Nativity image inspires prize-winning wool design

4-H member shows wool can be cool

You may not want to put on wool clothing when it is 100 degrees outside, but one 4-Her is doing what she can to make sure wool is cool.

Amy Crow, 17, is a member of the Achievers 4-H Club in Wichita. Fiber arts is one of the 4-H projects she has been active in during her five years in 4-H. She has helped judge fiber arts at the Kansas State Fair, and saw that there were not very many entries in wool. So she decided to enter in 2022, and that decision paid off. Her wool nativity scene earned a purple ribbon – the top ribbon in 4-H – and she received the Best Wool Award.

“It was my first time working with wool,” Crow said. “It is not a very com mon media to work with. Wool is very expensive.”

She embroidered it us ing hand applique, doing a lot of the work while traveling quite a bit this summer. The travel meant she did not enter as many items as normal, but it did help her finish her wool nativity scene.

She was inspired to create a nativity scene by her mother’s collection of nativity items.

In addition to the expense, wool is harder to work with than cotton, which is the media Crow has worked with most often in fiber arts.

She found her pattern on a visit to Silver Dollar City.

“I was joking that Mom needed another nativity, and she was like, ‘Yeah!’” Crow said.

“There’s lots of memo ries stitched in that proj ect,” said Julie Crow, Amy’s mother.

Amy earned eight pur ple ribbons at this year’s Sedgwick County Fair,

with four in fiber arts, two in clothing construction and two in photography.

Project creates quilts for kids

The mother-daughter team are active in quilts, too. Julie is the county project leader, and Amy serves as the junior leader.

They helped lead an effort that will provide a dozenand-a-half quilts to children in Sedgwick County, all made by youth from 4-H clubs in Sedgwick County. The Crows lead quilting workshops every month.

They got help in two im portant ways. First was a $250 grant from Thrivent, the non-for-profit for merly known as the Aid Association for Lutherans.

Second, they were given access to the GoCreate creative workshops created by Koch Industries and the Fred and Mary Koch Foundation, located on the Wichita State University Innovation Campus.

materials and equipment affordable and accessible for 17 4-Hers. The quilts, some of which were on display at the Fair, will go to children’s homes and hospitals.

While this was the first year for the donation project, the Crows expect it will become an annual effort.

“I think it’s the first time I’ve seen something (at the Fair) done to give away,” Julie Crow said.

They also get help from the locally-owned Faithful Remnants, which provides discounts to 4-Hers to help make their projects affordable.

The number of fiber arts projects entered at this year’s Fair was up, and the project is growing.

Last year, one 4-Her spent $80 to make a quilt that was no bigger than a baby blanket. The help the youth are receiving is making a difference.

“Now it’s feasible for them to learn how to make a quilt,” Julie said.

Amy Crow did well with her quilt entry, earning grand champion.

Sedgwick County 4-H members created 18 quilts that will be donated to children in need. They were on display during the Fair.

Classic ‘Queen’ song brings talent win to Maize teen

A great performance of a hit song by the band Queen helped a Maize teenager win the 2022 Fair’s Got Talent at the Sedgwick County Fair in July.

Jovi Garcia, 16 of Maize, performed “Somebody to Love” by Queen during the Saturday night finals on July 23 in Cheney. She sang “Always Remember Us This Way” by Lady Gaga in the first round. Performing on stage is not new to Garcia. She has performed in a few competitions.

“I competed in pageants since I was little. It wasn’t new for me,” Garcia said.

She competed in the 2019 Fair’s Got Talent and made it to the finals, but did not have the performance she wanted and did not place.

Her choice of that classic Queen hit was brave.

“It was frigging hard,” Garcia said, laughing.

She was not sure what the judges were looking for during Fair’s Got Talent, but thought she had turned in a performance worthy of victory.

Flower

excited about winning. Obviously, I was very nervous.” Her mother and father told her she would win.

“My parents are my biggest supports,” she said.

Garcia started taking singing lessons at around age 6, and joined a chorus in middle school. She is in the show choir at Maize High School, where she will be a junior.

She does not have any specific goals for her singing right now, but does have dreams.

“Definitely, I want to do more with it. I want to see where it gets me,” Garcia said. “When I was young, I used to always sing Ariana Grande. I loved the way she sings and her confidence.”

She likes singing alternative music, but is learning to appreciate other styles of music.

“My voice teacher is more on the musical theater side. I found joy in those songs,” Garcia said.

Dancing is another one of her talents. She is on the flag girls dance team at Maize High. She has been dancing since she was around 3 or 4 years old, and enjoys pom, jazz, hip hop and tap dance.

