ach year, the Times Record staff is amazed at the outpouring of public feedback when we ask for nominations, and then votes, for the best businesses in the River Valley area. This year was no different. We saw participation from more than 15,000 people who cast more than 500,000 votes in one or more of the 140+ possible categories.
E
This very special publication represents the culmination of this participation, which started back in June with open nominations. After several weeks of write-ins from the public, we compiled the highest number of nominations to get the top five businesses for each category. These were then voted on by the general public in July and August to create the top-three businesses readers will see in this publication. To say the least, folks here are passionate about good places to eat and drink, great places to shop, who’s doing their hair and nails, where to find great service on vehicles, and who they trust to take care of their bank accounts, homes and much more. These winners aren’t always the biggest or the oldest. Sometimes, you’ll see a savvy up-and-comer who’s doing everything they can to get the word out about what they do. Other times, you’ll see a winner and nod your head, because everyone knows they rock at what they do. But even in this great diversity of business types and sizes, we typically see some commonalities. To be in the top three, typically you’ll see: great customer service, a passion for what they do and a commitment to their word. It’s those qualities we see, that make the staff at the Times Record proud to be part of this growing celebration. We thank local businesses throughout the region for their hard work and for making this region a better place to live, play and work. We’re pretty sure we echo the sentiments of thousands throughout our region. They already said as much with their vote.

The winners here were also recognized at a red carpet gala Thursday, Sept. 14 at the Fort Smith Convention Center. Photos from the event will be available soon at www.swtimes.com/ gallery. Finally, we invite you to do a little exploring. If some of these businesses are new to you, see what all the fuss is about with a little visit. Give them a pat on the back for the Best of the Best honor while you support local businesses, which we think are a big part of what makes the River Valley region so special. —Crystal Costa, Publisher | ccosta@swtimes.com

Miss Anna’s on Towson, 5001 Towson Ave. in Fort Smith, was voted the best place to get dessert in the River Valley, in no small part due to the longevity and commitment of staff (right), according to owner Ted Cserna. [BRIAN D. SANDERFORD/TIMES RECORD]
DESSERT >> Miss Anna’s on Towson
Restaurant Offers A ‘Home Away From Home’ Experience he secret to serving up the perfect comfort food is making sure your customers feel comfortable.Ted Cserna, the owner of Miss Anna’s on Towson, wholeheartedly agrees with this philosophy.
T
“We believe our customers appreciate seeing the same smiling faces when they walk through the door,” Cserna said. Many of Miss Anna’s staff have worked there for years and Cserna maintains that consistency makes a huge difference in producing tasty food and a good atmosphere. Miss Anna’s is well-known for their consistency, being open seven days a week, throughout the year, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Local
residents
agree
that
the
restaurant is one of the best around. According to this year’s Best of the Best readers’ choice competition, Miss Anna’s has the Best Dessert in the River Valley area and is in the Top 3 for Best Country Cooking, a category with a lot of competition in the South. The staff at Miss Anna’s are excited to earn the Best of the Best honor. “Since we took over from the Goodsons, we have seen success that we hadn’t even dreamed of,” Cserna said. Miss Anna’s on Towson was previously Goodson’s on Towson. After the Goodsons retired after 30 years in business, Cserna proudly took up the torch. He changed the name to “Miss Anna’s” to honor his mother who was the original baker for him when he started in the restaurant business and the lady behind the cakes and pies that they’ve become
known for. Residents voted Miss Anna’s as the best place to get desserts, and there’s a little something for everyone’s taste. They offer an array of sweets, including creamy layered cakes, fudge brownies, cookies and cheesecakes. But what customers really can’t get enough of are the vast selection of delectable pies. “We affectionately joke that you should never underestimate the power of pie,” Cserna said. The public will be delighted to know that Miss Anna’s offers Free Pie Tuesday. Every Tuesday, customers have the option of including one of Miss Anna’s famous slices of pies to go with their meal, free of charge. Customers may choose between over a dozen different pie recipes, including coconut cream pie, chocolate pie, fresh apple pie, and the ever-popular cherry pie;
all made in Miss Anna’s bakery daily and served up in huge portions. Miss Anna’s offers a variety of options for breakfast, lunch and dinner — from hamburgers to blackened chicken fettuccini. “You can take anyone to Miss Anna’s and they’ll be able to find something they like,” Cserna said. Fans of great country cooking will enjoy the Kickin’ Chicken and the Prime Rib Friday Night Special, served from 5 p.m. to closing. Cserna said that since they opened their doors six years ago they’ve continued to thrive due to the continued loyalty of their customers, and that the rarity of the amount of appreciation they receive is not lost on them. “It really drives us to be the absolute best we can be,” Cserna said.

