Publisher’s Note Speaking at a political rally in Edinburgh (Scotland) in 1857, Benjamin Disraeli is often quoted as saying that “change is inevitable … in a progressive country change is constant”. Disraeli was twice elected prime minister of Great Britain and his prophetic commentary in Scotland has proven itself to be true throughout the world. As I’m preparing for this year’s IBC exhibition in Amsterdam I thought back to some of the changes we see in the IBC show since it was first held in the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London in 1967. There were just 32 exhibitors and 500 conference delegates, and of course broadcasting was a very different business. In the 1960s broadcasting was very much an analogue world, where the introduction of colour television was still a new innovation. What would have been the reaction of the delegates to that first IBC to be told that, 45 years on, not only would they have a computer on their desk but that it would be capable of editing high definition video. And that they would carry a telephone in their pocket wherever they went in the world – which would also be an HD video camera? In 1992 the IBC exhibition moved to Amsterdam and from 1994 it became an annual event that has remained in Amsterdam ever since. Today IBC’s management is continually looking at ways to develop the event to meet the rapidly changing needs of the industry. Earlier this year they announced plans to run “IBC Content Everywhere” – a content initiative that will be launched formally in Amsterdam 2014 and then rolled out in Dubai, November 2014 and Sao Paulo in 2015, at a date to be confirmed. IBC remains the leading event on the global stage for everyone involved in content creation, management and delivery. By remaining close to its industry roots it continues to deliver a conference and exhibition which are comprehensive, stimulating and relevant to the real needs of its visitors. Despite the many changes that have taken place, it remains a show that’s true to its roots – proudly proclaiming itself to be an event run “by the industry – for the industry”. I look forward to seeing you in Amsterdam.

More power for DSLR and Digital Cinema cameras Snell expands ICE Channel-in-a-Box solution At IBC2013, Snell is launching a significant expansion of its industry-leading ICE channel-in-a-box, including two all-new models. The core ICE product now offers even greater functionality and horsepower in a more compact footprint. The new systems include ICE-LE, a low-cost 1U version that offers a streamlined feature set for smaller operations or simple video server refresh projects; and ICE SAN, which provides large-scale shared content storage to give multiple ICE units instant access to media. "Broadcasters are under pressure like never before to deliver more channels with fewer resources. By bundling the entire play-out chain into a single, cost-effective channel in a box, ICE provides an ideal solution for media operations of all sizes," said Karl Mehring, senior product manager at Snell. "And now, with a choice of two versatile ICE systems plus ICE SAN, we're offering our customers a broader range of options for deploying channel-in-a-box capabilities that are totally fit for purpose. With greater channel density, more functionality, and more horsepower in a smaller box, ICE directly addresses our customers' growing requirement to broadcast more complex channels while saving space and minimizing power usage."

PAG has introduced new, camera specific D-Tap Power Leads for a range of popular cameras. When used in combination with a new PAG V-Mount Plate they make it possible to achieve extended camera run-time and a higher current draw, for 3

An informed business choice Question: When selecting a vendor for your next AV installation, which of these items is the LEAST important item you should consider? a. Price quoted for the project b. Installation quality of the installations dept c. Company reputation in the marketplace d. Financial stability of the supplier

Answer: (a) In today’s tough economic climate it’s obviously important to consider price as an important factor in choosing a supplier for your next AV installation. But choosing a supplier based on price alone is a surefire path to failure and an ineffective AV solution. Chose a vendor based on their ability to provide an AV solution that meets your requirements and make sure you’re buying from a reputable organization with certified staff and the resources to back-up your installation on a longterm basis.

SACIA is the leading trade association for the professional AV industry in Southern Africa. We promote the adoption of professional standards in the local market and our members commit to truth, honesty and the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of the audiovisual profession. support and devote his entire attention to his work – even under the most unusual filming conditions and in the most extreme temperatures. "I like to describe my Sachtler tripods with three words: dependability, quality, and performance," Allard says.

This must be told

From Japan, Allard reported on the aftermath of the tsunami in 2011. © Allard

German engineering for Al Jazeera with Sachtler’s Video 20 Olympic Games, natural disasters, and bombings – cameraman Matthew Allard has reported about almost everything for Al Jazeera, the international news broadcaster that has its headquarters in Doha, Qatar.

A

llard has already been recognized 15 times by the Australian Cinematographers Society for his impressive documentaries and news features. During shoots all over the world, he relies on the Video 20 fluid head by Sachtler, part of Vitec Videocom, a Vitec Group company. With its easy and ergonomic operation, the legendary fluid head by Sachtler has been an ideal tool for daily work in electronic newsgathering for more than 50 years.

describes. "Wherever I am, I always rely on my Video 20 and Video 18 tripod systems." In unimaginable heat or freezing temperatures, in water or sand, indoors or in the jungle – the precise craftsmanship allows the cameraman to depend on his camera

For Allard, the Video 20 has become indispensable for capturing his news stories and documentaries. The Video 20’s patented damping system with its 7 horizontal and 7 vertical grades of drag (+0), the finely tuned counterbalance with Speedbalance technology, as well as modern and high-quality construction material allow Allard to work professionally and creatively all over the world. On his travels, Allard runs into meaningful stories everywhere which – in his opinion – must be told: "I want to document the experiences of completely normal people and make these experiences accessible for everyone. I think every one of us has an interesting story to tell. My job is to show the beauty and sometimes also the sadness of the events, and to make all of this tangible to the viewers." As a storyteller, the cameraman focuses on capturing individual lives authentically and objectively in his documentaries. "It is their story, not mine," Allard explains. Matthew Allard has already travelled to over 40 countries to produce reports about current events. "I have been working for Al Jazeera for the last six years, but in the industry for the last 23. This is why my job brings me so much happiness, even though I have seen a lot of horrible things," the Australian cameraman enthusiastically says. With the dependable Sachtler Video 18 and Video 20 fluid heads in his suitcase, Allard is well prepared for every situation, both present and future.

