Is Galliano out of Fashion?
Who is next? Ricardo Tusci or Marc Jacobs? Full coverage of the John Galliano scandal
by Evrydiki Katsoulaki Miss Dior Cherie perfume, changed her dress for the Oscars on Sunday night and wore a Rodarte gown instead. She had been planning to wear a dress designed by John Galliano. The British-born designer was due to present his Autumn/Winter collection for Dior on Friday 4th of March, and his own collection on Sunday. “They don’t know whether to cancel his show or not’’, said a fashion insider in Paris. However, Galliano’s show ran smoothly without his presence. A spokesman from the LVMH group told Vogue that his presence would cause problems for Dior as the media will be circling to get a piece of him after his show.
A
s fashion week is on its way in the capital of fashion, Paris, Dior’s announcement on firing John Galliano shocked fashion elites and fans of Galliano’s designs all around the world. Galliano faces criminal charges in France for allegedly making racial insults to two women, as seen on video footage published on the Sun’s website. The video with Galliano’s racist comments was published on YouTube on Monday 28th of February. The man who accused the beloved fashion designer has spoken out and given full details of the event. “For me it was a simple bar dispute,” said Philippe Virgitti who, along with his girlfriend Geraldine Bloch, accused Galliano of using a verbal assault towards them. “We were having a beer when he sat beside us. He got aggressive, turned to my friend and said, “Your voice is annoying me, you’re speaking too loudly””. Christian Dior responded with a public announcement, saying that they have started legal proceedings to fire their employee. Best Actress Oscar winner 2011, Natalie Portman, who is also the face of
There are also rumors that Dior had already wanted Galliano out of his position and that the video was online long before it started to recieve this level of publicity. Many fashion bloggers believe that the luxury brand didn’t even try to defend and cover his name.
top names on the list of Christian Dior. Earlier this week, fashion blogs and websites posted additional rumors that the most likely person to get Galliano’s position is Ricardo Tusci. Dior’s fans await a public announcement from LVMH.
Galliano’s designs still rocked the runway, which was presented in an antique mansion on the Avenue Fotch. His designs were a combination of wool suiting, cashmere cocoon coats, open-back and printed silk shirts tucked into draped pencil skirts. Most of his designs for the Fall/Winter 2011 collection were typical Galliano, especially a tapering kimono coat in celadon-green, lavishly embroidered and embellished with a black fox.

Galliano’s firing started rumors about the next fashion head of the Dior regime. Marc Jacobs, and Ricardo Tusci of Givenchy, whose Fall/ Winter 2011 designs literally rocked and were loved by the fashion critics and fashionistas of Paris fashion week, were among the higher candidates for the position of Galliano. Jacobs, however, responded to the rumors by saying to the International Herald Tribune after the Louis Vuitton show that “I haven’t been asked”. With or without Galliano, Dior is ready to fascinate its lovers again. Lanvin’s head deisgner Alber Elbaz is also among the www.jomec.ac.uk/life360

Blessing Japan 12th Annual Japan Fashion Week is cancelled due tothe earthquake in Eastern Japan On 15th March, it was announced that Japan Fashion Week, due to take place in Tokyo this week, has been cancelled. “Due to the multiple concerns regarding current electricity shortages, unreliable transportation, and general safety concerns, the event has been cancelled,” said a statement by the Japan Fashion Week Organization. In light of the devastating earthquake and tsunami which happened a few days before the event was supposed to begin, the organization unsurprisingly cancelled the event due to begin on 21st March. Whilst the extent of the damage caused by the Eastern Japan earthquake became more serious, the Japanese fashion industry also began to gradually realize the consequences of the earthquake. Many brands and businesses have been working hard on their collection for fashion week for six months. However, many companies withdrew their staff from

Japan because of the fear of another earthquake in Tokyo, and the risk of nuclear explosions in northern regions. The damage also affects the fashion economy. The stock market is affected first, especially in non-essential luxury industries. Japan accounted for 11-15% of the €180bn global fashion industry. The crisis has caused fluctuations in the market. In London, Burberry Group has recorded the largest decline, with their share price decreasing by 5.4 percent. In Paris, LVMH Group’s share price dropped by 3%. The Japan Fashion Week Organization said: “Despite this unprecedented national disaster, we will do whatever we can to keep the business flame burning in order to promote new fashion business, and we deeply appreciate your understanding and support.” Hopefully the country will recover in time for next year’s event.
Quadrant Fashion Arrives in New York All the fashionistas were focusing on New York Fashion Week from 10th to 17th February. This time, the holder changed the tradition of previous years: the bridge was moved from Midtown Manhattan’s Bryant Park to Lincoln Center. During these 8 days, nearly 90 world-famous fashion designers showed fashion trends of Autumn/ Winter 2011.

