Staying safe in the heat

As the temperatures rise, the American Red Cross reminds us that hot cars can be deadly. Remember to never leave your children or pets in a vehicle, as interiors can quickly reach 120 degrees. You should always make it a habit to check your back seat before leaving the car. According to the organization No Heat Stroke, 743 children have died due to pediatric vehicular heatstroke since 1998. These deaths all could have been prevented. Don’t forget these other safety tips to keep you and yours safe during your summer adventures.

Wear sunscreen The sun is a welcome sight for many Americans who face brutal winters and chilly springs. Even though it provides us with many benefits, it is crucial to protect our skin with proper sunscreen. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Importance of water

Staying hydrated is important all year but can be especially crucial during summertime. When your body temperature rises, you need more fluids. The American Heart Association says that keeping the body hydrated helps the heart more easily pump blood through vessels and muscles. It is easy to confuse thirst and dehydration. In fact, the AHA says that if you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. Rather than monitoring those levels, they recommend monitoring the color of your urine – pale and clear means healthy hydration and dark means you need more fluids. While enjoying the summer weather, it is important to replace the sweat you will perspire during outdoor activities.

Watch the mercury

Prolonged exposure to hot temperatures can cause heat exhaustion, heat cramps and even heat stroke. This is caused when your body tries to cool itself by pushing blood to the surface of your skin. As a result, important components like your brain and other organs don’t get the flow they require to operate correctly. Get up close with nature this summer Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center offers camps, activities, more By Mardi Taylor New programs and old favorites highlight the summer planned at the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center. Chad Lowe, education program specialist with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, said the center began its summer with activities in May and will continue a mix of year-round programs and new activities through August. Several new events will focus on going beyond basic hunter education, Lowe said. A tree stand safety demonstration planned for 9 a.m. July 10 is a new program where participants can learn the proper way to hang a tree stand. “We’re trying to get above and beyond just our regular hunter education,” Lowe said. “And so now, actually, we’re going to take them out, show them how to set up tree stands, and use the fall arrest system while they do that, because most of our TIMES RECORD FILE PHOTO hunting accidents are tree stand falls. If we can educate more on that, I think we Emily Williams gets a bird’s-eye view of a can be doing a little bit better service to the mother bluebird from inside a nesting box public.” on display at the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center. The center also plans a new firearm safety

event, set for 2:30 p.m. July 26. Lowe said participants will use mock firearms as learning tools during that program. The center has an “Archery-Palooza” planned June 8 where participants can shoot at a flying disc or swimming fish instead of the usual bullseye. Registration is underway for the center’s youth workshops and kiddy kamps. Lowe said these programs get full pretty fast and said early registration is good. Craft workshops for children 8-12 will be June 12, July 10 and Aug. 8, and Kiddy Kamps for children 4-7 will be June 13, July 11 and Aug. 1. Another new event will be an evening canoe on the Arkansas River Trail, which is set for 6:30 p.m. July 13. “We’re going to get a group of people over there and take them on that trail,” Lowe said. “It’ll be in the evening time, so it should be good.” Another of Lowe’s favorite events is canoe fishing on Torraine Lake, where participants can catch crappie with artificial bait. That event is scheduled for 9 a.m. May 29.

Annual barge tours through the center will begin in July and require registration, which can be done by calling the nature center. Lowe said the tours fill up fast and urges those interested to register as early as possible. Summer is a busy time at the center, and Lowe said volunteers are always needed. Many regular programs will continue to be held, including fishing and animal hour on Thursdays and outdoor shooting and canoeing and kayaking on Fridays. Visitors will be able to use a new boat dock on Wells Lake while visiting the center, as well as a play area for kids. “We try to keep it fresh, keep it going,” Lowe said of the new elements at the center. “We get a lot of people from out of state coming in (during the summer). It seems to be kind of a tourist hub. We stay pretty busy, which is good.” The Huckabee Nature Center is at 8300 Wells Lake Road in Fort Smith. Some events require registration, which can be done by calling the center at 479-452-3993. For more information and a complete list of programs and activities, visit rivervalleynaturecenter.com.