She has two older siblings, both of whom are adults, and a younger brother who is getting ready to turn 2.

Garcia was named the winner by a three-judge panel on the final night of the Fair. The talent competition’s first-round was July 21, and the final was on July 23.

Eric Caudillo of Hutchinson took second place. Janaé Cape of Cheney was third. Saturday night’s people’s choice winner was Samuel Peters of Cheney. Grace Schuster of Cheney was Thursday’s people’s choice winner.

First-time Fair entries bring success

CHENEY – A first-ever trip to the Sedgwick County Fair was everything that Debra Denham could have asked for.

She settled in Cheney, the home of the Fair, last November. The Arlington, Texas, native loved every moment of the experience. On top of having a great time, she did well with her entries in the open class division.

Denham won Best of Show in the adult division of the floral competition, and took second with her quilt.

“With as many beautiful quilts as there were, I was crying,” she said. “I’m very proud of both entries.”

This was her first time putting together a floral arrangement. Her entry was a collection of wild flowers gathered from ditches.

“Going down the road,

I saw all these things that are pretty. Lots of people call them weeds,” she said.

“Everything in my arrangement was found on the side of the road.”

She called her entry “Wild in the Wind.” She is now searching for cattails.

She wants to use them for arrangements for Christmas presents.

Denham brought experience to her burandy quilt entry.

“I’ve been sewing since I was a baby,” she said.

Denham lived in Wichita previously, and wound her way back to Kansas late last year. She drove a semi for 17 years. Although she is now retired, she still has her truck.

“I made the quilt in the back of my 18-wheeler,” she said.

Her experience at the Fair is just one of the many things she finds wonderful about her new hometown.

“I love it here,” Denham said. “The Fair was a lot of fun. People seemed to be having a great time.”

She said her favorite part was watching youth show their livestock in the various 4-H shows.

“They get out there every morning to water and feed and take care of their animals. They were a joy to watch,” Denham said. She also loved the musical performances.

Barbecue cook-off winners chosen

The barbecue cook-off returned to the Sedgwick County Fair in 2022. Although it was a cookers-only affair, with no samples or people’s choice award, it did revive an event that has found success in the past and drew in a number of teams to compete.

Haysville Aviators grounded at NBC World Series

Our Opinion

Meaning of amendment vote will take time

The defeat of the “Value Them Both” constitutional amendment sent shockwaves throughout Kansas and across the nation. Kansas has been a battleground before – our nickname was “Bloody Kansas” as guerrilla war broke out between pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions leading up to the Civil War, and who can forget the “Summer of Mercy” in 1991 when abortion protestors captured the attention of the nation.

Here’s some numbers from an Election Day that culminated another important battleground stretch in our state’s history.

The fact that “vote no” carried the day – essentially upholding a 2019 Kansas Supreme Court ruling that the state constitution guarantees a right to an abortion – was not a surprise. What was a surprise to both sides is how soundly the proposed constitutional amendment was defeated, 59 to 41 percent.

The victory for “vote no” passed with votes from across Kansas, not just its urban and suburban centers, although many of the votes came from there. Most votes, yes and no, came from the urban areas because that’s where most Kansans live.

One out of five Kansans lives in Johnson County, and nearly one in four lives in Sedgwick County, giving the state’s two biggest counties 38 percent of the state population. The five most populous counties – Johnson, Sedgwick, Shawnee, Wyandotte and Douglas – account for a majority of the population at more that 1.6 million people or about 55 percent of the state.

Voters from mid-sized and small counties also contributed to the outcome. The numbers play this out.

Nineteen counties saw “vote no” carry the day. In the 2016 presidential election, 14 of those counties went for Donald Trump, whose appointments to the United States Supreme Court led to the overturn of Roe vs. Wade, which had guaranteed the right to an abortion for nearly 50 years. Four counties that went for GOP gubernatorial candidate Kris Kobach in 2018 also went for “vote no.”

In Sedgwick County, the vote matched the state numbers: 59 percent voted “no.”

Rural counties like Cowley County,Crawford County, Greenwood County, Jackson County, Osage County, Franklin County and Miami County all voted “no.” Many

of the counties were close – in Greenwood County, there were only two more “no” votes than “yes” votes. The margin was larger in Crawford County, home to Pittsburg, with 55.4 percent voting “no.”

But many counties that voted yes also were close. Sumner County supported “vote yes.” There were 6,983 votes cast on the issue. But “vote yes” won by fewer than 400 votes. “Vote yes” performed better in the more rural areas of the state, but those counties have only a fraction of the voters when compared to the metropolitan parts of the states. Some counties recorded fewer than 1,000 votes, such as Gove County, where “vote yes” garnered 78.1 percent of the vote but there were only a total of 883 votes cast.