BBQ >> Rivertowne BBQ
Same Delicious Food, Down-Home Feel with New Ownership iver Valley residents will be glad to know that a local favorite that has fallen under new management still offers the same traditional recipes and awardwinning BBQ.
R
Rivertowne BBQ has been a staple of the Ozark, Arkansas community for almost 20 years. The restaurant is located in the town square and offers guests a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere. Rivertowne BBQ was originally opened 17 years ago by Kevin and Pam Doyle. Their restaurant became an instant success due to a combination of friendly service and delicious food options that could only be found in the deep South. For
instance,
Rivertowne
BBQ’s
infamous “Possum Dumplins”, which are pork meatballs served with coon fat dressing, are very popular among the local crowd. Likewise, their crispy fried green tomatoes, savory link sausages, and jumbo ribs are also long-time favorites. Locals are happy to see that these time-honored recipes and more have been carried over with the new change of ownership. The Doyles ran their restaurant for 14 years before retiring and handing the reins over to long-time Ozark resident, Ben McCall. McCall said that on his very first visit to Rivertowne BBQ he instantly fell in love with the quaint restaurant. “I loved the good food and the atmosphere, so when Kevin and Pam
retired I bought it,” McCall said. McCall shared that he and his staff were very excited and proud to be voted as one of the Top 3 places to eat BBQ in the River Valley. He added that many people were worried about the change in ownership, and that it’s nice to be able to put those fears to rest. “Rivertowne BBQ is still the same as it’s always been: same recipes, same big portions and same down-home feel,” McCall said. When we asked if he was planning to make any big changes to Rivertowne BBQ in the future, McCall laughed. “Well, right now I’m looking into getting our specially-made BBQ sauce bottled, but I’m sure plenty of people will
be excited about that change,” McCall said. Of course, Rivertowne BBQ is best known for their selection of delicious BBQ. Their pulled pork, brisket and ribs are slow smoked for 12 hours and covered in a special rub that remains a Rivertowne BBQ in-house secret. Their award-winning BBQ continues to be featured in a variety of magazines and publications. “It really all comes down to quality service and a little TLC in the kitchen,” McCall said. McCall has been running Rivertowne BBQ for the last three years. Rivertowne BBQ offers a catering service for parties and other special events.

