Raiders volleyball looks to alumna as coach By Michael Buhler TSnews

The Argonia Raiders volleyball team’s new coach is a familiar face to many in the community. Haili (Rea) Lovelance takes the reins of the Raiders after serving as an assistant coach last season and working as a para in the district the last four years. But before that, she was a key member of the 2012 Argonia squad that finished second at the Class 1A Division II State tournament in 2012. Seven players – and two starters – are back from last season’s 25-5 team. Argonia also has quite a bit of height this season. “I think that our biggest battle will be who is playing front row the most with the height we are blessed to have,” Lovelace

said. “We gained a couple of (newcomers) that have some height, and girls that are driven to play and want to win.” The Raiders opened the season earlier this week at Attica and head to Cedar Vale/Dexter Tuesday. Argonia heads to a tournament at Norwich next Saturday and makes its home debut the following Tuesday (Sept. 14). “Some of the strengths that we have are the height, the willingness to learn and to make ourselves better,” Lovelace said. “I would say our

ROSTER

weakness is that we are a young team and the lack of exposure to a varsity game.”

Depth to be a strength for A&A Titans By Travis Mounts TSnews

The Argonia-Attica Titans hope to put together a season similar to last year, when they went 9-2 and advanced to the 8-Man Division I State quarterfinals. Depth will be one of the Titans’ biggest strengths, with several key players back and good numbers at all grade levels. “What I like to see is we have a handful of seniors, juniors, sophomores, freshman...across the board,” said co-head coach Luke Greenwood. Xander Newberry will

be under center once again. Greenwood said he came a long way last year, leading the team in both passing and rushing. “Hopefully, we’ll look for him to continue to improve and to lead the team,” Greenwood said. Adam Blanchat and Connor Harnden return to the backfield, with Seth Drouhard and Blake Shaddox protecting them and creating holes in the defense. On defense, Blanchat was among the top players in Kansas in tackles. “It’s going to start with Adam. He reads well and gets to the ball quickly,”

Greenwood said. Drouhard also anchors the defensive line, and Greenwood said he had a really good season in 2020. Harnden, along with Cooper Traffas, set the tone in the secondary with their pass defense. They also help a lot in the run game. Look for Dalton Morrison to get more playing time early, in part due to injuries. Wyatt Peterson and Coady Blick, both juniors, are expected to contribute more this season. “We expect to get a lot of quality minutes out of them,” Greenwood said.

For the Titans, the main focus this season is their district game. Goessel and Moundridge may present the biggest challenges. Medicine Lodge should be improved; the Titans did not play them last year, after Medicine Lodge was forced into quarantine. The Titans then added Clifton-Clyde as a last-second replacement, which turned out to be the Titans’ only regular season loss. The Titans did not really play any close games last year. Their nine wins include four major shutouts where they scored 46 points or more, and their

Campus looks to make strides in 2021 By Travis Mounts TSnews news@tsnews.com

The Campus Colts hope to add a few more wins to their record this fall, taking advantage of the skills of several returning players. “We have some kids with experience, but we have some new faces, too,” said Campus head coach Jamie Cruce, now in his third season leading the Colts. On the offensive line, Kyle Butcher will move from guard to center, and has been doing well, Cruce said. Aidan Williams started some last year on the offensive line, too. In the backfield, Braelyn Jay returns at quarterback and Remey Buckles is the starting running back. Hunter Long will be the

Colts’ top tight end. Cruce said the team feels it has three to five good players to play in the slot position, including Garrett Denning and Derek Sheler. Christian Sicard will contribute there, too, and Buckles can catch coming out of the backfield. On defense, Barrett Roads will help anchor the line. Sicard will be a starter on defense, too, although the Colts are trying to limit their number of twoway starters. Senior Jaron Dodson started the Colts’ final game last year and will be a regular starter this season. Long will have a role as defensive end. Denning will have a role in the secondary as both safety and cornerback, and senior Johnny Harris will be a starting cornerback. The rest of the positions

on both offense and defense will be new starters. “We’ve gotten a lot of kids a lot of reps this summer and at fall camp,” Cruce said. The goal is to build depth and limit two-way play. They will need that depth, as this year’s schedule will be just as tough as ever. Derby and Maize are the top teams until somebody says otherwise. Hutchinson could be the team that takes them down, as the Salthawks put together a great campaign in 2020. “We don’t shy away from (our schedule). You either attack it or you don’t,” Cruce said. “We’re excited to play the teams we’re going to play.” The Colts’ early goals are simple. “You want to see execution, don’t make mistakes that hurt you. We can’t

beat ourselves in the first game or two,” Cruce said. It is important for Campus players to show they understand the schematics of the offense and defense. “You want to be crisp and not make mental errors. And then you have to go make plays.” Campus opens the season this Friday at home against Salina Central. The Colts’ lone win in 2020 came in Week 1 against the Mustangs. Next week is a road game at Maize.

Experienced Colts ready for season By Michael Buhler TSnews

The Campus Colts will have plenty of experience when they take the volleyball court this season. Back for the Colts are seniors Reece Likes and Mylana Moore, plus juniors Makenzie O’Bryan and Taryn Kondo. The quartet helped Campus win its pool at the Arkansas City invite last season, where Kondo had 23 kills and five blocks; O’Bryan had 14 kills and seven blocks, and Likes had 54 assists in three matches. Colts mix experience, new faces on golf course By Michael Buhler TSnews

The Campus Colts girls golf team will have some solid experience to build around when they are on

the course this season. Four players return, including State qualifier Kiley Maier, plus Alicia Jaramillo, Sara Vulgamore and Christina Rau. Also back is senior Analysia

Morales, who was injured last year and couldn’t play. She played in some varsity tournaments her sophomore year. “I look for all the girls to improve from last year,”

Campus coach Josh Curtiss said. “They all showed up in the summer to work on their golf games. They compete each week to see who goes to the varsity meets the next week.”