Three words are enough "After the devastating Tsunami in 2011, I spent 150 days in the Japanese disaster area to report on the aftermath live on location," Allard

ver the last 20 years MBC Group, has grown to become a wellestablished media group that enriches people’s lives through information, interaction and entertainment. Based in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, MBC Group includes 12 television channels.

Established reputation The broadcaster engaged Media Group International (MGI) on the basis of the company’s established reputation for high quality systems integration and project management. MGI has over 35 years’ experience of systems integration in the Gulf region and represents many worldwide broadcast equipment manufacturers. Raed Bacho, Broadcast Manager, MBC Group says: “MGI’s reputation for delivering world-class broadcast solutions was a key factor in our decision to award the company the contract. Our Cairo News facility is a major investment and one that required careful planning. We were elighted by the efficiency and timely results.” MGI’s brief was to provide MBC Group with an entire News facility consisting of a broadcast control room/gallery, a central apparatus room, an audio studio, a broadcast studio, a Master Control Room, a

Newsroom and various editing and production facilities. The company was also responsible for the entire IT infrastructure and the installation of all power requirements. “MBC’s on-air requirements meant that we were up against extremely tight deadlines,” says Paul Wallis, MGI’s Sales Director. “We also undertook this project during the recent political unrest, which created its own set of issues. On at least one occasion our team could not leave the facility overnight because demonstrators were protesting outside.” At a time when many companies are avoiding outlay in Egypt, MBC’s decision to build this new facility – and its equipment choices – reflect its determination to invest in the very latest technology in order to bring high quality news coverage to the people of Egypt.

12

“In consultation with MGI’s experienced technical team, MBC selected some of the latest ground breaking equipment, including cuttingedge Grass Valley LDX-80 studio cameras that adopt CMOS technology as opposed to traditional CCD,” says Wallis. “At the heart of the system is a full Avid Newsvision production system, complemented by the latest Viztr on air graphics. Other technical highlights include a powerful Ross live production switcher, a Trilogy Broadcast communications system, a state of the art video wall and a Studer All-In-One Vista audio mixing console, the first of its kind to be installed in Egypt.” Wallis adds that the project was not without its challenges, but thanks to MGI’s excellent relationships with the various manufacturers involved, these were quickly overcome. “We were faced with some tough technology changes that could have delayed the on-air deadline, but fortunately we had chosen manufacturers who helped us work around this problem and enabled us to keep our commitment to MBC,” he says. MBC’s News facility in Cairo is now up and running, delivering news to the broadcaster’s Egyptian viewers.

Is 4K hype or the next big thing in Pro AV? Charting the emergence of 4K in the professional AV space and predicting its growth has a soothsaying quality to it, with analysts and integrators doing their best to predict the most likely future of a pro-AV industry on the cusp of 4K. Meanwhile the industry peers over the cliff and wonders who is going to follow digital cinema into the depths of Ultra HD, and more importantly, why they should invest in four times more pixels than the now-common HD format.

A

s the growth of digital cinema and its foray into 4K starts to tail off, other verticals are currently using or showing an interest in the avalanche of pixels that come with 4K. “The projector market is going to want 4K in niches like visualization and simulation,” says Mike Fisher, senior analyst at Futuresource. “Oil companies, car designers, niche markets like military briefing rooms are all resolution hungry and are likely to be the first ones to bite. Not the mainstream corporate or education installations that run the internet, TV or PowerPoint.” Fisher sees more interesting developments on the flat- panel side of things, a market now firmly settled on 1080p. “Especially for 60-inch flat screens, we will see a relatively quick transition toward 4K in high-level installations, like rental and staging. You might see some corporate reception, big-impact screens or very high-end screens in flagship retail.”

Samsung has unveiled a unique Ultra-HD television, with a 'floating' design it says could revolutionise home cinema. The 85-inch TV is housed within an easel-like frame, which allows it to rotate freely and appear to 'float' in mid-air. It can play video up to resolutions of 4K - so-called Ultra HD, content for which is barely available to consumers.

Vertical markets

action yet in the rental and staging market, despite the availability of 4K equipment. But Paul Kent, senior consultant for entertainment at Electrosonic, says there seems to be demand in the leisure and entertainment markets. “The leisure market is running 4K projection, replacing what used to be film,” Kent says. “One example of that is the Spiderman ride at Universal.”