BEST ALL AROUND RESTAURANT >> Bricktown Brewery
Bricktown Brewery on Garrison Ave has been named the best all-around restaurant in the 2017 Best of the Best poll. Right, the staff at Bricktown help make the customer dining experience unique and fun. [JAMIE MITCHELL/TIMES RECORD]
Unique menu, large plates, local craft beer make winning combination
ricktown Brewery offers residents a unique experience at the downtown Fort Smith location, which was recently voted Best of the Best in multiple categories by readers of the Times Record. Customers of the popular restaurant will find an array of dining options, often with an interesting twist. Ever try cheddar curds? How about some sea salt caramel fries? There is plenty to choose from, not a boring meal to be had, and all can be paired with your pick of award-winning craft beers.
B
“By focusing on food that surprises
people with the portion, quality and flavor, as well as, a wide range of local beer either made by Bricktown or Arkansas breweries, we have created a pretty unique place,” said Bricktown Brewery president Buck Warfield. Bricktown Brewery, which was dubbed the Best All-Around Restaurant in the River Valley, delivers on the ultimate trifecta of all great brewhouses: bacon, burgers, and beer. Their menu is loaded with flavor, featuring the legendary Truckburger made with a 50/50 blend of black angus beef and bacon. Along with their core group of six award-winning beers, Bricktown regularly creates batches
2017 BEST OF THE BEST | 17
of seasonal flavors. These handcrafted brews, paired with dishes made with local ingredients, ensure residents a singularly unique experience. “Ask anyone who has had one of our burgers or wood fired pizzas with a Bricktown Bluesberry Ale,” Warfield suggested. Bricktown, which was a Top-3 Finalist in Best Fries, Best Burger and Best Bar, made history by being the first legitimate brewery to set up shop in Oklahoma. Bricktown soon expanded and now has locations across Arkansas and Kansas. They also have two locations in Texas called Bricktown Taphouse & Kitchen, a different name behind the same great
flavors. Warfield maintains that it’s important to be involved in the local community. All members of the management team are Fort Smith area residents, which Warfield believes to be very important. In fact, through their general manager, Kristy Cox, Bricktown was able to raise money for the local fire department pipe band, participate in downtown events, and sponsor the Fort Smith Riverfront Blues Festival. “We will continue to be involved across the community,” Warfield said. Bricktown Brewery resides at the very heart of historic downtown Fort Smith.
It is located at Adelaide Hall, which was built along Garrison Avenue in 1871 and has long since served as a community gathering place for Fort Smith residents. Instead of opting to make major changes to the historic building, Bricktown’s management chose to work with the “tremendous character” of the 100+ year-old building to create a warm and inviting space. Adelaide Hall has been described as the hidden gem of the Bricktown Brewery. The restaurant is located at street level and the lavish banquet area occupies the top floor. In keeping with tradition, management routinely rents out the upper floor for
community events and parties, also offers catering services. “Our Fort Smith team works hard to make sure our guests get the best food, beer and service that we can give,” Warfield said. He added that while the fully stocked bar and large TV’s make the venue an ideal place to watch sporting events, it doesn’t necessarily have the trappings of a sports bar. “We created a beautiful outdoor beer garden and added live music on the weekends,” Warfield said. “There is nothing quite like our place in downtown Fort Smith.”
Thank Èou! FOR VOTING US BEST BANK 2 YEARS IN A ROW!

CASINO >> Choctaw Casino & Resort — Pocola
Luxury Casino and Resort Still Seeing Growth local casino and resort offers an escape from the normal routine with an exciting combination of gaming, fun and live entertainment. Choctaw Casino & Resort – Pocola was recently named Best Casino in the Times Record’s Best of the Best readers’ choice competition. They were also voted one of the best Live Music Venues in the River Valley area, after hosting big names such as Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, Uncle Kracker, Lee Ann Womack, Casey Donahew, and Vanilla Ice.

The staff at Choctaw Casino & Resort – Pocola are grateful to be recognized by the people of Fort Smith and surrounding areas. “Our team works hard to deliver exceptional guest experiences and we are constantly working to improve services so we exceed expectations,” said marketing
director Leslie Lumley. As the property has grown and expanded, so has their team. Choctaw Casino & Resort – Pocola has approximately 700 associates who work on the property. Originally opened in 1994 as a Smoke Shop and Bingo Hall, Choctaw Casino has undergone three expansions, which added the hotel tower, restaurants, and shops, ultimately transforming it into the Choctaw Casino & Resort that guests enjoy today. The last renovations were completed in May 2013, but that doesn’t mean the Choctaw Casino & Resort – Pocola has stopped finding ways to grow and stay on top of the game. “So many major brands are developing their own slot machines now and we work hard to introduce them to the public before anyone else,” said Lumley. Choctaw Casino & Resort – Pocola
will soon feature the new Tim McGraw machines, as well as a new Pac Man themed game. The casino floor has a range of gaming options, such as the latest slot machines and live table games, featuring No Limit Texas Hold’em, Three Card Poker, Cajun Stud and Roulette. Choctaw Casino frequently hosts card tournaments, such as their Charity Blackjack Tournament this summer, which raised money for the Fort Smith Mercy Hospital’s NICU. Choctaw Casino & Resort also provides an area for horse racing enthusiasts, with big-screen TV’s and a large video wall for watching all the major horse racing events in the U.S. This section provides wagering carrels and self-service terminals that allow guests to place bets in real-time. Choctaw Casino is designed for fun and entertainment. Fans of live music will enjoy their entertainment and dining venues, such as the Oak Tree Lounge or
Gilley’s Western Nightclub. Choctaw Casino’s CenterStage Event Center continues to draw in many big names in the music industry. In addition to the live entertainment and gaming, Choctaw Casino has several restaurants, a coffee shop/café and a gift shop. Choctaw Casino & Resort – Pocola also offers guests a lovely hotel in which to relax and count their winnings. Guests may choose between 118 fully furnished rooms, featuring refrigerators, microwaves, desks and a separate seating area. Choctaw Resort offers King Rooms, with an impressive king-size bed, and Double Queen Rooms that are perfect for small families and groups looking for a weekend getaway. Enjoy free cable programming on a flat-screen TV, connect with the complimentary wireless internet, or simply soak in the large shower/tub combo in the room’s private bathroom.