Also factoring in are a pair of golfers from Clearwater. “Clearwater is co-oping with us for golf this year like they have been for soccer the past few years,” Curtiss said. “There are a couple of girls from Clearwater that I see playing in varsity tournaments. They are Lauren Potter and Alexis Elliott. There are also two other girls from Clearwater playing, Kaylee Stoker and Kaelyn Potter.” The Colts opened the season earlier this week at Derby and host a tournament at Pine Bay Golf Course Tuesday. Curtiss said his team’s experience is a positive. “Most of the girls have

played multiple years of golf,” Curtiss said. “It also helps that we got a couple girls from Clearwater that have played golf competitively. But a weakness will be experience as well. Those that aren’t returners, are new to the sport.”

Sevart to lead slate of returning runners

By Travis Mounts TSnews

Three-time State qualifier Paul Sevart will aim for a fourth trip during the 2021 Campus Colts’ cross country season. “He’s a very unassuming leader of our team. He leads by example,” said Campus head coach Cooper Clark. Sevart placed 49th out of more than 100 runners at the 2020 Class 6A State cross country meet. He also ran the 3200 meters at the 6A State track meet in May. Also helping lead the team will be fellow seniors Jeremiah Whitson and Peyton Letterman. Whitson is a two-sport athlete

ROSTER

who also is part of the Colts’ soccer team. Clark said Letterman looks poised to make a big jump this season in his performance. Sophomore Nathan Mortenson is out for his first year of cross country but had a good showing in track last spring. Brody Bloom, a freshman, brings lots of potential to Campus. “Brody is one of the fastest kids to come out of our middle schools,” Clark said. Clark added that the Colts’ boys team has as good a chance to qualify the entire squad for State as it has had in some time. “We have a lot of guys who run for each other.

We have a mix of experience and youth,” he said. Maddie Carpenter, the girls’ top runner, is fighting an injury right now and it is not known when she might return. Clark said she was on pace to qualify for State cross country last year, but missed out due to quarantine rules. She ran in the 1600 and 3200 meters at State track last May. “Right now she’s focused

on a role as a cheerleader” for the team, Clark said. Anna Corbett, another of the team’s three seniors, missed State by one place at last year’s regional race. She has stepped up this season. Nicole Farmer is the Colts’ final senior. Campus will rely on that trio, as the rest of the team is young, with little varsity experience. Others are running for the first time. Clark is happy to see the

roster size growing for the girls. He has his fingers crossed for a more normal schedule this year. Last year, for example, they ran three straight weeks at Derby. Top meets this year include the JK Gold Classic hosted by Wichita State in Augusta on the course that will host State. That meet will be this Saturday. The Colts also plan to at Rim Rock in Lawrence.

That meet was called off last year.

Colts soccer to field many new players By Sam Jack TSnews

Campus Colts boys soccer coach Casey Reece expects some “growing pains” as his team starts the season. “Varsity experience-wise, we have four returning starters, and then there’s not a lot of varsity-level experience,” Reece said. “So we’re going to be figuring some things out, because we have so many new players, or players in different positions. A couple of our returners could be playing different spots as well, out of necessity. We’ve been working all summer, trying guys in different places in our summer scrimmages.” Thanks to that hard work, Reece feels the Colts

have an opportunity to enjoy a lot of success this year. “It’s just going to take some time to find that chemistry with this group,” he said. Returning senior starters Larry Canup and Connor Walcher attend Clearwater High School and play for the Colts thanks to a co-op agreement. That pair, along with returning junior starter Isaiah Ste-

Speed and a quick pace of play will be key goals for the Colts this season. “We’ve got a lot of speed on our team, which has been indicative of

our teams in past years,” Reece said. “There’ll be some things that’ll be very similar to what we’ve seen in the past: Trying to keep a high pace of play up, and sub when we can. Cardinals reload for another deep playoff run By Travis Mounts TSnews

In 2020, the Cheney Cardinals tied the best record in school history, going 9-1 and winning a playoff game. They were a perfect 8-0 in the regular season. Many key players from that campaign are back as the Cardinals reload with the hopes of making another deep run in the Class 3A playoffs. Harrison Voth is back as the Cardinals’ starting quarterback. Peyton Hays and Cameron Summerer will anchor the line and lead the protection for Voth. Luke Grace returns as a top receiver, and he’ll also play a key role in the secondary at cornerback.

Good Luck Cards!

Quincy Thomas will have a dual role as running back and safety, and the Cardinals will count on Ryland Doshier as a tight end and defensive end. “I’ve been very pleased,” Cheney head coach Shelby Wehrman said about the early practices. He said the seniors have gotten bigger and strong, and he specifically mentioned Zane McGuffy and Peyton Becker as examples. Brandon White is expected to be another contributor. He was hurt last year but will be a defensive starter in 2021. Dayton Higgs should be another contributor as a slot receiver. Wehrman was cautiously optimistic about the Cardinals’ upcoming season.

Good luck, area teams!

