail three minutes from my house!” The actual work began in March of 2012 and the forward momentum that followed was undeniable. Since that time well over one-hundred pairs of helping hands have spent time making this trail a reality. Volunteers blazed and cleared the route. There was side-hilling, raking and general cleanup to be done. With each workday, a deeper beauty was revealed. As the route became established, hikers’ feet helped firm up the tread and keep it open. One volunteer said, “It’s like remodeling your kitchen. You use it before it’s finished. Maybe it’s never really finished.” The work continues as constant improvements are made. The best trail maintenance is use! Give your concrete-weary feet a break or drop the cumbersome baggage of civilization for a few hours. Relax beside a clear, cool stream or let your mind wonder about the early inhabitants of the “hexagon house.” Whatever your reason, Lake Alma Trail is ready to greet you in all its beauty and variety. To get there, take Alma Exit 13 off I-40, then drive north on Hwy 71 to the first light. Turn right onto Collum Lane East then left onto Mountain Grove Road. Go north past the Alma water tanks on the left then a quick left into a picnic area. The trail begins at the fishing dock. Walk the paved Nature Trail north with the lake to your left. The Lake Alma Trailhead is at the north end of the paved trail where it turns sharply back toward the picnic area. Read the information sign built and installed by volunteers with some help from the City of Alma. If you hike the whole 4-mile trail, you’ll come back to the fishing dock from across the dam. A shorter family-friendly hike is the 40-minute walk to the waterfall and back. To get more information about Lake Alma Trail and volunteer opportunities, follow updates from the Lake Alma Trail Facebook page.