PAWN SHOP >> Cooper’s Coin & Pawn
Cooper’s Coin & Pawn Shop at 7100 Highway 271 S in Fort Smith. [SUBMITTED PHOTO]
local pawn shop seems to have a little something for everyone. Cooper’s Coin & Pawn was recently named Best Pawn Shop in the Times Record’s Best of the Best reader’s choice competition. The staff of Cooper’s are “very appreciative and humbled” by this honor, said general manager Macy Bracken.
A
Pawn Shop Boasts Largest Inventory in Fort Smith Area
Cooper’s in-house gun shop displays an extensive collection of new and pre-owned firearms, from rifles to rare collectibles. They buy, sell, and trade all forms of precious metals such as gold, silver, or platinum. Knowledgeable employees are trained in appraisal and pay a fair amount for items of value.
Established in 1974, Cooper’s was previously located in a small strip mall and dealt primarily with numismatic coins and rare currency. However, the pawn shop now has its own building and is staffed by 10 employees.
The business also includes a 10,000-square-foot warehouse that is across the street from the main building, full of boats, cars, motorcycles, 4-wheelers and more. For more than 40 years, Cooper’s Coin & Pawn has steadily been expanding their stock.
After six expansions, Cooper’s Coin and Pawn has grown from a 1,000- squarefoot shop into a 15,000-square-foot shop that includes a full gun shop and offers complete jewelry services, Bracken said.
“Cooper’s Coin and Pawn has acquired a dozen plus pawnshops with the philosophy of consolidating them into one location and running it well,” Bracken said.
Cooper’s has also bought out jewelry stores, a clock shop, an archery shop, and various music and movie stores have vastly contributed to their collection. With one of the largest inventories of used items in the Fort Smith area, they offer something for everyone; from guns, gold, and jewelry to electronics, instruments, movies/games, and other related merchandise. “Our showroom is stocked full of deals and bargains galore,” Bracken said.
“Fairness and honesty to the customer has kept this business growing, and will continue to do so for many years to come,” Bracken said. Cooper’s also regularly gives back to the local community and sponsors multiple youth sports teams through Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club. Cooper’s reassures customers that they understand that times can get tough and that they’re fully prepared to help the people of their community out in a pinch.