“I like the prospects. It always depends on the competition,” he said. There should be several good tests as the Cardinals go into the second year of their new district, facing primarily western Kansas teams. Week 3 will bring a non-district home game against Central Plains League foe the Garden Plain Owls. The Cardinals topped the Owls last year, but Garden Plain put together a great season. Most of Cheney’s regular-season wins were by double digits, although they had a classic contest in a 31-28 road win at Holcomb. Cheney will host this year’s rematch. “Holcomb is tough, and Garden Plain is never an easy match,” Wehrman said.

The second year in the new district should be different. “It gives you familiarity. Once you’ve played a team, you feel you know where to attack and defend. But it goes both ways,” Wehrman said. Holcomb could turn into a new rivalry. “That will be a game to look forward to.” The Cardinals’ seniors are doing an excellent job so far, Wehrman said. He said that Voth and

Cardinals look to defend substate title By Michael Buhler TSnews

“We have a lot of experience this year and a lot of talent,” Cheney coach Sara Walkup said. “But we can’t stay in our comfort zone. We need to try and expand what we can do on the court, because with this group of girls, the sky is the limit.” Cheney has six seniors this season, including starting setter Brooklyn Wewe and Korri Lies, a defensive specialist/libero

who played a lot last year. Wewe led the Cardinals in aces last season with 46, while Lies was third with 30 Also back is Olivia Albers, who has been the Cardinals’ starting outside hitter the last two seasons. She led the Cardinals in kills last season with 205 and was third in blocks with 44. Also back is Anna Martin, who Walkup said will continue to be a big hitter for Cheney. Walkup also is high on senior

Lacy Luehrs and junior Campbell Hague as “great” middle hitters for the squad. Jailyn Adolph and Korri Lies will battle it out in the back row as liberos and defensive specialists. Walkup also had words of praise for newcomer Alex Bittner, who the coach said “looks to be a great addition opposite our setter in the lineup.” The Cardinals kicked off the season earlier this week at Eisenhower against the hosts and

Arkansas City and will host Nickerson and Wichita Independent before heading to Hillsboro

Tuesday. Cheney heads to the Haven invite on Sept.

Cheney golfers have experience but are lacking in depth By Michael Buhler TSnews The Cheney Cardinals girls golf team returns some key experience from a squad that finished fifth at the Class 3-2-1A State tournament last season – but also is dealing with low numbers in Randy Leroux’s return as head coach. Seniors Hayley Sutter and Nicole Krueger are back from last fall, as are juniors Kaitlyn Fowler and Peyton Ryba. Joining them are newcomers Brynn McCormick (senior) and Amelia Meng (freshman). And that’s it. “We have only six out

for golf,” Leroux said. “Position placement should be wide open.” All of this results in an ironic mix for the squad. “Four returnees is a strength,” Leroux said. “But a lack of varsity experience and a lack of members are weaknesses.” The Cardinals opened the season in a tournament at Hutchinson earlier this week and head to Medicine Lodge Tuesday.

Cardinals’ Hudson aims for third State XC berth By Travis Mounts TSnews

The Cheney cross country team heads into the new season with a large junior girls’ class. In fact, this year’s team is heavy on girls, a change from a year ago when the Cardinals had a large class of senior boys. Out of 17 girls and boys on the squad, 13 are either juniors or sophomores. There are four freshmen, and the Cardinals are without a senior in 2021. Abbye Hudson is expected to be Cheney’s top runner. She is a two-time State qualifier. Hudson was sixth at the Class 3A State meet in 2020. “She’s hoping to keep that streak going,” said head coach Rich Simmons. The varsity includes twins Tatum and Kinslee Ingram and Lakin Green, all sophomores. That foursome helped the girls to a Central Plains League champion-

Colton Strotman, a freshman, is the most experienced of the boys. He took up cross country while in seventh grade. Sophomore Michel Castorena is new to sport and so a bit of an unknown quantity, but Simmons said he has shown promise. Simmons said Trinity Academy will likely lead the Central Plains League. It is difficult to guess about the rest of the league, although Kingman has a couple of girls who have shown they can run well with Hudson. The meet at Hesston is a highlight on the Cardinals’ schedule. It normally draws 40 to 45 schools, making it the biggest meet of the season. Athletes run only against other runners in their own grades. The

New coach aims to carry on Clearwater’s recent success By Travis Mounts TSnews

The past few years have seen the Clearwater Indians sustain football success at a level that has not been matched at other times in its history. Now it is the responsibility of new head coach Jimmy McDowell to carry on that success. He comes to Clearwater after serving as the offensive coordinator of the Eisenhower Tigers. Before that, he coached at Campus under Greg Slade. He also was the offensive coordinator at Wichita South. He’s happy with how things have gone so far, especially since he was hired relatively late – in mid-June, rather than in April or May when most new coaches are hired on. “It’s been going pretty well. It’s trial by fire,” he said. This year will be a bit

Proudley supporting 3 generations of athletes

different. The Indians are without dual-threat quarterback Tanner Cash for the first time in three seasons. But the cupboard is not bare and former head coach Jeremy Schuefler built a strong program. “He left the program in pretty good shape. There are some pretty good pieces here, skill guys and key offensive linemen,” said McDowell. The defense looks good, too. Linemen Nicholas Warren and Brett Gibbs will lead the way, and the Indians return nearly their entire secondary. The secondary returners are Aidan Brockman and Trent Hastings at safety, and Cole Keesling at cornerback. Tate Martin was not a starter last year but he will be this year. Tyler Fugarino will lead the offense as the Indians’ new quarterback. “He won that job during the summer. Now he’s

stepped into a leadership role,” McDowell said. Fugarino will lean on Warren as his top tight end, and Warren could play some halfback, too. Keesling will catch passes out of the slot position, and Martin and Hasting bring experience as wide receivers. The Indians’ scheme will be a bit different, but not drastically so. McDowell coached with Scheuffler for a season at Campus, so things are similar. There are different twists, too. Fugarino does not run the same way that Cash did – not many quarterbacks do – so look for him to spend more time in the pocket. “Tyler throws it very well,” McDowell said. Instead, the Indians will use more run-pass options and a more traditional passing game. Andale continues to be the standard in the Ark

