Farm tasks become competitive in Ranch Rodeo By Sam Jack TSnews
After being canceled along with everything else last summer, the Sedgwick County Fair Ranch Rodeo is back for its fourth go-round. The Ranch Rodeo features three team competitions that highlight the tasks ranchers actually complete while working on today’s ranches. “Most of the competitors actually work

on ranches,” said organizer Matthew Haukap. “Their day job is working with cattle. So they come to the rodeo and do the same things they do on the job.” The first of the rodeo’s three competitions is ranch bronc riding, an event that also appears in conventional rodeos. The difference is that Fair competitors will use normal working saddles, not special competition saddles. It’s to simulate when

they’re training a new horse that has never had a saddle on. The horse bucks sometimes. It’s about who can ride better or longer. In the second event, teams will compete to see who can sort individual animals out of a herd of steers the fastest. The final event is another test of cowboys’ ability to handle cattle. There will be a truck with a trailer in the arena, and the four
team members will “turn out” two steers. One steer will be roped, tied down, and marked with chalk, to simulate giving it a shot. The other steer will be roped, loaded into the trailer, and unroped. Time will stop when both tasks have been completed. Fairgoers aged 12 and younger can compete in a calf scramble. Whoever manages to snatch a ribbon off a calf ’s tail will win a prize. Those interested in competing in the rode should contact the stock company, Kraft Rodeo. Contact information can be found at www.kraftrodeo.com. The Ranch Rodeo is Thursday, July 8, at the Fairgrounds Arena, with action starting at 7 p.m. Advanct ticket prices are $7 for adults and $5 for kids ages 4 to 12. Kids ages 3 and under are admitted free. Tickets may be purchased in advance on the Sedgwick County Fair website, www.ourcountyfair.com. Tickets at the gate will be $10 for adults and $8 for kids.

Two-night demo derby adds compact class
In 2019, a bigger, better, more bruising demolition derby debuted at the Sedgwick County Fair, with more prize money and two nights of automotive carnage instead of just one. That upgraded event was well-received by both spectators and the demo-derby community, so the twin bill of activities is back for the 2021 sequel. On Friday, the Figure 8 race will return, followed by a compact class demolition derby. On Saturday, the bolt-and-chain class demolition derby will be held. The action starts at 7 p.m. both evenings. For those who aren’t familiar with these events, a Figure 8 race is just what it sounds like: drivers on a track shaped like the number 8, with potential crashes in the center of the track. Drivers can try to avoid or create collisions, depending on their strategy. The compact-class demolition derby replaces 2019’s weld-class competition. Smaller models like the Ford Escort and Chevy Aveo will battle it out. The Figure 8 race and compact class derby will be paired on Friday. The bolt-and-chain class, featured on Saturday, has “stock cars,” which means they are basically regular street vehicles, but with some added safety features. With a substantial pot of prize money, lots of drivers want in. In 2019, around 60 drivers competed, some traveling from as

4-H shows highlight youths’ skills By Travis Mounts TSnews news@tsnews.com
If you live in the city or a “townie” in one of the area’s suburban or rural communities, you may not know much about life on a farm. Today’s 4-H is much, much more than farm-related projects, but farming remains an integral part of the 4-H experience for many youth. The competitive 4-H shows at the Sedgwick County Fair can give you a glimpse at the work that has gone into these projects over the past year. The shows are free and open to anyone who would like to watch. They include the horse show, beef and dairy cows, meat and dairy goats, swine, and sheep. Judging for rabbits, poultry and hand pets is done as 4-H members enter their animals, rather than in competitive shows like the larger animals. The dog show will take place on Saturday, July 10, at Sedgwick County Extension in Wichita. Judging for 4-H also takes place in a number of other events, including arts and crafts, food, clothing, aerospace and rocketry, woodworking, horticulture and crops, flowers, forestry, geology, electricity, fiber arts, photography, educational display, home environment and shooting sports. Entries in all of those categories go on display after judging. You can see them in the Farm Bureau Building and the Cheney Recreation Building, which sit side-by-side on the north end of the Fairgrounds. The rabbit and poultry barn is in the same area. Following is a list of the shows for the larger animals. All the shows take place at the 4-H pavilion on the southeast corner of the Fairgrounds, with the exception of