Givenchy: Spark of Japanese elements
What came first: the Gaga or the egg?
Givenchy Haute Couture Spring /Summer 2011 Show brings people a visual feast. Designer Riccardo Tisci’s inspiration for this year is Japan. The elements which exist in the ten designs, such as Samurai armor and crane embroideries, are from Akira Kurosawa’s samurai era lens. It is worth mentioning that, all the models of this show are Asian faces.
Lady Gaga has the new action! The outrageous singer suprised again the masses. She arrived at the red carpet of the 53rd Grammy Awards in a giant egg, to coordinate with the new song “Born This Way”, she was encased in the egg carried by four half-naked attendees. Lady Gaga was nominated for six Grammy awards. She spent 72 hours inside the giant egg.

moment. I get my inspiration of dressing from many people, IT girls and streetfashion.
Q What do you think is the greatest
attraction of fashion design? Wang: In this industry, I have the greatest interested in designing clothes. The process of dress making is fantastic! Meanwhile, fashion buyer is also a good job which I think can make me confident and bring me great pleasure.
Q Do you have favorite brand or
designer? Wang: I like Alexander Mcqueen and YSL. In simple terms, their designs are unique and of great personal style.
Q What is your must-buy item this
season? Wang: What I want most currently is a Celine Luggage Canvas Shopper Puppy bag, one of the most popular bags this year. It can match different styles of clothes, with a bit of lovely and hippie. In addition, I plan to buy a pair of classical Christian Louboutin shoes. Women are always crazy about its red sole.
Q Can you sum up your style? Bao Wang cutting the fabrics for her design.
Q When did you become interested in
fashion and design? Wang: I have become interested in fashion since I was just nine years old, starting drawing. However, my understanding of fashion was very simple at that time. I think it is the influence from my family that encouraged me to choose this area.
Q Where do you get your inspiration for
dressing? Do you have your own fashion icon? Wang: I usually choose clothes for myself based on my mood at that time and the occasions, but sometimes I also take example by those good collocations from both fashion magazines and websites. I have not had a fixed fashion icon at the
Wang: Generally speaking, I prefer to wear simple and easy. But I do not want to put myself in any limited style at the present stage. I enjoy trying different styles. Of course, I usually add my own style on them.
Q Can you talk about which show was
most impressive for you at top fashion weeks 2011Autumn/Winter? Wang: At London Week, I like Sass & Bide which use large warm color. Mean while, Vivienne Westwood Red Label is always my favorite, the punk style they use with gray is fantastic. At Milan Week, I take a great fancy to Dolce & Gabbana. Its show was half the tomboy look and half the girl look, like a date. And when talking about Paris Week, of course, I like Jean Paul Gaultier. The white hair of models looks like the call from spring.

stars into your wardrobe, how about channelling the style on the screen instead? The retro glamour of The King’s Speech, the elegant ballet of Black Swan and the sturdy leather look of True Grit have all permeated the fashion consciousness, and taking elements from each can update your wardrobe. Becky Bruce shows you how to get the look.
The King’s Speech
Translate the style of Hollywood’s big winners into your everyday wardrobe.
The Big Winners
Best Picture: The King’s Speech Best Actor: Colin Firth (King’s Speech) Best Actress: Natalie Portman (Black Swan)
The undisputed winner of the night, The King’s Speech, deserves a fashion Oscar too for its elegantly understated 30s glamour. Combine the film’s success with the critical acclaim for HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, and it’s easy to see 30s style is in full swing. Rather than the decadent glitz of the early 30s, the film portrays the more sombre side of the decade. Costume designer for the film Jenny Beavan told the Hollywood Reporter that most of the films fashion was genuine vintage, so it’s an achievable look for the vintage shopper. The colour palette is dusky blues and royal purples: classy and regal. A fake-fur stole would be the ultimate King’s Speech accessory, worn with aplomb by Helena Bonham-Carter. Getting an authentic 30s look depends on the hair and make-up. Benefit makeup artist Sophie Elliott says: “You need to get a really matte look on the skin. Start with light and even foundation, then accentuate the eyes with a flick of eyeliner at the corners.” If you’re feeling adventurous, Sophie suggests giving your lips a completely different shape using plum lipstick. “Don’t be afraid to go outside the edges of your lips to create a dramatic look”, she advises. Then once you’ve achieved a retro ‘coiffure’ – try a finger perm - pop a jauntily angled cloche hat on top to truly evoke the Queen Mum.