Some vertical markets, such as the healthcare market, are ideal for 4K, according to Dawn Meade of Net-AV. “Telemedicine, training, microsurgery via screens will take as many 4K and higher displays and cameras as we can produce. Aside from that, 4K will provide much higher image quality on extremely large outdoor or venue screens.” Todd Fender, senior analyst at NPD DisplaySearch, also sees 4K eventually playing a role in the public signage market, but not in the coming year. “We do see definite benefits for retail applications where it could make a big visual difference for folks who market high-end jewellery and fashion; this is where the growth will occur.” While Chris Chinnock, president at analyst firm Insight Media, doesn’t see much

The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man - The Ride is an epoch-making attraction created by combining more than 100 different special effects including lights, sounds, fire, smoke, and water splashes with the amazing ride vehicle movements linked with Spider-Man’s motions on the screen. The ride has been highly rated by media around the world and has won the Golden Ticket Award in the Best Dark Ride category for seven consecutive years, a historic first. The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man - The Ride 4K3D further solidifies this ride as the world’s best by combining 3D images with 4K Ultra HD technology, and ride motions enabled by cutting-edge synchronizing technology. With overwhelming reality and extreme excitement, the ride allows patrons to feel as if the entire adventure is happening to them. Paul Kent, senior consultant for entertainment at Electrosonic, says there seems to be demand for 4K in the leisure and entertainment markets. “The leisure market is running 4K projection, replacing what used to be film,” he says.

14

Lesure and entertainment In other situations, single 4K projectors are replacing multiple systems and reducing the total cost of ownership. Alternately, and many 50-inch-plus 4K screens are replacing what would have previously been projector installations. “It depends where you’re working,” says Kent. “The corporate market has just embraced HD, so we may not be getting requests in that space for

some time. On the other hand, some markets, like command and control want 8K!” “We have a number of early 4K installs for data analytics in the pharmaceutical, consumer goods, energy and government areas,” said Blair Parkin, MD of Visual Acuity. “The mapping world, including the national-mapping agency in the U.S., is also very interested in this.” But overall, Chinnock doesn’t see any particular pro-AV vertical leading the adoption of 4K. “People will start putting 4K in place in a number of different areas for a number of different reasons,” he says. “A lot of these decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.”

notes that 4K refers to several different things, including consumerformat Quad HD, cinema 4K and other 4K display forms from specific projector vendors. “Everybody is calling everything 4K, that’s a challenge because the production chain is different,” he says. Parkin also says there can be technical issues around the transport medium and related bandwidth, which start “breaking down” beyond 2560x1600. “The number of pixels per second gets very high. You need a different transport medium — dual-link DVI or DisplayPort,” he says. “It’s an emerging technology, you can get a demo but finding the peripherals is still in its early days.”

Missing Links in the 4K Chain

Universal needs

The very definition of 4K is a challenge, according to Parkin, who

There are universal needs across all verticals when it comes to

the 4K production chain in pro AV, explains Chinnock. “You must have cameras or an acquisition system to gather the content; you need a processing and editing capability to manage that content; you need a distribution system that’s part of the solution; a display system; and finally there’s lot of other pieces of hardware for encoding,” he says. “You must have all those pieces in place if you want native 4K.” The acquisition technology for 4K video has been available for some time, and the displays are now available, points out Kent. “The two end bits are done, but the middle bits are playing catch-up,” he says. “Distributing and managing 4K uncompressed video in a network situation is still hard. You can’t move 4K video around the place in the same way you do HD.”

Where does 4K sit in the television market?

DStv Online CEO John Kotsaftis says 4K is highly unlikely to be used by broadcasters in the foreseeable future. “It’s way too expensive to give up the amount of satellite capacity required to broadcast at 4K,” he says.

Standalone content aside, even with heavy compression, 4K content presents enormous challenges for broadcasters. DStv Online CEO John Kotsaftis says 4K is highly unlikely to be used by broadcasters in the foreseeable future. “It’s way too expensive to give up the amount of satellite capacity required to broadcast at 4K,” he says. While early adopters may embrace 4K in the same way they did Blu-ray, Kotsaftis says he thinks the uptake for 4K will be even slower than Blu-

ray. “There’s a quality versus convenience curve that we’re already on,” he says.” Consumers are willing to make all sorts of quality compromises in exchange for speedy and convenient access to content, but I don’t think [4K] is going to push the boundary. Everyone thought 3D would be the next big thing but it hasn’t been.” He suggests that much like 3D, 4K is something manufacturers hope will allow them to sell new TVs, but that most consumers probably won’t care for it. “An acceptable level of quality has been reached,” he says. “Now it’s about content and convenience. Where you probably could tell the difference in quality is on larger form factors.” Kotsaftis says manufacturers will probably begin shipping and promoting larger TVs. “In coming years, 50-inch or 55inch screens will have become the sort of standard that 40-inch TVs are now. To exploit 4K, you need a larger form factor. You’re just not going to notice enough of a difference on smaller screens.” The same quality/convenience argument leads him to believe that physical media for 4K content will struggle to gain traction among consumers. “4K implies going back to physical media. Even over the Internet, it’s going to require massive files and, given the choice, most people would 15

happily settle for a 720p or 1080p file anyway.” With bandwidth of around 10Mbit/s, Kotsaftis says consumers can watch “really high quality video over the Internet”. Although South Africa is still catching up with developed markets when it comes to broadband, he still can’t envisage a situation where people want optical or physical media. “Physical media has lost its value,” he says. “I used to prize it and cherish my CDs and DVDs, but now I can get most of that content online.” Audio streaming services like Spotify have taken off in the US and Europe, followed closely by services like Netflix for video content. Kotsaftis says he expects the same thing will happen in South Africa. Aside from the convenience of streaming, there’s the option of getting recommendations based on viewing or listening habits, something physical media don’t offer. “I don’t think the big change in TVs is going to be 4K. I think it’s going to be about functionality. TVs are going to get easier to use and user interfaces are going to get speedier and more elegant,” Kotsaftis says. The problem of content has, by and large, been solved, he says, but ease of use and proper integration of applications and online tools into TVs has some way to go.