Owner Gives Advice on Avoiding Roofing Scams ansen Roofing and Construction has been named the Best Home Contractor/Remodeling and the Best Roofing Company in the River Valley by readers of Times Record in this year’s Best of the Best competition. Hansen Roofing and Construction also made the Top 3 for Best Siding & Windows.
H
Owner Scott Hansen told Times Record that he built his company on the premise of treating people right. “To be named among the top businesses in the area after eight or nine years really says a lot about our character and how we do business, I think,” Hansen said. Hansen Roofing and Construction offers a team of Master Shingle ApplicatorsTM
who handle roofing services involving installation, repair and replacement. According to Hansen, they are exclusive to Fort Smith in their lifetime labor warranties on roofing systems. “If something goes wrong 15 or 20 years down the road, we’ll be there to fix it,” Hansen said. Hansen employees are proven roofers, but that’s not all. The Hansen team also handles general contractor services and has experience in complete remodeling. Hansen Roofing and Construction offers a variety of services dealing with concrete, drywall, gutters, siding, fencing, windows and flooring. Over the years in the roofing and construction business, Hansen has gained knowledgeable insights into the industry.
He told Times Record that homeowners should be on the lookout for “storm chasers.” He warned that sometimes there are Individuals who come from out of state and offer roofing bargains before installing or repairing roofs. “After a hailstorm, everybody and their brother becomes a roofer,” Hansen said. The majority of roof leaks are caused by improper installation methods. Hansen advises homeowners to skip the expensive repair bill and call in the professionals. He stated that the best way to spot a scam is to check up on their place of business. If it’s out of state or if their address isn’t verified, then homeowners should use that as a red flag that they’re trying to make it harder for their customers to contact them
when something goes wrong. “Get the guys who go by the book and do it how it’s supposed to be done the first time,” Hansen said. Hansen Roofing has recently started a campaign called “Roof’s For Brantley.” Brantley is the 18-month-old son of Scott Hansen’s cousin, who has been diagnosed with cancer and is starting chemotherapy. Hansen Roofing will be donating 3% of all sales to Brantley’s family from now until December 31st. People may also donate at Bank of the Ozarks Account# 2100606744. Hansen stated that this money will aid with the unexpected expenses Brantley’s family now faces. If you are unable to donate, Hansen and Brantley’s family ask that you please spread the word: #BRANTLEYSBATTLE.

They were recently voted Best of the Best in the Times Record’s annual readers’ choice competition for No. 1 in Auto Service & Repair. They also made the top-three in the New Auto Dealer and Collision/Body Shop categories. When asked what advice Harry Robinson could give to local residents he said that car owners shouldn’t neglect maintenance. “Don’t wait ‘til your vehicle quits on you. It’ll run a long time if you just keep up on the maintenance,” Robinson said.
Harry Robinson Buick GMC offers many automotive services, from routine maintenance to major repairs. They’re also a full-service GM Certified parts dealer, and the only medium duty general motors parts dealer from Little Rock to Tulsa. Robinson said that their dealership consists of a great group of employees. Their service employees are GM certified and ASE master technicians, while the people in their 20 vehicle bay body shop are master techs, I-CAR certified, PPG certified painters. Harry Robinson Buick GMC is a family operation, first and foremost. Robinson’s three daughters have worked in the dealership on and off since high school. Robinson’s eldest, Renee Durham, is
currently the general manager. Harry Robinson started his car dealership in June of 1984 after encouragement from his then-boss Richard “Dick” Durham, who owned a Pontiac, Cadillac, GM, Toyota dealership. Durham helped Robinson get his start in the business, and that level of individual care is something Robinson carried over into his own company, as well as in his personal life. “We’re a family business, we like to treat everyone like they’re family, and we take care of our own,” he said. Robinson reminisced about one local physician whose job at Harry Robinson Buick GMC is what put him through medical school. He added that the Fort

A prominent Southern businessman, Zig Ziglar, once said, “You will get all you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want.” Robinson supports the idea that doing everything you can to help your neighbor will help you and everyone else in the long run. He serves as a Community Services Clearinghouse Trustee and was recently selected as 2017’s Rotarian of the Year by the University Rotary Club of Fort Smith. Harry Robinson Buick GMC is a proud

Robinson would like to thank the people of Fort Smith and the surrounding areas for supporting them with their business all these years. He also added that the success Harry Robinson Buick GMC has seen just drives them to reinvest in the community. “We love the River Valley…we love living here, raising our families here, we go to work here every day, and we need to help the community grow.”