Kettle corn vendor to pop in to Sedgwick County Fair By Travis Mounts TSnews news@tsnews.com
It’s taken an extra year, but Pop’s Kettle Corn is ready to debut at the Sedgwick County Fair. Owner Randy Eastman of Salina had planned to be at the 2020 Fair, but had to cancel that appearance and many others as the COVID-19 pandemic led most community events to call off things last year. Eastman has been making kettle corn for quite a while now. “Fifteen years, maybe 20, I don’t know. I haven’t kept track,” he said with an easy laugh. He had friends who used to go to fairs and festivals to sell roasted almonds and pecans, but they were getting older. Eastman bought their kettle corn machine and learned the business. He used to travel to other states like Missouri and Arkansas, but now works about 30 shows per year within Kansas, mostly in the north-central and southeast parts of the state. Eastman has attended the Sedgwick County Fair once or twice before, and knows Cheney. His son, Kevin Eastman, oversees operations at D’Mario’s Pizza
and helps coach the Cheney High School baseball team. “I came down here, I don’t know how many years ago, and helped Don (Albers) with the pizzas. I’ve been to the Fair once or twice,” the elder Eastman said, referring to the D’Mario’s Pizza food booth on the Fairgrounds. Eastman’s visit to the Sedgwick County Fair will be part of a string of 13 straight weekends that he will be traveling to different events. He will be selling kettle corn and cheese corn, as well as pop and water. At larger shows, he can offer a couple of additional flavors, but space and staff limitations will keep him to just two flavors. He also expects to get some sales help from his grandchildren. It’s not just popcorn products that keep Eastman busy. He also is a vendor at flea markets, selling furniture, wrought iron fences and old trunks that he refurbishes. On top of that, he helps an auctioneer with sales. Oh, he also sells his kettle corn at a Tuesday farmer’s market in north-central Kansas. All that work means that Eastman works seven days a week for a stretch of about six to eight months. And that’s just how he likes it. “There’s no stress to it. That’s the best, I think,” he said.
Come see Pop’s Kettle Corn at the Sedgwick County Fair. This Kansas-based business is making its first appearance at the Fair this summer.

Returning food favorites Trinity United Christian Church One of the two original food vendors at the Sedgwick County Fair, TUCC serves up bierocks, sloppy Joes and homemade pie. Use the walk-up window on the north side or dine inside. They also offer a breakfast menu. United Methodist Church The other of the Fair’s two original food booths at the Fair. The Methodists are known for their chicken and noodles, or you can have a taco salad and homemade pie. They also offer breakfast items. D’Mario’s Pizza A favorite in Cheney all year, D’Mario’s is a favorite during the Sedgwick County Fair, as well. Grab a slice as you make your way across the fairgrounds. D&J Pronto Pup You don’t have to wait for the Kansas State Fair for this favorite. Get yours today, and remember – a Pronto Pup is NOT a corn dog! Delano 4-H Club Another longtime favorite at the Fair, this booth features Sno-cones from the 4-H kids who hail from the original west Wichita – the former town called Delano. M&M Concessions It’s just not summer without an ear of corn in your hand from the Ossmans. In addition to roasted corn, enjoy handmade limeades and lemonades. Squat & Gobble Barbeque treats – including turkey legs big enough to feed two – are what you’ll find here. Squat & Gobble has become a fan favorite over the years. Western Sedgwick County Saddle Club WSCA will be serving up eats and drinks, including hamburgers and hot dogs, during Thursday night’s Ranch Rodeo and on Friday and Saturday during the Demolition Derby events. Concession stands are located in the northwest corner of the Fairgrounds Arena. Aussie Cakes Nothing screams “county fair” like a funnel cake topped with any number of toppings, or you can be a traditionalist and just go with powdered sugar. Have an Onion Blossom, or try their Navajo tacos. Kandy’s Koffee You can get a hot cup of java if you like, but there’s so much more available, including fruit smoothies that are perfect on a hot summer day, plus brewed and fruit teas, and hot and cold chai. Wok Hei Noodle House Stir fry fresh vegetables with noodles or rice, topped off with their own finishing sauce. The marinated chicken breast is a specialty. The proved to be a great new addition to the Fair in 2019.
New vendors Ken N Barbie’z Rollin Diner This food truck has been a regular in several area communities. Their regular menu includes burgers, a Philly cheesesteak, fajita fries, and other great entrees and side dishes. You can find them on Facebook. Annual tournament provides entertainment for those at the Fair
Grab a seat on the shady bleachers in the heart of the Sedgwick County Fairgrounds and enjoy some softball! The annual slow-pitch softball tournament returns this year, and there still is time for teams to sign up. Forms for the tournament are available on the Sedgwick County Fair Association website, ourcountyfair.com. For more information, email organizer Megan Miller at meganmiller3@gmail.com or call 316-680-9302. Miller is the new organizer for the softball tournament. The tournament’s entry fee is just $100 per team, and there will be a co-ed division and a men’s wood bat division. The tournament format will depend on the number of teams entered. The first-place team in each division receives a $200 cash prize plus T-shirts, and the second-place team receives T-shirts. Miller said the softball tournament is an important part of the Fair. It brings dozens of extra people to the Fairgrounds. It also provides free entertainment during your visit to the Fair. With the food booths just a few steps away, the bleachers are a great place to take a break and enjoy something to eat and drink while watching the games. The tournament will begin on either Wednesday, July 7, or Thursday, July 8, depending on the number of teams Softball tournament signed up. The ball field at the Sedgwick County Wednesday, July 7 to Fairground is in a beautiful setting, with Saturday, July 10 trees lining the seating areas along the first base and third base sidelines. Its Free to watch position in the middle of the fairgrounds means the field is in close proximity to $100 per team. Sign up online food vendors, the carnival, restrooms, at www.ourcountyfair.com and the live performers at the Open Air Arena.