This vote was about far more than numbers, however. One lifetime Catholic told us she voted “no.” She does not support abortion, but she does support birth control rights and access. Polls have shown a majority of U.S. Catholics support birth control, even though that is contrary to church teachings. But this voter was worried that Republican legislators would not stop at just banning abortions.

It appears many other voters felt the same way; the “vote no” campaign could not have succeeded without the support of at least some Republican voters.

So, does that mean Kansas has become a little less red?

Was last week’s vote a sign of a statewide shift to the political left, or just a sign that voters and GOP legislators differed on this one issue?

It is hard to say...at least for now. Gov. Laura Kelly won her race four years ago as a number of Republicans crossed party lines. However, the man she defeated, Kris Kobach, won a three-way GOP primary for Attorney General last week.

Kansas’ vote likely hints at how abortion battles in other states may play out. As for Kansas itself, November’s gubernatorial race between Kelly, a Democrat, and current AG and Republican Derek Schmidt, will likely tell us more.

No matter what side you were on in last week’s Constitutional Amendment vote, it was great to see that kind of election involvement. And with last week’s massive voter turnout, we all can hope that Election Day in November might possibly mirror that enthusiasm.

‘Faux Pho’ can be simple fix for a quick meal

I love a good bowl of pho –Asian soup featuring a delicious broth, vegetables, noodles and usually some kind of protein.

Preparing a batch of real pho can be time-consuming, but always rewarding. It’s good...and good for you.

From the Editor’s Files

Asian teriyaki noodle bowls. I tried one as directed, and it was awful. No wonder they were free for the taking.

Sometimes, though, you just don’t have the time for something that could easily take a couple of hours to prepare. Recently, I came up with a solution: Faux pho.

First things first. Let’s get the pronouncations straight. Pho is pronounced “fa” even though it looks like “fo.” Faux, on the other hand – meaning not genuine –actually is pronounced “fo.” Faux pho, therefore, is simply “fo fa.”

Phew.

I created my faux pho awhile back when a relative gave me a whole bunch of quick and easy

But since I always hate wasting food, I started thinking about what I could salvage from these God-awful microwave bowls. In the end, I settled on the bag of noodles, the dehydrated veggies, and the plastic bowl – which looked perfect for storing leftovers.

I almost always have vegetables in the refrigerator, so here’s what I did for my first round of faux pho. I sliced up matchstick carrots from a bag of baby carrots, cabbage, onion and mushrooms. While I steamed those veggies, I made some chicken broth from boiling water and “Better than Bouillon” that I always try to have in the fridge. I softened the package of noodles in the broth, added fish sauce (an absolute

must for Asian broth dishes, and you can get it at most grocery stores), and finally added the steamed veggies and some fresh basil. The whole process – prep time and cooking – took about 20 minutes.

For something that ain’t the real thing, my faux pho is pretty darned good. Mine is usually just vegetable pho, but you can easily add sliced roast beef, or even frozen meatballs. The meatballs can just be cooked for a couple of minutes in the microwave, and are fantastic in the soup – just like real pho.

When serving, I like my pho with some kind of hot sauce. I usually have some leftover sauce from my favorite carryout Vietnamese restaurant in Wichita.

And my rule of thumb is this: the veggies are whatever is in the fridge. Just try it and see how it tastes – spinach, for example, is a good substitute for fresh basil.

And if you have to spend time shopping, you’ve just defeated the purpose of this quick and easy meal.

It is “faux pho” after all.

Furry pants take a real commitment

The greats in any field become great because they are committed to their craft.

Random Thoughts

Jackie Stiles, who is featured in this week’s paper after bringing her new basketball camp to Haysville and Conway Springs, was known for shooting 1,000 jump shots per day. She became the leading scorer in Kansas high school basketball history, and set a college scoring record.

That’s commitment.

But then there is the commitment of Jason Shire, the lead singer for the popular local band, Big Fat Fun, which played on Saturday at the Sumner County Fair.

As good as the band is, including Shire’s vocals, he’s also

known for his wild outfits, heavy on the glittery appearance. His attire often includes furry pants. That was the case Saturday in Caldwell, with the setting sun beating down on the stage and temperatures still well into the 90s.

Furry pants in August in Kansas. That’s commitment. Or somebody who should be committed.

I’m feeling a bit overheated just writing about it. Shire must spend a good deal of money on Gold Bond.