True grit
Black Swan

Perhaps using Jeff Bridges’ eyepatched vigilante as a style icon is going a bit far, but pint-sized Hailee Steinfeld has raised True Grit’s fashion credentials. On screen, Hailee’s character sports an oversized khaki jacket tied with a thick, looped leather belt, a creative alternative to the trench coat for the spring months. The look of the film is utilitarian, portraying a realistic cowboy look. Cowboys have been a perennial fashion inspiration, found this season in the form of fringed leather and skinny belts. Cowboy boots are an essential part of any True Grit wardrobe. Pairing them with jeans to put a spin on your normal clothes, or with a floaty peasant skirt to create a perfect transitional spring to summer look. Pascale says: “If you’re shy of the full-on cowboy look, concentrate on the colours and textures rather than the style. You can’t go wrong with dark browns and beiges.” For a less masculine look, try the prairie girl theme found on the runways of spring/summer 2011. The gingham bandanas of D&G and the studded leather of Ralph Lauren incorporate rustic fabrics into a modern look. For hair, think Pippi Longstocking. Braided pigtails tucked behind the ears are casual and sweet, on their own or underneath a hat. A wide-brimmed Stetson isn’t necessary; a chocolate trilby with a braided leather strap will do. The artistic elements of Black Swan have been as highly lauded as its dramatic performances. The elaborate stage costumes worn by competing starlets Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman were designed by label Rodarte, and have sparked a revival of the balletic style. The film avoids the pastels of traditional ballet, instead adopting a striking monochromatic scheme juxtaposing the light and lace of the white swan with the icy darkness of the black. The way to blend ballet into your wardrobe is to combine the floaty and frilly with the masculine and modern. The stylists at ASOS recommend mixing tomboy tailoring with soft ruffles to update the dance look. A skin-tight leotard tucked into slouchy tailored trousers epitomises the trend. To keep it simple, the easiest way to incorporate dance into the every day wardrobe is with ballet pumps. “Pair them with white tights for a really ‘ballet’ look”, suggests fashion blogger Pascale Cumming-Benson. She also recommends feathers as a way to be swan-like in your daywear: “A feathered headband, such as those from Accessorize would be perfect”. Combine your headband, feathered or silky, with a tight bun high on your head. High hair is no longer the preserve of the pony club set.

WHAT
WHEN
WHY
Fashion has no age. Even catwalk trends come back every decade or do. However vintage clothing is not just something old. Garments produced earlier than 1920s are considered as antiques, clothes from 1920 to 1990 are vintage. The word ‘vintage’ itself comes from wine terminology, where as we know, the older the wine the higher the value. In fashion vintage became a sustainable form of clothing alternative to maistream. But be careful, there is a difference between vintage and second-hand clothing. Real vintage has ageless style, good quality, uniqueness and history.
Fashions come and go, but there are certain “vintage” items that have a timeless appeal. Interest in vintage existed always, but the awareness and demand increased dramatically in 1990s. Fashion designers such as Diane Von Furstenberg, Laura Ashiley started presenting vintage-inspired collections. Environmental issues such as recycling and repairing as well as fair-trade and labour abuse concerns add social value to the vintage clothing. Experts say that vintage trend became even bigger with the recession as old clothes are often cheaper.
When we think of vintage fashion we often associate it with such fashion icons as Audrey Hepburn, Jacqueline Kennedy, Sophia Loren. It makes us feel classy and unique at the same time. Contrary to high-street fashion, which is too common, wearing vintage dress will make your look one of a kind. Another reason to choose vintage is the good quality and fine materials, which are rare in today’s commercial world. Vintage elements are often handmade and represent the idea of value for money. They show your appreciation of the past and serve as an investment in ageless beauty.