New Patients Always Welcome
By Sam Jack TSnews
The Sedgwick County Fair Parade is always one of the most well-attended events at the Fair. Over the history of the Fair, the parade has been a kick-off event when the Fair started on Thursday, a highlight of the final day on Saturday, and held somewhere in between the start and finish. A few years ago, fair organizers moved the parade from its longtime position on Thursday to Wednesday evening, and it has been a rousing success as the kick-off event ever since – similar to the Sundown Parade for the Wichita River Festival. “We’re all excited,” said parade organizer Carla Ewy. “I’m anticipating a big crowd, just because everybody’s ready to have a fair again.” Groups, individuals and commercial businesses are all more than welcome to march, ride, or organize floats. Taking part is as easy as showing up in the Cheney High School parking lot between 5 and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 7. To sign up early, or for answers to quesSedgwick County Fair Parade tions, call Ewy at 316-772-1325. Parade participants are reminded that they are Wednesday, July 7 • 6:30 p.m. not to throw candy from vehicles or floats. Free event Instead, those giving out candy are asked to walk alongside their entries. Parade line-up starts at 5 p.m. For spectators, the parade starts at 6:30 at Cheney High School p.m. Wednesday and will proceed south down Main Street.

Start your Saturday with the Run to Cheney By Sam Jack TSnews
The annual Run to Cheney will kick off a full slate of events on the final day of the Sedgwick County Fair, Saturday, July 10. This year’s event will maintain a change that was made in 2019: There won’t be a literal “run to Cheney.” Organizers
decided the 8-mile race from Garden Plain to Cheney was not drawing enough participants. Still on the menu are 5-kilometer and 1-mile races, which consistently draw large numbers of racers. The 5K will start at 8 a.m., while the 1-mile will start at 9. Both races will start and end at Cheney High School.
“We did not have it last year, so it’ll be good to see everybody out again, and be a part of it,” said race organizer, and Cheney High School activities director, Todd Hague. The race fee, $20, will include a T-shirt for each participant, plus awards and medals for winners. Proceeds in excess of expenses will go toward scholarships for

Hometown company returns to the Fair By Travis Mounts TSnews news@tsnews.com Growing up in Cheney, Houston Gile was very familiar with the Sedgwick County Fair. That focus on hometown also is evident in his business, Red Bird Service Co., a heating and cooling company based in Cheney. He opened the business a little more than two years ago, and had a booth at the 2019 Fair. Of course, there was no Fair in 2020. “It’s a small, local company based in Cheney. I don’t really travel that much,” he said. In fact, his service calls are limited to within about a 15-mile radius of his hometown. “The whole point is to give people in the community somebody local who can get there quickly.” The name “Red Bird” is a reflection of the Cheney Cardinals. Gile learned the business from his father and late uncle, working at their company, Dan’s Heating and Cooling. Gile was inspired to start his company by his uncle, who passed away about 1-1/2 years ago. Gile is supporting the Sedgwick County Fair because he knows how much it means to the local community. “The Fair makes Cheney special. It’s something the community looks forward to each and every year. Growing something in the garden, raising a cow in 4-H,
entering the art show – it’s a wonderful thing to add to our town and a fun thing for the entire family,” Gile said. Come see Red Bird Service Co. at the Sedgwick County Fair, or call 316-8338215.