“We’re in scramble mode right now,” McDowell said at the end of last week about trying to find a new opponent. Unless another team goes into quarantine and leaves its opponent without a game, the odds are low for the Indians to find an available team. Even if a team is available, it needs to be a

team of a similar size. McDowell wants to see the Indians establish an identity early. He has his own philosophy, but will mold it to best fit the Indians’ skills. On defense, the goal is to fill the open spots, especially in the linebacker corps where the Indians are least experienced.

Indians look to size this volleyball season By Michael Buhler TSnews

The Clearwater Indians volleyball team returns a good helping of size from last season’s squad that won a Class 4A substate title and made it to the state’s round of eight. “We should be big on the block again this year, with returning seniors Brooke Berlin and Laurel Streit, who led us in total blocks last season,” Clearwater coach Adrienne Noland. “Also returning are seniors

Tess Winter at outside/ right-side hitter, Hayley Gerberding at defensive specialist and libero, who are both expected to be impact players as well.” Sophomore Elizabeth Tjaden saw some time on the varsity roster last season and is expected to round out Clearwater’s defense at the defensive specialist position this year, while Noland expects a battle for the middle blocker and right-side hitter positions. “I’m excited to see what’s

in store there,” Noland said. Clearwater opened the season earlier this week at Wellington against the host school and Mulvane, and heads to El Dorado Tuesday to take on Andale and the hosts. The Indians host Circle and Wellington in their home opener Sept. 14. “Our seniors have shown tremendous growth in both their skill sets and leadership this summer,” Noland said. “I’m so proud of the standards and goals they’ve set for this young

team and I can’t wait to see where their drive to succeed takes us.”

Trotter heads up returning Indians’ runners

By Travis Mounts TSnews

A trio of experienced runners will pace the Clearwater girls cross country team in 2021. Leading the way, of course, is Haley Trotter. A year ago, she came in third at the 4A State cross country meet. In the spring, she won the 4A State track title in the 800 meters and took third in the 1600. Now she’s back with her sights set on a cross country title. Last year’s winner, Taylor Briggs of Chapman, beat the field by more than a minute but

has graduated, as did the fourth-place finisher. That leaves Trotter, a junior, likely battling Eudora sophomore Sydney Owens, who was second, and Baldwin junior Riley Smith, who came in fifth. Also helping lead the Indians will be senior Ava Hanes and junior Camryn Clevenger. Hanes has lots of experience and was an individual qualifier for State in 2019. Clevenger was part of the 2020 varsity squad. Seniors Colton Ohlde and Mason Seiter will be counted on to lead the boys’ team. Both were part of the 2019 Indians team

that placed sixth at State. “They’ve run a lot of varsity races the last couple of years,” said Clearwater head coach Jeff Cornwell. One key newcomer will be Aiden Wright. “He ran a lot of junior varsity last year and should be in the mix for varsity,” Cornwell said. Owen Wells, another sophomore, ran some varsity late last season and should contribute in 2021. Overall, the Indians’ roster has seen some turnover this year, losing 16 boys and girls from 2020 to graduation. There is excitement about

the upcoming season, which begins this Thursday as Clearwater hosts its annual participation meet. Next week, the Indians’ top runners will compete at Wamego, which also is the site for the State meet

Cardinals ready to defend district football title By Travis Mounts TSnews

In their first year as a Class 1A football program, the Conway Springs Cardinals made themselves very comfortable in a new class. They swept the district schedule, going 6-0 and earning a first-round bye in the playoffs. A model of consistency with their stout defense and single-wing offense, the Cardinals won eight consecutive games, including a home playoff game last year. And they were a single 2-point conversion away from starting the season 9-0, losing their season opener 14-13 at Garden Plain when they opted to try for 2 points and a win rather than kicking for

a tie. Conway Spring will have a chance to avenge that loss at home this Friday when they host the Owls. The Cardinals begin this season with five returning starters on defense and six starters on offense. The challenge will be that virtually all their statistical leaders on offense graduated. However, they will have an experienced offensive line to lead the way. That’s a change from 2020, when the backfield was set and the offensive line was new. “The line can bring the offense along,” said Conway Springs head coach Matt Biehler. The line includes junior center Zane Zoglmann, and seniors Ethan Perkins and Ian Solomon. Both were first team all-district

players. Lance Pauly and Patrick Friess will be the tight ends. Friess was first team all-league and all-district. Also returning are fullback Logan Warren and wing back Derek Smith. Transfer Lane Kelly is the Cardinals’ new quarterback, although in the single wing you are never sure who the ball will be snapped to. Braden Kunz and Nathan Berntsen are sophomores who did well in junior varsity games last year, and they will split time at tailback. Izic Billups could see time at quarterback, too. On defense, Pauly at linebacker and Smith at defensive back are returning first team all-league players. Warren and Perkins were first team all-district players in 2020.

