the importance of being wastd You’re an artist, photographer or illustrator. Often you create for specific commercial reasons because of the task at hand. Ask yourself how much you are able to express your vision. Think about how often you create for purely artistic reasons without commercial restrictions or requirements. We all need a place where we can freely express our imagination, creativity and vision . . . a place where business or economic concerns don’t reign. We need a place where people can gather around ideas, where free will and creative exploration govern. The main goal of wastd is to support photographic and

Make a short introduction of yourself, for example why, when or how did you start being a photographer? In high school I was not good at technical nor artistic drawing yet I felt an appreciation for art and beauty. I liked to frame what I could see through a camera lens. My dad, who was not a professional photographer, gave me his old Nikon F2 when he upgraded.

I went through various phases and after an initial skepticism I loved switching to digital photography. I always wished for immediate visual feedback and independence from labs, darkrooms, technicians. And you can’t beat instant gratification. With digital I have way more freedom and control, but I miss the social aspect of rental darkrooms where you could mingle with other photographers and see their work. Now it is

more of a lonesome and individual experience in front of a computer screen editing, rating, captioning and so on.

You are alert of your surroundings and open to the unexpected. But you kind of have a destination to go to.

Photography as a mission or as a passion?

Your pictures are mostly premeditated, or do you always carry a camera around with you?

Passion. Passions sometimes lead to a missions. How do you choose your subjects? It is a sort of visceral impulse at first. There is a conscious aspect too. It is a little like driving a car. You have a destination in mind but you do not think about what you are doing all the time. It comes natural.

8

wlMagazine w lM Ma M aga az zin z in ne e

I carry a camera at all times. Lately I started shooting less and thinking more about the what, who, how, why I photograph. What about the scope of photography, commenting, storytelling or mere fine art? It depends on the photographer. what is art? what is documentation? Different people may

have different answers. I think you need a bit of everything without going too much in one direction. A balance without losing the instinctual side. art photography can be pretentious, documentarism can be too plain. If you could describe your work with 5 words, what would you say? Can’t describe it in five words. What is the most common

mistake you do in your work, if there’s any? When I am tired I can get lazy. Sometimes I see something and I think i will come back to it later and then I always forget to. I have cheap lenses. If I had expensive lenses 2 stops brighter I could take better photos. but I like to work with what I have. sometimes I see news photographers with expensive Nikon D3s etc and they use those expensive cameras by all

taking the same photo of a photo op. I like to look at details that are not apparently obvious. I used to actually focus more on details rather than being able to capture an image that would give a sense of the whole situation but I got way better working for newspapers and having to deliver that. After a while you learn and the boring assignments make you a better photographer for the interesting assignments.

Who is the target of your photographs, if there’s any?

Reality is not flat either. Different characters have different messages.

I do not think to anyone in particular. people that are curious. people that care. people that are or want to be in my life. people interested in life.

What are going to be your next projects? would like to go back to Haiti and spend more time and show images beyond the suffering and hardship. everyday life. the struggle and the will to live. If you had to suggest a photographer you want to be interviewed, who would be and why?

People is the main subject of your photographs, are the characters intended to mean a message or to be a flat representation of the reality? The world has not been flat for a while.