Ken N Barbie’z Rollin Diner to roll into Sedgwick County Fair

By Travis Mounts TSnews news@tsnews.com Ken N Barbie’z Rollin Diner co-owner Kelly Ake said business has been good since the opening of the food truck four years ago. In fact, it’s been so good that the business just bought a larger truck that they will soon start to outfit. The truck offers a big menu, with a lot of entree and side items. “We have a ‘ginormous,’ burger,” said Ake. She said that everything on the menu is fresh and made to order. There are no frozen patties or other items. In addition to the burgers, the menu includes a Philly cheesesteak, fajita fries and other types of fries, a fajita burrito similar to chipotle, sriracha chicken rice, a grilled chicken sandwich, and more. This will be Ken N Barbie’z Rollin Diner’s first trip to the Sedgwick County Fair. They were set to debut in 2020, before the Fair was called off. Ake’s business partner is also her girlfriend of seven years, Barb Taber, who does all the cooking. Ake jokes that her job is to stay out of Taber’s way. “We know our place in the business to make it work,” Ake said. You can learn more about Ken N Barbie’z Rollin Diner on their Facebook page.

Carnival is an integral part of the Fair Good luck, 4H! Welcome back!
The Pride of Texas Carnival is as much a part of the Sedgwick County Fair as is funnel cakes and cotton candy, 4-H kids and their animals, music and the sounds of the demolition derby. The carnival will be up and running all four nights of the Fair, with extended hours until midnight on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Ride bracelets give you the best value at the carnival, and you can save money if you buy them in advance. Those who buy wristbands in advance will pay $20 through July 6. Kids love the petting zoo Cute kids and cute animals always make for a good time. For about 25 years now, the Sedgwick County Fair petting zoo has been operated by Kristin and Ivan Meyer of Garden Plain. They make appearances at other local events, too, but the Fair brings in a lot of people from Wichita and other surrounding communities in one of the largest events to take place locally outside of Wichita. Over the years, the petting zoo has featured miniature horses, miniature donkeys, lambs, baby goats, ducks, chickens, rabbits and a calf. A few years after their first Sedgwick County Fair appearance, the Molly Neeley Trio will return to the Open Air Stage Wednesday, July 7, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The trio plays a wide range of covers, all with a unique spin inspired by the group’s unusual instrumentation: Neeley is the lead singer, accompanied by guitarist Phil Bollig and percussionist Ashley Reichenborn. Instead of a traditional drum set, Reichenborn plays djembe and cajon. “We try to get a little bit of everything in there, so that no matter where we’re doing a gig, somebody will hear something that they like,” Neeley said. Neeley, Bollig and Reichenborn all knew each other when they were students at Wichita State University. “Ashley and I originally got together with a different guitarist, and we’ve been playing as the trio since about 2015,” Neeley said. “Phil is relatively new to the trio.”
Reichenborn and Neeley are both elementary music teachers. “We love teaching our students and our kids to love music,” Neeley said. “The trio is an outlet for us to have that performance part back. We like to experience the music and perform it in our own style.” The trio often plays at bars and restaurants around Wichita, including Mort’s in Old Town. “We keep it mostly to weekends and early evenings during the school year, but in summertime we can kind of stretch out legs and do a bit more,” Neeley said.

Whitnie Means Band features Clearwater grads By Sam Jack TSnews
The Whitnie Means Band will open the musical entertainment at the Open Air Arena on Friday evening, July 9. Means said her band plays a little bit of everything. “There’s definitely an acoustic feel to it, because I play acoustic guitar,” she said. “We do anything from current pop music to classic rock to country. And we do a lot of original music, too. Something for everybody is what we try to play. The original songs kind of have a singer-songwriter vibe.” Means has been a musician since age 8, when she started playing bluegrass. She teamed up with bandmate Jenna Fox while they were both students at Clearwater High School. Fox can play keyboard, guitar, bass and percussion. “She’s kind of like a one-man band,” Means said.
Rounding out the ensemble is bassist Kenny Nordstrom. The trio has been making music together for about seven years. Means attended the Fair during her childhood, so she is excited about playing it for the first time. The Whitnie Means Band has released a six-song EP. Those tracks are available on Spotify, Apple Music, and other streaming services. Means is planning to release more music soon.