Conway Springs volleyball starts season with new coach By Michael Buhler TSnews The Conway Springs Cardinals have a new volleyball coach this season. Madison Austin takes the reins at the Sumner County school after coaching club volleyball in Wichita in recent years. A Rose Hill native, Austin originally obtained a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Kansas State University and spent three years in the workforce in Wichita while coaching club volleyball in her free time for three years. “I was having little fulfillment in my desk job and my passion was coaching and working with teenagers, so I made the decision to change my career path to become a business teacher and high school coach,” Austin said. “Conway Springs reached out to me and I knew it was a perfect fit right away. … I am so blessed for the opportunity and look forward to creating excitement in both my

A quartet of returnees – senior outside hitter Kenzie Wenke, senior libero Lauren Mercer, junior setter Melainy Kennard and junior setter and hitter Reghan Ohl – are back this season for Conway Springs. Also in the mix for the Cardinals are senior passer and hitter Emily

Heimerman, sophomore hitter Kaley Perkins and the junior trio of Cheyanne Tull (hitter), Katelyn Koester (hitter) and Kara Zoglmann (passer and hitter). Also, two freshmen – setter Bailey Kennard and hitter Raylee Chitwood – have made a positive impression on the new coach. Austin likes her squad’s chemistry so far. “All the girls are famil-

iar with and encourage each other every day at practice,” Austin said. “We have a strong and consistent block. The team is very aggressive and very competitive. Losing is not an option with them.” One area that the team is striving to improve in is serve-receive. “We work on serve-receive every day at practice,” Austin said. “This is one of the hardest parts of volleyball, and we are

working on making this skill much stronger within all of our teams.” The Cardinals opened the season at Winfield last

State qualifiers return for Cardinals tennis By Sam Jack TSnews

The Conway Springs Cardinals girls tennis team boasts four returning varsity players, including two 2020 State qualifiers: senior Loren May and sophomore Hailee Osner. May has an asterisk to start the season. She tore her ACL during last year’s basketball season and is still working on her recovery. Though she has played singles in the past, she may switch to doubles to limit the pressure on her knee. Junior Adrienne May and senior Allison Lange are the other varsity letterwomen returning to the roster, and Cardinals head coach Chris Bellar

said they are hitting the ball well. “And then, from there, we’ve got a bunch of sophomores that are working hard,” Bellar said. “We’ve got four returners, and then I’ve got five other people competing for spots.” The program’s overall numbers are down a bit. Bellar has usually been able to field full, six-person varsity and JV rosters, but it looks like that won’t happen this season, partially due to injuries. “It’s been so unusual. I’m just hoping to get Loren May back, so our first goal is to have healthy players,” Bellar said. “Then the goal is always to get your teams into State and see what you can do.”

Owls want to prevent the big play

By Travis Mounts TSnews

The Garden Plain Owls will need the help of several newcomers to match their 9-2 record from last year. Five defensive starters and four offensive starters are back for the Owls, who went 7-1 in the 2020 regular season and went 2-1 in the playoffs. The offense will center on three returning linemen: Andrew Bugner, Trevor Schmidt and Will Tice. Reed Adelhardt, a transfer a year ago, proved his worth at running back. The biggest question, of course, will be at quarter-

back. “None of our quarterbacks had ever taken more than a few varsity snaps,” said Garden Plain head coach Danny Adelhardt. After a good summer and camps that tested the Owls, John Stuhlsatz has earned the spot at starting quarterback. “He’s really calm,” Adelhardt said. “He’s confident, a good leader. I just like his demeanor, I really do. He’s a good competitor.” Expect to see some changes in scheme to highlight different players’ skills. “There’s no doubt we’ll run the football, and hopefully be effective throw-

ing,” Adelhardt said. The Owls are looking for a new leader on defense. “Will Tice has done a really good job at linebacker. He’s improved so much on that side of the ball,” Adelhardt said. The Owls also will count on Bugner, Schmidt and Luke Hillman to lead the defense. “They’re not very big but these guys can move. We’ll try to use their athleticism on both sides of the ball,” Adelhardt said. Look for linebackers Elijah Atkins and Daniel Mans also to contribute. Mans stepped in for the Owls during the second half of last season.

Deep Owls return key pieces for volleyball season By Michael Buhler TSnews

The Garden Plain Owls will not be lacking volleyball players as they look to make a return trip to the State quarterfinals this fall. “We have 40 athletes playing volleyball this season, so our strength is competition for spots and pushing each other to get better each day and in every position,” Garden Plain coach Gina Clark said. “I feel confident in the experience and decision making of our setters.” Among those setters are Naomi Dooley and

Ryleigh Stuhlsatz. “Dooley was an opposite for us last year, but has been a setter most of her career,” Clark said. “She’s experienced and stands out as a leader on our team. Stuhlsatz is one of our best blockers and spent last year on jayvee getting prepared for this year. She’s competitive and I like her ability to set, dump, and swing.” Meanwhile, Sophie Smith and Kaylor Wasinger will be Garden Plain’s middle hitters. “Smith has a year of varsity experience and Wasinger is only a sophomore, but has a year of

jayvee experience,” Clark said. “Wasinger had an outstanding off-season and summer and has been impressive in the middle.” Look for Sydney Puetz to play libero this season after what Clark called “a terrific summer.” Meanwhile, Madelyn Rolfs, the Owls’ defensive specialist last season, was injured this summer and will be sidelined this fall, so look for a pair of returnees to fill that role this year. “Reagan Smith and Lanie Nelson have worked their tails off this summer in the gym, weight room, and practice so far this season,” Clark said. “They

both have an excellent work ethic and will see time in the DS position.” Brooke Hammond started last fall at outside hitter, and look for some others to be in the mix, too. “We’re still sorting out our starters for the outside

hitter position, and we have some depth at the position, so that will be helpful over time,” Clark said. “Celia Puetz, Brooke Hammond and Molly Zoglman will see time in that position.” The Owls open the sea-