AUTO SERVICE & REPAIR — INDEPENDENT
>> Jody’s Auto Center
Success Seen Through the Generations in Local Independent Auto Shop local automotive repair shop offers invaluable expertise honed over two generations. In doing so, Jody’s Auto Service Center was recently voted by readers of the Times Record as the area’s top pick for Best Towing Services and Best Auto Service & Repair in the Independent category. Jody’s Auto Service Center has three locations across Fort Smith and Van Buren.
A
“It says a lot about how our customers feel about us and there is no better gratification,” President Joseph Rupe said.
services, exhaust system repair, electronic systems maintenance, glass repair and replacements and roadside assistance, just to name a few. They also provide towing services, expert trailer repair and free pick-up and delivery. Joseph’s father, Jody Rupe, opened their first shop more than 30 years ago with a loan on the family farm. Ever since the torch was passed on to Joseph, he has made sure to stay true to what his father taught him, both in the shop and in doing business.
Jody’s Auto Service Centers offer a team of experienced technicians who do full automotive repair and maintenance on diesel and gasoline vehicles.
“My father believed hard work, great service, and a focus on simply ‘doing what’s right’ would make this company successful,” Joseph said.
All centers are staffed with certified diesel technicians and ASE certified techs. ASE, National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, trains and certifies mechanical professionals in the United States. ASE technicians must re-certify every five years and keep up-to-date on the latest automotive technology.
What started as a three bay muffler shop has grown into a very successful auto company which services more than 11,000 vehicles annually in Fort Smith, Van Buren, and surrounding areas. According to their core values, Jody’s Auto keeps the best interests of their customers in mind.

continue to move forward, grow, and strive to give our customers the best experience our area has to offer,” Joseph said.
whether it’s transmission repair or even a detail job, we’ll get it handled for them,” Joseph said.
Yet, a 30-year-long reputation for quality repair and wide variety of services aren’t the only things that set this auto shop apart. Jody’s Auto tries to stand out by offering their customers a solution to all their automotive needs.
Jody’s Auto strives to be the River Valley’s one-stop shop for residential customers and fleets, Joseph added.
“If a customer needs one of the few things that we don’t perform in-house then we’ll get it handled for them;
“We have the best technicians, use the best parts, and back it up by offering the best warranty,” Rupe added.
Their service centers continue to receive top ratings for customer satisfaction on major service review websites.

management. Their facility is a judgmentfree zone and all matters having to do with their clientele are handled privately, according to Newton. The staff has found that once weekly meetings with personal weight loss coaches keeps their clients motivated to succeed. The Metabolic Research Center also offers hormone testing to help plan around hormone imbalances that might make weight loss difficult. DNA collection can be done in-house, with a simple cheek swab. In just a few days, Metabolic Research Center can have an entire weight loss program based off DNA results. Employees stand behind the “Research” in Metabolic Research Center. Newton said. Another feature of the program that might interest River Valley residents is the “Weight Loss Fort Smith” menu plans that include options for dining out. Fort Smith has a thriving food scene and it would be a shame for participants of the program to have to cut out visiting local eateries entirely, Newton said. “You can eat in most restaurants and stay on program.”

Their “Weight Loss Fort Smith” menu plans instruct clients on just what to get at the local grocery store or order in a restaurant to fuel their metabolism and encourage weight loss.
Foods and recipes that offer lean proteins, healthy carbs and good fats are included in the menu plans. Their biggest selling point is the fact that there are no pre-packaged meals or counting calories in the program. Just food combinations that have been scientifically proven to work. The staff at Metabolic Research Center help their clients lose weight, but more importantly they make sure they have the tools needed to keep the weight off. Newton said that the staff of Metabolic are with their clients from their first step through the door, and through every last step of their maintenance journey.