What Might Hold Back 4K? Along with the challenges of moving 4K content around, the lack of native 4K video content and investment costs is a major issue, especially for companies that have made prior investments in HD or 3D technology. “While 4K creates a great image, it is not immediately practical in many aspects of pro AV,” said Meade. “There isn't much content out there for this resolution and if you find it, most screens are not large enough for 4K to make a major difference in how the picture is perceived by the human eye.” Graham Naylor-Smith, associate director at Arup, is also concerned with the cost and hassle that might come with 4K, pointing out that an upgrade can sometimes mean doubling the infrastructure.

4K Rises In the pro-AV world, adoption rates will vary based on vertical, according to Meade. “For most average corporations, it will be a slower integration due to financial considerations and total lack of need for day-to-day business. In specialty verticals the adoption rate will be

Some vertical markets, such as the healthcare market, are ideal for 4K, according to Dawn Meade of Net-AV. much quicker.” Opinions vary on the timeline for 4K in different markets. Kent thinks pro AV is looking at between three and five for 4K deployment. “It’s rising across the board and we’re doing some legacy replacements in command and control, corporate, leisure and museums.” Naylor-Smith doesn’t yet see a business or residential need driving 4K, putting its advent at perhaps five to seven years. “Why is it needed in the short term?” he says. “Broadcasters aren’t transmitting 4K.

17

You’re not getting 4K Blu-ray or streamed content. So why? ‘Because we can’ is not a good enough answer.” Parkin believes, however, that 4K will emerge much quicker than the industry realizes. “4K relates to the mobile and social media crowd, who are embracing it quickly,” he says. If 4K video content isn’t available yet, Parkins believes it will change rapidly. “The GoPro cameras now have 4K capability, so the YouTube generation is already producing and editing 4K video content. The cost of entry for production is now really low.” “Like any new technological advance, 4K video's prospects will grow as time goes on, provided a newer, higher resolution, like 8K or 12K, doesn't leap-frog it to market,” concludes Meade. Indeed, 4K is simply the next logical step for an industry constantly seeking more resolution, according to Chinnock. “Each step requires more investment,” he says. “People want return on investment. Full HD is not yet fully adopted, and there are tons of XGA and SVGA projectors still out there. I think it’s just the start of a 10or 20-year cycle.”

InfoComm MEA 2013: exhibitors show continued support Exhibitors are returning to InfoComm MEA 2013, a number with bigger booths, in a show of continued support for the region’s dedicated pro-AV communications technology event in the Middle East.

A

rthur Holm, NMK, Theatro and Venuetech have doubled their booth size from last year, while many leading AV brands have confirmed their participation. Several manufacturers, including Blackmagic Design and Matrox will also be making their debut in the Middle Eastern market at InfoComm MEA 2013. This show of support for IFMEA reflects exhibitors’ confidence in the organizers’ resolve and efforts to attract quality visitors to the Show. Despite some issues with hall location last year, InfoComm 2012 drew 12,023 visitors, generating good discussions and solid leads for exhibitors. The organizers are taking steps to increase brand presence onsite and facilitate visitor registration for this year’s InfoComm MEA. InfoCommAsia, regional subsidiary of InfoComm International, and co-organizer Dubai World Trade Centre announce that

they are putting in place three key measures to ensure greater Show visibility and a sustained visitor flow for this year’s event. Firstly, Show signage will be improved. The concourse area running along the IFMEA halls will be cleared of booths and branded with large IFMEA banners and video walls. Secondly, the

physical barriers that used to separate GITEX and IFMEA will no longer be in place, providing for a truly free flow of traffic between the two shows. And thirdly, a second entrance into the IFMEA hall will provide unobstructed linkway between GITEX and the Show, with custom carpeting welcoming GITEX visitors to the Show. InfoComm MEA 2013’s location in the Trade Centre Arena in the vast World Trade Centre complex will also be publicized in pre-show promotional materials as well as all GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK onsite signage. Co-located with GITEX Technology Week from 20-24 October 2013, InfoComm MEA 2013 will present latest Pro-AV communication and AV-IT integration solutions of leading manufacturers from all over the world. Admission to both Exhibition and Summit is free but registration is required.

C2S Nigeria supplies AIT News with virtual-set studio C2S Nigeria, the African office of WTS Group based in Lagos, has supplied AIT News with a new virtual-set studio and graphics system for their24-hour News TV Channel on the DaarSat Platform in Nigeria. The contract included a graphics package, virtual-set studio design, equipment upgrade and operator-training. The project was started and completed within months, seeing some of the most advanced news and graphics technology currently available implemented in the system.

