HONGKOU CREEK Waterfront Urban Design 12.3 ha Team Work 2013

T

he focus of this project was in urban redevelopment based on water-city relationship and historic building restoration and reuse. The project was strongly emphasized on information collection, research methodologies, spatial analysis and evaluation based on investigation.

T

his work is the result of a team effort of foreign and Chinese student groups. The whole site was divided in four blocks to increase the research speed and encourage creative thinking on a group level.

W

orkwise each group had similar tasks for each block. My work included surveying, data collection and analysis, designing and ideation, sketching, diagramming, planning and massing, model/plan optimization.

LOCATION

VISION

T

L

he Site⓪ is located in the South of Hongkou①, a northern district of Shanghai proper. It was formerly a part of the International Concession②, an island of western society in the past.

ocation of the site makes it a great transitional and recreational spot. Residential areas to the north provide a flow to the local commercial and recreational centers as well as places of great interest like The Bund ③ or skyline of Lujiazui ④.

Nowadays it is a quiet neighborhood to the north from one of the most famous places in Shanghai - The Bund③ and across the Huangpu River from another famous landmark - skylines of Lujiazui④ in Pudong district. Hongkougang river flows through the middle of the site, which is the developing axis from Jiangnan water town to modern commercial district.

W

T

here are some Linong building blocks around the site. They are a valuable historic heritage of Shanghai and with effective strategies of integration, they can contribute to the forming of Hongkougang waterfront in the path of becoming a characteristic mark of this area.

❸ ❷

- 05 -

ith this in mind the design goal concentrates on reinforcing aesthetic, transportation and comfort values for the urban planning and architecture design of the site. Our approach was embodied through consequential change of the waterfront areas into public-private relationship pattern where local communities as well as tourists can gather, socialize or rest. The area’s future could be stimulated by the mass construction of North Bund and removing of the water gate.

LOCAL LANDMARKS

A

lthough there are some minor historic buildings on the site, the local neighborhood represents an interesting mix of old and modern architecture.

ISSUES Lack of Parking Space

Waterfront and narrow streets greatly reduce availability of free parking space.

Impeded Pedestrian Movement

Cars are parked wherever possible, sometimes blocking the way for the pedestrians.

Lack of Green Spaces

High urbanization and lack of trees and plants around the construction site.

GLOBAL CONCEPT OBJECTIVES Connectivity & Accessibility

Inaugurate a strong active transport network to promote an easy and efficient logistics and pedestrian flow.

Identity Revitalization

Renovate and reuse buildings of historic architectural heritage to add interest and value to the land.

G

lobal concept is the main design direction for the whole site that the entire team has come up and agreed with. It’s about reunion around the river, where it acts as the zone subdivision core and main pedestrian movement axis.

Pedestrian Zoning

Rearrange pedestrian and vehicle transportation routes to promote car-free alleys and easy accessibility for the transport.

LOCAL CONCEPT

Waterfront Destination

Reinforce the aesthetic role of the waterfront and improve the connection between the opposite shores.

Beauty and Order

Provide modern high quality landscaping and public space solutions with the focus on the simple aesthetic forms.

L - 08 -

ocal concept follows the main but with minor changes. It's a personal vision where I connect a newly added bund with a courtyard by removing waterfront side of the building and guiding the flow from the road to the river.

GENERAL PLAN

PARAMETRIC LOUVERS Renovation & Parametric Design Individual Work 2015

T

he proposal is for a derelict factory, to repurpose and renovate it, invigorating an old building into new productive unit of a busy city. The project had two goals. Main goal was to design functional parametric louver system for the building facades that conveyed specific practical or aesthetic ideas. Secondary goal was to increase the floor area ratio by experimenting with the original structure and floor slabs to meet preset project requirements.

OLD FACTORY

O

NEW OFFICE

S

riginally the building was built for industrial needs. In the past the factory was producing a set of mechanical parts for railway construction and maintenance.

M

C

ade for such work, factory’s reinforced concrete structure was designed to withstand industrial loads and weight of heavy duty machines. This made functional repurpose and renovation of the building a challenging and demanding task.

hanghai fast urbanization got to the area of the factory as well, making itы original function obsolete and a sore on the local skyline.

urrently old factory serves as a government facility office building and is open to the public for business activities and management. This implies an office conditions which, taking in consideration building’s location and orientation, faces several issues.

LOCATION

T

he site is located in the north-west of Shanghai at the crossing of two busy highways: West Zhongshan rd. and Changning rd.

WEST ZH

ISSUES Noise pollution

The building is facing a very busy two level highway.

Insolation

Building is oriented along the North-South axis. Such orientation causes overheating and glare during early and late hours, not preferable for the office buildings.

- 12 -

WEST DEFINITION

H

ere the control points define the shape of the extruded surface. Then the surface is randomly populated and changed by a set of attractor points. The changes in the surface are used to form a wavy pattern and a structure for the paneling and bearings.

EAST DEFINITION

S

ame approach is used here as well with the only difference in control point generation. If in the west definition control points were defined on a 2D plane, here they are defined by a pair of Rhino points that were used for generation of new points. This was done to explore a different workflow for the similar task.

- 13 -

PANEL DESIGN T

he panel design is inspired by the form of an acoustic insulation used in audio recording studios around the world. It has an attractive look, greatly reduce echo effects and soften the sounds.

T

he main task of this algorithm is random replacement. First, it takes a set of original panels and splits it randomly into five. Then it modifies the panels in each set to make them look according to a predetermined design. After that they are baked into Rhino geometry.

orizontal perspective sections are here to show the structure and volume of interior spaces.

