A nation responds: Students, adults unite in patriotism By Diana Shaughnessy TSnews
Sedgwick County Commissioner Sarah Lopez is on a mission to help show appreciation for and boost the spirits of local medical workers. “Last year our medical professionals were labeled as heroes. Our community rallied around them to show how much we appreciate everything they do. While that didn’t reduce their workload, it did give them a much needed morale boost.

“It’s when a country wants to get revenge,” said Jacob Everhart, student in Heather Welty’s class, also in Clearwater. It took fifth grader Tailor Forrester in Glynda Shoff ’s Clearwater class to get a good explanation. “Patriotism is when you respect your country and show your respect,” he said.
With the recent tragedy still fresh, many people have responded by flying American flags from porches, in windows and even from automobile antennas. “I haven’t seen this kind of show of patriotism since World War II,” said American Legion

Editor’s note: Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. On that Tuesday, 2,977 people were killed and more than 25,000 injured, and many victims have suffered long-term health consequences. This event happed as the Sept. 13 edition of The Times-Sentinel newspaper was going to press. More localized coverage appeared the following week, on Sept. 20, 2001, including this story, which anchored the front page

“This year they are being treated much differently. The workload has increased and there is less staff to help care for the large influx of patients they are seeing in the current surge,” said Lopez. Lopez created an Amazon wish list of items that will be donated to Ascension Via Christi, Wesley, and the Sedgwick County Health Department. “I reached out to friends who are nurses and asked what they would appreciate most. I also remember when I worked clinical receiving small thank
yous from patients or their families. Snacks, pens and other small things made such a huge difference. It’s the little things in life that mean the most,” said Lopez. She connected with the Haysville and Clearwater schools in her district to get thank you cards created by elementary students. USD 261 superintendent Jeff Hersch asked elementary teachers in Haysville to have their classes make cards. Clearwater Elementary West made cards during art class.

GODDARD – Students in some grades at Goddard Public Schools are now wearing masks following action last Thursday by the USD 265 Board of Education. In a 7-0 vote, the BOE voted to require masks for all students in grade 6 and below. The policy went into effect this week as students returned from the Labor Day holiday. Masks will be required for students, teachers and visitors. The district has seen a sharp increase in positive cases and in quarantine numbers. In just the first two weeks of school, Goddard schools saw 45 positive cases of COVID-19 and 137 closes contacts. The district recorded 62 positive cases and 119 close contracts over roughly six months last school year, from Nov. 30 to May 27, according to information sent to parents by Dane Baxa, the district’s director of community relations. Masks were required last school year, but were optional when this year began. Youth under age 12 cannot yet receive the COVID-19 vaccination, although reports indicate approval from the Food and Drug Administration could come in a matter of weeks. Middle school and high school students have the option to be vaccinated. “At this current rate, the district is likely unable to continue daily testing protocols needed to keep students in school. This would result in students being out of school for at least 11 days every time they are considered

Turtle O’Connor named as parade grand marshal By Travis Mounts TSnews
Moving at a slow and steady pace at the front of this year’s Goddard Fall Festival parade will be Cheryl “Turtle” O’Connor, who was named by the Goddard Fall Festival Committee as the grand marshal. O’Connor is actively involved in the Goddard community, working at a local beauty shop and heading up the Goddard Food Pantry, located at Goddard United Methodist Church where O’Connor is a member. In fact, she started the food pantry not long after she started attending the church. That kind of service runs in her family. “It’s something that’s always been on my heart. My aunt and uncle created one of the first ones years ago in Ohio. The pantry helps feed about 150 people each and every month. It also provides toiletries, condiments and toothpaste. While the pantry does not provide everything a person or family needs, it goes a long way toward helping those who are struggling. “It’s eating or not, feeding your children or not,” she said about the food pantry’s importance.
Being named as grand marshal is an honor that O’Connor did not expect. “I was totally shocked. It wasn’t even on my radar,” she said. Many people who know her may be shocked that her first name is Cheryl. That’s because everybody knows her as Turtle. It is a nickname she loves and cherishes. She picked up the nickname in 1973 at the start of a 49-year career working with deaf people. “That’s what they named me. I was their turtle,” she said. “I was Turtle way longer than I was Cheryl.” O’Connor lives in the Viola area now, but is very active as part of the Goddard community. She grew up around Haysville, although she was born in New Orleans and spent her first five years of life there. “The parish I was born in isn’t there anymore, as of three weeks. That’s thanks to Hurricane Ida,” she said. O’Connor has been a regular attendee at the Goddard Fall Festival, and works in the United Methodist Church booth at the festival each year. She will be at the front of the parade this year. The parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, and runs along Main Street.