A

IT approached C2S Nigeria, who is a well-known broadcast equipment supplier and system integrator, to upgrade their existing news studio in Abuja to HD. More than just an upgrade, a sophisticated graphics system was conceived to provide four ‘corners’ for the studio, which would be dedicated to news, finance, sports and weather coverage. The system was designed to run on templates driven by a central database, enabling operators to air current news, as it happens, in a more automated, immediate and visually sophisticated way.

Orad graphics The main equipment used in the studio install came from Orad. The BlueSet package was upgraded for its easy to use, plug-and play capacity, working with Orad’s graphics asset management product, Maestro. 3DPlay was used for channel branding and stings, supported by three HDVG+’s for rendering. With HDVG+, 3DPlay can render up to 12 inputs and perform perfect real-time DVE effects based on

templates. Graphics, ID branding, and virtual-set design for the studio were supplied by wTVision. Rotem Cohen, Business Development Manager at C2S Nigeria commented:

Seamless operation “The key to the new system was its implementation. We upgraded AIT to make the absolute best of the virtual-set technology, and by using a central database the entire process is now automated, rendering time is minimal to non-existent and graphics are continuously available for TX. For that to happen, the system had to be seamless. Using Orad’s graphics products to build the system has meant that AIT benefits from sophistication of hardware, a

seamlessly networked system, ease of use for operators and real wow-factor set and graphics provided by wTVision. Much of AIT’s previous hardware was from ORAD, so the broadcaster also received cost benefits by up-grading, through equipment trade-in for the new, more advanced technology. The result is a news channel that stands-up to highestgrade performance and which we are very proud to have been a part of.”

Proven solution Managing Director at AIT, Oluwatosin Dokpesi, added, “We have a long-standing relationship with C2S and WTS, Rotem Cohen was involved in supply for our original studio, so it was a natural decision to use them for the upgrade. We have invested in ORAD equipment in the past, and their powerful technology meets all our needs for automation and graphics, so we are very happy. We were very ambitious for the upgrade, and the work has definitely paid off.” The studio is already operational with operator training by C2S Nigeria currently underway.

Choosing a flexible, cost-effective LFD solutions partner The large format displays (LFDs) market in South Africa is really growing in strength, but with so many options out there, how does a company go about selecting solutions that fit their budgets and that are easy to use? This is especially important considering that LFDs are used to not only drive corporate communication, but draw attention to the brand and position it in the hearts and minds of customers.

M

oreover, companies need flexible solutions that let them focus on managing their content easily while worrying less about wires, media boxes, and unwieldy software. Says Manoj Bhoola,

Head of Business to Business at Samsung Electronics South Africa; “Using a manufacturer who has a trusted brand name in the market is one way to approach it. Yet, the solutions being offered need to be able to support that trust and provide an effective way of reducing the total cost of ownership of LFDs. ”Traditionally a digital signage network required a separate media player running its own operating system, attached behind the screen. Both devices required power and cabling to link them. This not only uses more electricity, but the additional cabling is often unsightly. Having said that, this has been the only way to

effectively manage digital displays – until now! Today, there is the option to incorporate a media player as a system-onchip on the same board as the display chipset, eliminating the need to have external media players for customised content. This means that fewer cables are required, installation is virtually plug-andplay, and the point of network failure is significantly reduced. In addition, through this type of set up, more impactful messages can be delivered to customers in real-time irrespective of the display being viewed while businesses not only minimise equipment and installation costs but also, can better manage their operational costs.

The Samsung Smart Signage Platform is a pure example of this type of LFD display which also includes an added enhancement - the Samsung MagicInfo S -authoring solution for content management. It ships as an open source development kit to enable partners to provide expanded software services to business users. “Ultimately, a business looking for an LFD solution should look to partner with a brand that is focused on providing solutions that meet the unique needs of the South African market, one that ensures costeffective and flexible offerings and that is designed to bring a client's vision to life on the big screen,” concludes Bhoola.

he opening was held on 30 May and the congress took place on 31 May, and with Gearhouse’s reputation as a good and reliable service provider, the Group was naturally the first choice for Executive Producer and Creative Director David Bloch to partner with, in executing the Opening Ceremony. Originally, Pieter Joubert (Technical Director – Opening Ceremony) was briefed to advise on the technical and set aspects of the Opening Ceremony only, but it soon became apparent that the actual Congress would require extensive support as well, due to the limited resources available on the island. As both the opening and the congress were to take place on the same stage, in the same venue, with only 12 hours and a rehearsal in between, this became quite a challenge.

Lengthy planning process It was a lengthy planning process between David Bloch, Zurich based Events Company Rufener Events represented by Project Director Lisa Tschanz and the Gearhouse team. Together they pulled the event together successfully with planning commencing as early as September and Joubert joining the second series of site inspections in October. Gearhouse and Sets, Drapes, Screens (SDS) were appointed as service providers, while all set designs were produced by Bob Klenk of OceanSalt Set Design. The result was an island – themed look and feel, complete with palm trees and a volcano, utilising a panoramic screen for background visuals. The Opening Ceremony was inspired by the creation of the island itself and specifically the 5 elements; Water, Earth, Wind, Fire and Air. The set alone required 6 x 40 ft containers for transportation to the island. All technical specifications were managed by Bullitt Productions, headed by Marco Gutensperger. Gearhouse SA supplied all lighting, rigging, audio, generators and power infrastructure, as well as content editing of the Opening Ceremony visuals. Projectors were supplied by PRG,

Switzerland. For the Congress setup; the room was completely turned around to accommodate 2500 delegates seated schoolroom style plus 32 committee members seated at custom built desks. A variety of Gearhouse companies were involved in the entire planning and execution of the congress.