Defense, running back will be keys to Lions’ success By Travis Mounts TSnews

The aerial show that has been a hallmark of the Goddard Lions football team will give way to the ground game this season. The Lions plan to lead with their defense, however, which played a critical role in their recent run of success. “We have a senior defensive line. These three dudes are the best threeman line since I’ve been at Goddard,” said Lions’ head coach Tommy Beason. “We are as tough up front as we’ve ever been.” Those “dudes” are Brayden Wickliffe, Ruben Ortiz and Kaden Glass. Wickliffe and Ortiz were first-team all-league players as juniors. There are many new faces at linebacker, although Dalton Dunn is getting preseason attention.

“He’s really taken on a leadership role,” Beason said. Dunn also is a senior. Senior Luke Hamilton moves into the quarterback role. He was an all-league safety in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League in 2020 and has played quarterback before, although not since his freshman year. “He’s a super hard worker and a good leader, and a strong player. He’s not big, but he’s very gritty and tough, a gamer,” Beason said. The Lions will be a runfirst team this year, which is a change. Beason said the Lions have a host of players who can carry the ball, but they do not have the same depth as they have had at receiver. Dylan Reese is the leading returning rusher. He had more than 800 yards a season ago and scored nine touchdowns. Bo Bantz is back at re-

ceiver. He led Goddard in receptions in 2020 and was second in yards. He will spend some time at running back, too. Sophomore Micah Johnson is one of several up-and-coming pass catchers. With a strong defense, Goddard hopes to reduce the number of possessions in a game. With multiple running backs, they want to be able to control the clock and the pace of the game. The Lions will have eight seniors on offense, including four seniors on the offensive line. “I like our mentality and how we play, but it’s a change,” Beason said. “We feel confident in what we’re trying to do.” Goddard’s junior varsity and C teams have similar players, so this defense-oriented, runfirst scheme likely will be around for a while. “We will continue to

be the same fly-around defense,” Beason said. Goddard went 7-3 last year, with just two league losses. Both were close and both were in Andover, against the Trojans and against the Central Jaguars. Goddard opened the playoffs with a close win over Eisenhower, and then stumbled against Kapaun-Mt. Carmel. The Lions expect to challenge for the league title. “We’re in the middle of things until we prove we’re not,” Beason said. The season begins this Friday with a home game at Buhler.

Defense to power EHS Tigers volleyball By Michael Buhler TSnews

The cliché says that defense wins championships. If that holds true, it could be good news for the Eisenhower Tigers volleyball team. “Our biggest strength thus far is our defense,” Eisenhower coach Shelby Allee said. “We are incredibly scrappy and have improved greatly in this area.” The Tigers also have some experience back. “Hannah Weber is a four-year varsity member,” Allee said. “She is a 6-rotation outside and very dependable. Isabel Trometer is a solid middle and Addison Verbeck was an outside but has transitioned to the libero spot this year.” Allee said that Eisenhower has “some major competition” for the

remaining middle position and outside, where Peyton Winter is competing as well as Carly Dameron

and Kila Respress. Some new faces this season include setter Ryley Kirk, outside hitter and

defensive specialist Taylor Burkholder and right-side hitter Abby Brisco. There are a few areas

where Allee is hoping the Tigers improve. “Communication and consistency seem to always be our struggles,” Allee said. “I expect that to be a factor this year as well.” The Tigers headed to Hutchinson last weekend for the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Preseason Tournament and hosted Cheney and Arkansas City in a home triangular earlier this week. Tigers to debut new backfield

By Travis Mounts TSnews

When the Eisenhower Tigers open the season at Wichita Heights on Friday night, it will be with a brand new backfield and only a handful of starters. A strong trio returns on the defensive side of the ball. Safety Trey Omli and linebacker Cody Hawks are seniors, and Hawks was an all-league selection last year in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League. “Omli and Hawks, they’re two of our better defenders. They’re our biggest playmakers,” said head coach Darrin Fisher. Rounding out the trio is junior Brody Allender, who will anchor the defensive line. The Tigers

hand more responsibility to senior defensive ends Mason Levin and Cade Schuber, and senior safety Ethan Ellingson. “Being seniors, they’re experienced. They bring leadership. They know the terminology,” Fisher said. “They’re just lacking experience on Friday night.” While the Tigers come into the season light on varsity playing time – they are returning just three defensive starters and five on offense – they should be strong on maturity. “We have a lot of seniors starting, and that brings a lot of experience,” Fisher said. Key offensive players will include receivers Owen Rush and Cade Friend, both of whom

were all-league selections, as well as offensive linemen Mason Pfannenstiel and Thomas Fleischman, and junior tight end Noah Stevens. The revamped backfield starts with quarterback Tyler Horn, a junior. “He’s done really good things in camps,” said Fisher. “He’s got a big arm, which will allow us to do some things.” Caleb Lowery takes on the starting running back role. He’s undersized but runs well. Fisher called him a “blue collar running back.” “He doesn’t wear gloves or eye black. He’s helmet and shoulder pads, and go,” Fisher said. The Tigers expect to be a run-first team, although

that could change as different players step up. Friday’s game at Heights will be an early test, as the Falcons have a pair of top-100 runnings with Division I scholarship offers already. There are not many easy league games on the schedule, so it will be important for the Tigers to settle into their new roles quickly.