Indoor entertainment

Once the temperatures get too uncomfortable to spend much time outdoors, there are still plenty of things to do inside. Search for an event to attend locally or within driving distance for a family road trip. Entertainment in an air-conditioned building may be just what you need to enjoy the dog days of summer. By Greenshoot Media

Visit an aquarium A great way to scratch the itch of curiosity about nature and the ocean is to visit an aquarium. You’ll get a first-hand glance at what occurs underwater while you stay safe and dry (and cool). For those who don’t feel comfortable scuba diving, this is ultimately the only chance to see wet wildlife up close and personal. Thanks to the unique visual appeal of some of the most beautiful fish and aquatic animals, it’s no surprise the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums says these facilities receive more than 700 million annual visitors. Aquariums are also great places to instill respect of wildlife and responsibility to children.

See a play Witnessing a live-action play is a great way to unwind. If you have never been to a play, you may be surprised at the vast differences between watching a performance and seeing a movie on a screen. In this environment, both the actors and audience are a part of the event. Those on stage will feed off the enthusiasm and enjoyment of their

spectators. Since live performance doesn’t have the luxury of editing out their errors, each play is truly unique and special. Find a venue that is holding a performance that appeals to you, and you may also find your next hobby.

Attend a concert An indoor concert is another awesome event to attend during the summer. Being surrounded by a large group of like-minded people as you sing along to your favorite anthems creates a community experience that is not easily duplicated. Look for listings in a community calendar or at your favorite venues. TIMES RECORD FILE PHOTO

Visit the ocean By Greenshoot Media

The ocean is considered the lifeblood of our planet. It covers more than 70 percent of the surface, encourages weather conditions, regulates temperatures and supports every living thing. Summer vacations have long been associated with oceans and the beach. If you’ve never witnessed the magnitude of this blue wonder in person, this year is a great time to plan a trip. When visiting the ocean, there are certain safety measures to consider and plenty of fun things to experience.

Remember these tips to enhance your chances of finding beautiful shells on your visit to the ocean. Try to look for shells when the tide is either low or going out. Also, tides are much stronger after a full moon or strong storms and tend to bring more shells to the beach. Try to find areas that aren’t packed with other beach-goers. It’s likely that they will have picked through most of the available shells.

Bring your camera Don’t forget to document your vacation. The ocean can create once-in-a-lifetime memories that you will want to revisit when you’re back at home. Bully-proofing kids Martial arts build self esteem but they can walk away from a fight.” White started the martial arts school 10 years ago to create a safe, traditional and affordable environment for boys and girls of all ages to learn Koren martial arts and the underlying culture in a family-style setting.

Joshua White poses with two of his students. White offers Korean Martial Arts training for adults, children and families. At Mu Sool Won of Fort Smith, “bully proofing” kids extends beyond physical training to preparing students in every way. “A lot of parents want to put their kids (in martial arts training) for self-esteem,” said Joshua White, owner and chief instructor of the Fort Smith Martial Arts Center. “Kids learn not only they are worth something,

White comes from a family of martial artists and began his own training at age 5. Now 28, he is a fifth degree black belt and was inducted into the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame July 2011. Students assist with demonstrations, but White teaches each class of usually 1 5 to 20 students. The group size means students receive individualized attention. The focus is on the quality of training, not on the maximum number of student that can be enrolled. Our Beginner Youth Program is designed to introduce our children (ages 6-12) to

martial arts and help build coordination, confidence, respect and teach self defense. The curriculum includes interactive drills to teach martial arts techniques to ensure a strong foundation for future education in our Advanced Youth program as well as having a greater understanding of martial arts. Our Instructor Team also promotes and reinforces strong core values to our students in both group “mat chats” as well as in one on one training sessions. Children come into his classes with selfesteem issues, but by testing for new ranks, learning to break boards and sparring with instructors, they grow in confidence. Sparring also teaches restraint. “I’ll throw a punch and stop it in front of your face or stomach. If I can stop it, I learn restraint.” White said. I’m not training them how to fight, I’m training them to defend themselves. I don’t want them to go to school and start fights.”