Show-styled opening With many obstacles to overcome along the road in making this event a success, the main challenge was to fulfil the requirement of organising a showstyled opening ceremony which could then turn around for a congress within 12 hours. Both Lighting and Audio rigs had to be designed to service all technical aspects of both these very different events without any changes between events. This was the first time that FIFA had tried to accomplish something like this, and to do so on a small island like Mauritius was no small feat. Shipping most of the equipment from South Africa, part by air and part by sea in containers, without leaving anything behind and knowing that there were very limited resources on the island to accommodate changes, took a serious amount of planning. Working with 22

local crew and companies to accomplish this event within strict deadlines was just one of the many challenges along the way.

Crucial planning The set was all pre manufactured in South Africa by Sets, Drapes, Screens from designs by Ocean Salt, and needed to be fully assembled in three days. Transforming the set after the Opening to suit the congress required crucial planning at the manufacturing stage, but thanks to intelligent thinking from SDS, the transformation was made easier by a 24m x 4m wide screen that was removed after the opening to reveal another screen of the same size, built into the proscenium at a different position, which set the stage for the congress. “Having the group of Gearhouse companies involved always make your life easier. They have the knowledge of doing big events abroad and the infrastructure to manage these types of events successfully,” comments ject Manager Pieter Joubert. “Of course, for the client, having single-source access to all disciplines is the key to a stress free experience. That is truly the advantage of contracting this group.”

Woolworths ups the ante with PVision and One Digital Media. Retail giant Woolworths has concluded an agreement with One Digital Media and PVision to equip qualifying outlets with LED display technology.

L

ocal display technology provider, PVision, has formally concluded a partnership agreement with One Digital Media – South Africa’s largest provider of digital signage solutions, to equip Woolworths stores with advanced commercial display technology. The contract has so far seen One Digital Media and Pvision implement over one hundred 40 inch LED displays and eight 46 inch LED panels for use in collective video walls situated within strategic retail locations. Woolworths is always looking at new ways to add value to the customer experience; display technology is an exciting new opportunity. The on-going nature of this agreement will continue to see each player actively contributing towards Woolworths’ vision for a technologically advanced, visually appealing in-store experience. Most of the panels we have installed are located at

pay points, allowing customers to view marketing content while awaiting payment – equipping Woolworths with a useful and eye catching marketing and sales tool. LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology solutions also require less electricity to operate during extended periods and, in a retail environment, this can result in a significant cost saving when

compared to similar solutions. Pvision Director, David Ross, believes that this partnership is significant in that it heralds a new age for in-store marketing. “Woolworths is well known for its willingness to embrace innovation. The fact that the company opted for dynamic LED solutions for in-store use is a great example of how display technology can be effectively implemented in a new setting. We are extremely proud and indeed motivated to be working with this retailer in partnership with One Digital Media”. Pvision is a South African manufacturer of display technologies. Focussed on the commercial market, the group equips business with locally manufactured products which include commercial displays, lite commercial displays, nano displays, touchscreen technology, mounting solutions and back-end architecture.

MGG chooses Christie once again to meet growing demand Christie has announced a deal with MGG, one of the largest rental staging companies in South Africa, for four Christie Roadster HD20K-J 3-chip DLP purpose-built, event-staging projectors. These will be the first of the new J-Series projectors to be deployed in Africa.

T

he Roadster HD20K-J DLP projector enables customers to create visually compelling Pro-AV shows, with Xenon colour-rich, high definition images. Perfect for large venues, including tradeshows, conference rooms, concerts, live events and building displays. MGG has been steadily increasing their investment in Christie Pro-AV systems, starting with LCD and 1-chip DLP, moving to 3-chip DLP, UHP illuminated M-Series and now onto the J-Series digital projectors. Mark Gaylard, owner of MGG, said, “Over the last couple of years we have purchased a number of Christie products and have been particularly impressed with their quality and reliability, so when we were looking for projectors that could enhance our capabilities and offerings, they had to be Christie.” Gustav

Barnard, Technical and Education Manager at Stage Audio Works, added, “We are delighted to have MGG, a true pioneer in the event technology rental sector, on board as the first owners of the Christie Roadster HD20K-J digital projector on the continent to meet the growing demands of the African market. Congratulations to Mark on his investment.” Gustav’s enthusiasm is reflected in comment from Phil Lord, 23

Christie’s Territory Manager for Africa. “We have been building a strong relationship with MGG via our partner Stage Audio Works over the last two years, so we are particularly pleased that they have chosen our Roadster HD20K-J projectors to enhance their rental staging offerings,” says Phil. “In addition, this deal will be backed by our outstanding service and support, and we are keen to explore ways of helping them to grow their business still further in the future.”

Lance Armstrong: seven-time winner of the Tour de France.