Leadership strength for Lions on court

By Michael Buhler TSnews

The Goddard Lions will have some familiar faces

on the volleyball court this season. Six players from last season – senior Cydney Carter, Silja Fahnestock

and Makenna Albin, junior Shianne Moore and sophomore Morgan Foos – are back from last season. “We have some great

leadership this year,” Goddard coach Marianne Mooney said. “Our hitting accuracy and communication have improved greatly since last season so I am looking forward to a successful season.” Mooney expects Fahnestock and either Lauren Broz or Lauren Rehse to start at setter for the Lions, while Foos should be the team’s starting libero. Moore or Aubrey Gifford will start at defensive specialist. Look for Fahnestock and

freshman Emerson Wedel, who Mooney calls a powerful hitter, to be in the mix at outside hitter. Also in that mix will be Khloe Perkins, Aubrey Gifford – who Mooney said will be a great addition to the defense – Moore and/or Broz. Carter and Albin will be the middle hitters. Mooney expects Tory Frye may enter as a middle later in the season, but she has an ankle injury that will be keeping her out of play for a bit Mooney still sees areas in which she wants her

Lions return experience on golf course

By Michael Buhler TSnews

The Goddard Lions girls golf team will return a

solid group of experienced players when it opens the season Tuesday. Three seniors – Aubrie Culver, Kaiden Phillips

and Kalista Rugh – are back, as is junior Ally Hamblin. Junior newcomer Jade Simeona also joins the mix.

“We have a solid five right now that will be battling it out for all of those spots,” Goddard coach Rita Smith said.

While the team’s experience is a positive, Smith still sees room for improvement in some areas. “A weakness for us would be consistency,” Smith said. “We have too many big (scoring) numbers on the holes.” The Lions are at Sierra Hills and Pine Bay golf courses Tuesday and head to Dodge City next Thursday to kick off the season. Tigers target return to State cross country meet

By Travis Mounts TSnews

Last year’s Eisenhower Tigers cross country team sent both its boys and girls squads to the Class 5A State meet. They also swept the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. II team titles. The boys team, despite losings three of its top five runners to graduation, appears poised to go back to State thanks to return-

ing runners and several newcomers. Junior Logan Libel will play a key role in Eisenhower’s success. “His work ethic is amazing, and he’s brought a lot of kids with him. He led us this summer ... and is practically a second coach,” Taylor said. “This year, he looks really good.” Libel was an all-league runner last year and missed the all-regional team by one place.

Max Santillan, one of five seniors, moved his way onto the varsity team late last season. “He’s running really well for us,” Taylor said. Taylor said James Richburg, a junior, has gotten progressively better each season. Other contributors will include senior Cael Sanderson, junior Corbin Smith and sophomore Eli Roberts. Freshman Brady Martens also has looked good and should challenge

for the top seven, and maybe the top five. “We’re the defending league champions. I think we can successfully defend our title if we run well,” said Taylor, adding the boys have run hard so far this season. It will take some work for the girls’ team to repeat last year’s successes. They have little depth, with just nine girls out this season. The heart of the team are the five juniors: Lanie Bur-

khart, Brooklyn Freund, Nina Nelson, Mackenzi Popp and Jorah Reynolds. “I’m not sure who will lead us. Mackenzi might be the most improved. Jorah was hurt last year and is a bit of an unknown,” Taylor said. The rest of the team is comprised of four freshmen. “They’re all potentially very talented. Brook and Ashtyn Koeppen look like they’ll step right in. They’ve been very improved in practice,” Taylor said. “I’m kind of optimistic on what these nine girls will do. The

potential is there.” The Tigers will start the season Saturday at Augusta. This will be their first time on the course, which also will host State in late October. Bishop Carroll is not hosting its season-opening meet at lake Afton.

Goddard Lions tennis’ varsity lineup in flux

Goddard Lions girls tennis coach Chris Le-

Fevre is starting his 2021 season without a clear idea of which players will be populating his six-player varsity roster.

Some players LeFevre was hoping to get back for another season are not with the team. Cori Kilmer’s family moved out

of town, and the coach’s daughter, sophomore Raegan LeFevre, decided not to play. On the other hand, junior Leah Combs is back after sitting out 2020. “She was injured all last year, so we’re glad to have her back,” LeFevre said. Junior Alyssa Rising, who played on the No. 1 doubles team last year, is back too, as are sophomores Emma Johnson and Amelia Young,

EHS Tigers return solid core on links

By Michael Buhler TSnews

The Eisenhower Tigers girls golf team returns a solid group of players from last season’s team, giving head coach Cliff Hartzog a solid foundation to build on. Four golfers – Kayla Jensen, Meredith Russell, Lexi Habbert and Lilly Roy – all return from last year. “They should be our core four,” Hartzog said, “and after that, there will be competition for the other two spots between girls with no varsity experience. “We don’t really have any newcomers with expe-

rience, so it’s basically the same team as last year, minus the seniors that were

here. We have 12 girls with a heavy-in-numbers junior class.”

The Tigers opened the season earlier this week at Derby and head to Ando-

New coach takes over rebuilding effort at GHS By Travis Mounts TSnews

New Goddard cross country coach Blake Andrews will oversee a freshmen-heavy roster this season.