REAL ESTATE AGENT >> Aaron O’Neal/O’Neal Real Estate
Bringing Creativity to Local Real Estate Industry n real estate, you’re not just selling a house, you’re selling a neighborhood. The staff at O’Neal Real Estate understand that distinction well. In fact, their intimate knowledge of the local community is why O’Neal Real Estate has rapidly become one of the best realty agencies in the River Valley area.
I
O’Neal Real Estate was recently chosen among Times Record’s Best of the Best in Real Estate by local residents. “We consider it a great honor to be considered one of the area’s best real estate companies,” owner Aaron O’Neal said, who was named as the top real estate agent in the River Valley for 2017. It was an unlikely turn of events that put O’Neal Real Estate on the path to
success. O’Neal and his wife, Lauren, originally went into real estate as a way to supplement their income on teachers’ salaries. “I never could have imagined owning my own company,” O’Neal said. Yet, after over a decade of experience in the real estate industry, Aaron and Lauren decided to start their own company. O’Neal Real Estate was established just over two years ago and has now grown to employ dozens of O’Neal realty agents at multiple locations across western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. The husband and wife team decided to do things a bit differently in order to cater to individual clients’ needs. “We pride ourselves on being a marketing firm that specializes in real estate,” O’Neal said.
With creative marketing plans and a varied pool of networking connections, the realty agents offer access to more widespread exposure for their client’s property listings.
extensive experience with buying and selling homes in the area. One of their highly recognized agents, Justina Johnson, was recently elected the Vice President of the Fort Smith Board of Realtors.
O’Neal Real Estate ensures that properties are marketed on a national level with listings that regularly appear on major national real estate websites.
“We really have the most talented group of people I’ve ever worked with,” O’Neal said.
“We offer the best local knowledge base to our clients,” O’Neal said.
O’Neal Real Estate supports locally owned businesses and often strives to offer a helping hand to the community; whether they’re contracting local carpet cleaners, ordering local print marketing materials, or even using fresh locallyroasted coffee in their gift bags.
The agency’s swift popularity is often attributed to the local expertise of their agents. O’Neal Real Estate professionals are long-time local residents who have

When Thomas started his State Farm insurance agency in April of 1980, he set out to ensure they would be “the best insurance agency that a person could ask for.” “I knew that everyone needs insurance and I knew that State Farm is the one of the largest insurers of cars and homes in the United States,” Thomas said. Brad Thomas Insurance Agency Inc. regularly sponsors youth basketball camps for Southside, Northside and Van Buren high schools. Thomas and his associates offer their services to individuals across the River Valley, including Fort Smith, Van Buren, Greenwood and Alma. Thomas said that his associates are very professional and incredibly loyal to
their policyholders. Linda Newman, the office manager, has been by his side from the very start. Carol Shepard has also been with State Farm for 37 years. Johnnie Campbell offers 30 years of experience in the insurance business. The staff at Robertson, Beasley, Shipley & Robinson celebrate more than 120 years in Fort Smith with recognition as one of the top three law firms in the River Valley as part of the 2017 Best of the Best readers’ poll. [JAMIE MITCHELL/TIMES RECORD]
ATTORNEY >> Robertson, Beasley, Shipley & Robinson
Practice Celebrates Over 120 Years in Fort Smith Fort Smith law firm dating back to 1893 is still among locals top choices for legal representation. Robertson, Beasley, Shipley & Robinson Law Firm was just named one of the Top 3 Attorney Services in the River Valley by readers of the Times Record in this year’s Best of the Best competition.
A
“We are extremely excited to be nominated by our clients and peer attorneys as one of the top law firms in Fort Smith,” Attorney Christopher Brockett said. Robertson, Beasley, Shipley & Robinson, PLLC has quite a lengthy history and service record as one of Arkansas’ oldest law firms. Their origins can be traced back to Thomas B. Pryor, a local lawyer, who formed the firm Miles, Pryor & Miles in Fort Smith. The firm underwent
many changes throughout the years, as named partners came and went, with the notable mention of Vincent Miles who withdrew from the firm in 1933 after he was appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as one of the three initial board members of the newly established Social Security Administration. In 2000, Thomas B. Pryor III merged the then Pryor, Barry, Smith & Karber, PLC law firm with the Bethell, Callaway, Robertson and Beasley law firm to form Pryor, Robertson, Beasley, Smith & Karber, PLLC. “In 2006 after practicing with the firm as a member for over 50 years, Thomas B. Pryor III retired from the active practice of law, maintaining the position of counsel with the firm that his grandfather started,” Brockett said. In 2012 new additions caused the name Pryor to be removed for the first
time in 119 years. Benjamin Shipley joined in 2014 and Jon Robinson was admitted in January of 2017, to form Robertson, Beasley, Shipley & Robinson. “Collectively our eight current attorneys have over 253 years of legal experience, so there are very few legal matters that we do not have experience handling,” Brockett said. Robertson, Beasley, Shipley & Robinson law firm offers many services related to different areas of law, which affords their clients a well-rounded pool of resources under one roof. They provide a wide range of legal services including, but not limited to the areas of taxation, estate, probate and trust administration, business and commercial services, insurance defense, employment law, personal injury, tractor trailer and products liability claims, along with all forms of related litigation.
Each partner at Robertson, Beasley, Shipley & Robinson has their own specialization. John Beasley specializes in insurance defense, Benjamin Shipley deals with employment law and Jon Robinson handles personal injury claims that include tractor trailer and product liability claims. Thomas Robertson maintains the position of counsel with the firm and advises on bankruptcy law, commercial and business law, real estate and probate law, and civil litigation. “The firm of Robertson, Beasley, Shipley & Robinson is a well-established and proud law firm,” Brockett said. They pride themselves in providing the best legal services available to the community. Everyone at Robertson, Beasley, Shipley & Robinson loves Fort Smith and they look forward to continue to seeing it prosper, Brockett said.