Anybody who has been to a Big Fat Fun show knows how good the music is, and how high the energy levels are. There is very

little “dead air” in a BFF show, meaning almost no quiet time or chatter between songs. The result is the band plays a lot more songs in any given hour than most bands.

It was a treat to get to see Big Fat Fun, because nearly all of the band’s 2022 schedule has been private or corporate events.

They have played other events in our area. Last year, they played at the Party in the 060 in Haysville and at the SummerBall Showdown in Goddard. They have previously played the Sedgwick County Fair.

It was a good time, and Big Fat Fun plays pretty much any genre so you know there will be something you like.

And furry pants. I can only imagine what they are like at the end of a show. Here’s hoping the pants have their own ride home after a gig.

Make their tummies ‘rum’ble with tropical cake

Spice Up Your Life

We were able to spend a fantastic evening with some great folks this past week for a celebration of Christmas in July.

We hosted the meal last year, so it was our friends’, Adam and Samantha’s, turn to do it this year. They decided to celebrate the theme of the night by creating an entire menu of Cuban food.

As will be no surprise, I volunteered to make des sert, and after lots of online research, I decided to try a light, fruity cake—with a bit of rum included for good measure.

This recipe comes from the company site for Imperial Sugar and was written by Chef Eddy Van Damme, who has the nickname of the “Prince of Pastry.” You can find the original post at https://www.imperialsugar.com/reci pes/cuban-rum-cake. I adjusted some of the ingredients a bit in my version.

This was absolutely delicious and received rave reviews from the group. There wasn’t much left of the cake, despite all of us overindulging beforehand on an amazing meal. It

Directions

Cake Ingredients

1 cup butter, softened

1 1/2 cups sugar

8 egg yolks

3/4 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 tablespoon vanilla

3/4 cup buttermilk (or milk with a touch of vinegar)

2 cups cake flour

1 cup sweetened coconut

Rum Sauce Ingredients

1/4 cup butter

1/8 cup orange juice

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 cup light or dark rum (I used dark)

1 teaspoon vanilla

Filling Ingredients

2 cups heavy whipping cream

2 teaspoons vanilla

2 tablespoons, plus 2 teaspoons sugar

8 ounces pineapple, sliced or in chunks in juice

had great tropical flavor, and even if the rum part scares you a bit, I’d say go for it. It definitely did not feature a “boozy” taste. Instead, the rum amplified the orange and pineapple flavors.

There are few things better than sharing a good meal with a good group, and this weekend was no exception. As summer is starting to wind down, it was a wonderful way to wrap up a busy July.

Spice Up Your Life is a weekly recipe column by Lindsey Young, who describes herself as an enthusiastic amateur cook and can be reached through her website at spiceupkitchen.net.

Cuban rum cake is a light, flavorful dessert with fresh whipped cream, toasted coconut, pineapple, and of course, a homemade rum sauce that is brushed over the entire cake.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Prepare two eight- or nine-inch round cake pans by buttering and flouring them. Set them aside. In a mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy. Beat in the egg yolks, one at a time, for about 30 seconds each.

Beat in the salt, baking powder and vanilla. Beat in the buttermilk and cake flour, alternating between them.

Split the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Let the cakes cool for at least 10 minutes before removing them from the pans by inverting them onto plates and setting them aside to cool completely.

Turn the oven off, but spread the coconut on a baking sheet lined with waxed paper and place it in the oven for about five minutes or until the coconut is lightly browned. Set it aside. For the rum sauce, combine the butter, orange juice, sugar, rum and vanilla in a sauce pan, and bring the mixture to a boil, whisking constantly. Let it boil for two minutes, then remove from heat. Set the mixture aside to cool.

When the cakes are cooled, prepare the filling. Beat the cream, vanilla and sugar on high speed until stiff peaks form. If necessary, prepare the pineapple by cutting it into bite-sized chunks.

To assemble the cake, place the first cake on your serving plate and prick the entire surface with a toothpick.

Brush half of the rum sauce onto the cake, letting it soak in. (This might take a moment.) Spread about one-fourth of the whipped cream onto the cake and top with the pineapple. Place the second cake on top and repeat the process with the rum sauce before coating the entire cake with the rest of the whipped cream. Finish the cake off by sprinkling it with the toasted coconut. Keep the cake refrigerated until you’re ready to serve.

Researching a property, be it an old home, a new business, or a section of pastureland, can do more than tell us the history of a space. It can also build a human connection to the people who came before us and the times in which they lived.

This talk shares creative ways to study documents and assemble relevant narratives from maps, deeds, newspapers, and often unsought or unknown resources.