Andrews served as the team’s assistant coach last year, so he knows the returning runners. However, the journey still feels new since so much of the roster is young. There are 11 freshmen, and just seven

runners combined across the other three grades. “We have a pretty big freshmen class that can hopefully start turning things around,” said Andrews. Olivia Brownwell, a

freshman, comes into the season after having set the two-mile record at Goddard Middle School in 2020. “We have high expectations for her as a freshman to keep growing,” Andrews said. Junior John Esparza looks like an early leader for the boys. “He came to the team late and ran really good times,” Andrews said. Sophomore Nathan Harkman is another top runner, and Andrews said that Harkman is building on last year’s results. With a small and young squad, the Lions are focused on individual development rather than team results. The team standings will improve as individual performances improve and the team grows in the coming season. “The goal is for the kids to run better times as the season progresses,”

Andrews said. With the size of the freshman class, Andrews thinks the Lions could be very competitive a couple of seasons from now. Goddard’s home meet at Lake Afton on Sept. 23 is a highlight of the schedule. The Lions were not able to host that meet last season. The course includes a big, downhill start, as well as a downhill finish that comes after a challenging run straight up and then across the Lake Afton dam. “We’re definitely looking forward to that,” Andrews said. Running on the Wedge-

Eisenhower tennis teammates will root for one another By Sam Jack TSnews

Eisenhower High School has a girls tennis team, but Tigers head coach Russell Fluty acknowledges that tennis isn’t really a “team sport” in the same sense as, say, basketball or softball. Individual, or doubles, efforts play out

on separate courts. Still, teammates make a big difference to one another just by cheering from the sidelines and keeping up a good atmosphere. “The most fun I’ve had in the past, whether I was a player or a coach, is when you get those teams where everybody has their

individual jobs, but everybody is rooting for each other,” Fluty said. “That’s the culture that we’re trying to build, and that’s the team part of tennis.” Returning players this year include seniors McKenna Jilka and McKenzie Henry. “They both have varsity experience,” Fluty said.

“They’re probably going to play doubles together most of the season, and probably at that No. 1 doubles spot. It’ll be a good and challenging year for them, but I think they’re ready for the challenge.” Returning junior Rachel Davis was a State qualifier as a freshman, and barely missed the cut in 2020,

when the size of the State field was reduced due to COVID-19. “If it were a normal year, she’d be a two-time State qualifier,” Fluty said. “She’ll probably end up playing singles this year. Her sister, Angela, who she played doubles with, is hurt, and I don’t know if she’ll be able to play this year.” “Angela, on any given day, is our best player, so it definitely hurts to have her out,” Fluty added. A group of six to eight girls will battle for the remaining varsity spots, Fluty said.

“I don’t know how that’s going to shake out. We’re trying some different combinations, plus challenge matches, practices and the results of meets; shake the can and see what happens,” he said.

Tigers soccer already looking to postseason By Sam Jack TSnews

During the 2020 season, the Eisenhower Tigers racked up a 12-4 record before losing in the first round of regional play to the eventual Class 5A runner-up, Maize. COVID-related travel restrictions put Eisenhower in a sort

of “super” regional group, along with several other top 5A contenders. That was frustrating, because in another year, the Tigers might have been hosting – and winning – their own regional as a top seed. Now, the team is focused on making 2021 that other year. “We’ve got the same goal

every year: to make it to State. That’ll never change as long as I’m there,” said Tigers head coach Roger Downing. All but four of Eisenhower’s starters are back for this season. “This’ll be our biggest test, this year, but the kids are confident, and they play together. I’ve got 10

seniors this year, and a lot of them have played a lot of minutes,” Downing said. “I think, like, eight of them have been playing together since they were 5. It’s extremely exciting for them and their families.” Downing said senior defender Andy Sloss and junior midfielder Noah Gonzalez will be players to

watch this season. “Everything we do goes through those two guys, as far as setpieces, pace of play, our possession out of the back -- everything goes through them,” he said. The Tigers won their fourth straight AVCTL Div. 2 title last year, splitting it with the crosstown rival Goddard Lions. The team will be working hard to make that five in a row in 2021. “We’re definitely a possession-oriented team, but we’re aggressive. We work hard, not just on the soccer field but also in the weight room,” Downing

said. “Even when we’re playing bad, we’re going to be a tough team to play.”

Lions hope to build on momentum of league title By Sam Jack TSnews

The 2020 season represented a big upswing for the Goddard Lions boys soccer team. The team finished with a 5-1 record in league play and split the AVCTL Div. 2 league title with the Eisenhower Tigers. “To go from 1-5 in league to turn around, go 5-1 and split the league title, is a huge turnaround for us,” Lions head coach Josh Hansen said in October of last year. “And the best thing about it is, our core group right now is sophomores.” Now that they are juniors, that core group is ready to build on last season’s success. “We’ve got a lot of talent returning, and it’s not just in one position,” Hansen said. “It’s all over the field. That young class that we had as freshmen, they’re now juniors, so we’re starting to expect big things out of them, with the progress we’ve had the last couple of years. “We also have eight seniors, so we’ve got strong leadership this year, out of all of them.” Returners include Gabe Villegas, the team’s leading scorer, and midfielder Dominic Zuniga, who was a team captain as a sophomore last year. “We have Brian Revels

ROSTER

in the middle, who feeds off Dom, and Aidan Haislett in the middle. Those three are very dynamic, and together they are very strong,” Hansen said. In the backfield, Hansen expects strong leadership from senior Addison Nguyen and junior Skyler Hernandez. “We expect big things out of Ryan May, our goalkeeper. He’s a big, tall guy with a huge wingspan, and he just gets better in that goalie position, the last couple of years,” Hansen said. The Lions will not be sneaking up on any of their opponents this season, according to Hansen. “Everyone knows the talent we have right now, and we’re going to be the team everybody wants to beat,” he said.