Marc Jacobs, Vera Wang and Ralph Lauren all presented vintage collections during New York and Milan Fashion Weeks. Cheap chic is now trendy as ever before. So think again before cleaning out your closet and throwing away old Grandma-style dresses.
WHO
WHERE
HOW
Many celebrities choose vintage style. Sisters Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Anna Wintour, Miuccia Prada, Kate Bosworth are considered to the first trend-setters. Julia Roberts, Renee Zelwegger, Kate Moss, Reese Witherspoon, Dita von Teese became further ambassadors of vintage looks.
Vintage clothing might be purchased in charity shops, of which there are many in Cardiff. The most popular specialised boutique is Oxfam, although it can be a little bit overpriced. Charity shops like Marie Curie, Cancer Research UK offer a good variety for a low price. The Vintage Affair shop in Morgan Arcade has a variety of clothes, jewellery and homewear from Chanel pieces to affordable dresses all dated and with interesting stories from the past. Several times a year City Hall becomes a venue for Vintage Fairs, where you can discover more, meet all the owners and vintage sellers and, of course, get the best bargains. To go even further you can also visit antique markets, auctions or famous vintage events such as Frock Me! in Chelsea or Brighton. And of course, there is a big offer on vintage online at www.myvintage.co.uk, www.rokit.co.uk and other.
Contrary to high-street fashion, vintage makes you look unique and expresses your individuality. It discloses your creativity and encourages to find your own style. It is not necessary to have a total vintage look or follow particular patterns. The best way is to combine your regular clothes with vintage elements. Sometimes even one vintage item can inspire you to create an exlusive look around it. It’s time for experimenting!

EXPERT’S VIEW
IC H C T E STRE
UMI. or Umida Yusupova, is a popular Uzbek designer who studied fashion in Italy and Great Britain, and presented her collections in Paris and Milan. The word vintage has a special meaning to her. Life 360: What is ‘vintage’ for you? UMI: Vintage items have a special art value. It evokes associations with a particular epoch, style and cult. Who owns a cult item, owns the time, in a particular way. The main characteristics of vintage are authenticity and symbol of past. Life 360: Why is vintage fashionable? UMI: Passion for labels, global distribution and power of trends made customers look similar all over the world. Labels became predictable attributes of status. And this caused the new trend – desire to be unique, to have an exclusive garment, which has its own history. This is how everyone can create his or her own image. Vintage is very inspiring and handy in this regard. Life 360: What can you tell us about your first experience with vintage? UMI: Vintage came into my life earlier then I even knew this term. When dingy colours attracted me most and naphthalene [moth balls] became my favourite smell. Frankly speaking, I was not planning to become a designer. When I could not find clothes I wanted to wear, I was inspired by my grandmother’s closet and decided to learn sewing. When I got a whole collection of dresses in style of 30s and 40s, I met new friends from the association of young designers, which was just establishing at that time. They invited me to participate in their first fashion show and this is how it all started. I should admit that it is a love of vintage which opened the doors to my profession. Life 360: How often do fashion trends come back? UMI: Circles of fashion repeat every two or three decades. This is why we come back to old styles, silhouettes and fabrics. Economic, social and political changes influence on fashion circles. For example, today many designers are concerned with environmental issues. Maybe this makes vintage even more trendy.
www.jomec.ac.uk/life360
Life 360: How do designers use vintage in their work? UMI: Many designers use vintage as a source of inspiration. They find an interesting item at an antique market and build the whole collection around it. This is how Dolce and Gabanna work, for example. They buy a lot of old garments in Paris. Stella McCartney is often inspired by the wardrobe of her mother and fashion of 70s in general. Miuccia Prada likes to explore second-hand shops. Marc Jacobs is an admirer of vintage and often turns to colours and forms from past. He has a special collection where he keeps adding unique items from all around the world. Life 360: What is your favourite place to find vintage items? UMI: There are several popular vintage spots around the world: Montmartre in Paris, Portobello and Camden in London, flea-markets in Berlin, the Arno river embankment in Florence. I have visited all of them, but my favourite one is probably in London. I have studied in the college on Portobello road and often travelled to Camden, which always impressed me by its variety and affordable prices. In Florence all the architecture and atmosphere harmonise with antique look, as it is meant to live in a house of 15th century and wear vintage here. While in Paris I always admired people on the streets, their outfit, style and taste. Life 360: What is your prognosis of the vintage trend? UMI: To answer this question I need to come back from my emotions back to rational ideas on the future of fashion. We should admit that today no one accepts particular role-models of fashion as it used to be. The trend is towards the limited edition items, hand made, quality materials, individually made dresses and careful use of recourses. It means that vintage will stay in fashion for a long while.

