blend of entertainment, amazing stories of fantastic student-athletes, top award winners, special guests and a great crowd lifted the second annual banquet to new heights. The Best of River Valley Preps event at the Fort Smith Convention center drew the area’s best athletes in an event that included a half hour Question and Answer session with former University of Arkansas great and current Baltimore Ravens starting running back Alex Collins. Collins answered a set of questions from Fort Smith Athletic Director Dr. Darren McKinney, the moderator for the evening. Collins delighted the audience with a little Irish dancing to highlight some of the techniques he uses for training and agility.

Prior to the start of the show, Collins spent a little one-on-one time in the Sparks Health System VIP lounge, where he signed special football memorabilia and took photos with fans. But the real focus of the evening was 350+ student athletes who were honored for their hard ^VYR HUK L_JLSSLUJL IV[O VU HUK VɈ [OL Ă„LSK Top award winners for the night included Bryant Burns of Ozark, who was named the Arvest Community Excellence Award recipient, presented by President/CEO of Arvest Bank for Fort Smith and the River Valley Region. Burns was chosen for his countless hours of community service throughout the River Valley, plus his 4.0 GPA and his standout performances in both football and baseball.

The Shoppers Value Comeback Kid, presented by Chuck Combs, president of Shoppers Value Food, went to Hannah Ladd of Ozark. Ladd overcame two ACL injuries to make it back to help the Hillbillies during her senior season. Melissa Vitale of True Grit Running presented Jalen Cloud of Stigler the True Grit Award for his work in overcoming a birth disability to be extremely competitive on the basketball court for the Stigler team. The top team of the year went to the Charleston Lady Tigers basketball squad. The top male athlete of the year was Greenwood’s Connor Noland who excelled in both baseball and football. The top female athlete of the year was Southside’s soccer star Kelly Carson.

wo championship games. Two bigtime performances. Two MVPS. Two championships. That’s how to leave a legacy, Connor Noland style.

Noland guided Greenwood to the Class 6A state championship in football in December and turned around and did the same in baseball in May. “That was my goal when I came here,” Noland said. “I wanted to get one in both sports. For the season, Noland was a perfect 10-0 on the mound with a save. In 66-2/3 innings, he allowed 21 hits, four earned runs, walked 14 and struck out 123. He also hit .424 at the plate. “This is just a stepping stone for him,” Holloway said. “You see the heart that he has, the warrior that he has. He’s a great kid. He works super hard.” Noland signed during the early signing period while his family was on a vacation at the Roman Colosseum in December to play football for the Arkansas Razorbacks. He will also walk-on and play baseball for the Razorbacks. Ironically, both championships were at venues where the Razorbacks play. “He has a big road ahead of him even with college whether it be in football and baseball, professional football or professional baseball, whatever he goes on to in the future,” Holloway said. “This is just a stepping stone for him. He has bigger games ahead of him.”

The Southside senior had recently graduated from high school, disconnected herself from athletics as she knew it. Carson decided before last Christmas that she wouldn’t pursue athletics in college. The stress, the relentless practice time wasn’t worth it.

Carson didn’t have it bad on the basketball court, either. Despite being 5-foot-5, Carson established herself as a relentless scorer — especially from the 3-point line.

“I know that I’m going to miss it, probably soccer more than basketball,” Carson said. “But i’m going to college to be a student. I want to play intramurals; I’ve seen how hard it is to be a student athlete.

She also learned how to lose with dignity.

It was Aug. 25, 2016. School had started. Ladd was running down the court. “We were running and my leg gave out on me,” she said. “I couldn’t put pressure on my leg and I’m back to the doctor. He told me I had torn my ACL again, along with my meniscus this time.” Done? Finished? Not Hannah Ladd. “I told my self I’m not going to let it stop me,” she said. “I got back on the court; I went to therapy every day. To get to be on the court my senior year was the most amazing thing. Everybody being me made me feel so much better.” Ladd hit the ground as a freshman, helping lead Ozark on a magical state tournament run. Then came the injuries. “Hannah hurt her knee in the sixth game of her sophomore year,” Nagel said. “Obviously, our team was devastated, because she was a big part of that team.” For Ladd, the moment is frozen in time.

—WHY SHE WON— It was an impressive debut season for Northside girls tennis player Kate Files. As a freshman, she won her initial match. She didn’t stop there, though, as Files kept on winning throughout the season. That included going perfect through the regular season, making her the Best of Preps Girls Tennis Athlete of the Year. Files was just getting started. She went on to capture the 7A-Central championship, and her run continued at the 7A State Tournament. Files made it all the way to the title match, but was defeated in straight sets by Fayetteville’s Mary Houston, 6-0, 6-0. 0[ ^HZ Z[PSS X\P[L H ZLHZVU MVY -PSLZ ^OV ÄUPZOLK ^P[O H YLJVYK :OL THKL P[ [V [OL ÄUHSZ HM[LY H ^PU HNHPUZ[ 9VNLYZ» ,YPJH 1HNNLTH\[O PU [OL ZLTPÄUHSZ HM[LY WVZ[PUN H Z[YHPNO[ ZL[ ^PU PU OLY X\HY[LYÄUHS TH[JO

—WHY SHE WON— Sydnie Gamble has crisscrossed the continental United States playing golf. She’s played golf in North Carolina and California. But her biggest challenge to date took place in the fall at the state tournament. “I really kind of learned what I was capable of, especially at the state tournament,” she said. “We had all prepared, and we sort of took it in stride. (But) I showed that I was capable of playing good golf, even if I wasn’t feeling a hundred percent.” Gamble’s dominating 12-stroke victory for individual medalist helped the Lady Bulldogs win the 6A state championship. She is one of many First Tee of Fort Smith golf success stories. The drive to be the best taught her self discipline. “The daily grind of practicing and the daunting school work can be tough, but when you hit that one shot, and it feels good, that’s when you feel like you can do anything,” Gamble said. “It keeps you going.”