INTERIOR CHANGES

T

otal floor area was increased by additional floor insertions between some of the tallest floors. This greatly increased the overall floor area but made the ceilings low.

L

ow ceilings can negatively influence some people and cause drop in productivity, to minimize negative effects of low ceilings slabs on the office floors were pulled from the eastern side to form an atrium, turning office corridors into public terraces.

BUBBLE HOUSE Experimental Design Team Work 2014

T

he proposal of Product Development Program was to create, design and test innovative ideas in a search for a solution for a specific problem. Such problems were provided by a group of investors from different industries around the world. One of the presented problems lay in the technology of rapid multiple building construction for a small, semi transportable temporary living space, that could be used for tourism, hiking or camping.

M

y team role included data collection and data analysis, conceptual ideation, sketching and designing, laser scanning, 3D model creation and optimization, prototyping and good old physical labor in final stages.

BRAIN STORMING

W

eekly brainstorming sessions with entire team were held to understand and assess current problems, conduct idea exploration and idea evaluation.

PROJECT MEETINGS

R

LASER SCANNING

egular meetings with project tutors and the team were held to report on the development progress and plan out future actions and preparations.

O

ne of my tasks was to prepare a working 3D model from point cloud to enable further testing and experimentation in virtual environments later in product development.

- 19 -

DIGITAL MANUFACTURE

A

nother of my tasks was to apply robot arm for component milling at the latest stages of the development. I’ve learned the tool however it wasn’t used in the project.

A

TAILOR STUDIO

fter establishing the main course for the methods of rapid construction we started tests on flexible PVC, a durable, transparent, nontoxic and heat resistant synthetic fabric, a common material in inflatable product industry. We found a studio and ordered our first small prototype model.

P

PU FACTORY

olyurethane foam was chosen for its ability for massive and fast expansion from a liquid state as well as great structural and insulation properties. The owner of the factory showed us different types of foams, explained their properties and helped us pick the one that suited the project the most.

- 20 -

PROTOTYPE 0.1

A

fter all the preparations the day for the first prototype has come. First test is always the most risky and very problematic yet at the same time it’s the most informative and full of discoveries. In the beginning we planned to attach special wings on both sides of the balloon to see how foam would form around them but that idea was discarded because we didn't

know how polyurethane foam would react with PVC. So the goal of the first try was to test the PU coating, balloon-foam interaction, foam strength and other characteristics. To prevent the hot PU foam from gluing with PVC bubble it was fully covered with a cotton sheet. This prototype was the proof of concept and wasn’t design to inhabit any people.

- 21 -

PROTOTYPE 0.2

S

econd prototype was loon. This time it had people. We were testing possibilthe foam around the door and window

made weeks later with a bigger bala flat bottom and could inhabit two ity of attaching special elements to guide frames which were attached to the surface of

the balloon, the mechanical properties of the joints and effects of direct foam spraying on the balloon. In the end we found that hot foam does stick to PVC but not permanently, that the foam can bear the weight of the door and window frames, that resulting interior space is quiet and warm because of foam’s excellent heat and sound insulating properties.

- 22 -

TENCENT WE SUMMIT 2014

F

inal stage of the project was a planned trip to WE Summit in Beijing organized by Tencent - Chinese Internet giant. 2014 Summit under the code name "Nothing but the Future" where our investor gave a presentation about the next generation city building and where our team built the third prototype and presented it as a concept prototype.

FOLK MUSEUM Architecture Conservation Individual Work 2013

T

he proposal for the project was to design a folk museum for cultural heritage of local neighborhood as urbanization and modernization eventually sweeps over the old parts of Shanghai. Project's key characteristic was a 34 meters long wall that was leftover from the demolition and was required to be incorporated in the museum design.

he site has an irregular shape and lies on crossing of North Maoming and Weihai roads. Subway stations of lines 2, 12 and 13 are in the immediate vicinity and The Bund is located two stations away. Urbanization is developing all around the site, bringing chain shops, shopping plazas and other public services to the quiet streets of this old neighborhood.

CONCEPT

M

useum is a place for a public display of works of art or items of interest. Most exhibits are kept inside and displayed out of a glass box protected from the environment while being visible to the public.

T

he wall however is the largest and valuable exhibit in the museum and can be displayed not only to the visitors but the outside public. This can promote museum in a creative way and invite more people to pay a visit.

CODE & ART Creative Exploration Individual Work 20**

W

hether with pens and brushes or keyboard and mouse, art is the final destination. Everything else is just a tool.

Random terrain generation -Personal project

CODING: PRACTICAL

R

hino has a rich variety of tools but sometimes you need something special. For example, for one project I was making a relief geometry based on the physical data from a DWG file with over 10,000 text objects all in one layer. Because that data had a unique text height I could cherry pick from all the text objects in the model. Fast, accurate and simple.

CODING: CREATIVE

C

ode can be used to visualize all sorts of concepts and ideas, imagination is the only limit. I like to code during my spare time, learning from others or trying to visualize something myself. It is always an interesting process that can teach you something new. Currently I'm most interested in motion graphics and minimalistic design, simple shapes and soft colors.

DIGITAL & TRADITIONAL ART

"To the Stars" Retrofuturism Poster, Ai

L

iving in the digital age we are surrounded by digital art. As an architect I can't avoid using some of the modern digital tools professionally. I like to explore new techniques and tools through personal art projects, there is always something new and interesting out there in the creative community, something that can enrich and improve architecture visualization or vice versa. For example algorithm below was used to create random star clusters for the retrofuturistic space poster (leftmost image) and colored automatically based on modern stellar classification.