Candice Settle (from left) Carrie Jernigan and Lauren Clark of Settle & Jernigan, PLLC, which is a small, boutique law firm located at 2501 Fayetteville Road in Van Buren.
ATTORNEY >> Settle & Jernigan Law Firm
Local Boutique Law Firm Focuses on the Individual ettle & Jernigan Law Firm was recently selected as the River Valley’s top choice for Attorney Services in the Times Record’s annual Best of the Best reader’s choice competition. Candice Settle, Carrie Jernigan and Lauren Clark make up the gifted legal team of Settle & Jernigan, PLLC.
S
The three locally-raised women regularly take on numerous cases across Crawford and Sebastian counties. Settle & Jernigan Law Firm was established in 2013. From there, these women set out to become the River Valley’s #1 choice for legal representation. Carrie Jernigan told Times Record that they viewed this award as a huge honor. “We work so hard every day for our
clients and it is nice to see that hard work pay off,” Jernigan said. Candice Settle and Carrie Jernigan both graduated from University of Arkansas Law School. Together, they offer more than 21 years of experience in practicing law. Lauren Clark is a firstrate addition to the team and has been practicing law for the last three years. Jernigan said that they all knew they wanted to be attorneys from a young age. “We grew up with a love of community and helping others so this boutique law firm is a great fit,” Jernigan said. Boutique law firms specialize in one or several related areas of the law. They tend to be smaller than general practice firms and their attorneys offer more specialized
experiences. Many people seek out boutique legal services because of their reputation for more personal focus, or even to get great recommendations for reputable law firms that handle something outside of their niche, according to Jernigan. Settle & Jernigan Law Firm doesn’t represent big businesses or insurance companies. Instead the firm specializes in a few different areas, including personal injury cases, such as car accidents, wrongful deaths and inattentive drivers. They also handle all types of domestic and criminal work, along with an extensive amount of employment law cases. They pride themselves on giving clients a level of individual attention that can be difficult to find these days.
“We love the River Valley and the people in it…we work so hard each day to find justice for our clients,” Jernigan said. Settle & Jernigan Law Firm attorneys pledge to fight for their client’s best interest in all things. They work with their clients to get the best possible outcome for their situation. Settle & Jernigan Law Firm provides an environment of respect and compassion for the troubles their clients may be facing. If Settle & Jernigan Law Firm’s current Best of the Best award is any indication, local residents seem to benefit from the personalized services they offer. Jernigan said that the River Valley appreciates local, strong women who fight every day for the little guy.