Alex Rodriguez: three-time American League baseball MVP.

Ryan Braun: 2012 National League baseball Most Valuable Player (MVP) award winner.

Tyson Gay: three-time Olympic Gold Medal sprinter.

Making the right choices in a cheating culture Each of the men pictured above is a phenomenal athlete but each has been disciplined in recent months for the use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs).

T

hese are just the best-known of dozens of cases of disgraced competitors from track and field, baseball, cycling, and other sports. Why would elite athletes resort to using banned substances, especially in an era of aggressive drug detection strategies? Like generations of wayward teenagers before them, the accused retort that “everybody’s doing it.” In the words of bicyclist Lance Armstrong, the race was “impossible to win without doping” and he “simply participated in a system.”

Cheating - the new normal?

Does that mean that cheating is the new normal — not only in sports, but in classrooms, boardrooms, and newsrooms? Greed, envy, materialism, inequality, and insecurity spur unethical behavior, Callahan maintains. Adherence to the rules erodes in the absence of accountability, regulation, pro-social peer pressure, and individual morality. An important aspect of Callahan’s premise is the degree to which media shape our perceptions of the disparities that require deceit and the frequency and rewards of cheating. Fame and fat paychecks go to the winners. Every step in life thus becomes a critical turning point that determines the difference between success and failure — making the traveling team, getting admitted to the best school, scoring well on high-stakes tests, closing the crucial sale. Public attention and admiration get drawn to the winners — those who do whatever it takes whatever the cost. Implicit in this is an “ends justify the means” mentality.

What choice do you have?

In his book The Cheating Culture: Why More Americans are Doing Wrong to Get Ahead, David Callahan suggests that, in any segment of society, deceit results when people perceive that the deck is stacked against them and that only an extra turn can make up the difference.

And even when winners eventually are defrocked as cheaters, amid the disappointment and condemnation are justifications for the misbehavior. Consider the reaction of famed bioethicist Arthur Caplan in defense of Lance Armstrong. “Shouldn’t Armstrong, especially because of the inspiration he is to cancer survivors or anyone on the short end of the advantage stick, get a pass for being no 24

more dirty, but a whole lot better than everyone else in his sport? Armstrong isn’t being investigated as the only cheater. He is in all likelihood just the best, most talented one.” Small wonder, then, that cheating is taken for granted. What choices do people have if they intend to play by the rules? Let me suggest four options. Find a better benchmark for success Does it feel good to win if you have to cheat to do it? I haven’t read much about unethical athletes, but I have to wonder about the narratives they create not only to justify winning at any cost, but to derive satisfaction from it. Cheating teams are stripped of championships. Individuals end their hall of fame hopes and go down on the record books with asterisks beside their lifetime statistics. Isn’t dishonest success a pyrrhic victory?

1 2

If you think everyone is cheating, find new friends Not everyone cheats. And many clean athletes experience ample success. Rodriguez’s teammate, Mariano Rivera, will retire at the end of the season, having been feted at home and on the road after 19 years in the major leagues. People who conduct themselves with integrity resent those who cheat and their ill-gotten rewards. But no matter how contemptible they find their colleagues’ behavior, people of integrity don’t let it become a reason to join in the fraud.

and the league leadership will agree that a first offense will lead to a lifetime ban in the sport.“Not 50 games, 100 games on a second offense and a lifetime ban for a third. “Do it, you’re gone. “Want to clean up the game? It’s that simple. Because right now, it makes sense to cheat.”

Change the risk-benefit calculus. Make cheating hurt As long as suspensions and reprimands come after the dishonesty has been rewarded, it will never have a sufficient deterrent effect. As Bob Kravitz wrote in USA Today: “I’m looking at the PED suspensions for 12 Major League Baseball players, plus the 211 games tossed at Alex Rodriguez, and I’m asking this question: Wouldn’t you cheat, too? “Before I answer that question in the affirmative, let me toss this out there: If baseball, and all sports, want to put an end to the scourge of performance-enhancing drugs, the unions

Find a model of integrity; be a model of integrity In tests of right and wrong, the “mom test” asks what your mom would do in a given situation or what she would think if she knew what you were doing. No doubt there are some moms (even in youth sports) who will endorse or promote cheating to win. But there will also be parents, coaches, and other role models who know where to draw the line. “No, I will not lie about your age to keep you in Little

League.” “Don’t cheat.” “Respect the ref.” Every day brings opportunities to teach integrity and role-model it for others. Culture is hard — and slow — to change. But before determining that it is futile to resist a cheating culture, consider the advice given by moms over the ages, when told that “everyone is doing it”: If everyone were jumping off a cliff, would you follow them?

SACIA’s commitment to business ethics In the early part of 2013 SACIA introduced a Business Code that is binding on all members. The Code indicates a commitment to higher standards of ethics and service, and a willingness by members to be held accountable to those standards. “We aim for the SACIA logo to be synonymous with trust and quality,” explains SACIA Executive Director Kevan Jones. “Our members are committed to excellence and take pride in their work. We believe that abiding by the standards embedded within our Code, members are able to build more professional and more trusting business relationships.” The next step for SACIA is to appoint an industry Ombudsman who will be engaged in resolving disputes involving members who are alleged to be in breach of the Code. “The ombudsman will provide confidential, neutral assistance to constituents to protect against unfair treatment and help resolve conflicts, explains Jones. “Specific functions include listening to grievances, investigating and resolving complaints, educating constituents on their rights, providing confidential consultations and offering options for conflict resolution. The ombudsman will also engage with other industry bodies active in our industry sector. “As an active member of SASFED we’re encouraging our colleagues in allied professions to embrace the same commitment to professional standards and ethical business conduct,” concludes Jones.