Lucky People to play Friday night at the Fair By Sam Jack TSnews The band Lucky People will play the Open Air Arena at 8:30 p.m. Friday, July 9, performing a variety of popular songs from the 1980s to the present day, including funk, rock, dance and pop tunes. The Wichita band’s members consider themselves “lucky people” simply because they get to have fun and make music together, according to guitarist Steve Green. “We try not to play too much; we just have a lot of fun and play really fun events,” Green said a few days before his last Fair appearance, in 2019. “Our goal is to entertain people and play songs that people recognize and hopefully want to dance to. “The only rule is that every song has to be danceable, or we don’t do it.” Lucky People came together in 2006. Some of the members are band and mu-
oke to being the singer in a band.” In addition to Schuetz, all four of the band’s other members sing harmony vocals. The full lineup is Schuetz, Green, drummer Alan Austin, guitarist Shaun Ray and bass player Troy Fischer. Lucky People’s website, www.luckypeopleband.com, features a promo clip from a live performance. “That video, we’re very proud of it,” Green said. “It’s a live performance, no overdubs, and it really does a good job of letting people know what we’re like.”

Mountain Deer Revival to play Saturday night By Sam Jack TSnews
Southern rock band Mountain Deer Revival will play Saturday, July 10, at the Open Air Arena, starting at 9 p.m. The group’s manager, Monica Salmeron described the Revival sound as “rock with a little bit of country influence to it. It’s rock with a little bit of twang. The Allman Brothers are a good comparison.” Band members Jake and Jason Coffey are twins who moved to Wichita as teenagers. The rest of the roster – Dale Ray Shuey, Connor Edmundson, and Matt Ohm – also has local ties. The band’s sound has taken them as far south as Texas and as far north as Chicago, but this is their first time playing the Sedgwick County Fair. “They have a lot of originals. They’re mostly an original band,” Salmeron said. “They play a few covers here and there, just for fun.” Salmeron joined the band as manager about seven years ago, which is also
when the group’s current lineup came together. She has enjoyed traveling with the group and helping to sell merchandise at shows. “These guys are my best friends in the whole world. We always have so much fun together, behind the scenes. We’re always laughing and having a good time,” she said. “Our heart and soul, what every single one of us strives for, is to do good performances, work hard, and get the music out there.” For more info on Mountain Deer Revival, and to listen to some of their songs, go to www.mountaindeerrevival.com.

The new Commercial Building No. 2 at the Sedgwick County Fairgrounds was completed in 2020, and will make its debut at the 2021 Sedgwick County Fair.
New building latest addition to Sedgwick Co. Fairgrounds By Travis Mounts TSnews news@tsnews.com Commercial vendors and their customers will enjoy a new building at this year’s Sedgwick County Fair. The old Building No. 2 was demolished in the fall of 2019, a couple of months after the last Sedgwick County Fair took place. Construction of the new steel building took place in the spring of 2020. A groundbreaking ceremony was held during the 2019 Fair. But with the COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s Fair was cancelled and the building did not make its debut. The new building sits on the footprint of the old structure. Fair Association president Bret Albers said the new building is a little wider than the old one. “It needed a lot of work,” he said about the old building. The new footprint allows for outside vendors to set up along the building’s
west side. That creates more opportunities for vendors to be part of the Fair. That area used to be occupied by an old lean-to that was used for storage. It was not the most attractive thing, and it sat right along a high-traffic area. Albers said the Fair Association continually works to make a wide variety of improvements to the Fairgrounds, which is located in Cheney. The projects change from year to year, but the commitment is the same. “We’re a non-profit that is volunteer based. Whatever money we make goes back into the grounds,” Albers said. That includes seating and stands, buildings, and infrastructure such as water and electric. The commercial buildings are located in the northwest corner of the Fairgrounds, off the left field area of the softball field. The commercial and food booths will open at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 7; at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 8; at 10 a.m. Friday, July 9; and at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 10.

What do the 4-H ribbons mean?
4-H uses the Danish judging system at county and state fairs. The Danish system of judging is a method of evaluation where a 4-H exhibit or process is evaluated against a set of standards, and recognition is awarded on the degree to which the standard has been met by each 4-H member. The standards of excellence are often printed on a judge’s scorecard, and allows for the 4-H exhibit to be judged on one’s own merit, and not in comparison with others in the class. Remember that when you exhibit at the county fair, you are asking for the judge’s opinion. The judge’s opinion is just that: an opinion, and it can vary from judge to judge and day to day. It is
an opportunity to explain what you have learned, and it is an opportunity to learn from an expert. Each project is a success, no matter what color the ribbon may be! In the Danish judging system, there could be any number of purples, blues, reds or whites because one exhibit is not compared to another. In 4-H, it’s believed that using the Danish judging system gives every 4-H member the recognition deserved for the work that was done. It also helps young people recognize the need to improve their skills within a noncompetitive atmosphere. For more information about 4-H, visit www.sedgwick.k-state.edu.