Wenda James-Rowe is a successful businesswoman of image consultants The Style Team. WENDA JAMES-ROWEN is a fashion consultant and the director of image consultancy The Style Team situated at Cardiff bay. The 40 year old Wales native, originally from Mumbles, is a freelance fashion columnist in the South Wales Echo, has her own radio program with BBC Wales; is a freelance fashion advisor at Peacocks: a renowned clothing store and has been invited by Bon Marche to conduct regular image management workshops for their employees. She is a glamorous mother who in her free time loves cooking, travelling and spending time with her 7 year old son and her husband. A determined person, fun and energetic, she has a large collection of shoes and accessories and is proud of being Welsh. It seem like Cardiff has its own Carrie Bradshaw! Why fashion? Since I was a child I liked clothes and being fashionable. My glamorous mum was always the inspiration behind my dress sense but it wasn’t until much later in my life that I become seriously involved with fashion. It was during the years of my Hotel Management training that I realized my love of working with customers. After finishing my studies I worked for Coca Cola as a sales promoter for a few years and it was only in my thirties that I realized that I wanted to do something for myself and I opened two beauty businesses in Mumbles and in Uplands. I decided to move to Cardiff when my husband was offered a job here. When I opened my private business in Cardiff, I faced a lot of competition and thus decided to undergo training to become an image consultant with a business called Colour Me Beautiful.
14 Life 360 March 2011
What difficulties have you faced? The biggest difficulty one faces in the fashion industry is that of competition; it makes it extremely challenging to keep yourself out there and think of new ideas to improve your reputation. It is for this reason that, I try to keep myself in the public eye and keep my name known. I believe that when you are self-employed you can’t sit back and wait for things to happen but instead you make things happen for you. How do you balance career and family? No matter how busy I may be, I make sure I find time for my family. We regularly organise road trips and family dinners. I would never hire a nanny as I believe that my son needs to grow up in a natural environment, where his mother is around to teach him values and discipline. I love my son and my husband and I want to be there for them.
“Fashion is all about how you feel inside. ” How important is fashion to you? I think it is all about how you feel inside. For me it’s a way of life. Most of the time my customers want to get out of the canvas and showcase their personality more. It’s all about building their self-esteem. I remember a lady, a solicitor and a mother of two children who found it quite hard to dress professionally for work.
So I advised her on how to update her wardrobe and gave her a new look. The end was a moment of sheer happiness; we both witnessed a stream of happy tears when she walked out a new person from the fitting room in the shop. Are the British fashionable? Yes, I believe that the British are very fashionable, they love fashion and follow the latest trends. They are media driven and are pressurized by the print media specifically to look thinner and stylish. In Cardiff many times I have stopped at traffic lights because I have been blown away by the style of many girls or boys. Cardiff is really unique. What are you working on now? I am organizing a style swap where women swap unwanted clothes. I feel that as a result of the ongoing financial crisis, people are short on cash and style swap provides a great chance for women to exchange items that they don’t want and take home alternative options. Women only wear 20 % of their wardrobe and 8% of those clothes are not really used, making them perfect for swapping with something else. What is your advice to young women? It’s all about knowing yourself and knowing your personality and really trying to dress as well as you can with the budget you’ve got. Invest in key pieces whether a pair of boots or a little black dress. Buy accessories which twist your style and add to your sparkle with accessories that can transfer your outfit from a boho to a rock chic. In my workshops with Peacocks, I take outfits and teach the staff simple tricks to make an ordinary dress suitable for different occasions, from a romantic evening to a rock concert.

Dubai Fashion
Her designs are beloved by many fashion critics at London Fashion Week. The eye-catching prints and her sleek vibrant signature style grasp people’s attention, and her bright turquoise ‘Persian drum’ is one of her top selling designs at Topshop. Mary’s limited-edition designs, along with the nail studio brand WAH are featured in the Oxford Circus flagship store for a limited time only. It is worth trying on some of her designs; especially the silky print scarf which is more or less a reminder of the Emilio Pucci.

Sixties revisited the catwalks of New York’s fashion show of DKNY and Anna Sui in London Fashion Week. The Burberry Prorsum collection was full of brightly coloured coats and flat caps, accompanied by an elegant touch; a very subtle take on beauty. Make-up artists didn’t literally follow Sixties references, but went for more light shades of brown or grey on eyes and nude lipstick. There was not a slick of black eyeliner in sight. One message for this season is definitely: ‘Return to nature’.
No Strings Attached
This movie poses the question: is it possible to casually have sex with someone and not run the risk of falling in love? For Natalie Portman, in the movie it seems that the answer is yes, but everything changes when she realizes that the long-term possibilities of casual sex, is growing to something tenderer when she met again a friend from the past, Aston Kutcher. I found the whole concept of the plot similar to the story of ‘When Harry Met Sally’: can men and women be friends without having sex? Twenty-two years later, the question is the same.