It will be complemented by a scheme for recognising continuing occupational and professional development, putting the onus on the individual to maintain the certification throughout their careers.”

On 11 October SACIA is hosting a half-day workshop at the Cape Town Lodge Hotel in Buitengracht St. It starts with a networking breakfast at 8am and then expands into a series of presentations that focus on the use of AV technology in the Western Cape. We're still working on the final programme but we've got some great presentations on the planning board, including presentations from David Caplan, head of the AV unit at Old Mutual; Marianne Dirker from the SA Navy in Simonstown; Peter Robson, managing director of Isenzo Broadcast and Prof. Johannes Cronje from Cape Peninsula University. Prof. Cronje will lead

Glowing testimonial from University of Johannesburg

During May 2013 Fusi Mokoena, service delivery manager in the ICS department at the University of Johannesburg attended our GEN111 Essentials of AV Technology training course. He’s now encouraging other University staff to attend and share the experience. “In January 2013 the Audio Visual unit at the University of

Johannesburg (UJ) was incorporated into the Information and Communications Systems Department reporting directly to me. At the time my knowledge of AV was sparse and it was a daunting and challenging task to be responsible for the AV unit coming from a purely IT background,” he explains. Thanks to Kevan for encouraging me to enrol in the GEN111 Essentials of AV Technology course in May 2013. Without attending the GEN111 course I do not know how I would have been able to steer this ship up to this stage with confidence and efficiency.

a panel discussion on standards, training and skills development in the visual communications industry. We'll also have a number of vendor-specific presentations to round off the session, with JVC’s Chris Darnley showing of the company’s new GYHM650 camcorder. With its innovative live streaming feature, this camcorder enables footage to be streamed live at the same time as recording full HD to the SDHC/SDXC memory card. There's no charge for the workshop but there are a limited number of seats available so if you are interested in attending I'd appreciate.

The IABM Training Academy has announced that they will significantly extend the breadth of its course offering in the coming year. "The IABM holds a unique role within the broadcast sector, and one that positions us to identify some of the key skills shortages within broadcast technology companies," said Steve Warner, training manager at the IABM (International Association of 31

Broadcasting Manufacturers). "We have built an array of courses designed to address these shortages, and our extensive evaluation system confirms that IABM Training Academy courses do indeed make a difference to performance in the workplace. The response we're seeing indicates that companies across the industry are starting to wake up to the skills shortages facing them." Two new courses that will be presented to the South African market through an alliance with SACIA are the new "Network Essentials for Broadcast Engineers," and "Compression Fundamentals and Applications" courses.

Jonathan Lyth, Systems manager at C2S Systems commented, “We were keen to show off our mechanical engineering and coachwork ability on this project, as it was the first bodywork project we’ve done for SuperSport and we obviously wanted to impress. The seamless mechanics and smooth operation of the mechanical rigging, with the power of the hydraulics, gives the truck extra wow-factor – these elements allowed us to prove the team’s ingenuity and attention to detail. Lyth continued: “Using equipment from other systems posed it’s own challenges in the system design. We knew the truck needed to be ready for an upgrade in only a few months time, so we built a system that would allow that to happen with minimal disruption, and also fitted the truck with an HDready system so that all additional equipment could simply slot into place. Making things seem easy can be surprisingly complex.” Andre Venter, Head, SuperSport Africa commented: “We knew this project could be challenging, especially with such a tight time-scale, but C2S Systems have always been able to meet our needs, so we had every confidence and the result is a very impressive truck. The OB was covering the live Cricket in Zimbabwe only hours after the C2S team had finished final commissioning on-site. When C2S Systems finalises the vehicle it will be the most powerful OB truck of its kind in Eastern Africa, which makes us very proud.”

2S Systems, the Systems Integration arm of WTS Group, has completed design and integration including coachwork on a new OB truck for SuperSport. This is the sixth OB supplied by C2S Systems to the broadcaster. The project was commissioned to replace a previous eight-camera OB truck in use across Eastern Africa, with the installation of equipment from two existing broadcast vehicles, combined to make a single and better functioning 14-camera unit. With complex, custom-designed coachwork included in the contract, C2S Systems has completed the entire project in-house, from vehicle supply through to commission and acceptance. A second stage of work on the truck will commence later in the year, when it will have its full complement of equipment installed, bringing it to its full capability and making it one of the most powerful OB’s of its kind in Eastern Africa. The C2S Systems team completed the coachwork in late 2012, and the design, new equipment sourcing, integration and testing began in January 2013 taking just 12 weeks from order to commissioning. The Mercedes Axor 26T rigid chassis truck was built as a double-

expander to provide space, and the bodywork was designed to accommodate a large amount of equipment. State-of-the-art mechanics and hydraulics were used in the vehicle, allowing expansion of the OB truck and simple and efficient rigging by the production team with the push of a button.