Must-haves for fun, safe hiking trips Hiking is an enjoyable activity that continues to attract millions of people. But hikers must take steps to ensure their hiking trips are safe. By Greenshoot Media

Few outdoor activities are more widely enjoyed than hiking. According to Statista, a statistics portal that gathers studies and statistics from more than 18,000 sources, more than 37 million people in the United States went hiking in 2015. That marks an increase of nearly eight million from 2006.

hikers going on short hikes that do not involve heavy packs or technical terrain can wear trail shoes, while hikers should wear hiking books when carrying heavy loads or traversing more technical terrain. Boots offer more support than hiking shoes, making them more suitable than hiking shoes on difficult terrain.

Hiking is a great activity that makes for great exercise and a wonderful way for people of all ages to spend time enjoying the great outdoors. Veteran hiking enthusiasts recognize that hiking, while a fun activity, can quickly become dangerous if they don’t exercise caution and prepare for their hikes. Novice hikers may want to focus on a handful of areas before going on their first hikes.

In addition to wearing footwear appropriate to the terrain they will be traversing, hikers must pack rain gear and extra clothing. The AHS recommends that hikers dress in layers so they can adjust to changes in the weather and their activity levels. Avoid cotton, which keeps moisture close to the ªÓ 1 n n×á AÔ¡oÔÑØ ««¼ Ø þ«íÔ «¡oâ«ü¦ ¼ A\o }«Ô skin, and bring 8@Ó náþ I ,Ó [n× ¼ A¦âØc «Ô A¦ \ ØoofØc ¼A\ A of ØoofØc }oÔâ ĂoÔc «Ô A¦ \ }oÔâ ĂoÔØc Ø« Aff â ûoØc oÔR \ foØc a hat to protect #¥ , @¥á×b /nne ¼oØâ \«¦âÔ« c â«« Øc ØâÔAü A¦f Ø« ¡í\ ¡«Ôo against unforeseen @¥e #á nÓ ÔA¦\ AÔ¡oÔÑØ « $¼ rainstorms and @Óen¥ ¥ /ì»» n× t / ³c ÔA¦\ c / Üê§êt [ ¾ ܧ¿ §Ý êêäÜ insects.

Technology Men and women may be accustomed to pulling out their smartphones or tablets and employing the GPS services on such devices when they need directions. But it’s important that hikers recognize networks may not be accessible in wooded or remote areas. As a result, hikers should not think they can rely exclusively on technology to help them when they get lost. Hikers should carry a map and compass during the hike, making sure they bring an updated map of the trails they will be hiking.

MAY-AUG. 2018

Food and drink Extra food and drink can help hikers whose hikes end up taking longer than they anticipated. Choosing snacks such as protein bars that can fill a person up without making him or her feel sluggish is a good idea. In addition, hikers should pack enough water to keep them hydrated during the hike and longer in cases a person gets lost or wants to stop and enjoy a nice view along the way. The AHS notes that drinking too little water during a hike can make one susceptible to hypothermia and/or altitude sickness.

Tools Hikers should purchase a prepackaged first-aid kit for hikers, which the AHS notes can be found at any outfitter. In addition, a knife or multipurpose tool can help a person perform repairs on broken

or malfunctioning gear. If need be, hikers should bring a backup pair of eyeglasses or, if contact lenses are worn, a lens kit and eyeglasses just in case. Hiking is an enjoyable activity that continues to attract millions of people. But hikers must take steps to ensure their hiking trips are safe. GREENSHOOT MEDIA

Celebrate Independence Day On July 4, 1776, the United States adopted the Declaration of Independence and each year, we celebrate America’s birthday with food, family, fun and fireworks. By Greenshoot Media One favorite summer vacation for many families in the country is traveling to a city for a large fire-work display. While beautiful, the explosives used to celebrate the United States can be dangerous. A professionally staged show gives people the peace of mind that trained experts are there to safely exhibit the glorious colors and patterns in the sky.

Each year, D.C. welcomes numerous performers and an amazing shower of fire-works.

Firework safety If you forgo a trip to a national event and decide to host your own show in your backyard, caution is the word of the day. First, check with local officials about regulations regarding fireworks in your area.
